Recently, on a clandestine beach run, I was nearly blinded by an overabundance of lumens emitted by one such expired critter. While nosing around for my Foster Grants, I spied yet another one! Since hatchetfish typically live about a thousand feet

darkness to bright light — within an hour. This particular species of silver bullet hurtles vertically about 800 feet up and down during the day and double this distance throughout the night. That’s a Disneyland ride we wouldn’t survive. Why the yo-yoing, you ask? Hatchetfish may be following prey also zipping up and down in the water column. Or they may be thwarting predators (nary a tree to hide behind down there). But we really don’t know all of what they’re up to… or down with, as they say. But I digress. The hatchetfish I eyed were in trouble well before the surf body-slammed them onto terra firma. For
La Jolla Community Planning Association in June deadlocked — and therefore made no recommendation — on a proposal by a local landlord to change zoning on the ground floor of the building at 1111 Prospect St. to allow more office space and less retail. The building on the corner of Prospect Street and Herschel Avenue, which previously housed boutique Hotel Parisi and Victoria’s Secret, has been vacant the past couple years. La Jolla entrepreneur Peter Wagner came to the association asking to increase, from 25 to 50 percent, the maximum amount of office space allowed on the building’s ground floor. “If you say no, it’s going to stay empty,” warned Wagner, noting he’s spent two years unsuccessfully

Merchants fete volunteers, discuss fall vote, art walk, Village clean-up By DAVE SCHWAB At its June meeting, La Jolla Village Merchants Association saluted community volunteers and discussed fall elections and projects moving ahead, including a Village business survey, a community art walk and the ongoing Sparkle & Shine clean-up campaign. “We’d like to thank Jeffrey Gerwin, who’s taken it upon himself to pay for — and do — all the hard work for cleaning up garbage in our Village,” said Sheila Fortune, the merchant group’s executive director. “He’s doing it out of love of La Jolla.” Fortune asked for community donations of garbage bags to help Gerwin out. Pointing out Gerwin has informed the city that some Village trash cans aren’t being emptied, association board member Nancy Warwick noted, “He’s made a dif-

ference.” Board member Elsie Arredondo said a grass-roots effort to create a new Village art walk has borne fruit. “We held one in May on Girard and Kline using seed money, and it was a huge success,” Arredondo said, adding the idea moving forward is to “focus on one block at a time.” “We want to grow it every month,” Arredondo said, noting participating merchants are kicking in $25 to pay expenses. The fledgling art walk is being held every second Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. “We’re trying to grow it into something fun our local[s] can do before or after dinner on a Saturday,” Arredondo added. Fortune noted earlier efforts to stage art walks encompassing the entire Village proved difficult to execute and maintain because the coverage area was so large. The association voted unanimously to hold a mail-ballot election rather than have in-person balloting for its annual group election in October. Fortune said the hope is that more busy merchants will participate if they don’t have to physically come in to vote. She

Alleged Kraska assailant to stand trial in MB death threats A San Diego Superior Court judge on June 3 ordered the accused assailant of Ch. 8 sports director Kyle Kraska to stand trial for making criminal death threats to the manager of the San Diego Rowing Club, located in Mission Bay, and to an employee at the Poway Department of Motor Vehicles office. Mike Montana was ordered to trial by Judge Michael Smyth. Montana, 54, of El Cajon, could receive up to eight years in prison if sentenced consecutively. Montana is also alleged to have shot Kraska last February in a business dispute. Montana has been ordered to stand trial beginning Nov. 2 in the Kraska matter and the death threat allegations. Robert Hibler, the director of operations for the San Diego Rowing Club
in Mission Bay, testified before San Diego Superior Court Judge Michael Smyth on about a dozen threatening messages left in November of 2012 by Montana after Montana was asked not to Jet Ski fast in a certain area of Mission Bay. Hibler said lifeguards admonished Montana but that he received no ticket. Afterward, Hibler said, he began receiving death threats from Montana because “he was upset that we had called (the lifeguards) on him.” Two of those messages were played in court. “He suggested we have a shootout on the water,” said Hibler, adding that Montana said he has “bear Mace to use on women and children.” Montana's attorney, Richard Jayakumar, asked that the death threat counts be dropped, saying his
client made only a “conditional threat” that he did not mean to carry out. “The intent was clear,” Smyth responded. Kraska, who initially was in a sixday medically induced coma after the Feb. 10 shootings that centered on a dispute involving the painting of Kraska's Scripps Ranch house, was the star witness earlier in the day in the two-day preliminary hearing. Kraska is back on the air at Ch. 8. If convicted in the shootings, Montana faces a life term in prison for attempted murder plus 25 years for using a firearm in a violent crime. In the death threat cases, Montana pleaded not guilty at the end of the hearing. He remains in the George Bailey Detention Facility on $750,000 bail.
Two ex-employees plead guilty in Jewish Community Center thefts Two longtime financial employees at La Jolla's Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center pleaded guilty June 4 to using their positions to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars from the La Jolla facility. Prosecutors said Nancy Johnson, who served as the JCC’s chief financial officer from 1991 to 2014, used her access — between 2008 and last year — to misappropriate $412,289, which she used for a variety of purchases, including a stay at the Grand Wailea Resort in Maui, airfare to the Bahamas, tickets to ESPN’s X Games and dinners at upscale restaurants. At the same time Johnson was embezzling funds to pay for lavish vacations and designer clothing, she claimed the JCC couldn’t afford the numerous programs and activities offered to the community, according

Postal service moving carrier annex to UC The United States Postal Service will be moving its La Jolla carrier annex operations and employees into the University City carrier annex, located at 5045 Shoreham Place, effective July 25. Town council approves methods to deter Cove sea lions By DAVE SCHWAB In June, La Jolla Town Council endorsed using a variety of nonharmful methods to deter sea lions from continuing to encroach on — and displace — beachgoers and tourist at the Cove. Methods of deterrence are approved by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a federal agency charged with safeguarding the conditions of the ocean and atmosphere. Trustee Natasha Alexander cautioned the council needs to be careful in whatever it does to dissuade sea lions at the Cove, noting the marine mammals are an important tourist draw and integral to the local economy. “The (foul) smell and feces and other things from them far outweigh the benefits,” replied La Jolla resident Jeff Chasan. “We need to
clean up the water and the smell so tourists can actually use this (Cove).” From the audience, diver Bill Robbins warned that acting soon is critical, as past experience with sea lions elsewhere along the California coast has demonstrated the difficulty of dislodging the marine mammals from beaches once they’re entrenched. Trustees also voted to support efforts of Beach-Barber tract neighbors seeking to increase security at pocket beaches, which are being overrun by underage youth who are drinking, using drugs and trashing the area. Ex-nurse to be sentenced in painkiller tampering A former nurse at the La Jolla Women’s Surgery Center will be sentenced Aug. 21 after she pleaded guilty to siphoning off a painkiller used to treat patients. Sarah Elizabeth Martin, of San Diego, is free on her own recognizance and said at the hearing she would enter a drug treatment program. Her plea agreement specifies that she complete six months of residential drug treatment. Martin, 25, worked at the clinic at 9850 Genesee Ave. from October of 2014 to March 24 as a registered nurse. Part of her responsibilities involved administering a generic drug for Demerol, but she appropriated some of the drug and replaced it with saline solution. Assistant U.S. Attorney Melanie Pierson said June 12 that there was
no evidence of harm to any patient. It was estimated that the adulterated drug was administered to as many as 250 patients. Martin faces a maximum sentence of three years in federal prison and has agreed to repay the clinic $270 for the cost of what she took. The guilty plea to adulteration of a drug held for sale was taken by U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Jill Burkhardt. According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, Martin admitted she removed the drug from vials with a syringe. She glued the caps back on the vials with the intent to mislead others that the vials had not been touched. The Food and Drug Administration has investigated the case. – Neal Putnam

The parade initially consisted of just a few Bird Rock families. But over the years, it has morphed into a major local event, drawing nearly 5,000 participants. Coffee (and more) is brewing at Ooh La La Dance Academy By JENNIFER GREEN The smell is cappuccinos and French pastries. The sound is little feet scurrying around the studio waiting for instruction. The sights are kids with pink tutus and hair in buns and half-awake locals waiting for their coffee. It’s a beehive of activity on Monday morning at Ooh La La Dance Academy and le Petit Chateau coffee house. It's Day 1 of summer camp, dance-style. Kids ages 7 to 15 get the chance to learn ballet, jazz and all the classic dance methods. And the adjoining coffee house is humming along to folk tunes from the radio. La Jolla-based owners Damien and Susie Grafte recently expanded their one-room dance academy to two large dance studios and a French-inspired coffee house. Damien runs the coffee house side and Susie leads the dance academy. Why expand a dance studio to include coffee? The Graftes wanted to offer parents and guests a place to relax in a culturally diverse atmosphere wherein art mediums commingle. “In big arts cities like New York and Paris,” Damien explains, “arts are a social thing. At our place, people can watch dancing, gather, have coffee while they dance, whatever!” Perhaps best of all, it gets the parents

out of their cars and off their phones and into the coffee house to talk and take in Damien’s original art on the walls. In addition to kids’ classes, the studio space has allowed Susie to expand popular classes like Hot Tango Tuesdays, where you can take a tango dance or just mingle. The academy’s 20-plus instructors teach everything from Latin burlesque to cha-cha-cha and ballet. Students who take part in major recitals get to travel with the group. This summer’s troupe destination is Greece. “It’s a family atmosphere here,” says Cassandra Stephens, dance instructor and part-time barista. Susie started Ooh La La in 2011 in San Diego after years of loving dance. “When salsa dance explod-
ed in 2003, I got addicted,” she says. “I would work in Santa Barbara and then dance at night for four [or] five hours in Los Angeles.” That’s when she began entering competitions, eventually placing 10th in the world with cabaret lifts. The owners met in Bora Bora, even though he’s originally from the Bordeaux region of France. When they decided to get married, his danc background and love for French culture made for a perfect business partnership. Rady Children's CFO Roger Roux, 62, dies in auto-bicycle mishap The chief financial officer and senior vice president at Rady Children's Hospital was struck and killed as he rode his bicycle in Torrey Highlands the afternoon of June 14. Roger Gerard Roux, 64, was hit as he was bicycling in the 14200 block of Camino del Sur, near state Route 56. The driver, a 40-year-old woman
whose name was withheld, was heading south on Camino del Sur when she crossed into the bicycle lane and struck Roux. The traffic division is investigating. Roux, a Boston native, was responsible for all financial facets of the Serra Mesa-area children's medical center. A spokesman said that in his 12-
year tenure, Roux had brought the hospital to its strongest fiscal position in its 60-year history. Rady Children's Hospital maintains an emergency neonatal center in La Jolla. Roux is survived by his wife Diane, son Matthew and grandchildren Emerson and Xavier. – FOX5
RINGING OUT THE YEAR AT UCSD In 1965, a physics class at UCSD dropped a watermelon from the top floor of Urey Hall to prove their professor wrong. Flash-forward to 2015. Instead of being an experiment to prove a point, the 51st Watermelon Drop marks the end of the academic calendar. Lore has it that a physics professor asked his students how far a watermelon would splat if it were dropped from the top of Urey Hall (a problem dealing with terminal velocity). The students believe they got the right answer, but the professor didn’t agree; thus, the students conducted the experiment to decide who was correct. The students won – and the farthest piece of watermelon flung was 91 feet. I was visiting San Diego and unexpectedly needed a tux four hours before a black tie event in LaJolla. I called and Jerry the owner answered saying, "you better get over here soon!" I did and quickly saw why. It was a busy late Saturday afternoon, and the little shop was filled with people getting fitted. Yet, the whole staff - Jerry, Janet, Magic Mike - worked hard to get me fitted and looking good in such short notice. A nod to service brushes campus (for real) at LJHS commencement Erica Liu was first to receive her diploma at La Jolla High School's class of 2015 commencement ceremony at Gene Edwards Stadium on June 15 – such are the perks that come with the office of class valedictorian. Several minutes before, Liu had reportedly regaled her 354 fellow graduates with an upbeat message on what awaits them, and apparently, there's plenty. A published report says 97 percent of these seniors are going to college and that more than 200 of them racked up at least a 3.5 accum during their four years. The same story shows that 10 percent topped out their GPAs at at least 4.48. Liu's was reportedly the highest, at 4.86. For her part, she's off to MIT. I'm sure Liu's talk was totally cool – problem is I can't report on it, as I'd intended. See, I missed about the first half-hour of the whole thing, owing to a snag I'm about to explain. As luck would have it, I did get in on the last ten minutes of Principal Chuck Podhorsky, who eloquently listed the students' virtues amid his thanks to the faculty. Podhorsky happened to use the phrase “of service” at least twice – and what would have been a disaster of a story is herein swathed in robes of irony and heartfelt thanks. Little did Podhorsky know that his message of selflessness was playing out literally yards from the field. For the second time in my career, I was failing miserably at a task that's formidable any day of the week – finding that ever-elusive parking space.
Wine, Walking & Gardening? When was the last time you did any gardening, had an alcoholic drink or took a walk somewhere? If you have to even think about it then I suggest you read on as these three activities are believed to have merit for reducing the incidence of Dementia in over 60s. Firstly, my passion is gardening which I firmly believe helps me now in my 50s and will continue to help me into my old age. I do however expect my garden to get smaller as the years go on and for that matter I’ll probably end up dead heading a geranium in my last days, no pun intended. The point is, no matter how large my garden is, I have an active, mental and physical inter-
I'd been asked to cover the graduation for this paper, and I'd left our Pacific Beach office about four and a half days early in anticipation of the crunch at the school. My foresight was of no help as I circled and circled the turf; at the eleventh hour, our reporter Dave Schwab had an answer. His quick call to Fire Station 13, right across from the school's front entrance on Nautilus Street, had met with the kindliest of souls, who, remarkably, said I could use the station's lot. “You the guy from The La Jolla Light?” he asked as I pulled up, his grin threatening to split his face. “Village News, actually,” I replied in a heartbeat, thanking him profusely for his unrequited kindness. He waved me off like it was no big deal – “Just pull up over on the side,” he instructed, ending with a folksy “No problem” as I said I'd just be a few minutes. Now, that's “of service.” And there's more. I raced across Nautilus and followed the sound from the PA system toward the field, only to be waylaid by a chain-link fence that had no intention of relinquishing its bulky hold on a surrounding building. I'm sunk. Enter a perfect stranger, maybe my age and in unremarkable street clothes, with no reason to conclude I was there for the ceremony and no earthly compunction toward interest. Then again, who said anything about this experience was earthly? “Sir?” he lightly intoned: “If you'll

Students, teachers join forces at Art Institute show Fashion Files

The Art Institute of CaliforniaSan Diego presented its seventh annual fashion show on June 5 at the Westfield UTC, Nordstrom Wing, on the golf green. The theme for the show was Expressions, and the design students showcased their collections, demonstrating their creativity and self-expression. This was a collaboration between the students and teachers and included the fashion marketing and management students. Erika de la Cruz, from 98.1 FM, was master of ceremonies. The opening act began with a dancing number by Danielle Peig Dance Group. An award was given to producer Victoria Hunt for her tireless work. Fashion industry judges included designer and celebrity stylist Andre Soriano; Asics America's Brenda Oros and Brie Sagona; Gerhard Boutique's Dave Fical; Lizz Russell Collection designer Lizz Russell; Jinx Clothing's Shari Tague; and Stefanie Sears at prAna.

Rachel Lane is the designer behind Lady Lane, whose designs use unique or vintage inspired fabrics. Everything was embellished with something vintage, such as buttons, trims and lace, or accessorized with a pillbox hat. This will be Lady Lane’s second year at Fashion Week San Diego. Last year, she won third place as chosen by the Fashion Week San Diego audience. The second designer showcased was GFASH, by Gwendolyn Bates. Bates teamed up with Lady Lane and decked out all the models with her stunning jewelry. Bates and Lane set up booths so all the guests

Home-grown 'Wrenegades' shines as CCdd wraps up Playhouse residency By CHARLENE BALDRIDGE The 2014-15 La Jolla Playhouse Resident Theater Program is in its waning days. The current ”gypsy” theater company is Circle Circle dot dot. In the delicious throes of its final resident production, CCdd presents “Wrenegades,” an ecological adventure that continues in the Shank Theatre through June 19. Readers may recall the previous CCdd residency production, a science fiction farce titled “Red Planet Respite,” which played two weeks last September. Now, we have the no-less serious, timely and funny “Wrenegades.” As always, CCdd’s productions are original and based on community subjects and interviews. For instance, “Wrenegades” is subtitled “An Ecological Adventure.” The “renegades” are cactus wrens. The new play is directed by CCdd technical director Patrick Kelly and written by Katherine Harroff and Michael Nieto, and it features attractive music by Andrew Steele and Michael Nieto (the composition and execution of the Fairy Shrimp duet
is worthy of the Rhine Maidens!) and choreography by Anne Gehman. Those who saw “Red Planet Respite” have savory memories of Gehman’s spaceship robot. In “Wrenegades,” she portrays a fairy shrimp and a mama wren and various other entities, including a wise Torrey pine. Due to ecological factors, Mama Wren must send the eldest Wren chick (Alexandra Slade), who’s fledged, on a mission to find the family a new home. Wren forms an alliance with Coyote (adorably costumed Justin TuazonMartin), who agrees to help, carrying the bird reluctant to fly on his back (wrens are not much good at long distance). The odyssey is at length successful due to Rowley’s wise Torrey Pine and help from Veronica Burgess’s majestic Great Egret and a Gray Whale. A field guide is provided in the program. Meanwhile, on the human species side, ecologist Edward Leopold (Nieto), a specialist at finding property that will not spoil the environment when developed, is hired by

Young La Jolla musicians to take their act on a 6,000-mile road By MARTIN JONES WESTLIN Ironically, the San Diego Youth Symphony isn't so young anymore. It turned 70 on June 18, kicking up its aging heels with a free concert in Balboa Park's Plaza de Panama. The show amounted to a kick-off of the group's platinum anniversary – but it also most certainly heralded a life-altering experience for each of the 80 members, some 20 of whom live in La Jolla. The group is on its way to perform in China June 23 to July 5, accompanied by San Diego Symphony music director Jahja Ling and youth symphony helmer Jeff Edmons, now in his 20th year with the group. Stops include Yantai, a San Diego sister city; Shanghai, where the group will present a Fourth of July program; and Beijing, home of the China Philharmonic and the famed Forbidden City Concert Hall. Edmons noted that many members, ranging in age from 8 to 25, have grown with the organization; some, he said, have been with the symphony for more than 10 years. The China tour, he added, is their “benchmark for an enhanced life... This is a wonderful artistic project that celebrates each individual and also what can be achieved as a
group. Collectively, we will share our music with new audiences, mak[ing] lifelong connections and memories.” The youth symphony visited China in 1981, touring in Canton, Hangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing. La Jolla resident and Bishop's High School junior Jay Shankar wasn't so much as a glint in a music teacher's eye back then; even so, the clarinetist fields a question about new audiences with a seasoned hand. “I can bet,” Shankar said, “that almost no one in the audience will have heard [Aleksandr] Glazunov's “Overture Solennelle” before. That is, to me, what is great about the tour. The audience will be able to experience amazing music that they have never heard before, and who knows; it might be an inspiration to students in the audience. “I also know that we are going to [be] visiting a music school in Beijing, which is something that will be enriching for both [symphony] students and the students over there.” Western classical music may be relatively unknown in China, but Shankar's instrument isn't. Clarinets often feature rubber, wood and nickel-plated keys from China, and Shankar appreciates the result.

“To me,” Shankar said, “the clarinet is extremely special because of its versatility. The clarinet can cover extreme ranges of pitch and also has such a beautiful, dark and rich sound. “In addition, the clarinet gets some of the best solos in orchestral literature, for example the opening of 'Rhapsody in Blue.' I might be a bit biased, but the clarinet is my favorite of the woodwinds.” So Shankar carries a most welcome common denominator, in the form of his instrument. He and his fellow La Jollans can expect to forge the same connections in kind – the sort that the greatest music and musicians fuel even a quarter of the world away.

Drought-friendly plants? Think succulents! Succulent plants are becoming more and more popular these days since they require less water than most traditional planting materials. Used in containers or in the gardenscape, their range of colors, shapes and sizes can fit into almost any garden style, and I am even finding places for them in my English Country garden. Some succulent plants have very architectural shapes, and others, such as Echeveria, resemble flowers that never stop blooming. Many others bear the likeness to undersea plants and creatures, which work perfectly in a seaside garden. Succulents will display brighter, more vivid colors in the cooler months. There are four main types of succulents: leaf succulents, such as Aloe, that store water in their leaves; stem succulents, which are mostly cacti; root succulents that use their roots to gather and store moisture; and succulents that use more than one plant part for water storage. A few years ago, I had Chrissy Mac at Green Gardens Nursery plant a living wreath for me using only succulents. While my other liv-

ing wreaths require watering at least every three days (with saved water from showering), the succulent wreath is rarely watered and requires only occasional misting on dry, hot days. Here are a few varieties that make lovely container arrangements or wreaths: Echeveria, Aeonium, Dudleya and Craptopelalum – Rosette shapes that come in variegated forms and in different sizes and colors Dudleya looks as though it has been dusted

It’s fair to say that the two hatchetfish bungled into water shallow enough to be railroaded by the craziness of unanticipated surface conditions, then paid the ultimate price. Once there, it didn’t take much time for Nature’s recyclers (a swarm of sand crabs) to swarm the carcasses.

I know I'm not the only one questioning the reason behind the fish's peculiar hatchet shape. And the girth? Let's just say a hatchetfish looks like it's been passed through a pasta-making machine one too many times. The visual spectacle also comprises the otherworldly big head, googly eyes, upturned mouth full of pointy teeth and disappearing tail. Is it any surprise that this disturbing-looking animal calls home the twilight zone? I don’t mean Rod Serling's “fifth dimension” Twilight Zone but the deep ocean realm marked by near darkness, frigid temperature and massive pressure. The only thing that stops this hatchetfish species from being truly terrifying is its size: less than 3 measly inches long. Lately, commercial fishers (who have steadily been hunting down the food chain since there is

When planting in containers, use a soil with good drainage capability and plant a larger succulent in the center and working outward, surround the center plant with smaller types, using trailing types on the outside to allow them to cascade down the sides of the container. Most succulents prefer an area with bright, full sun, and others can actually tolerate a bit of shade. You can mix other plants in with succulents, but you need to make sure they have low water requirements, such as African daisies. The silvery fish are enormously important to the diet of lots and lots of sea life like sardines, herring, sea birds, tunas, dolphins and my doppelgangers, the sea lions. Can we risk the existence of so many for chicken meal when scientists are only beginning to sniff out the secrets of hatchetfish behavior and the workings of the twilight zone habitat? I suggest we first reflect on that.

Thousands of visitors are expected in Ocean Beach to enjoy food, drinks, chili, live music, art and great peoplewatching at the Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off Festival on Saturday, June 27. This year’s theme will be “It’s All About the Beach,” with a focus on music and entertainment. As part of the street fair theme, Rock and Roll San Diego will be offering a free interactive music experience in the middle of the 4900 block of Newport Avenue. In less than 10 minutes, people will have the opportunity to learn a few bars from some of their favorite songs. The chili competition will feature more than 20 tastings from amateur entrants competing for the titles of Hottest Chili, Judges’ Award and the grand prize winner, People’s Choice Award. Proceeds from the chili cookoff will benefit the annual Fourth of July fireworks show off the OB Pier. Back by popular demand, the Hodad’s Burger-Eating Competition will offer contestants a chance to be featured on the Hodad’s Wall of Fame. Contestants will qualify to enter the contest through social media to eat as many burgers as they can within a certain amount of time. The Bloody Mary competition will make a return, with more than 10 Ocean Beach restaurants and bars competing for the title of Best Bloody Mary in Ocean Beach. Children and adults of all ages are welcome to purchase a $10 square to contribute to
this year’s mural project. The Ocean Beach Community Mural Project was recently awarded the 2015 Coastal Living magazine design Award for exceptional seaside style in the year ahead. An Artists’ Alley will feature accomplished artists and their handcrafted items. There will be five stages of nonstop music of all genres throughout the day. Family-friendly attractions include the Wonderland Children’s area – located in the parking lot adjacent to US Bank near Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and Newport Avenue – with a magician, face painting, cliffhanger slide, bounce house, kids’ mechanical shark and more. There will also be a various inflatable obstacle courses. The street fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the 4800-5000 blocks of Newport Avenue, along the waterfront and in the pier parking lot and along the cross-streets of Newport Avenue at Bacon Street and Cable Street. Free trolley services will run from the Knights of Columbus parking lot on Bacon Street between West Point Loma Boulevard and Voltaire Street (every 30 minutes) and the parking lot at the intersection of SeaWorld Drive and Pacific Coast Highway (every hour) from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Admission to the event is free. Marcella Escobar-Eck, representing Wagner, gave a slideshow presentation showing a proposed reconfiguration of the ground-floor space, allowing a portion of the building’s frontage to be changed from retail to office. “What we’re asking for is not any type of deviation,” she said. “We’re not asking to change the minimum amount of retail but to have more flexibility in the amount of office space allowed, including some (building) frontage.” Escobar-Eck said Wagner is proposing to have visitor-serving commercial square footage in the front of the building. “This is a prominent plaza; we want to keep it activated,” she added. Escobar-Eck pointed out that, if the association approved trading off retail for office now, the use could be changed back later on should the retail leasing environment improve. My Childhood in Paris, Part 1 Doing it Better By Natasha Josefowitz, Ph.D. The Paris of the 1920s had cobblestone streets and horsedrawn carriages delivering milk in glass bottles with the cream on top — reserved for my father for his café au lait. Coal was thrown down a chute at the base of our apartment building, and blocks of ice were hauled up the stairs on men’s shoulders and delivered into our aptly named iceboxes. When my grandmother called my father to say that a redheaded girl had been born, he just hung up, disappointed. He had hoped for a boy. My mother called me Natasha, after her favorite character in Tolstoy’s War and Peace. It was the custom to hire a wetnurse to breastfeed babies so that the mother could get back to her normal life. My niania (nanny) was Russian, so that was my first language. I had milk brothers and sisters, the children who she had nursed. This created a special bond, and I remained friends with my milk sister, whose name was also Natacha (the French spelling of my name). My niania was Russian Orthodox, so she took me to church on Sundays. I have a strong memory of burning incense and hearing Gregorian chants. I prayed to baby Jesus on my knees every night. My Jewish mother never found out. Perhaps my love of icons comes from that time. All the children I knew had governesses. It was thought that children were better off being raised by professionals than parents. When I was 3 years old and fluent in Russian, my niania disappeared without an explanation, and Fräulein Margo appeared. She spoke only German, so I was suddenly bereft of my usual care-
giver and left in the hands of someone I could not communicate with. That was the point, to speed up my language acquisition. It worked, and within a short period of time, I was fluent in German. At Christmastime, Margo dressed up as Santa Claus and gave me a burlap sack full of oranges from Palestine — a rare delicacy — and walnuts. I also got a stick to be beaten with when I disobeyed, which happened quite a bit. A German friend of mine also remembers a stick being part of her Christmas package. When I was age 5, the scenario was replayed: This time it was the fräulein who disappeared, and Madame Michelle arrived on the scene to teach me French. By the time I was 6, I was fluent in three languages: a good beginning to my education according to my parents. I can’t imagine how traumatic it must have been as a young child to be suddenly abandoned and confronted with a new person with whom I could not communicate. These kinds of traumas often have repercussions later in life — the fear of abandonment has resurfaced in my life repeatedly. I had just two toys: a doll and a little toy car. No one had the proliferation of toys that my children later possessed. For my birthday, my mother invited her friends, and I performed for them — reciting poetry or singing. There were no other children invited. We bathed once a week but used a bidet every day. No one had ever seen a shower; hair was washed once a month and rinsed with rainwater gathered into buckets sitting on our balcony. Mother had chamomile tea and lemon added to the water to make my hair shiny. When I was 6, I attended a lycée, with separate entrances for boys and girls. We all wore unattractive beige uniforms. I remember having to stand in line

to enter the classroom and the classes being very large. We each had our own desk with a lid. I learned to write with a fountain pen that I dipped into an inkwell. We made slanted lines and circles for pages and pages on lined workbooks to perfect our penmanship. Later that year, a brother appeared unannounced. My governess said that he was brought by a stork; the cook said she found him in a cabbage. My mother said he came out of her belly — the most unlikely of all the stories. I resented my brother. He was a beautiful baby, blonde and chubby, but mostly he was a boy. While he was admired and the center of attention, I stood on the periphery — a skinny, redheaded, freckled, invisible, sullen child. It wasn’t until we were adults that we became friends. “My Childhood in Paris” will continue in my next column. 29th LJ Festival of the Arts targets support for the city’s disabled

Nearly 200 artists will showcase their work before an expected 7,000 – and within a new Surf Culture theme – at the 29th annual La Jolla Festival of the Arts Saturday, June 20 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, June 21 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at UCSD's Warren Field The festival, jointly sponsored by Torrey Pines Kiwanis and San Diego Magazine, is an annual nonprofit Kiwanis effort to raise money for more than 30 groups that support the city's disabled. Kids can enjoy crafts, face painting and puppet shows, while dads can watch the U.S. Open and enjoy a
complimentary pint. Live music and entertainment will serve as backdrop for the festival's honorary ambassadors, world-renowned surf photographer Aaron Chang and legendary custom surfboard shaper Tim Bessell. Artists will exhibit their fare in painting, sculpture, photography, glass, jewelry, ceramics, wood, fiber and mixed media. Entertainment includes jazz guitarists Peter Sprague and Fred Benedetti.
