Construction to start in July to replace ‘critical’ West Mission Bay Drive bridge BY ANDREW EAKES & GILLIAN WEINSTEIN THE BEACON

San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, along with District 2 Councilmember Lorie Zapf and Public Works director James Nagelvoort, announced on May 30 that construction to replace the West Mission Bay Drive bridge will start in July. “It has served us well, but like much of the infrastructure in San Diego, the time for it to be improved and modernized is long past due,” Faulconer said at a press conference near the foot of the old bridge. This $110 million project will replace the current four-lane bridge, built in the 1950s, with two separate three-lane structures. The bridge was recently classified as “fracture critical” by the California Department of Transportation. “This bridge is supported by timber piles, something you don’t want to be driving over in the event of a major earthquake,” Faulconer said. The new structures are to be built on either side of the existing bridge, meaning traffic will go uninterrupted for the duration of construction. A temporary bridge will be used on

the northbound side to store construction equipment. Once the northbound side is completed, residents and tourists can expect the same procedure for the southbound side. Once completed, these two parallel bridges will provide not only three driving lanes on each side, but also a protected Class-1 bike path on both sides and improvements to Sports Arena Boulevard, West Mission Bay Drive and the westbound I-8 off-ramp. All of this comes as a part of Faulconer’s “Proposed Fiscal Year 2019” budget of $633 million in one year, making it the largest infrastructure investment in San Diego’s history. The people driving, or biking, won’t be the only ones to benefit from the new bridge, but the environment will as well. Zapf noted that the area below the bridge is a 12-

acre, sensitive habitat that needs improvement. “What will happen is that invasive plants will be removed, and it will be revegetated with native species, which will lead to a better ecosystem and better water quality,” Zapf said. Nagelvoort estimated that this project, being as large as it is, will be completed by 2022, making it an approximately three-and-a-half-year project. “When this is done, this bridge is going to be seismically sound, have a much longer life span, and be able to hold up to earthquake activity much better than the current bridge,” Nagelvoort said. Parents of a musician killed by falling tree in Pacific Beach recently reached a settlement with City. City of San Diego attorneys have reportedly reached a $700,000 settlement with the parents of a local musician and dance instructor killed when a tree fell on her car during a storm in Pacific Beach two years ago. Nicki Lyn Carano, 48, was crushed when an uprooted tree eight feet in diameter fell across Ingraham Street near Fortuna Avenue in blustery conditions on Jan. 31, 2016, according to city fire officials and the county medical examiner’s office. The tree, 100 years old and 50 feet tall, crushed three parked, unoccupied vehicles and Carano’s small sedan as she drove by. Carano, who played in the allfemale band Nectarine, died on her way to Ocean Beach to perform with her band Spider Tree. According to published reports, Carano’s parents, Anthony and Carole Ann Carano, filed a wrongful

death lawsuit in 2016. The suit alleged that City officials had “actual and/or constructive knowledge” that there was a defect in the tree. It also claimed that the City had a duty to inspect trees near the roadway for flaws and contended the City failed in its duties to keep the area safe and to warn of any hidden danger. San Diego County and the state of California were also named in the lawsuit. City Council reportedly will be asked to approve the settlement at its Tuesday, May 22 meeting. According to her Facebook page, Carano was from Tucson and attended Clairemont High School in San Diego. She taught dance, drums and musical theater for more than 15 years at numerous local campuses, including the Academy of Performing Arts San Diego, Mesa Community College, UC San Diego and Coronado School of the Arts. A dance scholarship was established in her name at Mesa Community College.

Area student named SDSCPA valedictorian A Peninsula-area student has been named valedictorian at a local high school magnet program. Julian Roel, a former PLHS student, transferred to the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SDSCPA) for his senior year and has been named to lead his class in upcoming commencement ceremonies. SDSCPA is a magnet school in southeast San Diego providing preprofessional training in the arts

requiring prospective students to audition before selecting one of six offered programs. An accomplished saxophone player, Roel is a lifelong Point Loma resident who attended Sunset View Elementary, Dana and Correia Middle schools before three years at PLHS. His parents are Hope and Alex Roel. Roel plans to attend The New School of New York City in the fall. --Scott Hopkins

Ludwig Fred1930-2018 Fred Ludwig, ‘Coach Ludwig’, passed away peacefully on April 15th, 2018. Fred was known and loved throughout the Point Loma community where he lived for over seven decades. Known for his warmth, counsel, generosity and humor, Frederick E. Ludwig was born on October 3, 1930 in Little Rock Arkansas, arriving in San Diego in 1935. He served in Korea, finishing the reserves as First Lieutenant. Upon his return to San Diego State, he fell quickly in love with his beloved Joanna who he married in 1955. He graduated in 1957 from UCLA enjoying his years on the soccer team. Fred was a devoted family man, a father of four, a devout Christian who loved teaching and coaching in San Diego for twenty seven years; twelve at Point Loma High School, which were highlights personally and professionally. He was predeceased by Joanna,

his wife of sixty-one years in 2016 and daughter-in-law Paula Flanagan Ludwig in 2013. He is survived by his children Rick Ludwig, Lanna (Henry) Cramer, Janelle (David) Helms and Alisa Ludwig (Kathy Braegger), seven adoring grandchildren; five greatgrandchildren, brother Bill Ludwig and many nieces and nephews.

Point Loma High students create PSA to help keep schools’ safe BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON

On June 4, Point Loma High School students unveiled a studentproduced public service announcement on gun violence and school security titled, “If You See Something, Say Something,” to be aired publicly throughout June. The PSA announcement came just three days after a threatening message scrawled on a PLHS bathroom stall prompted extra security at the school and an investigation by San Diego Unified School District police. The PSA campaign will target all of San Diego County with two 30second PSAs by PLHS and San Diego High School teacher Kyle Williams’ film class students Buster Underwood, David Castellon and Yasmin Diaz. Both PSAs, produced in English and Spanish, will run on television and online. Cox Communications has partnered with the students and SDUSD and will air each PSA 200 times during June. Prior to the June 4 PSA screenings, Sgt. Carlos Vargas of SDUSD Police said the district approached both high schools about doing the PSAs because “We wanted to be able to collaborate with students and give them an opportunity to have a voice, and extend that in the nationwide movement we’re seeing creating

another layer of protection by creating these PSAs.” Concerning the recent PLHS threat, Vargas noted: “It was writing on the wall that was very vague. But we always have to do everything we can to make sure the campus is safe. We definitely want to let the kids know we’re going to take every threat seriously.” Vargas said students making threats is a serious matter. He added students can be prosecuted for anything from a misdemeanor to a felony depending on the circumstances.

Discussing what can be done to make schools safer, Tiger said, “Maybe have more than just one cop at the school for security. We created this video hoping to make an impact on how people view suspicious activity.” Asked why school shootings are becoming more frequent, Torres said, “Because nothing has really been done about it.” Torres pointed out PSAs could also lend themselves to addressing other school problems, like student depression, suicide and pollution.

Following the PSA screenings, SDUSD Police chief Mike Marquez, said: “By providing support to our school communities, we help to create a safer learning environment for students and faculty. I’m calling on the greater San Diego community to join us in this campaign that, if you see something, we want you to say something. We want people to report suspicious activity and, certainly, criminal activity.” “I’m very proud of the [student] work that has been done,” said PLHS principal Hans Becker.

A day dreaded by thousands of its patrons has finally arrived as Nati's Mexican Restaurant will close its doors for the final time the evening of Thursday, June 7. Owners Marilyn Thomas and Dennis Kerr made the announcement on the afternoon of June 2 when it was learned escrow closed on the sale of the property to as-yetunnamed new owners. The reaction was immediate between both employees and customers, many of whom hugged each other upon hearing the news, according to manager Anna Boone, who was working when the news came. Thomas and Kerr released a letter to customers the same afternoon that was posted on Facebook and has drawn dozens of reactions including numerous "shares" and comments. "With the closing of the restaurant rapidly approaching we reflect back over the many years that we have been a part of the Ocean Beach community," the letter began. "During that time we have met so many wonderful people--our customers-- that we consider 'family.' The loyalty to Nati’s from the Ocean Beach community over the past 58 years has been amazing and so much appreciated." Boone said it is not unusual to see

families covering four generations enjoying the tastes that have attracted return customers, many of whom have been Nati's regulars since the then one-room eatery first opened its doors on Jan. 10, 1960. Originally, Nati's was owned by Vern and Charline Lontz who weren't sure if Mexican food would

be a hit in Ocean Beach. But within two years, the couple added a second dining room to accommodate a growing clientele. About that time Kerr began working as a dishwasher at the restaurant while a 16-year-old Point Loma High student. Thomas began in 1969 as a hostess. When the

Moment Bicycles, the innovator and sponsor of the San Diego Triathlon Classic, is gearing up for the 10th annual event on Sept. 8. Founded in May 2007, Moment Bicycles, which since has expanded from Rosecrans Street into Liberty Station, formed Moment Sporting Events in 2009 to stage high-quality triathlon and other countywide roadracing events. “We have Olympic- and Sprint-distance options for the race,” said J.T. Lyons, owner of Moment Bicycles, which is the official training, maintenance and rental supplier to athletes participating in the race. E n g i n e e r- t u r n e d - cyc l i n g entrepreneur, Lyons, operator of the all-purpose bike shop at 2816 Historic Decatur Road, Suite 135, said the Tri Classic Olympic distance involves a 1,500-meter swim, 25-

mile bike, and a 10K run. The sprint is a 750-meter swim, 17-mile bike and 5k run. Lyons said there are as many as 1,000 competitors in Tri Classic who are sent off in “waves” according to age and gender. The cycling entrepreneur said the classic is a fun, local event promoting health and fitness. He added that adults afterward can sample local craft brews and pizza in the beer/mimosa oasis. Lyons said one thing not many people know is that triathlon is a homegrown sport. “Triathlon was invented here in San Diego — San Diego started the sport,” Lyons said. The first modern swim/bike/run event to be called a triathlon was held at Mission Bay on Sept. 25, 1974. The race was conceived and directed by Jack Johnstone and Don Shanahan, members of the San Diego Track Club, which sponsored it.

Lyons started the Tri Classic a decade ago because “there were no Olympic triathlons in San Diego, though we had a bunch of triathlons, we wanted something a little bit better. A little more scenic. Sale of the restaurant was announced months ago and originally included a supposed commitment from the buyers to remodel Nati's and re-open with the same recipes and employees. That, apparently, is not true although the recipes were included in the sale. Since then, speculation has included a different restaurant serving a selection of hot meat and vegetable pies. Recent comments suggest the entire property, which includes the adjacent shops, parking lot and building to the west will become apartments or condominiums. Coastal apartment building sold in OB A 16-unit apartment building on the coastline of Ocean Beach has sold significantly over the asking price for $6.75 million. The 12,140-square-foot property, located at 5101-5107 Narragansett Ave., was sold by the William R. Mundt Trust. The seller was represented by Pacific Coast Commercials multifamily and investment sales team, Mack Langston and Jan Sacks. The buyer, Mills Trust, was represented by Kidder Mathews multifamily investment brokers, Merrick Matricardi, Jim Neil and Eric Comer, as well as Dylan Wright

and Chris Saver of ACRE. The apartment was built in 1973. It is a three-story building consisting of 16 units of studios, one-, two- and three-bedroom floor plans. Lufthansa offers nonstop service from San Diego to Frankfurt The Lufthansa Group has expanded its network in California, opening its third and fourth official gateways in the Golden State. Lufthansa is flying an Airbus A340-300, flight LH467, from San Diego International Airport to Frankfurt, Germany. Flight LH467 departs from San Diego at 3:05 p.m. and arrives in Frankfurt at 11:20 a.m. local time on the following day. The return flight, LH466, departs from Frankfurt at 10 a.m. and arrives in San Diego at 1:20 p.m. local

Davey Folsom wrapped up a highly successful prep career with a trip to the state track and field championships in Clovis last weekend. Folsom recently won the Div. II championships in the shot put with a toss of 55 feet, 10 inches. “This is my third time winning CIF," Folsom said. "It’s been the best three years of high school sports. It’s an accomplishment. At state, I’ll have more opportunity to prove myself.” Standing 6 foot 4 inches tall and weighing 315 pounds, Folsom has received several Div. I college offers and plans to continue playing.

First, winning a league championship with a three-game sweep of La Jolla, and then losing a CIF Div. II play-in game just six days later. Going into the playoffs, the Pointers (15-13 overall, 8-4 in Eastern League) were seeded No. 9 and Brawley's Wildcats were pegged at No. 8. But since the Pointers were league champions, they were spared the long drive to the Imperial Valley and Brawley came west for the May 22 game at David Wells Field. The Wildcats, who finished 10-2 for second place in the Imperial Valley League (15-11 overall) seemed tired from their trek to the coast as senior Pointer starting pitcher Mitchell Sardo threw shutout baseball for eight innings, which included the regulation seven-inning game plus one extra inning, before he reached the 110-pitch limit imposed

very now and then our perceptions of reality are tested, and the mythical world becomes actualized. Each time this happens, the little child within us breaks free from adult confinements, and we begin to see the world differently. This is the exact phenomenon going on right now in Point Loma with the emergence of a mermaid. We are calling her “Mishell,” meaning “God-like,” for her beauty and mystical powers have navigated people to her throne atop Ross Rock off the coast of Sunset Cliffs since Memorial Day weekend. Is it coincidence that May gray vanished at the mere glance of her green tail and flowing locks? We think not. Maybe it is her siren songs soothing the souls of visitors, or her aweinspiring capacity to bring consistently firing waves, but the vibe around the cliffs has been both peaceful and joyous. “I think [she] is a piece of art. [She] definitely fits the OB vibe. I just want to know how [she] got up there,” said Greg Clinnin, a Pacific Beach resident. Visitors fear for her future. Mark Eimer, a San Diego resident, said, “I think the City will eventually take it down, but they should leave it up for a little to let people enjoy [her].” “It’s great for tourism and [she] is art. We have lived here for 32 years and have never been to the cliffs, but talk of this mermaid drew us in,” Randy Sundberg said. “To people who want to take [her] down or feel this is vandalism, I say live a little.” The Peninsula Beacon was able to confirm with park rangers that

there are no plans to take Mishell down, and we couldn’t be more relieved. While mermaids are known for their beauty and enchantment, it comes in the form of vanity, and any test at their ego is detrimental to both people and their environment. Among many powers, mermaids can manipulate both the ocean and weather to either our benefit or detriment. Urban legend tells the terrifying tales of entire ships lost at sea to the goddesses. They also possess telepathy with marine life, giving them a plethora of back-up if needed. One shouldn’t worry too much though, as the true nature of mermaids are both loving and curious. While we don’t know the exact reason for Mishell’s sudden appearance, she may be attempting to learn about us as much as we are understanding her. “I think this is a political state-

ment,” said Roger Warren, of Point Loma. “Is it just a coincidence that Starbucks, whose mascot is a green mermaid, is having racial sensitivity training the same day [she] goes up? I don’t think so.” We do not think that Mishell has any political affiliations or influence, but she may be trying to transcend our psyches. “I wouldn’t call it art. I wouldn’t call it vandalism. I think that someone was just trying to bring some joy to the world,” said Lucie Leonard, a Point Loma resident. Leonard was lucky enough to spot Mishell scaling the side of the 50foot rock with assistance from her “servants” around 4:45 p.m. on Memorial Day. She said one of the men must have free-climbed the side and dropped a rope ladder for her highness to reach her seat. Leonard snapped three photos of this remarkable conclave.

Mishell isn’t the first to perch aloft the notorious rock. In 2010, the numbers “2010” stood proud. Before that, in 2006, a peace sign was put up, only to be stolen and returned to the roof of the OB Hostel on Newport Avenue. Other royalty to grace the top of the formation includes a pterodactyl, an Easter Island head replica, a Christmas tree, and a toilet with a Raiders fan wedged inside. Whoever was brave enough to assist Mishell on her conquest remains unknown, and their identities are as mysterious as she is magical. Rumors continue to spread including the idea that a group of tourists from Arizona not only helped Mishell, but the others as well, but the Peninsula Beacon was not able to confirm. Other thoughts include those similar to Gary Wasserman’s, who said on the Point Loma Connections Facebook page, “It is like a secret artist or society of artful people that have installed these sculptures both very large and small on top of this rock over many years, that is otherwise unclimbable.” However Mishell got there, she remains, to kick off the summer and bring us closer to her home she holds so dearly, the ocean. With the potential of her departure any day at any time, take some time out of your day to witness her in all her glory.

Though guitarist Anna Troy is now a New York college student, with studies in piano and classical compositions and a bright future in music, as a young San Diegan she already had an accomplished career. Beginning in the early 2000s, she became a mainstay of the local club and coffeehouse circuit and embarked on a music career that has included recording alongside her sister Lyndsey in a rock duo, The Troys, for a major label in 2003, and working with a slew of notable musicians, including Cindy Lee Berryhill and Roger Joseph Manning. She then went on to a solo career that showcased her skills as a blues guitarist and saw her release numerous EPs and albums between 2005 and 2008. Troy returns to San Diego on June 10 for a rare performance at Java Joe’s. The night will also include blues legend, Robin Henkel. It’s a special pairing. The three-time San Diego Music Awards winner has mentored Troy for more than a decade. “Robin has been very important to my music career and to my personal growth as well,” Troy said. “Not only has he taught me a lot about music, he continues to mentor me long distance. My first year at Columbia, when I was having a

hard time adjusting, Robin would sometimes speak to me on the phone every day and give me love and support,” she remarked. The pair will play solo sets as well as perform a few tunes together. “I will definitely play many of my old favorites as well as some jazz songs I’ve been working on, including one by Billie Holiday, where Robin will play guitar and I’ll sing,” Troy said. She moved to New York in 2009 to attend Columbia University, where she is an undergraduate in their School of General Studies. While she is still heavily immersed in music through school, she rarely performs live. “I have played music in different ways in New York,” she said. “I’m a music major and I study classical music theory, which has given me

an opportunity to learn so much about music that I couldn’t learn as a rock musician. However, I don’t play many gigs at the moment because I am constantly studying, practicing piano for school, and analyzing classical music scores.” Having spent nearly a decade in New York, she’s clear on the two things she misses most about San Diego. “The supportive music scene and the beach,” she mused. “I don’t find the New York City music scene to be as supportive and close knit as San Diego. “However, I do feel, like for jazz, there’s no better place to be. I’ve heard there is quite a scene here for jazz that includes multiple all-night jazz jams. I would like to explore jazz more in the future and it’s part of why I chose to learn classical music theory.” Sunday’s rare performance is down to being back in town for a few days to visit family. “I don’t have any musical projects in the works because I am solely focused on finishing my bachelor’s degree,” she said. “After I graduate, I hope to start playing shows, writing more songs, and maybe even get a band together again.”

With expanded dock space for more in-the-water exhibits, the annual summer San Diego International Boat Show will exhibit about 175 boats, plus 100 vendors will offer boating-related merchandise during this year's annual show, held June 7-10. The show splashes into the water near the Sheraton Harbor Island Hotel and Marina, with land-based exhibits located in the adjacent Spanish Landing Park, East, on Thursday, June 7, continuing through, Sunday, June 10. Show hours are noon to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. With offerings ranging from family-oriented 30-foot boats to 115-foot superyachts, expect to see expanded displays of both new and brokerage sail and power yachts from major yacht dealers. The show offers the West Coast debuts of many new boat models. San Diego's South Coast Yachts, which represents Bénéteau Yachts' sail and power lines, Lagoon Catamarans, Four Winns and Wellcraft, will again have the largest display of both new and previously-owned yachts.

On May 5, 1918, 13 lives were lost in Ocean Beach, including 11 soldiers and sailors – but more than 60 people were saved – from rip currents in one of the most tragic incidents ever in San Diego lifeguarding history. A century later, on May 23 at Ocean Beach Lifeguard Station, a public ceremony and book dedication memorialized the 1918 Ocean Beach drowning, paying tribute to lifeguards past and present. MC’d by Byron Wear, former lifeguard and council member, the event included a host of speakers and political dignitaries. Michael T. Martino, author of “Help! San Diego Lifeguards to the Rescue” (Volume 1) 1868-1941, was saluted for his participation in the Lifeguard History Project of the San Diego Lifesav-

ing Association. With a band providing musical accompaniment, Martino was joined by a host of lifeguards, Mayor Kevin Faulconer and District 2 Councilmember Lorie Zapf reflecting on the critical role first responders play in safeguarding San Diego’s coastal lifestyle. Noting “it’s nice to recognize the past,” interim San Diego Lifeguard Chief James Gartland, said, “The job hasn’t changed too much: You have to watch the water, run, swim hard and help people.” What has changed over the years, pointed out Gartland, “are some of the tools. We now operate a machine that helps keep people alive. Every vehicle, vessel and tower has a machine that we can use to revive a heart at the push of a button.” “Today the community and the

City remember the contributions of the San Diego Lifeguard Service and a one-of-a-kind book which took countless hours of research,” said Zapf, praising Faulconer for including $250,000 in the current city budget for design for a new lifeguard tower to replace OB’s aging facility. “The reason I’m here today is to share with you the admiration I have for San Diego Lifeguards,” said Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina, a former lifeguard, before introducing Martino.
