Community Choice Energy decision awaits state commission findings

On Sept. 7, San Diego-based Climate Action Campaign held a forum on Community Choice Energy (CCE) at the University of California San Diego. This model, which was approved by the state in 2002, could ultimately provide ratepayers

with the option to choose where their power comes from.

CCE has been championed by the CAC and other environmental groups for its emphasis on clean energy and more affordable rates, but Sempra Energy representatives counter that it would be too risky, have little benefit to the environ-

ment and that even an increase in rates is plausible.

When the La Jolla Village News last reported on CCE (often interchanged with ‘Community Choice Aggregation’) on March 10, it was stated that the California Public Utilities Commission’s (CPUC) study was necessary for munici-

palities to proceed.

While little information has been divulged from the study, on Wednesday, Aug. 1, Stephen Roscow, administrative law judge of the CPUC, handed down

Torres pleads guilty to La Jolla robbery, other murder

After 10 hours of deliberations over two days, a jury on Friday convicted a man of burglarizing and robbing a La Jolla man at gunpoint as well as first-degree murder in another incident.

Jose Nunez Torres, 23, was also found guilty of 13 other charges including two counts of evading officers with reckless driving, two auto thefts, and committing some offenses while free on bond in an earlier court case.

The seven-man, five-woman jury also found true special circumstances allegations that the murder of Leticia Arroyo was committed during a robbery, burglary, and while lying in wait.

Deputy District Attorney James Koerber said Torres faces a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole plus 25 years consecutively for personally using a gun in a homicide.

Torres could also face additional years in prison for robbing the La Jolla man and other crimes.

El Cajon Superior Court Judge Evan Kirvin set sentencing for Nov. 9. Torres remains in jail without bail.

The trial was in El Cajon because Arroyo, 34, was killed in her Santee townhome on Oct. 4, 2016. Four baggies of methamphetamine were taken from her home, according to the getaway driver who testified against Torres.

Torres’ attorney, Michael Hawkins, did not mention the La Jolla robbery or some of the other crimes in his closing argument on Sept. 12. He mostly argued against

convicting him of murder, and blamed the getaway driver as the real killer.

Robert Hill was robbed on Oct. 12, 2016 at 7:50 a.m. in his La Jolla home which was a week after Arroyo was shot to death in her home.

Gustavo Ceron, 26, pleaded guilty to committing a home invasion robbery at Hill’s residence, and he testified Sept. 5 in Torres’ trial.

Ceron will also be sentenced Nov. 9 and he faces up to seven years in prison.

Ceron worked at the Hilton Hotel in La Jolla at the time, and testified he met Torres for the first time the night before. He said he smoked meth while Torres drove around La Jolla, looking for residences to burglarize.

Ceron told the jury that Torres picked out Hill’s residence to burglarize because he noticed the windows were open. He said Torres cut the window screen in the kitchen and got inside.

Ceron testified Torres let him in the front door and that Torres pointed a gun at Hill’s head when he heard voices in his home. He said he acted as a translator for Torres in talking with Hill, whom Ceron said was “really scared.”

Ceron was questioned about his plea agreement with prosecutors and acknowledged that a sentence on probation “could happen.”

Torres’ attorney claimed that his client was apparently present when Arroyo was shot, as her blood was later found on his pants. Hawkins told jurors the getaway driver shot her and not Torres.

News La Jolla Village Merchants September meeting: Now hiring, LJAWF and branded bike racks?

In September, La Jolla Village Merchants Association continued its search for a new executive director and supported the upcoming La Jolla Art & Wine Festival, while receiving an update on community efforts to design and build bike racks.

“We are in the midst of a new hire for executive director,” said LJVMA president Alisha Hawrylyszyn Frank. “We’re getting a lot of different applications and resumes.”

Hawrylyszyn Frank said she was hopeful to be able to announce a selection for executive director in October. She added LJVMA is also seeking to sublease its existing office at 7590 Fay Ave., Suite 404, to save costs. “We’re hoping to get a little more than half the rent in a short, three-month sublease,” she said.

Ann Parode Dynes of La Jolla Parks and Beaches, Inc. presented on community bike racks.

“It’s very hard to ask people to park their bikes, if there are no bike racks, corrals or other places to leave a bike,” Parode Dynes said adding, “There is an opportunity for La Jolla to do a better job with bike racks and bike corrals.”

Parode Dynes said the City suggested La Jolla go with a “generic” bike rack.

“We went, how about an arched bike rack with La Jolla and a cutout of a bicycle on it?”

The parks group chair pointed out there are other communities around town with branded bike racks. She added five of the new arched, branded La Jolla bike racks are going in at Children’s Pool with other sites, like La Jolla Post Office on Wall Street, being considered for bike racks.

“We could promote a program to improve and brand the bike racks,” Parode Dynes said. “It’s a step in the right direction of cleaning up La Jolla.”

Sherry Ahern presented on the upcoming Oct. 6-7 La Jolla Art & Wine Festival in the Village noting the event will be improved this year.

“This is our 10th year and we’ve given about $1 million to local elementary and middle schools,” Ahern said adding three youth bands, as well as La Jolla High’s Marching Band, will perform during the event.

Ahern said the LJAWF has truly become international, offering wines now from such far-flung places as Portugal, Italy, Germany and France, as well as Oregon, domestically.

“We are going to have more than 155 artists,” Ahern said adding, “We encourage merchants to come

and bring their businesses outside on the sidewalk to take advantage of the event.”

In other action: • The LJVMA Board supported nighttime-only work on the Torrey Pines Slope Stabilization Project.

LJVMA Board balked at a proposal to temporarily close four parking spaces at 1230 Prospect St. needed during upcoming facade construction. The board agreed it was appropriate for neighboring property owners to weigh-in on the proposal before taking action. The board however did sanction a request for ongoing construction at The Conrad Project to reconfigure its trafficcontrol plan for Fay Avenue.

In May, Alisha Harwylyszyn Frank was elected as president of the La Jolla Village Merchants. She replaced Sheila Fortune. The La Jolla Village News recently chatted with Harwlyyszn Frabnk to discuss her ideas, business, moving from New York and decision to join the LJVMA. Tell us a little about your background.

You are a life coach. Explain what that entails.

Volunteers collect 130,000 pounds of trash at annual Coastal Cleanup Day At the 34th annual Coastal Cleanup Day on Sept. 15, I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD) harnessed the power of people to combat ocean pollution by mobilizing an estimated 7,000 volunteers at 106 cleanup sites in San Diego County, including four on-water sites.

Volunteers including residents, corporate groups, and civic organizations turned their appreciation for the environment into action for the planet by choosing to do their part to protect and enhance their local communities. During this threehour cleanup, volunteers improved the overall health and beauty of the natural environment by removing an estimated 130,000 pounds of trash and debris from San Diego County.

Among the debris, there were several notable odd items collected during the cleanup including: a disco ball, a stuffed animal tiger, 641 golf balls at one location (they were returned to be reused), a snowboard, and fake eyelashes.

Volunteers also restored the local environment through beautification

projects such as mural painting, vegetation trimming, mulching, trail restoration, tree planting and weeding.

While priming a storage container that was covered with a mural at the San Diego Youth Aquatic Center, Mission Bay Park’s senior park ranger Karolynn Estrada-Sparlin, said, “I am looking forward to seeing the final project, for years this has been in my head but now it will be reality thanks to all of you.”

Coastal Cleanup Day was an opportunity for the community members to conserve in more ways than one. As part of the effort to boost zero-waste practices, ILACSD encouraged all youth and adult volunteers to be more sustainable by choosing to bring at least one reusable item for the cleanup like a water bottle, work bucket, or gloves – and many stepped up to the challenge.

Mayor Kevin Faulconer has remained tight-lipped on which way City Council seems to be leaning, though it seems to look good for CCE as an option.

Neighboring municipality Solana Beach, which has had a CCE program since June, the Solana Energy Alliance, has seen a decrease of 2 to 3 percent in their rates.

At the UC San Diego forum, Faulconer said: "In the coming weeks, of course, I'll be making a decision for the City of San Diego on our pathway to clean electricity. And this, along with the other steps that we are taking, really is going to place us with that goal of 100 percent renewable energy by 2035."

Faulconer has garnered support from both sides of this issue, due in

part to his conservative stance moving forward.

“The mayor has done the right thing on this issue,” said Manolatos.

“He’s said, ‘We need clarity from these regulators to know what a government-run utility program would ultimately cost.’”

While the mayor frequently touts the administration’s dedication to their overarching Climate Action Plan, this will ultimately remain a political issue.

“The vote will come down to a decision by City Council, as it is not a public referendum,” said Mark Hughes, volunteer legal counsel for Climate Action Campaign. “Thus far, we know that councilmembers Bry, Ward, Cole and Gomez are onboard with the decision. [Councilmembers] Sherman and Kersey are on the fence. Chris Cate is com-

When prompted on their contested issues of CCE (risk, cost effectiveness and environmental impact), Manolatos said: “Being in San Diego, I believe that we can all say, ‘We’re for clean water, clean energy and a good quality of life.’ The truth is, there are multiple risks involved with operating a government-run utility program.”

“If San Diego does decide to

launch a program like this, ultimately, taxpayers could be on the hook to pay subsidies. Another aspect that is often ignored is that CCAs really haven’t been around that long, so they haven’t proven themselves. If you look at a similar program in a city like Chicago, the government-run utility could not compete on price, so they had to close down the CCA.” Although little will occur until the CPUC’s findings have been thoroughly taken into account, of which no exact time frame has been set, this issue should see some signs of daylight within the weeks to come.

SDFoodInfo.org serves up San Diego restaurant health inspection information

It’s got a new name, a new location and there’s more on the menu.

The County’s Department of Environmental Health has created a new mobile website, SDFoodInfo.org, that gives people a quick, easy way to find and get information about thousands of restaurants, food trucks and markets across the county.

The site will not only let people see three years’ worth of health inspection results for restaurants, it will show a map of the restaurants near them, draw street directions to get there on the map, and even let them call the restaurant if they want to check about reservations.

Just bookmark SDFoodInfo.org on your smartphone or desktop computer and you’re ready to go.

Environmental Health regularly inspects almost 15,000 food facilities, including nearly 8,000 restaurants, as well as food trucks, supermarkets, convenience stores and most of the places that serve or sell food, to make sure they’re complying with food safety regulations.

Residents, tourists, and foodies have been able to see County health inspection results for years to find out if their favorite restaurant has earned an “A” grade card and to get

information about the County’s food inspection program on the department’s web pages.

SDFoodInfo.org, however, will give people more information than ever. First, it expands the number of inspection results for restaurants and food facilities, from the three most recent inspections to the last three years’ worth of inspections.

SDFoodInfo.org also lets people search for restaurants in several different ways. They can search for a specific restaurant by its name or address.

They can also find groups of restaurants by searching by ZIP codes, by communities, and to a lesser extent, by what type of food they serve — if that type of food is part of the restaurant’s name. For example, people can find restaurants by typing in “taco,” “burger,” “Italian,” or “seafood.”

The new site has already earned a thumbs-up from the San Diego Chapter of the California Restaurant Association (CRA), which represents 1,100 member restaurants and sponsors the popular San Diego Restaurant Week.

“One of CRA’s top priorities is to ensure that customers have the utmost confidence when they eat at our restaurants,” chapter president Chuck Ross said, “and SDFoodIn-

fo.org will help accomplish that goal by providing the dining public with the most up-to-date and accurate information.”

SDFoodInfo.org includes both a map, with pin markers showing the first 30 food facilities nearby, and a text list of restaurants with their addresses and current food grade card — “A,” “B” or “C.” The map and list are side-by-side on a desktop computer; viewers can toggle back and forth between the map and list on a smartphone.

Clicking on a restaurant’s name on the text list, or on the pin-marked names on the map, sends viewers to a more detailed page about the restaurant.

It shows the distance to get to the restaurant, a link to view inspection results, and links that allow the viewer to call the restaurant or file a complaint with Environmental Health’s complaint desk.

Environmental Health inspectors grade restaurants and food facilities on how well they comply with food safety regulations, based on a 100point scale. The scale tests standards ranging from safe food handling, to food temperature control, employee sanitation and hygiene.

Restaurants are expected to score between 90 and 100 points to earn “A” cards that show they are sub-

stantially complying with health codes and keeping people safe. A “B” card reflects a score between 80 and 90 points and means the restaurant needs improvement. A “C” card rep-

resents a failing grade of 79 points or less.

Go 12 rounds with World Champion Boxer Paul Vaden at Lawrence Family JCC There’s a new fitness program in town that is sure to be a real knockout – metaphorically speaking.

Beginning Tuesday, Oct. 9 (for adults) and Saturday, Oct. 13 (for youth ages 10 to 14), retired World Boxing Champion, Paul Vaden, will teach a new fitness class at the Lawrence Family JCC in La Jolla.

Space is imited, so we encourage you to sign up early.

Paul Vaden is the only native San Diegan to win a professional World Boxing Championship and has been inducted into three Boxing Halls of Fame.

Robyn Cohen, JCC sports and fitness director explains: “While known for his illustrious boxing career, Paul is also an inspirational speaker, community leader, author, documentary filmmaker, and corporate consultant.

“We feel fortunate that Paul is an active member of the JCC family and will be providing us with this offering. He may be a retired world boxing champion but his life is far from retired. All he has taken from the ring, he transitions to what he does in his life—in the corporate world, with kids, and with the whole community.”

“Boxing offers what many other fitness classes don’t,” admits Vaden.

“Participants will not only get physical nourishment but there is a huge psychological and mental component that goes along with boxing.

“Students will gain respect for the art of boxing from the technical perspective as well as a respect for the

niques that I, myself, used throughout my career.” Students will improve eye-hand coordination, endurance, strength, sensory awareness and self-reliance by learning boxing fundamentals using bag drills, focus pads, jump rope and footwork drills, “I’m very excited about the youth boxing class,” says Vaden. “Children today spend so much time engaged with their phones and computer screens and spend many hours a day sitting and playing video games.

This class is a great option for both boys and girls to find a different way to engage and learn something real. He continues, “I want kids to be their own champ and experience a new kind of physical activity in a safe learning environment.”

Kimmi Weiss was able to meet Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer last year through the Aaron Price Fellows Program. The University City High volleyball captain says it was a “really scary” experience, but well worth it and one that stands out from the Fellows’ junior-year trip to Washington, D.C. “I had to prepare my question in advance. I had to stand up, introduce myself, and ask my question,” relates the 5-feet-8-inches-tall outside hitter, who also excels in high jump and long jump. “I think it was cool to meet this highly-ranked person, and he was just a regular person.”

Contrast this impression to Weiss’ awe-struck attitude toward seniors at UCHS when she entered as a ninth-grader three years ago. “I don’t feel like a senior,” she says happily. “When I was a freshman, seniors seemed older and mature.”

Her enjoyment of her senior year comes amid duties of being one of Coach Amanda Wiggins’ four captains on the volleyball team, continuing in the Aaron Price program,

which is a four-year commitment she made her first year in high school, and a stellar 4.6 grade-point average carrying three Advanced Placement classes—not to mention her 5-feet-3-inches-tall high-jumping and 16-feet-11-inches longjumping workouts come next spring.

Kimmi serves as ASB Vice President, and her friend Sammie Staples is right next to her with the gavel as student body president. “We joined ASB together last year just for fun.

We really enjoyed it. So we decided to ‘go big or go home’,” she says with a smile. “We made an agreement that she’d run for President and I’d run for vice president.”

The experience continues to be an enjoyable one, and Weiss says she’s keeping the balance that some seniors don’t manage of having fun while maintaining her studies. With the support of mom Nancy and dad Jerry, and her older brother Steven, who is a sophomore at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, the multi-sport athlete is tackling AP Calculus and AP Physics, which are full-year courses, and AP Government, which is semester-long.

“When I went to Washington,

D.C. [and met Justice Breyer], I didn’t know much about government,” she confesses. “But now taking government, I’m learning more about it.”

Her stance in life right now seems to be in remaining teachable, with eyes wide open, while serving as a model to the younger players on the varsity volleyball team, as well as the JV and freshman players.

“We have a big team, 16 players (nine non-seniors). I hope they look up to me in some way,” she says. “On the court, I try to be a model, being as positive as I can.”

The Centurion volleyball team has stepped up to a special challenge this year in moving from Division II to Division I in Wiggins’ second year as head coach. “We have the skills to rise up, but we’re going to have to fight in every game,” says the senior captain.

Weiss had 45 kills in the Centurions’ first eight games, second only to teammate Nadia Merkel with 59. On defense, Kimmi had 62 digs, second on the team to Rachel Gonsalves with 75.

Fashion files: ‘Fashion & Masters’at the Timken Museum Fashion Files Diana Cavagnaro

The Timken Museum of Art in Balboa Park presented “Fashion & Masters: 18th Century France” on Sept. 13. This amazing event examines Rococo fashions in the life of wealthy Parisians.

Historian Maxwell Barr gave a lecture on their life by showing attendees, garment by garment, how they would have dressed. A live model was dressed to illustrate the attire that was worn in the 18th century.

Barr began by saying that fashion was so important that (much like today) dolls were used to show the latest fashions.

They were sent to other cities promoting the fashion of the period even during war. Women emulated these dolls, for this was a time in history when the bourgeois in Paris wore their wealth on their body to let you know what they had.

Barr takes 18th-century portraits and recreates the garments as close as possible to the original (one of his creations took 350 hours to create).

The evening’s model, Megan Smith, came to the stage wearing an undergarment called a “chemise,” which is made from linen.

Next, Smith put on silk stockings that were tied with a silk ribbon and then stepped into a comfortable pair of shoes that were called mules. An 18th-century corset was the next piece of clothing exhibited.

Corsets were much more comfortable during the 18th century, highly due to the boning being placed at a 45-degree angle, while those fabricated in the 19th century were vertical and rather uncomfortable.

Next came the under-petticoat and then the top-petticoat. The length was shorter to show off the models’ expensive shoes.

This outfit was topped off with gloves, hat and a necklace. In Paris, women usually changed their outfit four to eight times a day, and would have at least three people to aid them while dressing.

The audience was given four different clothing changes beginning with morning, lunch and evening.

They finished up dressing the model for a masquerade ball with a cape called a domino.

During the evening, Barr had a vintage fan from 1774, which complimented the outfit that Smith was wearing.

Barr continued the presentation with the fascinating Language of Fans. One example he gave was putting the fan over the heart that means, “I am yours for life.”

Another example was putting the handle of the fan to your lips, which means, “Will you kiss me?” The audience was spellbound listening to Barr, who gave everyone a brief look into this period of history and of fantasy dressing.

Maxwell Barr made period costumes for TV, movies and the fashion business for 34 years, and then went on to head the Costume Shop for the School of Theater, Film and Television at UCLA.

He began studying the 18th Century Fashion at LACMA, after being asked to create a costume from this period. Barr gave a remarkable lecture on this intriguing subject, and will be demonstrating French Fashion at the Getty Center Museum on Oct. 13 at 11:30 a.m. For a list of more upcoming events at the Timken Museum of Arts, visit timkenmuseum.org.

Junior surf contest set for Oct. 6 at La Jolla Shores

The Windansea Surf Club has announced that entries are now being accepted for its annual Menehune and Junior Surf Contest to be held Saturday, Oct. 6 at La Jolla Shores.

Long board and short board divisions for all age groups are offered for boys and girls 16 years of age and under, including the popular (and very entertaining) Super Menehunes for 6 year olds and under.

The event attracts young competitive surfers and their families from throughout the West Coast, Hawaii and Baja California. The granddaddy of all junior surf contests, the WindanSea Menehune contest was first held at La Jolla

While La Jolla’s new art exhibition is officially titled, “The Quest for Rhythm,” San Diego native Michael Carini unofficially calls this show his “quest for balance,” or “my rhythm of stability.” Carini’s artistic journey may not have been as smooth as his paint brushes—suffering loss, addiction and assault and battery, but the triumphs have been works of art, literally. On Oct. 12, guests will have the chance to get to know Carini’s avant-garde heart, as well as explore the rhythmic relationship between metal, paint and music.

“The Quest for Rhythm” will open at La Playa Gallery, located at 2226 Avenida De La Playa, on Friday, Oct. 12 with a wine and cheese reception from 5 to 8 p.m. where guests can connect with each artist, ask questions and even purchase some of the works. The exhibition will run through Nov. 23.

“Group shows are fun because they offer a wide variety in terms of how the artist might perceive the concept in a different way,” said Carini. “My work is very much about construction and deconstruction and, as an artist and individual, what I’m often trying to find in life is some sort of stability, some kind of balance.”

The idea for the exhibit sprouted

when La Playa Art Gallery’s owner visited the Liberty Station showcase of Molly Larson Cook, a painter who draws her inspiration from jazz music. Originally, the exhibit was based around Larson Cook, but curator Erica Putis eventually found two more artists who were also compatible with the theme—metalworks sculptor Becky Guttin and acrylic painter Carini.

“I thought it was interesting to find that connection between the three artists,” said Putis. “Everybody has their own rhythm when it comes to how they make their art. I thought it would be interesting to connect all these different genres and personalities, underlying rhythm in everything anyone creates.”

Guttin’s rhythm stems from the family dynamic that’s at the core of each sculpture she creates. But for Carini, his paints pulse to the beat of a healing body, mind and spirit.

His first collection of work, The Upside of Down, was the result of Carini suffering an assault and battery in 2009 that put him in the hospital with multiple facial fractures, a concussion, and severe eye trauma. Years later, the assailant reached out to Carini to apologize and the artist even gave the man’s daughter one of the first-inspired paintings from his collection. The two still keep in touch and Carini

says that this incident was a blessing in disguise, as it got him back into the studio.

“In a way, it’s sort of a happyever-after-type story,” said Carini.

With glowing colors, dripping backgrounds and geometric shapes that seem to float to the front of the viewer’s vision, there’s an evident tug-of-war between whimsical chaos and a desire for structure.

This also explains the artist’s choice in title.

“I like to play with words the same way I play with imagery and visual elements,” said Carini. “I figure, as an artist and someone who creates, you can also create through the playfulness and utilization of reconstructing language.”

Carini’s collections—“The Upside of Down,” the more organic and free-flowing “Boy in the Box,” “Regenaissance” and “Faces of the Parabox”—all focus on the struggles and difficulties of life, using them as “sacrifices” to create something positive and beautiful. This is why Carini calls himself “The Acrylic Alchemist.”

“I cycle back and forth between projects, depending on the balance I feel I need,” said Carini. “It’s all part of that quest for rhythm. I may feel I’ve been a little ‘too’ free-flowing and need to get back to working with a little bit of structure again. I cycle back when I’m trying

to rediscover my place.”

The last time Carini worked on “The Upside of Down” was in 2012, before he took a five-year absence to do a tribute project for his father, who had committed suicide. Carini even spent part of the project painting his father’s suicide note, which was never actually left.

But now, Carini has revisited “The Upside of Down,” and will

showcase five new works from the collection, including “King Nothing and the Discovery of the Lost Venus (For SAMO)” inspired by the graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, and “I Am Who Am I” tying in some of Carini’s Catholic upbringing.

La Jolla fall fanatic, Barbara Beltaire, retires from restaurant

The seasonal supernatural Halloween decorations and annual Barbara “meet ups” remain, but unconventional longtime La Jolla Shores restaurateur Barbara Beltaire has left.

Beltaire, who moved to the La Jolla neighborhood nearly 30 years ago to start Piatti, before moving across the street to create Barbarella Restaurant & Bar, recently closed out one career to begin another.

“I just wanted to do something different,” said Beltaire, who’s retiring from the restaurant business to devote her full attention to her new children’s charity, I Love You So So Much.

“I’m passionate about my new foundation,” said Beltaire. “It’s been in the works for a year. It is 100 percent individual gift donations to foster care, the elderly and canine companions.”

Of her foundation named for her granddaughter’s comments to her, Beltaire said, “ I look forward to my new venture. I’m working on making it citywide, nationwide.”

The longtime restaurateur said her new foundation will aid people of all ages, everyone from foster kids to seniors in nursing homes who need things like reading glasses.

“I’m very passionate about helping the disabled with their problems, like getting a canine companion,” Beltaire said.

Beltaire said it was just time to move on. “I feel I have so many different things to offer,” she said noting, “I’m able to start something new, and still give, but in a different way.”

Barbarella will always be known and remembered most for its annual countless Halloween decorations that made it not only “go bump,”

but stand out in the night.

Another of Beltaire’s many passions, Beltaire previously noted her Halloween decorating “started small, with people sending me things,” then really took off, “When I started getting into it after seeing the reaction of the kids and adults. I was having so much fun, I turned it into something that I could give to the community once a year.”

Beltaire had so many decorations, she had to store them in a warehouse most of the year. The extent of her scary decorations was truly astounding. Beltaire estimated she’d invested as much as $100,000 over the years in spiders, bats, ghosts, ghouls, and a mummy “choir,” as well as some 50 “mechanicals” that howled, hooted and leered while being endlessly entertaining/frightening.

Barbarella also sponsored Barbara Day, celebrated every year on Dec. 4, for those sharing her first name.

Barbarella hosted a special invitation-only event that day for all the Barbaras to come down with a gift in hand to share in a wing-ding. All event proceeds were donated to a worthy charity.

Beltaire said Barbara Day and the awesome Halloween haunting will continue at Barbarella’s, at least for one more year. In fact, she’ll be coordinating and decorating for both.

La Jolla-based Torrey Holistics purveys cannabis-infused wine

With the La Jolla Art and Wine Festival occurring over the weekend, Torrey Holistics, the only dispensary located in District 1, is busy promoting a truly high-end product – California’s first cannabis-infused sauvignon blanc. In partnership with Palos Verdes-based Rebel Coast Winery, Torrey Holistics has been selling the millennial-marketed wine, which contains no alcohol, since discovering its existence earlier this year. Since local statutes still prohibit the consumption of marijuana in a public place, Torrey Holistics’ booth at the LJAWF will be displaying empty bottles of the product.

The THC-laden aperitif contains 20 milligrams of tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. That means that each glass contains 5 milligrams, which, according to the winery, is enough to get you “high, not stoned.” Each bottle carries a retail price of $59.95, which is comparable to any other decent bottle. As mentioned previously, Rebel Coast’s sauvignon blanc also contains no alcohol whatsoever, which means there’s no hangover.

Products like Rebel Coast’s wine echo a macro-societal hope of the marijuana industry – to shatter decades’ worth of pejorative stereotypes associated with cannabis consumption.

UCSD study to examine effects of cannabis for Common Movement Disorder Researchers at University of California School of Medicine are preparing to launch a novel clinical trial to examine the safety, efficacy and pharmacological properties of cannabis as a potential treatment for adults with essential tremor (ET). Currently, ET is treated using repurposed medications originally developed for high blood pressure or seizures. Surgery is another option.

Scheduled for early 2019, the phase I/II trial will assess efficacy and tolerability of an oral cannabis formulation comprised of cannabidiol (CBD) and low-dose tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Researchers say it will be the first time this combination has been studied for treatment of ET. “This study will provide key insights,” said Fatta Nahab, MD, neurologist at UC San Diego Health and associate professor of neurosciences at UC San Diego School of Medicine. “If found to be safe and effective, cannabis would not only serve as an exciting new addition to the limited treatment options currently available for patients with ET, but it might also provide scientists with new insights on essential tremor.”

The oral combination of CBD and THC is the first-of-its-kind to be studied and is especially interesting to CMCR.” The double-blind, placebo-control, cross-over clinical trial will enroll 16 adult participants who have been diagnosed with ET by a movement disorder neurologist.

By Natasha Josefowitz, Ph.D. I was recently asked to speak at a “Women in Leadership” symposium at the University Club as part of a panel organized by the Executive Women’s Council. I found the questions thought-provoking, and so I am sharing some of them here along with my responses.

1. What does leadership mean to you, and what’s your leadership style?

I believe in participative leadership which means decisions are not made alone, but shared with those who will be impacted. It is important to ask for input and have a subsequent discussion on the reasons for the decisions.

My leadership style is to be direct, approachable, and open-minded.

Open house on University Community Plan Update The City of San Diego is updating the University Community Plan, which was first adopted in 1987, more than 30 years ago.

The update’s collaborative process will include opportunities for public input, with the first opportunity will be an Open House on Wednesday, Sept. 26, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Nobel Recreation Center, located at 8810 Judicial Drive.

The updated Community Plan will consider current conditions, citywide goals in the Climate Action Plan and the general plan, and community specific goals to provide direction for the long-term development of the community.

KAABOO Del MAr celebrates closing of sold-out festival KAABOO Del Mar successfully proved that it has shifted the festival paradigm by celebrating its 4th annual event in Del Mar, California with a sell out.

The fully immersive experience not only captured a top-tier lineup of world-class musicians such as Foo Fighters, Imagine Dragons, Katy Perry, and Robert Plant and The Sensational Space Shifters, but also offered guests an elevated weekend featuring a feast for all senses with live contemporary art installments in Artwork; Vegas-style cabanas at bask; culinary exhibits atPalate; big laughs at Humor Me; and spa services at Indulgences.
