RIDING THE WAVES Surfing legends will hang ten in La Jolla for the UCSD Moores Cancer Center Luau and Longboard Invitational BY MARIKO LAMB | VILLAGE NEWS The 18th annual Luau and Longboard Invitational, sponsored for the fourth year in a row by Pfizer La Jolla, is back again on Aug. 21 with its not-so-blacktie fundraising event to benefit UCSD Moores Cancer Center. Proceeds from the event will go to the center’s cancer prevention programs, medical oncology trials, radiation oncology and social worker programs for patients. The day of fun in the sun will begin at 7 a.m. with a surf contest at the beach by Scripps Pier. Each company-sponsored team of four will be joined by a longboard legend ranging from world champions and founders of the sport to surf celebrities from “Endless Summer,” “Endless Summer II” and “Big Wednesday.” Following the surf contest, a luau will kick off with the blowing of a conch shell and Polynesian dance presentation on the beach. Guests will relocate to the Pawka Green at Scripps Institution of Oceanography where Waters Fine Catering will serve up a mouthwatering island buffet. Unique, health-conscious menu items include Asian fusion dishes such as a vegan Cantonese noodle dish and Korean barbeque. Young theater junkies get their fix with great deals at La Jolla Playhouse BY MARIKO LAMB | VILLAGE NEWS La Jolla Playhouse has launched two new programs this year to cater to art junkies, food and beverage connoisseurs and young theatergoers looking for a great deal. The playhouse’s “30 and Under” promotion gives patrons who are 30 years old and younger the opportunity to purchase specially priced $20 tickets to any playhouse production for the entire 2011/2012 season. “We’re always looking for new ways to attract younger audiences and introduce them to the exciting new work we’re doing at the Playhouse,” said Michael Rosenberg, managing director at the playhouse. “30 and Under is a great new initiative that offers affordable ticket prices for this key audience demographic.” Another promotion, “Foodie Friday,” is a pre-show party that was first launched in mid-July that features gourmet barbeque cuisine by Chop Soo-ey, sweet treats by Corner Cupcakes and a complimentary microbrew tasting by Stone Brewing Company for patrons 21 and older. A new addition to Foodie Friday is Devilicious, a San Diegobased food truck vendor featured on the Food Network’s upcoming season of the Great Food Truck Race that serves up sinfully delectable out-of-the-box eats like butter-poached lobster grilled cheese and a PB&J sandwich with cream cheese and bacon. “Foodie Fridays offers patrons a fun pre-show event featuring San Diego’s hottest new trend — food trucks,” Rosenberg said. The next Foodie Friday event will take place before the showing of “American Night” on Feb. 10. The playhouse’s current production, “Sleeping Beauty Wakes,” is a modern-day musical rendition of the classic fairy tale set in a sleep disorder clinic. The musical stars San Diego’s very own Aspen Vincent as Rose — a princess in a 900-year slumber who influences the dreams of the other patients in the clinic. Due to popular demand the production has been extended and will run at the La Jolla Playhouse until Aug. 28. To take advantage of the “30 and Under” program, use the promotional code “culturefix” at checkout. Proper identification must be shown at Will Call to pick up tickets. La Jolla Playhouse’s “30 and Under” deal is not available for Saturday evening performances. La Jolla Playhouse is located at 2910 La Jolla Village Drive. For more information about events or to purchase tickets, visit www.lajollaplayhouse.org or call (858) 550-1010.
