OB Plaza is demolished.

And some Obecians are distressed the building complex's '50s-era architecture is being replaced.

But the project architect, F.L. Hope Planning & Architecture, promises that what's going in the commercial space on the corner of Cable Street and Santa Monica Avenue will be both practical and aesthetic.

Ocean Beach Planning Group chair John Ambert, an architect, said losing the existing building was regrettable.

"It is a shame the project had to be demolished,” Ambert said. “The OBPG always advocates for preservation and rehabilitation of our existing building stock, before demolition and ground-up new construction. We hope the project team will implement a modern design style that compliments the unique character of our beach community."

“We tried to do a remodel, but we couldn't the way the building is built,” said F.L. Hope. “Remodeling would have involved taking the entire roof off – and that would have been really hard.”

Hope noted the style of OB Plaza, as originally rendered by architect Jim Wheeler in the late '50s, was “not unique, [Wheeler] did them all over the place, including on Rosecrans.”

Discussing OB Plaza's fate, Hope said, “The days of the small clinics are going. With the new kind of express healthcare, there really isn't a lot of need for small little clinic space.”

Ocean Beach Planning Group approved plans for OB Plaza's redevelopment in 2015. Hope said all necessary building permits and approval have been acquired for the project.

The architect said the new complex is being built on spec, so architecturally, it has been designed to allow, whichever tenants ultimately move in, to customize their spaces.

“It's a shell,” said Hope of the project's construction, which is likely to begin by the end of this summer and last nine months to a year culminating in early 2018. “The exterior will be finished, and the interior will be drywalls.”

Hope classified the project as “storefront retail, with indoor-outdoor space and patios fronting the street. There could be as many as nine different tenants – or as few as two or three.”

The project will be a boon to the surrounding neighborhood, said Hope.

“The big thing is we want to keep that street alive, pedestrian-friendly, with a walk-up, Newport Street-type of development, but a little more modern,” he said adding, “We're providing parking onsite.”

Thankfully, times have changed and we go by our first names, and women owned businesses thrive in Ocean Beach!

Answer:

No, these assets do not need to be titled in the name of your Trust and, in fact, they cannot be.

The first beneficiary should be your spouse or another adult beneficiary, but in certain circumstances the contingent beneficiary should be your Trust. This will ensure the assets will transfer to your spouse upon your death and, if your spouse should die before you, the assets will be distributed as you have set forth in your Trust. However, if the beneficiaries of your Trust are adults and the assets are split equally amongst them, you may name them as the contingent beneficiaries instead of naming the Trust. As a lawyer, Point Loma resident Kathryn Vaughn sees the big picture and the final outcome of situations.

Over and over again, she sees that investing in the community’s future is a very real solution. Rather than hope that other people will step in and do something, Vaughn has taken it upon herself.

Vaughn is a volunteer advocate for the arts and cultural programs in San Diego. Though she has her own full-time law practice and is married with two sons, she finds the time and energy to delve into many nonprofits, including SD Police Foundation, USO San Diego, Legal Eagles for Youth, and Just in Time for Foster Youth.

Her vision for a better San Diego starts with what she hopes for children.

“I want all children to have a chance to live their dream,” said Vaughn.

Her own dream became a reality after Vaughn left home at 16.

Through the guidance of caring mentors, she ended up at Point Loma Nazarene University, where she found opportunities to begin living out her ambitions. Because of this chapter in her life, Vaughn is driven to volunteer with organizations that support children.

“I believe that every child has the ability and inspiration to dream big;

they are the next generation to step up and impact the world,” she said.

Supporting the military and police department is also important to Vaughn, because she knows they put their lives on the line to protect the freedoms that people enjoy every day of their lives. Due to the active military’s long tours of duty and the local police officers’ schedules, many of their children do not see their parents for months on end.

“Through community programs, we can help,” Vaughn said. “I believe that we all need to stand up and advocate for what we believe is right for our future.”

When the City Council proposed 31 percent budget cuts for art, science and cultural programs in Balboa Park, Vaughn helped organize a rally downtown at City Hall to fight back for the arts.

Workshop set for Cañon Street park plans

Plans to implement a new pocket park for Cañon Street in Point Loma approved by the City Council more than a year ago are forging ahead with a Wednesday, July 26 public workshop planned at United Portuguese SES Hall.

“The public workshop starting at 6:30 p.m. is just to get public input,” said Don Sevrens, a Peninsula Community Planning Board member speaking on his own behalf about the park site, which he noted was owned for years by the city's Public Works Department, which used it primarily to store machinery and building materials for local projects.

Sevrens and colleague Jon Linney, PCPB board chair acting independently, have spearheaded development of a new pocket park on the vacant property.

“A park has been in the community plan since 1987,” Sevrens noted, adding KTU&A Planning and Landscape Architecture was selected recently by the city to handle the design work for the pocket park's plant palette.

Pointing out the “topography of the triangle-shaped park is not suitable for a playing field,” Sevrens said, and added the site is “pretty much ready to go.”

Once Point Lomans have weighed-in with their wishes for amenities at the new pocket park in July, Sevrens noted a second, followup workshop will be held sometime in September to flesh out plans for

specific park improvements.

Sevrens added one of the stipulations placed by the city on developing the Cañon Street site as a public park was that park promoters “had to have a nonprofit sponsor.” He added, “That's been the problem for 26 years – that no group was willing to take on the project,” he said pointing out park development is “too big” for a service club like Kiwanis or Rotary to handle.

That problem was resolved when United Portuguese SES consented to be the nonprofit buttressing creation of the new pocket park.

“It's what the public wants,” said Sevrens concerning future park development. “It's going to be a park.

The money's in place. The question now is, what's going to go in it?”

What are some of the possibilities for the park?

“Public art in keeping with whatever theme is adopted for the park, possibly nautical and history,” answered Sevrens, who noted the community has turned thumbs down on one suggestion.

“No one wants the traditional tot lot with a slide and swing set,” he said. “The idea (now) is something

for the kids’ imagination. One idea is a fanciful replica of the San Salvador with an upper deck for kids to play on, a history wall and a stylized Portuguese compass.”

Sevrens said even a replica “plank” for young children to walk on has been envisioned as a park amenity.

On March 8, 2016, the City Council voted unanimously to earmark $840,000 from Peninsula developer impact fees for design and construction of a new pocket park on a two-thirds-acre lot on Avenida de Portugal above Cañon Street.

The new pocket park, already three years in preliminary planning, is in Roseville in Point Loma, one of the city's oldest neighborhoods.

It is the first public park approved in Roseville which is “underparked” in terms of being well below the city's population-based minimum standard of 2.8 acres in parkland per 1,000 population.

Sevrens said all the park's construction drawings should be done by February 2019 and a year later, he added, the park could be ready.

District 2 Councilmember Lorie Zapf, representing the Peninsula, endorsed plans for Cañon Street.

“The pocket park at the end of Avenida de Portugal is moving forward with public design workshops beginning this summer,” Zapf said. “I am excited to see the creation of park space for the Roseville Community.”

There has been some opposition expressed in the past to the prospect of a Cañon Street pocket park, with at least one neighbor arguing the park could become a homeless hangout and add to traffic and parking congestion in the neighborhood.

PCPB member David Dick has also stressed caution, suggesting it might be more prudent to do an assessment of other conceivable community needs before committing all available funding to a single project.

Peninsula residents working to improve Voltaire Corridor

Point Loma and the city are continuing to parry over long-soughtafter traffic and aesthetic improvements on Voltaire Street Bridge.

And creation of a new maintenance assessment district is one funding mechanism being considered by residents to get the project off the ground.

“This would be a landmark on an entryway to Point Loma, a number of yards away from Nimitz Boulevard, and one of only three entryways into the community,” said Don Sevrens, a member of Peninsula Community Planning Board, working on bridge enhancement. “This would be the only opportunity to have a landmark bridge.”

Sevrens said Voltaire corridor representatives and half a dozen city officials met recently to hear the city's presentation for a possible “narrow scope maintenance assessment district.”

“Given time constraints and cost of MAD preparation, we will simply write checks and create an endowment fund for future maintenance,” said Sevrens. “We will ask the Point

Loma Association to be trustee for the endowment. Our goal is still half a dozen ornamental or historic-style lamp posts and an attractive railing that creates a suspension bridge effect.”

Architect Joe Holasek, a member of the Peninsula Community Planning Board, is doing the design for Voltaire Bridge improvements.

Sevrens said the idea of rehabilitating the bridge is to have design patterns reminiscent of Golden Gate Bridge on fencing to be installed, as well as adding ornamental acorn lights while making the bridge more bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly.

The notion of rehabilitating Voltaire Street Bridge dates back to 1997. Originally built in 1959, the bridge passes over Nimitz Boulevard on the 3900 block of Voltaire Street between Wabaska Drive and Sea Colony Court.

way to their neighborhood and wants something a bit nicer than what one finds on a freeway overpass,” noted Sevrens, a former journalist and 50-year Point Loma resident.

“With the city and community working together, we could have a striking entryway to the Peninsula — and a very attractive bridge that ties into the ‘Welcome to Point Loma’ sign and the wonderful landscaping that the Point Loma Association has put into place on Nimitz Boulevard,” he said.

Sevrens contends “Changes to the bridge and a related Wabaska Drive project can set the tone for a major revamping of the entire Voltaire Street corridor.”

The Wabaska Drive project is being spearheaded by Nicole Burgess, District 2 rep on the City of San Diego Bicycle Advisory Com-

mittee. Burgess has been lobbying for bicycling improvements on Wabaska, which will “Put bikes on the inside making the vehicles be the buffer, so the bicyclist does not have to go next to fast-moving traffic. For Wabaska, this physical barrier will be a variety of parked cars, bollards, flex posts, and maybe even some planters.”

Previously, Burgess pointed out unprotected bike paths “Are just paint and no physical barrier. In these types of facilities, cyclists must ride next to moving vehicles and be cautious of door-zone conflicts. A protected bikeway is safer, more comfortable, and therefore increases bike ridership.”

Burgess hopes adding bike improvements on Wabaska will “provide a model for the city.”

She added the Wabaska bicycle infrastructure improvement project

will dovetail neatly into railing and other improvements being planned on the Voltaire Street bridge nearby.

Pointing out PCPB board member Joe Holasek, an architect, is willing to work pro bono on Voltaire Street Bridge's re-design, Sevrens estimated the project could cost as little as $150,000. He added the MAD to pay for the enhanced bridge's continuing upkeep could be in place as soon as a year from now, by summer 2018.

“It will be the responsibility of the community to identify the costs of these bridge improvements to be put in place,” said Sevrens. “Holasek would add schematic drawings to the city's specifications. It's not a lot of red tape. And it's the community doing this. And it's an enlightened attitude by the city to let us (Point Loma) come in and do this.”

District 2 Councilmember Lorie Zapf, whose district includes the Peninsula, is on board with the bridge's renovation.

“The retrofit of the Voltaire Street Bridge is great for the entire Voltaire Corridor,” Zapf said. “I’m looking forward to the long-term revitalization of the Voltaire Corridor.”

Point Loma Coffee percolates new name TechOutfitters, at 1302 Rosecrans St., opened last September as a full service coffee bar and tech store that also provides phone repair at the corner of Dickens and Rosecrans in Point Loma Village.

Now the coffee side of TechOutfitters is claiming a name of its own: Point Loma Coffee. It staged a grand (re)opening July 15 as part of a rebranding campaign.

“Point Loma Coffee serves San Diego’s best craft-roasted coffees,” explained co-owner Susan Schedel.

Bay City brews ‘72 and Hoppy’ for San Diego The San Diego Tourism Authority has teamed with Midway-based Bay City Brewing Co. to create a specialty beer, "72 and Hoppy," making “America's Finest City” the first U.S. travel destination with an official brew.

Tourism officials described the new craft brew, a session India Pale Ale, as "relaxed and refreshing,” as well as “vibrant and full of flavor.”

“72 and Hoppy was created with the intention to introduce new beer drinkers to the hoppy flavor profile for which San Diego is known,” said Bay City spokesperson Hana Pruzansky.

Pruzansky said Bay City Brewing Co., which is located at 3760 Hancock St., “is honored to represent the community of independent beer makers of San Diego, and hope this collaboration beer with the San Diego Tourism Authority will encourage visitors to dip into one of the most well-known beer mecca's of the U.S., helping the industry as a whole.

Comic-Con – a staple event of San Diego and one of the biggest pop culture trade shows in the world – is currently underway and as expected, there is an overwhelming amount of activity going on.

IDW started out in 1999 as an award-winning publisher of comic books, graphic novels, and trade paperbacks. Now, it has expanded into another medium, taking the forms of IDW Games, IDW Entertainment, Top Shelf Productions, and the San Diego Comic Art Gallery.

Comic-Con to stay in San Diego through 2021 Comic-Con International is staying at the San Diego Convention Center through 2021, Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced on June 30.

The popular entertainment and culture convention is San Diego's largest event each year and has called San Diego home since

1970, but its agreement to stay in San Diego was set to expire after next year's convention. Instead, Comic-Con renewed its agreement with the city for three more years.

The event typically fills about 60,000 hotel rooms and adds about $135 million to the city's economy, Faulconer said.

William (Bill) Franklin Rader Jr. Beloved William (Bill) Franklin Rader Jr. left for heaven on February 18, 2017 at age 75 in San Diego.

He is with his parents William Franklin Rader and Jessie Mabel (Roeser) Rader, younger brother Jack Wesley Rader, and first great grandson Grayson Glavin.

Bill was deeply loyal to and passionate about his family, friends, and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was a loving husband and father. Bill took great interest in people and their talents. He was especially compassionate to the elderly, children, and those less fortunate. Bill had a strong spirit and fought for what he believed was right.

Bill is survived by Linda Luffee Luther, his wife and domestic parter of 42 years, and his 5 children Kimberly Ann Walski, William Franklin Rader III, Daniel Brian Rader, Scott David Rader, and Rebecca Jane Kleist. He has 9 grandchildren.

Bill was born and raised in San Diego and graduated from San Diego High, his parents’ alma mater.

His parents were long-time residents of Point Loma.

Bill’s passion for automobiles began as a youth.

He obtained a Master Mechanic’s license in California and eventually managed his own Standard Oil service station dealership and auto repair shop on India Street in San Diego in the ‘60s. Bill moved to Tacoma, Washington in 1978 and managed his two Mobil Oil service station dealerships for several years before opening his own auto repair shops in Spanaway and Eatonville. He could sell anything and received retail sales awards from Mobil Oil and Pochel Auto Parts. From 1986-87, Bill sponsored his best friend and Nascar race car driver Steve

Car's Jars opens new shop in Point Loma

Native Obecian Carly McHenry started out with an online business manufacturing and delivering salads and other healthy meals in Mason jars.

Three years later, Car's Jars has become so successful that McHenry's planted roots in a new brickand-mortar location, 4161 Voltaire St., in a retail space that was formerly a pizzeria.

“It gives us so much more room to grow and expand,” said McHenry, a superstar with the Mason jar whose handmade, healthy, convenient and affordable layered salads are now a staple on the local culinary scene.

A graduate of Chico State with a degree in exercise physiology, McHenry was working locally with autistic children. But her homemade salads were just so good that friends enticed her to take it to the next level.

McHenry tried Tupperware first, but found that didn't last so she converted to Mason jars, which has turned out to be the perfect solution.

They're just the right size and are recyclable, which is important to the sustainability of her business.

Then she had to find a kitchen to operate out of, which she did. But after time, that, itself, became an issue.

“We were renting time from a catering kitchen in Sorrento Valley that we could only use on weekends,” McHenry said adding, “We would have to come in on Friday night at midnight, start cooking, and then package on Saturday and Sunday nights for delivery on Monday. We've grown out of that space,

and now have our own kitchen seven days a week.”

The restaurateur described her Voltaire outlet as “grab and go.”

“We're open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day,” she said, noting she has limited seating inside and out for people dining onsite. Consequently, most of her physical location's business is take out. She also does business lunches as well as plenty of catering.

Car's Jars' new space has allowed McHenry to expand her menu.

“We have about 50 different recipes we offer every Monday,” Carly said of her delivery day for clients ordering online, who often order food for the whole week.

“Right now, besides salads, we have a new homemade fajita dish that's like a burrito bowl without the tortilla. We're also doing oatmeal breakfasts and desserts.”

Noting “landlords have done everything correct,” Franco said, during the long hunt for new tenants in the prime Newport Avenue commercial space, that “We brought this deal to all types of businesses including bowling alley operators, breweries and other grocery stores such as Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, and received many offers to lease only a small portion of the space.”

Franco said it would have been too expensive to split the building up into four to six different smaller tenants.

Pointing out the landlord's intention “has always been to get someone to take over the antique center,” Franco added, “We couldn't find someone to step up to the price that we wanted. So we brought this deal to the market for sale and for lease.”

Franco noted “everything is still pending” about the deal, while adding he was not able to comment on the specifics of the Target deal.

“However, I would encourage the public to contact us if they want to either buy the building, take over the Antique Center or lease the building with a new concept,” said Franco.

Hirmez said Target has however made one commitment it intends to honor in not competing with existing Obecian small businesses.

“They have said they would not be selling alcohol in their new OB Target,” he said. Hirmez said the reconstituted Apple Tree Market has been warmly received by locals.

“People are so thankful, so happy, that they got a grocery store back in OB,” he said. “We've just been overwhelmed by the response we've gotten back from the community. It's been magnificent.”

Josh Utley views things through the prism of the Internet and social media.

These days, things are looking up.

Utley, president/CEO of Intrepid Network, a multimedia services and business solutions company, has worked with a number of clients, including Ocean Beach MainStreet Association, whose website he helped update. Utley also helped the business improvement district and its members recently develop more effective promotions and marketing through social media outreach.

The services Utley routinely provides include consulting, website design, redesign and hosting, Drupal development, programming, social network management and photography. He meets with prospective clients, identifies their goals and needs, then crafts a customized plan of action to ensure a client's company's online brand and reputation is “solid and constantly improving.”

“When my daughter has her friends over, they're all talking to each other on their phones,” he noted while pointing out, “But what we don't see is there are probably five other people in on that conversation.”

How Utley got into the multimedia services and business solutions business is an interesting tale.

“In 2009, I was checking the surf out on the OBMA website and was shocked at the (dated) website,” he said, adding he then approached the bid about redoing it, which they were already considering.

“I jumped in and made it (website) a lot better, while keeping all the same content in the beginning,” Utley said. “We redid the website two or three years ago, then gave it another overhaul, making it a little bit ahead of the curve.”

Though how much so, he added, depends on “what type of business you are, and how it (Internet) affects you.”

“It has become almost instantaneous,” noted Utley of Internet communication. “Social media is necessary for marketing and promotion for business. Social media, right now, is an opportunity to utilize an available option. People are trying to find a balance.”

Social media was likened by Utley to “one spoke on a multi-spoked (Internet) wheel.”

Are websites becoming obsolete?

Not in Utley's perspective.

“A website is a central repository for information and content,” he said pointing out that, if you rely solely on social media, “your (business) is kind of at their (customer's) mercy — not everybody sees your post.”

Foreseeing “new social media channels emerging,” Utley pointed out it's “too hard to predict in advance” what kind of an impact that will have on commerce and society.

“There's a certain number of people who will always click on ads,” Utley said.

Passengers can now have food delivered to gates at airport The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority has selected AtYourGate to provide the first airportwide passenger delivery service in the U.S. at San Diego International Airport. In partnership with mobile ordering app Grab, AtYourGate will offer passengers the ability to order food or retail items via their phone and have the items brought to them at their gate.

Passengers save time and maximize choice from the entire landscape of food and retail items available at the airport. The service is currently in development with public launch targeted for this summer.

Mobile ordering app Grab is the largest e-commerce platform in U.S. airports. The app enables timepressed travelers to pre-order restaurant and retail service items for pickup. AtYourGate will take the service one step further by delivering items to busy travelers and flight crews while they wait at their gate.

Trish Penick, owner of Cutting Edge K9 Rehab, has successfully treated pooches in pools for years in the Peninsula. Now she needs a new venue to do the work she does best: helping restore injured canines to health utilizing the weightlessness of water.

“We are losing our Point Loma pool in a few weeks and are desperately looking for a new local pool,” said Penick. “We are sending word out through social media and some other avenues.”

Penick, who received her physical therapy degree to treat humans in 1988, has since crossed species to focus her practice on dogs. She is now considered one of the leading experts in swimming and rehab for canines.

For years, Penick has been leasing space in private pools in Point Loma, but must move on from her present therapy site.

“We are looking for a lap pool ideally 20-feet by 40-feet, and 6 feet in the deep end,” Penick said of her ideal replacement pool. “It would be good if it did not have a lot of stairs, because a lot of our dogs can't walk.”

Penick said she needs pool space just a couple days a week for a total of six to eight hours.

The animal therapist talked about the physical benefits of rehabbing canines in pools. “[The water is] non-weight bearing,” Penick said, noting the most

common physical ailment the dogs she treats involves bad hips or elbows. “Water takes away all the impact, takes away the pain, helping the dogs build their muscles back because they're not experiencing pain. On land, that pain, that inflammation, makes muscles shut

off and atrophy.”

Conditions including disc herniation, hip and elbow dysplasia, arthritis and obesity can be alleviated by swimming.

One satisfied Penick client, retired Point Loma chiropractor Dr. Robert Tortora, swears by the quality of her

care. He said his shih tzu-poodle mix Bailey has made substantially more progress with Penick's water therapy than he would have otherwise following surgery to repair his spine, which was impairing his ability to walk.

Tortora was impressed by Penick's treatment methodology.

“She put him on an exercise ball and rocked it back and forth to make Bailey work the muscles of his back legs,” he said. “Then she puts him in a lifejacket and has him swim for about 20 minutes. It's a workout.”

Totora took Bailey for water therapy with Penick twice a week for five weeks, and is now down to once a week. He added the results have been impressive.

“Bailey was 50 percent improved after his surgery, and now I would say he's about 90 percent improved,” Tortora said. “I started out with five-minute walks with him, and now I'm up to about 30 minutes.”

Would Tortora recommend Penick's physical therapy services?

“Without a doubt,” he answered, unequivocally.

Point Loma native Theresa McLaughlin has released a new book, “A Double Dose of Hard Luck; The Extraordinary True Story of a Two-time Prisoner of War Lt. Col. Charles Lee Harrison,” written with fellow author Leo Aime LaBrie.

This poignant biography depicts the heroism of Charlie Harrison, a decorated war veteran and two-time prisoner of war. Lt. Col. (ret.) Harrison was one of the few men in American history to endure life as a POW twice. Harrison’s legacy is replete with determination, courage, and the will to survive. Faith, love of country and family sustain this hero through his bleakest, darkest and most painful moments.

Harrison served over three decades as a Marine during America’s most pivotal conflicts – World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War. Harrison was first held captive

by Chinese Reds as a result of the battle at the Chosin Reservoir. The then sergeant spent six months in captivity before he escaped.

During World War II, Harrison was held as a prisoner of war by the Japanese for three-and-a-half years.

Harrison’s plight was to say the least, brutal. Nevertheless, Harrison remained a pillar of strength.

Harrison shares in an interview, “No person who would have ever known me well, especially (Harrison’s wife) Mary, would expect to find me bitter and disillusioned from

my double dose of hard luck. I thought of many others, however, who as casual observers or acquaintances would probably expect to see a very dejected and spiritually broken Marine arrive home this second time. If only they could know how to appreciate America and ‘things American’ as I do.”

Harrison noted that he felt like he had become a “professional” POW. Undaunted, Harrison continued his tenure as a Marine and experienced Vietnam first-hand – serving valiantly – before completing his final tour of duty at a Marine Barracks in Fallbrook.

Gen. James L. Jones, former U.S. Marine Corps commandant, wrote a letter to Harrison, (featured in “A Double Dose of Hard Luck”) on Dec. 13, 2001, that reads: “The tremendous courage with

In the email, the psychiatrist reported he evaluated Guerrero in jail recently and determined he was not mentally competent. The email message was discussed by Smyth and the attorneys in open court.

The ruling about suspending criminal proceedings was opposed

by Deputy District Attorney Makenzie Harvey because she noted it was only an email message and not a full psychiatric report.

Guerrero’s attorney, Dan Tandon, asked for the full hearing. “Jon Guerrero undoubtedly suffers from severe mental illness,” he said afterwards.

“Its clear he has suffered from mental illness for many, many years,” said Tandon, who added the key to understanding “what happened and why” is to understand the underlying mental illness.

The ruling is a blow to the prosecution as Mackenzie wanted to present witnesses in a four-day preliminary hearing that is now put off indefinitely.

Railroad spikes were plunged into the bodies of three of the murder victims and other survivors. The identification of two victims was found in Guerrero’s apartment after he was arrested on July 15, 2016.

The first homicide victim was Angelo DeNardo, 53, who was attacked where he was sleeping under the Interstate 5 bridge near Mission Bay on July 3, 2016. His body was set on fire after he died.

Shawn Longley, 41, died in Ocean Beach where he was sleeping on July 4, 2016. Another man was attacked in the Midway District after a railroad spike was driven into his sinus cavity and he survived, but was left blind.

The third murder victim was Dionicio Vahidy, 23, who was found dead on July 6, 2016, downtown. A fourth murder victim was Molly Simons, 83, who was walking to a bus stop in North Park on July 13, 2016 when she suffered a skull fracture. Simons is the only female victim.

Guerrero was found to be mentally incompetent in Oct. 2016, and sent to Patton State Hospital. With medication, Guerrero was found to be mentally competent in March and returned here.

He previously has pleaded not guilty. He is also charged with special circumstance allegations that allege multiple victims were killed.

Pacific Records in Midway successfully signs local and national talent

-When it comes to music, writing and recording the songs is the easy part. Getting music distributed, and placed in stores, now that’s the hard part. While the digital revolution has certainly made the creation of music much easier, the need for labels to help artists reach the next level has never been greater. San Diego has several respected imprints locally, including Surfdog, Swami and 31G, but none has made quite the local splash of Pacific Records.

Housed in the Rock ’n’ Roll San Diego music complex, adjacent to the Valley View Casino Center, Pacific Records has released albums by a legion of local and national talent, including hard rockers Sprung Monkey, soul singer Rebecca Jade, rap combo The Kneehighs and singersongwriter Ryan Hiller.

The label’s most recent signing is platinum-selling boy band, O-Town, who will perform locally at the Music Box on Aug. 10. “We’re so excited about this signing,” said Pacific Records CEO Brian Witkin. “I love the music of that era and there is a whole revival of it going on right now, in fact they will be doing shows with the Backstreet Boys soon.”

Though Pacific Records is an indie label, they find themselves approached by new talent on an almost hourly basis. “I couldn’t begin to count the submissions we get,” Witkin said good naturedly. “At first I figured we’d end up receiving

Luckily, we have had various small successes that help pay the bills, whether it’s radio airplay or music placement in a film or TV program.

Even beyond that, it’s a great room to play with great sound and sightlines. It’s almost a bonus that there is an audience there,” he laughed.

Two of the label’s biggest success stories in the past year are Ryan Hiller, who scored a No. 12 placing on the i-Tunes blues chart with his latest album, “Big Medicine,” while The Kneehighs took home the award for “Best Hip Hop or Rap Album,” at the 2017 San Diego Music Awards, for their disc, “We Put the Fun in Dysfunction.”

“We have high hopes for all our releases,” Witkin noted.

Trial set for driver who crashed on Sunset Cliffs Blvd.

An Aug. 25 trial date has been set for the alleged drunk driver who crashed into a palm tree in Sunset Cliffs, injuring his three children.

Noel Bences, 28, was ordered to stand trial on three counts of child endangerment and drunk driving with injury in the May 12 incident

in which his car overturned after striking the tree at 1100 Sunset Cliffs Blvd. at 8:30 p.m.

He was also accused of driving a measurable amount of alcohol over the legal limit.

Police officers found empty bottles of alcohol in the car. San Diego Superior Court Judge Laura Halgren ordered him held to answer

on all five charges in a preliminary hearing in which two police officers testified.

Bences has pleaded not guilty. He remains free on $100,000 bond under condition that he wear a Scram device that determines if he ingests alcohol. He is also banned from driving with children as passengers, according to court records.
