by John E. Wilson few months ago, I was invited to attend a A meeting of several SCOV residents who were considering becoming candidates for a Board position. I was asked to provide them with a few comments about my personal experience as a candidate, and now a Board member.

With the hope that some of you might be interested in running for the Board, I will briefly summarize the comments I made to that audience.

First, until someone suggested my name to the Nomination Committee and that committee sent me a letter asking that I consider becoming a candidate, I had never thought about doing that. I had no burning political ambitions but having been asked to consider it, I did, and decided it might be a good way to be involved in our community. I did not become a candidate because I had a special issue to push or an axe to grind.

Second, considering that there are only seven Board members, elected from a community of 4,000 or so residents, I figured that you must be pretty special to be on the Board. Seven from over 4,000? Wow! That was a very humbling thought. I soon found from talking with several Board members, past and present, that they were special, but not in any elitist way. They were special in that they were willing to give up their time, and quite a bit of it, because they wanted to help guide the operations of our SCOV community. Just good solid, straight-thinking folks who would do their best to make sound decisions for the benefit of their fellow residents.

Third, I learned that no Board member is in this alone. We help each other, educate each other, support each other.

Although we don’t always agree, I don’t believe any Board member thinks that another member is acting on the basis of anything other than what they sincerely believe to be in the best interests of our community. And, I must add, the staff of the SCOV Administration is a wonderful help in providing information and support to Board members. Being on the Board is a challenging but very rewarding experience. I thank the SCOV community for giving me the opportunity to serve and hope to justify your trust.

The Role of the Neighborhood Pride Committee The staff or volunteers you see occasionally walking around the community with clipboards or tablets, are the Neighborhood Pride Committee (NPC); they are the Association’s covenants enforcement officers.

They’re inspecting the property to ensure that everything is working properly, that conditions are safe and that nothing is reducing property values or your quality of life in our community.

In short, they’re making sure policies and rules are being followed, from parking and unkempt yards to improper exterior modifications and more. They field complaints from fellow homeowners and, if necessary, remind you (or your neighbor) when a rule has been overlooked.

The NPC report their findings to the Association with photos and detailed notes. Most violations are easily resolved without Board action. If not, after a letter from the Association invites compliance, the next step is a hearing before the General Manager or the Board. We want to hear your side of the story. Those who continue to ignore rules may be fined, or worse. The most serious cases may end up in court, though we try very hard never to get to that point.

The Association’s Neighborhood Pride Committee performs a vital function; please treat them with courtesy and respect. If you have any questions about the rules, the officers should be able to explain most of them. The General Manager and Board members also are happy to listen and respond to your concerns.

When you purchased your home in our common-interest community, you became contractually bound to abide by the covenants that protect the Association. Please review them and ensure you are in compliance. You can find them on our website. Also remember that the NPC doesn’t take the summer off and your homes still need to be cared for even if you’re not in residence. We appreciate you assuring the weeds are cared for during the summer months.

It will be making its appearance in the next few weeks. Beautiful desert colors have been selected to refresh the look and feel. This update is one of three that have occurred this year. The other changes to the website include updating the CONTACT US page to be friendlier and easier to gain information. The third change was reorganizing our calendars at the bottom of the home page to make it easier to find fun things to do, exercise classes and Association events (like Board meetings). There are even analytics on the web site to determine how people are coming to our website, what’s the most popular page and pages that need review due to inactivity. The website is a daily evolving communication tool. Changes are made several times a day to provide you with the most current information about what’s going on in Sun City Oro Valley.

As we turn to warmer months, I want to remind you to please drink water. A few sips every half hour can avoid dehydration and related medical problems.

Enjoy being in our cool Auditorium for our monthly free movies. It’s a chance to get out, be with friends and avoid the heat. We have our annual bus trip to the Arizona Diamondbacks baseball, and if you did not know, the stadium is air conditioned. The fun does not stop in SCOV just because it is getting hot.

We always advise that the best way to start is by having a conversation with your neighbors, letting them know how this affects you and the neighborhood. If this is happening when they are away from home, your neighbor may be unaware that their dog is lonesome, hungry or needs attention. Other times, they just don’t think the situation warrants improvement.

Since excessive noise caused by animals is handled by the Oro Valley Police Department, we want to provide you with the definition, process and penalties you should be aware of as a pet owner or as a resident who wants to register a complaint, starting with what the civil infraction means: Direct from the Code 18-8-1: “It is a civil infraction for anyone to own, possess, harbor and/or control any animal or bird which frequently or for continuous duration howls, barks, meows, squawks or makes other sounds, if they are clearly audible sounds beyond the property line of the property on which they are conducted and they disturb the public peace, quiet or comfort of the neighboring inhabitants.” The full code can be viewed at codepublishing.com/AZ/OroValley/.

Did you know that over 45 library volunteers put in more than 5,000 hours every year? In addition to the cheerful volunteers you see working at the desk, additional volunteers work in the back room cataloguing new items, sorting donations, covering and putting labels on books, audios, and videos, calling with overdue reminders and more. This volunteer spirit is one of the things I love best about SCOV, and we wouldn’t have our library without them.

If you are one of those people who would prefer to walk indoors out of the heat, indoor walking is available at the AFC on Mondays and Fridays from 1-2 PM. Three years ago, the Active Health Committee arranged summer indoor walking, and Lonnie Davis graciously extended it to the full year. The advantage of dedicated times is you find others with whom you can walk and talk. In addition, walkers are also welcome in AFC rooms 1 and 2 when there are no classes setting up or taking place. All levels are welcome. Come and walk and bring your neighbor.

Enjoy your summer, especially your travels to get a break from the heat.

Dehydration is when our body loses more fluid than we take in. It can happen quickly, and it can be fatal. Generally, the Institute of Medicine recommends a daily total water intake of 15 cups (or 3.5 liters) for men, and 11 cups (2.5 liters) for women. Other factors such as age, weight, lifestyle and physical condition also play a large part. Healthy hydration is drinking enough water for your personal health and lifestyle profiles. We live in a warm climate, so drink up. Water is portable. Carry small bottles with you wherever you go.

The Activity Center is the building that includes the Auditorium, Kachina Lounge, Dance Studio and Native American Rooms. Structures such as attached patios and storage areas are considered part of the Activity Center. The Bell Tower and Artisan Center are not part of the Activity Center. The areas surrounding the Activity Center such as parking lots, walkways and water features may be considered part of the Activity Center renovation if required by changes to the building.

The Aquatic & Fitness Center (AFC) wrapped up a successful year in addressing many resident suggestions and concerns. Three of our strongest targets in the past year: reconfiguration of the gym to accommodate more activities, reviewing pool protocol to maximize aquatic usage and diversity and constantly reviewing procedures as suggested by our residents. Special kudos to Ann Fall, Pat Herman and Ruth Coleman as AFC committee members with a total of 10 years of service.

Just in case you are not aware, you no longer need a tree in your front yard. If you have one of those messy mesquites, palo verdes, oaks or African sumacs, you may have it removed and no permission is needed. Don't plant anything in its place that is not on the approved plant list. We are trying very hard to limit trees that grow taller than rooftop. Our mountain views are very important.

Items that may be approved in-house through the Community Services Office are a whole house paint, roofing replacement, flatwork such as pavers and identical garage door replacement. Larger projects require having someone from the Architechural Review Committee (ARC) visit with the resident to go over what the project entails. Items that may impact painting require an ARC follow up inspection to assure that the paint matches where it meets the existing structure. We appreciate your cooperation so that we continue to look pristine now and into the future.

Election Vote results were reported Tuesday, March 27. There were 1,389 total votes cast. The newly elected Directors are Joy Huxtable (839) and Lou Gard (667), both elected for threeyear terms. All five initiatives passed: Bylaws 3.4 Notice of Meetings to allow for more individuals to call the meeting and expand the method through which the notice of the meeting is provided (For 1266, Against 83, Total Votes 1349, Needed to Pass 904).

Bylaws 5.1 Nominations of Directors to update the documents to reflect the current practice as recommended by the Nominating Committee and approved by the Board to send to the community for a vote (For 1289, Against 61, Total Votes 1350, Needed to Pass 905).

Bylaws 9.1 to remove the Food and Beverage Advisory Committee from Standing Committee status. They would be changed to Service and Support Committee status at the recommendation of the Food and Beverage Committee. The rationale for this change is that the committee advises and works closely with staff, which is the function of Service and Support Committees (For 1224, Against 118, Total Votes 1342, Needed to Pass 899).

Bylaws 9.3.a Election Committee to change the number of committee members required to reflect current need (For 1237, Against 107, Total Votes 1344, Needed to Pass 900).

Bylaws 9.4 Nominating Committee to change the number of committee members required to reflect current need and update the documents to reflect the current practice as recommended by the Nominating Committee and approved by the Board to send to the community for a vote (For 1216, Against 127, Total Votes 1343, Needed to Pass 900).

In the coming fiscal year, staff and the Finance-Budget Committee will be reviewing policies, annual contributions and allocation of Association resources as related to SCOV's cash investments, contingency fund, asset reserve fund and capital contribution fund. We will also be exploring the pros and cons of a staff addition for a purchasing and contracts manager. The Committee’s goal is to complete its reviews and submit any recommendations to the Board no later than the Board’s December 2018 study session. Contact Sharon Miller for more information.

Food and Beverage Advisory Chair Barb McNeill bjmac68@gmail.com Oct.-May, First Fri., 2-3 PM, The Views Terrace By the time you read this, the Blue Ribbon Panel has made their report to the Board of Directors (BOD), and we have a plan of action for revitalizing The Views Restaurant (TVR) including kitchen re-arrangement and staff training to insure service/food consistency.

Some recommendations from the restaurant consultant have already been implemented: the 10% resident discount ended April 17, allowing TVR to start increasing revenues.

(Focus group feedback provided support for this action.

These groups also re-enforced that residents want TVR to be successful.) More cost savings are in the works.

When the café became a full-service restaurant over a year ago, there was no overall business plan. The BOD has now provided direction for future planning: "The Views Res-

taurant is, first and foremost, an amenity serving the residents of SCOV and their guests. ... For all, the goal is good food and drink from a varied menu, well served, at a reasonable price...."

During our monsoon season, weeds grow in abundance and need to be removed as quickly as possible.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063 May is the time of the year when the golf course maintenance department really starts to get busy. The transition from winter Ryegrass to the summer Bermuda grass is in full effect. The Ryegrass has been chemically treated and is being slowly removed from the fairways and tees as the Bermuda grass is starting to come out of dormancy. However, a lot more is going to be happening on the golf course this summer.

The pond project of dredging out debris is going to start in early June. The pond on the right of #10 cart path was dredged a few years ago to remove the large amounts of silt running through the pumps and the irrigation system. However, this debris was moved to the pond on the left of the cart path so it still needs to have this material removed.

Another project will be repairing more traps that don’t drain well. Last summer we repaired three greenside traps on hole 18 and the right side one on hole 1. That repair work has been successful and those traps now drain well leading to much better playing conditions. This summer the other trap on hole 1 will be fixed, as well as the greenside traps on hole 5.

The chipping area has developed a large mound at the start of the fairway where divots have been filled over the years. We are going to smooth that mound into a small tee box to both eliminate the mound and add a new feature to the practice area.

Director of Golf - Rick Price rprice@theviewsgolfclub.com 520-917-8086 Get Back to Golf Our goal is to find creative ways to introduce our residents to The Views Golf Club. Whether it’s joining one of the active men's or women’s golf clubs, group or private golf lessons or just playing in general at special discounted pricing for residents, there are many ways to participate.

One of our most popular events on Thursday afternoons is the Chipping & Putting league. We have well over 200 residents signed up and have 80 play on a regular basis. It’s a fun way to introduce people to play the course without feeling intimidated by playing from the full distance at the standard tee markers. We set up the course from 25 yards and closer to the green with no scorekeeping. We play in groups of six people to meet more people and gather together after golf at the restaurant terrace for drinks, food and raffle prize drawings. Best of all it’s only $5 or $10 pp to participate.

Some of the comments we have heard are, “Thank you, we have lived here for 18 years and have never played the course. We had a great time and will be back.” “My husband hasn’t played in over eight years, and I’m so excited to get him back out on the golf course.”

Claudia Svarstad won the three-day stroke play Club Championship. She was able to shoot three consistent rounds to capture the crown.

Official league play will resume in November, but organized play will continue through the summer.

Greetings from The Views. Summer is almost upon us. Some might argue that it's been here for a month. With the hotter weather here, we’re looking forward to creating a new menu with seasonal entrees, more sandwich options at night and a new cocktail list. More information to come.

As some of you may have noticed, we have switched our napkins to a quality 3-ply product at an 8th fold. This replaced the highest quality napkin you can order which was a linen disposable napkin. This was a cost-saving decision.

Last year we spent a little over $10,500 on napkins. This was the fourth highest cost item for the year, behind brisket, chicken and ribeye. Through this decision, our annual cost savings will be estimated at 73% or $7,600. This is a significant difference.

As changes are made at the restaurant, I will continue to be transparent and am always happy to explain the reasoning behind the changes that are made. Should you have any question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

When you look into our studio on Wednesday mornings, one comes to an immediate conclusion that these artists are seriously at work. There are periods when you could hear a pin drop because of the passion-filled artistic fervor. Later in the period, during our 11 AM criOur perennial pros at work tiques, things tend to get a bit more boisterous. With our well-intended recommendations, complementary suggestions often need to be smoothed out, but the intent is always to improve the art piece. The submitting artist can take the suggestions or not, their choice.

Our "Distortions" theme show in the Activity Center offered many types of torqued and skewed images, and each piece had to be evaluated on its own brand and flavor of distortion.

May finds our seasonal residents flying north, and we wish them a safe journey. Our studio is in full operation during the summer, so if you have any interest in artistic creation, please come over to Catalina Vista on Wednesday mornings and join us.

At a recent club meeting, Larry Clark was the featured speaker. Larry has a life-long involvement with helicopters and fixed wing aircraft as a pilot and owner. He began his lively informative presentation with a history of the Bell HU1A or Huey helicopter.

He traced the development of the various Photo by Tom Prall models of the craft as it evolved into a multirole helicopter serving functions such as medical evacuations, VIP transport, troop carrier and gunship in the military where it was the "pick-up truck of the battlefield" as well as numerous roles as a commercial aircraft. It remains in civilian service as well as serving the Marine Corps. Larry then described his experience as a pilot in Viet Nam. He concluded by answering questions from the large number of visitors who had come to hear his presentation.

All SCOV residents are welcome at our monthly meetings and the use of the Modelers Room. On any day, if the lights are on and someone is in the Modelers Room, stop in. At our meetings, you will see what we are about and you may enjoy a cup of coffee and a sweet roll. From time to time we schedule field trips of interest to modelers.

Our beginning sculpture class, with Dave Dame instructing, is proceeding well, and the students are in the painting/patina phase of the process.

There are Tracy Getz and Tom Weeks sharing techniques some finelooking pieces being created by the class, and hopes are high that these are just the first of many more. Aleda Haug has been working with the more advanced members (previous head/torso classes) and refining their detailed sculptures. This is the month that the winter residents wrap things up for the season and migrate north. New pieces make their way into our studio showcase to be displayed through the summer. Our studio is in full operation during the summer, so anyone who has interest in clay sculpting is welcome to visit us on Monday mornings.

As our members scatter across the country for the annual summer migration, it is time to reflect on the accomplishments of the 2017-2018 winter session. We had three student orientation classes, graduating 18 people. Most of them joined the club, and many of them are very active in the daily activities of the shop, making lots of nice jewelry, providing additional opportunities for socializing and inspiring better attendance. Another positive dimension is the new ideas that they share, helping others to think about new materials, techniques, and designs. We have spent quite a lot of time on rehabilitating the lapidary table by repairing or replacing broken or worn parts, adding new types of polishing wheels, and organizing the wheels in a more logical sequence. Our new table saw has arrived and we are reorganizing the saw room for more efficient operation. Safe travels, and see you this fall.

The machines have been whirring and dust a-flying. The courtyard sale was very successful for the woodshop supply fund, thanks to all the generous donations of tools and equipment from our SCOV residents. We also received a donation of a much-needed additional workbench for the shop.

scovastronomy.com Our speaker on Friday, May 18, is Dr. Kathryn Volk from the Lunar and Planetary Lab at the University of Arizona. Dr. Volk has written numerous papers and has done extensive research on the Kuiper Belt. She said, "I will review our ever improving (but still far from complete!) observational inventory of the Kuiper Belt in the outer solar system. I'll describe the challenges in studying the Kuiper Belt and the exciting science we expect to see as a result of the next generation surveys. Recent studies hint at the possibility that our outer solar system is hiding one or more unseen large planets."

This is the last of our speaker series until next fall.

The Kuiper Belt is a huge circumstellar disc in the outer Solar System. It consists of small bodies of ice, rocks, dust and planets (like Pluto and Neptune). Other larger planets in the "belt" like Eris caused Pluto to be reclassified as a dwarf planet. It is thought to be the remnants of our planet formation.

At our May meeting we will discuss the multiple award winning book Becoming Nicole by Amy Ellis Nutt. Ms. Nutt, a Pulitzer Prize-winning science reporter for The Washington Post, writes the true story of a transgender girl, her identical twin brother and an ordinary American family's extraordinary journey to understand, nurture and celebrate the uniqueness in us all.

In June, our selection is the novel The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See. In a remote Yunnan village, LiYan has a baby outside of wedlock and abandons her in the nearest city. This is the story of mother and daughter's search for one another years later.

Aluminum Can Collection Update On April 10, 540 pounds of aluminum cans was taken to the scrap yard. We received $0.43 per pound which converts to $232.20 for the trip. Fiscal year-to-date, we have delivered 3,200 pounds of material and received a total of $1,328.60. As you should be aware, this primarily is used for purchases in the Loan Room.

Aquatone is a toning water workout that incorporates a variety of rhythmic body movements performed in the water.

This aquatic exercise class enhances cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance.

We meet Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 9 AM in the winter, 8 AM in the summer at the AFC pool. There is no fee to join the club or the class. The teachers are club member volunteers. Being able to do a basic swim stroke is very helpful. Items used in the class are buoys, board, noodle, ball and fitness band. Most are available at the pool. A band can be purchased from Marcia for $5. We assign an experienced member to a newcomer to help with learning the various movements. You will get a good workout in a fun class.

Joseph Pilates wrote that "physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness." Our classes teach balance, breathing, focusing on your core (abdomen and back muscles) while controlling your movements. There is constant motion from one exercise to the next. As a result, strength and stamina are developed. Your spine is lengthened and flexibility and mobility of the joints and posture will improve. A monthly schedule of our 20-60 mile rides is available on our website. Our well-tested loop routes support a wide variety of abilities and usually include a mid-ride coffee stop.

We also offer a mountain bike option on Wednesdays, which most often heads out into the Tortolita rangelands.

Tuesday morning, our Women on Wheels (WOW) group takes somewhat shorter rides nearer to SCOV. In addition, we hold a number of social events each season.

The Billiard Club from SaddleBrooke joined us on March 19 for a friendly 8-ball tournament. After four hours of play, SaddleBrooke and SCOV tied with 24 wins each. With the tie, SaddleBrooke retained the traveling trophy it won last by beating SCOV 29 to 19.

The new replacement pool table should be installed by the end of May. Additionally, the remaining three tables are scheduled for cloth replacement later this summer.

The Billiards Club internal championship play should be wrapped up soon, but not in time to meet the May Tipster publication date. Results will appear in the June Tipster.

The Billiards Club encourages anyone interested in playing (no experience required) to drop by the Billiards room in the afternoon. Lessons are available on request.

Bring lunch where indicated. Don’t forget binoculars, hat, water, sunscreen, insect repellent and bird guidebook. Gas money will be collected before departure from SCOV. Please contact the trip coordinator several days in advance to learn of any schedule changes. We will not be doing any trips during the hot summer months from June through September.

Some of our partner organizations are Youth on Their Own, El Grupo, Refugee Focus and Tucson Boys and Girls Club. Wheels for Kids is a total volunteer effort, and we need mechanics.
