La Jolla condo listed at $10.12 million If sold, will hold SD record

University City man to be sentenced for selling guns, heroin

A new luxury residential project, Muse La Jolla, is reaching the conclusion of renovation and construction. Located at 1020 Prospect St., it sits snugly at the iconic intersection of Prospect and Girard.

The building used to be the Prospect Center, which contained law firms, financial advisors, and a contemporary art gallery. It was sold to Hammer Ventures in 2015 for $27.9 million.

A sales center and model home are now open for Muse La Jolla. The final product is a reimagination of the old concrete and glass of the Prospect Center with a modernist influence. The four-story construct houses 16 residential units, including one-, two- and three-bedroom floor plans starting at $2.7 million.

Arguably the crown jewel of the building is the 3,255-square-feet condo, Penthouse 402, currently listed at $10.12 million. If sold, it would be the most expensive condo ever sold in San Diego. The current record holder is a $7.25 million condo in downtown San Diego at the Harbor Club Condos, which sold in 2007. Even adjusting for inflation, it would cost $8.5 million in current dollars, still falling short of the extravagant Muse unit.

A University City man accused of illegally selling firearms and heroin will next appear in federal court on June 8.

Paul Joseph Holdy, 39, has pleaded not guilty to three charges, but could face more counts after acting U.S. Attorney Alana Robinson said 19 firearms, including short barrel machine guns, were sold to undercover agents.

Holdy has agreed to not contest a no-bail status in the Metropolitan Correctional Center, but his attorney will be allowed to make an argument for bail later, according to court records.

Not his first run-in with the law, Holdy, convicted of selling an illegal drug in 2009, is charged with being an unlicensed dealer of firearms as a felon and cannot legally possess or sell weapons.

He is accused of possessing a firearm that has traveled across interstate commerce on Feb. 23. He is also charged with selling one ounce of black tar heroin for $1,000 on June 23, 2016 to an undercover agent or informant in a fast-food parking lot.

Holdy allegedly sold a silencer to the same person who bought the heroin, according to court records.

Celebrate founder Ellen Browning Scripps in Molly McClain’s new book

BY LUCIA VITI Molly McClain’s biography of Ellen Browning Scripps (18361932) is more than an interesting informative, fascinating and inspiring legacy about one of San Diego’s most beloved philanthropists. Her skillful, and at times loving tribute, is a revelation of how one woman, from rags to riches, changed America’s landscape.

The former La Jolla resident, American newspaperwoman, feminist, suffragist, abolitionist, and social reformer used her millions to facilitate women’s education and the labor movement while granting public access to science and the arts.

In addition, she, along with her brother, E.W. Scripps, established a newspaper conglomerate by linking Midwestern cities with West Coast cities, making themselves and other owners, millionaires virtually overnight.

“Born in London, Scripps grew up in rural poverty on the Illinois prairie,” writes McCain. “She went from rags to riches, living out that cherished American story in which people pull themselves up by their bootstraps with audacity, hard work and a little luck.”

overwhelming obstacles Browning Scripps overcame inclusive of “rigid class barriers, racism, sexism, and hostility to ethnic groups.” Browning Scripps lived in a time and place that dictated how “farmers and factory workers invested in the dream of upward mobility, believing that they could improve themselves by their own efforts.”

Historically, Scripps has used the pier to pump seawater to their facilities, pumping more than 1.8 million gallons of seawater a day. Scripps Pier is now also utilized by scientists, students, and aquarium staff to work on various research projects, by allowing them to gather local marine life and send out small boats and oceanographic instruments.

It is also home to a diving facility that functions as equipment storage and an inspection and maintenance center for the Scripps training program for scientists using underwater breathing apparati.

PB man gets three years in state prison for pointing a gun at a La Jolla woman

BY NEAL PUTNAM A Pacific Beach man who pointed a gun at his ex-girlfriend in her La Jolla home was sentenced Tuesday to three years in state prison.

Michael Anthony Davee, 52, pleaded guilty in April to assault with a deadly weapon in the Sept.

22, 2016 incident.

Davee climbed up a tree to the woman’s second-floor unit and went over the railing to approach the woman who lived on La Jolla Boulevard.

The woman was frightened and testified Davee also pointed the weapon at himself while he was talking to her. She ran out with her dog and phone, called 911, and escaped. She was shaken, but not hurt.

San Diego Superior Court Judge Michael Groch gave him credit for spending the last eight months in jail. No restitution was ordered.

Deputy District Attorney Samira Seidu asked for six years while his attorney requested probation. A protective order is in effect that forbids him from contacting the woman while he is in prison.

The maximum sentence was nine years in prison. Groch had indicated he was thinking of a sentence ranging from probation to three years in prison.

The woman testified at a Nov. 30 preliminary hearing that after Davee got onto her deck of her unit, he first asked why she wouldn’t go out to lunch with him.

The woman testified he pointed the gun at her from 2-3 feet away.

She quoted him as saying “he was going to hurt me or himself.”

When police arrived, Davee was gone, so they went to his home in the 1700 block of Law Street in Pacific Beach. Davee was there, but he escaped after a police dog mistakenly bit a gardener working outside and medical treatment was summoned for him.

Officers checked Davee’s boat, but he wasn’t there either. They later found him at the Dana Hotel on Mission Bay Drive and he was arrested at 7:49 p.m. He was also intoxicated at the time.

of much of her generosity. Browning Scripps established the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, founded the Scripps College in Claremont and supported The Bishop’s School, the La Jolla Recreational Center, Scripps Memorial Hospital, the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Natural History Museum and Torrey Pines State Park.

According to McClain, she also donated millions of dollars to worldwide organizations dedicated to educating women.

And no one was more surprised by her amassed fortune than Browning Scripps herself.

“Despite the myths that sustained ambition, no one really expected a poor farm girl to accumulate so much wealth, least of all Ellen herself,” writes McClain.

“Ellen knew more about knitting stockings and milking cows than reading a balance sheet.”

Browning Scripps’ unconventional path began with her attendance at Knox College, one of the few institutions that allowed women entrance, despite not offering them a degree. She graduated in 1859 with a certificate from the Female Collegiate Department.

When the La Jolla Village News went to meet up with the crew, comprised of men and women between the ages of 18 and 25, they were based out of Pomona and camping out on the beach below Broken Hill Trail. While having the privilege to camp in the Torrey Pines Reserve creates envy in most San Diegans, their strenuous labor is not for the faint of heart.

“Basically, the erosion was so bad on the trail, that it was deemed unsafe for public use,” said Dana Howard, communications director of CCC. “You’ll see the edges of the

Browning Scripps joined her brother James E. Scripps in Detroit in 1865 to work on the Detroit Evening News, noted to initiate the family’s mega-millions. After a 12hour day at the newspaper, she cared for her brother’s home and children, trading childcare for rent in order to invest her income. The home lacked indoor plumbing, electricity and only “one servant to do the scrubbing and cleaning,” “After the evening meal, she and James sat down with the cash box to count the nickels and pennies; they also prepared newspaper copy for the next day,” writes McClain.

“At seven o’clock the next morning, they were back in the office again.

There was no reprieve. Her younger brothers could escape from work, but Ellen shouldered both a woman’s duties and those of a man.”

No story would be complete, however, without family clashes over “power, personality and property.”

At 60 years of age, Browning

Scripps garnered roots in La Jolla, which was then considered a “rustic arts colony overlooking the ocean” and previously dubbed San Diego’s favorite summer camp grounds.

“She built a modest bungalow, befriended her neighbors and began experimenting with utopian ideas about personal expression and progressive social change,” writes McClain.

True to form, she never flaunted her wealth. McClain notes that she “kept few servants, lived frugally, wore out old clothes, ate sparingly, and took public transportation around San Diego until she was 80 years old.”

And yet despite her generosity, she never just helped anyone “get rich.” She believed that people should be responsible for their own success instead of enjoying privileges stemming from the success of others.

“Having come from a modest background, she had no desire to further the growth of American aristocracy,” writes McClain. “She wanted instead to help ordinary people improve themselves through access to science, art, literature, and education.”

trails are eroding out, a lot of the stairs need to be replaced, and several parts of the trail need to be built back to an even gradient.”

The Broken Hill Trail is roughly one mile in length and is one of the few state agency-maintained trails in San Diego that extends to the beach. Since the trails are too narrow (and unstable) and the CCC wants to have as little of an impact on the environment as possible, the crews are not utilizing any heavy machinery. Just wheelbarrows, picks, shovels and their bare hands.

This type of work is typical, and fits with the CCC’s self-deprecating motto “Hard work, low pay, miserable conditions… and more!”

“Last month they installed redwood stairs on one segment of the trail, which takes hikers down to

scenic overlooks and ultimately the ocean,” said Howard. “This June, crews will be placing rock rip-rap along the trail that has been impacted by erosion from poor drainage. Several corps members will be hauling the rock in wheelbarrows, while others will use hand tools to shore up the cliffs with the rock, using dry stone masonry techniques.”

Although Howard says that they do not have an exact project completion date, the erosion mitigation should be completed within a yearand-a-half. Their modifications should provide them with several years’ leeway, though it cannot be certain exactly how long (or short) they will remain functional.

‘Escape to Margaritaville’ at the Lodge at Torrey Pines, LJ Playhouse

BY SAVANAH DUFFY On Saturday, June 10 from 10 a.m. to noon, La Jolla Playhouse is partnering with The Lodge at Torrey Pines to host a Cast Meet andGreet brunch in honor of Jimmy Buffett’s first official musical, “Escape to Margaritaville.”

The performance’s world premiere is currently taking place onstage at the La Jolla Playhouse, before it is scheduled to be performed on Broadway in 2018.

“Escape to Margaritaville” will run through July 9, with eight performances each week, two on both Saturdays and Sundays, and none on Mondays.

Guests at the Cast Meet and Greet will be able to enjoy a Margaritaville-themed brunch cooked by The Lodge’s chef Jeff Jackson, meet some of the cast members of “Escape to Margaritaville” and be entertained as the cast performs musical numbers from the show on the Arroyo Terrace.

Cast members who will be present at the show include Paul Alexander Nolan, playing the part of Tully; Alison Luff, who plays Rachel; and Andre Ward, playing the role of Jamal.

The Lodge’s senior vice president of sales and marketing, Isla Butler, says she estimates about 120 guests will attend the brunch.

Tickets cost $95 and are all inclusive of Jackson’s Margaritaville-themed brunch, alcoholic beverages, taxes and service charge, as said by Stephanie Chavez, public relations and community outreach manager of Evans Hotels.

The brunch’s design will be centered on a tropical island theme to promote the blissful, relaxing atmosphere that is so prevalent in Margaritaville.

Although the menu is still being finalized, Chavez says guests can expect dishes of coconut milk and lime ceviche served with taro chips, Tropical Shrimp Kebabs, Cheeseburger in Paradise and Chicken Fafa—chicken thighs with coconut milk, spinach, ginger and garlic. Rest assured there will also be plenty of margaritas.

Tickets are being sold quickly, so Butler suggests guests buy their tickets sooner rather than later.

“It’s a great opportunity to really preview the show and give people a taste of what they can see,” says Butler.

According to Butler, the whole concept started with The Lodge wanting to celebrate their 15th anniversary by giving guests special experiences throughout the year, such as the brunch.

Jackson wanted to partner with one of the arts in La Jolla, says Butler says, and La Jolla Playhouse was a natural decision given how often the Playhouse and The Lodge have worked together in the past.

Similarly, the theater district will also be decorated to create a Margaritaville vibe, according to La Jolla Playhouse managing director Michael Rosenberg.

On Friday nights before the show, La Jolla Playhouse will provide a food truck in addition to their restaurant and, of course, more margaritas for sale.

ferent occasions from Feb. 23 to April 6, and some of them occurred at his home on Angell Place, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.

The weapons as AR-15 type short barrel rifles or machine guns, and seven Glock-style pistols. No manufacturers markings or serial numbers were found on 18 of the weapons.

Holdy told the undercover agent that it takes him longer to manufacture machine guns because necessary parts are not easily available. He described one machine gun as “fun to shoot and works really well,” according to court records.

“Illegally manufacturing and brokering the sale of guns and drugs on the streets of San Diego poses a tremendous danger to our community,” said Robinson.

“Prosecuting firearm offenses is a top priority for the U.S. Attorney’s office and we will continue our efforts to disrupt the availability of illegal guns in our city,” said Robinson.

Holdy faces up to 30 years in federal prison if he’s convicted.

Holdy’s May 10 arrest was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives with assistance from the FBI.

La Jolla High softball team figures it out, quickly breaks losing streak

BY ED PIPER, JR. La Jolla’s softball team took a while to figure out Mission Bay pitcher Cassidy West. The 5foot-10-inch tall freshman, who is a talented club team player, struck out La Jolla hitters in the second and third innings of the CIF Division 4 championship game May 27. She had a streak of seven straight outs via strikeout early in the contest.

But the Vikings finally broke into the scoring column with a run in the fourth, and after the Buccaneers scored the equalizer in the fifth, La Jolla’s Josie Sinkeldam drilled a 1-0 fastball into centerfield with one out in the bottom of the seventh to score Sina Anae from second base for the walk-off game-winning hit for the title.

In the same way, coach Andrea Denham’s squad took a while at the beginning of the season to settle in and figure things out.

Sinkeldam, earlier in the week during the playoffs, was asked why her team was playing so well. The junior shortstop responded, “We’re having fun. We’re all here, and we’re feeding off each other.”

The Cal State Dominguez Hills commit was referring to the fact that starting the season, key players were missing and the Vikings struggled to an 0-6 record. Kyra Ferenczy, the sophomore pitcher, and Vanessa Shaffer, a spectacular fielding centerfielder, were delayed in coming to the team because of the school soccer team’s run to the CIF Division II title.

Even when they were back on the softball field, the team could hardly win a game. Ferenczy, rusty in the pitcher’s circle and nor-

mally an outfielder in club ball, hadn’t pitched a ball in seven months. Her swing at the plate, which led to a .451 average as a freshman, also showed signs of neglect and was slowstarting.

How did the red-and-black eventually put together their hot streak at the end of the season through the playoffs to the title, which they were denied last year by a 5-0 loss in the final to Christian?

Assistant coach Tracy Brown’s explanation: “I’ve been working them hard. I leave practice hurting. The girls leave pretty well-done.”

Then, different players alternated sparking the batting lineup, and Ferenczy got her effective changeup back. In a narrow, hard-fought first-round 3-2 win at Mission Vista, which required a long drive through traffic, Ferenczy, hitting in the third slot, led the attack with a pair of RBI doubles in a come-from-behind thriller. This came after the team won a do-ordie play-in game against Tri-City Christian two days before.

Then, in the second round, Sinkeldam, in the leadoff spot, had four RBI’s as the Vikings won again on the road at Mar Vista, the number-two seed, 7-2. La Jolla was the sixth seed in the bracket.

That win gave them last Tuesday off, enabling them to rest and prepare whoever met them in the semifinals May 25. Coronado, the top seed, couldn’t answer the call as La Jolla’s offense unleashed a 19-hit attack, led by Linda Brown’s pair of two-run home runs, and exploded for a 12-3 win. Catcher Hailey Ramos had two RBI’s on a double that started the Vikings’ scoring.

their friendships on the team. Says left fielder Ava Verbrugghen, “I came out because of the camaraderie. How do you pronounce that word?”

She talked Anae, who had never played softball before, into coming out this year and playing right field. Shaffer, initially, didn’t plan to return to the team this year as a junior after making several leaping catches the past two years at her spot in left field. But a little persuasion, apparently by her soccer teammate Ferenczy, did the trick.

And Sara Tyrus, a consistent second baseman who planned to take her senior season

off to concentrate on golf, had her mind changed as well. Otherwise, Denham’s roster wouldn’t have had enough players.

We need to know the past, for it predicts the future Doing it Better

By Natasha Josefowitz, Ph.D. Reading the paper and watching the news on television increases my stress hormones on a daily basis. Like many of us today, I am depressed.

There are so many distressing things happening: the growing homeless population, the unsafe streets, the increased drug use, the humanitarian crises around the globe, the plight of illegal immigrants, the healthcare dilemma, our failing educational system, pollution, the current state of world, etc.

I’m also nostalgic remembering a time when people really believed that “It’s not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” I’m of the generation who went off as Peace Corps volunteers to the far corners of the earth; who went door

-to-door to tell people to vote (which I actually did for Adlai Stevenson); who believed in community, in mutual help, in improving the world. I never had a key to my home because the door was always open, and no one had keys to their cars either—mind you, that was not in a small town in the Midwest, that was in Beverly Hills in the 1940s and ’50s.

I used to go to New York City to visit an aunt and would walk in Central Park in the evening hand-in-hand with my latest boyfriend. It never occurred to anyone to be afraid. Later, as a social-work intern from Columbia University, I could go alone without fear to Harlem to do home visits. The cities were safe; the streets were safe; our homes were safe. There were no beggars in the streets (that was in Calcutta); no hungry children (that was in Africa); no homeless people (that was somewhere else).

What is getting me depressed today is the cynicism which permeates our world every day. “Attempts” to address our society’s problems seem only to be for show; they are just “photo opportunities” for politicians and

celebrities. It is the trend in our country today to place image before truth; whatever is said or done is merely for the purpose of re-election or improving popularity ratings. Out-and-out lying is now prevalent. We have invented new expressions to express our culture of falsehoods: “alternative facts” and “fake news.”

What can I do about this strange feeling of sadness that fills my days? It helps if I think in terms of centuries—dictators have come and gone; we have had mad kings and evil queens; we’ve fought wars. Famine, drought, floods, earthquakes, and tsunamis have always been a part of our history. But all of the above, including climate changes, will affect my children and grandchildren. However, if we think in terms of millennia, the planet won’t care; it has gone through tectonic plates crashing into each other, asteroids hitting it, global warmings and ice ages. Our planet will survive.

Species have come and gone; we lose some every day. The polar bears may go extinct. Are we next?

Thinking in terms of centuries and millen-

nia helps to give me a perspective for the long term, but what would make me less depressed is the possibility of a different political and economic agenda. One where we all become responsible adults caring for each other, for those near us as well as those living on other continents.

I really want to adopt the hundreds of children starving today, to feed them and love them, and send them to school. I also want to find jobs for the jobless and teach them the skills they need to earn a decent living. I want to counsel all new parents to read to their children, all newlyweds on how to deal with conflict, and all of those who just experienced a loss how to be resilient and heal.

I guess I just want to fix the world into my own image of what it should look like, be like.

The problem is that not everyone shares my vision. So, in the meantime, all I can do is continue writing these columns.

University City Updates: Standley Park Improvements, golf victories, and more

Franz observed the regular support of physical education by EdUCate! The Honor and Awards Committee selected EdUCate! as a “2017 Community Partner of the Year.”

The award presentation took place at the San Diego Region CAHPERD end of the year celebration and awards on May 18 at the Barefoot Bar located in the Paradise Point Resort. UCHS boys golf team becomes back-toback champs The boys of spring have done it again. The UCHS boys varsity golf team are back-to-back Central League champions for the first time in school history. The team has not lost a league match in two years with a league record of 18-0 the past two seasons. San Diego theater review: On the lively arts and ‘Mainly Mozart’

BY CHARLENE BALDRIDGE Classical Music The 29th annual Mainly Mozart Festival opens its Spotlight Series concerts, with this year’s theme being “Finding His Voice: Beauty Through Adversity.” The series is scheduled at 6 p.m. on June 2, at the Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club and 6:30 p.m. on June 3, at the Scripps Research Institute (TSRI Auditorium).

Concerts feature works by Mozart and Mendelssohn on June 2 and Mozart and Beethoven June 3. As the centerpiece of both concerts, mezzo-soprano Deborah Nansteel, violinist Tereza Stranislav and cellist Andrew Shulman perform Jake Heggie’s “The Work at Hand,” with text by a San Diego-raised poet, the late Laura (nee Costales) Morefield, who happens to be the daughter of this columnist.

The 2015 work, which perfectly fits Mainly Mozart’s theme this year, was commissioned by Carnegie Hall and Pittsburgh Symphony, where it was conducted by Mainly Mozart music director Michael Francis. Francis conducts the Mainly Mozart All-Star Festival Orchestra in concerts from June 10 to 24 at the Balboa Theatre at 444 4th Ave., Gaslamp District.

Fashion files: Fashion Week San Diego presents Spring Showcase Fashion Files

Fashion Week San Diego presented their Spring Showcase at the Hotel Del Coronado on May 13. This showcase began a year-long series of fashion events to celebrate their 10th anniversary. Over the years, they have had more than 100 designer brands walk down the runway. This event was a chance for everyone to get a sneak peek at this year’s designers.

The Spring Showcase was held on the Windsor Lawn of this Historic Coastal Hotel.

The evening featured fashion, music and art.

Guests could enjoy the beautiful scenery along the waterfront while shopping at the booths that each designer set up. There were samples of several designers, giveaways, and a silent auction.

FWSD founder and director Allison Andrews welcomed the group. The hosts for the evening were NBC 7 San Diego Jodi Kodesh and TV personality Jeff Krapf. A pre-

sentation was also made to the 2017 FAB Authority Winners, for that covered the Spring Showcase event fees.

The winners of the FAB Authority were Oseas Villatoro and Chloe Bisou of The Stylish Bisou. Villatoro has coordinated ready to wear for men and women, and The Stylish Bisou has a collection of dog apparel and coordinating women’s wear as well.

The runway show provided a sneak peek of what each designer will show in October.

The theme this year is “Past, Present and Future,” in which they are bringing back some of the favorites from the past.

A’doreus was back for the fifth year, and the designer, Sharlene Borromeo, was the 2014 Top Designer for her full-figured woman. This year she is showcasing the full-figured woman alongside a standard-figured woman to demonstrate how the same design looks awesome on both forms.

B.JASH.I was back for the fourth consecutive year, showcasing her creative designs.

Marcie Bain was the FWSD15 Top Designer.

The winning designer of FWSD13 was Richard Henderson who was back with his elegant resort wear collection, RHCREATION. Territa Torres was also back after winning the FWSD16 Top Designer with her stylish

creations, and the duo team of Aida Soria and Syncletica Maestas were back with their HOLA Swimwear designs.

This year’s Fashion Week San Diego will have events going on for the entire year leading up to Fall Runway Show. The lineup will begin with a VIP reception and fashion film screening of “The Red Pearl” at the LOT on Oct. 4.

The Art and Beauty Behind Fashion night will be held on Oct.5 at the Andaz Hotel.

Designer Runway Shows will be on Oct. 6 and 7 at the Broadway Pier in downtown San Diego. The annual Trunk Show from all the designers and awards will be at the Hotel Del Coronado.

Community Conservatory of Paris satellite to open at French-American School The French Conservatory of Music, located in Beverly Hills, is opening a satellite music program at the San Diego French-American School (SDFAS) in September 2017.

Initially, lessons in piano (classical and jazz), guitar (classical), and violin, will be offered to children ages four and up and to adults in oneon-one sessions on Wednesdays from 3 to 8 p.m.

Lessons will be offered in individual sessions of 30, 45 or 60 minutes throughout the school year.

The first 12-week session will begin in September, shortly after school starts. A high-quality piano will be on-site for instruction and students will need to bring their own guitar or violin. Lessons on other instruments and vocal instruction may be added later, according to Christian Jarlov, headmaster.

Although the course of instruction will mirror the rigorous, professional music training of the Music Conservatory of Paris, the lessons will be in English and led by professional certified French and American teachers. Final exams will be held in June, and diplomas will be issued by the French Conservatory of Music in Paris.

La Jolla Institute researcher receives $100,000 grant The Arthritis National Research Foundation (ANRF) has awarded La Jolla Institute researcher Michela Locci, Ph.D., a $100,000 research grant to study the underlying causes of rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the lining of joints leading to stiffness, deformations and often crippling pain. The disease

affects around 1.5 million adults in the United States and many of them fail to respond to currently available therapies.

Locci, an instructor in the laboratory of LJI professor Shane Crotty, Ph.D., will use the ANRF funds to study a previously unexplored link between a highly specialized pool of immune cells and the presence of autoantibodies, which contribute to severe forms of the disease.

City renews contract with Toyota for lifeguard vehicles The City of San Diego has signed a new agreement that will have San Diego County

Toyota Dealers provide up to 35 vehicles for use by San Diego Lifeguards. The agreement includes service and maintenance of the vehicles for a total savings of $1.2 million to San Diego taxpayers.

Again this year, Toyota joined San Diego Lifeguards in promoting Water Safety Days at the start of the Memorial Day weekend and just in time to welcome a new fleet of 2017 vehicles that are hitting the beaches of San Diego.

The lifeguard vehicles provided by Toyota are a key tool in public safety efforts along the City’s beaches and cliffs. The San Diego coast is a popular destination for visitors and residents alike, keeping lifeguards busy with over 9,475 water rescues performed last year.

To kick off the summer season, San Diego public safety personnel will be on hand to promote water safety at this event, as well as highlight job opportunities as a San Diego Lifeguard.
