Late French sculptor and former La Jolla resident Niki Saint de Phalle apparently saw value in the things you and I take for granted – like auto paint, light bulbs, polystyrene foam, garden hoses and the depths of the imagination. She used stuff like that in creating her sculpture “Big Ganesh,” which depicts a rather menacing colossus out for what appears to be a casual snack. Shark “protocol” was the main topic of discussion at La Jolla Shores Association’s September meeting. Discussion was prompted by association chair Nick LeBeouf, a kayak operator, who asked what lifeguard policy is regarding the closing of beaches as the result of a dangerous shark sighting.

A man-eating hammerhead shark was sighted by kayak fisherman Saturday, Aug. 29 a mile or two out to sea in the La Jolla Shores area. The incident prompted lifeguards to close down the beach and evacuate crowds for a number of hours. “When the beaches are closed, that hurts business,” said LeBeouf. SEE SHARKS>> PG. 11
