In December, La Jolla Parks and Beaches, Inc. heard from a landscape architect about plans to replace a historic belvedere at Windansea Beach.

A prioritized capital improvements and maintenance list for 2019 was also provided to the city by the advisory group.

Local landscape architect Jim Neri has worked on a number of coastal park improvement projects in La Jolla, including the recently completed Children’s Pool Plaza.

Neri gave a brief presentation showing a diagram for proposed recreation of a historic belvedere at WindanSea off Neptune Place near Rosemont Street. That structure was destroyed in the early ’80s. At

that time, police said it appeared chains had been used by a vehicle to haul down the popular public shack structure.

“That belvedere was constructed around 1912,” said Neri pointing out the importance of such early public structures in La Jolla. “They are very small, very quaint, and SEE BEACHES PG. 4

Doing it Better

By Natasha Josefowitz, Ph.D. We all have patterns of interacting with others; we have preferred ways of communicating, habitual ways of responding or not responding, predictable ways of dealing with conflict. Yet we are only dimly aware of how congruent we are in all our behaviors. Take a look at the following response styles. See if you can identify similar patterns you fall into and, therefore, exact some control if this is not the way you perceive yourself and wish to act. This includes you at work, at home, with friends, or out in the world. You are recognizable.

First of all, we cannot not communicate. We are always sending messages; even if we are just standing still, non-verbal cues are broadcast by our postures. Are we standing erect, head held high, legs slightly apart or are we leaning against a wall, slumped over?

We are always doing four things at once: we are acting (either verbally or non-verbally), we are observing the actions of others, we are reflecting on what we see, and

we are responding (even a nonresponse is a response).

Looking at the person talking and nodding one’s heads shows interest in what that person is saying. Looking away, fiddling with one’s hair or tie shows disinterest. A vacant stare, fidgeting, and looking toward a door shows boredom and a wish to leave.

The messages are clear, whether we are sending or receiving them.

There are listening styles. In the last example above, it is listening to endure. We also listen to compete by interrupting the other and telling something about ourselves, which is obviously more important than whatever the other is saying. We listen to complete by adding to their story, making it more interesting or funny. We listen to correct; we know more, we know better.

Suppose someone is complaining to you about a difficult boss. How are you most likely to respond: Comparing and one-upping – my boss is worse.

Educating and advising – have you tried to…?

Discounting – that’s nothing, at least you have a job.

Sympathizing – oh you poor thing, this is so awful.

Data gathering and interrogating – how often does he do this? Is there a pattern?

Explaining away and defending – your boss must be under a lot of

pressure; you should help him.

Analyzing – have you had problems like this before with others?

Of course, it depends on the situation and what the person complaining seems to need, yet we tend to have a “modus operandi,” a usual way of responding.

Most of us take on specific roles in group situations. Some of us tend to be more task-oriented, some are more socially-oriented, and some are self-oriented. The task-oriented people suggest new ideas, provide and seek information and opinions, clarify problems, summarize and test for consensus. The more socially-oriented people help by exploring differences and reconciling disagreements, supporting and encouraging, compromising to maintain group harmony, and encouraging contributions. Those that are mostly self-oriented are really working on their own needs such as being noticed by interrupting, over-participating, attacking, deflating, or using sarcasm.

Our preferred modes of communication permeate all parts of our life – even the way we parent our children and talk to our spouses.

We also have a comfort range that we fall back on when dealing with conflict. Some of us are competitive – pursuing our own concerns first.

The opposite would be accommodating –neglecting our needs to sat-

isfy those of others. When we compromise, we attempt to partially satisfy both ourselves and others.

Avoiding is not addressing the issue.

And, finally, we may attempt to collaborate – satisfying both parties.

The most effective mode of interaction is what I call a situational response; what I mean by this is the ability to change one’s response according to the person, issue, prevailing mood, time, locale, and other variables. This requires being in touch with one’s feelings about the message as well as one’s feelings about the person and his/her needs.

We tend to be stuck in comfort zones we rely on and respond in familiar ways. But it is best to have a multitude of tools available to use appropriately. Unfortunately, it is often only when our habitual mode of interaction becomes unsuitable that we are willing to try novel behaviors which at first might feel uncomfortable, but will add to our repertoire.

As you identify your most common ways of interacting, see if you can try different tactics and check if the result is an improvement in your communication outcomes.

News Community cheers revamped Children’s Pool Plaza opening

On a sunny Sunday, La Jolla community volunteers Dec. 9 celebrated the opening of the Children’s Pool Plaza project after eight years of effort with speeches, proclamations and ice cream.

Introduced by MC Ron Jones, the voice of La Jolla, master of ceremonies Ann Dynes, chair of La Jolla Parks and Beaches, Inc., introduced VIPs and guests.

Topping the list was Phyllis Minick, who held a bouquet of flowers in hand alongside her husband Stan during the ceremony. Phyllis spearheaded the public effort to beautify Children’s Pool walkway improvements.

“This is not a children versus seals event,” said Dynes. “This is a celebration of an improvement to a piece of property. This has been a precious space in La Jolla since 1931. It’s also become a precious space to a lot of our visitors. Now it has been revamped to accommodate all of the visitors.”

“On Feb. 17, 2012, Minick and (landscape architect) Jim Neri presented a design to La Jolla Parks and Beaches for reconfiguring the sidewalk area above the Pool to improve its appearance and utility,” continued Dynes. “Over the years, Phyllis raised a lot of money, and went through a lot of process.”

Dynes also recognized pool plaza donors in the audience during her presentation. Major donor’s names

now grace a bronze plaque embedded in a boulder alongside a seating wall toward the north end of the plaza. Additionally, a large sign now names all contributors of both funding and services toward the project.

First District Councilmember Barbara Bry also spoke at the celebration honoring volunteers and their commitment to community beautification.

Neri said the intent is to rebuild the WindanSea belvedere in the same spot it was before. “Donors have stepped forward and we have the funding,” he said.

“Who is doing the building?,” asked LJPB president Ann Dynes.

“A licensed contractor on the City’s approved list,” answered Neri.

“We don’t have a contractor in place yet. We’re not that far along.”

An audience member remarked

that the old belvedere may have been taken down by neighbors who claimed it was problematic and was being used by gangs.

“How do we prevent the same neighbors from tearing it down again?,” asked LJPB board member Sally Miller.

“Some of those neighbors have moved on,” said Neri. “Hopefully, it won’t happen again.”

“It’s going to be a nice bit of shade on a street that has no shade,” said board member Melinda Merryweather, who’s spearheaded the belvedere’s re-creation.

Regarding the group’s capital improvements and maintenance list for 2019, Dynes said, “We’ve walked the coastline and looked at things, and we got suggestions this year for park improvements from both Bird Rock and Coast Walk.”

Noting Coast Walk improvements are “pretty noncontroversial,” Dynes added, “That path needs repairs. We’d also love to see Goldfish Point fixed up.”

The improvements list also includes: funds for La Jolla Cove Pavilion with construction starting in 2019, Scripps Park sidewalk repairs, Whale View Point shoreline enhancement, WindanSea storm drain repair, widening narrow sidewalks on Coast Boulevard, restoring an access ramp at Children’s Pool, replacing all trash can lids in Bird Rock oceanfront parks and outlooks, increasing trash collection at La Jolla Cove, and installing La Jollabranded bicycle racks around town.

Stance ISA World Adaptive Surfing Championship at La Jolla Shores this weekend

Surf's up for para-surfers, who are uniting in La Jolla Shores Dec. 12-16 for the fourth annual Stance ISA World Adaptive Surfing Championship. More than 25 of the world’s best National Para-Surfing Teams will all be competing for gold. Last year, Team Brazil was crowned world champion.

The Stance ISA World Adaptive Surfing Championship was launched in 2015 to build a platform for physically challenged surfers to display their talents in competition. Under the ISA’s leadership, the sport has seen an explosion of growth and spurred its expansion worldwide.

The event’s participation numbers have boomed since the inaugural event with athlete participation increasing nearly 60 percent, and country participation increasing more than 40 percent.

Two challenged athletes competing in this year’s ISA World Adaptive Surfing Championship, Alana Nichols, the first woman world champion in the AS-3 Division, and native San Diegan Quinn Waitley, talked about what it means to them.

“The stoke level, hands down,” answered Nichols about why she competes, adding, “You’d be hard pressed to find a more hyped-up-tobe-surfing group of individuals on

the planet. Everyone that convenes in La Jolla has had to overcome great odds just to get from the land to the water. And then to figure out how to surf with a disability – you better believe there’s passion involved.”

Waitley concurred ISA is something special.

“I love competing against the best surfers in the world and helping this sport grow and include more athletes, fans and sponsors,” he said.

“The competition at the ISA is the best, bringing athletes from around the world. I have so many friends in

adaptive surfing, and the ISA brings us together in a special venue.”

Concerning training, Waitley said, “Since I must have help getting in the water and on every wave, I can’t train as often as I would like. But I train with my dad and other friends whenever we can. I surf and go to the gym, and other activities to prepare myself for competition. I want to surf my best and hope to win a gold medal.”

In 2017, the Stance ISA World Adaptive Surfing Championship made history, as a record-breaking

109 athletes convened in La Jolla to represent their 26 respective nations and compete for gold in the Paralympic-style, team-based event. The event was the first to take place after the ISA received official recognition from the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and was a key milestone in the ISA’s ambitions to see Para-Surfing included in future editions of the Paralympic Games.

“The ISA is proud to host this World Championship for the fourth consecutive year and continue to make surfing more accessible to

those with physical challenges around the world,” said La Jolla and ISA president Fernando Aguerre.

“Our commitment to para-surfing is representative of our inclusive nature as a federation, and our push to spread the joy of the sport worldwide. Surfing has a therapeutic power to heal that we believe can be used to change people’s lives.”

Aguerre thanked Stance for extending their support in growing the adaptive surfing movement.

“Stance has been, and will continue to be, an integral part and key partner of our aim to grow and develop Adaptive Surfing within all of our 103 member nations,” he said.

Opening ceremonies this year were held Dec. 12 in Kellogg Park in La Jolla Shores. The competition continues through Sunday, Dec. 16, with closing ceremonies held following the last heat.

Since 2017, women-only divisions have been added into the event mix reflecting increased popularity and participation of the sport among females. As a result, in 2017 the ISA crowned five women’s world champions – the first ever in the sport – in a strong display of the talent that has grown in women’s para-surfing.

Iconic ‘Piano Building’ in Bird Rock sold for $2.9 million The Lock Wang Family Trust has sold the mixed-use retail and office building known as the “Piano Building” in Bird Rock, for $2.9 million according to brokerage company The Franco Realty Group.

The building size is about 5,320-square-feet. The total lot size of the parcel is 6,555-squarefeet.

The Franco Realty Group, led by Alex Austin and Tony Franco, reported that the building was fully occupied at the time of sale.

UC boys basketball starts season strong

Breaking down into each player’s individual game is University City’s kryptonite.

“We do well if we play together,” says Centurion head coach Terry Stonebraker.

UC started the new season with a rush, winning four of five games on the way to a number-seven ranking in CIF by MaxPreps.

The Centurions, led by 6-feet 6inches tall Benito Hurtado, also had a high strength-of-schedule rating: 2.3. That means their early wins weren’t against cupcakes.

But the team’s performances haven’t been even. Stonebraker, who has seen a few decades of winters up Genesee Ave., is quick to acknowledge that.

“We’re up-and-down,” the wizened coach offered when asked if his team was worthy of the number-seven ranking.

But he’s also quick to point out the core of talent on his 2018-19 squad, led by a trio of seniors, including the imposing Hurtado.

“They have been starting together since they were sophomores,” said Stonebraker of 6-foot Ben Bruce and 6-feet 4-inches tall leaper Casey Granfors, in addition to Benito at the center spot. “(Hurtado) is pulling down 14

rebounds a game, with 4 to 5 blocks. He’s averaging a doubledouble (in points and rebounds).

“He loves the boards. Most of his rebounds are on the defensive end.”

The coach remembers the leaner times of two years ago, when his mainstays were young and just feeling their oats.

“Benito has developed slowly (over the years), working hard, each year just getting better.”

Bruce, who wears jersey number 0, is a multi-sport athlete who brings all that physicality across to basketball. “He has played well since coming over from football,” updated the coach. “When (Ben) stays within himself, he plays well.”

Granfors, of course, has received a lot of attention for his exploits as an all-CIF wide receiver for the successful Centurion football team the last few years. His leaping ability enables him to get to balls others can’t reach, but he has to avoid relying just on his natural skills over discipline and fundamentals in his basketball game.

“He’s a great leader,” said Stonebraker. “He’s not a rah-rah leader.

He’s more an example to the others. They have more confidence when he’s out on the floor.”

Says UC assistant coach Gatluak Gully, like Granfors 6-feet 4-inches, who played under Stonebraker:

“We’re working with Casey to play more under control.” Gully brings his own playing experience to the Centurions, as well as his life experience coming from South Sudan, having been born in neighboring Ethiopia.

Junior Kasen Dickerson, a 6-feet 2-inches tall guard, “is the field general,” said the head coach. “He handles the ball well, and sees the floor.

He contains the dribble (as a defender) pretty well.”

In a rivalry game at La Jolla early in the season, Dickerson showed himself to be aggressive and capable of taking charge, imposing his presence at the point on offense.

Fellow junior Luke Minnick, a 6footer, can fill up the basket quickly.

“He’s a good shooter,” said coach Bob Allen, former athletic director at La Jolla High, who knows Minnick’s abilities.

“He’s been shooting the hell out of the ball,” says Stonebraker. “He had five three’s in one game already, four in another.” Even when the going was rough in the spirited rivalry game against the Vikings, the shooting guard succeeded on three treys and three two-pointers for 16 points.

In addition to being effective outside, he had some tear-drop layups driving in the middle.

La Jolla High boys soccer team jelling this season

Victor Zendejas was reached in Kansas City, where his son Adrian and his soccer team, Sporting Kansas City, were competing in the MLS playoffs.

Adrian, a 6-feet 5-inches tall goalie, played in high school at Hilltop High, then for the Nomads in the U.S. Soccer developmental system. The tall, physical keeper started out his pro career for Xolos in Tijuana.

The senior Zendejas, a veteran coach who helped cultivate his son’s nascent skills, the fruits of which he can now enjoy by spectating at Adrian’s pro games (though he is backup goalie for KC at this point), is also involved in watering and fertilizing budding soccer players at La Jolla High.

“Jelling” and “having fun” are words that come out of his mouth in talking about this winter’s edition of the boys Vikings team. Head coach Marcos Gonzales and he have brought continuity and new levels of success to the La Jolla program the past five years, evidenced by the Vikings’ CIF Division 4 title in March 2016.

“This year the players are more engaged with each other,” said Zendejas on the long-distance connection from Missouri. “It’s hard to explain. We have (several) players coming up from the JVs. “The team is really jelling.

They’re having fun.”

One of the juniors leading the way is Caleb Saul, a center back who was recently chosen as a team captain along with senior Nick Goehler, another center back. Zendejas says they will both be in the

game at the same time, even though each normally is positioned at the center back position on defense.

“Caleb has come a long way, and he’s showing leadership this year,” says Zendejas.

“Both captains give a lot of leadership. They help the other players, encouraging them in practice and in other ways.”

Noah Brown, a junior right midfielder, “is looking very, very confident,” says Zendejas. “He’s been playing with a club.” That has provided him with more high-level competition to hone his skills.

The goalkeeper’s position hadn’t been set by the start of the new season. “There’s competition there,” said Zendejas. Senior Kevin Mojica, who also plays as a field player on defense, returns to vie against Thomas Davies, an underclassman.

Another returning player who will be available after his U.S. Academy commitment (CIF rules forbid playing for school and club teams at the same time) is senior Grant Wagner. “He’s going to be going to a scouting combine in Florida in coming weeks,” advised Zendejas.

Other key players include Jaxen Torbensen. “He’s a fun player to watch.” The coach repeated the assertion for emphasis.

Of the Vikings’ 4-0 season-opening win at home against Clairemont at the end of November, Brown commented, “We played very strong and are working on our chemistry as a team, as well as getting to know each other better. We hope to come out strong in our next games.”

Dominic’s Table Chef Dominic Tedesco is a true, creative Renaissance man and Master Chef. 1. How the Grinch Stole Christmas – A wonderful, whimsical musical based upon the classic Dr. Seuss book, now showing through Dec. 29 at The Old Globe theatre in Balboa Park. 2. Outdoor ice skating – While most San Diegans think it’s “freezing” when the temperatures hit the 60s, it’s fun to bundle up and go outdoor ice skating. La Jolla Santa Pub Crawl set for Dec. 15 Spearheaded by the co-founder of the hugely successful Park City Santa Pub Crawl in Utah, which now draws 2,000 revelers each year, the inaugural La Jolla Santa Pub Crawl will take place Saturday, Dec. 15, beginning at 6 p.m. at George’s at the Cove Level 2.

The event is designed to be a fun opportunity to eat, drink and be merry, San Diego-style.

The pub crawl is open to the public, ages 21 and over. It is free to attend, but participants are asked to bring an unwrapped toy to Hennessey’s anytime during the evening. The donations will be delivered to Rady Children’s Hospital.

Participating bars on the pub crawl are George’s at the Cove Level 2, The Spot, Jose’s Courtroom, and Hennessey’s. Crawlers are invited to be creative and wear festive, holiday-themed costumes.

“The Park City Santa Pub Crawl began eight years ago with about 20 participants, and it has since grown to about 2,000 people, taking over the town and traveling from all over the country,” says Hilary Reiter, of Redhead Marketing & PR, organizer of both La Jolla and Park City Santa Pub Crawls.

While they were once considered an exotic flowering plant, today orchids can even be found in grocery stores. The mass production of growing orchids has made these beautiful plants much more affordable and they are available yearround. In Encinitas, Cal Pacific Orchid Farm is the place to go to find an assortment of high-quality orchid plants and their holiday arrangements have inspired me for many years.

White phalaenopsis orchids (butterfly orchids) are easy to find and a great choice for holiday arrangements, since their neutral color blends in with any color scheme. Arrange orchids in containers and hide their pots in green moss, seashells, stones or even a collection of small round Christmas balls. Add small potted plants, such as ferns, ivy, or bromeliads, for larger arrangements and tuck in sprigs of holly, evergreens, berries and a festive ribbon to suit your holiday décor.

Holiday wreaths can be adorned with an assortment of small potted orchids. Wrap their plastic pots with green moss and tuck them into the evergreens or into plants growing in a living wreath. Phalaenopsis

orchids can usually be found in small plastic pots growing in moss, which is the best type of planting material for this type of arrangement. Keep the orchid plants fresh by spraying the plants potting material with water occasionally, trying not to get the leaves or flowers wet.

Small floral tubes filled with water can be used to add living orchid flowers to your Christmas tree, wreath, or garland. Try using a single cymbidium flowers or sprays of orchids, such as dendrobiums or oncidiums. Whole Sale Flowers in the area usually has a selection of cut orchids.
