oice of The Provincial “What kind of Salesians for theYouth of Today?” วั​ันที่​่� 1-4 สิ​ิงหาคม 2022 คณะซาเลเซ่ยนแขวังนักบูุญเปาโล ซ่ง� ประกอบู ไปด้วัยประเที่ศไที่ย ประเที่ศกัมพิูชาและสิปป ลาวั จั​ัดการประชุมสิมัชชาแขวัง หัวัข้อ “What kind of Salesians for the Youth of Today?” ณ บู้านฟน ฟูจัติ​ิ ใจั ซาเลเซ่ยนหัวัหิน จั.ประจัวับูฯ ม่ผูู้้ร่วัมประชุมสิมัชชาจัำานวัน 48 คน From 1-4 August 2022, the Salesian Province of St. Paul comprising Thailand, Cambodia and The People’s Republic of Laos, held the Provincial Chapter 2022 at the Salesian Retreat House, Hua Hin. 36 Salesians were present at this important meeting together with 12 lay observers. These lay observers came from the various lay movements in the Salesian Family, namely, the Salesian cooperators, representatives from the ADMA group, representatives from the teachers, representatives from the alumni and alumnae, and representatives from the young.

LAOS: THREE SALESIANS IN ONE SALESIAN PRESENCE Fr. Maccioni, the Salesians work in Laos in one mission station. How is the Salesian presence and mission received by the local (mostly) Buddhist population?

The MOU, renewable every 5 years, signed by the Revolutionary Lao Youth Union and the Salesian Foundation of Thailand, says that our work must be “unrelated to politics and religion”. So, officially, no religious activity. The Buddhist families from which most of our trainees come are very grateful to Don Bosco. Government officials, companies and shops appreciate the technical and human preparation of our graduates. We use Don Bosco and his educational method as a “channel” to communicate also religious and moral values!

Indeed, Don Bosco makes the difference in our work of education!

What are you and your community doing to encourage and empower the Laotian youth to live as responsible persons in the society and build up a career for life?

Don Bosco Youth Vocational Training Center Vientiane, an outreach project of the Thai Province for poor Lao young men, 16-30 years of age, teaches them a job in auto mechanic, electricity (1 year courses), motorcycle repair, welding skills (4 months courses).

Most of the 140 trainees who graduate every year are successful in finding a job. Besides the technical training, Don Bosco gives them also a good human education to prepare them for their future family life, and for their job performance in society. In our Center, we organize activities with experiences that teach discipline, order, cleanliness, good manners, self-sacrifice. We give talks on moral and religious principles, interpersonal behavior, dignity and value of work, health insurance, labor market, etc.

There are three Salesians in Laos: two Italians and two Vietnamese. Do you face any challenges to live and work together?

At present, our community, the only Salesian presence in Laos, is made up of 2 Vietnamese confreres and one Italian. Differences of character and cultural background are found in all communities. Accepting each other is a sign of maturity and of growth for all.

What challenges our community most is our mission for our poor Lao trainees: speaking their language, accepting and appreciating the values of their culture, spending our talents and our time for them, in order to make our work more fruitful and apostolic, thus preparing the soil also for possible future Lao Salesian vocations!

Fr. Patrick Maccioni, SDB Italian 77 years old. He arrived in Thailand when he was 18. After 53 years in Thailand, he was sent to Vientiane, Laos where he has been working for almost 6 years.

He represents the Salesian Foundation of Thailand for ordinary matters when he has to deal with the Lao Youth Union officials.

Besides, he is now the Rector and the Principal.

Joseph Prathan Sridarunsil, SDB, ordained Salesian deacon Paul Warayut Charoenphoom to the priesthood. Msgr. Silvio Siripong Charatsri, Bishop of Chanthaburi and Fr John Bosco Dheparat Pitisant, the Provincial of Thailand, concelebrated together with many other Salesian confreres, including other diocesan clergy. The ceremony was attended by members of the Salesian Family, relatives of the ordinand, teachers and students from Salesian institutions, and parishioners.

Seminar for New Teachers in Salesian Schools

คณะกรรมการฝายการศึกษาซาเลเซียนนําโดย คุณพอสมิต แดงอําพันธ ประธานคณะกรรมการฯ ไดจัดการสัมมนาครูใหม โรงเรียนในเครือซาเลเซียน ระหวางวันที่ 28 - 30 กรกฏาคม 2022 หัวขอ “ระบบปองกันแบบซาเลเซียน” ณ บานซาเลเซียนเพือ่ การฟน ฟู จิตใจหัวหิน จ.ประจวบฯ โดยคุณพอยะรัตน ไชยรา เปนวิทยากร พรอมดวยทีมงาน SYM มีผูรวมสัมมนาจํานวน 45 คน

On 28-30 July 2022, the Commission on Salesian Schools in Thailand, under the chairmanship of Fr Smith Daengampan, together with the heads of the various Salesian schools, organized the seminar for new teachers and personnel at the Salesian Retreat House in Huahin, Prachuabkhirikhan. 45 teachers joined this seminar under the theme “The Preventive System of Don Bosco”. The main speaker of this seminar was Fr. Yarat Chaiyara, together with the SYM Thailand team and our lay mission partner.

From 28-30 July 2022, the 10 senior catholic students of Huahin Vithayalai School, Prachuabkhirikhan had their annual spiritual recollection on the theme “The Mystical Life of Jesus”. This was held at Santitham Savio House, Sampran, and was animated by Fr. Charan Thongpiyaphom.

The Salesian Province of Thailand - Cambodia and Laos joined in the joy of God’s blessing in the priestl ordination of Fr. Joshua Sesugh Pilaku. He received the ordination on 30 July 2022 in Nigeria. The ordinand is a native of Nigeria. At present, he is a missionary in Cambodia.

Catechetical Seminar

วันที่ 29 กรกฎาคม 2022 คณะกรรมการคําสอนครอบครัว ซาเลเซียนไดจัดสัมมนาประจําป หัวขอ “การสอนคําสอนและ วิกฤติศีลธรรมที่ทาทายความเชื่อเยาวชนไทย” โดย คุณพอวิรัช อมรพัฒนา C.Ss.R. เปนวิทยากร ณ สํานักงานเจาคณะแขวง ซาเลเซียน กรุงเทพมหานคร มีผูเขารวมการสัมมนาจํานวน 60 คน

On 15 August 2022, Fr. Dheparat Pitisant, Provincial, Fr. Roel Soto, Delegate of Cambodia, and Bro. Norn Chandara, represented the Salesian Province of St. Paul, Thailand, at the perpetual religious profession of Bro. Anthony Nguyen Van Hoang, together with 9 other salesian confreres of Vietnam. The ceremony was held at Don Bosco Church, Xuan Hiep Parish, Ho Chi Minh City.

Bro. Anthony Nguyen Van Hoang is a missionary in Cambodia. He is continuing his studies in theology in Vietnam.

On 29 July 2022, the Commission on Catechetics of the Salesian Family organized the annual seminar with the theme “Teaching Catechism Amidst Morality Crisis That Challenges the Faith of Thai Youth” presented

by Fr. John Wirach Amonpattana, CSsR, at the Salesian Provincial House, Bangkok. There were 60 participants.

On 28 July 2022, Fr. Somchart Phewklieng, the rector, and Bro. Bunmee Charunsakhorn, led the senior aspirants of Nazareth House, Banpong, to a cool swim at the famous Erawan Waterfalls in Kanchanaburi Province.

From 28-30 July 2022, Fr. Phonchit Phoonvithayakit, the rector of Don Bosco Home, Chiengmai, led the salesian junior aspirants of Chiengmai to a holiday camping at the Don Bosco Agricultural Center, Doi Siew.

Aside from doing activities at the farm, the aspirants enjoyed also a swim at the Mae Sa Falls.
