Gymnastics coach pleads guilty to sex with minor

By NEAL PUTNAM A 25-year-old gym coach pleaded guilty May 27 to having unlawful sexual relations with a teenage girl at La Jolla Shores.

Patrick Jay Wehrung was remanded into jail Friday after his guilty pleas once the prosecutor told the judge he was in violation of the no contact order with the victim. Wehrung had been free on $80,000 bond.

Sentencing was set for June 27 by San Diego Superior Court Judge Dan Link. Wehrung remains in the South Bay Detention Facility without bail.

Deputy District Attorney Nicole Roth said Tuesday Wehrung faces a maximum sentence of five years and four months in state prison. She said probation was not ruled out.

Wehrung pleaded guilty to committing unlawful sexual intercourse, oral copulation, and digital penetration with a minor. Nine other charges will be dismissed.

He met the 15-year-old girl at Champion Gymnastics & Cheer, a gym in Santee where he used to work. He was fired after his Feb. 9 arrest. All of the sexual activity took place in La Jolla.

MSMA's current president added other recent improvements made to the memorial site include bringing electricity to light its stairs and American flag, the repainting of its towering cross and renovation of the fence surrounding it.

The theme for this year's event was “If you love freedom, thank a veteran and our active military.”

“I'd like to remind everybody we all share this common reason for being here today: honoring the men and women who have honored, protected and served this great nation,” said master of ceremonies Marc Bailey, San Diego 6 TV anchor. “I can't think of a better place to do that than on this mountaintop.”

It was the largest crowd to ever attend a Memorial Day service on Mount Soledad, exceeding the turnout when San Diego Padres announcer and military fighter pilot Jerry Coleman was previously honored with a memorial plaque.

Mayor Kevin Faulconer and District 1 Councilwoman and Council President Sherri Lightner jointly presented a proclamation on behalf of the city honoring veterans and their service.

A memorial wreath was also presented to honor those who've paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Scripps Health opened the John R. Anderson V Medical Pavilion on June 1, a state-of-the-art $130 million outpatient clinic featuring 17 medical and surgical specialties including cardiology, neurology, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology, dermatology, nephrology and family medicine.

Medical services are being provided by Scripps Clinic Medical Group.

The Scripps outpatient center and one operated by Cedar Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles are the only ones in California operating full-service outpatient catheterization laboratories outside a hospital through special state legislation approved in 2012.

“The medical pavilion brings together exceptional physicians, staff and technology in a one-stopshop for comprehensive outpatient medical services,” Scripps Health president and CEO Chris Van said.

Located near the main entrance to the Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla campus, the seven-level, 175,000-square-foot building was constructed with the help of a $25 million donation from Eileen and John “Jack” R. Anderson IV. The clinic is named for their son.

Patients will have access to more than 50 physicians in an onstage/off-stage space configuration inspired by the Disney park design model that puts patients at the center of care activities in a comfortable environment while supporting efficient, collaborative work spaces for staff.

The center includes four outpatient cardiac catheterization laboratories made possible by passage of a state law making life-saving procedures such as stent and pacemaker implants more convenient and accessible to patients by allowing them to be performed in an outpatient facility.

Bike path upgrades, Taste at the Cove discussed at La Jolla Parks & Beaches

By DAVE SCHWAB Beach access, off-leash dogs on Fay Avenue bike path and the annual Taste at the Cove were vetted in May at La Jolla Parks & Beaches (LJPB).

Split a few years ago from La Jolla Town Council, nonprofit LJPB's mission is to preserve, protect and enhance La Jolla's shoreline parks and beaches.

Board member Sally Miller noted city officials came out recently to inspect the popular Fay Avenue bike path between La Jolla High School and Bird Rock.

“They're going to red curb so visibility will be better for cars parked close to the entrance and exit of the bike path,” said Miller. “They're also going to do ADA (disabled) ramps so path users won't have to go off the curb.”

Miller said dogs off-leash continue to be a high-profile problem along the popular community bike path.

“There's even a (path) sign that says, 'leash your dogs,' ” she said adding, “I rarely see a dog on a leash. It's very frustrating. There's no way to enforce it.”

Parks board members and audience members alike agreed it takes

too long for the city to do repairs of stairs leading down to La Jolla's beaches at numerous access points communitywide. The issue came up during discussion of needed repairs at the 100/202 Coast Blvd. Stairway.

“The city apparently has abandoned the idea of repairing the stairs saying they need to be rebuilt, even though that involves making it a capital improvement project (CIP) that would involve many years,” said board member Nancy Linck.

Council District 1 staffer Justin Garver noted “Public Works is looking into assessing whether the stairs could be repaired, or whether they

have to be rebuilt. We should give Public Works a chance to get back to us about what it would cost, and how long it would take.”

“Our beaches are more dangerous than ever,” noted parks board member Phyllis Minick adding beach access stairwells are sometimes broken and chipped, even without handrails. “We've asked to have them adjusted, and have been told if they (city) touch it, it has to be ADA compliant.”

“That's what I've been told,” concurred board chair Dan Allen.

The parks board unanimously approved the hosting of the annual

Taste at the Cove fundraising event benefiting San Diego Sports Medicine Foundation following a brief presentation by Dr. David Chao.

Chao noted proceeds from the annual event, to be held Thursday, Aug. 25 this year, will benefit injured youth with limited financial means. More than 5,000 student athletes have received free medical treatment over the years through the program. Taste at the Cove features food from San Diego's top-rated restaurants and includes a runway fashion show as well as silent and live auctions.

City Council bans Spice, bath salts

NOAA offers tips for safe viewing of seals and sea lions NOAA Fisheries is teaming up with several San Diego-area hotels to inform local residents and tourists how to enjoy San Diego’s stunning beaches without disturbing or harassing seals and sea lions that share the shore.

NOAA Fisheries has produced a public service announcement (PSA) with guidance on the best way to enjoy viewing the wildlife.

The NOAA PSA will be hosted on selected local hotels in San Diego, and available to conservation NGOs, tour operators and others to inform the public on proper marine

etiquette.

The campaign is especially timely following reports of sightseers getting dangerously close to marine mammals in the Children’s Pool area.

“This PSA informs those visiting the beach to avoid getting too close to seals or sea lions especially in the Children’s Pool area,” said Justin Viezbicke, NOAA Fisheries West Coast Region stranding coordinator.

“By giving the animals adequate space to rest and recover we are protecting them as much as ourselves and our pets.”

Harbor seals and sea lions come up on the sand to rest, modulate their body temperature, nurse their young or give birth. Although they may appear docile they can, like other wild animals, bite and carry diseases that may be contagious to pets.

Like other marine mammals, sea lions and harbor seals are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act, which makes it a federal offense to disturb them or do anything that may make them change their behavior.

Some of the tips are: n Keep your distance. You’re too

close if an animal starts to stare, fidget or flee. n Seals on land are especially wary and may rush into the water or abandon their pups, threatening their survival. n Keep pets away and on a leash.

Pets can disturb or harm wildlife or separate mothers from their pups.

If you see an injured or dead marine mammal, call 1-866-7676114. Experts will ask you about the location and condition of the animal.

The synthetic drugs in bath salts and the cannabinoid Spice – which have caused hundreds of overdoses – were banned Monday in an 8-0 vote by the San Diego City Council.

The drugs are sometimes sold in smoke shops or other small stores and also sold on the street. Some bath salts are sold under the label of potpourri or incense.

The possession, sale, distribution and manufacture of the items was declared a misdemeanor, and violators would be subject to six months in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.

“This is really important to my council district,” said Third District Councilmember Todd Gloria, who made the motion to declare the drugs illegal.

Gloria said the drug also adversely affects homeless people and that it “keeps people homeless” if they use it. Second District Councilmember Lorie Zapf seconded the motion.

Councilmember Marti Emerald was absent.

San Diego is the first city in the state to pass a law outlawing these synthetic drugs, according to City Attorney Jan Goldsmith. The state outlawed five versions of Spice in 2011, but chemists changed the way the drugs were made, and they were therefore not classified illegal.

The ordinance will require a second reading in June for it to become official, and it is expected to go into effect in July.

Scott Chipman, who represents San Diego for Safe Neighborhoods, said his group was “strongly in support” of the measure.

The use of these drugs is known to cause seizures, hallucinations, coma, vomiting, aggression, foaming at the mouth and death.

Rosenblatt ‘family’ includes sons, grandchildren and a lot of patients

By SANDY LIPPE When Jane Reilly opened the first Postal Annex in the USA in Marketplace Shopping Center in 1986, she went looking for a family dentist.

Ron Rosenblatt, a Cleveland native, had already been practicing since 1972. He welcomed her to "his family," as he referred to the staff and his patients. Reilly found the right match: good dental skills, funny sense of humor, and keen interest in the patient beyond dental needs.

"Ron was always caring, sensitive, and kind," Reilly said.

Rosenblatt has a contagious, raucous laugh and upbeat attitude.

These positive characteristics were tested in April 2015 when he was diagnosed with a cancerous brain lesion, liver and lung lesions. This cancer diagnosis blindsided him.

Reilly sat in on a recent interview of her favorite dentist, the father of two. Rosenblatt is proud of his two adult children: an attorney son Brett, and a director of commercials, Adam. Besides those two, he is a proud grandfather of 12.

Ron has four grandchildren and his wife, E.J. McDuffey, has eight.

Father's Day will be very special for the family this year.

The patriarch chose to leave the dental office for the last time on May 5, 2015. "I worked hard to build up a practice that originally had no patients," he said. "My partner, Dr. Andy Firtel, is doing a great job.

I was fortunate to bring him into the practice 16 years ago. There has been an outpouring of support from my former patients...cards, emails, phone calls."

ning Group for two years in the early days. "U.C. was supposed to be a bedroom community for UCSD. Originally a low-density shopping center was planned. The developers ruined it. I quit UCPG. I asked myself why am I coming here?"

Ohio State is his college alma mater and Case Western Dental School awarded him his doctor of dental surgery degree. From there he had an internship in Chicago at Michael Reese Hospital.

He was activated in the Navy, sent to Camp Pendleton Hospital for two years and then found University City in 1972. Most of his Midwestern

mentors couldn't wait to retire to Florida. Ron made sure he took the California dental boards early on so that he could live in beautiful San Diego all these years rather than just retire here.

His cancer diagnosis began with a slight tingly feeling in his hand. Two oncologists have worked with him.

His new vocabulary includes biopsies, radiation, chemotherapy and many words beginning "neuro..."

Still, he can make a joke about it.

"I'm the greatest patient because I'm in total denial," he laughs. "My recent scan says everything is holding. I feel great now...a little short-

ness of breath, muscle and joint pain, and I've gained 30 pounds. My oncologist said that I am her favorite patient because I don't complain about anything. " When Jean Rockwell, his former hygienist, reached her 20th year in the practice, Rosenblatt sent her and her husband to Paris. When his office manager Heather made the 20th anniversary, she and her husband got a trip to London. Pretty generous boss, right?

Jean had to take an early retirement in 2010 because of arthritis in her hands. Unfortunately, she contracted cancer in 2013 and lasted only 10

months. Going through chemotherapy, patients are asked at each daily visit their name and their birth date. It gets kind of old for the patients.

Rosenblatt, always the funny man, had a shirt made for her with her name on the top line, her birth date on the second line, and f**k cancer on the third line.

Two or three years ago he talked about retiring in the future. He never anticipated leaving so abruptly in 2015. It was all about the people for him and his practice: the staff and the patients. He is living in Encinitas now in a manufactured home in a 55-plus community with a salt water pool.

"I don't know what came over me.

I drove to the top of this park and saw this 2003 coach with solid wood floors, everything first class. I own the land. My wife and I love it."

His little grandson asked him “Papa, where's the steering wheel?" A kidder, a chip off the old block like his grandpa, the good Dr. Rosenblatt.

"That's my story," he said as he pushed back on his chair to get up.

"I've enjoyed U.C. Money never drove me. It was always about the people.

As long as I can grip a golf club...," he smiled. Reilly grinned at her favorite dentist and gave him a goodbye hug.

Mike Farrell speaks out in La Jolla against death penalty

By MANNY LOPEZ Actor and long-time human rights activist Mike Farrell was recently in San Diego at the La Jolla home of Bill and Michelle Lerach nto raise funds and awareness about The Justice That Works Act of 2016, an initiative on the November ballot that if passed, will abolish the death penalty in California and convert the sentences of every death row inmate to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Dozens of community members attended the paid event on May 20, to hear the acclaimed actor best known for his eight years on the hit TV show “M*A*S*H” as Capt. B.J. Honeycutt, and five seasons on “Providence” as Dr. Jim Hansen.

“The death penalty demeans us all,” Farrell said. “We can protect ourselves from people who act out violently by imprisoning them, and

if necessary, without the possibility of ever being released. But we shouldn’t stoop to the level of murderer by murdering, and that's something that I think is very important.”

The initiative’s declarations identify the death penalty as a "failed government program that wastes taxpayer dollars,” and asserts that over 150 innocent people have been sentenced to death in the United States and several innocent people have been executed.

The measure also restates existing law that requires all incarcerated murderers work, and that up to 60 percent of earned wages be

appropriated for victim restitution.

Farrell said that since the state reinstated capital punishment in 1978, more than 850 people have been sentenced to death, but only 13 people have been executed during that period. He added that the average time from sentencing to execution takes about 25 years. Executions in California are currently on hold because of lethal injection litigation.

According to the California Department of Corrections, there have been a total of 103 non-execution deaths since 1978. Of those, 70 were from natural causes, 25 from suicide and eight were described as other. Two California inmates were executed in other states bringing the total number of executions to 15.

What does this year’s presidential race say Soroptimist International of La Jolla is ‘best for women’ about our country?

With the presidential primary on June 7, we wondered what people were thinking

Nothing will get done. The public is fed up with Washington, and that’s why Trump got the nomination.

Dean Bone: I’m 66, and I have yet to see them [in Washington] solve any problems. We’re as smart as they are. We can vote online. We don’t need representatives, we need a true democracy. If I had to, I would vote Bernie.

James Kahn: It’s pathetic, the demise of our culture. Trump is a bum in a fancy suit. The lower and middle classes feel betrayed.

Everyone loves a winner and he portrays himself as a winner. But Trump is a nasty guy.

Soroptimist International of La Jolla is a nonprofit organization focused on helping women and girls with services running the gamut from resource for sexually abused women to recognition of high school girls’ work for charity.

Jean Kauth McGrath, former president of the group, joined Soroptimist because she felt that membership in a group would help her contribute more.

“We are hands-on people,” she says; “all money goes to charity.

It’s really rewarding to be a soroptimist,” loosely translated from a Latin word meaning “best for women.” Soroptimist International has 80,000 members in 132 countries. The La Jolla group was founded in 1947.

Reboot, a service group with which Soroptimist has partnered,

helps deployed female military personnel through a three-week training program on what to expect in life after the military.

“Women in the military face the same issues as men do,” Soroptimist La Jolla President Bonnie Mendenhall said; “they are sent where the military wants them to go, and often, they have to leave their children and their family members.”

On Saturday, June 11, the group will hold its first Bucket List Bash, a fundraiser supporting Reboot’s mentor program. The event will take place 6:30 p.m. at Birch Aquarium, 2300 Expedition Way. San Diego has the highest North American incidence of homeless veterans. Studies show that women veterans, who number 12 percent of the military population, face greater challenges than their male counterparts.

Former state assemblywoman and current San Diego mayoral candidate, Lori Saldana, said that she voted to abolish the death penalty for juveniles and make changes to incarceration, because it costs too much.

“We're already paying $50,000 to $60,000 or more annually per year per death row inmate,” she said. “It's certainly more than we pay for education and it makes more sense financially to have them there for life without the possibility for parole. It’s time for change for so many reasons.”

Among the guests for the event was Uriah Courtney, an exoneree, who in 2005 was wrongfully accused, and convicted of kidnapping, rape and robbery of a minor.

After a three-week trial, he was sentenced to life in prison, and served eight years and four months before

DNA evidence showed that a person with a prior record of similar crimes, who fit the description of the perpetrator and resided near the crime scene, was the actual donor.

“I'm here in support of the abolition of the death penalty, because it's a proven fact that innocent people have been convicted, and executed for crimes that they didn't commit,” Courtney said. “One innocent person being executed is too many. It's immoral and unjust.”

Quentin Mecke, deputy campaign manager for Justice that Works, said that the United States is the only developed Western nation that still executes its own people and that of the 190 countries recognized by the United Nations, 130 believe the death penalty to be inappropriate, and a fundamental violation of the rights of those who have been condemned. Quentin added that the U.S. ranks fifth in executions behind China, Iran, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

Lerach stated that there have

been literally hundreds of people who were proven to have been innocent, who have spent years in jail as a result of a system that is supposed to be dedicated to fairness and justice.

He said that a judge who is a highly educated individual and a graduate of law school presided over every single one of those trials where an innocent person was convicted.

He called it a disgrace and said that the way to end that disgrace is to get rid of the death penalty.

On May 19, the Californians for Death Penalty Reform and Savings campaign submitted more than 585,000 signatures across the state to qualify a competing initiative for the November ballot aimed to reduce the amount of time convicts spend on death row before being executed and the burden taxpayers spend on housing them. The measure is broadly supported by prosecutors.

Positive nonverbal communication may increase happiness Doing it Better

By Natasha Josefowitz, Ph.D. When we think of communication, we assume two or more people talking or writing to each other. Nonverbal communication occurs often unconsciously, sometimes reinforcing what we say and sometimes belying it; for instance, shouting loudly “I am not angry” is an example of noncongruent communication. Up to 80 percent of our communication is nonverbal. We send and receive subliminal messages whenever we are with others.

Already at 3 months of age, an infant boy when shown a new object will become more active, kicking and gurgling. An infant girl will become quiet,

stare intently and generally have a longer attention span. Baby boys will do more grabbing at toys than girls, and boys are more restless in all cultures. This has to do with the amount of testosterone absorbed in utero: A female fetus receiving testosterone will exhibit the same restless behavior, whereas boys will be more passive if getting estrogen. In other words, there is already a form of communication that parents will respond to, either by encouraging activity or thwarting it depending on both cultural norms, societal expectations and personal tolerance.

These are unconscious manifestations of body postures and movement. As children grow, boys tend to play outdoors, make rules, play games that have winners and losers. Girls, on the other hand, tend to prefer to play indoors with a best friend, take turns, talk, tell secrets. How does all this translate into today’s communication patterns? In a Harvard University study, MRIs show that women have 14 to 16 areas of the brain to evaluate others’ behaviors; men have only four to six areas.

Women can read a situation presented to them in a short film accurately 87 percent of the time, while men have only 47 percent accuracy. Women are better able than men to spot the contradictions between someone’s words and their body language.

Women on average can juggle more unrelated topics at one time than men can. Women’s peripheral vision extends to at least 45 degrees on each side, above and below; men’s vision is much poorer. In addition, women have a keen eye for details. In order to care for children, women need to observe nonverbal signals. So what we have called “women’s intuition” is really hard-wired in women’s brains, giving them an advantage in picking up cues and clues not easily noticed by men.

While we have little control over our genetic dispositions, we can become more aware of the nonverbal messages we send and

What I also find interesting is that our own nonverbal messages to ourselves can have a large impact on our moods and perceptions. According to Dr. Gregory Fricchione of Massachusetts General Hospital, we can consciously affect our moods with our body posture. There is a feedback loop between our brain and our body whereby we can control our emotional states through physical actions. Let’s examine three strategies to create a positive mood and increase confidence and energy: 1. Gait: Walking on a treadmill in a depressed way with shoulders slumped will increase negative thoughts, whereas working out with shoulders back and arms swaying will increase the recall of happy events.

3. Facial expression: Smiling, even a fake smile, will make the brain believe something good is happening and will lift up your mood.

So pay attention to how you sit, stand and walk. Become more aware of your facial expressions and body language.

You will not only communicate what you intend — you will start believing it yourself. This is particularly important on a first date or if you want to make a specific impression on a recruiter in a job interview, so decide ahead of time what you really wish to convey, and act accordingly.

Teamwork makes everything sing, Bishop’s volleyballer says

By ED PIPER Having been to the prom the night before, and with a volleyball playoff game scheduled later in the day, Nico Langlois is playing it pretty cool. He looks rested and is animated in a conversation about his activities and outlook.

One is impressed with his maturity. In response to a question about his views on the increasing sophistication of high school and club sports and the resulting pressure on student-athletes and their families to land college athletic scholarships, the 16-year-old says: “I can only speak from my experience. Here at Bishop’s, you’d never hear, ‘Don’t go to class,’ (go train more for your sport). With (volleyball coach) Jackie (Bernardin), no. The coaches are really conscientious here.”

He blends an interest in the linear nature of math with his passion for singing in the school choir. The common denominator between The Bishop’s Singers and being an outside hitter on the volleyball team is the opportunity to work as part of a team.

“In choir,” he explains, “everyone has a separate part, but it fits together.” The Knights’ volleyball team has only eight players this year – six play at a time – and “we’re short.” Nico measures only 6’0” as an outside hitter, going up against opponents much taller. “It’s an uphill battle,” he says without intending the pun. “You have to keep your morale up, don’t get down on yourself.”

He cites La Jolla High and Dane Pieper, who measures 6’1”, but the Vikings can also go up to 6’6” on the front line. That’s part of the joy of studying at Bishop’s – whether it’s the football team, with several players playing on both platoons, or the volleyball team, with only two players to rotate in, the Knights have to be “one for all, all for one.”

He learned French “with a French accent” by attending the French-American School in La Jolla his elementary years, and he’s French-Canadian through his Montreal-born father J.C. His travel and study have enabled him to add Spanish to his language arsenal. He spent a month in Spain a couple of years ago, plus “we traveled all over Europe. My mom (Karen) likes to travel. My dad’s mom is German. She immigrated to Quebec in the 1950s with her family. She was 15.”

Though Langlois has only been in one theater production at school, he made the most of it. It came during his sophomore year. In the musical “Rent,” he played a junkie.

person, it’s hard to imagine him as a hard-pedaling drug user.

Told that he’s so engaged in conversation despite being a math wonk, the potential McGill University matriculant responds, “That’s because I’m with The Bishop’s Singers. I’m a tenor. What do we sing? Everything.

“We just had a choir director change (the longtime director retired after 25 years). I don’t know the theme of our music. We sing nice music. ‘The Earth Song,’ for example. There are about 20 students in our group. Could I see studying music as a minor in college? Probably. It’s one of my passions.

“With the choir,” he continues, “it’s really fun when the group can sound like one unit. Everyone has a separate part, but it fits together.”

Asked about the difference between his position in volleyball as an outside hitter and a middle hitter-blocker, he explains, “It’s a consistency thing. Inherently, to get a good pass at the middle position is difficult. You can set outside all the time, whereas to the middle about 20 percent of the time, because it’s harder to get the perfect pass.”

Informed of the view of U.S. Olympic soccer head coach Jurgen Klinsmann that developing athletes should be trained in a sports academy setting instead of playing for a school team, Langlois is thoughtful.

“My parents have brought me up with a focus on priorities,” he says.

“Education is very important. But they will support me in whatever I do. If I said I want to be a pro basketball player, a crazy idea, I think my mom would support me. It’s however far the kid wants to take it.”

The pressure and competition for college volleyball scholarships? “I know Dane (Pieper). He plays for Coast, right? They (Dane and Jake Northrup, his La Jolla teammate and fellow hitter) work really hard.

If Dane can use his volleyball skills to get into an institution, good for them. If you work hard and you enjoy the sport, then go for it.”

Big save, big mouth fuel Nguyen’s claim to La Jolla High School’s soccer fame

By ED PIPER Tai Nguyen, goalkeeper for La Jolla High School’s CIF championship soccer team, makes a startling admission about his save in the shootout that won the semifinal game at Serra.

“I blacked out,” says the eccentric junior. “After the ball touched my glove, I blinked. Everything stopped.

“When I woke up, the guys were celebrating. I saw the ball rolling away.”

Not too many sports heroes would confess that they weren’t eyes-open alert at the moment of their greatest athletic achievement.

But the admission comes with a sincere credit to his teammates for setting up the situation: “The penalty shooters made all of their shots (in the shootout, which followed overtime) so I could do what I did,” asserted the 17-year-old, who plans to play for a Premiere club team next year in addition to returning for his senior season for the Vikings.

After the initial five-shot phase of the penalty kick format – with La Jolla and the Conquistadors alternating shots one by one – the two teams had to go to additional kickers to break the hour-and-a-half deadlock. That meant, with the Vikings kicking first and having netted their sixth straight kick, a block by Nguyen on Serra would mean automatic victory.

the shot. The ball dribbled away harmlessly, and Viking players streamed midfield to mob Nguyen and celebrate their ticket into the finals, which they won three days later.

For a moment, Nguyen sat stunned before being embraced by his teammates.

It was all in a day in the life of a unique, athletic high school student who has focused his energies on becoming a better soccer keeper.

As head coach Marcos Gonzales, who tends to understate things, has observed: “He has a personality.” In other words, he’s quite a character.

“He says things.”

But Nguyen wasn’t giving a hint of an unorthodox mind. Goalies are known for standing apart, showing their independence. They want to be known by their teammates as reliable, but they are the only ones who have to face the rest of the team and even try to block their shots in practice.

At practice, “I like to make it fun.

Some (teammates) come to practice tired. Make some jokes, then it’ll relax them.”

As a person, he wants to be approachable. “I try and stay positive,” he says. “I don’t want to be the guy, ‘he’s mad,’ ‘he’s sad.’ I want to be the one they can approach,

talk to. Tell some jokes. Get them to relax.”

His mother Joy, on the other hand, is “pretty serious. She works in real estate. I guess in that job you have to stay serious.”

His own yelling is an outlet, and it serves a strategic purpose on the team in his role as keeper: “It’s fun.

You have to yell. I’m always talking.

I can’t always yell (in other settings), but when I get on the field I can let it all out.”

Besides his mother Joy and stepdad Robert, Nguyen has two brothers, Kwan, 13, an eighth-grader, and Jae, 9, a first-grader. “I’m the sporty guy in the family,” the big brother says. “One is a dancer.

That’s Kwan. Jae is an artsy guy.”

In La Jolla’s march to the title, all the while playing on other schools’ fields due to this year’s construction work on Edwards Stadium, the team rose to the occasion and vanquished Crawford in a second-round match after receiving a bye in the first round. The Vikings beat the Colts 10 in a game played at Mission Bay, though it was designated La Jolla’s home game.

The win at Serra followed. “We were supposed to be home,” remembers Nguyen, shaking his head. La Jolla held the higher seed and would have hosted the game at La Jolla but for the ongoing construction. “Their crowd was making more and more noise.”

Expansion is key at this year’s La Jolla fashion film fest Fashion Files

The La Jolla International Fashion Film Festival is adding some new elements for its seventh annual installment, to take place Thursday through Saturday, July 28 to 30, at the Museum of Contemporary Art, 700 Prospect St. in La Jolla.

The first new item, to be unveiled July 28, includes a series of art installations with international creators, featuring San Franciscobased Mexican artist Antonio Contreras, who won the festival’s Best Actor award in 2015 for “Ay Jose.”

His artwork includes a collection of three 9-foot by 11-foot murals representing his fashion legacy. The first pays homage to fresco painter Diego Rivera, with costumes by Benito Santos. The second is a tribute to Europe, with homage to Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dali and including clothing by European designers such as Coco Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli and Christian Dior. The third represents the United States, specifically the Golden Age of Cinema and Tom Ford, Contreras’ favorite American

designer, with Madonna’s song “Vogue” as backdrop.

The multi-talented Contreras has been creating artwork since age 10.

The process he uses for creating the murals begins with the concept drawn on paper and then enlarging the picture. The next step is painting with watercolors and treating them like oils by adding very little water. The last coat is done with acrylics. I asked him how long the process takes and he said, “The first mural took 80 hours to finish.” These pieces of artwork will be displayed outside the Festival and will be interactive as they may be

used as a media wall.

I asked Contreras about “All about J,” his new film for the festival. “This will be a world premiere,” he said, “and is an international collaboration with Mercedes Benz Fashion Week on Mexico City. It is about a famous movie star, played by Rhodessa Jones, who has an affair with her co-star, and from there everything goes awry.”

Developments for this year’s festival also include a video installation, along with vintage costuming, from the iconic world of Hollywood fashion. There also will be a world premiere of a 3-D Brazilian film. Look

Longi and Ethan Pernela (violas), Chia-Ling Chien (cello), Sarah Skuster (oboe) and Julie Smith Phillips (harp) played “lost” USSRdisapproved composer Nikolay Andreyevich Roslavets’ brief, impressionistic “Nocturne” from 1913.

San Diego Symphony should be proud indeed of the players fielded here. They hold their own compared with the international artists heard earlier. I overheard one excited audience member ask when the 201617 chamber series would be announced. The answer was “soon.”

By MARTIN JONES WESTLIN The fallout from La Jolla’s first recorded nuclear explosion, which devastated the 1250 block of Prospect Street as early as February amid a wholesale facade reconstruction project, may soon be lifting. The Hake Kitchen & Bar, which quickly became known for its California-centric dishes, has already announced that it’ll reopen June 27, replete with an outdoor deck and an expanded drinks list; iconic Africa and Beyond, the go-to place for African art and textiles, never really closed. For the moment, though, the whole block still looks like a displaced hospital, with its family of burly refurbishers hanging off rafters and scaffolding like so many critical patients.

Donovan’s Steak & Chop House, long an area fixture before its 2014 transfer from Westfield UTC Mall, isn’t about to let a little multimilliondollar facelift get in its way. It opened

in January of 2015 in the space occupied by Steakhouse Azul La Jolla, only to encounter the current facelift’s aftereffects several months later – but it’s holding its own right now against a sea of obstacles from all that rebuilding. The best steakhouse in town is still the best steakhouse in town, and when the dust clears, its name recognition will only recrystallize in the public mind.

A few little zigs and zags off Prospect places you in an atmosphere of high-end refinement, with expansive views of La Jolla Cove just steps away and first-class service even nearer. A recent lunch brought an excursion off the beaten path, with seafood the order of the day even as USDA prime holds sway here. The Alaskan Red King Crab Legs are as fat and juicy as you are, and the dipping sauce is so plentiful that you could take it home as a separate meal. Meanwhile, the Blackened Salmon Caesar comes with deviled eggs, an ingenious choice for a side.

It might be raining hammers and nails outside, but at Donovan’s Steak and Chop House, everything’s sunny indoors.

And don’t overlook the less obvious items on this menu. Ahi tuna, barbecue beef, crab cake, steak and bacon: All make perfectly fine sandwiches, and each is prepared with as large an eye for detail as the next.

A 16-ounce ribeye will cater to the

most ravenous appetite (or two), while a lettuce wedge with bleu cheese is designed to satisfy the daintier sensibility. See? There really is more to this venue than its name, whatever its stock in trade may suggest. And to boot, it has locations in

the Gaslamp Quarter and Phoenix.

Meanwhile, this facelift will make the 1250 Prospect segment of La Jolla Cove much cooler – something about the Village’s height restrictions made the pre-construction strip look splay and squat and old and nondescript, like a doddering aunt frantically bending the ear of any relative who’d listen.

The new facade will bring a certain uniformity to the area, making things easy on the eyes and inviting to the consumer’s imagination – and Donovan’s, amid its considerable history and presence and variety, will be there every step of the way.

“We tried it and, even though we weren't big ice cream people, we came back every single day for ice cream,” Trang said. “We thought, 'This is something really special.' ” Trang, who had been in the health care industry and had a small child, was looking to change careers.

Her husband, Ryan, is in real estate.

“We wanted to figure out a way where we could work together as a team, allowing me to work from home,” she said. “We thought, 'Why not an ice cream shop?' We really loved this product. It is near and dear to us. And we really love Hawaii. We

found a way to be the only distributor in Southern California.”

Speaking of flights of ice cream, Hammond's has adapted the concept for the ice cream industry to allow people to sample more flavors at once. A flight is six mini cones.

New tech startup moves to La Jolla

A Silicon Valley startup is moving to La Jolla and plans to change the city's tech industry.

Bizness Apps is a do-it-yourself mobile application maker for small businesses that originated in the dorm rooms of California State University at Chico.

CEO Andrew Gazdecki said he was tired of seeing businesses overpaying for applications and struggling to get them to function effectively.

Following a successful start in San Francisco and being named one

of the fastest-growing companies in America two years in a row, the company decided to move to San Diego, or as Gazdecki calls it “the tech haven of tomorrow.”

Skaggs gamily gives $2M for TSRI grad program endowment The Skaggs family has given a new $2 million gift to support students in The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) graduate program.

Praying mantises religiously give pests the boot (Editor’s note: Linda decided to republish this article from several years ago after being contacted about it by a UCSD student.)

Last winter, I purchased a praying mantis egg sac for my garden.

In all the years I’ve lived in San Diego, I’ve never seen a praying mantis in my garden, and I thought it would be fun to see how beneficial it might be. In recent years, my garden has been plagued with walking sticks and grasshoppers that have a taste for every plant I grow. I was hopeful that if the eggs hatched, maybe the praying mantises would put a dent in the large, pesky bug population in my garden.

I placed the mantis egg sac on a branch of a large camellia bush, leaving it encased in the plastic mesh bag it came in. The sac should be suspended from a branch, away from ants and hidden in the leaves from birds. It should also be kept outside to adapt to our climate, since the baby praying mantises will emerge from their sacs in about three weeks after the outside temperatures reach around 70 degrees.

In late June, I was working in the garden and noticed a tiny insect sitting in the center of a Shasta daisy. Since grasshoppers have been quite successful at raising their families in my garden, at first glance I thought it was a baby grasshopper. Luckily, I realized the ant-size insect was actually a baby mantis before the tiny creature ended up between my thumb and forefinger.

Each praying mantis egg sac encloses about 200 eggs. The tiny young, referred to as nymphs, will emerge from the sac, scatter into the garden and immediately begin eating. While they start off with a voracious appetite, eating aphids

and other small insects, they also can fall prey to predatory insects when they are this small.

One day, I removed a tiny mantis from a hungry spider’s web just before it became lunch and placed it on a rosebush. As months went by, this tiny creature stayed on the same rosebush and has now grown into quite a specimen, measuring about five inches long.

Females are said to stay contently in one place as long as there is food, and the males will wander here and there throughout the garden.

There are 2,000 species of praying mantis throughout the world, with about 200 of them living in the United States. They will take about four to six months to mature, and as they grow, they will molt and shed their skin, which prompted one of my gardeners to worry that a particular mantis had died. Clearly upset, he brought the empty skin to me, telling me that one of my new “pets” had perished.

We went to look at the rosebush he found the skin in, and sure enough, we found the mantis, now much larger and still sitting in her favorite bush.

The mantis will shed its skin five or more times during its growth period, and during its final molting, it will emerge with wings.

Right now, all of my praying mantises appear to have their wings, and we think there are about 12 of them happily living and feasting in my garden.

A territorial insect, each mantis will stake out its own area of the garden, and it is rare to find more than one on a single plant, unless it is fall and the mating season has begun. Mantises have 10 eyes that can see color and distances up to 60 feet away, and

their heads can look over their shoulders, moving about 180 degrees. When I get close to them, they slowly turn their heads to look at me.

Masters of disguise, the mantises’ green or light brown coloring allows them to blend in seamlessly with their surroundings, which enables them to grab unsuspecting insects who venture too close.

With a motionless prayerlike stance, the mantis can strike at its prey with lighting-fast precision, grabbing it with long, spiky forearms.

Great to have in the garden, they feed on most harmful plant pests, including aphids, thrips, whitefly, mosquitoes, flies, grubs, beetles, caterpillars, leafhoppers, grasshoppers, crickets and, hopefully, walking sticks. It may take another season to see if they are feeding on the pesky walking sticks, and if I find they are, I will let everyone know.

The only problem may be that praying mantises are active during the day and the walking sticks are nocturnal eaters. I am hopeful that if a walking stick crosses paths with a praying mantis, the

walking stick will become a midnight snack. I have noticed fewer grasshoppers in the garden lately since the mantises have taken up residence.

Since they are not long-distance travelers, the mantises will live and die close to the area in the garden where they were born. In the fall, the female will lay her eggs and encase them with a liquid she produces that will harden and form the sac. Females can produce one to five walnut-size sacs, or ootheca. Sadly, my family of mantis friends will die within the first year of their lives, usually about three weeks after their eggs have been laid. Hopefully, next spring, their eggs will hatch, and the life cycle will begin again with a new family of mantises hunting in my garden.

Most nurseries stock mantis egg sacs in late winter and early spring, before the weather gets too warm. Some nurseries store them in refrigerators. One egg sac is said to cover 5,000 square feet.

The praying mantis, along with other beneficial insects, help to rid our environment of garden pests, and therefore, it is essential not to

use pesticides, or they, too, will perish along with the unwanted bugs.

A healthy garden has both good and bad insects, and by not using poisons, we are promoting a healthy balance, not perfection, so all creatures, including humans, can thrive. The Greek word for “mantis” means prophet, and maybe it was named because of the blessings your garden will have if the insects are found residing there, not to mention the good fortune of creating a cleaner, healthier environment.

Update: When the praying mantis are around, there have been fewer walking sticks. While they have laid their eggs here in the garden in the past, it seems like every three years I need to purchase another egg sac.

La Jolla High looks to enhance Viking Plaza with mosaic crest

By LAINIE FRASER The Foundation of La Jolla High School has created a GoFundMe in an attempt to raise funds for an artistic element for their new stadium.

With the opening of the stadium on schedule for this fall, the school was presented with an opportunity to enhance Viking Plaza, a new entryway connecting the stadium to the campus.

“We were given this unique offer by the architects to make an artistic contribution to the walkway,” said Beth Penny, president of Foundation of La Jolla High School. “We simply could not pass that up because of a lack of funding.”

According to Penny, they unanimously decided to contact Jane Wheeler, a local artist known for her hand crafted mosaic bench artwork in Bird Rock. Wheeler has been praised for her work around the city and has completed projects with schools in the community before.

Wheeler was ecstatic to begin the project and almost immediately created a mosaic crest rendering for the project.

According to La Jolla High athletics director Paula Conway, the foundation does plenty of fundraising throughout the year for a variety of projects not paid for by the school district, including sports-related events.

“We are always trying to find creative and innovative ways to promote the needs of the school in a way that is appealing to our community," Penny said.

Developing a GoFundMe seemed like a creative and efficient way to raise the money they needed.

“Not only is GoFundMe a well recognized and trusted national brand for online crowd funding, but it is based in our home of San Diego,” Penny said. “Our hope with it is that we could extend our message beyond the immediate doors of the high school and appeal further into the community.

media to reach those who would be interested in giving a little or a lot either to the school or because they love Jane Wheeler’s work or even simply just love La Jolla,” she said.

The school’s GoFundMe account has been up and running for nearly three weeks and has received more than $4,000. With a goal of $6,000, Penny expects they will meet that goal in no time thanks to the generous community members who have always supported the school and the athletic department

for the 94 years it has been open.

Any funds raised that surpass the GoFundMe goal will be used to beautify the remainder of the stadium through projects such as painting the stands, building a press box and installing a new sound system.

Remaining funds will assist any other unfunded projects the school may be interested in.

Preuss School student awarded Gates Millennium Scholarship

Rotary Clubs help out Marines Rotary Club of La Jolla recently joined forces with La Jolla Golden Triangle and Miramar Rotary clubs to restore and enhance recreational facilities for Marines stationed at Miramar. San Diego nonprofit Reality Changers has announced that Preuss School senior and Reality Changers graduate Tatiana Jones was awarded the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship, which covers full tuition costs from undergraduate to doctorate or medical degrees for minority students majoring in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) subjects.

The award is granted to only 1,000 students across the United States each year.

“Being a Gates Millennium Scholar has showed me that there are no limits to what I can accomplish in life as a minority,” says Jones. “I am so blessed to have received this honor and can now put my parents’ hearts at ease knowing I will be able to fulfill my dreams of furthering my education with no financial burden."

Jones will attend Syracuse University this fall to study forensic science. She started FANCY (Focused and Naturally Confident Youth), a student organization at Preuss designed to uplift, motivate and inspire young women. Jones and her peers identify and discuss teen issues

such as self-esteem, depression, body and body image.

“FANCY at Preuss became the gateway to future women leaders and spread hope and direction from one culture to another,” says Jones.

“I hope that women of color can be proud of who they are.”

This award brings Reality Changers to the $100 million mark in generating scholarship money for local high school seniors who will be the first in their families to attend college. Three hundred students this year alone have earned $25 million in scholarships.

Charter School expanding mental heath plan The Charter School of San Diego, which serves students from grades 712 at risk of dropping out, has announced it is expanding a mental health training program for teachers and school leaders. Working in partnership with the San Diego Police Department, the City of San Diego and the Social Advocates for Youth, more teachers will be trained on the signs of mental health issues in students, enabling them to intercede and get students the help and resources they need before a crisis occurs.

MiraMesa-based Charter School, flagship school in Altus Schools, which serve approximately 8,000 atrisk students throughout five counties, is expanding the program fol-

lowing a successful two-year initiative funded by a federal grant. As the only charter school to receive the $100,000 expansion grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the school has trained nearly 300 teachers and community leaders to respond to mental health and substance abuse crises since 2014.

Following expenditure of the grant in September, the school will continue the mental health training program by absorbing the cost into its budget.

Altus Schools combined serve the largest number of 6th- through 12th-grade students at risk of dropping out in San Diego County.

“The waves, the coastline, the reefs, the rocks up against the ocean, the little nooks and crannies: I learned to photograph all of those,” said Goulding, whose love for the ocean is partly a byproduct of his being a professional body boarder in the early '90s.

“I got into photography in the late '80s and I would shoot shore-break stuff back then, and it was difficult shooting with film,” Goulding recalled, noting his personal background has been anything but orthodox.

den where I joined a Swedish-American punk rock band, Pridebowl,” he said. “We were the first punk rock band to ever tour in China.”

But Goulding has since settled down, or at least settled in one place, La Jolla, where he now lives with his wife and three children.

Speaking of his new art gallery, and his motivation behind creating it, Goulding said, “This town needs a gallery where people can find local imagery. I want to show the world what I have seen for the past 25 years in and around the ocean – all the beautiful sunsets and sunrises

The surf photographer said his new La Jolla gallery has a small backroom where he's set up a fully furnished portrait studio “not only for myself, but to rent it out to other businesses and photographers.”

Goulding said one dream he'd like to fulfill with his new art gallery is to “have Santa Claus around Christmastime in the backroom taking his picture with everybody in San Diego.”

Moving to La Jolla was a no-brainer for the surf photographer.

“It's pretty breathtaking where we live – paradise,” Goulding noted.

“This is my home. I see why Dr. Seuss loved it.”

Goulding's new art gallery is in addition to his smaller studio space, which he's been operating for years at 1255 Coast Blvd.

Specializing in surf, scenic, portrait and underwater photography, Goulding's clientele has varied from high-profile celebrities to advertisers, magazines and, what he describes as, “just regular folks looking for a good portrait.”

Goulding said his life thus far has been so interesting that “I've retired early and am going to live my life backwards. He added, “I'm OK with the path of life I chose. At the same time, I'm doing everything in my power to live my dream.”

Local students earn accolades at excellent ceremony

By ANNA JENSEN The 10th annual Salute to Excellence ceremony honored more than 75 high school seniors who are considered to be in the top 1 percent out off all seniors in San Diego at SeaWorld on Wednesday, May 25.

Of those honored at last week’s event, local students named were Kyra Forsyth (Mission Bay High), Dan Tran (Mission Bay High), Clay Halbert (La Jolla High), and Dalton Omens (Point Loma High). For these four students, obtaining excellence was not an easy task.

With demanding schedules,

and some of the highest grade point averages in their classes, these students worked hard to get where they are today.

“Receiving this honor is amazing and I'm so happy that all the work I've put in has paid off,” Forsyth said. “It's really cool to not only be recognized for my work, but to also see other people who have put in just as much, and in some cases more, work than I have.”

In addition to their academia, all four have participated in an extracurricular activity, such as sports or mock trials, college courses or Boy Scouts. All the students said the key to balanc-

ing a busy schedule is planning.

“Determination and willingness to continue even though one has already been working for hours is essential to getting to participate in several things,” said Halbert.

For these students, this award is more than just a recognition of their work.

“This honor reminds me to work even harder in college to be successful in life,” Tran said.

“It also reminds me how I can make use of my talents to efficiently gain control in my life.”

The four all have high aspirations. Forsyth wants to be a geneticist, Omens wants to be

an animator for Disney, Halbert wants to be a physics professor or an attorney, and Tran wants to become a computer programer or a math teacher. All four of these kids are UC bound (UCSD, UC Berkeley, and UCLA) and ready to take on the world one well-planned day at a time.

“The hard work, stamina and dedication of these students is truly amazing,” said Hans Becker, principal at Point Loma High School. “I am honored to support these students and look forward to their exciting futures.

They are wonderful examples of what we call, ‘The Pointer Way.’”

Coalition urges SANDAG to spend tax dollars on communities’ needs People from around San Diego and members of the Quality of Life coalition recently called on the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) to prioritize mass transit projects before it asks voters to support a raise in the county sales tax.

The coalition represents more than 20 community-based, regional organizations and 150,000 San Diego residents.

San Diego residents and com-

munity leaders urged SANDAG to prioritize funding for projects that promote clean air, better transit, good jobs and no-cost youth bus passes.

Community leader Maria Cortez said, “Bus passes increase access to jobs, healthcare (and) participation in their faith communities, and (they teach) youth how to be independent. These youth could be any one of you. Who knows; they could become our next

council members, superintendents and mayors.”

The rally preceded a crucial vote that took place last month, when SANDAG decided on transportation projects to be funded by a half-cent sales tax ballot initiative proposed for November. If the ballot measure passes, voters have the opportunity to generate San Diego transportation funding for the next 40 years.

Coalition leaders also high-

lighted the overwhelming support needed for a tax measure to win at the ballot box.

“We want to work with SANDAG, but they can’t win a tax measure without broad community support. If voters are asked to support a half-cent sales tax, SANDAG must show that it understands the issues that voters care about," said Nicole Capretz, executive director of the Climate Action Campaign.

As the penalty kicks unfolded, Nguyen says, “I was trying to read the shooters.” Then the sixth kicker for the Conquistadors, Richard Gaeta, lined up his shot a distance in front of the goal. As Nguyen relates, he blanked out during the shot – possibly from the intensity of the moment – and came out successfully on the other side.

Looking ahead to next year, he has dual reasons for being excited, coming on the heels of the first CIF boys soccer championship for La Jolla since 1998. One, the Vikings return a talented bunch. Nguyen ticks off the names of the returnees. Lewis qualified for the U.S. soccer academy, so he appears to be headed to that.

But Cesar Canton, a quick striker, will play for the Aztecs club and La Jolla’s school team.

Estrella will return, as well as Furlanis, who plays center midfielder, Romano at right back and Max Leonard, a right midfielder. Mason Matalon, a sophomore, is another.

The second reason for Nguyen’s enthusiasm is the refurbished stadium. A new surface is being installed on the Edwards field. New facilities will house the Vikings’ new weight room, a new boys locker room, coaches’ offices, a concession stand and a press box. Construction appears to be on schedule, with word of the field being ready for play in August for the Viking football team’s preseason practice.

Nguyen and his fellow juniors will get to play their senior seasons in the new sports complex.
