Welcome to our production of THE WIZ! This is SCYT's first time doing this amazing show! Having done THE WIZARD OF OZ several times, we are excited to try this fun version of this wonderful story. This marks our 12th production in Orange with the same leadership team of Dane Morris, Jessica Ordaz and I...plus our 10th anniversary show last fall! I am thrilled to have the honor of being part of such a great theater family that we have grown into here in Orange! This spring in addition to THE WIZ, we just finished a production of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS in April that was fantastic, and next week SCYT has a huge production of JOSEPH at the Dream Center in Los Angeles at the historic 3500 seat Angelus Temple. God is doing awesome things, and it’s exciting to be a part of it! A big thank you to Dane Morris and Jessica Ordaz for all their continued outstanding work with our casts! Dane is our director/musical director and Jessica our choreographer, and they are the BEST at what they do! We congratulate Dane on his graduation from Chapman University this month with a double music major! Also a big thank you to Judi Griffin for all her amazing help as our lead parent for our Orange casts, and to both Todd & Judi for all they do for our programs, sets, backstage, you name it! And a HUGE thank you to ALL our amazing parents who help with all the details behind the scenes to help their kids shine on stage!

This summer we are offering a summer show and a summer camp you won't want to miss! Our summer show is "HELLO DOLLY" and kicks off in late May and performs in early August. Our summer one week camp is "A SALUTE TO THE MUSIC OF WICKED" and will be all musical numbers from the megahit Broadway show "WICKED" and will be offered here in Orange a full week in July. Thank you for supporting SCYT today, sit back and enjoy a wonderful journey with us as we "Ease on Down the Road" with Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tinman and Lion in a new different take on the story of a girl who travels to Oz to meet the "Wiz"!!! DANA MORRIS

Today’s presentation of "The Wiz" is in cooperation with the publishers rights from SAMUEL FRENCH INC Music Library. The Composer and Lyricist is Charlie Smalls and the Librettist is William F. Brown. The Wiz premiered on Broadway Jan. 5, 1975 and later was made into a motion picture in 1978 starring Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell and Richard Pryor.

The Wiz: The Super Soul Musical "Wonderful Wizard of Oz" is a musical with music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls and book by William F. Brown. It is a retelling of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in the context of African American culture. The play opened on October 21, 1974 at the Morris A. Mechanic Theatre in Baltimore, Maryland and moved to the Majestic Theatre (not the same Majestic Theatre that played The Wizard of Oz in 1903, which was on Columbus Circle, where Time-Warner Center now stands) with a new cast on January 5, 1975 . The 1975 Broadway production won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The musical was an early example of Broadway's mainstream acceptance of works with an all-black cast. The musical has had revivals in New York, London, San Diego and the Netherlands, and an Off Broadway Encores! concert version was staged in June 2009. A film adaptation was released in 1978. Sydney Lumet’s film version of the popular Broadway musical retells the events of L. Frank Baum's classic novel through the eyes of a young AfricanAmerican kindergarten teacher who's "never been below 125th Street." Leaving a large family dinner to chase her dog into a snowstorm, Dorothy (Diana Ross) is swept up by a cyclone and transplanted to the land of Oz -which looks suspiciously like a skewed version of the run-down Manhattan of the late '70s. Landing on top of the Wicked Witch of the East, the puzzled Dorothy is greeted by munchkins who peel themselves from a graffiti mural and sing to her about the Wiz (Richard Pryor), a powerful wizard living in Emerald City who can help her get home. On her journey down the yellow brick road, she encounters a garbage-stuffed scarecrow (Michael Jackson) in a junkyard, a broken-down tin man (Nipsey Russell) caught in the decay of an old amusement park, and a cowardly lion (Ted Ross) posing as a stone statue outside a museum. The quartet tangles with a subway station that comes to life, a poppy den, and a gaggle of motorcycle henchman on their way to the Wiz -- who orders them to kill the Wicked Witch of the West (a sweatshop tyrant) before he will grant them their wishes.
