HEADING BACK-TO-SCHOOL MAKES SUMMER MEMORIES EVEN SWEETER

As summer vacation draws to a close La Jolla’s kids, tweens and teenagers are collectively enjoying their last few days of freedom.

By next Monday, most parents will be back in the school grind. Students and parents from La Jolla Elementary, Muirlands Middle School and La Jolla High School all chime in on their favorite summer activities and thoughts on commencing a new school year.

For many parents, back-to-school is a time of year when one can almost hear their neighbor silently counting down the minutes until that first school bell rings. “Summer is wonderful but it’s also a push to keep the kids busy... it’s like they become bored after a few hours! I’m ready for them to go back,” mused Tammy Marcus-Cohen. “I love to have the time with the kids, but it also means I’m ‘on’ full-time; and I already have a job.”

Marcus-Cohen’s daughter, Isabella, 11, is transitioning into sixth grade at Muirlands Middle School after spending her elementary school years in Birdrock Elementary.

She said she’s not happy in the least about summer coming to an end.

“There’s too much homework in school. I do look forward to seeing my friends but I don’t like having six different periods of classes. It’s too much. I like having one class and that’s it.”

Many students entering middle school have similar feelings about what will be a new system for them of moving from class to class in middle school. It’s not surprising since they’re accustomed to being taught by one teacher while in one class in elementary school. But, for Isabella, there are still a few days left of summer, and her tone became notice-

ably cheerier when questions of summer-fun came into play. Like many kids, Isabella enjoyed hanging out with her friends at the beach or the pool. However, her favorite activity this summer was her visit to the Great Wolf Lodge indoor water park resort located in Garden Grove.

The waterpark is California’s only indoor water park with over 105,000 square feet of slides, rides and pools. “It was cool because it has really cool slides. There’s this one waterslide that you go inside of in this tube and the person touches the lever and then you go down the slide. It goes straight down and then (starts bending around).”

Nicolas Carlson, who made sure it was understood that he was sevenand-a-half years old (not just seven) will be starting second grade at La Jolla Elementary School on Monday.

When asked if he was excited to start school again his hand moved emphatically back and forth. “I kind of like school and I kind of like summer... it’s hard to tell which one I like more.”

His summer included an assortment of activities and a few trips. “I like visiting my grandparents in Palm Springs. I like it there because they have this nice tram where you can go and look at the top of the mountain and see the whole Palm Spring’s village. It feels like you’re looking up from the heavens to me.”

The awe-inspiring ride Nicolas mentioned is the idyllic Palm Springs Aerial Tramway which travels over two-and-one-half miles along Chino Canyon to the Mt. San Jacinto State Park at 8516 feet.

But Nicolas also had fun while on solid ground. He said he enjoyed playing soccer at the park and engaging in a sword game called “Hunters” and “Dragon Slayers.”

These are games that Nicolas and his buddies made up. Only sevenand-a-half and already creating games which could one day become competition to the fantasy footfall craze. He also had fun in his “favorite summer camp,” the Vacation Bible Study (VBS) held at the La Jolla Presbyterian Church. And here is his advice for kids who may be a bit nervous about starting school up again: “You shouldn’t be scared to be back in school because you get to play and learn a lot of stuff you couldn’t learn in camp unless you take a certain class where all you (do is) just learn and learn and learn.” Sound advice.

His mother, Karen Carlson, said she feels it’s “bitter sweet” to see school start and summer end. “It is nice to enjoy a more relaxed pace over the summer and get away for a vacation. But, it is also fun for school to start because there are so many nice families at La Jolla Elementary School as well as the teachers and staff. It is a great community of people. It's always so lovely to see everyone again.”

As for La Jolla High School varsity cheerleader team captain, Diana Dominguez, 17, summer found her spending a lot of time practicing with the team. And while the senior captain had a few vacation days visiting family in Guadalajara, Mexico, many of them were cheer-related sprinkled with some bonfires and days at the beach. Diana’s coaches and team members voted for her to be head captain of the team again this year. “It feels good to be leader of the team... I think it shows that your coach recognizes you and sees leadership in you. And it gives you confidence when you’re walking around the halls of school.”

Head cheer coach Cindee Russell knows the importance of having a united team that respects what each team member brings to the field.

And Russell has put valiant effort into coaching the team again this

summer, including joining the team at UCSD’s National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) camp.

“I thought the camp was incredibly beneficial for them. It taught the girls a lot, it challenged them and it made them overcome a lot of obstacles they had... they got a lot out of it.” Diana agrees with her coach.

“You learn technique, skills and performance abilities in camp. They have actual coaches from the NCA who teach us and have been around for a long time.”

All-in-all, Diana confirmed her summer was certainly busy. So, what is she not looking forward to this new school year? “My math class. It isn’t my favorite subject, but I’m looking forward to bonding with my team more and making the best out of it.”

Come Monday, Aug. 29, La Jolla will have the familiar view of cars lining the sidewalks as students scurry in and out of school. Traffic will become a challenge and afterschool-programs will start.

Keep an eye out for students walking and bicycling ... remember, it’s not easy starting up school when the weather beckons one to the beach and even the ocean of Wind’Sea can be watched by students in both Muirlands and La Jolla High School.

La Jolla Parks & Beaches discusses sea lions and the Brown Act

By DAVE SCHWAB In August La Jolla Parks & Beaches (LJPB) Inc. got a primer on the Brown Act, and voted to send a letter asking the city to take action deterring the Cove sea lion infestation.

Marilyn Stern, city parks district manager, presented on what can and cannot be done under the Brown Act. “The Brown Act is intended to ensure complete openness and access at public meetings,” Stern said noting “transparency is the main goal.”

Describing the city's parks planning “hierarchy,” Stern noted the topmost level is the City Council, followed in descending order by the city's Parks & Rec governing board, then city advisory committees like LJPB, and finally by rec council's like La Jolla's governing the La Jolla Rec Center.

Stern, however, noted that small, sub groups appointed by committees which make recommendations to the group as a whole, like LJPB's sea lions working group, are “not held accountable” by the Brown Act. “No decisions, no votes, no actions can be taken by them,” she said noting emails are allowed. Stern warned, however, that email “chains” distributed among community planners outside proscribed

meetings could be pushing the envelope of Brown Act legality.

Alleged Brown Act violations should be reported to city officials to begin investigations into the veracity of the charges, Stern added.

LJPB board member Debbie Beacham addressed the growing problem of sea lions fouling Cove waters and taking over the beach.

“There needs to be a political solution to get something done at the

Cove,” said Beacham following the recent publishing of the Hanan Report, a year-long study on La Jolla pinnipeds. That report recommends using National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) approved, non-lethal deterrence methods for marine mammals, such as crowder boards or low-voltage fencing.

“We're behind on this, we should have done this a year ago,” said longtime parks planner Merryweather about Beacham's proposal to send a letter to the city advocating that it “take immediate measures to protect the health and safety of citizens” con-

“We need to drive a stake in the ground and put a deadline to it, otherwise the mayor's answer is going to have the word 'study' in it, Robbins said. “You're going to have to give the mayor a deadline, or we're just going to keep shoving this (what to do about pinnipeds) around from one group to another.”

The group's vote was 11-2-1 to send a letter to the city urging prompt action to allow non-lethal methods of deterring sea lions.

In other action: • Merryweather decried the group's action last month to allow Scripps Park to be used to host a forprofit jazz festival. “It's the beginning of the end,” warned Merryweather who is an outspoken opponent of the park's commercialization.

• LJPB Board voted unanimously to allow the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) to host its 23rd annual triathlon fundraiser for disabled athletes at Scripps Browning Park on Oct. 23. CAF rep Virginia Tinley said pinniped pollution in the Cove, where the swimming leg of the cycling, running and swimming event is held, was not considered to be not serious enough now to move the triathlon.

News The year the music died? Concerts By the Sea may end this season in La Jolla

By DAVE SCHWAB La Jolla Concerts By the Sea's 33rd season this year will be the nonprofit's last if a way isn't found to make the series self-sustaining.

It's been a bad year for signature events in “the Jewel,” as the community's century-old annual Rough Water Swim in September had to be temporarily cancelled earlier this year due to pinniped pollution at the Cove.

“La Jolla Concerts by the Sea regrets that they will cease operations at the end of this season of free summer concerts, due to increased requirements imposed by the city and county and a lack of support,” said group president Shirleymae Davis.

“The board of directors has decided to cease operations after the 2016 season, and will not move forward with plans for a 2017 season or beyond. The corporation will, however, maintain their remaining assets for one to two years, with the hope that someone in the San Diego community would come forward with a long-term financing plan that could make resurrecting the Concerts a viable option,” Davis said.

the community to step up and provide us with that financing,” said Laura DeBell, the nonprofit's secretary who noted the city's permitting and other costs, in some instances, tripled this year.

“The operating costs became onerous,” agreed Ron Jones, a board member of the nonprofit who has mc'd the concert series for years.

“The city's been increasing demands for more money for the same services we've been providing.”

The popular summertime event has been in financial trouble, losing money for years, as well as having trouble finding – and keeping – sponsors. Davis noted only seven of this year's eight concerts had sponsors.

More than 30 years ago when the concert series started, Davis said the city “actually supported us,” even going so far as to loan out facilities and equipment for staging the event. But no longer, “They (city) keep trying to get more and more money out of us as if we were a cash cow,” said Davis.

“They're eliminating our ability to

make enough money and keep the concerts going.”

Davis said the nonprofit's gradually been squeezed over the years by increasing city demands, like doubling the number of porta potties and requiring them to use their own dumpster as well as requiring concessions to be sold by vendors, and not the nonprofit, putting on the concerts.

The concerts are free to the public, but Davis noted producing them comes with a price tag.

“Each of our concerts costs us roughly $4,500,” she said. “What we really need is about $19,000 a year to keep this thing running.”

“We're not going to have a season next year at all,” said Davis adding, “But if we can find someone, or some company, willing to give us a long-term, five- to 10-year promise of funding, then we'll continue. Otherwise, we'll dissolve the 501 c3 nonprofit corporation.”

Concerts By the Sea is a 501 c3 nonprofit started by group president Shirleymae Davis back in 1983.

The concert series has been held ever since every summer between July and September at Ellen Brown Scripps Park on Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. The last two concerts in 2016 are The Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash Aug. 28 and The Heroes on Sept.4.

Scripps Health CEO named one of Most Influential People in Healthcare Scripps Health president and CEO Chris Van Gorder has been named No. 74 on Modern Healthcare’s annual ranking of the nation’s 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare, which was published in the magazine’s Aug. 22 edition.

This is the eighth time that Van Gorder has landed on the prestigious list, and he was the only per-

son from San Diego County to make the rankings.

Van Gorder oversees more than 15,000 employees at five acute-care hospital campuses and 28 outpatient clinics operated by the nonprofit health system in San Diego County. More than 3,000 physicians are affiliated with the organization.

The annual 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare list honors individuals in health care who are deemed by magazine readers, their peers and senior editors of Modern Healthcare to be the most influential individuals in the industry, in terms of leadership and impact.

Topping this year’s list was President Barack Obama.

La Jolla Bank manager sentenced to home detention

By NEAL PUTNAM A former vice president of the now defunct La Jolla Bank who took bribes was sentenced Monday to home detention for one year. She was ordered to come up with $1.45 million in restitution.

Amalia Martinez, 52, was given credit for several days previously spent in jail by U.S. District Court Judge Anthony Battaglia who said he was not imposing any more jail time in light of circumstances in her family.

Martinez’s husband was hospitalized this last weekend and Amalia Martinez is caring for her sister who has epilepsy, said her attorney, Michael Berg.

Martinez currently works at another bank in the collection department, but Battaglia remarked that her felony conviction of conspiracy to misapply bank funds may preclude her from continuing to work there.

Martinez will be on electronic surveillance on conditions of three years probation. Work, hospital visits, religious services, dentist and medical appointments are all exceptions from the home detention order.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily Allen asked for a 21-month prison term. Martinez worked at La Jolla Bank for 10 years, and her last position was vice president and Small Business Administration lending department manager.

The bank failed in February 2010 with an outstanding debt of $1 billion which was absorbed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation(FDIC) and ultimately, taxpayers, according to the U.S. Attorney. Martinez’s restitution order says she should pay $482,283 to the FDIC, and $973,789 to the Small Business Administration.

“Mrs. Martinez knows she will

be paying it back for the rest of her life,” said Berg.

Berg said Martinez did not have a lavish lifestyle, and described her as “a pawn” of others who have not been charged. He said Martinez was “sexually harassed” at the bank by one male executive. Berg said senior officials directed her to okay risky loans.

“You’re getting every benefit of the doubt today,” said Battaglia, who noted that three other codefendants also received home detention sentences.

Battaglia sentenced former loan broker Jocelyn J. Brown, 60, on Aug. 15 to 10 months of home confinement on terms of three years probation. He ordered Brown to pay restitution of $82,185, which Battaglia said represented her commissions.

Brown pleaded guilty to making false statements to a federal agent about the bribes she paid to Martinez. The prosecutor sought a 10month prison term for Brown.

Both Brown and Martinez could have been sentenced to five years in federal prison.

Brown is the caretaker for her elderly mother who has dementia.

Battaglia said he imposed home detention for Brown so she can “care for Mom” in her home.

Brown told the judge her reputation as a loan broker was ruined and “I can’t work in a bank anymore.” She asked Battaglia for “a second chance to prove to people I’m not a bad person.”

Brown’s attorney, Ira Plummer, said “she was put in a position where she was asked to (pay) kickbacks” in exchange for approving risky loans. He said businesses and others pressured her to approve bad loans.

Both Martinez and Brown apologized for their roles in the case.

They both had no criminal records before this offense.

A letter from the new editor Dear Readers, Growing up in La Jolla has been an experience in itself. How can one complain when the most gorgeous beaches greet you throughout the Village. As a native of this lovely town, I have been lucky enough to call many of its residents my friends.

After graduating from Muirlands, I went to La Jolla High as a sophomore. The freshman joined us that year, marking the first year La Jolla High became a high school for freshman through senior grades; and the last year Muirlands Junior High was still known as a junior high and represented grades seven through nine. Now it’s a middle school. And the high school no longer allows students to stroll the streets during the lunch period. I would have found it difficult through high school to not have the freedom to spend my lunch propped up on the ledge above the shack gazing at the waves of Wind’Sea. My friends and I spent most of our formative years next to the pump house lounging on the sand (with tons of tanning oil sans-SPF, of course). After high school, I went to SDSU and graduated with a degree in journalism. I lingered in La Jolla for awhile and began my writing career freelancing at the La Jolla Light. And I also became a Realtor.

But, it was time for me to venture away and it didn’t take long for me to move to Los Angeles to “follow my dreams.” LA teaches you that

everyone has a dream and you must push your way through doors, or even sneak in through the back. I continued doing real estate under my dad’s brokerage company, Croesus Realty and after many freelancing gigs, I ended up as the managing editor of The Hollywood Weekly Magazine. The magazine was headquartered at Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood for awhile and this afforded me tremendous opportunities to interview producers, actors, directors, set decorators, coordinators and just about anyone who was quick with grabbing a coffee for their boss.

There were two important views from the windows of our building where I would watch the irony of both “fiction” and “reality” collide.

One particular window offered a view of a lot that served as the set of the hit-show “Dexter.” While out

the other window, I looked upon worn-down homes with sofas and old electronic equipment in the front yard along with multiple dogs barking at people on the dirty sidewalk.

One side represented pure fantasy; glittered with actors memorizing lines, food trucks, costumes and trailers; the other side represented stark reality. The views kept me immersed in the paradoxical parallels of our society. It was an unforgettable time.

But, time elapses and we move on... so back to La Jolla I returned.

There’s nothing like being close to your parents and dear friends.

It’s with great pleasure I come full circle right back to the place I started as a writer. I look forward to being the managing editor and working alongside the other professionals here at San Diego Community Newspaper Group.

I have enjoyed reading the La Jolla Village News as much as you have, and look forward to implementing new ideas while continuing to do what we do best: bring you as much local news as possible.

Please connect with me and share your story ideas and thoughts. I’m here to represent La Jolla in all its diversity. I just feel bad for students who don’t have the freedom to sit and ponder life at Wind’Sea as I did as a student at La Jolla High. Watch closely, you might still see me there.

San Diego students first in English among state’s large school systems The California Department of Education released the results of the Smarter Balanced tests taken by area students this past spring.

Among large, urban districts in the state, San Diego Unified students ranked first in English language arts – an improvement from second last year.

San Diego schools ranked second in mathematics behind San Francisco. The state’s Smarter Balanced test is given annually to students in grades 3-8 and 11.

“As parents and educators, we know our students achieve more when we ask more from them. We saw that with our strong graduation results and we have seen it again today with these impressive test results,” said San Diego Unified superintendent Cindy Marten. “San Diego can feel very proud of our students, parents and teachers based on the hard work reflected in these new test results."

San Diego Unified students ranked first in the state among large, urban districts in English language arts with 57 percent of all area students either meeting or exceeding grade-level expectation – up 6 points over last year.

The largest gains were among third, fourth and seventh graders, as test scores rose 8 percentage points among each. There were also strong gains at the subpopu-

lation level among Latinos (up 9 points), Filipinos (up 8 points) and African Americans (up 7 points).

San Diego Unified students also made gains in mathematics, increasing 4 points over last year and ranking second among large, urban districts across the state.

The testing found 45 percent of students performing at or above grade-level expectations.

The largest increases were among third graders, who raised their test scores 9 points over last year. As with English, there were also gains at the subpopulation level, where Latinos showed the largest increase – 5 points over last year.

This is the second year of the Smarter Balanced tests. These assessments are aligned with the new state standards, which were designed to encourage critical thinking, analytical writing, and real-world problem solving. These are skills students need to be successful in school and in life.

They replaced the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program and encompass the assessments and alternative assessments for English language arts and literacy, mathematics, and science.

SDUSD to provide Pre-K for area families San Diego Unified School District recently announced a major new initiative to provide pre-kindergarten (Pre-K) opportunities for thousands of new families across the region.

While continuing to serve eligible families with free Pre-K options, San

Diego Unified has announced a new fee-based program that will allow additional families to access highquality, affordable Pre-K for the first time.

To accommodate the increased opportunities, local elementary schools are opening several new

Pre-K facilities across San Diego. The changes will begin taking effect this year with the start of school on Monday, Aug. 29.

“Thousands of families in San Diego have been unable to afford the high cost of private Pre-K programs and unable to qualify for free pro-

Man’s best friends may eat, drink and drool at ‘Yappy Hour’ in La Jolla

By JENNY WERTH Looking for a dog-friendly restaurant where you and Fluffy can go hang out and drink some beer together? Yes, the love-for-dogs just keeps getting more intense as witnessed by the newest trend of dog-friendly eateries.

Many dog-lovers just don’t want to leave their four-legged friend at home!

Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery comes to the rescue for you and your furry friends thanks to the Pints & Paws events spearheaded by Courtney Druschen and Samantha Eastburn.

The best friends and now business partners created Pints & Paws to satisfy a need for ‘dog pawtys’ and fundraising efforts. They started up five months ago and have already watched their efforts skyrocket throughout La Jolla and San Diego.

And they thought long and hard about what makes a pet-owner feel closest to their pup: sharing a beer!

Perhaps it’s true that pet owners don’t want to watch their dog salivate without their own special drink so the best friends created a beer for them too. No, not the alcoholic kind. The safe-for-your-pup kind made with everything from peanut butter to beef bone marrow and honey.

“We couldn’t get enough of meeting so many locals and supporters who love beer and their pups! We wanted our dogs to join along as well,

All Pints & Paws events support what they’ve dubbed a ‘furiend’ in the community to help raise money and awareness for the pups targeted in each respective charity. “Rock Bottom in La Jolla has been amazing to work with and we’ve been throwing fundraisers there every month so far.

Through these events, we have met so many different dog companies like EntoBento who makes healthy dog treats using cricket powder as their protein and Muttropolis who has

adorable dog clothing and accessories. (At) each event we ask two different vendors to join along to help support us and they get to promote their products too!”

La Jolla Muttropolis employee, Diana Herrin, said she feels any event that assists dogs is beneficial. “People are always excited when they can involve their dogs in any kind of activity.” And although the EntoBento treats have just graced their shelves, they’re already a huge hit. “It’s cool to have crickets in a treat. It’s different and sustainable; it’s what our customers look for.”

Indeed, both the pups and partners grow with each new ‘pawty.’ And their efforts are creating a heartwarming effect for man’s best friend and their advocates. Samantha said she believes dogs bring out the best in humans. “We put a lot of planning and effort into throwing these events for other charities and truly see the love and support. At the end of each event, Courtney and I have the biggest smiles glued to our faces, we literally do this from the bottom of our hearts... we love seeing how a small, fun event with dogs and beer can have a huge impact on a life.”

The last few months the business partners have decided to choose a specific breed rescue group to be the sole beneficiary of the events. This Sunday’s event will benefit the Guide Dogs for the Blind. The ‘pawty’ will start with a ruff at 4 p.m. and continue until the dogs-come-home at 7 p.m.

Drones provide a view from above for photos and more

By DAVE SCHWAB Drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as they are more commonly known, are not only becoming less expensive and more technologically advanced – but are almost certain to be more plentiful in San Diego's future skyscape.

If you don't believe it, just ask Bill Ludwig, CEO/executive producer of Bill Ludwig Productions. Ludwig uses drones frequently in his media, marketing and video production company to photograph communities to be used in promotions.

Bringing his company's drone along for a demonstration, Ludwig noted drones have four (or more) propellors. He added they are also remote-controlled and battery-operated, weigh about five- to sevenpounds and are unmanned flying craft (essentially mini helicopters).

“It's stunning the images it will create,” Ludwig said of his drone pointing to a small camera mounted on its undercarriage.

Not only that, Ludwig pointed out that drones are also much safer now, and are even “returnable.”

“I can push a button on my remote, and my drone will immediately return to within inches of where it was launched,” he said.

Drones and their technology is actually nothing new. UAV's have been used for many years, especially by the military, for missions that were considered too "dull, dirty or dangerous" for humans. Their use has expanded widely now in commercial, scientific, recreational, agricultural, and other applications, including policing and surveillance, aerial photography, agriculture and even drone “racing.” Civilian drones now vastly outnumber military drones, with estimates of over a million sold by 2015.

Ian Gregor, public affairs manager for the Federal Aviation Administration's Pacific Division noted, “You don’t need FAA authorization to fly a drone for recreational/hobby purposes. However, Gregor said there are guidelines available at www.faa.gov/uas/getting_started/fl y_for_fun/.

Gregor pointed out all drones “must operate safely so they don’t endanger people or property on the ground. Anyone who operates (them) unsafely can face fines from the FAA. Many local governments also have privacy laws that apply to drone operators.”

Recently, the FAA finalized its rules on the commercial use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) weighing up to 55 pounds. Those rules went into effect this month (August). These new rules mark the FAA's first attempt at a comprehensive plan to ensure the safe use of small UAS's by commercial entities without interested parties having to seek case-by-case approval.

Some key UAS provisions: • UAS operators will not be required to obtain a traditional pilot's license.

• UAS's must fly below 400 feet, during daylight hours, and within line of sight of the operator.

• Certain airspaces will require

additional permissions to fly UAS's.

The new rule gives general authority for operating UAS's in Class G airspace – low altitude airspace far from any airport. Flight in Class B, C, D, and E airspace will require permission from Air Traffic Control (ATC).

• The new rule does not apply to recreation/hobby use of UAS's. Hobbyists who use UAS's recreationally are not required to obtain any licensing. However, the new rules codify that all UAS's are aircraft and therefore subject to FAA enforcement actions if operators are reckless or fly in prohibited zones.

Back to the drone demonstration, Ludwig launched his UAS from the shore in Crown Point showing how perfectly it can hover, not unlike a hummingbird. “It can go left-right, up-down, or turn around in a circular motion,” he noted.

Ludwig then flew his unmanned

craft over Mission Bay “buzzing” a jet skier out on the water.

“You're really not going to go out and buy one of these things (at $800 to $3,000-plus cost) if you're going to be reckless with it,” Ludwig commented adding, “If you crash it or drop it in the water — that's a big investment.”

Ludwig said drones are perfect for aerial photography, pointing out he recently shot drone footage of Dana Point to showcase that community.

It was so breathtaking in its quality that local officials there wanted to use the drone's footage in all of their promotional materials.

In his long experience flying drones, Ludwig said the only issue has been encountering “the occasional overzealous seagull” who becomes interested enough in the flying craft to inspect it more closely.

That, Ludwig said, is when the bring-back button on the remote

comes into play.

With drones, Ludwig's convinced that “this is the start of something that is going to launch many industries. They're using it in agriculture.

NASA's using it. The list goes on and on.”

He added the amount of great uses for drones “far outnumbers the few negative things (like fear of privacy invasion) that you hear about.”

“I think they (drones) are going to be around for some time,” Ludwig concluded.

LJHS athlete finds perspective in life

By ED PIPER Jr. Abby Ward can have a frozen, even frantic look on her face when she is madly trying to navigate a press applied by La Jolla High’s basketball opponents in the full court.

Meanwhile, at the CIF diving finals last spring – her first trip to the championship in her novice year of jumping off the board – she wore a serene and smiling expression in the heat of competition.

How could that be?

“It was my first year in diving,” explains the senior, relaxing on the family sofa before fall classes resume, yards away from the backyard pool where three friends and she cooked up the idea to try out for diving just before the season. “There were no expectations. And, I did it with friends.”

Classmates Molly Saraspe, who with Ward qualified for the CIF finals at Mesa College, Kate Miller, and Vanessa Itkowich, conspired with Abby – the four all juniors at the time – to try something none of them had done and to add something to their college applications.

“It was just a joke at first,” relates Ward. “And there were no tryouts,” so none of the quartet of friends was going to get cut from the team.

Lo and behold, Saraspe and Ward did a creditable job at CIF, and Ward, at least, plans to go out for diving again to finish her senior year next spring. “Oh, yeah,” she says when asked, without hesitation.

There’s another recent activity that went well and that is close to the 17-year-old’s heart. Supported by a loving family, including her mother Marybeth and father Bryan and four siblings, she recently

returned from a mission trip to Peru with 18 fellow youth and five adults to minister to needy children in the capital city of Lima. The poverty was real, but more impactful, Abby says, was the fact the youth from the U.S. could truly connect with the kids over the two weeks of the trip.

“I loved going,” she says convincingly. “We played with the kids all day, then were going to their school and teaching them English. There were five people (both youth and adults) in our group who spoke Spanish, so we felt like we could really communicate with the kids.

“What was fulfilling was how grateful they were. Feeling that your trip was worth it. We finished a community center, and worked on a medical clinic. We were told that

these would benefit 15,000 people.”

Perspective. This word and concept come up multiple times in conversation with Abby as she reflects on her past year, and looks forward to her last year in school before college (which she hopes will be at BYU, though UCSB and Cal Poly SLO are on her list, too.) The connection she made with the children in Lima meant something deeper to her.

Gaining perspective has also had to do with how she has planned out her senior year. She took two Advanced Placement classes her junior year, which is not onerous. But the work involved still demands a large chunk of time, and with family, faith, sports, and friends to juggle, she’s not going to repeat a similar schedule this year.

Ward isn’t slacking off. She holds four-year college clearly in her sights for next year, with a November application deadline for BYU. Instead, she views the alteration in class schedule as getting more balance. “Hopefully, I’ll have an easier schedule,” she says, “with (time for) friends, do sports.”

“When students take five AP classes, they end up stressed out” and not enjoying their high school experience, she says. “This year I’ll only have five periods. I’ll be able to come home (she drives herself), and when I’m in sports, I’ll have time before practice after school.”

“We as a family enjoy sports,” says Marybeth, Abby’s mother. Nolan, who is 14, is going to try out for the Viking golf team in the spring. As if on cue, mom is carrying a basketball as she passes through during the interview.

When informed after the interview that her player is an excellent ambassador for her program, for the school, and for young people in general, La Jolla High girls basketball coach Darice Carnaje replies by email, “That is great to hear. I’m a lucky coach to have her on the team.”

Ward, though not an elite athlete, is a hard worker who is pretty essential to Carnaje’s offense and defense to be on the floor, along with fellow guard Rebecca Saul. The two are scrappers who maximize their contributions to the team by sharing bringing the ball up court against the press on offense, and playing feisty defense at the other end of the parquet.

The 5-foot 4-inch tall student athlete would seem to be the dreamteam member a coach would want to have on her squad. Ward says she stays pretty focused in practice – ”I try to take what I learn in practice and apply it in the game” – and

though her good friend Miller is a teammate, she isn’t inclined to joke around with her during Carnaje’s practices.

Carnaje’s team in her first year moving over from more than a decade at Our Lady of Peace achieved more than it had a right to expect before the season, in view of the roster and the inexperience of the girls who populated that roster.

Repeatedly, in games against superior opponents and even at later points in what appeared to be lost games, players on the bench were still shouting encouragement to their teammates and standing up to slap them on the back.

It seemed more than a coach-mandated “you better be picking one another up” kind of thing. Another reason the mutual support among team members was convincing was that Carnaje models the same positive stance: standing throughout the game, enthusiastically clapping and shouting instructions to her players on the floor, while in the huddle affirming the good and focusing on what needs to be done rather than running a player down for making a mistake.

Ward would seem to be a prime receptacle for this positivity. In a lengthy, hour-and-a-half interview, she shows herself to be respectful, engaged, but not attempting to impress or to try to be someone she is not. The dynamic in interviews of high school student athletes with a sexegenarian reporter they only know from seeing him take photos at the games can vary quite a bit.

Abby shows herself to be humble, real, and unassuming as far as relating what it’s like to be a rising senior from what seems to be, from all indications, a happily grounded family.

La Jolla’s Mossmer wins Girls’ 16s USTA National Championships title It was a day to remember for fourth-seeded Nicole Mossmer on Aug. 14. The 16-year-old from La Jolla defeated 17th-seeded Julia Haynes of the San Diego community of Rancho Bernardo 7-5, 6-0 to capture the Girls’ 16s singles title at the USTA National Championships.

Mossmer earned a USTA gold ball and a wild card into the main draw of the junior girls’ event of the upcoming US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

“It felt so good. I’ve been looking forward to this tournament all year. It feels amazing to win a USTA gold ball and a US Open junior wild card in the same day. It couldn’t get any better,” Mossmer said. “I’m so excited because I get to go to New York. I’ve never played at the US Open. It’s going to be my first time.”

Bakelite in the Age of Plastics at the Women’s Museum of California Fashion Files

“Bakelite in the Age of Plastics” is a phenomenal exhibit at the Women’s Museum of California located in Liberty Station. The show will run until Aug. 28 and features many Bakelite items from local collectors and even some for sale.

The retro trend has made them highly collectible. Fashionistas love to wear the jewelry such as carved bracelets, and earrings. The show has a gorgeous cherry necklace made out of the Bakelite that was to-die-for.

In the ’20s Coco Chanel used the bracelets in her costume jewelry collection and Elsa Schiaparelli used the jewelry and also Bakelite buttons on dresses. During the Great Depression people’s spirits were

uplifted wearing the Bakelite. It simply brightened one’s day and was affordable to more and more consumers who were previously unable to afford these fashions.

Bakelite was made in 1907 by Belgian-American chemist Leo Baekeland. It was marketed as “The Material of A Thousand Uses” and is an indestructible product that is resistant to heat and chipping. The American Catalin Corporation acquired Bakelite in 1927. They were able to come up with lighter colors and techniques in marbling.

Historian Darlene G Davies curated the exhibit. Davies gave an exuberant lecture on the history and development of Bakelite. The crowd was mesmerized by this informative presentation. Davies said her favorite section in the exhibition was the kitchen scene that featured Bakelite utensils such as the handle of knifes, forks, spoons, and several appliances. Be sure to not miss

The 30th Annual Fur Ball Gala was held at the San Diego Campus for Animal Care on Aug. 13. A Red Carpet was rolled out and guests arrived with their dogs. The pooches were all dressed to the nines showing off their doggy evening wear.

The Emcee for the event was CBS News 8’s Barbara–Lee Edwards.

The Gala co-chairs were Colleen Blackmore Reilly & Charna Sugar.

During the cocktail hour everyone was able to mix and mingle with his or her favorite doggie. A step-and– repeat was set up for everyone to take home a fun keepsake picture.

By Robert G. soot and read Rogers it. I thought it was the greatest book I’d ever read and decided then and there that when I grew up, I wanted to write books like that. A reader could have the adventure with the main character, not get dirty or hurt, and when the book was closed, the reader would be relaxed and feel like he’d had a cheap vacation in an exotic place.

He could get a good night’s sleep without body parts or pools of blood floating around in his psyche.

I decided I didn’t need to wait until I grew up. So, I climbed on top of my Mama’s hen house with a pad of paper we got from school and began to write a knock off of Robinson Crusoe. I was about two pages into it when I heard a “thump, thump, thump” coming up behind me. I didn’t have to look, I knew it was Mama. When she got angry about something, she didn’t take time to put on her shoes and that was how she sounded coming across the field.

The sounds stopped and I heard her say, “Robert Gene, did you pick them butter beans yet?”

Trying to be cool, I said, over my shoulder, “No, Mama, I ain’t picked them butter beans yet. I’m writing a great American novel. I’ll pick them butter beans t’rectly.”

Well, my mama didn’t care a bit about my great American novel, she cared about her butter beans. She snatched me off that hen house and we had freshly picked butter beans

for supper that night. I ate mine standing up. My mama had a strong right hand.

Nevertheless, my decision to write was made and some years later, when my two young daughters asked me for a bed time story, I said, “Why don’t I tell you an adventure story about the three of us.”

They liked the idea so much that I fictionalized myself to be about their ages and we had a Tom Sawyer kind of adventure searching for a lost Indian treasure in the swamps.

Years later, I wrote the book and called it, Lost Indian Gold.

I also wrote two other books before I settled in to write murder mysteries. The first one, Jodie Mae, is a fictionalized account of my early days. The second, Runt Wade, I wrote to document scams I’d run into while working for lenders and the FDIC. At the time a story was making the rounds about the CIA selling drugs on the street to fund their clandestine wars. So, I threw

money laundering for the CIA into the book. I also wanted to show that there was some good in everybody.

Finding it in Runt Wade, a complete sociopath, was a challenge, but I did find it. He loved his mother and a Vietnamese girl. Unfortunately for him, the girl loved somebody else.

Finally I came to a time when all I had to do was write. That was when I made the decision to write murder mysteries. I was living in Mississippi so I wrote five Bishop Bone murder mysteries set there, each involving a murder in a Mississippi industry or culture or both.

I moved back to California after my wife died and wrote a sixth Bishop Bone murder mystery, The La Jolla Shores Murders. As with most mysteries, there were a number of suspects, a burglary ring, a homeless man on drugs, a holistic doctor, a company manufacturing medical implants and a love gone wrong.

A second murder mystery was also set in La Jolla, The Christian

Detective. An attorney who had hit the skids and needed help getting up and found it, accidentally in a Bible given to him by a street evangelist heavily engaged in African missionary work. A lady with whom he’d had an affair was apparently accidentally killed by a hit and run driver. The attorney was desperate to find out who had done it. What he found was much more. Not only that, he found his life was at risk.

I am finishing a third book set in La Jolla, The La Jolla Lawyer. It involves a political campaign, drug addiction, competition in a television news room. The plot is driven by a fictionalized account of the aftermath of a criminal trial similar to the Broderick trial some years ago and a jilted lawyer.

El Pescador Fish Market: It’s not Seattle’s Pike Place, but not for lack of fresh fish

I've been to La Jolla's El Pescador Fish Market & Restaurant many times, except for it's not called El Pescador, and it's not in La Jolla. It's in downtown Seattle's Public Market Center, where you can get fresh fish at the crack of dawn and watch the fishmongers intrepidly ply their trade all day at the renowned Pike Place Market.

The facility, which opened in 1907, hosts 10 million visitors annually and is the 33rd most popular tourist attraction on the globe.

Pike's spot in the public mind is actually one of the things that makes a visit to our El Pescador so cool. El Pescador (Spanish for "the fisherman") isn't open until late morning, and maybe it doesn't command such world-beating attendance – but like Pike, the market is definitely the message here, adorning the Village with a splash of authentic seagoing color. Staff hawk and sell daily-caught fare behind gleaming glass counters as the briny air beckons you to a meal at your counter seat.

The thought of eating swordfish almost denigrates the animal's place in sea monster lore – but El Pescador's Pacific swordfish sandwich makes quick work of your second thoughts.

Fished off southern California from May to December and western Baja the

rest of the year, this is as tasty a local favorite as you'll find amid beds of lettuce, tomato and green and red onion. Swordfish meat is also surprisingly hearty as seafood goes, and that's where you come in. Every bite stays intact and flavorful, inspiring one blogger to dub this entry "the other steak."

Clam chowder has found its way into dining circles as something of a Friday favorite. If you miss out the other six days at El Pescador, you have no one to blame.

Here, the entry actually resembles soup, the way it oughta – not like the canned stuff, whose broth mingles with the fish so as to render each element indistinguishable. Good clam chowder is an experience, not a condiment. The stuff at El Pescador is a case in point.

There are more than 50 soups, salads, sandwiches and plates on the menu for your char-grilled and sautéed pleasure, along with a modest assortment of drinks (try the Mexican Coke!) -- but as with Seattle's Pike Place, the market is king. It's been part of the restaurant since its original days in 1974 Del Mar, when 19-year-old surfer and entrepreneur Jeff Norris decided that fresh seafood was the way to go.

Two years later, he and a friend had created a complete seafood deli; the rest is history, as El Pescador has never stopped growing. Its current Pearl Street address, occupied since 2013, measures 3,000 square feet, nearly three times the old; the venue is open every night until 9, assuring you of time to shop ever after dinner.

Seattle has its many, many virtues, and the fish market there is one of the most scenic in the world -- but it's 19 hours away by car, and rain bedevils the city the way your mom bedevils you. Meanwhile, chances are overwhelming that the sun shines over El Pescador, where a big-city landmark is replicated in big-city measure.

Thought-provoking questions Often, when I am booked for lectures or radio and television interviews, I am provided questions

1. What are three principles you live by? a) “Identify the fear and then go there.” Usually I'm afraid because it is something I have never done before, and so I figure I will at least learn something new. I always ask myself: What is the worst-case scenario? If it’s one I can deal with, I go for it. b) “Not everything worth doing is worth doing well.” Being stuck striving for perfection will not allow you to move on. For me, this pertains to writing. It is never finished and can always be improved upon. But at some point, it must be abandoned. Of course, this does not apply to everything; be sure to use discernment. c) “Maintain an open mind.” I try to not be judgmental or assume that I know best. I listen and attempt to understand other points of view, seeing them in the contexts of culture and personality. When presented with a new opportunity, I ask myself: Will I learn something?

2. Do you believe nature or nurture has more impact?

People are born with specific tendencies; some children are shy, some are outgoing. This is a natural component of our genes, but then life experiences also impact our brains. Successes can reinforce behavior while failures discourage future attempts. So it is both. First it is nature, then nurture. Both have an equal influence.

3. What do you wish you knew then that you know now?

I wish I had not cared so much about what other people thought of me. As women, we try to please others more than necessary. Speak the truth as often as possible and be willing to be disliked, but respected.

4. What did you wish to be when you were a child?

My childhood dream was to be a poet. I won a poetry contest for a poem I wrote when I was eight. This early success inspired me to continue writing poems, which I still do today.

5. What role does luck play in success?

Obviously, luck plays a part—you have to be at the right place, at the right time, with the right people. However, success is also “opportu-

nity meeting preparation.” I am always scanning my environment to look for ways to make a contribution and a difference.

6. What are the barriers to female leadership?

“MEN!” There is still gender discrimination, both conscious and unconscious, even by wellmeaning men. Our culture continues to be dominated by male values, and, in the majority of cases, even when shown the same resume with a male or female name, men are chosen over women for both promotions and as new hires.

7. What was your biggest challenge? a) Acceptance. As the only woman on the faculty of a business school, the first woman in a Rotary Club, the only female consultant in all-male organizations, I faced issues of acceptance. I did not try to blend in, as I knew this was not possible, so I stood out by wearing red suits, sitting on the arms of chairs to make me look taller (I am barely 5 feet tall). b) A close second was being ignored—not only feeling invisible, but, also, not heard, and (when earned) not rewarded.

8. What changes in the workplace would you like to see?

I would like to see flexible working hours as a norm at work. This would permit time off not only for child-related needs, but, also, for the increasing needs of aging parents. Men must be provided with the same opportunity to take an equal share of these responsibilities without negative consequences in the workplace. What do you attribute your success to?

The willingness to ask the first question, using an assertive voice, looking others in the eye while conversing, giving credit when credit is due, looking and sounding confident (even when I do not feel that way), being well-prepared by knowing the agenda and relevant facts, and lastly, believing in myself.

9. What are the three rules you live by? a) First of all, have fun. b) Do no harm. c) Be as helpful to as many people as possible.

I am urging you, my readers, to do the same.

Think of each question as it relates to you, your values, philosophies, experiences, your life overall. Take time to answer these questions honestly and you might gain new insights—perhaps discover some unconscious motivations.

The next time you visit your family doctor when you suffer from cold or flu symptoms to get him or her to prescribe an antibiotic, think twice!

A single antibiotic course given for what almost always is a viral infection, can alter the bacteria in your intestines for weeks and often months to come.

Why is that important?

Well, recent research has focused on the importance of intestinal bacteria on a person’s immune status and overall health. The human body is home to trillions of bacteria, outnumbering one’s cells by a factor of 10. Most of these bacteria reside in the intestines and are called microbiota, or gut flora. The bacteria making up the gut flora are not merely “tenants,” they serve a variety of functions in maintaining one’s health. The byproducts of their metabolism influence are not only critical for proper bowel function, but have also an affect on the brain. An altered gut flora can disrupt the blood brain barrier and lead to cognitive and behavioral disturbances.

Factors affecting one’s microbiota start at birth and differ depending whether it is natural childbirth versus a cesarean section. With normal vaginal delivery the maternal flora is acquired. In contrast, cesarean delivery delays the development of the gut microbiota and the infant is more prone to allergic diseases such as asthma.

Likewise early exposure to antibiotics (antibiotics disrupt the bacterial flora) within the first two years of life predicts a higher likelihood of becoming obese and developing diabetes later in life. Breastfeeding, by providing the baby with bifidobacteria and prebiotics via the breast milk, helps to develop an optimal gut microbiota.

Ingredients: 1 1/4 cup green or brown lentils 1 cup Basmati rice 3 medium brown onions, halved and thinly sliced 1 1/2 cups water 2 tsp of salt 1 tsp ground cumin 1/4 cup of olive oil plus 2 TBL Preparation: Wash and rinse the lentils, add water and 1 tsp. of salt. Bring to a boil in a covered saucepan for 12 to 15 minutes until lentils have softened, but still are firm. Drain and set aside.

The biodiversity of the gut flora changes over time and can increase susceptibility to diseases, especially in the elderly. This can lead to overgrowth of so-called bad bacteria such as Clostridium Difficile, with often serious consequences.

Most of the bacteria in the gut belong to two groups called Firmicutes, the bad bacteria and Bacteroidetes, the good bacteria. An overgrowth of the Firmicutes is associated with obesity, since they process mostly fat, causing more calories to be absorbed. In contrast, the Bacteroidetes are important for the digestion of carbohydrates and protein.

A person’s diet is the key factor to a diverse and healthy microbiota or gut flora. The Western diet, being high in sugars, saturated fats and refined carbohydrates while low in fiber, results in a disturbance of the gut flora due to a reduction in the diversity of the bacterial flora. The typical Western diet favors the Firmicutes resulting in obesity, fatty liver and heart disease.

On the other hand a Mediterranean diet favors the good bacteria

not burn. Transfer to a plate lined with paper towels Wipe the pan and add 2 TBL of olive oil, heat, then add rice, remaining salt and cumin and stir to coat. Add the cooked lentils and the 1 1/2 cups of water. Bring to a boil, cover with a lid and simmer for 15 minutes on low heat. Remove from the heat, lift off the lid and quickly cover the pan with a clean towel. Seal tightly with the lid and let sit for 5 to 10 minutes.

After that remove the lid and towel, fluff the mixture with a fork and work half of the sautéed onion into it. Pile the dish into a serving bowl and top with the remaining onions. This dish is also good reheated, prepared on the weekend it can be used for several meals during the week, serves 8 to 10 people. It provides plenty of fiber, at least 8 grams per serving, as well as complete protein from the lentils and rice.

The Mediterranean type of diet not only promotes good health it can also actually restore the gut flora by providing the body with natural fiber which acts as a prebiotic. A prebiotic is fiber that is incompletely digested by the intestine however the bacteria in the lower intestine are able to digest the remainder.

Probiotics on the other hand, consist of Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria that support the beneficial gut flora. It is best derived from foods such as yogurt rather than supplements which are unreliable and vary widely in efficacy.

In summary, for optimal health it appears that having a diverse gut flora can be achieved with a healthy diet and lifestyle.

From My Garden: Losing our flowering peach tree By LINDA MARRONE My favorite tree in our garden was a magnificent flowering peach tree that was truly the centerpiece of the garden, especially in the spring when she would burst into graceful bloom with masses of huge pink blossoms that covered her twisted arched branches.

This coming spring will not be the same because after almost 30 years of bringing such pleasure to our lives and to those who pass by our garden, our beloved tree died. Over the past two years, I noticed that she was in decline and only a quarter of the tree bloomed this past spring. By summer, the few leaves she produced withered and eventually died. This month we had no choice but to take her out of the garden she was such an important part of and it was like loosing an old friend.

When we purchased our home in 1987, the tree was infested with termites and we were told to take her out of the garden. I ignored the advice of the "experts" and instead decided to learn more about the tree and see what I could do to save her. The first thing I did was turn off the sprinkler system that was spraying her trunk with water and causing it to rot. We also used some unorthodox treatments on her to kill the pests and after awhile she began to thrive once again and thanked us each spring with a vibrant display of beautiful blossoms.

The first person we hired to care for all our old-growth trees was Michael Moore who was an expert at trimming and lacing trees. Michael told me that he used to visit our garden as a boy and watched noted local arborist Singen trim the trees and shrubs.

Singen later trained Michael in the art of tree lacing and shaping. Singen was considered a master and you could tell by the beautifully arched shape of the flowering peach that someone had lovingly worked with her over the course of many years.

We are not sure how old the flowering peach tree actually was, but my former neighbor told me that the tree was mature when she purchased her home next door in 1963. In those days there were two flowering peach trees in the garden, a white one that was located closer to the front yard and the pink one behind it. We were

told that the white tree died in the early 1980s.

Flowering peach trees do not have a long life expectancy, especially here in Southern California near the beach were they will only live 20 to 25 years or less. We believe that our tree was about 70 years old when she died, which was well beyond her normal life expectancy.

After doing research on flowering peach trees I found that the "Early Double Pink Flowering Peach" seems to closely resemble our tree. A flowering peach tree is hybridized for its flowers and not for its fruit, so all the energy goes into producing their extra large showy flowers. While they do produce fruit it is very small and virtually inedible, but it does produce a seed or pit, some of which I planted and are now "baby" flowering peach trees.

Even though our flowering peach tree was the unquestionable "queen" of the spring garden, I will miss her beauty each season. Here in La Jolla where we have endless sunshine and mild weather throughout the year it can be difficult to identify which season it is, but our faithful tree always reminded us.

After her breathtaking display of spring blossoms faded, a canopy of green leaves would appear and shade the garden from the hot summer sun.

By autumn, her leaves would turn a golden hue, fall and blanket the garden floor. During the winter we would enjoy the bare architecture of her weather-worn gnarled trunk and branches that would tell us the holiday season was right around the corner.

I saved a large branch from the tree and it is hollowed out and houses several varieties of bromeliads. We placed the branch under our 80 foot Podocarpus tree and it looks right at home. This winter I plan to purchase a 15 gallon "Early Double Pink Flowering Peach" and plant her where her predecessor once stood. With care and careful training I hope that someday she will grow and become the new queen of the garden.
