Council District 2 readies for changing of the guard

Fundraiser launches campaign to give Veterans Plaza a facelift BY TONY DE GARATE | THE BEACON Veterans Day comes only once a year, but many OBeceans and community groups say it’s high time to recognize members of the military for their sacrifice with a lasting tribute. They chose the Nov. 11 holiday to launch a fundraising effort for a $1 million
monument on Abbott Park north of the pier. The goal is to replace the 19-yearold plaza at the foot of Newport Avenue, where circular medallions etched into the concrete sidewalk honoring local vets have been rendered unreadable due to salt air, sand and foot traffic.
