YMCA makes a splash with the grand opening of its acquatic center By JENNY WERTH “Y-M-C-A! It’s fun to stay at the YM-C-A...” Yes, The Village People’s song can again blare from the cars pulling into the parking lot of the new spruced-up YMCA on Cliffridge Avenue. The song still rings true, especially now that the Y has turned itself into La Jolla’s premier aquatic center. The state-of-the-art facility now features an eight-lane lap pool with cool water next to the activity pool with warm water. The lap pool even has a rock climbing wall sprouting out of it, although this is made of plastic and features plastic colorful “rocks” to climb. And when you’ve had enough, there’s a brand new spa and plenty of room to lounge around and relax. But for the kids, perhaps the coolest thing of all is the outdoor splash pad with a colorful array of water-spraying fountains dotted throughout the area. A major favorite at the grand opening celebration was the “wave,” which has water flowing over it forming the forever perfect wave. Also of great interest was the banana tree that periodically pours out water to the joy of squealing kids. Aw, the fruits of the jungle are creating great joy at the Y’s splashy kid’s area of pure

entertainment. “This is so neat... yea, the banana’s come around and you don’t know when it’s (water) going to fall on you,” explained Amber Strandson. Asked if the unpredictable water falling down was a bit scary she answered, “No! It’s fun,

it’s like a game” and scurried back under the tree. Quite a few notable supporters and staff of the Y were there for the Ann Woolley Aquatic Center grand opening including Marion Ho. “The Y can accommodate many more members doing different things at
the same time such as swimming in the colder pool and doing water aerobics or taking swimming lessons in the warmer pool. Also, children just love the splash playground and the adults enjoy the big jacuzzi. The whole area is very inviting which is a huge difference from the old pool,”
said Ho, who has been a Y member for more than 43 years, shared. She also said she owes her good health to the Y and that “it’s a very friendly and welcoming place.. feels like a family away from home.” The celebration also brought out musicians, The Jackstraws, and began with a heart-felt speech from La Jolla YMCA board advisory chair, Annie So. She said she is thrilled with the new pool facility. It also featured a speech from La Jolla YMCA donor and long-time friend of the Y, Buzz Woolley. Toward the end of the celebration guests were treated to a song by the Y’s pre-K swimming class. Suited up in their bathing gear and blue YMCA swimming caps, the audience was thrilled to watch the kids create a darling singing introduction to what promises to be many years of swimming-fun. The closing remarks and ribbon cutting ceremony were certainly the icing on the swimming-cake. Yes, there was an actual cake; it was prone to melting, but was there nonetheless. The Y staff was all-smiles as they helped answer questions and watch the children splash around. “We’re very excited and thankful. Peter Max’s original cover design is decades-in-the-making for SDCNG publisher Julie Main By JENNY WERTH One day a box appeared in our publisher’s, Julie Main, home in Bovill, Idaho full of secret prizes often found in garage sales. Her father had noticed something that sparked his interest in this box, so he paid a couple bucks and hoped that something between its cardboard walls would become the treasure seen in someone else’s trash. But it did far more than that. Not only did the random box contain treasures but it also began a lifetime appreciation of Peter Max’s art for Julie. What Julie’s father didn’t know was that box contained around 50 large posters of Peter Max’s “The Different Drummer” artwork of the ’60s. A 9-year-old Julie was entranced and took the large-sized posters straight to her bedroom where she used them as wall paper. And so the endearing affair began. “There was a stack of the “The Different Drummer" posters, they were like 17 by 22 inches in size and there must have been at least 50 (I put) on my wall and closet... and so I became very familiar with Max because of that experience,” Julie remembered. “I wanted the posters. I was (attracted to) the bold colors. It was the dynamic ’70s. And his art was mod and cool, very groovy. He was the big forthcoming artist in the ’70s with all these dynamic colors, straight lines and clean art.” Fast-forward to 1982, and an older

Julie finds herself sitting in a car at the Tijuana border crossing while heading home to San Diego. But there was a reward for her first border crossing experience: The large “Welcome to the USA” sign that greeted everyone into the country was done by Max. For Julie, it made the border wait well worth it. “(When I saw the sign) I thought how cool, I know Peter Max, and I’ve loved him for years just because of the poster incident.” That welcome sign is long gone now, much to the dismay of the border crossers who surely enjoyed being greeted by a bold work of art from an innovative and unique artist. Max has his art up on the walls of many galleries across the country and

Max has an outline of art for kid’s to color in as they see fit and allow their imaginations to run wild for that’s where children best excel. And as Julie knows, where they just may start their own relationship with Max’s art itself, or perhaps with the art world in general. “The coloring contest is fun

because it gives art appreciation to other kids ... maybe it will inspire them to go to galleries at some point,”Julie said. So when Max’s team contacted Julie about his upcoming trip to La Jolla, she told them her story. They told Max Julie’s story, and he in turn decided to create an original artwork that was befitting of Julie for the cover page at Julie’s suggestion, “Life’s a Beach”. The result is this epic original art piece that depicts Julie gazing at the ocean and a groovy character in
the sky reminiscent of the ’60s poster; perfect for a girl from the ’70s who began her dance with being cool when she plastered up Max’s posters on her walls. “It reminds us just how small this planet really is and it’s kind of endearing to this... he’s still groovy and I like to think I am too,” she said. La Jolla Parks and Beaches discusses new reservoir plans, DecoBikes By DAVE SCHWAB Several residents expressed displeasure at the city's construction plans for a new reservoir in La Jolla Heights, fearing it will disrupt access into and out of the area at La Jolla Parks and Beaches Inc.'s September meeting. Chair Dan Allen also circulated a return letter from the city to the advisory group answering his previous request that the city consider a “land swap” involving two parcels – a .9-acre parcel known as Exchange Place Reservoir, and an acre-size parcel west of Country
Club Drive known as Muirlands Pump Station – to create new dedicated open park space. “The Park and Recreation Department cannot support acquisition of this parcel,” said City Park and Rec director Herman D. Parker in his letter. “The parcel is surrounded by homes, lacks connectivity to the existing open space at La Jolla Heights and has varied topography … factors making this site unsuitable for open space purposes.” Parker added that the other property in question, Muirlands Pump Station, is “dedicated parkland that may not be transferred to the Public

demolish and remove the existing 990,000-gallon La Jolla Exchange Place Reservoir, located near the corner of Country Club Drive and Pepita Way. This partially above ground reservoir has been out of service since 2002. The reservoir site will be backfilled and landscaped. The reservoir's pump station and pressure-reducing station will continue in operation, supporting the local water distribution system. “Applying for building permits is where we're at right now,” said Fordan, adding, “final design is scheduled for summer 2017 with construction starting in fall 2017 or winter 2018 with completion planned in summer 2020.” A couple of residents, including La Jolla resident and former San Diego
A swarm of nearly 200 small earthquakes that shook Southern California residents in the Salton Sea area last week raised concerns they might trigger a larger earthquake on the southern San Andreas Fault. At the same time, scientists from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego and the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of
Nevada, Reno published their recent discovery of a potentially significant fault that lies along the eastern edge of the Salton Sea. The presence of the newly mapped Salton Trough Fault, which runs parallel to the San Andreas Fault, could impact current seismic hazard models in the earthquakeprone region that includes the greater Los Angeles area.

In other action: • Allen said DecoBikes, with its proposed bikeshare stations it plans to extend into into La Jolla, will be on the group's October agenda. The proposal has met with a great deal of opposition, particularly to DecoBike's proposed bike station use as commercial advertising space. • Allen also announced that a planned jazz concert in December has been postponed. The project will demolish and replace the existing 720,000-gallon La Jolla View Reservoir, an above-ground water storage tank in La Jolla Natural Park. In its place will be a new 3.1 million gallon underground reservoir that will be located at a higher elevation within the park. The project will also restore the site back to its original topography and condition and install 3,000 feet of 30-inch pipeline to connect the new reservoir to the City's water distribution system. The National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded study appears in the October 2016 issue of the journal Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America. “To aid in accurately assessing seismic hazard and reducing risk in a tectonically active region, it is crucial to correctly identify and locate faults before earthquakes happen,” said Valerie Sahakian, a Scripps alumna, and lead author of the study. The research team used a suite of instruments, including multi-channel seismic data, ocean-bottom seismometers, and light detection and ranging, or lidar, to precisely map the deformation within the various sediment layers in and around the sea’s bottom. They imaged the newly identified strike-slip fault within the Salton Sea, just west of the San Andreas Fault. “The location of the fault in the eastern Salton Sea has made imaging it difficult and there is no associated small seismic events, which is why the fault was not detected earlier,” said Scripps geologist Neal Driscoll, the lead principal investigator of the NSF-funded project, and coauthor of the study. “We employed marine seismic equipment to define the deformation patterns beneath the sea that constrained the location of the fault.” Recent studies have revealed that the region has experienced magnitude-7 earthquakes roughly every 175 to 200 years for the last thousand years. Running for La Jolla Country Day By ED PIPER Jr. Lexi Watkins, a cross country runner and member of the La Jolla Country Day School track team, has that refreshing unassuming nature of being caught off guard when someone pays her a compliment. “I was surprised that anyone would want to interview me,” says the 16-year-old junior when asked her reaction to Athletic Director Jeff Hutzler’s arranging the media contact. She confides that as a child, “I was really shy. I used to hide behind my parents.” Plus having an achievement-oriented older brother, Ryan, who enters UC Santa Cruz as a freshman this fall, could contribute to the safety in staying quiet. You’re the youngest in your family, and everyone is more mature and capable in many areas. But that didn’t stop Lexi’s assertions to her brother, who was also a runner at LJCDS, “I’ll beat all your records.” She has done so in the mile, holding a personal best of 5:15. “His was 5:23 or so. In the 5:20’s.” But she says it good-naturedly. The holder of a 3.5 grade point average, she smiles and is accommodating. She is organized, emailing the reporter the morning of the interview that lunch break for the interview Lexi Watkins starts at 11:45 on a special schedule, instead of the usual 12:10. Some teens--and adults, for that matter--wouldn’t have informed their guest of the change in time. A recent event that was meaningful to the young distance runner was attending Brenda Martinez’s camp in Big Bear over Labor Day Weekend. “She’s a runner. She hosts a camp and gives back to the community,” relates Watkins. “I wrote an essay about what running means to me. Running is more than running (to me). The people you meet. The friends I’ve made in running are better friends than I’ve made anywhere else.” From the first time she tried soccer as a 5-year-old, she liked it because of the running aspect. “It’s kind of odd, but I liked (that part of it). Then in middle school (while attending Twin Peaks in Poway), I played the club stuff. I think it’s because I run fast.” She was told by coaches, “You can’t teach running,” so her ability in that area gave her an advantage. “You can teach kicking the ball.” Because of her speed, she thought that she would be a sprinter in track. But her brother went into cross country, and she followed him when

she entered Country Day two years after him. She has run cross country and track during her three years at the private school. As opposites complement each other, Watkins became close friends with Danielle Franger, a classmate who is a cheerleader. In contrast to the quieter Watkins, Franger is outgoing and has had an impact on her friend. “I became friends with her the year after her health incident,” says Watkins of Franger, who was profiled in these pages a year ago. A lot of the ideas I wrote about in my essay on the running camp came from her. Like resilience. Especially in races. When I go up a hill. Danielle will persevere. I can, too.” The two gravitated toward each other as Franger, missing school, had to repeat her sophomore classes and the two were in the same grade, though a year apart in age. Franger has helped her to come out of her more reserved nature. “Why change? To get myself out there more. It’s gotten better. It’s a part of being more mature.” But she confides: “It’s not like it’s easy now.” In an achievement of self-motivation, Watkins taught herself to play piano. “I can’t read sheet music. But I know the fingerings.” To teach herself the song “Come On, Eileen,” which she calls an “oldie,” Lexi thought, “I like that song and I think it’d be fun to learn to play it.” “You can look it up on Youtube and see people playing it,” she says. In school, she likes English class due to the writing, and AP Biology. “I think biology is really cool,” she professes. “It’s how everything works. Down to the atoms.” She expresses real enthusiasm with her expression and tone. As far as a career after college, she isn’t sure. “I’m so stuck between English and science. I think of math and science being together, and English (on the other side).” Her brother Ryan leaves for Santa Cruz in three days. “I still don’t know how to feel,” the younger sister says. She and the reporter share stories of being younger siblings and finally getting the house to themselves when the older ones go away to college.

La Jolla ironwoman overcomes adversityback competing for Ironman championships By DAVE SCHWAB Kathleen McCartney, a 58-yearold multiple Ironman world champion, is passionate about her orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Neville Alleyne, whom she credits with “giving her her life back.” Both La Jollans, they met when a ruptured herniated disc caused elite athlete McCartney debilitating pain, threatening to derail her dream of completing another Ironman. The Ironman long-distance competition held annually in Hawaii involves a 2.4 mile (3.9 km) swim, a bike ride of 112 miles (180 km), and a marathon run of 26.219 miles (42.195 km). Not a competitive athlete at all growing up, McCartney was hooked witnessing her first Hawaii Ironman competition in 1981. “Right then and there I wanted to be a participant, I wanted to become an Ironman,” McCartney said getting her wish — and then some — the following year. “Just finishing the race was an accomplishment,” McCartney said noting her surprise at winning the event on her first try. “I realized then that I had the mental toughness and passion for the sport, and had some natural talent and endurance,” she said. “It was just something that I loved.” But then came a major setback. “I injured my back in 2007 and it was so debilitating, that I thought I would never be able to run — or do another marathon or triathlon,”

McCartney said. “But I had a very successful surgery on two herniated discs with Alleyne of Tri-City Medical Center, and, along with the help of his (workout) program and advice, I was able to train for and complete more Ironmen.” "In Kathleen’s case, her recovery and ultimate return to competition was due in large part to an intense core strengthening program,” said Alleyne. “Although she was already in good shape and an elite athlete, this core training was more intense and deeper than any regime she had done previously. I collaborated with the physical therapist to create the program. It helped that Kathleen
was a highly motivated patient." "Her treatment, which began as conservative treatment for chronic pain, ultimately resulted in surgery,” Alleyne continued. “To aid in her recovery, we focused on core strengthening. This is not necessarily unusual or different than what most trained orthopedic surgeons would do. However, I have a tendency to be a little more hands-on and involved in the recovery, and work closely with the physical therapists on the program and with the patient." Discussing her training regimen, McCartney said the biggest challenge always is finding ways to squeeze training into a busy schedule. When she first started competing in Ironman competitions, she was a student working two jobs. “Now I work out at lunch, and again after work and on the weekends,” she said. “It takes a lot of discipline — and great scheduling. I am cycling about 150 miles a week and running about 25 miles a week while swimming about three miles a week, as well as doing core strengthening and yoga.” This year, on Oct. 8, McCartney will participate in her 10th Ironman World Championship in Hawaii. She will also be the Ironman Legends guest speaker at the 2016 Ironman Sports Medicine Conference. “I can't get enough it,” said McCartney of Ironman and triathlon competitions concluding, “I intend to continue doing triathlons throughout my life.”

LJHS grad Jillian Beed creates chic clothing with Rue Stiic By JENNY WERTH Jillian Beed’s fashion line Rue Stiic only broke into the U.S. market about a year ago, but she’s already making a fashionably notable impact. Popular fashion lines such as Free People and Planet Blue already began placing orders for her “chic” designs. And her fashions dazzle in chic boutiques in L.A., Paris, Bali, Australia and here at Lola on Girard. The La Jolla High School alumna is only 28-years-old, but she has an old soul with a penchant for wanderlust. “Fashion for me is how people create their style and represent themselves to society,” Beed explained. “When I design things I think chic; it’s classic, timeless and when I’m designing things I think of how things would look on someone.” The self-proclaimed workaholic describes herself as ‘ocean-minded’ and drawn to creating a coastal lifestyle brand that is both chic and comfortable. The graduate of LMU had always dreamt of having a lifestyle brand and it didn’t take long. The beginning of her design inspirations came while she was still living in Venice Beach and would stroll through what-was-the-then less-developed street of Abbot Kinney. She particularly found a creative muse in the back streets and

creative alleyways. “I liked the architecture mixed with the new and old designs. How old and new meet vintage and come together.” It was within the eccentric borders of Venice Beach, rich with bohemian influences and a cool-vibe that her brand idea was born. After moving to Australia (her father’s home country) where she often visited while growing up, she started her brand with only six Tshirts that were all one size. “It was an over-sized, cool T-shirt and they were sold on consignment in Perth and kept selling out.” And that’s when Rue Stiic was founded. The brand soon blossomed into a clothing factory in Bali where the Rue Stiic garments are all produced. “We have to keep up with fast fashion. People always want to see new (fashion designs). Everything is ethically produced. We are like a little Balinese family over there,” she shared. Now the brand includes women’s lifestyle apparel, swim wear and travel wear such as chic and functional bags that double as backpacks that can even fit your laptop. La Jolla Symphony La Jolla Symphony artistic director and renowned UCSD professor, Stephen Schick, received an ecstatic notice in San Francisco Classical Voice Sept. 27 for his performance in the Paul Dresher Ensemble’s production of “Schick Machine,” which was described, like many things Schick, as “unclassifiable and unforgettable.” Many of the instruments were “invented,” and after the show there was an instrument petting zoo. In addition to Dresher, brilliant Bay Area writer/director Rinde Eckert was also involved. His name might be remembered for UCSD’s presentation of his stunning solo opera, “Ravenshead,” and for his appearance in Gina Leishman’s wonderful, also indefinable piece, “Burning Dreams” at San Diego Rep. Schick spoke Sept. 18 at the Downtown San Diego Public Library in San Diego Opera’s “Opera Talk Live,” which concerned the SDO production of David C. Schick, who will conduct, called the opera “a mirror rather than a message.” Composer Little developed the libretto from interviews with veterans of five wars. Sewailam sang in and directed SDO’s recent Opera America-funded Opera on Track production of “Cinderella.” Bennett described the scene when the Opera on Track ensemble presented Rossini’s opera at the Santee Trolley Station last month. About 200 people turned up, among them many preschoolers and each was thrilled to receive either a tiara or a handlebar mustache. The adults received vouchers for discounted tickets to “Cinderella” (kids are halfprice) and trolley rides to the Civic Theatre.

Stars shine bright in La Jolla for San Diego International Film Festival Variety’s “Night of the Stars” Tribute at the Museum of Contemporary Art rolled out the red carpet for some of Hollywood’s stars as Bening accepted the Gregory Peck Award of Excellence in Cinema last week. Annette Bening, 58, and Warren Beatty, 79, were the last couple to arrive on the red carpet to throngs of excited fans and media outlets. The couple who have been married for 25 years bring out a jittery energy among the crowds. Indeed, this is a Hollywood power couple who have both been bestowed with so many awards for their multiple contributions to the arts that it’s difficult to keep count. And this is also a couple who have four children and make family their first priority. They were all smiles as they encountered the crowd and Bening said she was thrilled to be back in San Diego where she lived for many years, attended school and still has many friends and family. When asked how it felt to receive the award she said, “Amazing, I’ve never experienced this feeling. I have some of my dearest and oldest friends here.” She was clearly appreciative of the contributions
people have made in her life, and she even had her former drama teacher in the audience whom she acknowledged with great reverence during her speech. Her parents who have been married for 66 years and still live in the same house in San Diego were also there to watch their daughter accept the award. “I’m going to sleep in the same room I had when I was 10-years-old,” Bening told the audience. Beatty was incredibly proud of his wife. When asked what made her such a great actress, he explained, “I don’t know what makes it happen, but she is, in my opinion, the greatest. And I’m not joking.” He also said that his wife was a very good cook. In fact, he said, “she’s good at everything.” Gregory Peck’s children, Anthony and Cecilia, agreed that Bening was the ideal person to be granted the award in their late-father’s name. Bening’s acceptance speech was lovely, plentiful of personal memories of her time as a student in San Diego and full of fond family moments. And after her acceptance speech, she sat down for a Q & A with the audience. A reception followed with desserts and drinks.

La Jolla Art & Wine Festival this weekend By DAVE SCHWAB A crowning event in the Jewel, the La Jolla Art & Wine Festival will celebrate its eighth anniversary Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 8-9 in the downtown Village. Each year, fine art and wine aficionados fill the quaint streets of La Jolla Village for the prestigious La Jolla Art & Wine Festival, presented by Wells Fargo. More than half a mile of La Jolla transforms into an oasis of creativity as it hosts more than 150 juried artists offering incredible artwork and inspiration on Girard Avenue between Prospect Street and Torrey Pines Road. The two-day, free festival also boasts live entertainment, the finest selection of Baja wines and local San Diego craft beers, the Geppetto’s Family Art Center for the little ones, a gourmet food court and dazzling roving entertainment. Event hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Sherry Ahern, the creator of the Art & Wine Festival local school fundraiser, also created La Jolla's Farmers Market held every Sunday at La Jolla Elementary School. Ahern promised attendees they won't be disappointed. Especially not by the weather, which, she noted, topped 100 degrees last year, but is
expected to be well within the comfort zone this year. “It will be 71 degrees and sunny, and we'll have nearly 200 artists, a wine and beer garden accommodating 1,000 and plenty of products from wineries from north Baja as well as boutique breweries: It's going to knock people's socks off,” Ahern said, adding live street entertainers will be something new for guests. “We have new aerial entertainment with entertainers doing acrobatic flash mobs around the entire event and roving entertainers, as well as having a stilt-walker parade,” Ahern said. “We'll have live music in the beer garden and on the main stage. We'll also have La Jolla's marching band doing flash mobs each day.” If unique is what you seek, La Jolla on Oct. 8-9 is the place to be. “We have put together a lot of experiences to complement each other,” Ahern said noting a gourmet food court will dish out new fangled desserts like taco ice cream. There will also be a silent auction offering up enticing items, from trips to spa resorts to dinner packages at La Jolla restaurants to jewelry, clothes and gift certificates for local hair and spa services. “Whether you're there to buy something for $30 or $10,000, there will be something for everybody of any age,” said Ahern promising, “We

Marine accused of killing UCSD students gets trial date A new trial date of Feb. 14, 2017 was set Sept. 28 for Jason Riley King, who is accused of two counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of two UCSD medical students while allegedly driving drunk in a head-on crash. King, 23,

Fashion Week San Diego made La Jolla look even lovelier Fashion Files

A year-long line up of fashion events sparkled throughout Fashion Week San Diego’s 2016 (FWSD16) four day affair. This designer event commanded attention through Sept. 29 to Oct. 2. The Art & Beauty Behind Fashion at the Shane Bowden Art Gallery started the stunning show on Thursday. Guest’s watched live demos with informal modeling and Sleeping Giant Music provided tunes for the entire event as founder Allison Andrews greeted the deckedout crowd. FWSD16 lit up the runway with 26 designers from around the world at the Hotel La Jolla. An array of memorable designs shimmied down the runway. There was eveningwear, menswear, swimwear, active wear, a T-shirt line and even dog wear. Friday night showcased the first half of the designers as MC’s for the evening, Jodi Kodesh and Jeff Kraph from NBC 7 kept the crowd going. The puppy-proud program began with an Haute Dog Fashion Show; all the adorable dogs shown on the runway were adoptable from the Rancho Coastal Humane Society. And even as the dogs ‘dealt’ with being transported onto a runway named after ‘cats,’ they received a

Sangeeta showed eveningwear inspired by both Indian and Western apparel, and Margaret the Maker showed off her extensive use of textiles with a gorgeous collection. The evening concluded with last year’s winner, B. JASH.I showcasing her NativeAmerican inspired pieces. Saturday night commenced with a Proclamation Presentation from director Chuck Matthews. The runway started out with the Stylish Bisou, designer’s of a dog apparel brand that leaves Fido pawing to be carried around town. Naturally, they received a huge reception from
the audience. Other standouts were the red and black collection from Gloria, the fashion forward designs of y-u-l-i-y-a. and the vivid colors of LK Fashion. A trunk show was held on Sunday at the La Valencia hotel concluding with the presentation of fashion awards. This year, Territa Torres Designs took first place showing a runway collection with sexy silhouettes. Torres showed her first collection last year and was voted third place designer by the FWSD audience but came back again this year to take home top award. RACA Designs took the second place honors. Carlos Ramirez is the designer of RACA Designs and he’s also huge in the salsa community. He’s created designs for the World
Latin Dance Cup, ESPN World Salsa Cup Championship and World Salsa Summit and Global Salsa Championship. Recently he’s been asked to create one-of-a-kind, designer gowns for M Bride. Jaded Marie took third place with their sophisticated designs. Jaded Judith and Leah Davison specialize in evening and bridal gowns. Awards were also given to the top models. First place went to Andre Lorenzo Montan (best male model) and Luz Lopez (best female model). Hannah Marie was awarded second place, while third place went to Amara Carey. Eatery sets its sights on the Grater good By MARTIN JONES WESTLIN "Comfort food" has been part of our lexicon for half a century, and it's a cinch whoever coined the term had a particular fare in mind. Ma's secret-recipe holiday pumpkin pie, a mayo-slathered bologna sandwich and tomato soup on a rainy day, the criminally underrated cottage cheese and ketchup for no good reason: All have a certain value in assuaging anxiety and stoking delight. But if you're so impudent as to think any of these touch the grilledcheese sammie, you're either lying or dead. The grilled-cheese sandwich is to comfort food like France is to the world at large, the globe's undisputed cultural leader in a roily sea of pretenders. If you don't believe us, you now have a Village eatery at which to research the claim – Grater Grilled Cheese, which expanded into La Jolla from Mission Valley.

True, the place is hardly a clone of your childhood home, where a spot of toasted flour and fromage marked those heady days beyond recall – but what venue is? Grater does its level best to transport you there, proudly presenting a tidy collection of variations on the sammie that used to make your day. Grater's success revolves around its five-cheese blend (nobody's saying which cheeses), comprising a basic sandwich on a tortilla or sourdough. From there, you can have an Angus-beef hamburger patty with your blend or a full-fledged vegetarian sandwich with chorizo and refried beans; the Caprese lies a step up, with tomato, pesto aioli and bal-
samic vinegar glaze. The granddaddies are the Puerto Nuevo – lobster, snow crab and chipotle – and the signature Grater Grilled Cheese, featuring goat cheese, arugula, bacon, onions and jalapeños. Spreads and add-ons are in serious supply here, as if you'll really need them – but glutton that I am, I topped off my Grater with olive oil and ham. Never has a sandwich come this close to tasting like the most mouth-watering quiche in the history of the universe, a testament to the eatery's savvy about accessories that make its food what it is. The Grater concept was born of something called the Greengo, the eatery's food truck, which debuted in SanDiego in 2011. Founding personnel were hard-pressed to imagine anybody who'd refuse this traditional favorite, especially when the "restaurant" was right outside the door. Founder Gaston Corbala took it from there, ordering locally and

using organic products – the rest is history, as Corbala reportedly has designs on taking his concepts statewide. The Mission Valley location is at 5618 Mission Center Road; it features an extended menu and serves beer and wine. Both venues offer a kids menu and will customize and deliver
your fare – meaning that everybody can drudge up their grilled-cheesefueled memories from the sanctity of home. But you'll probably want to pay a visit to this lively and eager-to-please eatery – the word "comfort" works both ways, and your lavish praise will bring as much to the all-deserving staff.
Public House serves up world-class burgers and a pint of beer connoisseur-worthy brews By Robert G. Rogers There is a charming Public House at 830 Kline Street in La Jolla in the historic old Geranium cottage over 100 hundred years old. It’s been there for six years. And, another Pub has been opened in Old Town, San Diego to serve the ever growing number of beer and burger lovers. You can sit inside or outside, surrounded by colorful beer signs and friendly faces. Outside seating is the favorite. Families are welcome. The sign says the burgers are “world famous.” I haven’t eaten burgers from every country in the world, but the Public House burgers are at the top of my list of darngood burgers. Dustin Puskar, a young man who can do it all in the Pub, said people love the burgers and beer the Pub offers up. European beers, especially Belgium beers, are very popular but visitors from out of town like to sample the local beers. He said people come to the Pub “for the good food, great beers and a good time. And, they get it all!” Dustin also shared that the Kobe beef burger and the wild game burgers are a favorite of all. The name and the rustic look of the building sent my thoughts backward to the time Pubs began as ale houses in cottages in small villages throughout the British Isles. In those days, the wife of the proprietor of such a cottage regularly brewed ale and when it was ready, she’d put a small green bush on a pole to let everyone know the ale was ready. Villagers could come to the house, drink ale and catch up with everyone’s gossip. Games of darts and

pool as well as entertainment were added over the years and ale houses became the social center of a village and some say the heart of England. Along the way, patrons began calling the ale houses Public Houses which was shortened over time simply to Pub. King Richard II decreed that signs with pictures be added to identify the Pubs. The pictures were an accommodation to villagers who couldn’t read. Nag’s Head, Fox and Hounds and Red Lion were popular names. It wasn’t long until proprietors’ wives began baking left-over meats in a potato crust. The dish became known as a “Shepard’s Pie” and is still a staple on Pub menus. “A pie and a pint” was all the locals had to say to get a glass of ale and a meat pie. One point of interest about “pints.” The British are very partic-
ular about their “pints.” Pubs are mandated to use one-pint glasses that bear a crown stamp certifying to their accuracy. If someone orders a pint of beer, they mean to get a pint! From the early days, a Pub’s menu evolved to include a Ploughman’s lunch of cheese, pickled onions and chutney piled on top of a thick wedge of bread with cold meat, usually something left over as well. As the name suggests, the lunch was also sold to field workers in a tin can. “Pub Grub,” as it is called today, grew out of those simple beginnings. Meat pies, no longer with leftover meat, are still offered as are other traditional dishes such as bangers and mash and pasties; bangers being sausages and mash being potatoes. And beers of all varieties and tastes have been added, many from the tap, many from the
bottle. Over the decades, populations increased and people spread like dandelion seeds blowing in the wind so village Pubs are no longer cozy little gathering places where locals come to catch up on each other’s gossip and news. Gone are the proprietors’ wives who once brewed the ale and put a bush on a pole to let people know it’s time for a social gathering over a pint and a pie and a friendly game of darts afterward. Today, people do their catching up from newspapers, television, radio and the Internet without leaving their homes. But, there is one thing evolution has not changed. It has not diminished the charm of the Pubs. The name alone evokes memories of happy times gone by. And, that is the soul of The Public House on Kline. It captures both the spirit and the charm of the ancient pubs. Instead of the entire village
gathering for gossip and news, each patron with their friends and family are a village unto themselves. They come for a beer and Pub Grub, California style, and to catch up on each other’s news. It may not offer darts or skittles or snooker, but it offers everything else, most notably good food and drink and the opportunity to visit and have a good time. It has a beer list as long as your arm and changes draft beers daily so beer lovers never get jaded. Not only that, it has a special program for beer connoisseurs that features 80 beers in 80 days plus a rare keg night. Their California style Pub Grub, including grub for the family, has to be on everyone’s culinary wish list. From My Garden: amazing agave and its pollinator, the long-nosed bats By LINDA MARRONE Inspired by beautiful photographs Cameron Acker gave me of agave plants growing in La Jolla (he takes photos of my listings), I decided to learn more about them and was surprised to discover how many different varieties there are and what they need to survive. Native to Mexico, South America and the South and Southwestern regions of the United States, there are literally hundreds of different varieties of agaves and they come in different colors, shapes and sizes. Most varieties have sharp thorny points and they have been called the "guard dogs" of the plant world, since trying to maneuver around most varieties can result in an unpleasant encounter with their "teeth" or thorns. Even though many types do have sharp pointed needle-like thorns or a single thorn at the end of each leaf, the agave is a succulent and more closely related to the aloe plant than to cacti. There are also varieties that have rounded leaves with little or no thorn at all. Drought tolerant, they prefer to grow in well-drained, rocky, sandy soils and can be found growing naturally along La Jolla's rocky coastline. The plant has shallow roots, rosette-like or elongated leaves that grow from a center rosette. Most create "pups" around their perimeter, as well as a striking spike of flowers that grows from its center and signals the approaching decline of the plant. Agave americana is one of the
more familiar varieties of agave we find growing in Southern California. With thick 3 to 5 foot graygreen leaves that grow from its center rosette, agave americana is more commonly known as the "Century Plant," however, which actually only lives for about 10 to 30 years. At the end of its life, this agave sends out a spectacular 20 to 30 foot spike that is covered with pale yellow blossoms. Agave americana also comes in smaller varieties and multi-colored variations with stripes along it leaves in white, yellow, or pink. Tequila is made from the heart of Agave tequilana, also known as Agave azul (blue agave). Most blue agave plants grow to about 7 feet in height, but have been known to grow much larger. The plant has long thick, bluish, fleshy leaves that come to a point with a sharp spike at the end. After five years they produce their flower stalk that grows 15 to 20 feet tall and is covered with creamy white flowers. Blue agaves, as well as other agave varieties are used to produce agave nectar or syrup, which is sweeter than honey. If you enjoy tequila, margaritas and the sweetness of agave nectar, it is important to realize that bats, especially the endangered longnosed bat (Leptonycteris cuasoae) are the main pollinators of agave plants. The relationship between the agave plant and the long-nosed bat is so strong that one cannot survive without the other. The use of pesticides and the indiscriminate killing of bat colonies in Mexico are believed to be the cause of the bats

decline. Bats, just like our bees are important pollinators for many other plants, besides agave and they need to be protected. \When I began researching agave, I had no idea about its association to bats and as I prepare my garden for Halloween festivities and hang rubber bats from tree limbs for a scary effect, the reality is that a world without bats would be much scarier.

Once guests moved over to the new pool facilities, a special performance by a group of synchronized lady-swimmers called The Synchronettes offered a show. It was a clever way to introduce the sparkling new lap-pool and helped finalize the celebration. From there, guests enjoyed refreshments or snapped photos of their kids running throughout the splash pad. Remember the mission of the YMCA for it tells the story of an organization that has been around for decades and has been forefront in American society. Their mission reads: “The YMCA of San Diego County is dedicated to improving the quality of human life and to helping all people realize their fullest potential as children of God through the development of the spirt, mind and body.”

LJ art exhibition displays four women’s unique style of painting at LJ Art Association Gallery running now By JENNY WERTH “Renascent” is the one word title for a four women art exhibition at the La Jolla Art Association Gallery running through Oct. 16. The original works of Catherine MacDonald McKechnie, Theresa Early Newbern, Sharon Ford and Aimee Jo are on display to tantalize the eyes. Naturally, each artist has their own unique style of painting. The artist’s release states that “Sharon’s artwork boarders on lyrical abstractions inspired by natural “sky-scapes” and landscapes. Aimee Jo’s art provides an interesting abstraction that teases the viewer to explore their own translation of what they perceive in her paintings. Catherine’s paintings, with interesting shapes, colors and line creates movement and a rhythm like a sympathy on canvas. Theresa’s paintings hold the viewer’s interest with her attention to detail and depiction of reality. This exhibition, built on a strong friendship and passion for art promises to delight the senses and awaken the imagination.” Catherine MacDonald-McKechnie has been attracted to art since she was young. With a Master’s in Fine Art from Pratt Institute, New York, Catherine said she realized she was an artist while in third grade and ever since has been able to express herself through art. “From childhood my love of color in nature, especially the ocean (attracted me to art),” she shared. Indeed, at a young age Catherine visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art and viewed Van Gogh’s work for the first time. “I loved it immedi-

ately, his free strokes and casual style.” When asked what she hopes the pubic views when they see her art she replied, “I want the public to study the work and find their own personal response to the paintings… each time you look at art work, you should discover more to enjoy. Blessing of Animals at Bishop’s School Bishop’s School blessed the animals on World Animal Day and the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi on Oct. 4. All kinds of animals and reptiles awaited their turn to be blessed by Bishop’s Chaplain, the Rev. Brian Fidler. More than 800 attendees came out to the quad as students brought their lizards, dogs, cats, turtles and even fish for the special occasion.
