PLHS students speak out against orca shows School board endorses animal sanctuaries BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON Attempts to persuade SeaWorld San Diego to change its business model eliminating orca shows was rejoined recently as Point Loma High School (PLHS) students supported the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) board, which unanimously endorsed a resolution calling for SeaWorld to explore animal sanctuaries for its marine mammal entertainers. This renouncement of SeaWorld from the school board comes during the theme park's recent national advertising campaign trying to improve its image. Coincidentally, the San Diego school board's resolution also comes

Sea lion strandings at record levels; SeaWorld rescues, rehabs hundreds Wolf Moon Photographer Evgeny Yorobe shot this image of the full Wolf Moon in January as it set behind the new Point Loma lighthouse. It's called Wolf Moon because it appeared when wolves howled in hunger outside the villages. It is also known as the Old Moon. To some Native American tribes, this was the Snow Moon. San Diego native Yorobe (@evgenyyorobephotography on Instagram) also has photography on display at Mission Beach Coffee Break in south Mission Beach.

BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON A surprising influx of malnourished and dehydrated sea lions has SeaWorld San Diego and its trainers working overtime to nurse them back to health before returning them to the wild. More than 550 marine mammals have been rescued so far in 2015, which is more than double the usual number, said SeaWorld spokesman A sea lion at the SeaWorld rehab facility.
