Salk Institute among top North American scientific ‘stars’ in Nature Index Salk Institute ranks as one of the leading scientific “stars” in North America with high-quality output that has grown particularly fast, according to a new report by Nature Research.

The data, released July 27, in a report called the Nature Index, use a series of metrics related to papers published in the last few years to evaluate over 8,000 scientific institutions across the globe. The index, designed to be a tool for assessing research performance, charts which countries and institutions are the most efficient at producing highquality results based on publications in top-tier journals.

Salk Institute is listed among the top 25 institutions in all of North America in the “Regional Stars” section of the index, along with other esteemed centers such as Stanford University, the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the California Institute for Biomedical Research. These institutions dramatically increased their contribution to a selection of top natural science journals from 2012-2015.

The Nature Index uses three counts of article output: article

count (AC), which assigns a rank of one for each article that has at least one author from that institute; fractional count (FC), which takes into account the relative contribution of each author to an article; and weighted fractional count (WFC), which applies a weighting to frac-

tional count to adjust for the overrepresentation of papers from astronomy and astrophysics.

News City Council OKs plastic bag ban

No additional jail time for bank bribery

By NEAL PUTNAM A businessman who paid a $15,000 bribe to a La Jolla Bank manager, who demanded the fee so he could get a $1.8 million loan, has been ordered to pay $922,582 in restitution.

The restitution ordered for Annand Sliuman, 35, is for the original loan that he received and defaulted on following the failure of La Jolla Bank in 2010.

No additional jail time was ordered as Sliuman was given credit for several days in jail by U.S. District Court Judge Anthony Battaglia on terms of three year’s probation on July 18.

“Mr. Sliuman, you’re getting a big break, courtesy of the government,” said Battaglia as he mentioned the sentence included no jail time.

Sliuman pleaded guilty to bank bribery in 2014.

Battaglia set the monthly payment amount at $500 per month for Sliuman, whose attorney says he works 12-16 hours per day as a restaurant consultant.

Sliuman once operated a sushi restaurant in El Cajon and a Lakeside grocery store, but lost his businesses and Spring Valley home when he couldn’t pay the loan back.

There was also fallout after federal charges were issued of others connected with the failure of La Jolla Bank in 2010.

La Jolla Bank was taken over by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. after the bank ran up debt totaling $1 billion in 2010.

His attorney filed paperwork that said Sliuman only received $393,234 in the $1.8 loan because most of the loan went for various equipment lease payoffs, payoffs to two other loans, and a $15,000 payment to Amalia Martinez, 52, a bank manager at La Jolla Bank.

Martinez pleaded guilty to misapplication of bank funds, and she will be sentenced Aug. 22. Martinez faces up to five years in federal prison and remains free on $25,000 bond.

According to Sliuman’s attorney, Sliuman paid Martinez $10,000 as a loan to her in 2007, but he eventually learned she would never repay him back. Sliuman later paid her $15,000 in order to get another loan.

Lake Elsinore, was released Monday night after being sentenced to the 96 days he has already spent in jail. Both Ramirez and Karasoulas pleaded guilty to grand theft.

Both of them were ordered by San Diego Superior Court Judge Dan Link to not enter any stores owned by the Hollister Company or Abercrombie & Fitch as a condition of three years probation. They struck the La Jolla branches of those stores, according to court records.

Link ordered Ramirez and Karasoulas to pay $6,643 and $4,876, respectively, to the stores which lost clothing during the shoplifting sprees. The high-end clothing was sold at swap meets.

Link told Ramirez that since she had two prior misdemeanor theft convictions, the sentence for this offense “should be a huge wakeup call for you.”

She faces up to three years in prison if she violates probation conditions.

Deputy District Attorney Joseph Whang said several people at the clothing stores lost their jobs as a result of the thefts after the clothing was discovered for sale at swap meets. He said the store managers were held responsible for store inventory.

Attorneys for both defendants objected to a further restitution order of $5,004 which the department stores are seeking for investigative costs. A restitution hearing for this amount was set for Sept. 19.

A third co-defendant, Mario Andres Espinoza, 42, will be sentenced on Aug. 31. Espinoza, also known as Mario Esker, remains free on $20,000 bond.

The restitution amount for Espinoza was set at $1,767. He also pleaded guilty to grand theft.

The first documented theft was on Sept. 1, 2015 at the Abercrombie & Fitch at the UTC mall when Ramirez put 15 men’s polo-style shirts valued

at $29.95 each in her large black purse and left without paying for them.

Investigators discovered foil-lined bags surrounded the stolen clothing to prevent detection of merchandise security tags. Managers at several stores attempted to confront Ramirez and Karasoulas but they escaped each time.

Another theft was documented on Oct. 6, 2015 at the Hollister store at UTC when Ramirez put 18 clothing items valued at $449 inside a tan purse and left the store. Stores at Plaza Bonita mall in National City and in Los Cerritos were among the victims.

On May 4, Karasoulas was stopped by sheriff ’s deputies for speeding and weaving between lanes on Interstate 15 in his white van. Deputies discovered Karasoulas was driving on a suspended license and was in possession of 154 clothing items taken from the Hollister stores and Abercrombie & Fitch. Approximately $12,000 worth of clothing was found in Ramirez’s home in Chula Vista.

Despite a similar state measure on the November ballot, San Diego City Council July 19 voted 6-3 to approve a Plastic Bag Reduction Ordinance.

Dissenting votes were cast by council members Scott Sherman, Mark Kersey and Chris Cate.

San Diego's new plastic bag reduction ordinance includes a ban on all single-use carryout plastic bags at select point-ofsale retail locations and a 10cent charge for paper bags. The ordinance has exemptions for restaurants, newspaper delivery and bags for transporting produce, meat, poultry and drycleaning or laundry.

There is also a six-month grace period before ordinance enactment for pharmacy and grocery retail locations, and a one-year grace period for all others.

“San Diego can now take a leadership role in limiting plastic bag use and reducing plastic pollution,” said Sherri Lightner, First District Council person and Council President who proposed the measure. “As we can see from other cities, the benefits are real, and it can be done without burdening our businesses or our most vulnerable residents.”

Testimony was made during the July 19 council hearing that only 3 percent of the voluminous amount of single-use plastic bags used regularly by San Diegans ever gets recycled.

Dissenters on the Council questioned the timing — and need — for the new ordinance.

“I'm not sure I want to jump on the plastic bag bandwagon,” noted Sherman adding, “We need to start dealing (more) with laws to prevent litter and dumping, increasing fines and penalties so people think twice (before dumping).”

“This ordinance doesn't really solve or accomplish anything,” said Kersey pointing out the November statewide measure, which is expected to pass, would achieve the same goals.

He argued this ordinance constitutes “patchwork regulation.”

Noting she's an outdoor recreationalist, District 2 Council person Lorie Zapf said she fully supported the measure and its intent. She referenced wildlife increasingly being found with plastic in their digestive system because of all the plastic bags which end up polluting the ocean.

Parks and Beaches group opposes DecoBike in La Jolla

By DAVE SCHWAB In July La Jolla Parks and Beaches, Inc. approved two events — Concours d'Elegance in April and a December jazz festival — to be held in Ellen Browning Scripps Park in 2017.

The LJPB Board also sanctioned a letter drafted by chair Dan Allen to be sent to the city's Parks and Recreation Department opposing a proposal for DecoBike to extend its bike share stations into the Jewel.

“La Jolla Parks and Beaches does not support locating bike kiosks in La Jolla parkland or public areas,” said Allen's letter. “Our objection is to the city's bike share station location plan proposed by contractor DecoBike as presented to us, which

includes using grassy areas and adjacent parking spaces along Scripps Park in La Jolla.”

Allen also noted in his letter that LJPB voted 15-1 against having bike share in the community in April 2014.

Of the two community events which got the coastal advisory group's approval one, the annual Concourse classic-car show, now in its 12th year, is hosted by a local nonprofit group, the La Jolla Historical Society.

The second event, a jazz festival proposed to be held Dec. 2-4 at Scripps in 2017, is a first-time event hosted by an outside, for-profit group.

For some time, there has been a schism on the LJPB board between

members more- and less-inclined to allow Scripps Park to be commercialized and used by outside interests.

Some board members believe some portion of the park should always remain open, no matter what special events are scheduled there on any given day during the year.

Concours d'Elegance reps Michael Dorvillier and Laurel McFarlane presented a check to the LJPB board for $550, proceeds from a new charity program at this year's Concours during which promoters allowed those showing cars or attending the event to use a promotion code which donated a small portion of the cost of their ticket to a charity of their choice. In this case, the La Jolla parks group.

approved the Concours request, despite the fact that all of Scripps Park is used during the classic-car exhibition.

David Payne of RTE Productions, which produced San Diego Bayfest, pitched LJPB on bringing an upscale jazz festival to Scripps Park this winter. Payne has been making the rounds of La Jolla civic groups asking for their approval for the jazz fest.

In response, several LJPB board members expressed concern that allowing the park to be used by a commercial group for profit was setting a bad — and perhaps irreversible — precedent.

“I'm worried about the noise for the neighbors on three consecutive nights,” said LJPB member Sally Miller.

San Diego Airport to close Terminal 2 parking lot for new structure

By LAINIE FRASER San Diego International Airport plans to eliminate nearly 1,200 parking spaces in Terminal 2 next month to prepare for the construction of a new Parking Plaza with more parking and upgraded technology.

On Aug. 6, roughly 1,200 close-in parking spaces in Terminal 2 will be closed off and construction is scheduled to officially begin in September.

The 1,300 spaces in Terminal 2 will remain accessible to travelers as will the other 1,200 spaces in Terminal 1. The new plaza should be completed by 2018 and include 3,000 parking spaces and a variety of technological developments.

San Diego International has been in need of a parking upgrade for some time now. Analysis shows an increase in travel which results in an increase in the need for parking.

United Airlines, the third largest carrier in the airport, moved to Terminal 2 which increased the number of travelers as well as the demand for parking spaces.

Customer analysis has also shown that there is a lot of parking further from the airport but the distance is inconvenient and makes traveling and being on time a hassle.

After analyzing customer surveys the director of design and construction, Bob Bolton, determined there were a few things that needed to change at Lindbergh Field.

“Surveys show that the wifi in the airport is poor and that the close-in parking is not much better.”

With limited available space on the airport property, the plan is to build vertically to effectively and efficiently use the space. The new Parking Plaza will be 1 million square feet with three floors and 3,000 close-in parking spaces. These are spots that are deemed to be within reasonable walking distance from

The new parking structure is on a 20-month schedule and has an approved budget of $127.8 million.

Following the success of The Green Build in Terminal 2 in 2013, Bolton is confident this plan will be both on schedule and a success. The structure will introduce covered parking which currently does not exist at San Diego International. There will also be a cell phone application that will allow travelers to reserve parking spaces, pay in advance, find their parking space and find their car upon returning.

“This has been designed with safety features to help with the customer experience,” Bolton said. “We want people to feel safer and actually be safer. We want to make this a safe and functioning space for meeters, greeters and well wishers.”

The plaza will also have two public art opportunities for local artists.

There are teams of artists currently working with the architects and engineers to design installations that are expressive, helpful and promote safety.

To foster a safe environment the design includes well-lit areas and glass-back elevators. The plaza will also feature a view balcony that will be open to the public.

“Anyone can come and park or travelers can take a break and a selfie and enjoy the harbor and the sky-

line,” Bolton said.

“This is more than just a parking garage hence the plaza,” Bolton said. “We want to enhance the customer experience, increase demand, drive revenue and hopefully be able to fund and complete the renovation of Terminal 1 in the future.”

Jon David Guerrero, 39, made his first court appearance Tuesday after being charged with killing three homeless men and injuring two others and the prosecutor announced the death penalty may be sought if he’s convicted.

Guerrero’s attorney Dan Tandon, asked the arraignment be delayed until Aug. 2, and San Diego Superior Court Judge Fred Maguire granted it. Guerrero remains in jail without bail.

Guerrero was arrested Friday

by San Diego Police only an hour after the attack on a fifth homeless man occurred in Golden Hill by a man on a bicycle. Guerrero lived in downtown San Diego.

Deputy District Attorney Makenzie Harvey filed special circumstance charges that allege Guerrero committed multiple murders. She said the DA’s office has not yet decided whether to seek the death penalty or a life term in prison without parole if he’s convicted.

Guerrero was arrested after a police sketch was widely released that was based on a clerk’s observation of a man in a green hat buying a gas can from a service station. Surveillance camera footage of the man in the store was aired on television newscasts.

Court records show Guerrero was convicted of robbery of a homeless woman, 54, when he knocked her down twice and stole her bicycle in April, 2009.

He spent a year in jail on terms of three year’s probation, but when he faced a probation revocation hearing, a judge found him mentally incompetent.

Longtime La Jolla REBA executive director Anna Galloway dies at 89 Anna Galloway, the executive director and manager of the La Jolla Real Estate Brokers’ Association for decades beginning in 1968, and who retired in 2011 at the age of 89, died Sunday, July 10, at the San Antonio home of her friend, Retired Air Force Gen. The cause was cancer. She was 95.

We all have to have our basic needs met (food, water, shelter, sleep) in order to be able to focus on our higher needs.

We make life choices (such as marriage and careers) without being aware that we are trying to meet those higher aspirations.

Some people need to be visible, upfront, while others are more comfortable in the background, working behind the scenes. Certain individuals strive to be significant and make a contribution to their community; others prefer being private, unnoticed, fading into the woodwork. My father used to say “Pour vivre hereux, il faut vivre caché” (translated: to live happy we must live hidden). A Japanese proverb echoes the same sentiment: “The nail that sticks out shall be hammered down.” A generation ago humility was a virtue. A humble person was admired. These words are no longer in our vocabulary.

As a feminist in the 70s and 80s, I advocated for women to become more visible, encouraging them to have a voice. My 1980 book, Paths to Power: A Woman’s Guide from First Job to Top Executive did just that. As a man-

agement consultant, I encouraged women to wear red and stride with confidence as opposed to trying to blend into the male-dominated work culture.

What I have come to realize is that for some my advice was helpful in thinking outside the box; it provided women with the courage to strive for equality, recognition, and eventual success. However, for others getting out of their comfort zone was too unpleasant and even painful. One can opt for variety, change, growth, adventure, risk-taking or wish for certainty, predictability, and security. Some of this is in-born; some acquired through experience. These are needs that must be acknowledged and met. One choice is not necessarily better than the other.

For some people being connected to and working in groups or in a community is important; others are happy to be loners and do their best work when on their own.

People also possess different strengths. Some possess good self-control, while others are more spontaneous. Some see an event as optimistic; others only see the same event’s downside. Although optimists are often known to be healthier and live longer, pessimists are often more rooted to reality. Some people are better at self-reflection, which is what I am promoting here. Becoming aware of one’s needs and strengths should help in making decisions about the choices

(when within our control) in one’s life.

Besides getting to understand our needs and strengths, we are also influenced by our life’s purpose and meaning. How strongly do we feel attachment to our family, our work, our values, and our community? We all have limited time to devote to any of these options. How do we choose?

When children are small, there is often no choice but to take care of their needs—such as schools or doctors’ visits, but we do have a choice whether we spend time reading to them or reading for our own pleasure. Our work also requires us to decide how much time will be spent on projects— for some it is “good enough as is,” for others, “perfection” is the only option.

Commitment to our values, faiths, and philosophies also take time, such as attending religious or political meetings. How much time we devote to these areas is often a matter of the strengths of our convictions.

Finally, there is the time given to our community, be it volunteer work, leisure and social activities, or being a good neighbor. Whatever we chose to dedicate our time to is at the detriment of another choice. I remember when I was getting my master’s in social work while my children were teenagers—it was a matter of finishing my report of helping them with theirs, bringing work on vacations as opposed to going on a hike with the family…all are conflicting choices that need to be made daily, sometimes hourly. How we decide is determined by our levels of commitment as well as our needs and strengths—it is all interconnected and is an expression of who we are.

So pay attention to your choices and make sure that they conform to your image of self, not only as you are, but as you wish to be. It is only when you become conscious of the choices you make, not by default or pressure from others, but because you responded to your inner core: “This is what I need.

These are my strengths. This is what is important to me. This is who I am!”

Former coach gets jail time for sex with minor

By NEAL PUTNAM A former gym coach who had sex with a 15-year-old girl at La Jolla Shores was sentenced Wednesday to one year in jail and must register as a sex offender for life.

Patrick Jay Wehrung, 25, was given credits of already serving 132 days and his projected release date was set for Nov. 21, according to the

sheriff ’s department.

San Diego Superior Court Judge Dan Link placed him on three years probation and sternly warned him not to have any contact with her again.

“If you dare to contact her while you’re on probation, you will get prison,” said Link. “Do not have contact with her. This relationship is done,” said Link.

The judge and Deputy District

Attorney Nicole Roth both noted Wehrung was jailed May 27 after he sent an Instagram message to her in violation of his release conditions.

Wehrung had been free on $80,000 bond after his Feb. 9 arrest by San Diego Police.

House arrest and work furlough were ruled out by Link as options.

He was fined approximately $1,500.

Wehrung pleaded guilty to

unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, oral copulation with a minor, and digital penetration of a juvenile.

He could have received five years and four months in prison.

“I don’t think you fully understand,” said Link to Wehrung. “One of her first sexual experiences is now confined to you. She’s been affected dramatically.”

Link told Wehrung that because

the girl was 15 years old, she could not consent to sex legally. Wehrung, wearing jail clothing, said nothing.

He met the 15-year-old girl at Champion Gymnastics & Cheer, a gym in Santee where he used to work. He was fired after his arrest.

All of the sexual activity took place at La Jolla Shores.

Montana convicted of attempted murder of CBS’ Kyle Kraska

After 5 ½ hours of deliberations Wednesday, a jury convicted a house painter of pre-meditated attempted murder of CBS sports director Kyle Kraska and making a death threat against the manager of the San Diego Rowing Club in Mission Beach.

Mike Montana, 55, of El Cajon, stood up with his attorney to hear the verdicts but showed little reaction in San Diego Superior Court.

Kraska, who was shot six times in his Mercedes on Feb. 10, 2015, was in the courtroom audience and put his head in his hands. Kraska, who has worked for KFMB-TV (Channel 8) since 1999, walked away afterward without comment.

The eight-man, four-woman jury also convicted Montana of firing into an occupied vehicle and making a death threat to a worker at the Department of Motor Vehicles in 2014.

The jury found Montana personally used a handgun when he shot Kraska and his car, which means he

Billionaire businessman and philanthropist Conrad Prebys dead at 82 High-profile San Diego businessman and philanthropist Conrad Prebys, who donated generously to the zoo and educational and medical facilities, among others, died Sunday, July 24 following a battle with cancer.

Prebys' philanthropy made his name nearly ubiquitous in San Diego, from a major cardiovascular care center in La Jolla to a student union at San Diego State University and a major exhibit at the San Diego Zoo. His name also adorns the San-

ford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute in La Jolla.

"I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Conrad Prebys, a dear friend and a steadfast supporter of UC San Diego for many years,” said UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K Khosla. “Conrad touched so many lives through his generosity and kindness, and has left a lasting impact on our campus, our community and our world. “We will miss him immensely and cherish his legacy,” continued Khosla. “From his support that created the Conrad Prebys Music Center at UCSD to his philanthropic gifts that benefited health sciences and many other fields and organizations, he improved the quality of life of our campus and community members and forever changed the landscape of San Diego."

Of Prebys, Mayor Kevin Faulconer said, “Through his enormous generosity and deep kindness, Conrad Prebys changed San Diego for the better time and time again. His long list of philanthropic pursuits — from scientific research to arts and culture to college scholarships — have left an indelible mark on countless lives and will continue to do so for generations to come. He will forever be known as one of San Diego's finest.''

San Diego State University (SDSU) President Elliot Hirshman said Prebys “touched and ennobled'' everyone he met, adding his “contagious optimism and selfless generosity have forever changed our campus and the entire San Diego region.''

“His name and his legacy will live on at San Diego State University in the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student

Union, the thousands of students who will receive Conrad Prebys' scholarships, the Conrad Prebys Center for Viromics Research and the Conrad Prebys Chair for Biomedical Research,'' Hirshman said.

“The entire San Diego State University community mourns the loss of a treasured friend and supporter.''

Raised in a working-class neighborhood of South Bend, Ind., Prebys developed a heart condition at the age of 8 that forced him to adopt a more sedentary lifestyle, so he learned to play piano and developed an appreciation of the arts. He later graduated from Indiana University and made a fortune in real estate and construction.

Over the span of more than four decades, Prebys had a successful career as a real estate developer and property manager in San Diego,

with a focus on affordable housing.

Named one of the 25 most generous people in the world by Business Insider in 2012, Prebys made a wide-ranging impact with philanthropic giving in areas ranging from education and the arts, to health sciences and medicine, to wildlife preservation.

At UCSD, Prebys made a significant impact on the Department of Music, establishing the world-class Conrad Prebys Music Center, as well as the Conrad Prebys Music Endowment, with gifts totaling $9 million.

The Conrad Prebys Concert Hall, one of the world’s best small concert halls situated within the Conrad Prebys Music Center, was also named in his honor to recognize his generosity.

where she met such notable world figures as Aristotle Onassis, whom she described as “charming” and “very nice,” adding, “I understood why Jackie was attracted to him.”

After arriving in the United States, Anna was catering manager at the Sheraton Palace Hotel in San Francisco. She moved on to the El Mirador Hotel during the heyday of Palm Springs, where she met luminaries such as Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Walt Disney and U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

In 1964, Anna met her future husband, Clark Galloway, and together they moved to San Francisco where she sold real

estate not knowing that would foreshadow her future with REBA. Moving to La Jolla in 1968, Ana finally found herself “where the oranges grow.”

Clark passed away 10 years ago.

Even though Anna was the executive director of REBA, nothing was beneath her. Many mornings she could be found in front of the REBA building at 908 Kline St., sweeping down the public sidewalk and walkways to the building. One rainy morning, past REBA president Pat Park recalled, the roof leaked terribly and Anna rushed to position buckets strategically around the meeting room.

Current board member Sally Whitney was a little girl who hung around the REBA office waiting for her Realtor parents, who said Anna (who never had children) was very loving

As word spread of Galloway's death among current and past members of REBA, friends and colleagues remembered Anna as the backbone of the organization, running the operation with the precision and high standards that German culture is known for. However, under that veneer of strict adherence to the rules beat a heart of gold, particularly when it came to helping new REBA members get started in the business.

Current REBA president, Jeff Nunn, of Coldwell Banker, echoed the feelings of the membership that she held herself to the highest standards and never wavered from her moral compass.

Anna is survived by her sister in Sweden and her friend, McBroom.

Most recently, Prebys established the Conrad Prebys Presidential Chair in Music — the first endowed faculty chair in the Department of Music — to support scholarly activity and graduate fellowships. Prebys supported a variety of campus areas including Moores Cancer Center and Jacobs Medical Center at UC San Diego Health, as well as The Preuss School UCSD. Rand Steiger, chair of the Department of Music and holder of the Conrad Prebys Presidential Chair in Music, shared Prebys’ love of music and inspired him to support the university’s programs.

Steiger said, “Mr. Prebys was an incredibly generous and humble man. He made a fortune by building apartment complexes that were well maintained and rented at reasonable rates, and he continued to live quite modestly even

after he became a billionaire. He gave away hundreds of millions of dollars to many organizations, and the UC San Diego Music Department is among those that have benefited from his largesse.”

“When he spoke at the opening of the Conrad Prebys Music Center, he talked about how lucky he felt to be able to help us with such an exciting project,” Steiger continued.

“The last time I visited with Mr. Prebys it was at his office — a very small room located in one of his apartment complexes. The office had a modest desk and a couch that had clearly seen better days. I would later learn that the couch was the one he’d slept on when he first moved to San Diego, and he kept as a reminder of his early struggles and humble origins. I feel fortunate to have known him and very sad to say goodbye. Generations of students will benefit from his gifts to us, and here at UC San Diego, as in the city more broadly, he will not be forgotten.”

Let the races begin: Opening Day hats and fashion at Del Mar races Fashion Files

Racing fans were excited as ever for the Opening Day of the 77th summer racing season at Del Mar on Friday, July 15. This was the first time in 46 years that that the summer opener was on a Friday. Attendance this year was up and totaled 42,562 race goers. Everyone arrived with two things in mind: hats and horses.

All the racegoers came well dressed, as this is San Diego’s biggest fashion event of the year. People come to be seen and show off their beautiful hats. There were more men this year wearing coordinated outfits that were topped off with stylish hats. They were very fashion forward.

Some women opted to wear fascinators and others choose to wear a traditional hat with a large brim.

Attendees wore hats from designers around the world such as Philip Treacy, Lola, and Louise Green.

Other fans sported hats by local businesses such Carol Bader, Jill Courtemanche, the Village Hat

Shop, and Diana Cavagnaro-Couture Millinery.

There is always much anticipation for the hat contest each year.

This year was no exception and there were more than 300 contestants who entered the 22nd annual Opening Day Hats Contest at Del Mar. Andria Elam won the Best Fascinator category along with The Bing Crosby Grand Prize. This winning entry was a lavender and turquoise fascinator adorned with beautiful feathers and veiling. Elam won a Fairmont Grand Del Mar one-night stay and dinner for two at the Addison Restaurant.

The Most Glamorous was Renee Salas with red rose and polka dot ribbons on her hat. The Best Flower Chapeau went to Tessa Robeson who adorned a hat with bright tropical flowers and added gold skeletons drinking tequila.

The Most Outrageous Hat went to Nadia Dayzie who was wearing a large green under-the-sea themed hat, which scattered bubbles. The Best Racing Theme winner was Rachel Burton who sported a starting gate with a grandstand and winner’s circle.

Racing will continue five days a week, Wednesdays through Sundays until Sept. 5. The track will be closed Mondays and Tuesdays except for Labor Day. Look for the next Hat Contest on Opening Day of the Bing Crosby Season, which will begin on Nov. 11. The season will continue through Dec. 4. Remember every racing day is a great day to wear a hat! Theatre news: Cygnet Theatre to produce two August Wilson plays Virchis to receive award Border Angels, celebrating 30 years of commitment to saving lives, announces that William Alejandro Virchis, founding artistic director of Teatro Máscara Mágica (former theatre professor, Southwestern College, and one of the founders, along with the late Craig Noel and then UCSD professor Jorge Huerta of the Old Globe’s bilingual Teatro Meta) will receive the prestigious Robert Martinez Spirit Award for his lifetime of devotion to and work with his communities. Fireworks in the Gaslamp Quarter As you may know, Lamb’s Players has filled the 350-seat Horton Grand Theatre in the Gaslamp Quarter with music and mirth for eight years. In a post-Independence Day fireworks display, Lambs, Intrepid Theatre Company, and San Diego Musical Theatre (SDMT) made individual, multilateral announcements: Lamb’s is vacating the Horton Grand, and Intrepid and SDMT will share the great little bandbox theatre, individually producing plays and musicals.

No worries, though: Lamb’s continues producing in Coronado, SDMT continues its well-

established series at the Spreckels Theatre and Intrepid, badly in need of a home for several years, now has one.

As the Lamb’s/Horton Grand theatre-inresidence, they had already found a temporary venue there, over the past year producing “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf” starring Deborah Gilmour Smyth and Robert Smyth, co-artistic leaders of Lamb’s, and more recently presenting the musical revue, “Woodie Guthrie’s American Song.”

Intrepid has already announced a fourplay, seventh season beginning with Yazmina Reza’s “Art” Sept. 29-Nov. 6), then continuing with Ayad Akhtar’s “The Invisible Hand” (Feb 2-March 19. 2017), the musical, “Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story” (May 25-July 2) and Suzan Lori-Parks’s “Father Comes Home from the Wars, Parts 1,2, & 3 (Sept. 21-Nov. 5, 2017). SDMT’s announcement of off-Broadway size musicals is forthcoming. Looks like it will be win-win for all.

Hollingsworth dynasty Ed and Marian Hollingsworth’s La Mesa theatrical dynasty (their talented offspring, Blair, Morgan, Trevor and Devin are veterans of Starlight musicals, Cygnet Theatre, Cygnet Theatre, San Diego Rep, etc. etc.) has catapulted another, Morgan, to New York City.

Through July 31, Morgan sang and played guitar in the 13th annual New York Musical Theatre Festival production of Andrew Palermo and Shannon Stoeke’s [sic] “Nickel Mines,” a musical based on a true event of 2006 in which a lone gunman shot 10 Amish girls, four of them fatally. It concerns how violence, faith, forgiveness and justice speak to and interact with one another.

D.C. area director in the Wings Washington, D.C. area director and educator Jennifer L. Nelson was in town July 15 for Cygnet Theatre’s final callback auditions for the next “Rep,” two August Wilson plays, “Seven Guitars” and “King Hedley II,” that open Sept. 28 and play alternately through Nov. 6 at the theatre in Old Town. Neither play has been fully produced professionally in the San Diego area.

Nelson has directed six of Wilson’s plays, two of them twice, and as of November she will have directed all but two. Casting was not complete at press time, but I can tell you that Ro Boddie, who made such a stunning debut in Cygnet’s “Stupid F**cking Bird” this season, plays major roles in both Wilson plays, which are related by blood and deceit.

‘Gypsy, a Musical Fable’ fills Cygnet Theatre with talented local cast Many critics claim that “Gypsy, a Musical Fable,” the 1959 Broadway musical loosely based on Gypsy Rose Lee’s memoirs, is the perfect musical to emerge from the last half of the 20th century.

It has a book by Arthur Laurents, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and music by Jule Styne. Readers may judge for themselves through Sept. 4 at Cygnet Theatre in Old Town as performed by a company of 25 and a band of six, including conductor/keyboard Terry O’Donnell.

Several things are evident: “Gypsy” has an iconic role in Gypsy Rose Lee’s mother, Rose; it contains a poignant, unrequited love story; it has a dandy musical score that advances the plot; and it has one of the greatest 11th hour songs ever written (“Rose’s Turn”).

If women had them, “Gypsy” would be a ball-buster: It is exceptionally demanding vocally and decidedly iconic. Rose is quite simply a lioness training, guiding and propelling her not-so-talented kittens, Baby June (Katie Whalley Banville) and Louise (Allison Spratt Pearce) into vaudeville. In real life June became actor June Haver and Louise, the world-renowned stripper, Gypsy Rose Lee. Seeing a production played by anyone other than a splendid Rose is an excruciating experience, fraught with worry. Linda Libby is a top performer in any production anywhere (she performed the role at ion theatre in 2011). The woman has the supreme acting chops, the vocal capacity, and, yes, the balls to bring it off in Murray’s meticulously cast production.

One may worry about certain areas of potential vocal strain, especially amid a vigorous schedule such as Cygnet’s (seven performances each week), but there is never a doubt that experiencing Libby’s performance is mountaintop, and all one can do is sit awestruck in the dark.

Manny Fernandes is priceless as Herbie, the love-smitten manager of Rose’s vaudeville troupe. He sticks with her and the kids through childhood, providing stability and common sense.

He stays long after his hopes of marrying Rose are dashed, throughout the prolonged death of vaudeville, after the departure of June. Finally, when he witnesses the appalling desperation of Rose’s hopes for Louise (Allison Spratt Pearce), he leaves.

Hansen outstanding in the adult role of Tulsa, the dancer who strikes out on his own and elopes with Jane.

David Kirk Grant excels as all the fathers, uncles and impresarios, and finally as the jaded strip-show stage manager where the act finally breaks up and Louise/Gypsy makes the talent and personality transformation that allows her to become a singular star on her own. From My Garden: Oregano - a joy to grow By LINDA MARRONE Grilled Chicken with Feta Vinaigrette 6 boneless skinless chicken breasts 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice 2 tab red wine vinegar 2-4 garlic cloves, pressed 2 green onions, chopped 1 tab fresh oregano, finely chopped 1 tab fresh dill, finely chopped 1 tab fresh flat-leaf parsley, chopped Pinch red chili flakes 3/4 cup extra virgin olive oil Sea salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste 1/2 cup feta cheese, crumbled 6 cups arugula, long stems removed Grilled cherry tomatoes

With a power pack of health benefits, oregano is a nutrientrich, aromatic perennial herb that is easy to grow in both the garden and in containers.

Not only does oregano have a phytochemical thought to fight cancer, its antioxidants help the immune system and it has both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Years ago, I was told that if you make a wet rub with fresh or dry oregano leaves, garlic, sea salt, pepper and extra virgin olive oil and rub it onto steaks before grilling, the oregano will help cut down on any toxic compounds that may occur when meat is grilled.

A symbol of joy and happiness to the ancient Greeks, there are two popular varieties of oregano, Mediterranean and Mexican. The oregano we associate with the flavors of Mediterranean cuisine is also know as wild marjoram and is related to the mint family. Mediterranean oregano has a mild earthy flavor that is sweeter than the Mexican variety. Mexican oregano is more closely related to lemon verbena and has a stronger pungent flavor that can stand out in spicy Mexican and Latin American dishes.

As with most herbs, oregano likes to bask in the sun in welldrained soil. Fertilizing needs are very low and let the soil dry out before watering. As you clip the oregano, you will encourage the plant to grow. Since it is perennial, cut it back almost to the ground in the winter and it should come back in the spring. After about 3 -

5 years, the oregano plant will begin to get woody and lose its flavor, medicinal properties and will need to be replaced.

Plant oregano seeds in the spring and early summer or purchase small pots of oregano that is already growing to add to your herb garden. Harvest oregano before it flowers to ensure the leaves contain the most potency, or let a few plants flower to attract beneficial insects to your garden.

Pick stems that are about 4 inches long and run your fingers down the stems to remove the leaves.

Unlike most herbs, oregano is a good herb to dry. Wash the cut stems and leaves well and pat them dry. Tie the stems together and hang them in a cool dry place.

This technique is better than oven or sun drying since it preserves the plant’s essential oils. Dry oregano is much more intense in flavor than fresh, so use less.

The perfect time to use oregano is when it is flourishing in the summer. Add fresh leaves at the end of cooking to maintain the flavor or sauté dry oregano with olive oil with onions garlic when making sauces or sautéing vegetables.

The following recipe was adapted from the Gas Grill Gourmet Cookbook and is one of my favorite summer meals.

Mix the lemon juice, vinegar, garlic, green onions, oregano, dill, parsley, chili flakes together and whisk in the olive oil. Place the chicken in sealable plastic bags and pour half of the vinaigrette over the chicken and season with salt and pepper. Marinate the chicken for 2-4 hours.

Add the feta and pepper to the remaining vinaigrette and set aside – feta is salty, add salt if needed. Grill the chicken on an oiled grill until cooked through and transfer it to a platter lined with arugula. Place the grilled chicken on top of the arugula and surround it with grilled cherry tomatoes.

Pour the feta vinaigrette over the chicken while it is still warm and garnish the platter with lemon slices and a few springs of oregano.

August 6 — “Trades That Shaped Westward Expansion” — As towns developed in

the West so did the need for specialized trades and artisans. Old Town San Diego will present pivotal 19th century trades that helped shape the community of San Diego.

August 13 — “Days of the Vaquero” — Vaqueros were the first cowboys in California.

They were highly skilled horsemen and cattle herders who were an integral part of the early cattle trade in California. The day will celebrate their horsemanship techniques and other aspects of Californio culture.

Construction at former Green Dragon disrupts Brockton Villa restaurant

By DAVE SCHWAB Redevelopment of the former Green Dragon Art Colony in La Jolla got off to a rough start when work crews starting construction unannounced July 20 were forced to stop because dirt, noise and visual obstruction were negatively impacting Brockton Villa restaurant next door.

“This project has been in the works to be developed for more than 20 years,” noted Megan Heine, who, along with husband David, co-owns Brockton Villa and a sister restaurant, Beaumont's, in Bird Rock. She noted project developers had “some pretty specific requirements and directions” on how to operate during construction “in order to protect our business, Brockton Villa.”

Heine said those conditions, at the outset at least, were not properly met.

“They were supposed to do mitigation for disturbances, including putting up fencing,” she said adding construction began “right next to us without notification.”

Heine said customers, complaining of noise and dust, were soon forced from the restaurant's patio once construction commenced, with many having to be comped because of the untimely disruption.

At Heine's request, construction was halted, and didn't resume until several days later once new fencing, of an appropriate height, was erected to prevent restaurant guests from observing construction activity.

Construction crews were also parking on Coast Boulevard, taking up on-street parking there that is tight even in good times, and virtually non-existent during the peak of the summer tourist season, Heine said.

Jolla, noted that the project contractor, Turner Construction, is “capable and well-organized and their project manager has been talking with Dave (Heine) daily once they got onsite. I am sure they will be responsive to any other needs that the Heines may have. They will do the usual construction activities, and there are no secrets about what the work is that has to be done, and how they will go about it. We will continue to talk with the Heines, and see that their needs are being met.”

Benton added the Heines were initially “quite concerned in their review of the project,” noting David Heine personally appeared at the Planning Commission hearing where their needs were considered, “and ultimately the building permit was duly issued for that project.”

“The owners have been quite concerned about all of the history (Green Dragon Colony) and they want to preserve the record of that as well,” said Benton pointing out provision has been made “for archaeological monitoring of the site as the contractor could very well find arti-

facts from both the times of the Native American and the Green Dragon periods. They are also mindful of the sensitive location fronting the ocean, and the requirements for scheduling the work to accommodate the summer- and weekend- traffic in the area.”

The former Green Dragon Art Colony at 1241-1249 Coast Blvd. is being transformed into mixed-use retail with condominiums. It is being altered by the addition of three town homes that will face Coast Boulevard and the ocean above the Cove.

The project, in which the town homes are referred to as Jack O'Lantern, Gables and East Cliff, involves three detached residences on a developed site at 1241, 1245 and 1249 Coast Blvd. (west of 1255 Coast Blvd.).

Project deviations include construction of three new driveways added to an existing driveway along Coast Boulevard. Also proposed in the project is ground-floor residential, not retail, on the lot fronting Coast Boulevard. The town homes will have individual parking garages

and balconies and entrances looking over Coast Boulevard.

Architect Benton said the three town homes onsite will be built conforming to the design that uses the historic design elements that were approved by the State Historic Sites Board and the Coastal Commission in 1992.

“Plus, both agencies reviewed the current updated design in the application that was finally approved in 2014,” said Benton adding town homes “will all have modern conveniences and range in size from approximately 3,100 to 5,000 square feet, with special care to create a design that continues the historic tradition of the Green Dragon colony.

“All town homes have their own elevators and underground parking garages,” Benton said. “The large concrete wall fronting Coast Boulevard will be reduced substantially in height, so that each town home will have direct access to Coast Boulevard.”

The three town homes will each have a unique style, with their own

decks and balconies, wood detailing, and trellises facing the street, noted Benton. “These will be available for long-term lease, and it is expected that the first showing of the units will be when we get further along in construction,” he said.

The former Green Dragon art colony, one of La Jolla's most noteworthy early settlements, has had a long history.

Anna Held Heinrich, the governess of Ulysses S. Grant Jr.'s children, developed a collection of 12 cottages scattered along the hill there down to the ocean in 1894 she named the “Green Dragon Colony,” according to Wikipedia. The cottages were built between 1895 and 1906 during a Bohemian movement.

Composers, actors, authors, architects and others came to spend time and practice their crafts while enjoying the La Jolla ocean view.

In 1981, the city designated the colony historically significant. In 1989, the San Diego City council voted 6-2 against a plan to condemn the 1acre site and then sell it to the Chart House restaurant chain. The remaining four cottages were ultimately demolished in 1991. The 12 Green Dragon Buildings once occupied a loose collection of galleries and boutiques in La Jolla’s downtown Village.

Benton said project construction on Jack O'Lantern is expected to take 20 months adding, “by next summer (2017) we should really be offsite and working inside the buildings entirely.”

By LAINIE FRASER An art instructor from High Tech High and a few of his students have enhanced the new addition to Marco Polo Independent BMW & Mini Service in La Jolla.

Over the course of five days, Jeremy Farson, an artist from La Jolla and high school art teacher, along with five of his students, designed and completed a wall mural at the

automotive shop. The students were bused to the shop everyday and have now left their mark and aided in the beautification of the neighborhood.

Marco Polo Independent BMW & Mini Service has been serving the La Jolla community for more than 30 years and recently expanded to the location next door.

The mural displays new and old BMWs and celebrates both the expansion and the history

of the shop.

Marco Polo is one of the few automotive shops in La Jolla that resides in a building that has remained unchanged over the years, something the owners, Janet and Marco Gentile, are very proud of.

“We wanted to incorporate new and old as well as the beautiful local view,” said Janet Gentile. "That's why there are new and old BMWs as well as the local shack."

UCSD recently announced that it has offered admission to more than 30,000 freshmen for the fall semester, almost 3,800 more than last year, and around 9,800 transfer students, up by more than 1,650.

The students were selected from a record 84,209 freshman and 18,487 transfer applications.

“We are pleased to welcome this exceptional new class of students,'' said UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla. “These talented new scholars will carry on UC San Diego's tradition of pushing boundaries and challenging expectations in order to make our world a better place.''

The admitted freshmen have an average grade-point average of 4.12, while the average transfer GPA is 3.61, according to UCSD. Since the students offered admission by UCSD have likely been accepted elsewhere, the actual numbers of those who show up on the La Jolla campus in September will be considerably lower.

School officials said they anticipate enrolling roughly 5,660 freshmen and 2,900 transfers.

The admitted freshman class includes 58 percent more Mexican Americans and 46 percent more African Americans, according to UCSD. The most popular majors chosen by the freshman class are biology, economics, math, chemistry, and mechanical or aerospace engineering. For transfer students, popular majors included economics, biology, math and psychology.

School officials said 16 percent more admissions slots went to instate students than last year.

Pitching guru Tom House works with Vikings

By ED PIPER A classic movie channel has been showing “The Music Man” lately, the story of a con man who tries to sell the small town of River City down the river.

A pitching guru came to La Jolla recently, promising the 20 young hurlers arrayed before him that he would increase the speed of their pitches by six miles an hour by the end of his instructional clinic.

Was he a flim-flam man in the mold of Harold Hill, peddling mere stories, or could he deliver on what he promised his youthful audience?

Tom House, a former major league pitcher for nine years who has since made a decades-long career of coaching future Hall of Famers like Nolan Ryan, took his first subject at the afternoon clinic, Nick Hammel, a rising senior at La Jolla High.

“Shuffle, shuffle,” the 70-year-old instructed Hammel, as the 17-year-old went through his pitching motion, substituting a white

handtowel for a baseball. House had him repeat the ersatz delivery twice, then led the young right-hander in stepping off how many feet his stride from the mound carried him.

A short while later, House, working with his third Viking varsity pitcher, turned to Gary Frank, head baseball coach at the high school: “A thousand repetitions in a month.

They can get it.”

The savant’s mantra: Three miles per hour increase in pitch speed with improved mechanics, and three miles per hour in perceived additional speed with a longer stride – up to seven feet – from the rubber, for a total of six mph.

A release point closer to the plate as a result of the longer stride, the veteran pitching coach explained to his young charges, means the ball has to travel a shorter distance to hitters, who have less time to react.

"Who cares?" is a question some readers might pose in light of all the more serious events going on in the world. An MLS (multiple listing service) wrote the following: "University City has a loose boundary that sometimes gets confused." Really?

caught his 715th home run on the fly. He ran to home plate and gave the ball to Aaron. Aaron always appreciated that Tom never tried to sell the ball to him or anything like that.”

Interstate 5 used to be the dividing line between these two communities. La Jolla was mainly the village, Mt. Soledad homes, La Jolla Shores. When the Scripps family decided to build the "new" hospital in 1964 to replace the old one built in 1924 in La Jolla proper, the family insisted on having the ZIP code west of I-5 become 92037. The slippery slope began.

What awakened this midsummer madness in me was the title of my last article "La Jollans building bridges, not walls with Peace Corps." Several University City residents questioned my loyalty to my neighborhood and my geography skills. After all, the subjects of the story were local U.C. residents for decades, Patty and Bill Mittendorf.

Neither one had ever lived in La

Jolla. I explained this affront to the editor. This was an uncivil war not written in history books.

Almost all of South University below Rose Canyon is clearly identified as U.C. except the newest apartment complex lining our main street, Governor Drive, has La Jolla in its name. This name choice was insensitive to U.C. locals who feel the creeping in of La Jolla for financial gain. Years ago, a couple owned a donut shop on Governor at the corner of Regents Road. They named it La Jolla Donuts and promptly changed it when customers boycotted the place. U.C. Donuts provided their family with a good income.

La Jolla, whose nickname is "The Jewel," is lovely with its ocean views, vacation amenities, and pricey residences. University City is also lovely with its Rose Canyon, better weather, closeknit neighborhood to

the south and urban action to the north.

The Golden Triangle, defined by Interstate 5 to the west of U.C. and 805 to the east and 52 at the base, reflects that all that glitters is not gold. The name La Jolla may raise the real estate values, but U.C. feels the way Native Americans did when the white men discovered them.

In utter lack of respect to University City, whenever our hometown newspaper printed in L.A. writes about a crime in the Golden Triangle, it always says it happens in University City, no matter what the ZIP is. Should that bother residents here? Of course.

Let us not forget that both U.C. and La Jolla lay claim to UCSD, but U.C. will agree it is west of I-5 and is entitled to the La Jolla ZIP, 92037.

But wait, UCSD on Gilman Drive has 92093 as its ZIP. But that's a story for another day.

Pointing out LJVMA “shouldn't be the police of our members,” Marengo added, “We decided to find a way to legalize the signage program in the PROW. We would like to give an amnesty period to comply with a sign program that would grant merchants a right through the PROW to let them exist without creating an obstacle to ADA regulations and or pedestrians, etc.”

Immediate reaction to the La Jolla PROW sandwich board proposal has been strong — both for and against.

Longtime La Jolla community planner and activist Joe LaCava said he supports sandwich boards in the PROW for two reasons.

“Sandwich boards improve the walkability of the Village; building

signs are oriented to cars, the boards help pedestrians navigate the many stores, restaurants, and services we have in the Village,” LaCava said.

“Second, the new rules will allow the Village Merchants Association to regulate the size, appearance and location of the boards. Today, there is no enforcement, and their inconsistent appearance and placement are a detriment to the Village.”

Not every La Jollan agrees.

“Where have all our sidewalks gone?” asked Sally Miller, a member of La Jolla Parks and Beaches (LJPB), Inc. answering, “Gone to sandwich boards. Gone to dog dishes. Gone to flags and other 'scriggilers' (decorations).

“Gone to plants and planters. Unfortunately continuing to go to too many cigarette butts and other trash. And gone to sidewalk cafes — even if the restaurant has multiple other outdoor spaces within their building.”

Ann Dynes, another LJPB member, steered a more neutral course

between the two extremes for and against sandwich boards.

“I have not been particularly involved in this issue but, as a resident, I support tastefully-done sandwich boards because I appreciate the problem of invisibility for many of the local businesses which are not storefronts on primary streets,” she said. “I do not see a need for them to be used by those operating at street level, and (those) visible to passing visitors.”

Marengo said those adamantly opposed to sandwich boards “haven’t walked La Jolla lately.”

“We have signs cluttering the sidewalks of all shapes and sizes and virtually everywhere; some are stacked end-to-end blocking entire sidewalks,” Marengo said.

“Although it’s a nice thought and makes La Jolla classier to not have them, we have learned that La Jollans invest in these types of signs, because they feel it helps their business. We are here to support and represent them.”

The maximum sentence Montana faces is 38 years to life in prison. Because the jury found the attempted murder premeditated, that enhancement carries a life sentence which includes parole possibility after seven years.

Montana could also receive eight years consecutively for the death threats made against Robert Hibler, the manager of the San Diego Rowing Club, and the DMV employee.

Judge Michael Smyth set sentencing for Aug. 24. He changed Montana’s $750,000 bail to no bail and he remains in jail.

The verdict was read around 4:45 p.m. and jurors left the courthouse without comment.

Jurors heard closing arguments Tuesday and began their deliberations Wednesday morning.

Hibler testified as the trial’s first witness on July 11 about Montana driving his jet ski very fast in Mission Bay, causing a woman to fall over in a boat in 2012. This occurred after Montana was approached by Hibler and told not to drive his jet skis so fast because he was causing big waves. In response, Montana “gunned” his jet ski and drove faster, he said.

Montana made a series of threatening phone calls which were recorded and played to the jury. Hibler contacted police at the time, but police were unable to locate Montana in 2012.

In the recordings, Montana said he was getting a gun, was mentally unstable, and on medication.
