Delivering Need It Mo We all know how tough the rising cost of living has been for many of us this year. Everything costs more. Rents have surged. And for too many of us, the gap between what we earn and what it takes to get by has just grown wider and wider. That’s why we’ve worked so hard to make sure you’re not left behind.

Big wins. Real results Over the past year, we’ve secured big improvements for your pay and working conditions. The recent 4.75% increase to minimum award rates and most SDA Agreements is higher than inflation. That means more money in your pocket. For a full-time adult retail, fast food or pharmacy worker, that’s around $47 extra every single week. And at the same time, we’ve held employers to account. Because what does a pay rise mean if it never makes it into to your hip pocket? We’ve recovered unpaid wages, super and compensation. Money that should have been in your pocket all along. These wins don’t happen by accident. They happen because we all stand together.

SECRETARY’S REPORT: DAVID BLISS

What You Need, When You st

Above: Branch Secretary David Bliss with Delegates Nicole and Leanne at Big W Charlestown

Same work, same pay. It’s only fair This year we also delivered one of the biggest wins in decades. For too long, workers aged 18 to 20, who are legally adults, have been paid less, despite doing the same work and paying the same costs as everyone else. How’s that fair? So we took it on. And together, we changed it. We went to the Fair Work Commission, and in March, the Commission ruled that all adult workers should be paid the same. It’s simple! Adults doing the same work should be paid adult pay. This will make a genuine difference every pay day. Because as we all know, there’s no such thing as “junior” rents, or junior “bills”. They’re the same. And now your pay is too. And we’ll make sure it goes straight into your pocket.

Fair pay. Secure work. A place to call home But let’s face it. Better pay alone isn’t enough, especially if the cost of living continues to outpace it. And if you can’t find a place to call home.

Across Newcastle, the Hunter and the Central Coast, we’re seeing essential workers like you – keeping shops running, shelves stocked and businesses open – unable to live in the very communities you’re a part of and serve. Rents are skyrocketing. Commutes are getting longer. And many properties aren’t up to scratch. Housing isn’t just a worker issue: it’s a human right. That’s why in June, we called for major developments in Newcastle to include at least 30 per cent social and affordable housing. And we’re not stopping there. In July, we took that campaign to the NSW Government, calling for at least 30 per cent of all housing built on government-owned land be dedicated to social and affordable housing. Because public land should deliver public benefit, and working people like you deserve a fair chance to live in the communities you help keep running. Because growth without fairness only deepens inequality. A region can’t work if the people who help it run smoothly can’t afford to live in it. Affordable housing isn’t a “nice to have” optional extra – it’s essential for a working community.

Stronger. Together On all these issues, one thing is clear: our strength comes from each other. We’re stronger together. Every unpaid wage recovered, every condition improved, every workplace made fairer, has happened because we stand together. And that collective strength drives change. Not just in your workplace, but across entire industries.

So, what’s next? It’s great to have some wins under our belt. But there’s still more work to do. Wages need to keep up with rising costs of living. But if the past year’s shown us anything, it’s this: when we stand together, we all win. And in the year ahead, we’ll keep doing what we’ve always done: standing up for you and your workmates, and fighting for a future where you’re paid properly, treated fairly, and you and your family can live with dignity in the communities you serve every day.

A Huge Win for Young Workers Above: Branch Secretary David Bliss, Industrial Officer Isobel Carr and Delegate Cooper at the University of Newcastle O-week advocating for fairer pay for young workers

Especially when you pay adult rates for everything: rent, fuel, groceries and other bills.

ISOBEL CARR

INDUSTRIAL OFFICER

Why does this matter? For years, young workers have been treated like adults in every part of life, except when it comes to your pay. At 18, you can vote, drive, drink, and take on adult responsibilities.

Now 18, 19 and 20-year-olds working in retail, fast food and pharmacy will be paid the same adult wage for the same work their older co-workers get.

Until now, an 18-year-old could be paid just 70% of the adult rate, a 19-year-old 80%, and a 20-year-old 90%. That’s a real wage cut for people carrying real responsibilities. What does it mean for you?

How did we get here?

This decision will deliver real wage increases for young workers across the country.

It’s been a long time coming. We’ve been campaigning to scrap junior rates for adults for more than a decade.

This simply didn’t stack up as fair.

Back in 2014, we secured the full adult rate for 20-year-olds. Despite challenges and setbacks along the way, including the disruption caused by COVID, we kept fighting for fairness.

SDA Member News | Winter 2026

Not when you face the same cost-of-living pressures as everyone else.

This is a big win!

Except at work, where many young adults are paid less for the same work – simply because of their age.

If you’re an adult doing adult work, why shouldn’t you be fairly paid an adult wage?

4

Now, thanks to your Union campaigning to scrap unfair junior rates, the Fair Work Commission has agreed that if you’re doing the same work, you should be paid the same. It’s as simple as that.

In 2024, we took our case to the Fair Work Commission. It was simple: there’s no fair reason for an adult doing the same job to be paid less.

Once implemented, if you are 18 years old, you could see an increase to your pay of up to 42%. This isn’t loose change. It’s a meaningful pay rise that will make a real difference in your pay packet week to week.

What won the day?

What happens next?

But this win wasn’t decided by abstract policy arguments alone. It was won because young SDA members spoke about the real impact junior rates have on their everyday lives.

The changes won’t happen immediately. The Commission has set a four-year phase-in period, with rates rising gradually until young workers receive full adult rates.

As one young worker put it,

We’ll stay involved every step of the way, pushing to make sure the changes are implemented properly, as quickly as possible, and that you get the full benefit.

“we work the same shifts, do the same tasks, have the same pressures—but we still have to work more hours just to keep up.” That’s what cut through. What did bosses say? Big business lobbyist groups argued to keep junior rates. Some claimed younger workers are less capable, less independent, or need more supervision. That doesn’t reflect reality. Anyone who’s worked in retail, fast food and pharmacy knows young workers often open and close stores, train others, serve customers, and take on significant responsibility from day one. Many have years of experience by the time they turn 18. The Commission saw through big business retailers and fast food employers and ruled against them.

Above: Workers at Coles Waratah

If you’re covered by an Enterprise Agreement, we’ll keep you posted on how this applies to you. Who won this? You! Most importantly, this win belongs to the people who made it happen. You. It belongs to the young workers who spoke up. To those who gave evidence. To union members who backed the campaign, talked to their coworkers, and stood together.

Above: The team at KFC Glendale

It’s always been fairly simple and simply fair: If you’re an adult, you deserve an adult wage. Now, that will be recognised, and it’s going to make a real difference for working people like you across the country.

More Money In Pocket from 1

DAVID BLISS

BRANCH SECRETARY

Workers like you across Newcastle, the Hunter and the Central Coast are set to benefit from a 4.75% pay rise, following the Fair Work Commission’s 2026 Annual Wage Review decision. This above-inflation rise will lift the pay of millions of workers on minimum and Award rates. Simply put, if you work full-time in retail or fast-food, you will take home about $47 more each week, less tax. And that extra money can really add up over time!

6

SDA Member News | Winter 2026

Importantly, this increase doesn’t just apply to minimum Award rates.

At the same time, big business lobbyists, acting for bosses, push to keep wage rises as low as possible.

Many Enterprise Agreements we’ve negotiated together with you, will also see wage boosts, thanks to provisions we’ve secured to ensure Annual Wage Review outcomes flow through to these Agreements.

This year, we called for an increase that would meaningfully outpace inflation and ease the pressure many workers like you are feeling at the bowser, the checkout, and in every bill you have to pay.

And in most cases, you’ll see these new rates in your payslip from your first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026.

Nearly 8,000 SDA members contributed to this effort by sharing their experiences through our Annual Wage Review survey.

How did this pay rise happen?

Your stories highlighted the challenges of rising costs and helped build a real case for change.

Pay rises like this don’t just happen. They have to be fought for. Every year, we join the ACTU and other unions at the Fair Work Commission to argue for fair wage increases that reflect the real cost of living.

But this didn’t just happen. It wasn’t gifted to you by your employer or the government. It’s because we stood together and made sure your voice was heard.

A Fair Go Starts With waitlists continue to grow. For many of us, the dream of living close to work, friends and family is becoming increasingly difficult to achieve.

DEB DUNNING

BRANCH ASSISTANT SECRETARY

Across Newcastle, the Hunter and the Central Coast, retail, fastfood and warehouse workers like you help keep our communities running every day. Day in, day out, you serve customers, stock shelves, prepare meals, move goods and keep businesses running. Yet increasingly, many essential workers like you are finding it harder to secure something most people take for granted – a safe, affordable place to call home. The housing crisis hurts all of us Australia’s housing crisis is being felt deeply across our region. Rents have risen faster than wages, home ownership is slipping further out of reach for many of us, and social housing

8

SDA Member News | Winter 2026

The rental market has become largely inaccessible for people on low incomes, with virtually no affordable rental options available for those of us earning minimum wage. As a result, many of us are being forced to move further away from our jobs, endure long and costly commutes, or share overcrowded housing. Growth needs to benefit all of us Our region is growing. Major new housing developments are planned across the Newcastle CBD and beyond, including projects that could deliver around 1,000 new homes in Newcastle West alone.

After all, what good are new homes if the people who need them most can’t afford to live in them? As new developments take shape, they need to include homes that are genuinely affordable for the workers like you who keep our community going every day. You deserve to live close to your workplace, family, friends and community. You shouldn’t have to spend hours commuting or face housing insecurity simply because of your job. That’s why we’re calling for significant new investment in social housing, faster delivery of affordable housing, and for major developments to include at least 30 per cent of social and affordable housing.

Increasing housing supply is important, but it’s only part of the solution. We must also address affordability.

This isn’t just about housing. It’s about community This isn’t just a housing issue. It’s a workforce issue, a community issue and an economic issue. A thriving community depends on more than buildings. It depends on the people who work in our shops, supermarkets, warehouses and restaurants. And it depends on communities where people from all walks of life can live, work and contribute. It’s time to ensure Newcastle, the Hunter and the Central Coast remain places where essential workers can build a life, not just earn a living. What can you do to help? Housing affordability affects all of us. Every story shared adds pressure on governments to listen and act.

YOUR ENTERPRISE AGREEMENTS

Bargaining Updates Bargaining continues at Bunnings Negotiations for a new Enterprise Agreement at Bunnings continue. Bargaining is focused on strengthening the achievements already secured in the current Agreement, including the option of a four-day work week, five weeks’ annual leave, paid sick leave for casuals and guaranteed annual wage increases.

BRENDON LOTT INDUSTRIAL OFFICER

As negotiations continue, we’ll keep working to build on these achievements, protect existing entitlements and secure even better pay and conditions for you.

Bargaining is back on the menu at McDonald’s Great news for McDonald’s workers — bargaining is officially back on the menu.

Bargaining returns to Myer after more than a decade of stalled wages and conditions

The Fair Work Commission has approved our application to bargain for a new Enterprise Agreement covering McDonald’s workers.

For the first time in more than a decade, Myer workers will have the opportunity to have a say on their pay and conditions.

This is a huge win and an important step towards securing a new national McDonald’s Agreement that covers workers across both corporate and licensee stores.

The current Myer Enterprise Agreement expired in July 2013. Unitl now, Myer has resisted bargaining for a new agreement that reflects your needs and expectations today.

After more than five years of McDonald’s refusing to negotiate over pay and conditions, you now have a real opportunity to be heard. As bargaining gets underway, our focus will be on securing improvements that exceed the minimum standards, including better pay, stronger conditions and ensuring you get a real say at work. This is an important moment for McDonald’s workers across the country and a positive step towards delivering the fair pay, fair conditions and workplace respect you deserve.

In July, we kicked off bargaining for a brandnew Myer Enterprise Agreement, so you can help shape what comes next. We’re working closely with members and Delegates across Myer stores to develop claims for a modern, fair and relevant agreement that recognises the valuable contribution you make every day and the realities of working in retail today.

Across retail, fast food and warehousing, workers are showing what can be achieved when union members come together, organise in their workplaces and use their collective voice. These campaigns highlight both the challenges ahead and the opportunities we have to keep building power, winning better pay and conditions, and securing a real say at work.

SDA Member News | Winter 2026

The Reject Shop’s substandard • deal gets the thumbs up, but • the work has just started Reject Shop workers have voted in favour of the proposed Enterprise Agreement. While this reflects the majority view, we’re disappointed by the result. We recommended a ‘No Vote’ because we believe you deserved a better deal and could have secured further improvements for you through bargaining. Our concerns included: •

Wages remaining only marginally above the Award

•

Cuts to annual leave entitlements New restrictions on access to personal (sick) leave

Other enterprise bargaining in 2026

Store Managers and Assistant Store Managers being excluded from the Agreement

The next step is for The Reject Shop to seek Fair Work Commission approval of the Agreement. We’ll continue to consult with members and advocate for the best possible outcomes for all workers, including Store Managers and Assistant Store Managers, through the approval process and other avenues available to the Union.

Spotlight on better pay and conditions at Anaconda and Spotlight Workers at Spotlight and Anaconda have stood together and supported our petition to bargain for an Enterprise Agreement covering Spotlight and Anaconda workers across the Central Coast, Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Hunter Valley. Currently, if you work at Spotlight or Anaconda, you’re are covered by the General Retail Industry Award 2020, which sets minimum standards. But through bargaining, we want to give you a greater say in the

pay, conditions and workplace issues that affect you every day. What’s next? We’ve lodged a Majority Support application at the Fair Work Commission. If successful, this means Spotlight and Anaconda must come to the bargaining table to negotiate these important changes.

Agreements approved in 2026

And we’ll make sure you have a strong voice in bargaining, with the issues that matter most to you driving our efforts at every stage of negotiations.

However, the Agreement has now been approved by the Fair Work Commission.

Don’t be “fuelled” by EG Fuel Proposed Agreement EG Fuel workers have voted in favour of a new Proposed Agreement. We recommended a ‘No Vote’ because the proposed Agreement should have delivered much more from a multi-billion-dollar business. It’s a disappointing outcome for many EG Fuel workers.

While the new Agreement falls short of what EG Fuel workers deserve, it does include: •

Protection of your leave entitlements

•

Wage increases in line with the Annual Wage Review each year

•

A retention payment for some workers

The new Agreement will also apply to workers transferring to Ampol and Metro following the ACCC-approved sale of EG Fuel. SDA Member News | Winter 2026

CLASS ACTIONS

Standing Up to Wage Theft Taking national chains to Court You deserve to be paid properly for every hour you work and to receive the rest breaks to which you are legally entitled. That is why the SDA has taken legal action involving McDonald’s, KFC and ALDI over serious allegations about missed paid breaks and unpaid work affecting workers across fast food and retail. What they all have in common is simple: workers, including many young, vulnerable people in their first jobs, should be paid properly and receive the breaks they are legally owed.

McDonald’s: a landmark test case for rest breaks Our Federal Court case against McDonald’s is among the biggest in the fast food industry, affecting more than 300,000 workers. The heart of the case is the allegation that workers were not consistently provided with their paid 10-minute rest breaks, which are required for shifts of four hours or more under enterprise agreements and the Fast Food Industry Award. We argued that these weren’t just isolated incidents but revealed serious systemic issues across the franchise network. That’s now being tested in court, with extensive witness evidence and scrutiny of how compliance is managed across McDonald’s operations. McDonald’s has denied the allegations and is defending the proceedings. Hearings commenced in May and will continue through to October. We’ll keep fighting—and we’ll keep you updated.

KFC: $28.8 million settlement for workers denied breaks In a breakthrough development in March, KFC and more than 80 franchisees agreed to offer $28.8 million to workers who were denied legally required rest breaks between 2017 and 2023. If approved by the Federal Court, the settlement will compensate tens of thousands of current and former workers for breaks they should have received. While the settlement has been reached without an admission of liability, it is still a major win for workers like you; and it sends a clear message across the fast food industry that employers must meet their legal obligations and properly look after their workers.

our class actions

Aldi: underpayment and unpaid work claims Our action against ALDI concerns alleged unpaid work performed before rostered shifts and, for store employees, after rostered shifts. The proceeding alleges that current and former ALDI employees were required to perform work outside their rostered hours without receiving the pay or other benefits required under the applicable enterprise agreements. The claim covers more than 32,000 current and former store and warehouse employees across Australia. The allegations include work performed before shifts, such as preparing stores and equipment for trade, and work performed after shifts by store employees. ALDI has disputed aspects of the claims and maintains that it is committed to complying with its workplace obligations. A proposed settlement has now been reached in the national class action. Subject to final calculations and approval by the Federal Court, the proposed settlement is expected to result in more than $50 million being paid to approximately 32,000 current and former ALDI workers. This includes amounts already paid by ALDI to some employees through its earlier remediation process. If approved, the settlement will provide a process for eligible workers to have their entitlements assessed using ALDI’s records. This result was only possible because SDA members stood together and backed their union to pursue the case against a major international retailer. We encourage all Aldi workers to read the Group Member Notice available here www.sda.au/campaigns/aldi-classaction/

A common theme: systemic issues in low-paid workk While each of these cases involves different employers and specific legal arguments, they share a common theme: allegations that workplace systems, not just individual managers, failed to deliver basic entitlements. Across all three cases, the core issues are: •

Failure to provide legally required paid rest breaks

•

Underpayment for time worked

•

Workplace practices that shift risk and cost onto workers

These aren’t minor technical breaches. They go directly to workers like you being paid for your time and being able to rest during demanding shifts. So, why do these cases matter? These cases matter. Not just because of how big they are, but because of what they represent. The McDonald’s case could set a major legal precedent for employer responsibility across franchise networks. The KFC settlement shows that we can win large-scale compensation for missed entitlements. And the Aldi case targets unpaid work practices which have been a common issue, especially in retail and fast food. Together, they show how legal action can challenge systemic issues affecting hundreds of thousands of people like you. What’s next? As these important cases continue, their impact will go well beyond just these three big employers. Fast food and retail bosses are already under increased scrutiny over their compliance with basic workplace laws. For them, and you, the message is clear: paid breaks and proper wages aren’t “nice to have” - they’re your fundamental legal rights. And for the industry and bosses, these cases should make it clear that when those rights aren’t provided or protected, we’ll fight to ensure that they are - and that you’ll get what you’re owed.

Family and Community Day: A Fair Return for NSW Workers That’s why we’re calling for a new public holiday: Family and Community Day. We’ve already collected thousands of signatures from people who believe workers deserve greater recognition for the contribution they make to our economy and communities.

DEB DUNNING

BRANCH ASSISTANT SECRETARY

NSW workers help drive the nation’s largest economy. Every day, retail, fast food, warehouse and pharmacy workers serve customers, support local communities and keep essential goods and services moving. Whether it’s helping customers on the shop floor, ensuring shelves are stocked, delivering products through supply chains, or providing vital healthcare advice and support, these workers help keep NSW running. Their hard work contributes to NSW generating around 30.8% of Australia’s GDP, yet NSW has fewer public holidays than most other states and territories.

Why Family and Community Day matters Public holidays are about more than having a day off. They recognise that the people who create our state’s prosperity deserve to share in its benefits. Previous generations fought for annual leave, weekends and public holidays because they understood that workers need time to live, not just work. Family and Community Day would be a modern recognition of the contribution workers make every day. Productivity starts with people Retail, fast food, warehouse and pharmacy workers understand the demands of shift work, customer service, physical labour and balancing work with family responsibilities. Many work evenings, weekends and public holidays to ensure communities can access the goods, services and care they need. Nobody can perform at their best without opportunities to recharge. Healthy, engaged workers are the foundation of productive workplaces. Giving people time away from work isn’t just good for wellbeing. It helps workers return refreshed, motivated and ready to contribute. That’s why Family and Community

Day is an investment in people, communities and our economy. Rest, reset and reconnect A public holiday provides an opportunity to: Rest by taking a break from the demands of work and everyday life. Reset by gaining perspective, recharging and returning to work with renewed energy and focus. Reconnect with family, friends and the communities that make our lives richer and more meaningful. These aren’t luxuries. They’re an important part of maintaining healthy lives, strong communities and productive workplaces. A fair share of success When productivity grows and the economy succeeds, workers should share in the rewards. Family and Community Day is a practical way of recognising the enormous contribution retail, warehouse and pharmacy workers make to NSW’s success. It acknowledges that economic prosperity is created by people and that those people deserve time to enjoy the benefits of what they help build. We need your support Sign our petition and add your voice. Together, we can secure a public holiday that recognises the contribution of NSW workers and ensures the benefits of a strong economy are shared by the people who make it possible. It’s time for Family and Community Day.

Winning for Mem A win when it mattered most When Natasha’s workplace closed, she was told her only option was to move into a casual role. That would have meant losing job security and missing out on redundancy pay. Natasha contacted her Union for support. Through determined advocacy, her rights were upheld and she secured the redundancy payment she was owed. Natasha’s story is a powerful reminder that when you are an SDA member, you do not have to face difficult workplace changes alone.

A better fit. A better outcome When Jennifer was faced with roster changes that didn’t align with her personal circumstances, she turned to her Union for support. With her Union by her side, Jennifer was able to make her voice heard and negotiate a roster that protected her contracted hours while keeping her in the department that worked best for her circumstances. With strong union representation, Jennifer was able to raise her concerns, push back on changes that did not meet her needs, and secure conditions that worked for her.

Delegate in action: helping to be heard SDA Delegate Jackii stepped up for her teammate Tracey and helped make sure her needs were taken seriously. Tracey needed her own earpiece for health reasons. bers, Every Day! A pay win worth celebrating When Shakye noticed she wasn’t being paid correctly under the contract she had signed, she knew something wasn’t right. With support and advice from her Union, Shakye took action to address the issue and worked to make sure her pay matched the conditions in her contract. The result? A fantastic outcome, with Shakye securing around $3,600 in backpay for the hours she had worked. Shakye’s win shows why it pays to know your rights – and why having the SDA in your corner can make all the difference.

More hours, more stability, more security Amie had been regularly working hours in excess of her contracted 20 hours a week. With the assistance of her Union Delegate, Emily, Amie put forward a request to increase her contracted hours. The result was a fantastic win — her part-time contract was increased from 20 to 25 hours per week. For Amie, that means more stability and an extra $7,000 a year in guaranteed income.

A toast to collective action When Liquorland workers Jane and Phillip were told their core contracted hours would be reduced, they knew it could mean a significant hit to their income. But before agreeing and signing anything, they took action. With their union in their corner, Jane and Phillip successfully challenged the proposed reduction and retained their core contracted hours. Together, Jane and Phillip protected more than $11,000 a year in combined earnings. This is a reminder that when members stand together, they can protect their hours, income and job security.

Don’t know? Q + A WITH YOUR INFORMATION OFFICERS | ZAK AND CLAUDIA

WORKERS COMPENSATION

PAID SUPERANNUATION

I injured myself at work last night after tripping over a pallet. My employer has arranged physiotherapy sessions for me to attend. What are my rights?

What super should I be paid and when should it be paid by my employer?

If you are injured at work, you have the right to make a workers’ compensation claim. Seek first aid immediately and report the injury as soon as possible so there is an official record. You should notify the manager on duty as soon as possible, preferably within 24 hours. The manager must record the injury in the workplace injury register, including your name, the date of the injury, the type of injury and how the injury occurred Remember: you are entitled to a copy of this report. See your own doctor and ask for a NSW Certificate of Capacity. Give the certificate to your employer and advise that you wish to make a workers compensation claim, rather than relying solely on treatment arranged by your employer. Making a workers compensation claim helps protect your rights if you need time off work, medical treatment and ongoing support during your recovery It also ensures that the workers’ compensation insurer, not just your employer, is involved in decisions about your injury and recovery. Ask your employer for the name of the workers’ compensation insurer, the insurer’s contact details and your claim number. Keep copies of all certificates, receipts, reports and other relevant documents. If your employer offers physiotherapy or other treatment, you do not have to agree to participate before obtaining your own medical advice. You have the right to see your own treating doctor, make a workers compensation claim and receive independent medical advice about appropriate treatment. You also have the right to choose your own doctor and rehabilitation provider. If an Injury Management Plan is developed, participate in the process and keep records of any decisions or agreements. Need more information or assistance? Call the Information Hotline on 1300 732 4357.

Under the Superannuation Guarantee (SG), employers must contribute 12% of your ordinary time earnings into your nominated superannuation fund. Ordinary time earnings generally include your regular pay, annual leave, personal leave and most allowances, but usually do not include overtime payments. Super is generally calculated on these ordinary earnings. From 1 July 2026, employers must pay your superannuation contributions every payday. Employers can no longer pay superannuation contributions quarterly. You are generally entitled to super if: •

You are 18 years or older and earn ordinary time earnings.

•

You are under 18 years old and work 30 hours or more in a week.

•

You are employed on a full-time, part-time or casual basis.

•

From 1 July 2025, superannuation contributions are also payable on Government-funded Paid Parental Leave.

Check your pay slips regularly to make sure your super contributions are being paid correctly. Because super is now paid with each payday, money reaches your super fund sooner and has more time to benefit from compound earnings, helping to grow your retirement savings over the long term. If you would like to find out more, call the Information Hotline on 1300 732 4357.

Just Ask! CUSTOMER ABUSE The abuse from customers is getting worse, how do I let my manager know and get support when it happens? Customer abuse should never be tolerated. Everyone has the right to be treated with dignity and respect at work, and no one deserves to be subjected to abuse, aggression, or violence. No one deserves a serve. Your employer has a responsibility to provide a safe workplace and to take reasonable steps to eliminate or minimise risks to your health and safety. Measures that may help prevent or manage customer abuse include: •

Banning aggressive or abusive customers from the workplace

•

Providing security personnel in higher-risk locations

•

Restricting service methods where necessary, such as drive-through or contactless service options

•

Displaying clear signage that communicates a zerotolerance approach to abusive behaviour and sets expectations for respectful customer conduct

•

Training managers and supervisors to support workers and effectively de-escalate abusive or violent situations

•

Providing workers with training on recognising, responding to, and reporting customer abuse and violence

If you experience abuse, threats, or violence from a customer, report the incident as soon as possible to your manager and record it through your workplace reporting system or incident portal. Reporting customer abuse is important. It creates a formal record of the incident, helps identify patterns of behaviour, and supports efforts to improve workplace protections for you and your colleagues. If you are unsure how to report an incident, or if you are concerned about customer abuse or violence in your workplace, contact the Information Hotline on 1300 732 4357 for advice and support.

Spotlight on super •

GERARD DWYER

SDA NATIONAL SECRETARY

Superannuation was once a wealth management tool. A tool to stop workers from changing jobs. A benefit of employment for those in management and the public sector. But the union movement changed that. We made it universal in the 1980s and 1990s when super was put into awards and into the taxation system as a Superannuation Guarantee. But super is not as universal as it could be. The Australian Parliament can and must strengthen superannuation to ensure decent retirements for Australians and protect retirement savings. Progress has been strong: •

•

22

Super is due to be paid at the same time as wages from 1 July 2026. We call this Payday Super and it will help in preventing super theft. Super is paid on top of wages at a minimum rate of 12% since 2025, This is called the Super Guarantee. Unions can and do negotiate for super above this, like payment on unpaid parental leave to reduce the Gender Super Gap. SDA Member News | Winter 2026

Super is paid on earnings under $450 per calendar month since 2022 – this change removed one of many exceptions to the ‘universality’ of super. Super should be paid on every dollar a person earns, even if that is from several jobs with low numbers of hours.

One of the most shocking and unfair exceptions to the universality of super is also age discrimination. Introduced in 1992, it is only since 1997 that super has been paid to those over 65 years of age. In 2013, those aged over 75 got super. These changes were good but there remains major age discrimination in the superannuation system – for young workers! To get super, under 18s need to work at least 30 hours a week. This means you sometimes get it and sometimes don’t, and the process associated with the inconsistency sets you up for lack of engagement and indeed distrust of superannuation. Not only do young workers miss out on super, young workers miss out on the compounding interest. A typical teenager who works for at least two years loses almost $2,200. That is $10,000 less (in today’s dollars) at retirement. Compound interest – where you earn interest on both your initial deposit and on the interest that you’ve already earned – has a snowball effect and is part of the magic of superannuation.

And that $2,200 would make significantly less if invested later. The magic of compound interest is also in the long term nature of the investment. And given the volatility of AI disruption, the conflict in the middle east, and many other pressures on Australians, it can be tempting to withdraw or switch. Firstly, get advice before you do that. Secondly, during periods like this, it’s important to remember that super is invested for the long term. So, for example, it’s a big system with cash-like investments it can draw on at times like this to buy things when they are low. It’s also diversified. So, it has unlisted assets including private equity and infrastructure which performed strongly over the last quarter. That means that the share market and bonds might go down and up, but the impact of that is offset.

Rest – the super fund for retail, warehousing and fastfood – has plenty of great information on their website including an article on “Why does my super balance go up or down”, and quarterly updates on the market. You can access these via the app, but also their website which is at rest.com.au.
