Shooting victim sues La Jolla Crossroads

BY BLAKE BUNCH The April 30 mass shooting at the La Jolla Crossroads apartment complex, carried out by 49-year-old Peter Selis, left 35-year-old mother of three, Monique Clark, dead and wounded several others before Selis was shot and killed by SDPD officers.

One of the victims of the senseless act, Charnee James, was shot in both legs and suffered considerable nerve damage as a result of Selis’ actions. James has now filed suit against La Jolla Crossroads, which claims that Selis’ brother-in-law, the principal and manager of the

Two men to stand trial in robberies, theft cases

On Friday, Oct. 27 at Tioga Hall, UC San Diego saw its 43rd annual ‘Pumpkin Drop.’ This year’s pumpkin weighed about 420 pounds, making it one of the largest pumpkins in Muir College’s Pumpkin Drop history, which is fitting, as the college is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Each year, students name the sacrificial squash and this fall it was dubbed: ‘I’m dropping hints that I’m 50 and single!’ Inside the pumpkin was an assortment of individually wrapped candy, which students scurried to claim.

Two men were ordered Thursday to stand trial for allegedly robbing five tourists vacationing from Arizona in Pacific Beach.

Additionally, Ephraim Jacob Byers, 21, is accused of holding up a woman on a La Jolla street on May 12. Byers was also held to answer for grand theft in the loss of an employee’s IPhone in Pacific Beach.

Both Byers and Kyle James Holland, 20, were identified by most of the witnesses in a preliminary hearing conducted by San Diego Superior Court Judge Charles Rogers.

City attorney to limit spending abilities, role of recreation councils

San Diego YMCA sued for chlorine spill

In September, the La Jolla Village News reported that $67,935.86 was missing from the La Jolla Parks and Recreation Committee. Cindy Greatrex, who was president of that nonprofit group between May 2016 and February 2017, resigned and was eventually arrested as a result of the missing funds. She also had publicly promised to repay the money in a series of released emails.

Greatrex posted $70,000 bail on a charge of 487(B)(3) PC, defined in the California Penal Code as grand theft, which includes circumstances, "Where the money, labor, or real or personal property is taken by a servant, agent, or employee from his or her principal or employer and aggregates $950 or more in any 12 consecutive month period."

Her preliminary hearing on Sept.

15 was further delayed until Nov. 14.

This alleged misappropriation of funds may show a direct correlation as to how the city has long done business with recreation councils.

The inception of Council Policy 700-42, adopted in 1981, “controls recreation councils’ collection and expenditure of funds paid by the public and gives recreation councils certain administrative responsibilities at the city’s recreation centers.”

The YMCA of San Diego County was fined $17,000 on Oct. 20 and ordered to abide by numerous probation conditions for a chlorine spill that sickened 79 elementary students and eight adults in 2015.

The YMCA, as a non-profit corporation, pleaded guilty to four felony counts and one misdemeanor that involved a hazardous waste spill, which occurred two years ago in Santee that also went into a storm drain.

The Board of Directors for the county-wide YMCA hired former District Attorney Paul Pfingst, who represented them Friday. Approximately seven directors and employees were in the audience when San Diego Superior Court Judge Polly Shamoon placed the YMCA on two years probation.

The terms of probation affect all YMCA facilities in the county. The judge ordered all YMCA facilities to allow unannounced inspections by the county Department of Environmental Health and to improve its procedures for handling hazardous materials.

Pfingst filed documents noting the YMCA has since paid $705,053 in facility improvements such as new chemical pumps, chemical monitoring systems, berms surrounding chemical storage areas, and remodeling pump room doors. READ MORE ONLINE AT sdnews.com

essentially created individual recreation councils, over time, the city delegated the majority of administrative functions to these councils (including the collection of funds from participants and park patrons).

Several similar instances of embezzlement, often with little repercussion after perceived apology, have occurred during this time period, City Attorney Mara Elliott is now leading the charge to rid San

Diego of these recreation councils.

According to Voice of San Diego, “The city’s recreation centers began the year with nearly $4.5 million in their accounts, but it’s hardly split evenly from one community to the next. Carmel Valley’s group began the year with more than $400,000 in its account, while Stockton had

“The YMCA is changing its entire culture and organization to try to respond to provide better aquatic safety inside the pool,” said Pfingst to the judge.

“These people,” said Pfingst, gesturing to the audience, “have worked tirelessly to put these changes in effect.”

Also sentenced to three years probation was Lee Joseph Ladley, 64, the YMCA facilities director who now is the YMCA director for one facility in Spring Valley.

Ladley was fined $6,150, and given credit for one day in jail for a previous booking when he and the YMCA were first charged on Oct. 19, 2016 by the City of San Diego District Attorney’s office.

On Oct. 20, 2015, a tube which carried chlorine from a storage tank to a swimming pool broke and came into contact with another acidic chemical. Chlorine gas fumes in a plume drifted to the nearby Rio Seco Elementary School in Santee.

Students sensed a bleach-like smell and 79 students and eight adults were treated for nausea, burning eyes and skin, and shortness of breath in the parking lot of a hospital.

Pfingst informed the judge the YMCA has already paid $11,482 in medical costs for the victims, and $37,416 in two other agencies’

Kellogg inducted into Southern California Tennis Association Hall of Fame

BY DAVE SCHWAB William J. Kellogg of the high-profile family that has owned and operated the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club since 1927, was recently inducted into the Southern California Tennis Association Hall of Fame.

A long-time tennis player, Kellogg is the fourth-generation member to serve as president of the Kelloggfamily properties, which include the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, The La Jolla Shores Hotel, The Marine Room Restaurant, The Shores Restaurant, the Playa del Oro Apartments, and the F.W. Kellogg commercial building in La Jolla Shores.

Kellogg's induction ceremony was held Oct. 1 at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach. His induction class included two of tennis’ greatest players of all-time, Rod Laver and Bobby Riggs, as well as Herb Flam, Helen Perez, Debbie Graham, Bob William ‘Bill’ Kellogg receives his Southern California Tennis Association award.

apartment complex, ‘did not do enough’ to protect the public from Selis.

Following the shooting, Selis’ family members took to social media to express their condolences.

"Words cannot express our profound grief and sorrow for all the victims and their families," the gunman's sister, Eve Selis, posted on her Facebook page as a statement. "On behalf of our family, we are so sorry that this happened.

"Our family feels the unbearable pain caused by Pete's senseless acts.

We cannot understand what would have caused Pete to do this,” Selis continued.

Initial motive, though relatively unclear, was determined by San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman merely a day after the shooting occurred.

"Selis and his girlfriend recently broke up, and family and friends of the suspect said that he was distraught and depressed about the breakup,” said Zimmerman at an

were held up in two incidents in Pacific Beach in which their cell phones and other items were taken.

Rogers ordered the men to stand trial on a single count of making a criminal threat to one victim. He dismissed two counts of making a criminal threat to other victims.

The La Jolla victim said the robber pulled a gun on her and did not call police until she was safely at home

April 31 press conference. “Selis is a La Jolla Crossroads resident. He called his ex-girlfriend and told her that he 'had shot two people' and continued firing until police arrived at the scene. We believe that he wanted his ex-girlfriend to listen to him carry out his rampage.

"We believe that there is zero information to indicate that race played a factor in this terrible and horrific crime. He simply targeted his victims because they just happened to be there. While two victims are still in critical condition, they are stable and are expected to survive.

Selis has no criminal history, and though distraught, his friends and family could not have predicted his behavior."

This is what James’ lawsuit alleges against La Jolla Crossroads – that Selis’ family did in fact know that he was a danger to himself and others.

In spite of the countless warning signs, he was allowed to live rent free in the upscale residential community, continuing a downward spiral of drugs, alcohol, debt and accruing firearms.

Selis’ aforementioned brother-inlaw, Stuart Posnack, is chief executive of Garden Communities, which

is a parent company of La Jolla Crossroads, LLC. The shooter was also known to be heavily indebted. According to reports, Selis filed Chapter 13 bankruptcy in 2015 as a joint debtor with his former spouse, Patricia Martinez. The filing listed assets of $14,100 and liabilities of $108,028. He had also previously filed for bankruptcy in 2009.

The shooter apparently had a history with substance abuse issues as well.

"He had divorced from his wife and had recently, prior to the shooting, been deserted by his girlfriend," the lawsuit alleges. "He was deeply in debt and unemployed. At least one collection company had claimed that he had engaged in criminal activity in converting money to his own use. He was an alcohol and drug abuser. He also was a possessor of weapons."

The suit also said an unnamed security guard company in charge of watching over the property was negligent in failing to prevent the shooting and for failing to protect victims once the shooting started.

Lisa Garris testified she and her husband were robbed at 2 a.m. July 24 after they left a Pacific Beach bar while they were vacationing here from Arizona.

“Two guys jumped out of the darkness with a knife,” said Garris.

“Give us all your (expletive), your purse,” Garris quoted one robber as saying.

Detective Stephanie Audette testified she interviewed Holland after his July 24 arrest and he told her he “was acting as a lookout.” She said

Holland admitted Byers gave him some money for helping him in the hold-ups.

The police detective also testified Holland kept one of the cellphones that was taken from an Arizona tourist.

Courtland Nead, a manager at California Accessories on Garnet Street, testified his I-Phone 6S+ was stolen by one man after two other men distracted him in the store in March.

Nead testified the three men came in together and it was believed Byers

“That is exactly right,” replied Kellogg.

William Kellogg has been a tennis pro, taught the sport and visited some of the sports most storied locales.

“I played a couple of pro tournaments,” he said. “I served as a linesman and umpire at Wimbledon.”

unplugged his phone that was charging at the time and took it. It was valued at $800. The three men then left together.

The charge for the theft was changed at the hearing from robbery to grand theft since the phone was taken while the victim was not in personal possession of it at the time.

Holland’s attorney argued her client was in the background in most of the incidents and was 30 feet away from the three women who were held up by Byers.

Deputy District Attorney Lucille Yturralde argued both men “acted together” in the robberies.

Rogers ordered both men to next appear in court on Nov. 6 when a trial date will be set. They have both pleaded not guilty.

Bail for Byers is set at $500,000 as he has a previous case and is accused of using a gun in one robbery, said Yturralde. Holland’s bail is $150,000 and both remain in jail.

Byers was also arrested July 24 by San Diego Police.

He has served as a member of the USTA board of directors, on the ITF’s Seniors Committee, on the USTA Nominating Committee and was named a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame’s International Advisory Board. He has also served as president of several organizations including the San Diego District Tennis Association, Youth Tennis San Diego and the

just $51.” Also, “In 2012, the city auditor’s office confirmed that $100,998 had gone missing from a recreation council.”

So what role, if any, would these recreation councils play if the city attorney has her way?

A document released by the city attorney’s office on Sept. 8 stated, “The Park and Recreation Department, which is responsible for the recreation councils under Council Policy 700-42, has asked this office whether the funds collected by recreation councils are ‘city funds,’ subject to applicable provisions in the San Diego Charter and San Diego Municipal Code. This memo memorializes our previous advice.

We believe that these funds are city funds...”

In the city attorney’s recommendation conclusion, her office found

Reflecting back on his distinguished tennis career, Kellogg commented, “It's been a wild ride. I've done a little bit of everything.”

Kellogg said he and his father used to play in father-son tournaments hosted at their club.

“I love the parent-child divisions,” he said. “But I had no sons, so I had to play father-daughter tennis with my daughter, Tiffany. That's been a lot of fun.”

Originally opened in 1927 as the La Jolla Beach & Yacht Club, Frederick William Kellogg (known as F.W. Kellogg) purchased the property in 1935 envisioning an oceanfront

that “Based on the source of funds collected by recreation councils and the city’s delegation of recreational activities in city parks, the fee schedule, and the permit, we conclude that recreation council funds are city funds, subject to charted and municipal code provisions applicable to city funds.”

In short, the city wants to reclaim its own money. Recreation councils would then petition on a necessitydriven basis.

Following the release of the document, Elliott’s office issued the following statement on Oct. 31 regarding her recommendations as to the role of recreation councils: “What the city council understands, but the public may not, is that recreation councils currently control these funds without city oversight. There are no checks and balances in place to ensure public dollars are spent fairly, appropriately and in compliance with state and local laws. The city has numerous

protections in place to ensure proper use of public funds, such as competitive bidding processes, Equal Opportunity Contracting requirements, prevailing wage law, and conflict of interest policies.

“Today (Oct. 31), council is being asked to take actions that will give back to the city control of recreation council funds. The actions will also restrict the use of funds for recreation programs so that they can only be spent in the communities where the funds were generated. If the council adopts these actions, the recreation councils will continue in their advisory role as established by Council Policy 700-42.”

Elliott further elaborated that the only change is that the recreational councils will no longer take physical possession of the funds, which are paid by users of recreation programs. No longer will money be in their private accounts, but a designated city fund.

Veterans Day ceremony at Mt. Soledad to honor Jacqueline Cochran On Saturday, Nov. 11, the Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial will honor famed aviator Jacqueline Cochran. The event, which begins at 2 p.m., will feature keynote speaker Bonnie J. Dunbar, NASA astronaut, professor of aerospace engineering at Texas A&M, and former president and CEO of the Museum of Flight.

Dunbar is a native of Sunnyside, Wash. She received her bachelor of science and master of science degrees in ceramic engineering from the University of Washington in 1971 and 1975, and a doctorate in mechanical/biomedical engineering from the University of Houston in 1983. Dunbar accepted a position as a payload officer/flight controller at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in 1978 and served as a guidance and navigation officer/flight controller for the Skylab reentry mission in 1979.

She will also be present to commemorate famed Air Force aviation Cochran. Invocation will be conducted by Rev. Bear Ride, sister of Sally Ride who was the youngest

resort that would attract out-oftown visitors, as well as La Jollans.

Kellogg broadened the Club’s appeal, building four tennis courts and a swimming pool, and promptly renamed the resort the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

Kellogg never lived to see the opening of the Marine Room. He died in 1940. The responsibility for managing the club fell to his son William Scripps (W.S.) Kellogg, who was the driving force behind the resort’s success as a tennis and vacation destination. William Scripps oversaw extensive changes, including the expansion of the Beach Club Apartments in 1948, the addition of the North Wing in 1957, and construction of Playa Del Oro Apart-

ments and the F.W. Kellogg commercial building. Other work included the completion of the Marine Room restaurant, construction of a nine-hole par-3 golf course, and extensive landscaping at the main entrance.

In 1973, W.S. Kellogg retired after 34 years, and his son, William Crowe Kellogg assumed management. Under his leadership, two more tennis courts were added and an extensive renovation of the facility was started. Today, operation of the cub, Marine Room restaurant and the neighboring La Jolla Shores Hotel and Shores restaurant is in the hands of fourth-generation family member William (Bill) J. Kellogg.

David Sedaris, master of dark humor, to perform at ArtPower

Del Mar gears up for Bing Crosby Season, Breeders’ Cup With Del Mar closing its 78th summer season, the racetrack is looking ahead to its annual fall meet. The track’s second season, known as the ‘Bing Crosby Season,’ kicked off on Wednesday, Nov. 1, followed by one of Thoroughbred racing’s most prestigious international events, the 2017 Breeders’ Cup World Championships on Nov. 3 and 4.

The racetrack’s fall season, now heading into its fourth year, is all about bringing back the old-school cool of the era and style of the track’s founder and entertainment icon Bing Crosby. With its deep-rooted history in Thoroughbred racing and high-status as the go-to spot for the rich and famous, the iconic racetrack is the perfect host for this year’s 34th running of the Breeders’ Cup. The event will make history when it debuts “where the turf meets the surf ” and with it brings top horses and trainers from around the world to race at the seaside oval.

Bing was a music man, of course, so no doubt he’d have a problem appreciating the two concerts the track will present: the return of its popular Reggae Fest featuring Iration on Saturday, Nov. 18, and the rock band The Offspring on Saturday, Nov. 25.

Rolling back to the track, Del Mar will present more food-focused fun with its annual Fall Food Truck Festival on Saturday, Nov. 11, where more than 20 food trucks will serve up a variety of SoCal’s tastiest, eclectic eats in the seaside concert area.

Rotary Club of La Jolla to host ‘Laughing Under the Stars’ on Nov. 4 Excitement is already building for the Rotary Club of La Jolla’s second “Laughing Under the Stars” Comedy Gala. The evening will be held Nov. 4 at the La Jolla Farms home of club member Claire Riess.

“Laughing Under the Stars” was conceived by past president Ken King as a way to build an endowment for Rotary’s many community and international services projects.

Last year’s sold out event raised more than $70,000. The club expects that the “buzz” from its success will result in another sell out this year. Club member and La Valencia general manager Mark DiBello will provide catering for this year’s celebration, which will be

chaired by Russell King.

Rotary is an international service organization comprised of professionals dedicated to making a difference in both their communities and developing countries. The organization currently has more than 31,000 clubs located in over 200 countries.

Our La Jolla club’s hands-on service projects included building playgrounds for San Diego Salvation Army’s Door of Hope and the town of Jeremy, Haiti, furnishing “My First Homes” for former foster youth, building three homes in Tijuana, providing a sailing experience for underserved local youth, and awarding nearly $180,000 in

renewable college scholarships.

Shake Shack opening sees long lines, classic food in Westfield UTC

BY BLAKE BUNCH On Friday, Oct. 20 Shake Shack opened their doors in Westfield UTC Shopping Center. Possibly one of the highest-anticipated openings of the expansion project this year, one thing was made obvious rather quickly – people really seem to love this place. This was exemplified through a line of prospective diners that ran all the way from the register, out the thoroughfare and all the way to the exits of the mall.

“What the public has seen the past couple of days,” said Aaron Tunney, general manager of Shake Shack at Westfield UTC. “I’ve heard it from many people, ‘you guys are so busy right now’ and, honestly, that’s the easy part. The hardest part has been finding 70 people to man the store in such a short time frame.”

Shake Shack is a nationwide burger chain with a “roadside” burger stand feel that has developed a cult-worthy following. Initially starting out as a hot dog cart in Madison Square Park in New York City in 2004, the business spread rapidly from the East Coast. As the name would insist, Shake Shack’s specialties include burgers, hot dogs, milkshakes and frozen custard. Not to be stopped there, however, Shake Shack also serves beer and wine as well.

The Susan G. Komen 3-Day is a 60-mile walk for women and men who are ready to end breast cancer forever. Participants raise a minimum of $2,300 and walk an average of 20 miles a day for three consecutive days, educating tens of thousands of people about breast

On Oct. 24, the Westgate Hotel presented the latest fashion collection of Dame Zandra Rhodes in their one-of-a-kind luxury boutique hotel.

It was a perfect location for this upscale event. What is more fitting for a fashion show direct from London with the famous Zandra Rhodes combined in the awesome setting of the Westgate Hotel? Zandra Rhodes is an international fashion designer who is known for her incredible textile designs done in brilliant and vibrant colors. These designs are

hand-printed on silk chiffon to create an amazing look.

The guests arrived to sip on champagne and socialize before moving to the Versailles Ballroom for the three-course luncheon. The scrumptious menu was created by international food consultant and cookbook author, Jeanne Jones. The fashion show began with the special collection called Vintage Vibe with Lipstick Collection. In this first segment, models were wearing gowns, jumpsuits, and blouses. This collection was made with black silk-chiffon and is resurrected from the 1967 archives.

One of the crowd pleasers was the Field of Lilies gown, originally from her 1973 collection. This cobaltblue silk-chiffon has a v-neck and kimono sleeves, and it is a must have

for your wardrobe. The Sunray gown was a shimmering metallic lame dress with a handkerchief hemline. This reinvented dress from 1977 came in gold or lavender-pink and was a huge hit with the audience. Another favorite was the Knitted Circle dress from 1969. It is a one-shoulder silhouette with tiered ruffles. The jewelry was by Zandra Rhodes and Andrew Logan.

After the fashion show everyone in the audience could come behind the scenes and try on these timeless garments. Each one of these designs is a one-of–a-kind that you will keep in your wardrobe for life. They are a living work of art.

“I like to think that my work is rather like the most wonderful Beatles songs, they stay there with you forever,” said Rhodes.

Most recently, Rhodes was made a Dame in the Queen’s latest Honours List. In 2016, she collaborated with Valentino’s creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli, for their SS17 collection. In addition, Rhodes launched her “Archive Collection” on matchesfashion.com. There, they have recreated her most iconic designs and made them available for everyone.

La Jolla news and community briefs ‘Natural High’ gala America is facing an opioid epidemic and it is not going away without a fight. Today, nearly two million Americans live with opioid abuse or dependence; an estimated 46 Americans die each day from prescription opioid overdoses alone.

Opioids have become more readily available and drug and alcohol usage is more prevalent than in years past, impacting today’s youth the greatest.

On Saturday, Nov. 4, San Diegobased Natural High works directly with educators, celebrity ambassadors and parents to inspire and empower our youth to find their natural high and develop the skills and courage to say no to drugs.

Natural High, a nonprofit organization, uses science-based programs to inspire today’s youth to tap into their natural high and learn lifesaving principles. Natural High has inspired more than eight million teens and currently reaches more than 28,000 educators across the nation.

MTS to improve transit choices The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) continues its efforts to improve transit choices for the San Diego region with the grand opening of the state-of-theart 80,000-square-foot UTC Transit Center on Friday, Oct. 27. The agency will operate 11 bus routes out of the facility that service thousands of passengers daily in the heart of San Diego’s second largest business sector – University City.

The UTC Transit Center is part of the $500 million Westfield UTC mall renovation that will connect to the Mid-Coast Trolley extension platform via a sky bridge when completed in 2021. The $13.7 million transit facility was built as a public/private partnership with the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) and Westfield UTC and the City of San Diego.

Since June 2014, MTS, in partnership with SANDAG, has exponentially improved San Diego’s largest transit system – giving more and better choices than ever before to transit riders. Other capital investments include: · $2 million boost in bus service as part of the Transit Optimization Plan that will add to the agency’s high frequency network and streamline routes to reduce travel times; · $660 million complete overhaul and renewal of the Orange Line and

UC San Diego Blue Line infrastructure; · Launched a new network of high frequency, limited stop bus service called Rapid · Modernized the UC San Diego Blue Line to allow low-floor Trolley cars to speed up boarding and improve on-time performance on the network’s busiest line · $38 million to build the East County Bus Operations & Maintenance Facility · $50.9 million to build the South Bay Operations & Maintenance Facility; and · $21 million to modernize bus stations on the Broadway corridor in downtown San Diego that provide a premier level of comfort, security and convenience for transit riders.

The latest investment, the UTC Transit Center, will serve bus routes that have grown significantly in recent years due to increased demand from UC San Diego’s growing community.

The new 80,000-square-foottransit center will be off-street, have a bus-only entrance/exit, and avoid all the pedestrian and private auto flow from the mall. It will also include a new controlled bus-only intersection at the southwestern corner of the transit center on Genesee Avenue. From my garden: Brilliant liquid amber trees say it’s fall in San Diego

BY LINDA MARRONE Along the coastal regions, we don't see a lot of deciduous trees with leaves that change color in the fall, but one standout is the Liquid Amber (Liquidambar styracifula) that does well in our temperate climate. During the fall I enjoy driving along certain streets to see the Liquid Amber trees that grow nearby and the sight of these trees cloaked in their fall colors reminds me that Thanksgiving is near, even when it was 90 degrees outside.

Also known as the American sweetgum, once established, the Liquid Amber will grow 2 to 3 feet per year and can reach heights of 30 to 70 feet. Their maple-like leaves turn to amber hues in the fall and some varieties can have thorny seed pods, but newer hybrids can be purchased that do not produce them. As with all deciduous trees, the Liquid Amber will drop its leaves in the fall and during winter months you can enjoy the bare architecture of its trunk and branches. In the spring, tender green leaves appear and by summer the tree will provide muchneeded shade during the warmer months.

Deciduous trees that drop their leaves in the fall are not that popular due to their upkeep. But the fallen leaves actually protect the trees roots, are good for the soil as they breakdown, so it is not always necessary to clear them away. Last year, we lost a very old peach tree and I miss the way it decorated the garden with its fallen golden leaves in the fall. The shredded leaves also made great mulch.

Other trees that will bring fall color to the landscape and do well in are; Ginkgo bilobo (maidenhair), which has leaves that turn golden in the fall. Lagerstromia (crape myrtle) is covered with pink red or purple flowers from summer to fall and yellow, orange or red leaves in fall, depending on the variety you choose. Pistacia chinensis(Chinese pistache) leaves will turn red, orange, or yellow. All of these trees are available at local nurseries that specialize in trees, and if you are considering planting a large tree (these can all grow 30-60 feet high), plant it away from your foundation and consult with the nursery about the environment you plan to plant them in. All of these trees, including the Liquid Amber are considered water-wise trees.

BY MATHILDE ROUSSEAU BJERREGAARD Located in the Village, new propietorDorothy Bello purchased the flower shop in August this year. The previous owner had owned the shop for 30 years.

“My grandparents and my mom used to own a flower shop and doing business with Italy and so I decided to follow my family’s experience in flowers,” said Bello.

Bello was a registered dental hygienist for more than 15 years specializing in Periodontal treatment, but she wasn’t able to practice any longer and therefore she decided to follow in her family’s footsteps and become a florist.

“Flowers always make people feel better, happier and they are medicine to the soul.” said Bello.

Bello wanted her flower shop to be located in La Jolla because this area has a special meaning to her and her family. Her family loves La Jolla and they have a lot of beautiful memories together from here.

“At La Jolla Florist we are not just filling a vase with flowers but making creative arrangements with an unusual twist”, said the new owner of La Jolla Florist.

Bello’s dream about the shop is to pass the shop to the next generation and keeping this way the family legacy on making people happy and feeling special.

BY MATHILDE ROUSSEAU BJERREGAARD In October 2019, San Diego is going to host the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) World Beach Games. The World Beach Games is a beach multi-sports event organized by the Association of National Olympic Committees.

“The ANOC World Beach Games is an exciting opportunity to get beach sports featured on a global state,” said Vincent E. Mudd, who is the Board Chairman at the ANOC World Beach Games and the

founder of The San Diego Exploratory Foundation (SDEF).

ANOC World Beach Games will be featuring 15 sports with 17 disciplines. It will be a mixture of sports traditionally played on sand like beach volleyball and beach football, and others which take place on the water, such as dragon boat racing, surfing, yacht-racing, wakeboarding and surfing. Also, there will be skateboarding and sport climbing.

ANOC represents 206 National Olympic committees and each committee is able to sent athletes to the game, but the athletes has to be qualified by the International Sports

Federation and they have to be the top athletes in those sports.

The World Beach Games is primarily going to take place in Mission Beach and especially in South Mission Beach. San Diego has been chosen to host the event because it is at the epicenter of beach, surf and extreme sports culture.

“San Diego has the most authentic beach culture to host these games and San Diego is a worldwide tourist destination that the entire world knows and wants to visit,” said Mudd.

Sexual harassment: It’s not about sex, it is more about power Doing it Better

who was wearing a tight, short skirt and crossing her legs, showing quite a bit of flesh; she was obviously available (or so it seemed). I told the women to pick one of the men, sit by him and talk him first into a date with the hope of getting him into bed. For this purpose, I told the women to rub their necks, stroke their thighs and talk about how turned on they were.

The harassment took 10 minutes; a distraught Sheriff Kolander ran up to me saying he did not know what to do. “That’s the point,” I said. “I am not your Jewish mother; get back there.”

The discussion that took place after everyone got back to their seats was exactly what I had hoped for.

The men felt de-powered; if they refused to comply, they would most likely lose their jobs, yet they did not want to submit.

The realization that this was not really about sex, but about power hit the men in their gut. The feelings of helplessness gave them a new understanding of the dynamics of harassment. We learn best when

strong feelings are engaged, not with our heads where denial and rationalization can take place. What I did not expect was the women’s reaction: they did not realize how much fun it would be to see the men feel discombobulated.

The American Management Association hired me to do the same workshop at various venues—all with the same results. Although these workshops dealt with obvious sexual behaviors, there are subtle cues that are more difficult to deal with.

For instance, take touch initiation: a professor can pat a student on the back to congratulate her on a wellwritten paper, but a student cannot pat a professor. The same holds true for a doctor and a patient: the doctor can put his arm around a patient to give comfort, but a patient cannot reciprocate with the doctor. And finally, a boss can show his appreciation with a touch on a secretary’s shoulder, but she cannot do the same to her boss. It is an issue only if there is a power differential. All of these gestures may by innocuous,

but could be interpreted as inappropriate.

There is both intent and perception: the intent may be friendly or suggestive; the perception may also be either. The two don’t necessarily match, depending on previous experiences and one’s perception of similar situations.

Some people are paranoid, while others are gullible. The paranoid people may be missing out on warm overtures; meanwhile the gullible people may be taken advantage of.

A realistic balance is feasible between the two considering current efforts at transparency and accountability in the work place and elsewhere. What can be meant as friendly can also be felt as patronizing by a susceptible person. Some people seem to be on the lookout for evil intent, while others like to give others the benefit of the doubt.

When unsure of the meaning of gestures, wait for a follow-up. Both good and bad will continue and become obvious.

Being explicit about feeling uncomfortable in any given situa-

tion early in the game should prevent escalation. At the risk of being seen as overly sensitive and seeing harm where none is intended—even if ridiculed—most of us have a good sense of what is really going on and should act on our intuition. If our questioning angers the perpetrator, it is a sure indication that all was not meant in gest.

Hopefully we are living in a time of transition from accepting old norms of that’s how it is to current realities of let’s develop new honest dialogues between the sexes. The people responsible for making this happen I call the four p’s: the policy makers, the perpetrators, the plaintiffs and, in equal measure, the passive participants (those who see and yet do nothing). We all benefit by raising awareness and becoming clear on our own intentions.

I worked there for three years, leading workshops, training staff, creating videos, and writing manuals. The following is an account of a workshop on Sex and Power: The participants included the city manager, the chief of police, the fire chief, the sheriff, department heads and staff. I divided the room into men on one side and women on the other, having an equal number of each.

The men were told that they were a 20-something, single mother glad to have this job in hard economic times. The women were told that they were a mid-level manager whohad hired this attractive secretary

Dom Haley, the starting center on the Bishop’s offensive line, resembles this: “We have a lot of playmakers on both sides of the ball, and players who are willing to do the dirty work.” Haley, who also plays defensive tackle, is describing what makes this year’s Knights unique. With his selflessness as one of the team’s lesser lights on a squad with many bright lights--no shame there--the 6-foot-tall junior could be describing himself, especially the latter part.

Coach Joel Allen’s 2017 edition, featuring a high-scoring offense behind quarterback Jeffrey Jackson and receivers Mozes Mooney and Jacob Jackson, Jeffrey’s brother, outscored its first seven opponents this season, 411-71. This, despite graduating several key seniors off last year’s CIF Division 3 championship team that went 14-1. Haley, playing both ways, helps anchor both lines.

“Even though I’m a junior, not named a captain,” says the 220pounder, up from 165 pounds as a freshman due to the weight room and tasty chocolate protein shakes three times a day, “I feel I’m a leader on offense and defense. That consists of helping set the tone early in

the game. I also think my role as a leader is not just for this year, but for all years, to mentor the younger players on what Bishop’s football is.”

Haley, personable and well-spoken, talks about the mentoring that alumni Sahil Sheth and Justin Woodley, the latter a close friend, provided for him as an underclassman. “They did it by showing me how to be successful on and off the field: watching film, learning how to read a defense. Also, giving me tips academics-wise: what classes to select, how to use my time well, living so far away (in the South Bay and having to commute).”

Says the history buff of his friendship with Woodley, a star football and basketball player who graduated last year, “We both lived down south. He drove me home after practice everyday last year. I’m hoping maybe to join him at Columbia,” where Woodley was named “Rookie of the Week” for the Lions in midOctober after victimizing Penn with two interceptions. “He’s one of my really close friends.”

A day at the races: Firsthand account of Opening Day

BY PAIGE FULFER Walking through the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club gates, it somewhat felt like the Disneyland of horse racing. I had been to opening day before, but never during Bing Crosby season. There was a different feel in the air this time sophistication, poise, and elegance filled the plaza. Maybe it was the sea of extravagant feather headpieces, top hats, pearl necklaces and polka dot skirts. Either way, I was excited to get inside.

Making my way to the paddock, and to my astonishment, I was followed in by a few horses. Perfect timing. Snapping photos of the horses parading in circles around me, I took full advantage of my all-access pass as I stood on the grass. I hadn’t been this close to a horse since I was 5, and I was immediately brought back to the joys of my childhood. I looked out at the crowd watching the horses from behind the fence, and smiled as I saw couples, families, and friends dressed to the nines! Their cheerful, hopeful demeanor made the day reminiscent of Christmas

morning-Del Mar had officially kicked off Breeders’ Cup week, and the city was ecstatic to host.

I turned my attention back to the horses, started assessing each one, feeling out which (if any) I was going to bet on. After getting saddled up, the horses calmly awaited their jockeys. Nerves and tension filled the paddock as the racers made their way into the arena. The spectators became almost silent, as many tried to eavesdrop on the words exchanged between the jockeys, trainers, and owners huddled on the grass. After the handshakes and pep talks, the announcer exclaimed “riders up!” and the trainers helped the jockeys upon their horses. They made a loop in the paddock, and headed off to the track.

Since I had 10 minutes to spare before the first race, I headed over to the Hollywood Fashion Contest.

The registration table was full of entrants dressed in lavish furs, widebrimmed hats, black lace gloves, and high heels. The contestants were the perfect mix of vintage Hollywood, glamorous flair, and charismatic

Opening Day loyalists. I spoke with a couple running for “Best Dressed Couple.” The Mrs. was decked out in white fur, a black and gold floorlength sequin gown, red heels and matching red gloves, topped with a black-and-gold sequin hat over her adorable pinned-up hairdo.

Her counterpart was suited in a long black coat, a red, black, and gold color scheme, and of course, matching red gloves and a colorcoordinated feathered hat. They both accessorized even further with stick horses. Precious!

I wandered to the track, and stood back as I watched the first race take off. The adrenaline rush apparently made me hungry and gutsy. After snagging a hot dog from concessions, I decided to place a bet on the third race, I bet on Wild Lando, and won a whopping 20 cents when he placed second. Cheers to a great day of winning at Opening Day!
