Planners laud McMansions subcommittee, hear board hopefuls in March elections By DAVE SCHWAB A subcommittee eyeing zoning rules designed to make it harder to construct coastal “McMansions” was thanked for its efforts, discharged and encouraged to go independent by the La Jolla Community Planning Association. That was the highlight of the community advisory group's Feb. 4 meeting. Candidates for the association's annual elections in March, who were present Feb. 4, also spoke out. Group chair Cindy Greatrex noted there are eight board positions open with 10 challengers. Unconscionably, Marnie, the sea lion that invited herself to dinner at the Marine Room, was refused sevice.
“I wanted to run again for this position because this is where things happen in our community,” said longtime La Jolla planner and Realtor Patrick Ahern. Ahern said his background in real estate, coupled with his long experience with La Jolla civic groups, qualifies him for the role. Candidate Helen Boyden, noting land-use issues are a “continuing challenge,” said “more outreach in the community needs to be done to help our neighborhoods.” Ed Coburn, a La Jollan since 1996, complained of factionalism on the board, noting, “I'd like SEE ELECTIONS>> PG. 13

In fact, that transition, as reflected by a couple unusual incidents during the past couple weeks, may already be under way. In February, Bird Rock Community Council introduced its new president, viewed an art rendering of a new merchant, and was updated on Midway bluff repair and on the community's maintenance assessment district plan. Incoming president Andrew Ward, who replaced outgoing president Jacqueline Bell, introduced himself. The rest of the BRCC board presently consists of John Newsam, vice president; Barbara Dunbar, treasurer; Tim Brictson, secretary; and board members Ron Fineman, Michelle Fulks, Lake Price and Greg Wadsworth.
