Swastikas found on wall at Loma Portal Elementary

Police are continuing an investigation into a Halloween eve tagging that left two swastikas scrawled on a Point Loma elementary school parking lot wall.

The surf-wax graffiti was discovered by staff at Loma Portal Elementary School at 3341 Browning St. when they arrived for work the morning of Oct. 31.

“It was two swastikas about eight inches square,” said Mark Morici, Loma Portal principal. “We contacted both the San Diego Unified School District police and the San Diego Police Department, and they were both there within 20 minutes and took pictures and started an investigation.”

Morici added, however, that

“There didn’t seem to be much to go on. We don’t have video cameras on site. It’s in [police] hands now.”

A letter was subsequently sent by Morici to Loma Portal families concerning the incident pointing out “how tolerant we are.”

“We take this type of negative and hateful action very seriously, and it will not be tolerated at Loma Portal,” said Morici’s letter. “I want to assure you there is no place for hate at Loma Portal. We focus each day on kindness, positivity, and inclusivity so that all students and families feel a sense of belonging to the Loma Portal community.”

Morici said the tagging appeared on an inclined wall leading up to a home near the 100-year-old school.

“It was very hard for the public to see,” he said, adding it was viewable

mostly from the school’s parking lot.

“We don’t believe our students had anything to do with this,” the principal concluded.

Morici pointed out Loma Portal just started a new character development program this year focusing on a different admirable character trait every month.

“March was compassion. April was tolerance,” Morici said. “Right now we’re focusing on determination. It helps our students focus on the positive and working together and being inclusive of everybody.”

The principal also noted the school had just completed Red Ribbon week, which promotes healthy lifestyles and avoidance of drug use by students.

Morici intends to reach out to the greater community. “I’m hoping our

neighbors can watch out for our school after-hours and on weekends,” he said, while pointing out the difficulty of preventing use of any kind on school grounds after hours.

“It’s hard to keep skateboarders and others from using the facility

(entirely), even though it’s surrounded by a 10-foot high chainlink fence,” Morici said. He pointed out school grounds can be accessed, “If you have the motivation.”

Judge rules in competency trial of Point Loma killer

A judge ruled Oct. 23 that a former employee charged with killing his boss at a Point Loma auto repair shop in 2011 is not mentally competent for court proceedings.

A three-day mental competency trial was held for Nicolas Brito Rosales, 54, who is charged with fatally shooting Jalal (Joe) Abou, 63, at Joe's Auto Repair in the 1900 block of Rosecrans Street on April 19, 2011.

Attorneys presented competing mental health experts as to whether Rosales could understand court proceedings and whether he was too delusional to assist in his own defense.

San Diego Superior Court Judge Laura Halgren found he could not assist his attorney, Brian Schmidt, and attorneys were ordered to return to court Nov. 6 for placement as to where Rosales could be sent to recover his mental competency.

Man ordered to stand trial in OB murder

A judge has ordered a man to stand trial for murder in the death of Ocean Beach resident Peter Bentz, whose body has still not been found.

Bentz, 68, disappeared in Nov., 2017, and his brother filed a missing person's report after Bentz failed to show up for Thanksgiving with their family in San Pedro. Bentz was last seen alive on Nov. 20 going inside the 24-Hour Fitness gym on Midway Drive in a security video.

"He was the greatest big brother ever," said Kirk Bentz, who added he doesn't believe his brother is still alive. He was the first witness in the preliminary hearing before San Diego Superior Court Judge Jay Bloom.

Blood was found in his Greene Street apartment near the entertainment center, kitchen, and bathroom, and on the deadbolt knob on the front door, said San Diego Police Detective Kevin Iwasaki in the hearing. Bentz's video equipment, computer, monitor, and jewelry were missing, said Iwasaki.

An acquaintance, Brian Eleron Hancock, 48, has pleaded not guilty to murder and the special circumstance of murder during a robbery.

A judge set a trial date for Feb. 25, 2019.

Rosa Hammond told Judge Jay Bloom she and Hancock went to Bentz's apartment in November 2017 and that she and Hancock engaged in sexual relations. Hammond said Bentz was nearby and she found out later Bentz had apparently video recorded them having sex and that he posted it on the Internet.

She recalled seeing video equipment in Bentz's apartment. Hammond testified she told Hancock about it and he said, "He was going to talk to him." She said Hancock later said, "I fixed it."

Tori Alvarado Flores, 51, testified Hancock told her he was very angry at Bentz for posting the video online.

Hancock, an electrician who lived in National City, is married.

"He told me that he stabbed him seven times," said Flores.

Flores testified she was prosecuted with Hancock in an unrelated burglary case. She said she was placed on probation and finished a rehab program. She said Hancock asked her to be a lookout while he cleaned Bentz's apartment, but she refused.

Hammond said she recalled Hancock taking a credit card from Bentz's wallet and using it when

they both went to a fast food restaurant. Receipts from the restaurant and other stores with Bentz's credit cards were found in Hancock's possession, according to testimony.

Angelina Hancock, the defendant's wife, testified her husband appeared to be panicked and scared on Nov. 21, 2017. She said she assisted him in buying things to clean up Bentz's apartment, although she said she did not know who Bentz was or that he had been killed.

Angelina Hancock and Flores both signed a cooperation agreement with the District Attorney's office in which they will not be charged as an accessory as long as they testify truthfully.

Angelina Hancock said she was aware her husband had possession of Bentz' Toyota Highlander, which was found abandoned near Barrio Logan. A bag containing Bentz' personal papers and possessions was thrown over a chain-link fence in a ravine near Interstate 5, said Deputy District Attorney Genaro Ramirez.

Detective Iwasaki said a ring belonging to Bentz was found at a pawn shop where Hancock had visited.

Midway murder suspect pleads not guilty

A man suspected of killing a woman at a Midway Drive adult bookstore stood silently in court on Nov. 2 and was ordered to remain in jail without bail.

A not guilty plea was entered on behalf of Shaun Douglas Ward, 39, by his attorney in the Oct. 29 death of Diane Spagnuolo, 65, who worked as a clerk at the X-Spot adult bookstore at 3600 Midway Drive.

Ward refused to say a word or answer questions during his arraignment by San Diego Superior Court Judge Maureen Hallahan. She asked Ward to state his name and date of birth for the record and he refused to say anything.

Ward also refused to sign a state-

ment saying his attorney Raymond Aragon had advised him of his Constitutional rights. Aragon told the judge he was “non responsive” when he read his rights to Ward.

Hallahan then read a page of his rights to Ward in open court, but he refused to acknowledge that he had heard them. She read into the record that she had advised him and he gave no response.

“He has been nonverbal. He did not say he was not Shawn Ward,” said Hallahan.

Ward is charged with murder and robbery of the clerk, who had worked at the X-Spot for 24 years.

“It was a robbery. She happened to be there, wrong place and wrong time,” said the victim’s daughter, Alexis Wylie afterwards.

Jim passed away peacefully at his home in La Mesa on October, 19th. Jim was born and raised in San Diego. He was the youngest of four sons born to Harry and Catherine Lockwood. He grew up in Ocean Beach, and graduated from Point Loma High School. He went on to attend Miramar college where he studied fire science.

In 1977, he worked for the Department of Forestry, before beginning his 21 year career as a fire fighter with The City of El Cajon. Not one to sit around, during down time from the fire department, he enjoyed working assorted jobs. Including, school bus driver for children with special needs, manning the penalty box for the San Diego Gulls, and helping present the trophy at The Holiday Bowl. He also enjoyed traveling, Nascar, his jeep, and being the life of the party.

Jim will be missed very much. He leaves his brother Tom, and his niece Jamie, and nephews; Little Rich, Jimbo, Jesse, Jason and Josh. He also was the proud great uncle to 12 nieces and nephews. Along with more friends than one could possibly name.

“I want this man to be held accountable for what he has done,” said Wylie.

Wylie said her mother also worked for the Salvation Army for 16 years and was the assistant manager of her mobile home park in El Cajon.

“We were very close. It is a sudden shock as to what happened,” said Wylie. “She was a kind person. She was a very considerate person.”

The prosecutor did not go into the facts of the case in court or say how Spagnuolo was killed. Someone walked into the store at 1:45 p.m.

Oct. 29 and called 911 after finding Spagnuolo with trauma to her upper body.

Hallahan set a preliminary hearing for Nov. 16. Ward remains in jail.

Emergency bluff repairs next to the Ladera Street stairs in Sunset Cliffs is finished.

Work was done quickly – and under budget.

“The emergency cliff stabilization work at Ladera Street has been completed,” said Alec Phillipp, City public information officer. “The construction work took less than one week.”

Added Phillipp, “[The City] estimates that the construction cost will be less than our initial $1.5 million estimate.”

Phillipp said the repair project was triggered when portions of the bluff collapsed onto the stairs below in February. Cliff reconstruction work was focused on mitigating the geologic hazard adjacent to the stairs to increase public safety and ensure beach access by emergency personnel.

“A geotechnical consultant was on site throughout the project to ensure that the stability of the bluff wasn’t further compromised by our work,” said Phillipp, adding, “The contractor will be paid for the time and materials used to complete the work.”

On Aug. 6, the City Council allocated $1.8 million in Regional Park Improvement Funds for the Ladera Street Beach Access Stairway Emergency Project. That stairway had been closed and chained-off since a

Target confirms store in OB will open in 2019

With the antique center moved out, Minnesota-based Target has revealed one of its express outlets is in the works on Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach.

“Target has long been pursuing a site on Newport Avenue to serve the surrounding community,” said Jacque DeBuse of Target corporate. “I can confirm our plans to open a store in 2019 to bring an easy, convenient and affordable retail option to the Ocean Beach neighborhood.”

A Target Express is a downsized version of the original Target store introduced by the chain across the nation in numerous sizes and assortments.

The express business model is meant to create a more locally relevant bigbox experience in urban areas.

DeBuse said the company will be more forthcoming about sharing details soon, including, “an exact opening timeframe and details on our product assortment and services for this particular store.”

It was a match for Shane.

“It just fit,” he said. “We have three generations in my family in the pet industry. My grandfather had a pet store in the Bay Area. My dad was always in the pet industry as well. One of my first jobs ever was working in a warehouse for a pet distributor, pulling orders.”

San Diego Airport contributes nearly $12 billion to economy A new Economic Impact Study completed for San Diego International Airport (SAN) indicates a dramatic increase in regional employment, payroll and economic impact as a result of the airport. The study quantifies the airport’s total economic contributions to the region at nearly $12 billion annually.

“This study highlights the airport’s role as far more than a vital transportation resource for the San Diego region,” said Kimberly Becker, Airport Authority president/CEO. “SAN is a regional asset that is also a major economic driver and job creator, constantly looking at ways to improve the passenger experience and help the region become increasingly global.”

The study measures the direct and indirect economic impacts generated by SAN. To do so, the study compared 2017 data from the U.S. Department of Transportation, San Diego Tourism Authority, Airport Authority and on-airport tenants.

The study was last conducted in 2013 using data from 2012. Since then, the airport has undertaken a number of construction projects to

Obecians Shane and Erika Bancroft were not entirely happy in their respective jobs, but the couple have since found a new calling in the pet business.

“We wanted to show pride in being a small family-owned and operated business,” said Shane of their newly minted store, Bancroft Pet Shop, at 1874 Bacon St. The weeks-old pet shop is primarily a pet boutique and supplies shop with a self-serve dog wash.

Right now it’s more of a service,” said Shane of their pet wash. “But there’s always room to grow. We’ll see how things go. See where the demand is.”

Shane had been an auto technician working on BMWs, which is where he met Erika, who was in human resources, and was on her third leased BMW at that time.

The pair began brainstorming a lot to figure out what they really wanted to do. They tossed out alternatives, one of which was developing a card board game. But pet products finally won out.

Total employment supported by the airport has increased by 31 percent over the past five years. In 2017 nearly 118,000 residents in the region were employed directly or indirectly due to the activities at SAN, generating nearly $3.9 billion in total annual payroll. Of total employment in San Diego County, SAN supports 5.7 percent of people employed in the region.

The growth in economic impact is largely due to the airport’s increase in passenger traffic. In 2012, the airport accommodated nearly 17.3 million passengers, which grew to nearly 22 million in 2017 passengers.

Business and leisure visitors spend money while visiting the region, thereby helping support additional economic impacts. According to the San Diego Tourism Authority, visitors arriving by air spend an average of $835 per person per trip.

“I’ve always had a passion for animals,” added Erika.

“A lot of our products we source from the manufacturer and are made in the USA,” said Shane.

“We only partner with companies that share our values that we believe in,” concurred Erika.

Touring their OB store reveals the couple’s personal touches. All their furniture is homemade. Some of the products, too, like doggie bandanas.

There are leashes, collars and durable toys of all kinds, dog bowls, shampoos, supplements, poop bags, natural flea prevention products,

brushes, nail clippers, flea combs.

There is also plenty of pet food of every type, including some vegan choices, plus freeze-dried raw treats and dog jerkies. They have lifejackets and alpaca sweaters for dogs, pet first aid kits and CBD items, as well as some of the most cozy pet sleep beds available anywhere.

So far, Bacon Street has proved to be a solid choice for a pet shop.

“One nice thing about living in OB is you don’t hardly ever have to drive anywhere: You have everything right here,” concluded Erika.

So far, the pet business has been good to the Bancrofts.

“It’s not like your car’s broke,” quipped Shane. “It’s a happy interaction with customers.

Erika agreed.

“It’s a happy experience,” she said.

Dr. Russell Clyde Tontz Jr., DDS October 8, 1943 – October 31, 2018 Dr. Russell Clyde Tontz Jr., D.D.S., of Point Loma, San Diego was called home to Heaven on October 31, 2018. After a commendable battle with cancer, Russell peacefully took his last breath surrounded by loved ones. Born October 8, 1943, Russ enjoyed and embraced each day of his 75 years here on earth. Russ is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years Maureen and a legacy of loved ones, including his treasured ten children: Dr. Russell III (Kara), Joseph (Evangelina), Dr. Paul, Bryan, Mary, John, Eileen Paradis (Robby), Timothy, Jeanne Martignetti (Nick), and Dr. Allison, as well as his cherished ten grandchildren: Denyse, Nicole, Thomas, Ryan, Kailyn, Alexa, Hailey, Leo, Cole, and Camille. He is also survived by his three dear siblings: sister Mary Anne O’Neill (Marty), brother and best friend Dr. Bill Tontz (Terry), and sister Lorie Walker (Mark). Russ, lovingly referred to as “Uncle Russ” by many, was particularly known as such by his many adored nieces and nephews. Russ also leaves behind many beloved friends around the country, primarily many throughout the Point Loma/Ocean Beach area where he loved to participate in and serve his community with a smile. He is preceded in death by his parents Russell and Marie Tontz, his nephew John Brady, his niece Christina O’Neill, and many dear friends.

Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Russ graduated from Loyola College, Maryland in 1965. While attending, he dominated on the tennis courts and earned his induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 2016 for his key role on the 1963 undefeated tennis team. Russ continued on to Georgetown University for dental school and was awarded his Degree of Dental Surgery (DDS) in 1969. Following dental school, Russ joined the United States Navy. He served his country on the USS Independence aircraft carrier and duty stations at Naval Hospital, Camp Pendleton, and NMCSD from 1969-1975 continuing his duty in the reserves separating at the rank of CDR.. While stationed in San Diego, God led him to his best friend and love of his life, Maureen.

Six months later, both devout Catholics,

they were married in June 1970 at the Mission of San Luis Rey alongside Russ’ brother Bill and Maureen’s sister, Terry in a double wedding. Together, the four of them, raised their respective ten children (both sets of 6 boys and 4 girls), in Point Loma. The Tontz family patriarch, Russ always put his family first, no matter the self-sacrifice required. He never viewed the sacrifice as such, instead cherished this role as father and provider. He served his family with an eager, admirable joy. He was a loyal, loving, dedicated father, grandfather, husband, uncle, brother, and friend.

Russ tirelessly served the community of Ocean Beach (OB) and Point Loma for over 40 years through his Family Dental practice. A staple on Sunset Cliffs Blvd, his office sat just across the street from his home parish of Sacred Heart where he frequented daily mass with Maureen and his children. Russ loved his patients and showed this not only through his gentle, conservative, meticulous work on their teeth, but also and more importantly through his caring smile, sense of humor, genuine patient interest and uncanny ability to make everyone feel at home and a part of the family--even in the dental chair. Russ lived his Christian values by reaching out to the homeless, the elderly, the financially strained, and the infirmed and by caring for them as Jesus would.

Without judgment, without financial concern, without reservations, Russ made time to help others anyway he could; this

aid typically manifested itself in his Godgiven talent of dental care, but certainly not exclusively. To meet Russ, was to become his friend, and to know Russ, was to love him.

Russ loved tennis, dentistry, sunsets, his late pug “Little Man”, books, science, music, expanding and sharing his knowledge, Ocean Beach, Poma’s, Nico’s, RJS, OB Donuts, the desert, among many other things. Above all else, Russ loved his wife, his partner in everything, Maureen. Following this great love, was his children and grandchildren, his brother Bill, his sister-in-law Terry and their children, his beloved sisters Mary Anne and Lorie, their spouses Marty and Mark, and their children, his extended family, his friends, and God. A philosopher and scientist, wise in many subjects, he spent most of his free time passionately sharing his knowledge with others and indirectly serving as a teacher and life coach for anyone he encountered. His humble ability to disarm a stranger with a smile, to not take himself or life too seriously and his gift of love for all people, are all things Russ would want to be remembered for and emulated by.

A Memorial Mass to celebrate Russ’ life and legacy will be celebrated at 10 AM on Saturday, November 10th at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Point Loma, 2802 Cadiz Street, San Diego, CA 92110.

OB entrepreneur pedals principles of social equity and healthy living

Jamie Hampton, founder of Mixte Communications Inc. public relations, was recently named a “Top 40 Under 40 Business Leader” by both the San Diego Business Journal and San Diego Metropolitan Magazine, as well as being declared a “Top 50 Business Influencer” by The Daily Transcript.

Named for a type of bicycle frame, Mixte’s success is simple, claims Ocean Beach resident Hampton, an avid crosscountry bicyclist.

A University of Oregon alumna before moving to San

Diego, Hampton’s bicycling background has helped shape her business philosophy.

“After I came to San Diego, I sold my car and rode my bike to work,” she said, pointing out bicycling figured promi-

nently into the women’s rights movement early-on.

“In the 1800s, women wore long dresses and were somewhat reliant on men,” she said. “The bike frame allowed them to ride in their

long dresses and to have some independence.”

The bicycle not only gave women a way to get around freely, but the inherent impracticalities of long skirts gradually caused them to fall out of fashion in favor of shorter skirts allowing more movement and greater safety for cycling.

Hampton said bikes, and their distinguished history, has always inspired her.

“As our name implies, we see the bicycle as sort of a symbol as we work on health, the environment and social justice,” she said.

Point Loman entrepreneur brings Gen. Z culture to Fortune 500 companies

It’s easy to forget that “millennials” are no longer the hot, new generation on the block, and that a younger generation, Gen. Z, is now taking center stage, leading school marches for gun control and raising awareness during the #MeToo movement.

In a few years, many Gen. Zers will be college graduates, yet most marketing advertisements still have tunnel vision on the once-teen millennials and Generation Ys, who have since jetted off into the adult world.

A year ago, Point Loma native Madison Bregman noticed where advertising fell short for her generation and decided to start her own consulting company called GirlZ, at the age of 19.

“These companies have such large marketing budgets and they’re completely not aware of the fact that generation Z and today’s youth are different and need to be marketed to differently,” said Bregman. “And, as someone who is

part of that generation, I can give unique insights to help make a company’s product more appealing.”

It’s only been about three months since Bregman founded GirlZ, but she’s already had a chance to work with the NFL, Darden Restaurants, EA (Electronic Arts) Sports and market research company NPD Group.

Bregman says she “helps big companies solve big problems,” from influencer marketing to social media tactics to highlevel branding, as well as analyzing and interpreting data on behalf of the brands.

“It was surprising to see how much a company relies on data,” said Bregman. “You can hire a 60-year-old to look at data and arguably find the same sort of things as a 30year-old, but a younger analyst can go beyond that data, and can offer better insight to how a company should market.”

“I think I made like 25 cents,” laughed Bregman.

But the most influential experience was when she started a talent management company in high school.

The business fizzled out, with Bregman being only 17 and legally unable to sign a contract, but she was still able to work with musicians from the UK and YouTube personalities like HelloXRyan.

Then, Bregman read a Forbes story on 17-year-old Connor Blakley, high school dropout and founder of YouthLogic, a Fortune 500 consulting company. Bregman contacted Blakley and the two began consulting together.

“No one was talking about our generation and helping

companies with advertising to us,” said Blakley. “Madison was someone who was not only hungry, but actually had the ability and drive to do something special.”

Bregman soon gained ample experience working for highlevel clients and decided to start GirlZ, inspired by the same Gen. Z mission as YouthLogic, but with a focus on helping companies reach women and girls.

“If you look at Generation Z, there’s obviously a difference with the brands girls like and the brands guys like and even what influences them,” said Bregman. “Advertisements should be sensitive to that.”

She added, “There’s a lot of talk about women in the work force and gender in the work-

place. I’m not going to lie, it’s definitely been easier for me to reach out to female CMOs and female VPs.” But Bregman is not doing this alone. Blakley sold his business last month and has been working as an advisor for GirlZ. Despite the challenges Bregman has faced as a young woman in business and the lectures Blakley has received on his education choices, getting to work with the NFL is a bragging right for any consultant.

“We’re making an impact, not only on behalf of the brands, but also for women,” said Blakley. “Especially with all the things happening in society and our culture with women and the #MeToo movement, I think it’s special and crucial for young women

to assert themselves in the business world and show others that it’s possible.”

Bregman even has ideas for how companies can involve other young people in their business endeavors.

“I think a lot of companies should hire young people to come in once a week after school to talk about their interests in what’s going on in the world and what they want to see with the brand,” said Bregman.

As a junior communications major at Santa Clara University, the young entrepreneur plans to continue with her consulting business post-graduation, saying her long-term ambition is to buy the LA Chargers.

“I’d also love to work with Jack In The Box headquarters in San Diego” said Bregman.

“As long as it’s still working, and I still have good ideas, I plan to keep GirlZ running. I’m having a lot of fun with it and I plan to do this as long as I can.”

The Rady Children’s Ice Rink is a popular holiday attraction at Liberty Station.

Ice rink at Liberty Station set to open Nov. 17 Kick off the holiday season with outdoor ice skating at the Rady Children’s Ice Rink at Liberty Station beginning Saturday, Nov. 17 and closing Sunday, Jan. 6. Net proceeds benefit psychosocial services in the Rady Children’s Hospital’s Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.

“Each year, more than 300 families in our community learn that their child has cancer,” said Bridgett Brown, president of Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary.

“But in San Diego, we are fortunate to have the experts at Rady Children’s providing the best care possible – and our friends and neighbors supporting their work. Proceeds from every ice rink ticket purchased offers hope and

support for those families fighting childhood cancer.”

The ice rink will stay open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. through Sunday, Jan. 6, except on Thanksgiving and Christmas, and will be featured in Liberty Station’s Tree Lighting and Holiday Festivities on Friday, Nov. 30 with special performances, Skating Santa and live entertainment in the Central Promenade.

“The opening of the Rady Children’s Ice Rink at Liberty Station signifies the beginning of Salute the Season at Liberty Station and we can’t wait to have the ice rink in our neighborhood again,” said Rick Wilson, executive director of the Liberty Station Community Association. “The

ice rink, and its support of kids undergoing cancer treatment, is a pillar in our community during this special time of year. Each year the ice rink attracts thousands of residents, community members and visitors to Liberty Station to enjoy the holiday cheer all season long.”

Throughout the season tickets are $15 for adults and $13 for children.

Discounted tickets for members of the military $10 with I.D. Tickets for groups of 10 or more are available for $10 each and school special group tickets are available for $5 each with RSVP. Punch cards for five visits are available for $50. Tickets can be purchased on-site and are good for reentry throughout the day.

Thousands of pink Pussyhats flooded cities all over the United States last January during the Women’s March. Each woven strand proudly endured the frigid blusters as women held up their signs in proclamation that they would no longer be silenced, ever.

Now, those revolutionary pink hats have joined the many pink shirts, pink gloves and pink signs of Women’s March memorabilia flooding the halls of the Women’s Museum of California to celebrate the events happening right now in women’s history.

“We were just overwhelmed with donations for this year’s exhibit,” said Melissa Jones, director of marketing for the Women’s Museum.

“We have signs, we have buttons, we have T-shirts… my personal favorite, though, are these pink boxing gloves someone brought to the march and had all the participants sign them.”

The exhibit, “Marching Towards Empowerment,” has been open since last Friday, but will remain open during the museum’s annual Fall Benefit Dinner, taking place Nov. 15. Not only will guests of the benefit have the opportunity to walk through the 100 years of Women’s

Being a screenwriter, artist, and activist, Suh refers to herself as a “Craftivist.” She recently wrote a book titled, “DIY Rules for a WTF World: How To Speak Up, Get Creative and CHANGE THE WORLD,” sharing her tools, tips, experiences and “rules” for getting bold, getting out there, and getting the world to change. While her Pussyhats will be on display only, her book will be available for purchase at the benefit dinner.

“Krista’s vision just fit so well with this year’s exhibit,” said Jones. “Our whole goal is to empower women, and what better way to do that than to hear a female leader like Krista speak and motivate others to act?

Songwriters Acoustic Nights celebrates its 10th anniversary on Nov. 18 with a special concert at Holy Trinity Anglican Church. The concert series was started by Mitch Feingold in 2008 at Swedenborg Hall in Hillcrest, before moving to Ocean Beach in 2016.

“I am surprised how fast time flies,” Feingold said good-naturedly.

“It seems like only yesterday that we did our first show.” He notes there is a lot of competition in the local music community, with dozens of events each week. “There are so many great music shows to choose from locally, so Songwriters Acoustic Nights really depends on word of mouth. What motivates me to continue? It gets down to the love of music and the many talented people I get to meet,” he said.

The artists featured in the anniversary show will be multiple SDMA nominee, pianist Normandie Wilson, guitarist Verdell Smith of the group Soul Ablaze, Americanabased troubadour Levi Dean and banjo player Fast Heart Mart, aka Martin Stamper.

The night’s musicians will play in round-robin style, offering up songs and the stories behind their creations. “I love song-writers circles because they are focused and offer the full experience of the songwriter,” said Wilson.

Annual ‘Tellabration’ returns to Ocean Beach Nov. 10

A popular event is returning to Ocean Beach again next month.

The Storytellers of San Diego will present their 28th annual "Tellabration" on Saturday, Nov. 10 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Bethany Lutheran Church, 2051 Sunset Cliffs Blvd.

The group is composed of storytellers with a diverse and dynamic range of styles who promise to regale those in attendance with mul-

tiple memorable moments. This year's theme is "Sea Less Traveled," a perfect topic for the event's proximity to the refreshing ocean air.

"Tellabration" is a worldwide event, with similar celebrations taking place in countries around the world.

This marks the group's third "Tellabration" in Ocean Beach.

Storytelling, a somewhat lost art, is a passion for members of the San Diego group who promise an intimate and up-close evening of

intriguing entertainment performed without notecards.

Appearing at the event will be tellers Leo Baggerly, Jessica Baris, Patti Christensen, Aunt Li-Anne, Fred Laskowski, Marilyn McPhie, David Schmidt and Eric George Tauber.

The event is recommended for ages 12 and up. Tickets are $15 at the door and limited parking is available at the church lot and at the diocese lot across the alley.

Local sports history will be made tomorrow night, Nov. 9, when Point Loma High School hosts its first-ever football playoff game at night.

The school, now in its 94th year, will use its new stadium lights when they host Western League opponent Lincoln in a CIF Div. II quarterfinal match.

The Pointers defeated the Hornets 33-20 on Oct. 20 at Lincoln when they scored three touchdowns in the final quarter to erase a 20-12 halftime deficit, shutting Lincoln down as well after intermission.

Point Loma finished as the No. 4 seed in CIF Div. II football playoffs that began last Friday (Nov. 2).

That means the Dogs received a coveted first-round bye in the playoffs. They were seeded behind No. 1 Granite Hills, No. 2 Poway and No. 3 Valley Center. The four teams have now had a week to scout opponents and allow injuries to heal.

The No. 5 seeded Hornets blew out No. 12 seed Westview 54-14 last week in their first round game.

The CIF bracket shows the winner of the Pointer-Hornet game will play the survivor of a showdown between No. 1 Granite Hills and No. 8 Ramona (who the Pointers defeated 41-27 in week two). If Granite Hills loses, the Pointers would host that semifinal game.

In previous years when the Pointers earned home games CIF has directed the team play its "home

game" at a neutral field.

Girls volleyball The Pointer volleyball team's quest for another CIF championship ended last week when they lost a marathon match to eventual champion Santa Fe Christian.

Playing in the Div. I tournament, the Pointer girls had defeated both Otay Ranch and La Jolla Country Day by 3-0 scores before their semifinal match against the Eagles.

The Eagles won the first set 25-20 before the Pointers came back for a 25-17 victory in the second.

Deputy District Attorney Laura Evans told San Diego Superior Court Judge Maureen Hallahan that Freeman’s blood/alcohol level was .28, which is three times the legal limit.

“She put the entire community at risk,” said Evans, who noted a passenger in Freeman’s car suffered moderate injuries.

Evans said Freeman previously worked as a server at an East County casino and she was taught a course about serving alcoholic drinks. Evans added that Freeman had a relationship with someone who was later charged with DUI. Hallahan set bail at $1 million, and she remains in the Las Colinas Women’s Detention Facility.

A bail review was to be held Nov. 7 and a preliminary hearing was set for Nov. 15. She is from Santee.

If Freeman has a trial, a jury may have to decide whether she committed second-degree murder or gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

DOGS FROM FLORIDA NOW AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION Some of the dogs transferred to San Diego from shelters in Florida are ready to find loving homes. Bevil’s presentation will be based on his recently published Journal of San Diego History article on the Sept.

25, 1978 crash of PSA Flight 182, and the effect it had – and still has – on San Diego’s collective memory. He will also discuss how the crash’s aftermath contributed to major changes in modern commercial air travel safety rules and procedures; and he will invite attendees to share their memories of that horrific day.

RIDE THE POINT ON NOV. 10 Ride the hidden, unridden, and forbidden Point Loma to support pancreatic cancer research. Point Loma teen is first person to earn Master Ocean Angler title Thirteen-year-old Ethan Mayes of Point Loma has become the first person to earn the title of Master Ocean Angler from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (CDFW) California Fishing Passport program by catching at least 50 different species of saltwater game fish.

Mayes, an eighth-grade honor roll student, reeled in a black-and-yellow rockfish from the Coast Guard Pier in Monterey on Aug. 13 to record his 50th ocean game fish species.

Mayes’ exuberance at landing the smallish rockfish and scurrying to find a camera to document his catch left tourists and fellow pier anglers a little perplexed about all the excitement over catching a small fish.

“I was so happy to finally do it,” Mayes said of seeing his 50th saltwater species on the end of his line.

Mayes caught his 51st species – a

cabezon – about an hour later from the same spot. The next day, aboard a Monterey fishing boat, he landed species No. 52 – a yellowtail rockfish – and followed that up less than a week later with species No. 53 – a 50-plus-inch, 15-pound dolphinfish caught outside of Mission Bay aboard a charter boat.

“Ethan has the adventurous spirit and determination needed to travel the state’s waters in search of new fish to catch – which are the hallmarks of a California Fishing Passport Master Angler,” said CDFW’s Mary Patyten, awards administrator for the program. “It really is an amazing feat, especially for such a young angler. He is an extraordinary young man.”

CDFW’s California Fishing Passport program was launched in January 2007 to encourage Californians of all ages and backgrounds to

experience fishing for a variety of fresh and saltwater fish and shellfish. The California Fishing Passport booklet is the centerpiece of the program, allowing anglers to record the date, place and species of sport fish and shellfish caught within California waters. Each catch must be verified by a photo or a witness signature. Each catch can then be stamped by an official stamping agent such as a CDFW License Sales Office.

Fourteen different recognition awards can be earned – from the My First Fish Award to the Supreme Master Angler Award available to those who have earned a Master award in at least two other award categories – such as Warmwater Fishing (Inland), Coldwater Fishing (Inland), Ocean Fishing and Shellfish (Inland and Ocean). Mayes previously achieved the Ocean Angler

Award – for catching 10 different qualifying species – and the Accomplished Ocean Angler Award – for catching 25 different qualifying species.

With a minimum of 50 different ocean species, however, the bar may be highest to reach Master Ocean Angler status. A Master Coldwater Angler, for example, needs to catch and record just 10 different qualifying fish. A Master Warmwater Angler needs to catch at least 25 different warmwater fish species.

No California angler has yet earned the Supreme Master Angler Award, though Mayes said his next goal is the Shellfish category. Catching at least 15 different qualifying inland and ocean shellfish would earn him the additional title of Shellfish Master and qualify him for Supreme Master Angler status.
