National Bike to Work Day is Friday, May 15, and in Point Loma there are three pit stops on the way to work for cyclists and two on the way home from work. Originated by the League of American Bicyclists in 1956, Bike to Work Day is a part of Bike-toWork Week, which is in turn part of National Bike Month. The annual event, held during spring across the United States and Canada, promotes the bicycle as an option for commuting to work. On May 15, Mixte Communications, at 4827 Voltaire St., will be a morning pit stop from 6 to 9 a.m. “We'll have games, prizes and food provided by The Wine Pub,” said Mixte CEO Jamie Hampton, noting the bike train from Mixte to downtown will begin at 7:45 a.m. Hampton said Mixte’s ride will be at a casual pace and is meant for those biking to work for the first time to get them comfortable on
their bikes. Later, a Bike from Work Day event will be at The Wine Pub, at 2907 Shelter Island Drive, from 5 to 8 p.m. Bikers will be greeted with an extended happy hour and high-fives. Leading up to Bike to Work Day, national, regional and local bicycle
advocacy groups, like the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, have been promoting the special day extolling its significance. “The day gives people awareness and education on alternative SEE BIKE, Page 4

Like just any other day, brothers Louie and Virgil Paulerio arrived at their Rosecrans Street barber shop and unlocked the glass door for customers at 8 a.m., as they have done six days a week since 1960. On this day, they noticed an envelope had been shoved under the door overnight. Opening it, 86-year-old Louis and 82-year-old Virgil were stunned to read a letter telling them their lease would no longer be renewed, directing them to vacate the

The courts have ordered the owner of a “perpetual remodel” on Plum Street in Point Loma to resume work on his half-finished mansion, setting target dates for him to complete work and also make needed public improvements, like sidewalk replacement. After years of inaction, Point Lomans are hopeful the city will now finally hold property owner Francisco Mendiola’s feet to the fire. They expect the city to ensure the property owner will meet his court-ordered deadlines and finish his abandoned remodel at the corner of 1676 Plum St. and Lowell. Local reaction to the latest developments on Plum Street have been guarded. “We understand the legal constraints the city has,” said neighbor Jerry Lohla, who’s
