From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community.

changes every year–two members replaced in each of two consecutive years, three new members in the third year, so that all seven members are replaced in each three-year cycle. While not required by any governing document, it has been common practice for each new Board to develop a set of goals for the coming year. For the past two years, and now again for the current year, our first goal has been to seek a super majority vote (at least five out of seven) on motions brought before the Board. If it is evident from the discussion that there is significant opposition to a proposal, we go back to the drawing board and try to develop a policy that would address concerns and generate more widespread support among the Board members. The thinking was that, if it could be avoided, it was not appropriate to impose on the community a policy with only narrow support on the Board.

Sometimes hard decisions must be made despite the lack of wide agreement, and the history of SCOV reveals that there have been several significant 4-3 decisions by past Boards. That has not been the case recently as, over the last two years, all decisions by the Board have been unanimous with just two exceptions, one a 6-1 vote and the other a 5-1 vote with one Director absent. I do not imply that the Board is infallible, and it is certainly recognized that not all in the community would agree with some of those decisions, nor do I mean to imply that such unanimity has not characterized the work of other Boards in the past. I think it should be recognized that unanimous, or near unanimous, support within the Board reflects a sincere effort to work toward sound policies that merit a consensus, not only within the Board but, one might hope, within our SCOV community.

Thunderstorm Safety— Avoiding a Lightning Strike Warm weather usually means fun in the sun, but summer heat also can bring severe weather. Monsoons and threatening thunderstorms often loom large on summer afternoons so it’s important to be prepared for downpours and accompanying lightning, which can strike outdoors or indoors. Consider the following suggestions when planning both outdoor and indoor events this summer to reduce the risk of a lightning strike.

• Watch the weather. Pay attention to your local weather forecast before participating in outdoor activities. If there’s a chance of thunderstorms, consider rescheduling or moving events indoors. If that’s not possible, have an emergency plan in place in case a severe storm rolls in and designate a sufficient nearby structure as an emergency shelter.

• Stay inside. If severe thunderstorms are imminent, go indoors and wait until they pass. Safe, enclosed shelters include homes, schools, offices, shopping malls and vehicles with hard tops and closed windows. Open structures and spaces do not provide adequate protection.

• Duck and crouch. If you’re caught outside during a severe storm, it’s important to crouch low on the ground, tuck your head and cover your ears to help protect yourself from harm. Do not lie down; lightning strikes can produce extremely strong electrical currents that run along the top of the ground, and laying horizontally increases electrocution risk.

• Turn off faucets. During a thunderstorm, lightning can sometimes be conducted through the plumbing. Avoid any type of contact with running water, including bathing, showering, and washing your hands, dishes, or clothes.

• Turn off electronics. All electrical appliances—televisions, computers, laptops, gaming systems, stoves, and more—that are plugged into an electrical outlet could carry a current from a lightning strike. Surge protectors will reduce the risk of damaging electronics.

• Stay away from windows. Not only is lightning a threat, but high winds and hail create flying debris that could be harmful during a thunderstorm. Close all windows and doors and keep away from them.

We have lightning detectors at both buildings where pools are located. When the lightning gets within 15 miles, the detectors will sound off. Monitors will close the pool/spa and deck areas in accordance with National Weather Service guidelines. Pools will reopen half an hour after the lightning has stopped.

Do You Have all the Answers?

A

s people with kids and grandkids know, they are asked many questions: Mom, why is the sky blue?

Dad, why does the sun rise in the east and set in the west? Grandma or Grandpa, do you know anything about pickleball in SCOV? I’m not so sure about the answers to the first two questions, but if your grandkids ask you the last question, here is a helpful guide.

What is pickleball? The simple answer is that pickleball is a game for fun, a game to be social and a game for all ages and abilities. It’s a game for everyone.

The official answer: Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis into one game. Two or four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite material to hit a perforated polymer ball over a net.

The sport shares features of other racquet sports, the dimensions and layout of a badminton court, and a net and rules somewhat like tennis, with several modifications.

Pickleball came to be in 1965 on Bainbridge Island near Seattle, Washington. As an answer to bored and restless kids, a vacationing family Jack Welch photos decided to create a new game. This game used table tennis paddles, a wiffleball and a badminton court. Some 50 years later, the game of pickleball has evolved into what it is today How popular is pickleball? According to USAPA.org, there are over 15,000 pickleball courts with over 2.5 million participants and growing.

ing. This year, we are celebrating 10 years of pickleball in SCOV. Our first two courts were constructed in 2009.

Three courts were added in 2015. Our club currently has proposed the construction of three additional courts. The popularity and growth of pickleball in SCOV mirrors the trend seen nationwide.

What are the benefits of playing pickleball? Exercising and staying fit at any age are an important part of a daily routine.

Studies show that the best way to ensure health and longevity is to engage in physical activity.

As a person ages, a natural loss of muscle mass occurs. Running on the court and carrying your body weight is considered a weight bearing exercise. You will be building strength while playing pickleball.

Playing pickleball gives your heart a healthy workout. While running from one side of the court to the other, you will be boosting your cardio health.

Pickleball can reduce the stress in our lives. Whether you win or lose the game, nothing beats the release of those feel-good chemicals (endorphins) in our brains.

Pickleball allows us to meet and interact with others. Regular social interaction has been proven to reduce the development of dementia.

formed.

It starts by rooms being reserved for various events such as a club event, Board meeting, golf lunch, etc. These reservations occur with our Facilities Coordinator, Coco Sullivan.

She is the keeper of the calendar. When you meet with her, she reserves the room and helps you get it set up just right with all the necessary support to make your event go off without a hitch. This is when the magic begins…the calendar is web based. Because of this, it integrates with our website.

Events appear in many different formats across the website.

Take the home page for example. At the bottom of the page there are three different lists: HAPPENINGS (the fun stuff), FITNESS (the healthy stuff) and BOD & COMMITTEES (the stuff that keeps this place running smoothly). Each of these show a segment of the calendar tailored for that interest. But wait, there’s more. If you select NEWS and then CALENDAR, you’ll see a monthly view of the fun stuff and then there’s the button to the big calendar (Click here for all events). If you want to be impressed by all that’s going on in SCOV, click that button (especially in February or March… oh my!). But wait, there’s more. In each building there is a digital bulletin board. Each day, specific to that building, the calendar is displayed to let our residents know what’s happening in that building.

Take a moment to check out the calendar and enjoy the many ways to experience the active adult lifestyle of SCOV.

Plans are in motion to bring you a great line up of shows from TAD Management this year and into 2021. There is always something to do in SCOV. Why not join a club or sport and enjoy all that SCOV has to offer?

At times, filling out forms and meeting with the Community Services Coordinator for potential changes to the exterior of your homes must seem inconvenient. However, that extra step is part of why our neighborhood looks fresh and upgraded.

Consistent attention to your landscaping is showing in our monthly Courtesy Notice statistics. Fewer residents who receive a Courtesy Notice receive a follow up Notice of Violation. Most quickly address the noted item, and it shows in the overall appearance of the grounds and exterior repair of the houses.

You probably already know that reading is good for the brain and can slow down late-life cognitive decline. Also, reading an average of 30 minutes a day may extend one’s life by almost two years. But how is digital reading affecting the brain? Maryanne Wolf explores that question in her new book Reader, Come Home. She explores how reading on digital devices, where we process information quickly and in brief bursts, may be altering the circuitry in the brain. Most worrisome is how this may affect the development of critical thinking and empathy. Find her book in our library and read it for recommendations on teaching young children to be “biliterate”: learning to read first in physical book format and using that knowledge to move on to using screens effectively.

Due to the timing of our annual audit and a transition to new financial software, the financial statement for July is not included in the September Tipster. Financial statements can be found on our website www.scovaz. com and in our SCOV Library.

The complete audited financials will be available on the website and in the SCOV Library before October 31 as mandated by the Bylaws. A copy will also be available in the Administration offices.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Signs Your Shoes Are Dead Most people wait till their shoes look bad before replacing them. By that time, they have been toast for many months.

These signs of long-dead shoes should prompt you to replace them immediately: • The sole tread pattern is worn down. Many shoes now are purposefully made so a different color shows through when the sole is worn to alert you to this.

• The heel is worn down more on one side than the other, sometimes to the point that the shoe is leaning to one side.

• There are wrinkles on the side or bottom of the sole from breakdown of the support and cushioning. The uppers are broken down around the ankle.

What’s wrong with wearing dead shoes? They are dead because they no longer provide good support and cushioning. Lack of cushioning and support can lead to shin splints, heel spurs, plantar fasciitis, Iliotibial band syndrome and stress fractures.

Where and how you wear down the soles and heels of your shoes can tell a shoe fit expert what kind of shoes you should buy. Bring your old shoes with you when you buy new shoes. They can be indicators that you overpronate, have a neutral gait or supinate.

Is it too hot out, yet you want to remain active? Consider walking indoors at the AFC. Indoor walking is a great way to stay fit while enjoying the company of others. There are designated times for indoor walking on Mondays and Fridays, 1-2 PM, AFC Rooms 1 & 2. So, make a date with a friend or loved one, and enjoy the walk in the cool of the building. You are also welcome to walk any time when there are no classes in these rooms. Please check the fitness class schedule. The Active Health Committee wants you to remain active and healthy.

As we switch from a data gathering phase to a design phase, we will be using outside resources to explore various options for the renovation. Some of these options are beyond the scope of our charter, so we felt it would be prudent to discuss this with the Board of Directors prior to committing time and funds. We will announce the resumption of our general meetings in “This Week in SCOV.” If you have questions, suggestions or comments, please continue to submit them to acrc@suncityorovalley.com. We may not be meeting, but we are still working.

The AFC Advisory Committee will reconvene on Wednesday, October 2.

The Fitness Center is one of the many gems in our community, from the top-tier class offerings to the high-end equipment that are provided for all residents. When using the equipment, it is highly advisable to wipe down the contact areas, both before and after, with the sanitizing wipes provided. This will help in minimizing possible transfer of germs and viruses.

Familiarize yourself with the guidelines for landscaping projects and features such as waterfalls, fountains, exterior lighting, sun shades, awnings, walls, fences and placement of outdoor furniture.

If you live in Green Tree or Ember Ridge Sub-Associations, check your specific requirements. Call the Town of Oro Valley to see if building, plumbing or electrical permits are required for your project. Look for exterior lighting fixtures that support a Dark Sky (www.darksky.org) so you and your neighbors can enjoy the stars at night. ARC members are happy to discuss your projects with you. You are always welcome to attend a meeting to see how the process works before you begin your project.

New residents are unlisted by default. This includes those who move within SCOV. Renters are included if they are long-term year-round residents.

The monthly SCOV Resale Report is used to update the directory database. Those who have sold their homes are removed from the database, and the new owners are added as unlisted. To be listed in the directory, you must complete the online form “To change your directory listing…” or fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center.

You can choose to be listed and still have address, phones, or emails unlisted in either the paper book or the online directory. Email addresses are not published in the paper book.

The Finance-Budget Committee and staff members will continue reviewing policies, annual distribution and allocation of Association resources to the Association’s investments and asset reserve, capital, contingency and capital contribution funds. All Board requests for the recommendations from the committee will be completed prior to the Board’s December Study Session. The General Manager and Controller will present the budget for fiscal year 20202021 to the committee for review and comments in February and March. The committee’s goal will be to complete the Board’s requests and submit recommendations concerning the 2020-2021 budget for the Board’s April study session.

Plans are under way for The Views Restaurant (TVR) and Pro Shop to more proactively join in the Community Assistance Committee’s SCOV-wide recycling program. The funds support Loan Room needs.

This was part of a recommendation prepared by Kim Bone, one of our TVR bussers. Our library in SCOV is superb and not just because of the huge array and variety of books, movies and audio books.

It’s because of the people who make it run. We have a cadre of dedicated volunteers who are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. We also have a crackerjack librarian, Kate Cusumano, who has elevated the quality, variety and currency of our collection. In addition, she organizes monthly author talks held in the Auditorium and free to residents. Kate is responsive to patrons’ wants and needs in the library. Have you heard about a new book you’d like to read or a movie you’d like to see? Write it down on the wish list that Kate keeps at the front of the library. She tries to order as many of the wish list items as she can.

How can we afford to have these wonderful services? All of the funds used for those things are provided from fundraising by Friends of the Library (FOL). It’s easy to help: join FOL, participate in events like the Home Tour in February, buy a book from the sale racks, donate books and donate money. We all have a part in making our library the superb place it is. Thanks from the Friends.

The Loan Room is a free service for the residents of SCOV. Many of the items we loan are donated by residents when they no longer need them. We make every effort to keep these items in good condition, but they are used and occasionally problems will develop. We ask that you tell us when there are issues, and we will try to make corrections.

Beginning September 1, 2019, all residents will need to sign a Liability Waiver form to check out items. This waiver only has to be signed once and will be kept on file to cover future check-outs. Liability Waiver forms will be available in the Loan Room beginning in September and can be read and filled out prior to checking out items. Please be sure to bring your current SCOV card as the information will be reviewed to be sure it is current during this process. We will make this new procedure as painless as possible for all concerned.

Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 It Happened—Finally Monsoon rains finally arrived and brought new growth of many weeds. Please make every effort to stay ahead of the weed situation in your yard, especially desert broom and spurge. Spurge is the low-growing, fast spreading little weed that seems to take over an entire block in just days. Spurge can be hand-pulled before it blooms, but may require spraying in order to get rid of it. For every one that is pulled, two more grow when their tiny seeds drop. Look at the cracks in your sidewalk, driveway and where the cement meets the asphalt. That is where spurge is often found. (Photo on page 18.)

Rain brings tree growth, too. Trees must be kept trimmed more than seven feet above sidewalks, may not overhang any street by more than two feet and should not block visibility of street or stop signs. Most bean pods are down now and should be removed from the ground in your yard.

Lorie was corralled into joining the Posse by her dad who asked (told) her “she wanted to join the Posse, didn’t she?” Actually, Lorie went out on her first patrol

the night before she closed on her home. George and Lorie are our only father and daughter Posse board members.

Together they co-chair Squad D, and Lorie is the recorder for the Posse. As recorder, Lorie keeps an accurate record of Posse members, assigns new members to squads and tracks the number of patrols each member does during the year. Lorie says her father continues to serve as he enjoys it and feels he’s helping the community. Also, it’s become a habit for him. She continues to serve because she also feels she’s supporting her community as well as her dad.

How great is that? Two more wonderful SCOV residents and Posse volunteers who are making a difference. Six hours a year, two 3-hour patrols, is all the commitment we ask. Join us. You are wanted.

What’s in a name? The header bar above is the name in our charter issued by the SCOV BOD. We adopted the acronym PREVAIL (Preserve Real Estate Values and Inhance Lifestyle). We are often referred to simply as the views committee.

This summer, only three or four permanent improvement requests to the ARC resulted in 100 foot notification letters being sent to neighbors for possible view impediment. Good news: None of these situations resulted in any views being impeded. Bad news: The members of PREVAIL who were here this summer had no opportunities to apply its model for view preservation. PREVAIL will resume meeting Wednesday, September 18, 2 PM, WC3. At this meeting we will determine a course of action to test our model for fairness, accuracy and consistency before moving on to views impeded by vegetation. Welcome back to seasonal residents.

Semiannual inspections of SCOV facilities are one of the Properties Committee’s primary functions. September is the time of year we plant the winter ryegrass on the golf course for the upcoming season. It requires the assistance of all residents to ensure they don’t drive golf carts or walk on the golf course while the new grass seed is being planted and watered. The golf course will be closed during overseeding starting Monday, September 23 and will open for play Monday, October 14.

The September Pro Shop hours will be 6 AM -5 PM through Sunday, September 23. We will be closed September 2425 and reopen September 26-October 13 for limited hours, 9 AM-Noon. During overseeding, the driving range will be open, and practice balls will be hit off mats only, beginning September 26.

Now is an excellent time to purchase a range card. You can buy 20 large buckets for $150 and save $2.50 per bucket or 50 large buckets for $300, a savings of $4 per bucket off the regular price.

Once we open for play on Monday, October 14, all golf carts must remain on the cart path only for a couple of weeks. The projected date for golf carts to start driving on the grass is Tuesday, October 29.

Our 2nd Annual Run the Views 5K is on Saturday, October 12. You can choose to walk or run the course and experience the golf course from a whole different perspective. The event will take place on holes 1-10. All interested participants may sign up on our website www.theviewsgolfclub.com.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063 The month of September marks a turning point in the maintenance of the golf course.

Starting in the spring the focus of maintenance was growing and establishing Bermuda grass while eliminating the overseeded ryegrass for the summer months. In September, maintenance practices change to slowing down the growth of Bermuda grass and starting to prepare for overseeding and the return of the winter ryegrass.

The Bermuda grass growth is slowed down with growth regulators, a reduction of fertilization, and cultural practices like verticutting. This process slowly reduces the thickness of the Bermuda grass canopy to allow for better infiltration of ryegrass seed. All of the work performed during the summer is to not only provide a great playing surface, but also to provide a good seedbed for overseeding.

This summer we had a very good transition from ryegrass to Bermuda grass which resulted in only a few areas requiring repairs. The #2 fairway required the most repairs, so it will be the only fairway not overseeded this fall. This fairway has been skipped a few times over the years because the way it is shaped allows all the water to drain to the middle of the fairway. Salts travel with the water and get concentrated from about 175 yards to the approach with the worst area being at the 150 pole. Not overseeding this hole will allow the Bermuda grass to fully recover going into next summer.

The Golf Advisory Committee (GAC) will resume monthly meetings Wednesday, September 4.

The GAC is the communication link among golfers, administration, management and the SCOV Board of Directors. We welcome you to come to our meetings and express your questions/concerns to our committee members so they might be discussed, and recommendations can be made to our Board.

For those of you who have been unfortunate enough to drive your ball into a sand bunker, you know our course has new rakes. We want to thank our golf leagues who provided the contribution for the purchase of those rakes with the bigger rake heads and great handles. Don’t forget to rake the sand bunkers after you make your shot.

Another important issue is to remember to replace your fairway divots. When using divot mix, try to avoid over or under filling divots. Under filling a divot can result in a depression that affects golf ball lie. However, over filling a divot can result in damage to mowing equipment and create poor playing conditions. To properly fill a divot, bend over and directly place divot mix until it is even with the base of the adjacent turf. Use your foot to compact and level the divot mix to help encourage new grass growth.

Overseeding of our course will begin Monday, September 23, reopening on Monday, October 14.

Here’s a story about a rewarding volunteer experience from Vistoso Helpful Hands: “Thanks to the Sun City Vistoso Community Foundation for your continued grant support which pays for our dispatch cell phone. We have been helping neighbors for over 22 years, providing temporary assistance like transportation, errands, caregiver relief, paperwork organization, light yard/housekeeping, call check and animal care.

“And speaking of animal care, I thought you might be interested in this win-win outcome, passed along to me from one of our recent clients. She needed someone to walk her dog after a temporary disabling accident.

Volunteer, Nate Norris, pictured here with Bailey, came to the rescue for 3 weeks. Everyday at 7 AM, he arrived at her door with a cheery greeting, ready to walk Bailey. This also involved jogging back to keep up with Bailey’s return, who always made a beeline home to his owner. Not only did he bond with the dog; the client calls Nate a ‘god-send.’ Nate’s response was, ‘This experience Nate Norris and Bailey turned my life around. I am now out of the house every morning for my walk and jog.’ That’s the joy of volunteering.

“Nate is one of 46 of your neighbors who volunteer with VHH to help others, when the unexpected happens. We serve approximately 4-5 clients a month, some asking how to find longer-term paid resources for things like home health care and personal services for hire.”

The picture is a recent sculpture completed by Laurie Lichaa.

Laurie describes how she assembled the figure. “I baked the hat on his head which stuck to the head when it baked. The cowboy was baked first without the cape. Then I shaped the cape, used liquid clay to adhere it in place. Balled up aluminum was placed between the cowboy’s body and the cape to allow the cape to flair. Once baked and cooled, the aluminum ball was removed.”

Several people have stopped in to visit with our group and mentioned that they have hooked a rug in their past. Upon further discussion, Latch hooking vs. tapestry rug hooking it becomes evident that they are referring to latch hooking. Latch hooking uses a different tool and material. In the picture, on the left is a latch hook.

The material used is 2½ inch pieces of yarn. In tapestry/rug hooking we use the tool on the right that looks like a crochet hook in a wooden handle and use strips of various types of material.

We applaud the amazing food drive this summer undertaken by SCOV resident Nancy Montgomery. In that same spirit we continue collecting food every month for Impact of Southern Arizona. As of the end of July, we have donated 537 pounds of food. Remember to bring nonperishable items or monetary donations to all meetings.

You may see increased bat and hummingbird activity at your feeders. They are preparing for their migration south.

Take your feeders down at night if you don’t want the bats to empty them. You may have already witnessed this activity in August.

Roses need to be fertilized full strength. Add iron chelate.

Do a light pruning at the end of the month. Cut about one third from the top. Add mulch if needed.

Aqua Tone is a toning water workout that incorporates a variety of rhythmic body movements performed in the water.

This aquatic exercise class enhances cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance.

Being able to do a basic swim stroke is very helpful. Items used in the class are buoys, board, noodle, ball and fitness band. Most are available at the pool. A band can be purchased from Marcia for $5. We assign an experienced member to a newcomer to help with learning the various movements. You will get a good workout in a fun class.

It’s still summer here and a great time to commit to a core strengthening exercise routine. Why not try Pilates? Classes are still small making it a good opportunity to learn. SCOV offers Joseph Pilates method mat classes twice per week on Mondays and Thursdays. The benefits that come from performing specific strengthening and stretching exercises strengthen the body’s core muscles (your abdomen and back). The exercises increase spine mobility and build flexibility. More benefits include better balance and muscle tone and increased stamina. Because the classes are designed for seniors, all exercises can be modified and are taught by two experienced instructors. Many medical professionals now recommend tai chi to help their patients improve balance and prevent falls. In our classes we enjoy learning the tai chi form. We also increase flexibility, strength and learn to reduce stress. Our instructors Jose Hernandez-Rivera and Donna Drazenovich teach us how to apply tai chi principles to our daily lives.

Small court and lower net make it easy for players to master the court. Only one-fourth the size of a tennis court with light weight paddles Lee, Don, Barb and MaryAnne early morning and balls, it only takes two or three steps to cover your half of the court since play is most often doubles. Serves are underhand making it easy on the arms and shoulders.

Couples like to play as most games are played coed. Small court makes for small talk while playing and while watching.

Games are short and normally only last 10-15 minutes giving time to rest between games. What other paddle game can you learn in one hour and play for the rest of your life?

As temperatures in September start to moderate, here is part two about how SCOV tennis players beat the summer heat. On August 14, women held a monsoon mimosa tennis party. They started playing tennis at about 6:30 AM and then celebrated afterwards with mimosas, coffee, pastries, and fruit. What fun! On another occasion, several men and women gathered to play tennis at 7:30 AM and then hustled back indoors. At 4:30 PM, they regrouped for happy hour at The Views Restaurant–great combination of exercise and fellowship.

Some of our partner organizations are Youth On Their Own, El Grupo, Refugee Focus and Tucson Boys and Girls Club. Wheels for Kids is a total volunteer effort. We need mechanics.
