Welcome!

From the President

I am honored to present the 2025–26 San Diego College of Continuing Education Annual Report. As the adult education arm of the San Diego Community College District, we are among the nation’s longest-standing and largest public noncredit institutions, serving approximately 30,000 students each year across seven campuses. Our student population encompasses refugees, retirees, recent high school graduates, military veterans, immigrants, mid-career professionals, justice-impacted individuals and more.

We are proud to be among the most diverse colleges in the country – culturally, ethnically, and educationally. And like the communities we serve, we continue to evolve. This past year brought several major milestones: we are more than halfway through a comprehensive renovation of the historic ECC Theatre; we opened a new mental health center for students; we continue to grow our concurrent enrollment program for high school students; and we remain unrelenting in our commitment to celebrating our varied, unique, and proud communities.

This year’s Annual Report is an expression of our college-wide theme, Sustained in Unity. The stories and achievements highlighted in these pages reflect what is possible when students, faculty, staff, and community partners work together with a shared purpose to expand opportunity and transform lives. In keeping with this theme, the report itself has been printed on ecofriendly paper, underscoring our commitment to sustainability and responsible stewardship for the communities we serve.

Vision 2030 Noncredit Summit San Diego College of Continuing Education (SDCCE) co-hosted the third annual Vision 2030 Noncredit Summit, a statewide convening of adult education and policy leaders focused on strengthening noncredit education and expanding opportunity for adult learners. The event took place October 16–17 at Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC).

Presented by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office (CCCCO) and co-hosted by SDCCE and Mt. SAC in partnership with the Association of Community and Continuing Education (ACCE), the two-day summit brought together educators, legislators, and workforce leaders to highlight innovative practices that transform lives and advance Vision 2030’s goals of equity, access, and success for all Californians.

Moving Forward

Measure HH Updates Thanks to voter-approved Measure HH — a $3.5 billion bond funding new and renovated classrooms, labs, and other facilities across the San Diego Community College District ­— a major refurbishment of the historic Educational Cultural Complex Theatre is on track for completion by spring 2027. The project, which broke ground in spring 2025, is one of a dozen initiatives funded by the bond measure.

“The Educational Cultural Complex Theatre has been a cornerstone of arts and culture in the Southeastern San Diego community for nearly 50 years,” said San Diego College of Continuing Education President Dr. Tina M. King. “For generations, it has served as a vibrant hub where creativity, education, and community come together – uplifting voices, showcasing talent, and telling the stories that matter most to our diverse community. This renovation is not just about restoring a building; it’s about honoring a rich legacy and investing in a future where the arts continue to thrive and serve our community for decades.”

A Center of Innovation The College of Continuing Education has a new centralized hub to promote instructional innovation supporting highquality, accessible, and engaging teaching across online, hybrid, HyFlex, and in-person platforms. The Learning & Teaching Center at the North City Campus was officially unveiled on April 17, 2026, with a grand opening hosted by the college’s Instructional Learning Technology program.

A Symbol of Community Created in 1974 by the late Rossie Wade, an artist-in-residence at the Educational Cultural Complex (ECC), the original Black Family Statue became a lasting symbol of Black pride, family, and community. Over time, the wooden sculpture deteriorated and was ultimately removed from Neil Petties Mountain View Park.

A $195,000 grant secured in 2023 by former State Assembly member and current State Senator Dr. Akilah Weber Pierson made it possible to recreate the landmark in durable metal. Led by welding instructor Mike Bradbury, students and faculty in the College of Continuing Education’s Welding Department brought the statue back to life, blending craftsmanship with community pride.

The restored replica was unveiled on June 13, drawing widespread media coverage and renewed public appreciation for one of San Diego’s most significant cultural landmarks.

For years, San Diego’s third-oldest park stood without its beloved centerpiece. Thanks to the dedication of the community, the Educational Cultural Complex, and its many partners, the Black Family Statue once again stands as a powerful symbol of resilience, heritage, and belonging. Its return affirms a shared commitment to preserving the history, culture, and stories that define our community—for generations to come.

Promoting Our C Promoting Our College

A redesigned website, van wraps, over 30 published news stories, and a series of Media Fest events illustrate how the Office of Communications and Creative Services is working tirelessly to promote your College of Continuing Education in building enrollment and community support.

Among the highlights:

A redesigned, mobile-friendly, sdcce.edu website debuted in February with streamlined navigation and improved accessibility, making it easier than ever to explore programs, access student resources, and stay connected anytime, anywhere. As part of the redesign, nearly 8,000 pages were consolidated into a more focused, organized, and student-centered digital experience.

Led by PIO Brenna Leon Sandeford, the Communications and Creative Services team earned two statewide honors from the Community College Public Relations Organization (CCPRO) at the organization’s 2026 annual conference in Paso Robles.

Multimedia Specialist Chris Radomski received a prestigious Gold Award for an inspiring video narrated by Francisco Contreras, 47, the college’s 2025 commencement student speaker. The team also received a Bronze Award in the “Before & After” category for a logo developed by Graphic Artist/Photographer Dustin De Los Santos in collaboration with Associated Students.

The Communications and Creative Services team held its first-ever Media Fest event tour for faculty, classified professionals, and administrators at multiple campuses in October and November of 2025. The tour provided employees new opportunities to connect with the team and access valuable professional resources, ranging from headshots to video features.

Buliding on the success of the tour, the team hosted a student-focused Media Fest in spring 2026.

ColTapestry of Cultures A Filipino American History Month Lunch and Learn. Black History Month storytelling, jazz, and poetry. A Lunar New Year lion dance. A Southwest Asian and North African celebration featuring a darbuka artist, Turkish guitarist, and dance performances. An Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebration featuring Polynesia dance.

And a wide array of Latinx/Chicanx Heritage Month events, including folklórico dance, mariachi music, and traditional Latin dishes.

All this and more were brought to fruition during the 2025–26 academic year through the efforts of a dedicated Cultural Events Taskforce. The group kicked off its planning at a dynamic summer retreat, where members reflected on past successes, generated new ideas, and laid the groundwork for a series of engaging events across the college’s seven campuses.

Our students come from all 50 states and 159 countries around the world, and cultural events celebrate who we are. Founded in 1914 on the principles of inclusion and social justice, the College of Continuing Education welcomes everyone – from immigrants and refugees to military veterans and retirees.

Profiles

Marlee Kreschmer: Earning a CNA Certificate While in High School

Marlee Kreschmer knew early on she wanted to become a nurse, so she jumped at the chance to start training in a Certified Nurse Assistant program at San Diego College of Continuing Education through a concurrent enrollment agreement with Kearny High School.

“I knew from the start that this program was for me,” she said. “The coursework was manageable, and if you didn’t understand something, the instructors made sure you got it. They prepared you so well for the licensing exam that you almost couldn’t possibly fail.”

After completing the program in summer 2023, she worked at a nursing and rehabilitation center in National City, then as a medical technician at a retirement community in Clairemont.

Now 20, she’s a CNA at an assisted living and retirement community near New Orleans, where her Coast Guard–based husband was recently stationed, and plans to enter a nursing program soon.

With over 100 hours of supervised clinical training, extensive classroom study, and more than two years of experience in two states — all at no cost and with no debt Kreschmer feels fully prepared for a nursing career. “You really couldn’t ask for more,” she said.

Getting an Early Start on Building a Career Across the San Diego College of Continuing Education’s seven campuses, an increasing number of high schoolers are getting a jump on joining workforce pathways by training for careers ranging from healthcare to the trades.

Kevin Morales was part of a pioneering group of 16 Lincoln High School students who became licensed HVAC technicians through a concurrent enrollment program at the college’s Educational Cultural Complex. Mariana Gonzalez earned her certified nursing assistant credential before starting her senior year at Kearny High School, thanks to an agreement with Continuing Education’s Harbor View Campus in Barrio Logan. Sydney Scheidt got a head start on her journey to becoming an elementary school educator when she earned a Child Development certificate 8 | San Diego College of Continuing Education

at Continuing Education’s Mesa College Campus while still in high school. And English language learners at multiple San Diego Unified School District campuses have also enrolled at the College of Continuing Education, where they boost their English fluency while simultaneously preparing for careers as bilingual optical technicians and ophthalmic assistants.

“These initiatives continue to illustrate why San Diego College of Continuing Education remains at the forefront of expanding career-building opportunities for anyone aspiring to a meaningful and rewarding career, and they underscore why alumni of our workforce programs generate more than $250 million for the regional economy each year,” said college President Dr. Tina M. King.

Sydney Scheidt: Getting a Career Jump in Education By age 18, Sydney Scheidt had already taken major steps toward her goal of becoming an educator. She’s worked as a camp counselor and childcare staff member at the Mission Valley YMCA, serves as a part-time instructional aide supporting students – including those with special needs – and is now beginning her journey as a full-time university student. Her long-term goal: to become a public school teacher and eventually a principal.

Scheidt credits the San Diego College of Continuing Education’s Child Development program, which she completed while still in high school, with helping launch her path. “Taking the certificate program in high school really opened up a lot of doors,” she said. “I learned how young children think and how to handle different situations.”

As a senior at the Kearny School of Digital Media and Design, Scheidt discovered the School-Age & Leadership Certificate through her school’s Education to Employment Coordinator.

The program’s courses – focused on childcare theory, curriculum planning, and communication – equipped her with practical skills for working with youth.

“You’re better able to understand why kids act the way they do,” she said. “Some have gone through traumatic situations, and understanding that is important.”

NASCAR Debut San Diego College of Continuing Education (SDCCE) was represented at the Anduril 250 NASCAR Cup Series Race at Naval Base Coronado on June 21st, helping showcase skilled trades pathways that support the U.S. Navy’s submarine fleet.

NASCAR champion Brad Keselowski drove the No. 6 BuildSubmarines.com Ford Mustang Dark Horse for Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing, which featured SDCCE’s logo through a mission-aligned partnership at no cost to the college. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of the Navy in collaboration with Submarine Industrial Base Program Office, the race car serves as a national platform to promote BuildSubmarines.com, a workforce development initiative aimed at filling more than 100,000 manufacturing, engineering, and skilled trades jobs critical to building and sustaining naval submarines. “Standing in the pit

area and seeing the SDCCE logo on the hood of the BuildSubmarines.com car was an unforgettable experience, but what made the moment truly meaningful was knowing it represented opportunities for our students. This partnership highlights the power of connecting education with industry,” shared Brad Dorschel, Associate Dean of Career Technical Education at SDCCE. Report to Our Community 2025 - 2026 | 9

From Discarded Textiles To Award-Winning Designs Students from the College of Continuing Education’s Clothing and Textiles program showcased their sustainable design innovations at a national Textile Recovery Summit in late February.

The designs demonstrated how discarded materials can be repurposed for a wide range of uses.

Students earned the opportunity to participate after transforming donated textiles into functional, purposedriven creations during the collegewide “From the Unwanted to the Unbelievable” design competition, held in partnership with Goodwill San Diego at the West City Campus.

The summit’s top honor went to “The Carry All,” recognized for its thoughtful design and social impact.

The project was inspired by a desire to provide youth in foster care with a dignified, durable way to carry

their belongings, offering an alternative to commonly used trash bags. Students reclaimed several pounds of donated denim jeans, jackets, and shirts to construct the exterior, selecting the material for its strength and longevity. For the interior lining, they repurposed bed sheets, tablecloths, curtains, and other salvaged fabrics, ensuring every component reflected the project’s sustainability mission.

The college’s participation underscores its commitment to hands-on, career-focused education that connects classroom learning with real-world environmental challenges. Through initiatives like the design competition and summit engagement, the College of Continuing Education is preparing students for emerging careers in sustainable fashion, textile recovery, and green manufacturing.

A Day at the Zoo The San Diego Zoo is a world-renowned destination, attracting travelers from across the globe. For San Diego College of Continuing Education students who come to the city to learn English, the zoo offers an additional benefit: an opportunity to practice English while enjoying a cultural immersion experience as part of their coursework.

During a November excursion, for example, students enrolled in beginner- to advanced-level ESL courses practiced English through interactive zoo activities, conversations, and casual chats with classmates from

other campuses. Many shared that it was their first visit to a zoo and were thrilled it was free, thanks to the college’s commitment to accessible adult education.

“Experiential learning is essential for language development,” said Dr. Bita Bookman, Dean of the ESL Program. “It allows students to practice English in authentic settings and build confidence using the language in academic and everyday contexts.”

The College of Continuing Education offers free ESL, Citizenship, and High School Diploma/Equivalency courses for adults year-round.

Free Automotive Program Opens Doors for Adult Learners At the College of Continuing Education, learning has no age limit. For retirees Filomena Alvarez and Josie Bhe Quiatchon, education is about community as much as learning new skills. They are enrolled in the college’s free automotive training program, using military family benefits to start a new chapter.

“I wanted to understand how automobiles work,” says Filomena, 62, who immigrated from Cavite, Philippines, 45 years ago. “If my car has problems, I won’t get ripped off… I can share this knowledge with my family.”

Josie, 60, from Bataan, adds, “My husband travels overseas sometimes, and I have to know how to handle the car on my own. Learning keeps me independent and sharp. Plus, the people here are so friendly, we’ve built a little community of our own.”

Automotive classes cover everything from basic engine care and coolant systems to advanced training that not only prepares students to become certified automotive technicians and pursue a career in the

Under the guidance of award-winning instructors like Gina Grossini-Concha, students have earned community recognition for their work, highlighting both artistic growth and personal achievement.

By blending creativity with tailored support, the Adaptive Arts and Crafts course empowers students to build confidence, develop skills, and pursue their educational goals in an inclusive environment.

A Big Thank You San Diego College of Continuing Education remains most appreciative for the strong support of our local, state, and federal representatives, who continue to advocate for our students. In recent months, for example, Assemblymember Dr. LaShae Sharp-Collins, in partnership with the San Diego County Office of Education, hosted the 79th Assembly District Apprenticeship Fair at the Mid-City Campus, welcoming students, job seekers, educators, community organizations, and local high school students for a hands-on look at high-demand career pathways.

Just a few months later, Congressman Juan Vargas secured $500,000 in federal funding to support critical infrastructure improvements at the college, strengthening its capacity to serve approximately 30,000 adult learners annually.

This marks a second round of federal investment secured by Congressman Vargas. On June 17, 2024, he presented an initial $500,000 award at the Educational by historic storms in January of that year, when severe flooding near Ocean View Boulevard displaced families in Southeast San Diego.

A First-of-its-kind Mental Health Center The San Diego College of Continuing Education marked the grand opening of its Be Well Mental Health and Wellness Center on September 3, 2025, at its flagship Educational Cultural Complex campus. The center is the first in the nation designed specifically for noncredit adult learners, offering a safe, stigma-free space for mental health support.

Be Well offers cost-free counseling, referrals for ongoing care, and holistic wellness programming.

These services are especially important for the college’s diverse student population, which includes immigrants, veterans, working adults, and individuals from traditionally underserved communities.

“This has been a year and a half in the making,” said Dr. Shakerra Carter, Vice President of Student Services, who noted plans are in the works to expand services across all seven campuses. Mental Health Counselor Jeremy Garcia emphasized prevention,

stating the goal is to meet students where they are and support long-term success.

Mental Health Coordinator Janisha Street highlighted the center’s role in helping students navigate cultural transitions, while counselor Elizabeth Barajas expands access through Spanish-language support. “We have students who come from all over the world to try to make a difference in their lives,” Street said. “Sometimes it can be difficult to transition into a different culture and community, and what Continuing Education does here is try to make it safer for everyone involved, to give students the most positive educational outcome.”

Originally launched virtually in 2022, Be Well has evolved into a full-time, on-campus resource. College of Continuing Education’s President, Dr. Tina M. King said the center reflects a broader vision: creating an inclusive ecosystem where mental wellness supports student achievement and every learner can thrive.

A Second Chance The College of Continuing Education this year launched its first Rising Scholars Program, supported by a $169,387 three-year grant from the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office. Based at the Educational Cultural Complex, the program is designed to support students impacted by the criminal justice system through targeted academic and reentry services.

Rising Scholars offers academic counseling, career training, peer mentoring, mental health support, and connections to legal and community resources. “We are profoundly grateful to the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office for their support and including noncredit students in this program. This grant is more than funding, it’s a commitment to equity that ensures justice-impacted individuals are seen and supported to rise as learners, leaders, and changemakers in their communities,” said Continuing Education’s President, Dr. Tina M. King.

Now at more than 83 community colleges, 35 county jails, 44 youth facilities, and all state and federal prisons in California, the Rising Scholars Network is serving approximately 20,000 justice-impacted individuals.

And for good reason. According to College for Convicts: The Case for Higher Education in American Prisons, the recidivism rate for the U.S. prison population ranges from 67% to 80%, but drops to 30% for ex-offenders who receive vocational training, and to 13.7% for those who earn an associate degree.

A Standout Year for Professional Development Professional development is a critical element of any organization, and the College of Continuing Education is no exception. The 2025–26 Professional Development Series paired institution-wide convenings with targeted Flex sessions, outside speakers, safety training, wellness supports, and restorative workshops, with notable speakers including Tim Wise and Loretta Ross.

The college’s inspiring Community Conversations Lunch and Learn series, a key component of Professional Development presentations, focused on reflecting on and discussing author Tim Wise’s powerful address delivered at Fall Convocation. An influential voice on culture, politics, and power, Wise explored how racial inequality is embedded in legal systems, institutions, and societal structures, and why understanding this is essential to preserving diversity,

equity, inclusion, and accessibility in higher education.

He challenged participants to move beyond awareness and toward transformative action, offering historical context, strategic tools, and a bold vision for institutional change.

The Professional Development Department also organized a special conversation featuring renowned activist, scholar, educator, and author Loretta Ross, who explored how connection, accountability, and dialogue can serve as tools for social change featuring her book, Calling In: How to Start Making Change with Those You’d Rather Cancel.

A special shout-out to Professional Development Coordinator Carla Grossini-Concha and the entire Professional Development team for an impressive year of professional development opportunities.

Welding a Dream San Diego College of Continuing Education again earned First Place in the Most Outstanding Float category at the 44th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade. The award, presented by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., recognized the college’s “Hope in Action: A Dream Still Unfolding” float, which was designed and built by welding students and faculty at the Educational Cultural Complex.

The 30-foot float featured a metal-crafted pop-up book symbolizing Dr. King’s dream, rotating crowds, descriptive flags, and vibrant motion banners. Led by welding instructor Mike Bradbury, the project exemplified the college’s commitment to project-based learning, giving students hands-on experience in teamwork, time management, and working within budget constraints.

Rodney L. Fowler Sr., a 64-year-old lifelong southeastern San Diego resident, was among those students who worked on the float. Fowler shared “Dr. King’s vision was about education and opportunity for all, and this parade gives me the chance to give back, honor that dream, and celebrate a place that continues to uplift generations of students.”

The college has been closely tied to the event since its inception, with then-President Robert Matthews joining members of Alpha Phi Alpha’s Zeta Sigma Lambda Chapter in 1980 to help launch the annual parade.

Scholarships and Awards Open Doors for 124 Continuing Education Students The San Diego College of Continuing Education and the San Diego College of Continuing Education Foundation distributed $95,000 in scholarships during the annual Scholarship and Awards Celebration on April 11.

A total of 124 students were selected from a highly competitive pool of 321 applicants, recognized for their academic achievement, personal growth, and community service. Each recipient received at least $500, with two students awarded $10,000 scholarships.

Among the recipients was Marisela Ramirez, a high school diploma/equivalency student whose determination reflects the spirit of this year’s awards.

“I want to thank my daughter for helping me get into this college,” Ramirez said. “I also want to thank my teachers, Doria and Elissa. If it hadn’t been for them,

I would not be receiving this scholarship.” She is now working toward earning an associate degree.

Another recipient, Dabens Duronne, 19, received the Price Family Foundation SDCCE Cares Scholarship.

“As an immigrant student from Haiti, my journey has not always been easy, but education has given me a new direction and purpose,” said Duronne, who is now enrolled in an Information Systems program at San Diego City College. “Receiving this scholarship motivates me to keep pushing forward and striving for success. I hope my story inspires others to stay focused on their goals, no matter where they come from.”

All scholarships and awards are made possible through the San Diego Continuing Education Foundation, with generous support from donors, faculty, and classified professionals.

Basketball Meets Community Impact The San Diego College of Continuing Education Foundation hosted its inaugural Hoop Hysteria basketball fundraiser, an all-day event at the Jackie Robinson YMCA. The April 12 exhibition brought together local residents, students, and an array of local leaders who were treated to a community resource fair. The highlight: a celebrity basketball game featuring former and current athletes, including former NBA forward Dominique McGuire and former NFL wide receiver Tyrell Williams. “This event is about bringing people together for a common purpose – supporting our students,” said Dr. Tami Foy, the foundation’s executive director. “Hoop Hysteria allows us to celebrate community spirit while raising critical resources that help our students overcome barriers and stay focused on achieving their educational and career goals.”

Added college President, Dr. Tina M. King, “Events like Hoop Hysteria demonstrate the power of community engagement. Our students come to us with incredible determination and potential. By supporting initiatives like this, our community is helping ensure that every student has the opportunity to pursue their education and build a brighter future.”

Apprenticeship Readiness Program Breaks Barriers with First All-Female Cohort In Spring 2026, San Diego College of Continuing Education’s Apprenticeship Readiness Program (ARP) celebrated another successful semester while reaching a historic milestone with the launch of its first all-female cohort. In partnership with the San Diego Workforce Partnership and the San Diego Building and Construction Trades Council, the 9-week program prepared participants for high-demand careers in the union construction trades through industry-recognized MC3 training, seven certifications, hands-on learning, and direct connections to apprenticeship opportunities.

Designed to address the region’s growing skilled workforce needs, the program equipped students with the technical skills, job readiness, and supportive services needed to succeed. The inaugural all-female cohort represented a significant step toward expanding access and creating pathways for more women to enter the construction industry. Together, the Spring 2026 cohort strengthened the pipeline of skilled workers while advancing economic mobility for students across San Diego and Imperial counties.

Protecting Your Safety Your safety is our priority. Which is why the College of Continuing Education, as part of the San Diego Community College District, in the fall of 2025 launched the SDCCDsafe smartphone app that turns any smartphone into a personal safety device. With SDCCDsafe, users can instantly connect with College Police, invite a trusted friend or family member to remotely monitor their travel on or off campus, or anonymously report suspicious activity to College Police and include relevant photos or video.

The San Diego Community College District also utilizes RAVE Mobile Safety’s ALERT system for rapid dissemination of critical safety and operational updates. At the College of Continuing Education, a Safety, Inclusion, and Belonging Task Force offers a dedicated space to discuss, review, and share thoughts, concerns, and ideas related to safety and belonging. Among the focus areas for 2025-26 was procedures for responding to federal immigration authorities on campus, including workshops and safety drills.

To further support employees, Administrative Services redesigned its intranet, creating a centralized hub for safety resources, video tutorials, emergency protocols, and other essential information.

Congratulations, Class of 2026!

Your San Diego College of Continuing Education on June 2 celebrated a record-breaking 11,122 diplomas and certificates for the Class of 2026 during the Commencement ceremonies at the Town and Country Resort in Mission Valley. More than 400 graduates who took part in the ceremony were surrounded by more than 2,200 family members, friends, and loved ones who were there to witness the transformative power of education.

Student speaker Naomi Garcia, a 30-year-old High School Diploma/HiSET graduate, articulated how the support of fellow students, faculty, and classified professionals encouraged her to succeed and motivated her to continue on with business classes at the College of Continuing Education before pursuing a counseling degree at San Diego Mesa College. She said she hopes her story inspires others facing adversity to keep moving forward.

“Some of us took a straight path to get here. Some of us took the long road,” she said. “But we made it. No matter how many times we fell, we are here.”
