Group urges City to stop using chemical herbicides, change to organic products

t all began this February when Anne Jackson Hefti and friend Amy Ryan were walking their dogs in Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, and claim they were exposed to wind-drift toxic herbicide sprayed by workers there.

“They were spraying in front of us and behind us and there were ‘No’ signs posted, and the area was not taped off to keep us off the trail,” said Jackson Hefti, adding Ryan “asked the contractors to stop spraying until we left the area.”

They did not.

The incident motivated them to set out on a quest, which they’re calling “Campaign Non Toxic San Diego.” The pair are now lobbying the City and County of San Diego to adapt an integrative pest management strategy, similar to one in Irvine, Calif., which replaces commonly used herbicides and pesticides containing cancerlinked glyphosate with other, safer organic products.

Discovered in 1970 by Monsanto chemist John E. Franz, glyphosate is an herbicide used to kill weeds that inhibits plant enzymes. Monsanto brought it to market for agricultural use in 1974 under the trade name Roundup.

Noting her 10-year-old dog is now ill with a tumor, Jackson Hefti acknowledged it’s uncertain whether her pet’s illness is connected or not with the alleged her-

bicide contamination. Nonetheless, she added her research has shown, “There is a lot nastier stuff then glyphosate out there.”

Hence, her campaign has morphed into “Campaign Non Toxic San Diego,” embracing the policies Irvine has already enacted dealing with potentially dangerous herbicide chemicals.

“I created a new petition change.org/p/kevinfaulconersandiego-gov-non-toxic-san-diegocampaign," said Jackson Hefti. As of

May 6, more than 240 people had signed the non-toxic petition, whose goal is to secure 500 signatures.

Habitat West is the licensed pest control operator contracting with the City to do work in Sunset Cliffs Natural Park. The scope of work, at an estimated $1.7 million cost during 260 working days, is to include: improvements to 1.82 miles of pedestrian trails and observation points; installation of a pedestrian bridge; recontouring of an existing baseball field: and

removal of nonnative plants and trees in implementing a 51-acre park revegetation program.

“The project has a biologist specifically overseeing this work and the application of the herbicide to ensure that it’s being applied per the contract requirements,” said City spokesperson Alec Phillipp. “As part of these requirements, crews have maintained storm water pollution measures that prevent water runoff and spray drift from leaving the site.

“All of the work is being done in accordance with, and guided by, the Sunset Cliffs Natural Park Master Plan, which does not specify that herbicides should not be used in the removal of invasive species throughout the park,” Phillipp said.

Phillipp said herbicide use is expected to decrease throughout the five-year maintenance and monitoring period as the native plants are able to grow and natu-

rally compete on their own.

“It appears that the initial herbicide application at the site has been successful in controlling this winter’s crop of annual weeds and therefore subsequent applications in this phase will be substantially reduced and limited to spot treatments,” added Phillipp.

Jackson Hefti noted their antitoxicity campaign originally started out just to “ban glyphosate from Sunset Cliffs Natural Park.” She has shared that on social media sites, as well as passing out flyers at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, OB Dog beach and in local surf and coffee shops. She’s also gone viral with video footage she and Ryan took that day of herbicide spraying going on at Sunset Cliffs.

“What started as a small grassroots team of people in District 2 has expanded to include people from all over Southern California,” added Jackson Hefti, noting their cause enjoys support from Sierra Clubs, a Salk Institute professor, The Xerces Society, local beekeepers and the Surfrider Foundation.

Jackson Hefti has also provided Mayor Kevin Faulconer and the City Council with five integrated pest management policies from other cities including cost analysis.

“So much of what we do in San Diego is outdoors with our children, grandchildren and fur babies,” said Jackson Hefti. “We want green natural fields to play on with our families, not toxic fields.”

Changing of the guard at San Diego Lifeguard Union

here’s been a change at the top in San Diego Lifeguard Union Teamsters 911 with Chris Vanos replacing Ed Harris as head steward.

“After 10 years I have passed the torch in preparation for my retirement in 14 months,” said Harris. “Chris Vanos is a talented Lifeguard II who will serve the lifeguards well.”

Last year, the lifeguard's union voted 76 in favor, 18 opposed, to leave the San Diego Fire Rescue Department. A turf battle has ensued over how duties are being apportioned among lifeguards and firefighters, with some lifeguards claiming that rerouting communication calls through fire has slowed emergency response.

Vanos noted there’s subsequently been fallout from the proposed separation of the two departments. “It was seen that if you supported the lifeguard union you were on a ‘black list’ for promotional opportunities,” he said.

Vanos said personnel shortages are among guard’s most pressing needs, which he said includes filling positions for the BSU/Mission Bay harbor patrol, and at Children’s Pool and La Jolla Shores.

“Boating safety positions are needed both for winter and summer due to the impact of tourism and recreational boaters on Mission Bay,” Vanos said. “The Children’s Pool positions are based on the needs for officer safety during rescue calls, enforcement issues both on the rocks and at La Jolla Shores, to better protect the public.”

Concerning health coverage, Vanos said

lifeguards are seeking “to have the same coverage as both SD Fire and SDPD do for heart and cancer. We all perform duties that fall under law enforcement and fire suppression, yet lifeguards do not receive coverage for cancer- and heart- related health issues.”

What are the issues in improving the lifeguard department?

“One of the largest issues is that our lifeguard chief answers to both the fire chief and his assistant,” said Vanos. “He/she is not in a role to advocate for lifeguard needs directly to City Council or the mayor. If the LGC was able to advocate for lifeguard needs, we would be able to fix a lot of issues that have come up. We have made the case, both to lifeguard and fire chiefs, for why lifeguards should be dispatching river- and water-rescue calls.

“Though we understand the SDFD has its roles and responsibilities the question is, when you have one of the best swift water

rescue teams in the nation, why send a firefighter instead of a water specialist?”

What are the challenges confronting today’s lifeguards?

“The current challenges we have are similar to the issues of SDPD and SDFD,” replied Vanos. “The city is in a wave of retirement.

The institutional knowledge is being lost as some of our most senior guards are walking out the door. The front-line lifeguards and firefighter’s who work hand-in-hand on calls have no issues. The issues arise in upper management because the lifeguard chief answers to the fire chief, which creates road blocks.”

Any new developments with equipment/infrastructure?

This summer South Mission Beach will have a new main lifeguard station in the works after having been held up in the courts,” said Vanos. “It is set to open prior to Memorial Day. The lifeguard service is also working on plans for North Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach to receive new main stations. We hope to have these completed very soon to provide the utmost safety for beach goers in those areas.”

Discussing his decade-long tenure as lifeguard union steward, Harris noted: “We successfully got state law changed to cover permanent guards for work-related injury and diseases. We’ve made more progress on working conditions, pay and equipment than was made in the previous 40 years.”

Of retiring, Harris said he’ll be doing “a lot of free diving and gardening. My passions are my family and traveling to all ends of the Earth with no more than a backpack, fins and a mask.”

Glass bong attacker released from jail

A

Point Loma woman who shattered a glass bong on an acquaintance’s body was ordered on May 7 to be released from jail with credit for time served.

Layla Maria Lugo, 25, accepted terms of three years probation from San Diego Superior Court Judge Laura Halgren. Her attorney said Lugo wants to return to Pennsylvania where she is from.

Lugo received jail credits of 177 days including time off for good behavior in the Feb. 8 incident in a Point Loma house near Liberty Station.

Deputy District Attorney Allen Brown said the victim, a 30-year-old man, suffered serious injuries when the glass drug device broke apart on the man’s body. He was taken to the UC San Diego Medical Center for treatment. There was no restitution order seeking money from Lugo on replacing the glass bong or for any medical expenses to the victim. Brown said in court he was not opposed to Lugo receiving probation or being released.

Lugo pleaded guilty April 11 to felony assault, and a second assault charge involving great bodily injury was dismissed.

Her attorney, Lindsey Willard, told the judge Lugo completed some training courses while in the Las Colinas Women’s Detention Facility and a copy of a certificate she earned was sent to Halgren.

Halgren suspended payment of the court fines for six months.

man witnessed by his brother fleeing an Ocean Beach home, in which the body of his mother was found early on May 1, was wounded and arrested in an officer-involved shooting the following day.

The suspect, identified by police as Daniel Chase McKibben, 36, had allegedly been trespassing at a La Mesa home near Lake Murray.

McKibben is in custody at a local hospital, police say.

The body found in the Ocean Beach home has since been identified as Heidi Green, 59, of Los Angeles County.

McKibben is considered a suspect in the Ocean Beach homicide that prompted two separate Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) responses to a home in the 5000 block of Niagara Avenue near the OB Pier. The SWAT unit evacuated residences near Green’s home, as well as shutting down a nearby intersection, in an unsuccessful search for the suspect.

Police were told McKibben shared the house with his mother.

The incident began when the SDPD received a call about 1 a.m.

May 1 asking them for a welfare check at the Niagara Avenue home. The caller told police a fam-

ily member had received a message from his mother, which caused them to be concerned, SDPD Lt. Matthew Dobbs said.

McKibben allegedly was armed with a knife when he refused to leave another home a day later on May 2 in the 7900 block of Rainey Street in La Mesa shortly before 9:30 a.m. He was shot by a police officer and wounded twice, in the hand and shoulder, during an armed confrontation, said La Mesa Police Lt. Brian Stoney. The suspect was subsequently admitted to a local hospital in stable condition and is expected to survive. The homeowner was not injured.

It is uncertain if or how McKibben is connected to the family in La Mesa whose home he was allegedly trespassing in.

McKibben was later identified as a suspect in the slaying of his mother found dead in her home the previous day.

The public is being asked to avoid the area while La Mesa police continue their investigation.

Over the years, control of the newspapers has passed between Main and San Diego Community News Network owner David Mannis. The former married couple founded San Diego Community Newspaper Group together in the 1980s.

Even after their divorce in 2002, they worked together on La Jolla Village News, Peninsula Beacon, Beach & Bay Press, and Downtown News until Main took full control at the end of 2008.

Mannis decided to enter the newspaper industry again in 2009 and founded San Diego Uptown News. He later bought Downtown News from San Diego Community Newspaper Group and grew his newspaper network to include six papers stretching across the county. After 40 years in the newspaper industry, he has decided to enter semi-retirement.

THE PATIO GROUP Change is in the air at The Patio on Lamont in Pacific Beach and Fireside by the Patio in Point Loma, where new corporate executive chef, Jarrod Moiles, is making “small impact” revisions to their menus.

Moiles was recently hired by The Patio Group, which runs several other local dining establishments such as Saska’s Steakhouse in Mission Beach, The Patio on Goldfinch in Mission Hills and others. He will oversee culinary operations primarily at the “patio” restaurants, saying that about 20 percent of their menus will be revamped in the coming weeks.

“Seasonality will be a main focus,” he added while referring to the Baja-style seared halibut with English pea puree he is introducing on Lamont Street. The dish will be accompanied by citrus-mint pea salad. Such new creations are being tested initially as specials. If the public responds favorably, they will graduate onto the regular menus.

Moiles is an alum of Johnson and Wales University in Rhode Island and last worked as executive chef for Rancho Valencia Resort in Rancho Santa Fe. “I’m very excited to be involved with The Patio Group and their current sous chefs and executive sous chefs on each property,” he said. “The company has a great

LIBERTY PUBLIC MARKET There have been some recent comings and goings at Liberty Public Market in Point Loma, which currently leases to 26 food and product vendors.

The newcomers are Landini’s Pizzeria, a Little Italy-based eatery specializing in New York pizza and Florentine-inspired pasta dishes. It is joined by The Latin Chef, which moved to the market this month from its original Pacific Beach location. The kitchen specializes in authentic Peruvian fare.

Gone from the lineup are Fishbone Kitchen and Roast. A market rep tells us those slots and others will be replaced in the coming months by businesses such as Ono Grinds, Bao Bar Boba & Bun, Seoul KBBQ, and more.

THE 3RD CORNER Wine manger Todd Mulligan of The 3rd Corner in Ocean Beach recently added more than 150 new wines to the inventory, raising the number of labels to about 700.

It’s the largest stock increase made to the restaurant/wine shop in years, he noted.

The latest additions embody “unique worldly wines” from Greece, Turkey, Hungary and the country of Georgia. Organic wines

of domestic and French origins containing minimal sulfites were brought in as well.

Also new are wine tastings held twice a week, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. “We used to hold them only a couple times a month,” said Mulligan. The events usually feature six regional-specific varietals for $20. Check the website under “menus” for details.

A bevy of cheesemakers from the U.S. and Euorpe will take part in Liquid City’s inaugural Cheese Expo 2019, to be held from 1:30 to 6 p.m., May 19, at Brick in Liberty Station.

hoenix transplants Chris and Jo Peregoy purchased the Ocean Beach Business Center in September 2017 after years of searching for the ideal vacation spot for their dog.

They discovered Dog Beach, fell in love with OB and have never looked back.

“My wife and I both left corporate jobs and advancement opportunities in Phoenix to purchase the OBBC,” said Chris, adding, “Jo left most of her family, and I left my two eldest daughters, 11 and 7, to move here to run this business.”

The Peregoys have worked hard ever since to clean up the old building at 4836 Santa Monica Ave., turning it into "a warm, welcoming, helpful community hub.”

The couple’s full-service store provides an array of copying, printing and shipping services, plus offering supplies, marketing materials, fliers and brochures, bulk mailers, binding, lamination and custom-designed orders.

Lazy Hummingbird coffee shop also leases space in part of the OBBC building.

“We like to call ourselves the one-stop shop,” said Chris, adding, “We are the only location in OB for single-page print jobs.

We’re also a main shipping center. We have Fedex, UPS and the post office right around the corner at our disposal.

“Seventy-five percent of our topline sales is shipping. Even though we’re a business center, we’re as much a shipping center.”

The Peregoys had three goals in moving to OB. “We wanted to get out of Phoenix, be by the beach and own our own business. This came up and checked off all three boxes. So we said, ‘Let’s do it.’”

The Peregoys have created a synergy with other OB small-businesses.

“We work really closely with

“Their customers buy stuff and send them to us to package, because some of these things are 100-year-old antiques that need to go clear across the country.

They trust us to bring their items here, have us package them up then find the best shipping rate.”

The Peregoys are laser focused on Ocean Beach.

“We’re very community oriented and we see a lot of local smallbusinesses come in and out of this building,” said Chris. “We support them, post on social media and tag their media accounts.”

Peregoy offered one successful local networking story.

“We helped a guy who used to sell pasta at the farmers market, printed out his paper menus,” he said. “Now he’s got a storefront on Voltaire Street and is one of the most popular Italian restaurants.”

The couple also gives back.

Steve decided to have the Greek salad, which was advertised as fresh spring mix lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, topped with Greek feta cheese, klamata olives and topped with their house dressing. That was $8, and if he wanted chicken or gyros it was $3.50 extra.

It was a very large salad; the dressing was on the side; and everything was fresh and crispy.

When we were asked if we wanted anything to drink I asked if they had ice tea. I was told they did not, but almost immediately the cook told me that she could make me a glass. I was impressed with her wanting to make me

happy, but she was so busy that I declined her offer.

The “tacos” were delicious. I think that I actually prefer tacos on pita bread now, rather than on tortillas. The bread was soft, fresh, and absolutely stuffed with the chicken that I ordered. Three of them were too many for me, and I brought one home to snack on later in the day. The yogurt sauce on the top was also delicious and just right for the meal.

I was very impressed with the both of our meals. Steve said that he would definitely order the salad again, and it should be mentioned

Looking ahead, the Peregoys would like to expand more as well as creating more self-serve space for customers to do packaging.

The pair refer to their business as “our legacy we want to share with our kids.”

“We’re doing this because we love this place,” said Chris. “We’re here for the long haul. This is going to be a generational business. We intend on passing it down.”

I should point out that they have daily lunch specials every day, such as lunch plates for $8.50 with your choice of beef shawarma, chicken shawarma or gyros meat with a side of rice and salad. Don’t want that? How about a two for $12 sandwich deal on any sandwich and the sandwich combo can be had with fries and a drink for $12.

There are many selections to choose from. Maybe I will start at the top of the menu and just cross one off each time I am there. In the meantime, I am going to go and finish my third taco and enjoy it after completing this review.

n the age of online shopping and one-click ordering, buying has never been easier, but for a growing number of people in Point Loma and Ocean Beach, the notion of buying new is being replaced with buy nothing and social media is helping make it all possible.

It’s called the “Buy Nothing Project.” The group was started near Seattle in 2013 by two friends who wanted to create a gift economy in their neighborhood that was focused on reducing and reusing. It’s since spread to communities around the world, including San Diego where there are currently three groups in Point Loma and two in Ocean Beach.

The premise is simple: use the group to “gift” items to your neighbors or ask group members for something you want or need.

The catch? No money can exchange hands and you cannot trade one item for another. It has to be given away (gifted) for free.

“It’s a bit addicting,” Jeanette Woodward said. “It feels so good to give something away that you are not using, and you are giving it to someone that is often

Woodward helps manage one of the groups in Point Loma. All of the groups are managed using the group feature on Facebook and members participate by joining the group closest to where they live.

“Buy Nothing is hyper-local with the idea being you are gifting and receiving from your immediate neighbors,” Woodward said. “So, it helps facilitate meeting your neighbors and develop those relationships.”

Common items, she said, that are gifted or requested in the groups include furniture, household appliances, children’s clothing, toys and items for babies. A quick scan of one of the Ocean Beach Buy Nothing groups shows a request for a candle holder, boys jeans to give away, 40 hangers up for grabs and a pair of cleats ready to be donated.

Pointers’ teams winning spring league titles

pring sports teams have already wrapped up three league championships as league finals and CIF playoffs are looming.

BOYS BASEBALL The team wrapped up a third straight Eastern League title, going undefeated with two league games remaining. On a 17-game unbeaten streak covering nearly two months, the team has risen to the fourth-ranked position of 20 CIF Div. II teams.

Overall, the team, under firstyear head coach Jeff Solis, sports an outstanding 21-4-2 record for a .840 winning percentage, also winning the 6A division of the annual Mike Morrow Tournament.

The team posted a 12-0 mark in Western League play while going 15-3 overall, finishing the season ranked 13th of all CIF schools.

Within their own Div. II, the Pointers were ranked fifth.

Coach Joe Rodriguez and his team play nine-hole matches against opponents at numerous local courses. Following play, the lowest five scores are added up to give the team score for the match.

In the City League 18-hole tournament held April 30 at Balboa, the Pointers took first with top scores from Jackson Moss (40, 39), Adam Moss (40, 43) and Riley Wagstaff (40, 43).

Jackson Moss, a junior, was the medalist, or low scorer, in 17 of the team's matches.

The boys and girls teams, both under head coach Keith DeLong, saw the boys go undefeated during the dual-meet season.

In results from the Eastern League finals, senior Altan Mitchell and sophomore Jordyn Duby each took first place in two events.

Mitchell won the boys long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 5 inches. He also won the triple jump with a mark of 46 feet, 7.5 inches. He won by almost three feet over the second-place finisher.

Junior Travis Lewis won the high jump, soaring over the bar at 6 feet, 2 inches. His teammates took the next four places with scores of 5 feet, 8 inches or better.

Long distance veteran Hunter Sweet, a senior, won the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:25.69.

On the girls side, Duby's two wins were in distance events. She crossed the finish line first in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:12.57. In the 3200 meter run she also defeated all others with a time of 11:21.14.

Junior Sadie Heckman was first in the triple jump with a leap of 36 feet, 1 inch. Her teammates took seven of the first eight places in this event.

t all started with a large framed photograph, recently hung on our family’s dining room wall,” says Point Loma resident, author, and retired college history professor, Dr. Colleen O’Connor.

La Playa Trail Association will present O’Connor in “Write Your Own History” on Tuesday, May 21 at Point Loma Assembly, 3035 Talbot St. A suggested donation of $10 is received at the door, and light appetizers begin at 5:30 p.m. and the lecture will be 6 to 7 p.m. The public is welcome, and you might want to bring a treasured photo.

“When asked about the seven, elegantly dressed women in the photo,” O’Connor said, “my mother remarked, ‘That is your grandmother and her sisters.’ Shortly after, my mother died.

“That photograph and my failure to ask more questions eventually led to my journey of a lifetime.”

O’Connor’s Aunt Marcella suggested they both discover more about those women.

Off they trekked by train to the Dakotas. “Relatives still lived there, and we visited them all – collecting photos and stories. Cut to the chase, I was completely wrong in my assumptions about those women in the photograph.”

She shakes her head, “I earned a PhD in history, but I was stupid.

“The women were not the wealthy elite types I thought they were. They were homesteaders.

They owned land in their own names, were crack shots with rifles, raised turkeys, field-dressed their own dinners, and were seamstresses. They made those elegant gowns in the photograph.

“And, my grandmother was a suffragette – who held ‘right to vote’ meetings in her Dakota farmhouse.”

That one remarkable photograph and the trip to the Dakotas, sparked a millennial project that collected thousands of local photographs from San Diegans; half a dozen exhibitions (two at South

Bay and El Cajon Superior Courthouses; the San Diego History Center; a projection of photos on the sails of the Star of India; a book (“Faces of San Diego”), and an NEH grant to replicate the project nationwide.

“We started with an exhibit in the art gallery at Mesa College,” O’Connor says. “Faculty members did the framing and mounting, while art students joined in. It helped that we had the formidable blessing of our president, the current SDCCD chancellor, Dr. Constance Carroll.”

Then the entire City joined in with a series of columns and photographs on “How To” write one’s family history, printed weekly in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The excursion continues today in a wide spectrum of ideas. Photos from O’Connor’s recent published collaboration, “San Diego

Drag Racing and the Bean Bandits,” are exhibited at Liberty Station’s Con Pane Rustic Breads & Café.

At the presentation, O’Connor will be flanked by two notables in the field of writing: educator Claire Wachowiak, practiced in the art of creating family photo books and documenting family histories; and, author and TV personality Sandi Masori, wizard in self publishing.

Masori is the “go to” expert in publishing business authority books, which provide information about your industry and how to promote it.

The three will combine talents at the upcoming May 21 lecture, insisting that you start with a photograph “that speaks to you. Then get yourself a note pad, a chunk of cardboard, a napkin, and write something about that photograph.

he sights, foods and sounds of Louisiana will once again be in the San Diego spotlight when the 18th annual Gator by The Bay music and food celebration takes place at Spanish Landing Park, from May 9 through 12. Truly a feast for the senses, you’ll find parades, magicians and fire breathers, Cajun and Creole delicacies, including 10,000 pounds of crawfish, all in a beautiful waterfront setting.

The highlight of the event is the music, with more than 100 performers, ranging from zydeco to swing, across seven stages, with five large wooden dancefloors, perfect for swing dancing or just tapping your feet.

Gator by the Bay is a true labor of love. According to the event’s producer, Peter Oliver, there is a core group of 40 people behind the scenes and up to 450 volunteers throughout the weekend, as well as 15,000 attendees on the day. Notably, admission is free for all active military personnel with I.D., while children 17 and under, are free with paid adult.

This year’s show includes musical talent from around the world, including two Grammy winners; zydeco group Chubby Carrier & the Bayou Swamp Band and blues guitarist Lenny “Fuzzy” Rankins as well as award-winning pianist Marcia Ball. Oliver notes the festival has expanded its booking since its 2001 inception.

“While I do try to showcase Cajun, zydeco, blues and gospel sounds, I also like to have big diversity in the music. There are so many great local acts that can be featured, and I listen to what people are saying about various performers around town, so we can offer traditional sounds as well as something a little different.”

This year that includes a surf band for the first time, The Tourmaliners. “We’ve created a set list that we feel will best serve this event,” said guitarist Deven Berryhill. “We will be performing 18-20 songs that we think will keep the

dance floor hopping as well as represent the best of the California surf sound.”

Not only is Gator by by the Bay a major boon for local music fans, it’s considered one of the hottest tickets in town for local musicians.

“I have performed at Gator by the Bay every year since 2006,” commented blues guitarist Robin Henkel. “I would say it’s one of San Diego’s premier festivals if not ‘the’ premier festival. The music of Louisiana as well as other forms of American roots music are wonderfully represented. Lots of different people mix and it’s really something special.”

Guitarist Eric Lieberman of Blue Largo is a veteran of the event. He notes his band tailors their set for big outdoor events like this, “but only slightly,” he said goodnaturedly. “I probably tend to shy away from playing a very quiet slow ballad type of song, such as ‘The Long Goodbye,’ from our latest record, in the interest of keeping the set more upbeat.”

Drummer Joel Kmak of the Farmers agrees. “We specifically do songs from our repertoire that are more appropriate for Gator, like Chuck Berry's "You Never Can Tell." Lieberman notes a less obvious difference in his band’s sets. “I probably talk less too, since we typically have only an hour to play at

these shows, as opposed to having three or four hours to play at a regular club gig.”

Blues singer Michele Lundeen concurs with Henkel that Gator by the Bay is special amongst a sea of great annual local events. “My favorite thing is the smiles on people's faces,” she said. “Yep! Just in general there is a natural glow and flow about this festival, it feels like a big giant family party, the ones where everyone gets along, laughs, sings along, dances, eats and makes lasting memories.”

Plans are already underway for 2020’s Gator by the Bay. “I already have two bands booked,” Oliver laughed. With such big crowds, is it possible the event will grow in the future? “The truth is, we love our little boutique festival,” Oliver said. “We like that it’s an intimate experience. You can go up and introduce yourself, shake the hand of anyone performing here.” He muses for a moment. “It’s probably just right the way it is. We don’t need jumbotrons.”
