edding is the northern California basecamp of recreation, resting below Mount Shasta, Lassen Volcanic National Park, and the Trinity Alps. MUST-SEE ICONS SUNDIAL BRIDGE VisitRedding.com/SundialBridge This one-of-a-kind, glass decked pedestrian bridge serves as an incredible entrance to Redding’s Sacramento River National Recreation Trail. The unique design of the bridge was conceived by world-renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. It is the first bridge of its kind in the United States, and is the tallest working sundial in the world! The massive 217’ pylon leans due north and functions as the gnomon of a sundial, casting its giant shadow on a garden-bordered dial plate at the bridge’s north end. The tall pylon and cable stays allow the bridge to avoid the nearby sensitive salmon spawning habitat. Receptions under the bridge are available.

STATE & NATIONAL PARKS WHISKEYTOWN NATIONAL RECREATION AREA nps.gov/whis This beautiful park features cool rugged canyons, forests, year round streams, and of course, Whiskeytown Lake. Sandy beaches, marinas, camping facilities, excellent sailing and fishing, plus numerous marked hiking and mountain biking trails make this park a favorite for visitors and locals alike. Situated on the south shore of the lake is a memorial to President John F. Kennedy, commemorating his dedication of the dam in 1963, shortly before his assassination.

Whiskeytown has four major waterfalls you can visit year-round. One of these– the 220-foot cascading Whiskeytown Falls – was recently rediscovered, making it the region’s tallest waterfall.

SHASTA STATE HISTORIC PARK parks.ca.gov Old Shasta’s historic brick buildings mark the location where the area’s “Queen City” once stood during California’s gold mining days.

The park features an excellent museum that is still home to the original jail and gallows. The Litsch General Store and the Blumb Bakery have been restored to their original condition. Other historical sites include one of the oldest Masonic Lodges in California.

The Pacific Crest Trail also passes through the park.

Access through the park is limited during winter months, but excellent cross-country skiing is available, as well as interpretive snowshoe tours led by park rangers. Hundreds of miles of hiking, biking, equestrian, and off-road vehicle trails have been developed within a 15 mile radius of downtown Redding.

The Sacramento River Trail, which crosses the world famous Sundial Bridge in the heart of Redding, and the Sacramento River Rail Trail, which extends north all the way to Shasta Dam and sits alongside an historic abandoned railway, have both been designated as National Recreation Trails in the National Trail System.

The areas surrounding Shasta Lake as well as the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area both offer abundant unpaved trails that are very popular with single track bicyclists.

The mountains surrounding this growing river city—home of the American Trails organization—also offer endless opportunities for great trail experiences. Castle Crags State Park offers unmatched views of Mt. Shasta, and Lassen Volcanic National Park has numerous scenic trails that take visitors to bubbling mudpots, boiling lakes, and majestic vistas.
