Mt. Soledad cross freshened up as Memorial Day nears
Sea lions, seals not for selfies
La Jolla's Mount Soledad cross is getting spruced up in time for Memorial Day with the help of several local volunteers and companies that have donated their services. The 29-foot cross is in need of a good scrubbing and some fresh paint after years of wear and weathering, said Bob Mulrooney, executive director of Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial Association. Visitors and pinnipeds don't mix – and somebody better tell the humans By DAVE SCHWAB
The problem is clear: People aren't supposed to be near, let along interacting with, pinnipeds in and around La Jolla Cove or Children's Pool. But not everyone's aware of that. Particularly not tourists and visitors. The mix is presenting a growing problem with crowd control in separating humans from marine mammals, which has been a con-

Merchants receive updates on assessment district program By DAVE SCHWAB
In April, La Jolla Village Merchants Association got updates on the proposed creation of a maintenance assessment district, La Jolla Day at Petco Park and the End of Summer Run in August, benefiting San Diego firefighters. Mark Dibella, spokesperson for Enhance La Jolla, a nonprofit promoting creation of a maintenance assessment district to fund Village beautification, told the merchant board that the
proposed district will charge a flat fee of $86.87 a year for residential owners, while commercial property owners will be assessed based on the square footage of their lots. Assessments would be collected on property tax bills in January, to be held by the city in an account designated solely for maintenance assessment. Dibella said property owners within the proposed district will be asked to vote on the district's formation. SEE MERCHANTS, Page 14
