La Jolla High school faces school safety issues with pointed plan of action

In the aftermath of the Parkland, Fla. mass school shooting, La Jolla High parents are questioning how safe their school really is.

More importantly, they’re asking themselves, what can be done to make it even safer?

La Jolla High PTSA president Fran Shimp, who has three children at LJHS, said much more needs to be done across-the-board to address the shooting threat.

“I would like to take an all-encompassing, proactive approach that targets students' mental health and anger-management issues by having threat assessment teams and restorative justice teams on campus, as well as enacting effective guncontrol legislation, and installing safety upgrades on campus,” Shimp said.

LJHS parent Ed Chopskie, who has one child at LJHS, one who’s graduated, and another at Muirlands Middle School, supports the Second Amendment and gun ownership.

He just doesn’t support how it’s being implemented.

“Why is it easier to get a weapon than it is to get a driver’s license?” asked Chopskie. “For our children to get a driver’s license, it takes a full probationary period behind the wheel training, and you have to take

an exam. But anybody can walk into a Walmart and buy an AR 15 [assault rifle]. You have to be 21 to buy cigarettes and alcohol, but anybody can buy a gun.”

A person must be at least 18 years of age to purchase a rifle or shotgun in California. To purchase a handgun, a person must be at least 21 years of age. State law also imposes

a 10-day waiting period before a firearm can be released to a purchaser or transferee.

Chopskie noted the school’s district police officer, who shuttles between the various schools in the La Jolla cluster, is armed.

“But I don’t believe he wears body armor,” Chopskie said, adding, “He’s usually involved dealing with nui-

sances. He’s not expecting somebody to show up with a semi-automatic weapon with 30-round clips.

Maybe we need to hire another officer — or fund fencing the campus in.”

Chopskie is also not in favor of arming teachers. “They’re there to educate children, not for security,” he said.

In a letter to LJHS families, Shimp noted she’s been contacted by several concerned parents asking about their children's safety on La Jolla High's campus.

“It has become clear that more information needs to be shared with our community, and the abundance of misinformation needs to be addressed,” Shimp said.

Since the Parkland shooting, school districts across the country, including San Diego Unified, as well as local law enforcement agencies, have been reassessing school safety plans and procedures in case of an active shooter on campus.

Recently, noted Shimp, LJHS’s school site council and site governance team held a joint meeting with the school police officer who shared the high school’s safety plan and answered questions.

These suggestions for making LJHS a harder target to an armed assailant have emerged: • Fixing broken blinds in classrooms and/or installing blackout shades.

• Fixing hard-to-lock doors in classrooms or installing door stoppers that will prevent someone from entering.

Short term vacation rentals cause a stir at Coalition of Town Councils

Like the tide rolling in, the movement to curb proliferating shortterm vacation rentals is sweeping through coastal neighborhoods, gaining in strength and intensity as it goes.

That was clearly evidenced at a March 8 meeting of the newly formed San Diego Coalition of Town Councils’ STVR Working Group hosted by La Jolla Town Council.

Representatives from town councils in La Jolla, Mission Beach, Ocean Beach Pacific Beach and Clairemont, as well as the San Diego Unified School District and City Council Districts 1 and 2, met to plot strategy. The new group vetted recommendations proposed for tightening rules and enforcement governing the placement and operation of short-term vacation rentals in their communities.

The working group meeting came at a pivotal time, as both SDUSD, the City Council and the mayor, have all taken, or are about to take, further action on the vacation-rental issue.

Citing impacts of short-term rentals on housing supply allegedly threatening the ability of communities to support their local schools, SDUSD’s board recently unani-

mously passed a resolution urging the city to approve “appropriate regulation” of vacation rentals. The district added that resolving the issue "is critical for the future of the communities in our city."

New proposals on reigning-in vacation rentals are also expected soon from Mayor Kevin Faulconer and the City Council.

In December 2017, following fiveplus hours of public testimony on vacation rentals, an impasse among the City Council’s nine members, who split between two competing proposals, failed to approve new regulations for the burgeoning industry.

“We do not hate short-term rentals, nor are we trying to get rid of them in communities,” said Ann Kerr Bache, LJTC president at the meeting. “We’re not against home sharing, but when it impacts the quality of life in neighborhoods … short-term rental owners need to be held accountable.”

Kerr Bache gave a slideshow presentation detailing a number of recommendations for short-term rentals including: establishing a permitting process, limiting the number of rentals in communities and their proximity to one another, establishing a violation “process” with specific escalating penalties;

The working group additionally is proposing that a fund be established, into which all enforcement fees and fines would be deposited, to administer and enforce new stricter vacation-rental regulations.

Panelist Chris Brewster, a retired lifeguard, said the issue needs to be viewed through “the big picture” while urging compromise. “In a democracy, you need to end up with something that is in the middle,” he said.

Suspect remanded to jail for hit-and-run death from UC San Diego student

A driver charged with the hit-andrun death of a University of California San Diego student was jailed Wednesday after he failed to get a device that would measure any drinking of alcohol as a bail condition.

Corundolus Toussaint, 38, of Per-

ris, had been free on $50,000 bond in the Feb. 24 death of Andres Perkins, 21, who was killed at 2:45 a.m. on Interstate 5 near an Old Town Avenue exit.

San Diego Superior Court Judge Maureen Hallahan remanded him into jail when she raised his bail to $140,000 after Toussaint did not get the Scram device as ordered by

another judge at his March 8 arraignment.

The previous judge specified that he get the device along with a GPS tracking device by Friday, March 9.

A bail review was scheduled for March 21 after he didn’t get the device.

Deputy District Attorney Karra Reedy cited public safety as a reason

to include the devices as a bond condition.

Reedy said the 2004 Honda was found abandoned at a Shell gas station on Pacific Highway with blood on the broken windshield. The car’s license plate fell off on the freeway near Perkins’ body, she said.

The vehicle was registered to Toussaint’s girlfriend, who lives out of

town, said Reedy. She noted that Toussaint also lives out of town and has a previous drug conviction from 2014.

Toussaint works in San Diego. He has pleaded not guilty. A preliminary hearing was set for May 3. He remains in the central jail following the 10:40 a.m. booking March 21.

La Jolla MAD in court once again: March 29 showdown to determine district legality

On March 29, San Diego Judge Randa Trapp will once again hear arguments from both sides. At issue is whether or not assessed property under the La Jolla Maintenance Assessment District [MAD] would receive any special benefit “over and above that” received by the general public.

In her Nov. 30 ruling, Trapp stated, “The general public should not be required to pay for special benefits for the few, and the few specially benefited should not be subsidized by the general public.”

Noting the City felt it didn’t get a fair shake the first time around, Mike Aguirre, of the law firm Aguirre & Severson LLP representing La Jolla landlords challenging the MAD, said, “All the City said was they wanted to hear the case over, asking for more time to argue the case

in front of the original judge.”

A group known as La Jolla Benefits Association (LJBA), filed a lawsuit against the La Jolla MAD on Dec. 28, 2016 in San Diego Superior Court. The Association's suit challenged the MAD, which passed by a 56 percent to 44 percent margin by mail ballot within La Jolla's downtown Village in November 2016.

Nonprofit Enhance La Jolla was formed to lobby for the proposed MAD, and was sanctioned by La Jolla voters to administer the new MAD should it become operative.

“Neither the MAD, nor Enhance La Jolla, is a party to the suit,” said pro-MAD spokesman Bill Tribolet.

“Certainly, our hope is that the City prevails in court, offering us the opportunity to make significant capital improvements in the Village.”

Following are excerpts from filed city documents laying out its case

for the MAD rehearing.

“Petitioner LJBA seeks to set aside formation of the MAD claiming: irregularities in voting establishing the district; city failure to identify the special benefits to property owners; and failure of the supporting engineer’s report detailing ‘special’ versus ‘general benefits’ to be provided by the new district.”

The City is challenging the legal standing of LJBA in court documents stating, “ … there is no evidence that the lawsuit is timely or that it has standing to sue the city.

The LJBA is a limited liability corporation formed ‘after’ the district was established that ‘does not’ own property within the district and ‘does not’ have the obligation to pay the district assessment. The law is clear that to challenge a revenue measure, a petitioner must have actually paid, or be liable to pay the assessment at issue… The LJBA fails to

meet either of these requirements.”

Attorney Maria Severson representing LJBA said landlords are arguing the proposed MAD “does not provide special benefits, but rather, only dresses up the City Charter’s mandated duty to provide special benefits. … The [MAD] district is really just a second tax on services the City is supposed to already be providing.”

Severson said plaintiffs are “looking forward to the hearing so that we can highlight why the judge’s [original] decision is correct.”

Aguirre pointed out La Jolla property owners who paid their initial tax assessment for the new MAD at the start of the year, have since had their money refunded. He added March 29 may not be the final legal action, as the case could be petitioned to be heard by an appellate court.

The safety and security of students and staff is a top priority of SDUSD. Each school in the district has its own set of safety and security plans based on the age and footprint of the campus.

As a result of more than $40 million in school safety upgrades since the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in 2012, all of our schools now have comprehensive school safety plans.

The district does not publicly disclose any potential safety vulnerabilities as a matter of student security. However, schools throughout the district will receive a variety of safety upgrades paid for with the proceeds of voter-approved bond measures.

Some $15 million in safety upgrades were fast-tracked by the school board on March 13. Those projects include: perimeter fences, gates, door locks, security cameras, PA systems, site radios, police dispatch and communication systems, visitor access and school office reconfiguration.

La Jolla High’s campus will begin its Whole Site Modernization Plan at the end of this calendar year, but it is not expected to be completed until 2021-22. Shimp noted the school has also received bids to install temporary PA systems until the permanent ones are in place. “We prioritize different aspects of our lives and have different expectations for our children,� concluded Shimp. “But we want our kids to be safe. We want to know that when they leave the house in the morning, they will be returning that night. Anything else would be unimaginable. While I will never be able to say La Jolla High, or any high school for that matter, is 100 percent safe, I can say we are working together as a community to make it the best it can be.�

Scripps family contributes $4.6M to two crucial Scripps oceanography projects The University of California San Diego recently announced charitable gifts from more than a dozen descendants of Edward W. Scripps that will make possible two crucial and high-profile projects at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The gifts underscore the family’s commitment to advance the mission of Scripps Oceanography to find solutions to our greatest environmental challenges.

Included in the projects covered by the $4.6 million in family gifts is the replacement of the railing on the Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier, and the reconstruction and modernization of the Center for Coastal Studies, which will be named after longtime supporters Charles and Lois (Beano) Scripps.

“The scientific research completed at the Charles and Beano Scripps Center for Coastal Studies, and on the Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier, is vital to further our understanding of coastal processes,” said Margaret Leinen, vice chancellor of marine sciences at UC San Diego and director of Scripps Oceanography.

All the family members are descendants of Robert Paine Scripps, a son of Edward W. Scripps and a nephew of Ellen Browning Scripps.

A fixture on the San Diego coastline for more than a century, the Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier is the locale of one of the world’s longest continuous records of seawater temperature and salinity. Instrumentation on the pier also

measures atmospheric carbon dioxide, meteorological conditions and surface currents from above, and ocean pH and plankton in the waters below. The pier contains a launch for small, nearshore research vessels and provides a supply of filtered seawater to laboratories on campus and to Birch Aquarium at Scripps. The pier will be fully operational during construction and scientific research in progress on the pier will remain unimpeded.

Rigs-to-Reefs program continues to address decommissioned oil rigs head on

Last January, the La Jolla Village News featured a story about two Scripps alumnae, Amber Jackson and Emily Callahan, who champion the concept of converting decommissioned oil rigs into sustainable reefs. Now, their research into the Rigs-to-Reef program, a part of Blue Latitudes, is gearing up for the premiere of a film documenting a recent trip to Malaysia, “Transecting Borneo,” on Saturday, April 14 at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography's, Sumner Auditorium from 5 to 7 p.m.

“Transecting Borneo” delves into what could be considered a perfect example of the Rigs-toReef ethos. In the film, the two marine biologists travel to Malaysia to dive from a converted rig that is now functioning as an eco resort for divers, Seaventures Dive Rig. In addition to serving as both a residence and diving locale for guests, the resort is focused on limiting its environmental footprint by operating under a 'minimum discharge' poli-

cy, regularly hosting cleanup dives and ensuring that all hand soap and chemicals used on the rig are environmentally safe.

While the Rigs-to-Reef concept has seen great success in the Gulf of Mexico, with more than 500 rigs now serving as artificial reefs, the concept is not widely accepted by Californians. To combat this and gain traction in California, both Jackson and Callahan, along with Claire Gonzales working on the “back end,” piling through data collected by marine biologists, taking divers out to the platforms and sharing their research at various speaking events.

The state passed legislation specific to this notion in 2010, AB2503, which governs marine resources and preservation.

“While it is an important piece of legislation, we feel that it doesn’t do enough to resolve the issues surrounding the future of aging platforms off the California coastline,” said Callahan. “The biggest issue presented is the liability of the structure. In the Gulf of Mexico, when a

Penn’s first novel, ‘Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff’ a feverish, chaotic dystopia

It could be argued that works of dystopia serve as a bellwether during trying times of technological growth. While certain facets of the story, typically pertaining to the future, can often seem far-fetched, at the underlying core of any successful work, maintains a direct sense of urgency and a dissolution of thought and or/freedom in some way.

Sean Penn has amassed an impressive body of work as an actor, winning Academy Awards for Best Actor in both “Milk (2009)” and “Mystic River (2004).” He is also a talented director, dedicated activist and humanitarian, journalist and, recently, author. Penn has penned his first novel, “Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff,” from which he will be reading from at DG Wills Books on Saturday, April 7 at 2 p.m.

“Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff ” is at once an homage to characters typical of Pynchon and Vonnegut, with sensibilities, pertinent skills and temperament (for good or ill), to match, as well as a joltingly original work for these terse political times.

The book permeates through the hyper-detailed, yet condensed fog of the titular character, Bob Honey’s, life experiences. Bob always, whether knowingly or unwittingly, seems to be where the action is. Is Bob simply an entrepreneur in the most capitalistic sense of the term, a contract killer, or just... different?

Bob lives on 1528 Sweet Dog Lane in Woodview, Calif., though his neighbors rarely see him around.

When they do, it typically involves catching a glimpse of a maladjusted middle-aged man. One neighbor in particular, a bouffainted busybody by the name of Helen Mayo, frequently calls in Bob’s anti-climactic antics into the sheriff ’s office.

Since (and even prior) to his divorce, Bob has maintained little faith or trust in other human beings.

A bit of a firebug in his youth (like most American boys), it only seemed natural for Bob to enter into the realm of large-scale pyrotechnic displays later on in adulthood. And, it was during his Schwinn Stingrayriding, commie-hating childhood that he learned how to do just so.

Coming into his own as a man, during one of his major entrepreneurial shifts, Bob figured it out that the disposal of human effluents would always be a marketable job, especially to the Jehovah’s Wit-

nesses. Eventually this found him in Afghanistan in 2003, shortly after Saddam Hussein’s regime was overthrown. Here, he was lending his expertise, particularly in leeching fields.

“Yes, Bob is God’s squared-away individual,” Penn writes. “He knows how to get up in the morning... and just do stuff.”

Stuff, in all its nonspecifics, is Bob’s specialty. In particular, Bob seems to have some extra-insight as to the inner-workings of the CIA. In his travels, he has surely come across his fair share of spooks or “knife collectors,” due to their affinity for exotic knives. Suffice it to say, he has spent some time picking up their habits.

Once a nosy investigative reporter named Spurley Cultier begins digging into Bob’s misfit lifestyle for a “feature article,” Bob cannot tell whether he should form a connection with another human, or if his demise is at hand.

Pete Best to be at San Diego Beatles Fair at Queen Bee

Now in its 16th edition, San Diego Beatles Fair is a true grass roots event, put together by fans of the Fab Four, with no other desire than to have a good time. The two-day show features numerous bands performing Beatles and related music, a photo exhibit, dealer’s room and much more, with this year’s special guest set to be original Beatles drummer, Pete Best.

“The Beatles music appeals to just about everyone, from everywhere,” explained Beatles Fair organizer, Alma Rodriguez. “It’s universal, their songs transcend genres and age groups. You can see it in the performers taking part at the show this

year, from young kids to scene veterans, people from all over the city, almost everybody likes the Beatles.”

Besides Best, other performers set to take part include main stage artists The Rollers (the Ed Sullivan shows), The Baja Bugs (Rubber Soul era), Ringer Starr (solo era hits) and the Dave Humphries Band (Wings/Harrison songs). “We try hard to mix things up and include music from all phases of their careers,” Rodriguez says. “You won’t just hear “Day Tripper” or some of the big hits over and over.”

Meanwhile a second, outdoor patio stage will feature acoustic performers, including blues favorites John January & Linda Berry and The Fire Brothers, featuring guitarists Tim

and Manny Cien, as well as saxophonist Ed Croft, all three formerly part of ’80s favorites, NE1.

Best played with the band from 1960–1962, performing in Hamburg, recording with Tony Sheridan and at the BBC, taping early versions at EMI Studios of “Love Me Do” and others. He was most recently heard with the band on their No. 1, 1995 album, “Anthology.”

Speaking from his home in Liverpool, England, Best notes having performed in the area several times since the 1980s, with fond memories. “I played in San Diego many years ago and had a wonderful time,” he recalled. “On one occasion, apart from playing, I had a great day out on the bay, where myself and

(Paul McCartney & Wings guitarist) Denny Laine, raced around on wave runners all afternoon. It was great fun, and that is what San Diego means to me, great fun. That is what Beatles Fair is all about, so it makes sense to return.”

Why does he think the music he made all those decades ago still resonates with young music fans? “I feel that anything creative, if filled with passion, resonates,” he mused.

“We poured everything we had into our music from the very beginning, and the other lads without me, to the end. Having two great songwriters in the one band obviously helped,” Best said. “Great music, great anything will last because it shines brighter and better.”

Best will be backed for his Beatles Fair appearance by local musicians, including longtime Ocean Beach residents, Mike Dorsey and Chris Leyva of Falling Doves. “Getting to play with a legend like this is almost unbelievable,” Leyva said. “The Beatles have been such a huge influence on my musical life. The younger me would never have thought something like this would be possible.”

Best remains active in Liverpool, with the iconic Casbah Coffee Club and the new Magical History Museum amongst his projects. “The latter is a Fab Four Experience on Mathew Street in Liverpool,” he said. “And

owned platform in Santa Barbara filed for bankruptcy. Platform Holly, which had not produced oil since May 19, 2015, when an onshore, underground line owned

by Plains All American Pipeline spilled more than 120,000 gallons of crude oil into the ocean, is the first platform eligible for decommissioning in California in more than 20 years.

As a result of Venoco's chapter 11 bankruptcy, Venoco was forced to “quitclaim” their lease on Platform Holly and the surrounding Ellwood Oil Field, giving it back to the State

Lands Commission. California is now responsible for decommissioning Platform Holly, using Venoco’s Ellwood Oil Fields leasing bond, a total of $22 million, to ensure the thorough extraction of the entire platform structure.

“Platform Holly is now the liability of the state, which means costs associated with decommissioning will affect taxpayers,” said Jackson.

“California State Lands Commission is now tasked with planning what to do with decommissioned rigs within two-to-three years from now.”

According to Blue Latitudes' website, Rig2ReefExploration.org, the decommissioning process begins when “the oil well is capped, and the upper 85 feet of the platform is either towed, toppled in place or

removed.”

The site also adds that “Not all platforms are suitable as reefing candidates, and in order for any platform to be considered for reefing, it must first undergo extensive ecological evaluations...”

While it may seem that this would pit this kind of program against major oil companies, the group has received praise for their work. And although it may seem that the decimation of coral reefs and our oceans has been catastrophic, they remain optimistic.

“Oceans are incredibly resilient places,” said Gonzales. “Our work aims to find an area of compromise between industry, science and the public.”

Pursuing one’s passion: Amir K. to headline The Comedy Store La Jolla

Before he was a famous comedian and actor, starring on shows like MADtv, and appearing in feature films like “Argo” and “The Pyramid,” Amir Kamyab (Amir K.) worked in real estate appraisals. Before that, he studied law at UCLA. Several years prior to UCLA, he was a child witness to tragedy during the Iran-Iraq war.

“The old building that we lived in, our landlord’s building, a bomb actually got dropped on there and they lost a kid,” said Kamyab.

“That’s one of my earliest memories actually, seeing the women wailing over the loss of this child. I think that was the final thing that made my dad say, ‘Let’s get the hell out of here.’”

At the age of 5, Kamyab and his family moved from their home in Iran to Orange County. No one in the family really spoke English, so Kamyab had to learn by mimicking the other kids in his neighborhood.

“I think that’s probably why I do a lot of different characters in my acts,” said Kamyab, who often impersonates several ethnicities in his shows. “In seventh grade, I had this Spanish teacher who would let me teach the class sometimes. He would be grading papers and be like, ‘Amir go teach this lesson,’ because he knew I could do it in a funny way 1 IN ESCROW, ONLY 1 LEFT!

At the end of that year, Kamyab’s teacher put on a talent show for the school and let him and another class-clown friend host the spectacle. This was Kamyab’s first time performing comedy in front of an audience larger than his everyday classroom.

“In between the acts, we would come up and do little sketches and tell jokes,” said Kamyab. “I just loved watching everyone laugh at what we did. I think that was really when I caught the bug.”

Now, performing at The Comedy Store in La Jolla the weekend of March 23, the comedian’s audience reach has expanded drastically from the open-mic nights he would sneak into as an 18-year-old, brandishing his older brother’s ID. Although he has been a featured comedian at the venue, this will be Kamyab’s first time headlining at The Comedy Store.

“The best thing about stand-up comedy is there are never short cuts,” said Kamyab. “You have to put in the blood, sweat and tears.

You go to all these open mics for years where people don’t care for the comedy, or they don’t even know comedy is happening, and you just power through it.”

But there is a strong social aspect to comedy, in addition to the bond between aspiring comedians, which

Kamyab equates to a kind of “graduating class,” that draws on the connection between the performer and the audience members. It’s this connection, built on the foundation of funny, that first drew Kamyab to the life of comedy, contrasted to the life of exile in UCLA’s law library.

“I kept lying to myself and my dad like, ‘Oh, I’ll go to school and be a funny lawyer,’” said Kamyab. “But I remember studying at the library and looking around at everyone in there and thinking, ‘These people look miserable.’”

Still, Kamyab admits it was the slight fear of “failing at my dream” that led him to the real estate business following college. It wasn’t until the market crashed in 2007 that Kamyab made the decision to move back to LA and pursue what made him happy, making people laugh.

“I realized money wasn’t the thing I should be chasing,” said Kamyab, who always makes a point to visit with fans after a show. “I lived like a bum for a while, but now things are

Having been mentored by Iranian-American comedian Maz Jobrani, Kamyab has also worked with other talents like Dane Cook and met legends in the industry, like Jim Carrey. As he has become more comfortable with the stage, comedy

“It’s not something I really thought about until later on, but I guess it’s kind of like therapy or something,” said Kamyab. “Ultimately, at the end of the day, standup is about you being the most honest and truthful about who you are.”

Kalabash First things first, If you’re ever seeking the latest on Hillcrest’s ion theatre company, this is not the place to find it. In fact, you won’t see any local media information on the group at all anymore, except in retrospect.

Word is that ion has moved its operations to Boston after developing a cult following since its launch in 2004. Artistic directors Claudio Raygoza and former La Jolla Playhouse fundraiser Glenn Paris had fielded a local troupe for theater as disturbing as it was edgy, and they’d overcome a litany of administrative obstacles in getting there.

Paris has promised an update, meanwhile, ion’s departure means a conspicuous void in local performance.

Finnish folk poetry tells a story of the first time the kantele zither was played. The sound was so beautiful that everybody started to cry, and their tears turned into pearls when they touched ocean water.

At 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 24 at Kalabash School for Music and the Arts, Finland native Merja Soria performs this traditional music of her heritage.

She combines the ancient kantele with her poignant voice to sing the haunting songs of Suomi (that’s Finland to you and me).

From investigative journalism to investigating our own motives Doing it Better

By Natasha Josefowitz, Ph.D. Investigative journalism has in the modern day been the heart and soul of any good newspaper, holding powerful people to account to the rest of us. It’s always represented the bravery of publishers. Are they willing to anger advertisers and political bigwigs who might be their friends? Fearless journalism is hard to come by. Today it is “The story.” New language is making it imperative due to words like “fake news” and “alternate facts.” What are these if not a conscious effort to confuse and mislead a vulnerable public? For example, if someone doesn’t like a news story, he/she can just keep saying over and over it’s not true, it’s fake, and soon people believe what they are saying even with absent proof.

It is not only the written word

that has lost out; it is equally the advent of technology which makes it possible to take a photograph of anyone’s head and place it realistically on another body, possibly a naked one… or place a photograph of a person next to another in a friendly pose when neither had ever met. Voices can be altered to sound like they are saying things that never came out of the mouths of unsuspecting people. Perhaps most concerning of all are the outright denials of truthful, fact-based investigative reporters; as if a denial is an effective rebuke.

According to a report from Global Investigative Journalism Network, the need for investigative journalism has never been greater to “expose abuses of power, curbing corruption, fostering transparency, promoting accountability and strengthening democracy. It looks into human, corporate and government behavior and seeks prompt corrective action from people, agencies and institutions which can right the wrong it exposes.”

I recently had lunch with Lorie Hearn, who established an inves-

tigative reporting operation called inewsource in San Diego in 2009.

She had been the metro editor of the San Diego Union-Tribune and so had extensive experience with watchdog journalism. The kinds of stories that get reported by her nonprofit investigative newsroom include the plight of homeless students, animal cruelty, income inequality, toxic plumes, methane gases, refugee resettlement practices, traumatic brain injury, hospice care, the border wall, just to name a few. Inewsource checks and double-checks who says what, accuses whom, lies about, conceals from, distorts—and so corrective action is taken and the public becomes aware of the inconstancies perpetrated on it. Hearn’s newsroom backs up its facts with documents and data and shares all that source material with readers. A wonderful guarantee of transparency that all news organizations should practice.

So while I congratulated Lorie, her team, and all the media who check and recheck its facts, it made me ponder our own propensity to

withhold painful truths from ourselves. I am talking about our denial of our bad behaviors, our wishful thinking, our complacencies about the wrongs we witness, our lack of courage to confront the lies, to interfere when we see poor treatment of others. To admonish and correct all in the pursuit of truth, we need to start investigating on our own behaviors. What are we not willing to see, not able to hear, not wishing to understand—all of which might shine a less-than-complimentary light on ourselves. Yet it is only when we have identified our biases, prejudices, ambivalences, fears, and incompetencies that we can begin to evaluate and investigate what we see, hear, read in order to discover the validity, the truth of what is presented to us. We need to talk to others, read materials from accredited sources, get expert opinions and draw conclusions only when we have looked for facts that contradict our beliefs, not just facts that support them. Our brains tend to accept ideas we already believe in, ideas that fit in our frame of reference, thus reinforcing instead of ques-

tioning. That’s harder to do than ever today with polarized TV commentaries that play to our emotions and social media bubbles that just bolster what we feel comfortable hearing. Those biases become “truths.”

According to John Dewey, American philosopher, psychologist and educational reformer: The key to critical thinking is to maintain a state of doubt and to carry on systematic and protracted inquiry. Our brain falls prey to cognitive distortions. It overgeneralizes; it magnifies and overestimates or minimizes and underestimates. This can have an impact on impending dangers and on our abilities to cope. Interestingly, it all goes back to Socrates “know thyself ” translated into contemporary terms: Lead an investigative life!

From my garden: Plant trees to help our environment

After reading the recent story about the Canadian bobsledding Olympian who planted 1,000 trees to help offset the carbon footprint he feels he's created form traveling the world to compete, I remembered reading about the City of San Diego's efforts to plant more trees for its environmental future.

Trees are an important part of our ecosystem and help clean our air from harmful pollutants, such as; nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide. In a year's time, 100 large mature trees can remove 7 tons of carbon dioxide from the air we breathe. They also help cool our environment, prevent erosion, filter storm water runoff, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and their presence is said to help relieve mindand-body stress.

In the past decade, the tree population on public land has declined significantly due to deferred maintenance, budget constraints, extreme weather events and the recent drought where many trees

have succumbed to disease and pests. In 2017, the City adopted a five-year plan for its urban forestry program with the main goal of increasing the City's urban tree canopy. To help reach that goal, they

began a "Free Tree Program.”

To qualify for the Free Tree Program, the tree must be planted in the public-right-of-way and not on private property. The person who requests the planting must take

To help them reach their goal, the City is also encouraging property owners, both residential and commercial, to consider planting trees on their properties.

A tree-planting program dear to my heart is the Village Garden Clubs, Jacaranda Tree Program. In 2000, the City designated the lavender/blue flowering jacaranda (J. mimosifolia) the official non-native tree of San Diego. For a donation of $50, the club will plant a Jacaranda tree in areas of that benefit the general public. Since the program’s inception in 1986, they have planted more than 2,200 trees and most have been planted to honor friends or relatives. The Jacaranda is also on the City's list of trees approved for public-right-of ways.
