n the early 1900s, La Jollans sometimes became bored with the daily routines of rounding up abalone for dinner, collecting mail at the post office and sharing neighborhood gossip. Consequently, clubs and organizations with rather far-fetched and somewhat dubious characters took shape. The Rattlesnake Club, formed in 1921 with about a dozen members, was probably the most unusual with purposes both scientific and practical: observing rattlers in their natural environment, shooting a number of them and tanning their skins for future use as handbags and belts. The mission didn’t go far, as the club had dis-

banded in about a year, but the first field trip on Sept. 21 with the “Indian Trail above the Biological Grade” as the point of departure imparts its own special hilarity. A note from the Rattlesnake Club file elaborates: “Those assembled were President Burdick equipped with leggings and antidote, Mrs. Burdick with a yellow flag to catch the varmints teeth, Field Captain Peak with a long staff, 2 Misses Savages with short skirts and no leggings, Mrs. Lane in knickerbockers and low slippers, Mr. Lane looking slightly bored but wishing to be on hand in case of snake bites, Miss Lord late but enthusiastic, Wood field secretary with gun and other heavy armament.” The entourage soon became tired and disgruntled as no rattlesnakes were found until one SEE REFLECTIONS, Page 7

ayoral combatants Carl DeMaio and Bob Filner skirmished at a candidates’ debate on U.S.-Mexico relations Aug. 9 at UC San Diego’s Institute of the Americas. “The focus has been on the presidential election, but the reality is, what mayors do affect our lives every single day,” said institute president Charles Shapiro before the debate moderated by Tom Fudge of KPBS radio. “We have to make decisions. We do that through voting for a mayor.” DeMaio, a successful businessman and first-term Republican City Councilman wasted no time pointing out his strategy during opening remarks. “I’m running on a record of getting reform done,” he said. DeMaio said his administration would promote an “inclusiveness and diversity” of cultures while collaborating to achieve “prosperity on both sides of the border.”

Luau and Longboard Invitational to take to the waves once again Since its founding nearly two decades ago, the Luau and Longboard Invitational has raised more than $5 million to fund groundbreaking cancer research at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center. This year, the 19th annual event will honor Nobel laureate Roger Tsien — for whom the drive to help find a cure for cancer stems from personal experience. Tsien’s father battled prostate cancer and ultimately lost his life to pancreatic cancer. As a professor of pharmacology, chemistry and biochemistry at UC San Diego and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, Tsien has worked to develop a novel way to image and possibly even deliver specially targeted drugs to cancer tumors. Tsien has been named the 2012 recipient of the Rell Sunn Award — established in memory of Rell Sunn, a Hawaiian surfer and longtime Luau & Longboard Invitational supporter

who lost her battle with breast cancer — which will be presented during the event. Each year, an honoree who has displayed a strong will, unselfishness and compassion in the battle against cancer is selected for the award. The Longboard Invitational kicks off at 7 a.m. on Aug. 19 on the beach near the Scripps Pier in La Jolla. Company-sponsored teams of four will be paired with a longboard surf legend to compete in the surfing contest. The competition will be followed by the luau with live music from The Professors, Polynesian dancers, and live and silent auctions featuring one-of-a-kind surfboards, memorabilia and trips. For the fifth year in a row, Pfizer is the title sponsor of the unique fundraiser. As part of its

Filner, meanwhile, pointed to his experience as a former San Diego City Councilman and 20-year Congressman serving the San DiegoTijuana border region. “We have to confront some really tough issues and that’s not going to be done in one debate or one 30-second ad spot,” said Filner. “We need someone who has the experience and ability to move people forward. I have a record of doing that.” Both mayoral hopefuls sparred SEE DEBATE, Page 8

Unrelated to temperatures recorded on the hottest day of 2012 so far, roughly 4,600 San Diego Gas & Electric customers in La Jolla and Pacific Beach were left without power for several hours Aug. 12 after an outage was blamed on a failed connector between two cables, said an SDG&E official. The outage occurred about 5:15 p.m. and affected customers from Via Capri in La Jolla south to Pacific Beach and Mission Bay. The bulk of the power was restored by around 11 p.m., but a handful of customers were left without power until around 10:15 a.m. on Aug. 13, said the SDG&E spokesman. Other outages were reported in Ocean Beach and Point Loma on Aug. 12 as well. An investigation into the cause continues. — Kevin McKay
