The North Course at Torrey Pines Golf Course has reopened after a comprehensive nine-month, $12.6 million renovation. Among the changes, the front and back nines were reversed, allowing golfers spectacular ocean and canyon views as they finish their rounds.

Work to repair damaged storm drain improvements on Avenida de la Playa is done until next year.

Senior city construction engineer Stephen Lindsay said work west of El Paseo Grande to remove a bio-filter clean box and reconnect 72-inch storm drain pipe is finished for 2016. “After the new year, we'll finish the curbs, gutters and sidewalks and make it all nice,” Lindsay said. “Then we'll go down to the outfall structure storm drain box culvert at the beach that will be replaced.”

Lindsay said completing work on El Paseo Grande will likely take three or four weeks, adding work on the beach outfall structure is anticipated to take about five months, with completion by the start of the summer work moratorium beginning Memorial Day. There will be some disruption to local business off and on during construction in 2017, with Lindsay expecting “minimal impact to the community.”

The future of San Diego healthcare is here Jacobs Medical Center opens on UCSD’s East Campus

By BLAKE BUNCH On Sunday, Nov. 20, UCSD Health opened the doors to the $943 million Jacobs Medical Center. The new 245-bed facility represents a future wave of healthcare for the area, boasting iPads as room controls, floor-length windows and various technological amenities to enhance a patient’s care. While many San Diegans question the direct need for

such a large-capacity healthcare facility, Dr. David Brenner, vice chancellor for health services and dean of the School of Medicine at UCSD, finds that by 2030 most will be singing a different tune.

The project, which has roughly taken a decade or so to come to fruition from the idea stage to completed construction, will suit specified needs of San Diegans for years to come.

“It was always a long-term goal of ours to build a healthcare facility that was contiguous with the rest of UCSD’s School of Medicine,” said Brenner. “Now that this project has come to completion, this world-class hospital and research center have brought our educational and healthcare system ahead of the curve.”

La Valencia Hotel was never intended to exist simply as a structure. Instead, it serves a much greater function – a symbol of the artistic spirit and progressive attitudes of those who frequent the classic Spanish-style edifice. Lavish, yet refined, with an underlying sense of bohemia and collective purpose, the “First Lady of La Jolla” turns 90 this December.

In the spirit of the Roaring Twenties (the hotel’s “golden era”), they will be holding a Gatsby Gala on Dec. 15 to celebrate the occasion.

While natives surely mourn the loss of their beloved Whaling Bar, La Valencia, like La Jolla itself, has transitioned gracefully into the times in which she exists. The sheer beauty and steadfast character of the establishment, approaching the better end of a century, remains a constant in the heart of any La Jollan.

‘Humble’ beginnings La Valencia opened for business on Dec. 15, 1926, originally as Los Apartmentos de Sevilla. This name was seldom used, however, and was designed to blend finer elements of various styles with Spanish architecture. The chief architect, Reginald Johnson, was a La Jollan esteemed for

his knowledge of classic Spanish architecture. Though the idea to build this now-iconic hotel was initially unstable at best, the original owners, MacArthur Gorton and Roy B. Wiltsie, managed to secure funding of around $200,000 for its construction.

During the height of the Jazz Age, the grand opening of the apartmenthotel was an opulent affair. With his connections in Hollywood, Gorton understood the necessity of the budding hamlet’s endorsement of his seaside retreat in La Jolla. Though in close proximity to the City of Angels, it was far enough removed to serve as a de facto getaway for some of the finest actors and actresses known to man.

The hotel was formally renamed La Valencia two years later, on Dec.

29, 1928. Original architect, William Templeton Johnson, designed and constructed an edition that included the present-day lounge and overhead domiciles. The hotel began to host movie stars, heads of state, international men and women of influence, and just plain guests. Originally complete with 21 apartments and 12 single rooms, a tea room, and banquet hall, the “Pink Lady” was tailored to the charismatic and creative set.

In the late 1930s, La Valencia opened the doors to La Cita, a tworoom restaurant complete with “pewter candleholders, antique wooden shutters, and carved ivory scrimshaw.” The original concept had been to maintain a rotating series of paintings in tempera, of which they would be replaced every 45 days or so. This assured that resident artist Wing Howard was permanently employed, and supplanted with cocktails, of course.

The war effort With its close proximity to the naval bases of San Diego, during WWII, all walks of life would trade two-hour shifts to scan the horizon for enemy ships or planes. The hotel became home to countless young offiSEE PINK, Page 10

My late son Paul used to say no one over 80 should be driving. Yeah right! I was still happily driving at ninety. Then something happened: I fractured my patella and did not drive my car for several weeks.

After my brace was finally removed from my leg, I went to get into my car to run some errands; the battery was dead. The man from AAA came, recharged my battery, and asked if I was interested in selling my car. Odd question I thought.

How much is it worth I asked. A quick look on his smartphone, and he came up with the Blue Book estimate for a 2004 Subaru Outback: $3,000.

That got me thinking. I don’t like to admit this, but I am guessing I’m not the only 90-year-old who feels this way. I used to get into my car and drive off without much preparation as to where I was going; I just knew.

Not anymore, now I have to map my route in my head before I take off, and I have a slight tinge of anxiety if it’s a new destination. I am also more cautious, more aware of my surroundings; I maintain a heightened stage of alertness, which is not really that pleasant. There is a small feeling of uncertainty, of less confidence in my driving ability.

Although my reflexes are good, I know they cannot be as sharp as in

pressurized to suit those undergoing chemotherapy. The Vassiliadis Family Pavilion presents one of the greatest achievements for the facility, and is where neurosurgery, organ transplants, advanced imaging and other specialized surgery will take place.

It must be noted that all 245 rooms are equipped with “knowledge walls,” which allow patients to control the comfort of their own room, as well as procure information regarding their current conditions.

“One thing most people tend to overlook, is that our older hospitals will be deemed unsuitable relatively soon,” said Dr. Brenner. “With the Jacobs Medical Center, we can provide exclusive care for all San Diegans.”

The facility is now open, and has generally received outstanding reviews from those who have occupied its new wards. Though some remain shortsighted, this overall advancement in medicine is arguably beneficial for all residents of America’s Finest City.

My spouse and I are getting a divorce, do I need to change my estate planning documents?

Yes, if you want someone other than your ex-spouse or stepchildren to inherit your assets. If you do not want your previous spouse to inherit assets in your retirement plans, IRA, and 401K, you must change the beneficiary with your financial institution. With a few exceptions, assets with Virginia Weber Laskowitz designated beneficiaries are generally not distributed per the & Shannon T. O’Neill terms of your Trust. An order in your Marital Settlement Agreement may also affect the way the assets are distributed. Conflicts between your estate plan and other beneficiary designations will not be resolved the way you want until you take action and change the beneficiary designation forms and file them with the financial institution.

For example, if your Trust states that your home and retirement account go to your current husband, but your ex-husband's name is on your deed and 401(k) plan, there is a problem. The deed and the beneficiary designation will prevail over what is in your will or trust.

Unless the title of your property and beneficiary designations are consistent with your trust or will, they will not be honored. If you have recently changed your marital status, please gather the beneficiary designation statements for all retirement accounts and life insurance and update them.

So I started thinking about not only myself, but about the limitations most older people suffer from that can influence their driving abilities. A lot of my friends have arthritis which makes it more difficult to turn the steering wheel and press the brake and accelerator.

Moreover given the normal slowing of reflexes, seniors might not respond quickly enough to avoid an accident. Then there are issues with our vision and hearing not being as sharp as in our younger days. I always worry about missing road signs; I have to get closer to see street names and house numbers.

Older people also take more medications, some of which may impact driving. I have not fallen asleep while driving, but I have fallen asleep while reading a book and even at long, boring lectures.

All of the above, plus the fact that I have a few dents and scrapes on my car, are warning signs that it may very well be time to stop driving. This made me pause and decide not to push my luck, and so I bit the bullet and sold my car, admitting that I am part of that at-risk population mentioned before. I just may have saved someone’s life, as well as my own.

To my readers, a bit of advice: If you can relate to the feelings expressed in this column, you may also realize that it’s time for you to make that difficult decision to stop driving—and not wait for that decision to be made for you!

my younger days. Even though I practice turning my head to see beyond the blind spot, I am aware that it does not turn as far as it used to. It may also be that not having driven for a few weeks increased my tentativeness.

All this led to a couple of days of unpleasant cogitation on whether or not to give up driving. It is a momentous decision, because it changes the status of one’s independence.

It causes one to rely on others for transportation, which I heartily dislike doing; I will always feel like it’s an imposition to be dependent on others. When I finally decided to give up driving, my daughter said she was relieved (after having been concerned about this for quite some time). I am both sad and wistful (and also a bit relieved).

I did some research on older drivers and came across some dismal statistics. In collaboration with Harvard Health Publications, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety on Age and Driving reported the following: “Per mile traveled, fatal crash rates increase noticeably starting at age 70–74 and are highest among drivers 85 and older.

The increased fatal crash risk among older drivers is largely due to their increased susceptibility to injury, particularly chest injuries, and medical complications, rather than an increased tendency to get into crashes.

By 2020, there will be more than 40 million drivers in the 65 and above age group. Older drivers have higher rates of fatal crashes based on miles driven than any other age

Named after Joan and Irwin Jacobs, who provided around $100 million in gifts to UCSD, the new building reflects a continued healthcare “boom” in San Diego—and Southern California at large.

Irwin Jacobs arrived in San Diego in 1966, and was the co-founder of Qualcomm. When he first arrived, Jacobs noted that UCSD had “just opened a medical school, but retained no hospital of any kind.”

Brenner touts these three separate pavilions for their specialized care.

“The top floor (Rady Pavilion) will serve women and infants in highrisk pregnancy situations,” said Dr. Brenner. “Directly underneath, and for the first time in the history of San Diego, cancer patients are able to walk about the ward.”

La Jolla MAD ratified, yet in bad timing

By DAVE SCHWAB Now that La Jolla has voted for a Maintenance Assessment District (MAD), questions remain as to whom will pay for public improvements, when it will start, how will it be administered and what will — or should — it do?

Recently, a little more than half of the approximately 1,300 parcels within the Village voted on the proposed MAD spearheaded by nonprofit, Enhance La Jolla. The vote was fifty-six percent “yes” and fortyfour percent “no” for forming the district. Eighty-five percent supported local control with Enhance La Jolla running it, versus the fifteen percent who wanted the city to pilot the new district.

“The Village of La Jolla now joins over sixty other MAD’s in San Diego which lobbied to take greater control of their community environment and experience,” said Mark DiBella, Enhance La Jolla spokesman.

DiBella however noted, due to timing, that “assessment fees cannot be collected until January 2018 and the fees will be solely committed to Village (district) maintenance to include sidewalk cleaning, graffiti, weed abatement and extra trash pick-up.”

Of equal importance, noted DiBella, is that Enhance La Jolla, which will manage the MAD, “will be able to immediately accept private donations for potential capital projects such as new waste receptacles and benches, signage and lighting.”

until the maintenance programs begin in 2018.

“In 2017, Enhance La Jolla looks forward to partnering with other La Jolla organizations such as the Town Council, Merchants Association and Parks & Beaches to work on unified goals for beautification and cleanliness for the community,” said DiBella.

A MAD is a legal mechanism by which property owners can vote to assess themselves to receive enhanced maintenance, landscaping, and lighting services. These services are above and beyond the City’s baseline general services.

There are currently sixty one MADs throughout San Diego.

La Jollans weighed in on what they'd like — and not like — to see done with MAD funding.

“MAD will cost its members and the money should be spent on serious general beautification of the central Village — regular powerwashing of sidewalks, establishing and maintaining uniform, attractive and numerous sidewalk benches and trash receptacles throughout the zone, and paying for establishment and maintenance of lamppost containers of flowers or seasonal greens throughout the MAD area,” said civic activist Fran Zimmerman. “For the record, the City

should be repairing broken curbs and cleaning the gutters of La Jolla Village (MAD zone) on a regular and frequent schedule, to say nothing about mitigating the stench wafting into town from the Cove.”

Ann Parode Dynes of La Jolla Parks and Beaches, Inc. noted the maintenance district's “potential is terrific,” while pointing out, “They cannot begin maintenance projects until 2017 or later, but have put out a call for capital projects which could be funded through philanthropy. I think this will be a terrific addition to the Village.”

Longtime parks planner and incorporation backer Melinda Merryweather had a different take.

“I personally do not like or understand the concept, seems like another plan to get a few people a paycheck,” said Merryweather. “We should be our own city.”

Another parks and beaches board member, Sally Miller, said “My wish for the downtown core is to greatly reduce the neon lights/signs and to keep the sidewalks clear of all clutter. Clear sidewalks make it more pedestrian (shopper) friendly, and the neon signs cheapen the uniqueness of the downtown charm.”

Enhance La Jolla has said the new MAD will privately fund and construct projects in public spaces, ensure ongoing maintenance services, help create and maintain inviting public spaces, enhance the Village's beauty and quality of life, leverage property owner assessments to generate supplemental funds from the City and improve property values.

UCSD campus and health care workers go on strike More than 200 UC San Diego campus and health system employees took to the picket lines Nov. 18 over alleged labor violations.

UCSD skilled trades workers represented by Teamsters Local 2010, such as campus and hospital electri-

cians, mechanics and facilities workers, began the 24-hour strike one day after several hundred of their counterparts at UCLA took similar actions.

Groups of striking employees picketed at three locations on campus and blocked deliveries and access to con-

struction sites. They said they are paid well below the prevailing wage and want a 25 percent pay hike over four years.

UCSD said when the workers joined the Teamsters, management quickly moved to open negotiations.

MBMA Dolphin Tank What is MBMA Dolphin Tank?

Just like Shark Tank, each team develops a product, from concept to sales at MBMA’s Craft Fair.

This begins with great teachers giving resources to help with an idea, design, cost analysis, budgeting just like business’ do.

To obtain the funding, students develop business plans, groups present to panels of parents in the business field, their bio, product, financial plan, and possible customers (MBMA families).

MBMA’s emphasis on technology provides students with selfconfidence to create multi leveled presentations.

North Course at Torrey Pines reopens with scenic holes after $12.6 million renovation Following a comprehensive ninemonth, $12.6 million renovation, the North Course at Torrey Pines Golf Course has reopened to an eagerly awaiting golfing public.

Originally designed by William F. Bell and opened in 1957, the renovated North Course now stands to rival the popularity of the world famous South Course, host of the U.S. Open in 2008 and in 2021. The North and South courses, owned and maintained by the City, are both public courses, and the North averages approximately 82,000 rounds of play per year.

“We are excited to re-open the North Course to the global golf community,” said Herman Parker, director of Park and Recreation for the City of San Diego. “Torrey Pines is a world-renowned golf facility, and we are pleased to be able to offer two outstanding courses, each with their own unique characteristics.

Now, no San Diego golf excursion is complete without playing both the North and South at Torrey.”

Course architect and golfing great Tom Weiskopf visited Torrey Pines this week to officially unveil the renovated North Course, a project that holds a special place in his golf career and design portfolio. His first career win came at Torrey Pines at the 1968 Andy Williams-San Diego Open, predecessor to the current Farmers Insurance Open played every January at Torrey Pines.

“It’s really special,” Wesikopf said.

“And to work on a piece of property that amazing doesn’t happen very often. The sheer beauty of the place always captivates me. Now people can look forward to playing 36 incredible holes at Torrey Pines by playing the North and the South.”

While the North Course maintains a similar feel to its original design, there were some significant changes. The number of bunkers has been reduced from 59 to 41, and the average green size increased from 4,500 square feet to 6,400.

All 18 greens were completely reconstructed to USGA standards, with the existing poa annua grass replaced with 100 percent bent grass – a Tyee 007 blend. The front and back nines were also reversed, allowing golfers spectacular ocean and canyon views as they finish their rounds.

Carts paths have been replaced, and irrigation has been improved.

Greens were fitted with an advanced SubAir system that pulls moisture out of the surface and can cool greens during hot weather.

The work was completed on time and on budget.

“Switching the nines is very significant because the back nine is so iconic with its incredible views,” Weiskopf said. “The larger greens allow for more pin placements and more variety, and we’ve taken out bunkers but kept others that are

strategically placed.”

Weiskopf ’s renovations have successfully struck a balance between providing ample challenge for professional and scratch golfers and keeping the course playable for amateurs and casual golfers of all abilities. The North Course now features five sets of tees, allowing it to play as long as 7,258 yards or as short as 5,197. In total, the North has been lengthened nearly 200 yards from the tips.

“I tried to bring the North Course into the 21st century,” Weiskopf said. “It was built in the 1950s, and nothing of significance had ever been done to it. Everything we did in the redesign was to bring it up to current standards. It’s now a topof-the-line golf course.”

Weiskopf Design Group has completed 60 golf course design projects since 1985. Among those are five that have been included in Golf Magazine’s list of the top 100 courses in the world – Troon Golf and Country Club (Scottsdale, Ariz.); Forest Highlands Golf Club, The Canyon Course (Flagstaff, Ariz.); Troon North Golf Club, The Monument (Scottsdale, Ariz.); Loch Lomond Golf Club (Scotland) and Double Eagle Club (Galena, Ohio).

Weiskopf was named Golf Architect of the Year by Golf World magazine in 1996.

In November La Jolla Parks and Beaches Inc. approved conceptual schematic design for the La Jolla Cove Pavilion project, as well as sanctioning a concept plan for Black's Lookout.

The La Jolla Cove Pavilion is a long-term project to replace outdated and deteriorating restroom-shower facilities with an attractive, sustainable pavilion honoring the beauty of the Cove and Scripps Park.

Bill Magnuson of the La Jolla architectural firm of Mosher Drew, gave a slideshow presentation detailing plans for Cove shower-restroom improvements, the preliminary design of which was performed by Safdie Rabines Architects of La Jolla.

The architect used a metaphor to characterize the planned restroomshower facility's schematic design, which is now 30 percent complete.

“The roof is to be like a leaf gently settling into the forest in the trees amongst the park,” Magnuson said.

“It's actually two separate buildings with a butterfly roof, which is an open-trellis type structure hovering above it (restroom showers).”

Magnuson said Mosher Drew has refined Safdie Rabines' original design making minor changes, including creating more enclosed dumpster space and making the exterior of the buildings a sandstone color “like bluffs in La Jolla.” He added the roof will allow rainwater drainage into gutters, as well has having transparent plastic to protect the interiors of the buildings.

There are also a couple of “options” built into Mosher Drew's schematic plans, which Magnuson said could involve a “blue motif on the back wall, and/or introduction of clear or opaque panels.”

La Jolla Parks and Beaches (LJPB) board member Dr. Jane Reldan expressed concern about plans to remove mature trees around the new pavilion noting replacing them will “be a long time with no shade on the north side of these buildings.”

“Why not leave the trees there?” asked board member Cindy Greatrex, who pointed out replacement trees will be much smaller and take a long time to grow.

City engineers answered that they've been told that existing trees “might not be able to survive all the construction.” Magnuson noted that “substantial” trees in planters are proposed for the new development.

“Isn't the smooth concrete upper part of the building just waiting for graffiti?,” queried board member Phyllis Minick.

Magnuson answered there are building treatments that can be done to building exteriors to make them easier to paint over.

“This (design) feels utilitarian, plain,” noted board member John Shannon. “People who come to La Jolla are in awe of the beauty.

They're shocked when they look at our restroom facility now. It would seem like an opportunity to tell a story in some way, by doing something with the stone or cobble work.”

Board member Melinda Merryweather agreed. “To me this building has the feeling of a 1950s elementary school,” she said. “I'd love to have cobblestones going up the wall on the bottom. The park is so beautiful. The buildings seem so cold. I wish we could warm it up.”

LJPB board voted 14-2 to approve conceptual design plans with city officials pledging to return with more detailed plans later for final review.

Board member Patrick Ahern introduced a proposal to improve the Black's Lookout used by surfers at 9078 La Jolla Shores Lane.

“The lookout is dirty and old and it's a mess, and the fence up there is now falling,” said Ahern. “What we'd like to do is beautify it, not make it a place for people to hang out, just enhance the open space that already exists. The game plan would be to create a new view fence, so we have a nice lookout.”

Merryweather noted a trash can and a bench would be appropriate for the lookout, and asked that those two items be included in a motion to conceptually approve Ahern's lookout plan.

The group vote, with chair Dan Allen casting a tie-making vote, denying the amendment. The group then voted 14-3 in favor of the lookout's preliminary conceptual design.

Little Mensches and SD Coastkeeper volunteer to clean up the Shores

By BLAKE BUNCH On Sunday, Nov. 20, children from the La Jolla Jewish Community Center’s Little Mensches program teamed up with San Diego Coastkeeper to clean up the beach at La Jolla Shores.

The combination of a picturesque day, surf competition, and hundreds of other kids at the beach did not slow this group down one iota.

These children volunteered to sacrifice the better part of their Sunday, unencumbered by the surrounding festivities, indeed setting a prime example for all who reap the benefits of the Pacific Ocean.

While one may not envision heaps of plastic debris or other trash strewn about the pristine beaches of La Jolla, the Little Mensches, under the direction of SD Coastkeeper representative Kristin Kuhn, procured quite the haul at their beach cleanup.

“Typically, most of these beach cleanups I have been involved in are a few hours long,” said Chairperson

Under way since December 2013, the project was planned to be completed in March 2015 before the system failed. The cause of the system failure remains under investigation.

of the Little Mensches program, Jessica Fink. “While the kids will only be out here for an hour, it entails much more than simply keeping a beach clean. This instills a sense of pride and ownership in their community, as well as educates them on how to protect their waters for future generations.”

Roughly 30-plus children participated in the event, pacing the shores with trash-claws and bags, enthusiastically collecting trash as though it were sunken treasure.

The Little Mensches did not simply arrive, pick up trash, then ask for some ice cream on the drive home.

They remained attentive while Kuhn explained how putrefaction affects their waters, exhibits plastic bits all discovered in the stomach of one poor fish, and encourages them to take care of what they seemingly understand as necessary.

“You know, it’s one thing to organize these cleanups throughout all of the wonderful beaches that San Diego has to offer,” says Kuhn.

“While that is a large part of what [we] SD Coastkeepers organize, I find the educational arm provides a greater lasting impact. These kids really care and it shows.”

According to Kuhn, SD Coastkeepers organize monthly cleanups, sponsored cleanups, and “beach cleanups in a box.” The latter ensures that if one cannot make it to a cleanup, they are still able to do their part. In this case, SD Coastkeepers provide all the necessary tools for roughly twenty-five people to execute a beach cleanup. This “do it yourself ” option is ideal for “nonprofits, community centers, churches, family reunions, university service organizations, and other small groups looking to give back to the community.”

In total, the Little Mensches collected 52.5 pounds of debris off of the beach. That’s rather impressive for a group of children between the ages of 4 and 8. The items were then recycled in accordance with state regulations.

Angie Preisendorfer, Shores Association president and owner of Rusty Boardhouse at 2170 Avenida de la Playa, characterized the infrastructure failure as “a perfect storm of errors.”

“There was a lot major debris and the (water) pressure blew out what they (city) had done,” Preisendorfer said.

News of holiday-free construction was greeted like a present under the tree by La Jolla Shores merchants tired of their compact business district being “chewed up” with the Holidays coming on.

“It looks like we are done with construction on Avenida until January, Whew!,” said Terry Kraszewski, owner of Ocean Girl Surf boutique at 2162 Avenida de la Playa.

“We are hoping for help from Barbara Bry, our new Council rep, when she takes office, and are excited to have a receptive and interested representative as we begin to pursue new projects.”

Kraszewski added Ocean Girl has “lots of new stock for holiday gifting.”

“Yes, fences and barricades were lifted and the orange cones and yellow earth movers have disappeared,” exclaimed Isabelle (Izzy) Tihanyi, CEO/co-owner of Surf Diva Inc., women's surf school and boutique at 2160 Avenida de la Playa.

“The Shores beach businesses are open and ready for local holiday shopping.”

Tihanyi implored shoppers to “avoid the malls and support your

local and family owned boutiques and shops.” She said Surf Diva will be featuring steep discounts on surfboards, gift items and free gift wrapping, “so you have time to hit the beach while our adorable elves handle packing up your gifts.”

A limited-edition gift card collection in celebration of Surf Diva's 20th anniversary was released recently with artwork inspired and approved by the Surf Divas themselves. Izzy and twin sister Coco will also be honored this year as Sports Marshals at the La Jolla Christmas Parade.

“It's very meaningful to us and all of our staff that the La Jolla community recognizes our efforts towards sharing the sport and spirit of surfing for all," Izzy said.

Though Shores businesses were negatively impacted by storm drain construction, only a couple have left.

Which is encouraging, said Preisendorfer, who stressed her greatest fear is “our image.”

“It's the mind set,” she said. “We want people to know there are places to park and it's beautiful here.

Our beach gets three million visitors a year, and we want them to be happy to buy a T-shirt and a hamburger.”

Preisendorfer said the Shores Association is looking forward to working with Council member Bry to create “our own banner district having some signage.”

Though a small district, Shores businesses number about 150, Preisendorfer said.

The Ten Best Dressed Awards was a Black Tie Gala held in Balboa Park on Nov. 17. This is the ninth annual year for this red carpet event, which was presented by Leonard Simpson and The San Diego Civic Youth Ballet. Chairs included Darlene Davies and La Jollans Don Breitenberg, Jeanne Jones, Kristi Pieper, Phyllis Parrish, John Parrish and Cristull Hasson.

Honorary chair was Ruth Mulvaney for lifetime in philanthropy.

The theme for this theatrical awards show was “En Pointe At The Prado.” The evening began with cocktails and a silent auction, then moved to the Prado Ballroom for a formal dinner with cuisine by published author Jeanne Jones.

A fabulous live auction was held, which included two tickets to the Emmy’s. The San Diego Civic Youth Ballet entertained the audience as they dined. The event was co-hosted by celebrities Kelly Emberg, Lisa Stahl Sullivan and Sonya Berg.

After the incredible dinner, guests were shuttled over to Casa del Prado for the phenomenal theatrical show by Leonard Simpson’s Fashion Forward.

Simpson is known for his extraordinary productions and this theatrical production was no exception. Ballet from the San Diego Civic Youth Ballet

was intertwined in the show.

Performances began on the stage and then the models sashayed down the center isle of the theater to show off the designer’s creations. Some of the standouts were the Kimono inspiration by costume designer Sueko Oshimoto, futuristic designs by Veteran Couture, elegant gowns by Lisseth Corrao, and show-stopping designs by Puey Quinones.

The evening ended with the awards ceremony presented by Brittany Noelle of Fashion LemonAid. Many of the honorees were from La Jolla: Lorna York, Cristull Hasson, Dottie Stanley, Dr. Scott Miller, Edward Mracek and David Stanley.

Additional best-dressed awards for women went to Arlene Esgate, Kathryn Vaughn, Esq., Ofelia Alksne, Darlene Davies, Charo GarciaGuerra, Angela Krasner, Randi Hosking, Ellen Kardashian, Maureen King and Lisa Stahl Sullivan.

When the La Jolla Playhouse was founded in 1946 by Gregory Peck, Dorothy Macguire, and Mel Ferrer, La Valencia continued her natural progression – playing host to some of the most gifted minds of the Greatest Generation. Anyone on the lam from the suits in Hollywood sought solace at La Valencia, with Peck arguably acting as the master of ceremonies. It was also quite common to see the likes of Mary Pickford, David Niven, Ginger Rodgers, Lorne Green, Charlton Heston, and other LJP cast members newly arrived in the village.

Chicago-born La Jolla transplant and master of the “hard-boiled” detective novel, Raymond Chandler, could also be found haunting the bar – sipping a scotch, or four. Chandler would eventually utilize the hotel as back-

After the war, in 1950, La Valencia purchased the nearby Hotel Cabrillo, increasing the room count from 30 to 100. Further additions included a sky-room cocktail lounge, with a commanding view of La Jolla Park, the Cove, north shore, and snowcapped mountains to the east. During this time, La Jolla had expanded to 11,000 residents (a welcomed thought nowadays).

Another draw of La Valencia, the pool, was built during this time, along with a gym, sauna, putting green and shuffleboard court. Also, the lobby was updated on the seventh floor, with the three lower floors designated as “six, five, and four,” respective-

ly. With these extensive upgrades, La Valencia became a “hotel known throughout the world.” One guest extolled: “Even the poorest room had a view that would satisfy anyone.”

A local jewel During its 90 years of operation, La Valencia has taken several monikers. It has been referred to as Marblehead, The Gloucester, the Newport of the Pacific, and the Capri of America. While all of these affectionally-dubbed surnames depict the elegance and grace of a bygone era, the hotel ultimately has embraced the new millennium.

In 2013, The Whaling Bar hung up their highballs for good. Replaced

by The Med, a mediterranean-style bistro, their culinary and aesthetic touches remain classic, yet modern.

It has been said that “remember when” is the lowest form of conversation. In La Valencia’s case, however, this embodies the tight-knit community of La Jolla, which has almost spanned a century and remained a fixture of this bejeweled area of the country.

Though flat-screen televisions and trendy décor grace the wonderfully constructed gem, with the right breeze one can reminisce about the personalities that proceeded them.

From my garden: Living holiday ornaments

By LINDA MARRONE Since I have Tillandsias (air plants) and Spanish moss growing and continually multiplying in my garden, I decided to use them to make hanging terrarium-style Christmas ornaments this year.

These living ornaments make great holiday gifts and look equally beautiful hanging from a Christmas tree, outdoors on tree branches or in a window.

What you need to begin your project are glass ornaments that are specially made for displaying items and plants, such as small Tillandsias and succulents. There are many different sizes and shapes you can find online that are suitable to use for these hanging terrarium ornaments. Then use moss and decorative items to complement the plants, choosing colors, shapes and textures to suit a particular style or décor.

Here's what you will need: 1 4.5- 6-inch glass hanging plant terrariums;

2 Moss (reindeer, Spanish, or green); 3 Stones and or seashells; 4 Curling willow branches; 5 Ribbon, twine or raffia for hanging; 6 Tillandsias, or succulent plants.

Tillandsias come in a multitude of shapes and colors and most will produce colorful flowers. They need more water than succulent plants, so before you create your ornament, soak the Tillandsias in water to cover for about half and hour and then shake them gently and dry on a paper towel. Make sure the plants are dry to the touch before you insert them in the ornament. When the holiday season is over, you can move your plants out of the glass ornaments and place them outdoors in your garden or keep them in their terrarium.

If you choose to keep your Tillandsias in the ornaments after the holiday, make sure they get watered at least once a week. The Tillandsias I have growing on tree limbs and tree trunks in my garden get sprayed

down with a hose at least once a week, or more when we have hot dry Santa Ana weather. If you keep your air plants in the terrarium, you will need to remove them and soak or spray them with water before placing them back in the ornament. If your air plant is flowering, try to keep the flower dry so that it will last longer. Typically, a Tillandsia flower will last about 3 weeks.

Even though they grow without soil, Tillandsias need nutrients and I spray mine about once or every other month with a fertilizer called "Epiphyte's Delight" that I use half strength and mix in a spray bottle.

Any water soluble fertilizer without urea will also work.

For a terrarium-style ornament using succulents, you need to make sure the roots of the plant have a medium to grow in, such as small gravel or sand. Occasionally, a few drops of water from an eyedropper will help the succulents stay watered after their planting medium dries Seaglass Ornament.

Wheat and Water: Brick-oven pizza, craft beer locale opens in Bird Rock

By BLAKE BUNCH There is little that can prove more satisfying to a surfer post-session than a great slice and high-quality brew. What is one to do when options near their favorite break are limited, however? As a result of this dilemma, La Jolla native Ted Cochrane has been hard at work over the past three years to open the highly necessary and anticipated Wheat and Water in Bird Rock.

The location has historically been the home to a number of pizzerias and other Italian offshoots. Formerly JJ’s Pizza, Bird Rock Pizza, and Bellaroma’s, it was only natural for Cochrane to secure this location for Wheat and Water.

Despite some red tape regarding commercial zoning laws, as well as an extensive overhaul on the building itself, Cochrane remains optimistic regarding his first foray as a restauranteur.

“The past few years have taken a great deal of hard work and perseverance on our end,” says Cochrane, who, along with business partner, Doug Ritz have done an impressive job on the exterior and interior structural changes.

They stripped out all of the tile flooring and sheetrock, which unearthed fittingly exposed red brick facades. In a stroke of luck, they discovered that they already possessed a look that most trendy spots pay top dollar to emulate. One issue they did encounter, however, was that the

former restaurant building (at the time of its inception around the late ’50s/early ’60s) was zoned for commercial use. After a good deal of back-and-forth to update their permits, and a “bottom up” transformation regarding the installation of brand new safety and kitchen equipment, Wheat and Water was up and running this past October.

“It took some time, but now we’re

dialing into what I’ve always wanted,” says Cochrane. “We aim to please all the wants of San Diego – craft beers and cocktails, wood-fired pizza, charcuterie, and other amazing menu items. Also, we want to present an environment that is both family-friendly as well as a place for the business professionals to knock back a few after work. Our staff is amazing in both the front and back

of the house, which is crucial to our success.”

Wheat and Water’s craft beer selection reflects the demands of a generation, with local and state breweries like Modern Times, Bear Republic and Coronado Brewing represented on the draught list. They also maintain a relatively extensive and moderately priced list of quality wines, as well. In keeping with

trends, classic and innovative craft cocktails are ever-present on the menu as well.

Though their proverbial bread and butter lies within their woodfired pies, this is what allows them the cost margin to produce artisan cheese and meat plates, gourmet salads, pates, and much more. Their oven, acquired from Forno Bravo, ensures a classic style of pizza without duplication. Pizzas are divided into “specialty” or traditional “red sauce” categories, and can range anywhere from $15 to $20 for a generously portioned personal pizza.

In less than one month of operation, Wheat and Water has already secured an active role in the community, hosting a Bird Rock Community Council happy hour on Nov. 21. Both Ritz and Cochrane are their on a daily schedule, and provided free sampler pies to the famished civic group.

While surely their aim is to expand their business exponentially, both Ritz and Cochrane understand the importance in small businesses and community leaders working hand-inhand. As young entrepreneurs, they have found an untapped resource in the Bird Rock community.

A lesson in the cappuccino served at La Clochette Du Coin café ByJENNY WERTH La Clochette Du Coin might have been plucked from the streets of Paris and transported right onto La Jolla Boulevard. The French name of the cafe, La Clochette Du Coin translates into ‘the little bell on the corner’ and with indoor and outdoor seating and a cozy interior, La Clochette Du Coin rings a bell everyone wants to hear. The cafe is inviting with its beamed ceiling and wooden flooring and has a friendly staff. Recently, a friend and I ordered cappuccinos, one wet with lots of coffee and one dry with less, to see how it stacked up with other coffee houses in La Jolla. As you know, there are a bunch of them and all serve pretty good coffee. We were not disappointed. Our cappuccinos came with a foamy layer of cream on top, complete with a barista signature decoration in the cream and a piece of chocolate on the saucer.

One sip told us they were perfect, as were the rolls we ordered with them.

The food here is just as tasty as the various coffee drinks. Do try the desserts!

In case you don’t know, cappucci-

‘Our cappuccinos came with a foamy layer of cream on top, complete with a barista signature in the cream.’ no, first surfaced as kapuziner in 18th century Austria. It was a coffee drink mixed with sugar, egg yolks and cream that became popular in World War I in cafés in Northern Italy that belonged to Austria at that time. Of course, the blend of ingredients, as well as the process each barista uses can vary from country to country and that may account, in part, for the different names. To get from kapuziner to cappuccino, we have to go back a bit. Cappuccino comes from the Latin word, caputium, which means hood.

When an order of monks showed up in robes with hoods, they were called Capuchin friars as a kind of nickname. Their robes were a distinctive reddish-brown in color and for some reason, lost in translation, the reddish-brown coffee drink became

known as “cappuccinos” in Italy. It very well may be that coffee lovers are lucky they’re not ordering, “a hoodie and a croissant.”

In perhaps an odd twist along the path from kapuziners to cappuccinos, the Capuchin friars colored their robes as they did to be different from the Franciscans, Benedictines

and Augustinians. The Franciscans’ robes were a lighter brown and perhaps not so oddly, another coffee at the time was called Franziskaner.

Cappuccinos or kapuziners, as you like, were initially prepared using the traditional Ottoman process of boiling coffee and water together. Sometimes sugar was

added. The British began filtering and steeping coffee. France and continental Europe decided the Brits had a good idea and began using it in their brewing process. The Irish added a “wee dram” to their coffee and called it “Irish coffee.” Somewhat related, in the U.S., the foam layer of milk on top of the coffee was called the “monk’s head.”

The high pressure and hot steam used by early espresso machines made them somewhat dangerous for home use. Over the years improvements were made and now espresso machines are safe enough for home use and can brew up cappuccinos, espressos or regular coffee with the push of a button. And while it is convenient to have cappuccinos at home, having a cup at a charming coffee house such as La Clochette Du Coin is always a treat.

University City updates: Tree lighting Dec. 9, Little League signups open

By JEMMA SAMALA Light Up the Neighborhood: Since 2002, University City lights up the neighborhood at the Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony, and this year it will be on Friday, Dec. 9, 6:30 p.m. at Standley Park Recreation Center, located on Governor Drive. Festivities start with a spaghetti dinner hosted

by Standley Rec at 5:30 p.m. With a price of $5 for adults, $3 for ages six to twelve, and free for children under five years old—a great bargain during the holidays.

Entertainment will be provided by the Standley Middle School Band, and Spreckels Elementary students. Local Fire Rescue Squad 56 will be in attendance and will be collecting new, unwrapped toys for the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation’s holiday campaign. There will also be hot cocoa, cookies, crafts and of course…a visit

by Santa. To recognize the Hanukkah celebrations, Menorah candles will be lit, a new tradition started last year.

Regents Road Bridge: Bridge or no bridge? Whether or not to build a bridge over Rose Canyon to connect the north and south ends of Regents Road has been a divisive community issue for decades. Issues including environmental protection of Rose Canyon, diversion of traffic from Genesee Avenue, property value concerns, emergency access, and overall change in neighborhood feel have been debated on both sides.

The City of San Diego Council members will be deciding on whether to keep the Regents Road Bridge Project in the community plan on Monday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. The estimated cost of the bridge project is $69 million. At the same meeting, the City Council members will also vote on the widening of Genesee to six lanes, from Nobel to the 52 Freeway (est. cost $48 million), and an alternative plan that includes both the extension to six lanes and a grade separation at Genesee and Governor Drive (est. cost - $60 million).

Girl Scouts Transform UC: Completing a community service project, UC’s Girl Scout Troop 4109 helped beautify the UC roads by painting a transformer box on Governor Drive at Agee Street. The beautification project is sponsored by UCCA and funded through a grant from the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. The UCCA has received permission from SDG&E to paint more commercial transformer boxes.

Community artists can submit design ideas to the Beautification Committee, and are asked to contact Merle Langston at mberman@san.rr.com or Barbara Gellman at bgellman@yahoo.com. The Beautification Committee will provide the paint and supplies, along with a small stipend. Thanks again to UC Girl Scout Troop 4109 for their service.

Kathy Niess decided to post a plea on Nextdoor.com for donations towards the San Diego Rescue Mission Children’s Center, she had no idea that there was an avalanche of support coming her way. The idea came to her after a friend who works at the Children’s Center mentioned that the center was in a crisis mode with an overwhelming number of needy and homeless children.

Five days later, among the items donated included: 1,176 diapers, 17 packages of wipes, 77 jackets, 74 pairs of underwear, 131 pairs of socks, plus 4 large grocery bags of shoes. Niess and friend Julie Gish spent over six hours sorting the donations. One good thought brought out the best of neighbors. Little League Spring Season Sign-ups: Registration is now open for the spring 2017 University City Little League (UCLL) season. UCLL will be accepting registrations for TBall through Juniors divisions. Registration fees range from $80 (T-Ball) to $130 (Minors, Intermediate, Juniors).

Cost for the Challenger division is $50. Players are encouraged to register by Dec. 21, as afterwards a $20 late fee will be charged.

Theater updates: ‘Hedwig’ in San Diego

By CHARLENE BALDRIDGE Playing at the Civic Theatre through Dec. 4 under the auspices of Broadway San Diego, the touring production of the 2014 Tony Award-winning rock musical, “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” is touted as way ahead of its time, and indeed it was when produced at New York City’s Jane Street Theater in 1998.

Written by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask, “Hedwig” was named top musical of 1998 by Time magazine.

Hedwig (Euan Morton) was rendered transsexual by a botched operation, leaving the child, who became a rock singer, to grow up very angry with only an inch of his male member intact. Having emigrated to the U.S. Hedwig meets up and falls in love with Yitzhak (Hannah Corneau), who becomes a huge rock star due to Hedwig’s stylistic influence. Now, Hedwig is intent on setting the record straight. ”Hedwig” was produced and directed locally by Cygnet Theatre’s Sean Murray in 2003, at their for-

mer Rolando Theatre. It starred Jeremiah Lorenz, the brother of Jon Lorenz, who wrote the score for San Diego Musical Theatre’s world premiere production of “Miracle on 34th Street: A Live Musical Radio Play,” which is seen through Dec. 23 at the Horton Grand Theatre.
