BOARD REPORT MAY 10, 2018 SPECIAL REPORT TO THE PUBLIC Trustee Mary Graham reported that she attended the Community College League of California (CCLC) Annual Trustees Conference held May 4-6 in Valencia, California, where she heard presentations on emergency management. She suggested that this be a topic for a future Board meeting or retreat. Trustee Bernie Rhinerson said that he attended the Classified Service Awards event at Mesa College and is looking forward to the commencements. He also said he would be participating in a campus tour of City College with President Ricky Shabazz and representatives from the Christensen Foundation. Trustee Peter Zschiesche reported that he attended the CCLC Annual Trustees Conference, noting that he attended a panel on enrollment management which included Chancellor Constance Carroll. He also attended several Classified Service Awards events throughout the District. He said that he met with a representative from General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) regarding the San Diego Promise program and indicated that NASSCO was impressed by the well-attended recruitment event the company held at City College. Trustee Zschiesche complimented City College President Ricky Shabazz and those involved in coordinating such a successful event. Trustee Maria Nieto Senour said that she attended Classified Service Awards events at the colleges and CE, the CCLC Annual Trustees Conference, an opening of the Undocumented Student Resource Center at San Diego State University, and a recent San Diego and Imperial Counties Community Colleges Association (SDICCCA) meeting. She reported that at the SDICCCA Board Alliance meeting, she proposed that SDICCCA sponsor a workshop featuring Linda Hardy, an expert on cultural competency. Trustee Senour also presented 2017-18 Student Trustees, Ignacio Hernandez Valverde, Joseph Newell, and Alana Mahal Bermodes with plaques commemorating their service to the Board and District. Chancellor Constance Carroll reported that SB 1406, the bill to extend the baccalaureate pilot program, passed out of the Senate Appropriations Committee and also was approved by the entire Senate, with no negative votes. The bill is now on its way to the Assembly, beginning with the Assembly Committee on Higher Education, where it will be heard in late May or early June. The Chancellor noted that the Mesa College commencement will include the college’s first baccalaureate graduating class. The top issue in the State is the Governor’s May Revision Budget, which is scheduled to be released on May 11, following which Chancellor Carroll will report on how this budget proposal affects the SDCCD. Dr. Carroll also reminded the Board about the forthcoming commencements, in order of occurrence: Miramar College – Friday, May 18 (Campus Hourglass Fieldhouse); Mesa College – Saturday, May 19 (USD Jenny Craig Pavilion); City College – Friday, May 25 (Organ Pavilion, Balboa Park); Continuing Education – Friday, June 1 (Organ Pavilion, Balboa Park). Student Trustee Alana Mahal Bermodes reported on the successful season of the Miramar College men’s volleyball team, which included the team winning the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, and individual honors such as Athlete of the Year and Coach of the Year.

The governing board of the San Diego Community College District is composed of 5 elected members and 1 student trustee position. The student trustee position is filled on a rotating basis.
