Family receives new home for the holidays La Jolla Rotary and Interact clubs help build house in Tijuana On a cool November morning, just as the sun peeked over the mountains, 15 club members of La Jolla Rotary and La Jolla High School Interact gathered at Mission Bay Visitor’s Center for a day-trip to Tijuana. The group’s mission on Nov. 14 was to to build a home for a Mexican family.
In just seven hours, the simple home, constructed of wood frame and plywood on a cement slab foundation, was completed. This basic residence represented a dramatic and much-appreciated improvement in housing for the family, even though it did not include
heating, electricity or plumbing. The family had been living in a makeshift dwelling with a dirt floor, scrap wood walls and tarp roof. That night, the family moved from the tumble-down shack into the new home before a rain storm hit the area. SEE HOME>> PG. 2

To Tell Or Not to Tell Doing it Better By Natasha Josefowitz, Ph.D. Most people want to fit in, to belong, to be part of a group, to be “one of the gang,” to share not only in the work but in the play, in the joking, the beer after a long day, the weekend golf or tennis games, the barbecues. Most people want to be liked, asked opinions of, included in the coffee klatches, have others drop into their offices for a chat, get a pat on the back, told a joke or even made fun of in a good-natured way. In other words, most people would like to be seen as an integral part of the organization, group or community as opposed to feeling isolated, different, or not acceptable – all of which leads to feelings of alienation, sadness or anger. Some companies have no trouble with embracing diversity in the work force; everyone’s “differentness” is accepted as bringing something value-added to the organization. Yet there are still other companies composed of mostly white, Christian, middle-class, heterosexual males – the “good ol' boys” club – that have difficulties integrating a different person into their inner circle. There are two types of issues in these situations: One is if you’re African American, Latino, Asian, female, gay, transgender, physically handicapped, much older or younger or belong to a different religious group. It takes a long time to “earn your stripes,” “pass muster,” in order to be accepted as “one of them.” It may never happen, no matter how much one attempts to joke, go out with the gang or make oneself useful. Several female attorneys recently shared that many male clients still request male attorneys, not only because of their own comfort level but, more important, because they perceive a man to be more forceful at gaining the upper hand in a confrontational situation. This, of course, is not true. However, if the female wins points, she is labeled as a ball-buster. There is a fine line between being seen as assertive and aggressive. Either way, it is still to this day challenging for a woman to attain equality in predominantly male organizations. Another example: People of color stand out in an all-white, all-male gathering and tend to not be included – the assumption being that it is easier to be with your own kind, you know what to expect, how to behave. There is often an underlying question: Are these people hired to fill some quota versus on the basis of merit or competency? Yet there is another issue that has not been addressed. Suppose you’re
a white male in a white, Christian, heterosexual male culture and you appear to fit in, are accepted as such, but you may be Jewish, Muslim or some other religion, transgender or gay and no one has a clue. There is no awareness of your religious affiliation or your sexual preference. When anti-Semitic, racist or homophobic comments are made in the office, one can feel uncomfortable. It is possible that divulging one’s identity and/or affiliation would close the doors of acceptance into the group. Although today’s corporate cultures frown on such comments, it still happens. This can also be true of some very light-skinned African Americans who have “passed” as Caucasian. The dilemma lies in whether not telling implies that you’re hiding something and, therefore, viewed as lying. The question is not whether you're telling or not telling but how to react to slurs that attack one’s identity. Nonreaction can make one feel like a coward; protesting in the name of prejudice, but not mentioning one’s own identity, feels like a cop-out. This double bind can be very painful. I know of a young Jewish man and of a gay man, both of whom said that they would not make partner in their law firms if those traits were revealed. Some people would advise them to leave the company, but this does not confront the issue – and seems like a cop-out. My advice: Make partner, become part of the group, fit in, become wellliked, well-known, well-accepted. Once accomplished, inform them. It will confront their prejudices and perhaps even change their minds. Telling too soon and not making partner does not accomplish anything, but demonstrating that you can fit in while being different is a lesson to be learned by all. Climate Action Plan support gathers steam By DAVE SCHWAB Momentum is building among a broad coalition of environmental and governmental groups in support of the City of San Diego's Climate Action Plan (CAP), an ambitious proposal to get to 100 percent clean energy use by 2035 through transit, walking and biking. The CAP is a package of policies intended to benefit San Diego’s environment and economy. Some believe it will help create new jobs in the renewable energy industry, improve public health and air quality, enhance water quality, more efficiently use existing resources, increase local energy production, improve quality of life and save taxpayer money. The plan clearly identifies steps the City of San Diego can take to achieve the 2035 targets. That list includes: crafting an ordinance that requires developers to install conduits for solar and electric vehicle charging stations in new construction; create a renewable energy program; develop a zero waste plan; and change policy to have a majority of the City’s fleet be electric vehicles. On Nov. 30, City Councilmembers David Alvarez and Todd Gloria were joined by an alliance of community, business, labor, public health and environmental organizations at a press conference to support San Diego's CAP. Later that same day, the CAP unanimously passed the City Council's Environment Committee. It is expected to go before the full City Council this December for adoption. “This plan strikes the right balance between protecting our environment and growing our economy,” said Mayor Kevin Faulconer when he released a draft of the CAP for public review in September of 2014. “San Diego's environmental and business communities are once again taking the exceptional step of joining together in support of this plan because we all agree that clean

technology, renewable energy and economic growth are vital to our city's future. We’re going to hand down to our children a San Diego that is cleaner than it was when we received it.” “As a councilmember representing our coastal communities, I have long advocated for the City of San Diego to adopt a Climate Action Plan to help protect our environment for decades to come," said Councilmember Sherri Lightner, whose District 1 includes La Jolla. “This plan positions San Diego as the national leader in climate action by powering our lives with 100 percent locally made clean energy that

More people arrested for violent crimes than property crimes in San Diego County, report says More people were arrested in 2014 for committing violent crimes than for property crimes in San Diego County, according to an annual report issued by the SANDAG Criminal Justice Research Division. In all, law enforcement officers made 15,566 arrests for violent crimes compared with 11,524 arrests for property offenses, according to the report –– Arrests 2014: Law Enforcement Response to Crime in the San Diego Region. Violent crime arrests edged up 2 percent over the previous year, fueled in part by an increase in the number
of adults arrested for rape, murder and assault and juveniles arrested for robbery and aggravated assault. In the same period, arrests for property crimes –– such as theft, burglary, larceny and arson –– declined 3 percent. The region’s overall arrest rate –– 33.1 arrests per 1,000 residents –– marked a 3 percent drop from 2013 and the second straight decline for the region. Researchers noted that adult arrest figures saw significant oneyear declines for weapons-related offenses, which were down 13 per-
cent; for felony-level property crimes, which were down 12 percent; and for felony-level alcohol/drug offenses, which declined 10 percent. “It is too early to say definitively, but these decreases could be related in part to Proposition 47,” said Cynthia Burke, SANDAG Criminal Justice Research Division director. “Implementation of that measure began in the final quarter of 2014, and it resulted in many property-related crimes and drug-related crimes being reduced to misdemeanors.” Other notable facts in the report:
• There was a 19 percent drop in arrests of minors involved in property crimes. This continues a steady, five-year decline from just more than 3,000 arrests in 2010 to approximately 1,400 in 2014. • Overall, juvenile arrest rate declined 8 percent and have remained lower than adult arrests for the second consecutive year. • Until 2012, the arrest rate for minors was traditionally higher than adults. • Overall, the number of adults arrested dropped 3 percent, but adults still comprise 92 percent of
all arrests. • On average, 29 adults were arrested each day for misdemeanor DUI, making it the most common reason for an adult to be arrested in the region. • Misdemeanor-level prostitution arrests dropped 39 percent. The Criminal Justice Research Division of SANDAG functions as the clearinghouse for regional criminal justice information. On an annual basis, the division prepares a report on local criminal justice agencies’ response to crime in the region as measured by arrest statistics.
La Jollans voice pros, cons on short-term rentals debate By DAVE SCHWAB Like two boxers eyeing each other at the start of a long-anticipated fight, those for and against a proposed city ordinance to restrict proliferating short-term vacation rentals (STVRs) were ready to brawl at a Dec. 3 public hearing on the hot-button issue before the city Planning Commission. A recently proposed city ordinance to regulate STVRs creates a new use category and amends an existing one. It establishes a separately regulated — and new — use category for whole home rentals: Short-Term Vacation Rentals. The new proposed ordinance includes Home Sharing (owner-occupied rentals) in the same use category as the current Boarding and Lodging category. It proposes limits on visitor frequency, occupancy and eligible housing types in both Home Sharing and STVRs. The intent of the proposed ordinance is to minimize the impact of STVRs and Home Sharing on quality of life, especially relating to noise, occupancy, parking and trash. It allows for the STVR and Home Sharing uses while maintaining the purpose of a the Single-Family Residential Zone, which, according to the San Diego Municipal Code, is "to promote neighborhood quality, character, and livability.” Both sides were continuing to issue statements supporting their positions in the days and weeks building up to the hearing.

Sadly, in contrast, the City is not enforcing its own rules, which prohibit short-term whole-house rentals less than 30 days. If you're that hard up for money to rent out your place on weekends, please move somewhere else.” — Liesel Miller, Mt. Soledad • “I have no issues with long-term rentals and get along with my neighbors who are renters and owners. Short-term renters are generally on a late-night schedule, as it is their vacation. They need to do this in an area designated for such activity. My HOA now has a 30-day minimum for rentals and it has bought peace and tranquillity back into our mixed community for owners and renters. Longterm renters are just as upset by short-term renters. … “There is a difference between someone renting a home to live in versus a short-term party place.” — Narelle MacKenzie, Village of La Jolla north of Pearl Street Save San Diego Neighborhoods (SSDN), a grassroots group that has emerged to support stricter regulation of STVRs, made the following statement prior to the Dec. 3 Planning Commission hearing: “We believe in the sanctity of residential neighborhoods. And we believe that when it comes to property rights, the most fundamental right is the ability of residents to enjoy a peaceful, suitable environment in which to raise their children and live their lives.”

All San Diego fire stations will be Toys for Tots drop-off points The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department is once again working with Toys for Tots to help bring smiles to Christmas morning. Every San Diego fire station has a collection box to help make contributing to Toys for Tots convenient. “With a fire station in every neighborhood, San Diego Fire
is a great partner in our program,” said Marine Capt. Evita Mosqueda-Chapman, the San Diego Toys for Tots coordinator. “The stations are not only drop-off points, but the Fire Department moves the toys to central collection points so our Marines can more easily get them to the
Reserve Center to be sorted and distributed.” Residents can drop off a new, unwrapped toy at a San Diego fire station any time until Dec. 18 and be assured it will get to Toys for Tots. “We’re glad to do our part,” San Diego Fire Chief Brian Fennessy said. “The
Fire-Rescue Department has worked with Toys for Tots for several years, but the credit for this program all goes to the Marine Reservists.” Mosqueda-Chapman says their warehouse is currently completely out of toys for boys and girls, ages 10 to 12, and girls 6 to 9 years old. “We
want and need toys for all ages, but the warehouse is bare for those age groups now,” she said. Toys for Tots started in Los Angeles in 1947 and through the years has collected and distributed nearly half a billion toys to less fortunate children nationwide.
Owens gets 19 years in Fiesta Island crash By NEAL PUTNAM Theresa Lynn Owens, found guilty Oct. 8 of driving under the influence of methamphetamine when she drove the wrong way and ran down six bicyclists on Fiesta Island in 2014, received a sentence of 19 years in state prison Nov. 19. San Diego Superior Court Judge Eugenia Eyherabide structured the sentence with consecutive terms that included five years for causing great bodily injury to Juan Carlos Vinolo, 44, of La Jolla, who is paralyzed from the chest down. Three-year consecutive terms were given for injuries to Robert Bernhard, who on Nov. 19 told the judge he found himself underneath Vinolo on the car’s windshield. Three years were also imposed for injuries to Beatrice Dormoy, who was partially embedded into the windshield, and to Stephen Hale, whose elbow was shattered. Terms of one year each consecutively were given for injuries suffered by Logan Bass, 27, of Pacific Beach, whose ribs were struck by the car mirror, and Kenneth Leipper, who testified he was “black and blue” from the car hitting him. Owens also drew three years consecutively for DUI. Vinolo had planned to attend the sentencing, but a last-minute medical complication caused him to miss it, said Deputy District Attorney Jessica Coto. READ MORE ONLINE AT

The company's stated mission is to “help transform men to 'look' and 'perform' their best, thanks to our expertise in men's hair care, styling, grooming, products and consultation.” “Men don't like going into a women's salon, where it's the fishbowl effect; you get your hair washed over here and then go over there,” said 18/8 owner Lori Bolton. “So (the founders) came up with a unique concept, which is very discreet for the discerning man, very professional and upscale, where you're greeted at the door, have a beverage while you're waiting for the stylist then are taken back, put
on a robe and have everything done at one station.” At 18/8, men get the whole nine yards in a full-service salon devoted exclusively to their needs. “Women have it; why not men?” asked Bolton, noting male patrons get their scalps and necks massaged with hot rocks, their hair washed, not once but twice, as well as having their hair cut and styled. “Then it's a hot-towel finish,” said Bolton, noting the whole procedure takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Bolton noted 18/8 offers a full range of services, including manicures, pedicures, facials and waxing. “It's a whole unique concept specifically for men,” she said. The name 18/8 derives from the making of stainless steel, wherein raw steel has the elements chromium and nickel added to it to “polish” it and make it stand out, while adding corrosion resistance and strength. The figures refer to the percentages of chromium and nickel used in the manufacturing process. Asked what a “typical” client is, Bolton said it's males 24 to 70. She pointed out, however, that there's a huge amount of diversity within that age range. “It's people who care about their
looks,” she said of the 18/8 client. “They're looking for something different, unique.” Bolton noted clients can be businessmen, students or just about everyone in between. “We had a group of teenagers in here recently — they loved it,” she noted. 18/8 hair stylist Tori Montroy noted clients get face-to-face consultation while at their work station. “We figure out what you need, and I explain what's going to be done, the process of the haircut,” she said. “The whole time, we make sure it's comfortable and relaxing for you.” Montroy said it's “very rewarding” working with clients to ensure they look their best. At the front desk, lead receptionist Chris Sanchez talked about the special product lines carried by 18/8 — Griff's, American Crew, Go 247 Men, Reuzel and DS Laboratories. “The thing about our salon is that it is scientifically targeted to each specific guest,” Sanchez said, noting there are products specifically designed for younger men with more active lifestyles and for surfers spending lots of time in the water. The Las Posadas pro-
cession is a walking reenactment of the biblical story of Mary and Joseph’s search for a birthplace for Jesus. Everyone is invited to join the candlelit procession, starting at 4:45 p.m., and sing traditional holiday songs in both Spanish and English as the players go from inn to inn, symbolically asking for lodging. The procession will include local actors playing the parts of Joseph and the innkeepers. The procession culminates with
a live nativity tableau in front of Casa de Estudillo along with a choir performance. The events are sponsored by Wells Fargo Foundation and The Old Town State Park Merchants Association. Spinelli's La Jolla trunk show: witness the birth of a brand Fashion Files

Laura Gambucci, of La Jolla's Laura Gambucci boutique, presented a trunk show on Nov. 21 in her amazing venue, located at 7655 Girard Ave. Gambucci carries remarkable designers, such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Barbara Bui and Philosophy. The trunk show showcased an exceptional line of fine jewelry by Spinelli Kilcollin (SK). The designer, Yves Spinelli, has a warm personality whose passion for his work is evident. He grew up in the fashion business with his father, Antoine Spinelli, a hairdresser who also made jewelry. Spinelli is an L.A.-based designer who worked at Maxfield Gallery on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. While there, he saw a need for minimal and architectural pieces of jewelry. He also wanted something that was versatile with multiple uses. Presto – he began designing and came up with his signature Galaxy Rings, selling them at Maxfield Gallery. They are interlocking rings that could be worn on three fingers or collapsed and worn on one finger. These geo-

metric shapes are connected with a mix of gauge thicknesses in different colors and can be worn a number of ways. Spinelli also wanted timeless fine jewelry, to be handed down over generations. After designing his first line of rings, Spinelli introduced Pave diamonds set in these geometric forms. The diamonds come in all colors similar to the metals. The goal was to create unisex pieces so they would appeal to everyone.
Many of the lines are named after constellations, such as Libra, Pisces and Orion. One line of bracelets is named after mythical places, such as Atlantis, and many others are named after mythological characters, such as Atlas. My favorite was Janus, made from strips of leather woven around fresh water pearls. The name Janus is Greek for “two-faced gods.” This perfectly describes these gorgeous long strands, leather on one side and pearls on the other. They are the crème de la crème! Currently, these must-have trea-

Michael Frayn’s riotous backstage comedy, “Noises Off,” is set for a Broadway revival, with previews beginning Dec. 17 at the Roundabout Theatre Company. In the cast are two locally admired actors, Campbell Scott (a fabulous Hamlet as directed by Jack O’Brien at the Old Globe Theatre in 1990) and Rob McClure, who played Chaplin in the musical “Limelight: The Story of Charlie Chaplin” at the Playhouse in 2010 prior to its Broadway run as simply “Chaplin.” Tom Nelis, seen in the ensemble of Paula Vogel’s “Indecent” at La Jolla Playhouse through Dec. 10, received his MFA from UCSD. He dedicates his performance to the late Arthur Wagner, founder of the university's Department of Theatre and Dance. Nelis is remembered for his magnificent performance in the 2002 Playhouse production of Charles Mee’s “Wintertime.”

Closer to home In his pre-curtain speech at the opening of Sarah Ruhl’s “The Oldest Boy” (a visually ravishing production through Dec. 12 at San Diego Rep), director Sam Wood-
house reminded those present that the Rep is in its 40th anniversary season. The November issue of American Theatre magazine celebrates one of the Rep’s most renowned alumni, Ron Campbell, known as the clown in Cirque du Soleil’s “Kooza,” in which he toured the world for five years. Campbell, who lives in the Bay Area, returns to the Rep March 10 through April 3 (tickets on sale now) in Rep co-founder D. W. Jacobs’ two-hour monologue, “R. Buckminster Fuller: The History (and Mystery) of the Universe.” Campbell created the piece at the Rep with Jacobs at the helm in 2000. It has since toured nationwide. In the magazine spread, playwright/director Jacobs celebrates Campbell’s “powerful animal vitality,” which he compares to that of Chaplin and Buster Keaton. Obie Award winner Jose Rivera’s “The Last Book of Homer,” whose protagonist is kidnapped by a Mexican drug cartel while making a film about the Trojan War. Traditionally, Amigos del Rep readings take place in the theater’s lobby. However, in the Lyceum Space at the same hour, Intrepid Theatre Company was scheduled to present a reading of Eytan Grinnell’s Oedipus-centric “Called to be King.” Both readings were billed in the Lyceum Space. Intrepid prevailed in that theater (in which it's presenting “Over the Rainbow”). Then, because their interval would have interfered with the Rivera reading had it been in the lobby, the latter was moved into the Lyceum itself. I think everyone wound up where they belonged. No blood was shed. Read all about it! In its email newsletter of November 24, San Diego Museum of Art slipped the dates of ion theatre’s production of Stephen Sond-
heim and James Lapine’s 1984 musical, “Sunday in the Park With George,” which received the Pulitzer Prize the following year. To be directed by ion’s brilliant Associate Artistic Director Kim Strassburger, the musical about Georges Seurat’s painting technique (and other things) will be seen January 29-February 13 in SDMA’s James S. Copley Auditorium. It was inspired by Seurat’s painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Knowing ion, the casting will likely be brilliant as well. Ion’s current offering, Annie Baker’s “The Aliens,” is superbly cast and directed by founding Artistic Directors Claudio Raygoza and Glenn Paris. By DAVE SCHWAB There's a lot more business going on along the commercial strip on Avenida de la Playa in La Jolla Shores than meets the eye. At first blush, the business district would appear to have about 40 or 50 brick-and-mortar merchants. But upon closer inspection, accounting for all the professionals and home offices there, the number is actually much larger. “There are more than 128 registered businesses in the Shores,” said Tom Spano, general manager of Piatti, one of the Shores cornerstone restaurants, who is also current president of the La Jolla Shores Business
Sea Cave Kayaks, The Cheese Shop, Everyday California, and Sushi Mori are just some of the local businesses located in La Jolla Shores.
Association micro-BID. Spano said the association has been engaged on a number of fronts promoting new stop signs and other traffic-calming safety measures, community beautification and community events and fundraisers. “We had an art show this past September that was very well
received,” Spano said, adding, “We're working to develop more things like that, like a cars-and-coffee event we held with the Alfa Romeo and Fiat auto clubs this past November. We've also had a children-oriented fall fest for eight years and are planning another one for the spring.” Spano said the micro-BID has also
secured nonprofit status, which will allow it to accept tax-deductible donations. He added business “has come back strong” from the long construction period for infrastructure improvements, which was mostly completed before the summer construction moratorium kicked in. The projects began in September of 2014.

Holiday wreaths come with an eternity of symbols
It may be just a beautiful wreath to you, but in Old England, it doubled as a house number.
I've always enjoyed wreaths and have several in my garden that I change to suit the season. Wreaths have been part of many different cultures dating back to ancient times and were used to signify a multitude of customs and meanings. The round shape of a wreath is said to symbolize the circle of life and eternity, for it has no beginning or end. The ancient Romans and Greeks used wreaths made of laurel and olive branches to honor victory, strength and leadership. The word “wreath” is taken from the Old English word
"writha," which means to twist or band. In Old England, many homes used wreaths instead of numbers as identification. These wreaths were made from flowers, branches and foliage taken from the property and that were unique to it. Since my rosebushes often hide my house number, I sometimes have to identify my home as the one with the "wreath" on the green garden gate, and I never realized I was using an Old English custom at my English Tudor-style home. versity. It was established to recognize, support and encourage young Americans who have demonstrated a commitment to advancing the cause of positive race relations at their schools or communities. Information about the program is online at princeton.edu/pprize. This year, San Diego became the 25th region to grant the award. The winner in each region receives a cash award of $1,000 and is invited to Princeton University to attend the Princeton Prize Symposium on Race in April. This 2½-day event includes conversations and workshops on race relations with other regional winners, local high school students, Princeton students, alumni and faculty. For Anshu, the urge to make a difference started with an incident in her local public library. “It began with a pair of gloves,” she said. “It had been my first day of volunteering, and my mentor, who had been assigned to teach me how to shelve books, had worn gloves when shaking my hands, as if my Indian skin possessed some germs her Caucasian skin did not. She had even gone so far as to bluntly refuse to assist me due to the color of my skin.” The encounter shocked the then seventh-grader into action. Almost every Saturday for the next four years,

she conducted a program at the University City public library branch for younger students. They would spend the day learning about different countries and different cultures. “They were very excited,” Anshu said, “and would wrap their arms around my legs. I don’t think they realized they were learning about other cultures. “For me,” she explained, “I had never really dealt with racism, and it was very hard to get through that first incident. I researched it and learned that education is the best way to fight racism, to learn that we are all human and we all have a heart.” Anshu is currently applying to college, where she hopes to study economics and communications. She is editor-in-chief of her school newspaper, The Commander. She is used to starting and leading groups like her school’s Red Cross Club and Tennis Club. Anshu no longer leads the educational program she founded, but it has been maintained by other students. “I thought racism was a thing of the past,” she said, “but it’s not, so I am proud that I can see [the program] continue.” Two other deserving high school students in the region have been awarded certificates of accomplishment for their efforts to promote racial harmony.
