From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community.

by Lauren Strassburg Our annual election is over and you, the residents have selected two new directors.

Congratulations to both. A resident was appointed to fill the remaining term of a resigning director.

The budget for the 2017-2018 year has been approved.

The 6% increase still keeps us competitive or on the low side when compared to similar HOA’s.

The residents of SCOV are from many areas of the country and many different backgrounds. One thing we all have in common is our desire to live a carefree, active life. Therefore we all need to be concerned what the future of SCOV should, will and can be.

SCOV is continually updating our facilities. Examples are the AFC, Restaurant, Pro Shop and Solar. All these changes or additions keep SCOV in the 21st Century. Future updates are likely to be Desert Oasis, Activity Center and our AFC pool. Once again, resident input and opinions are always a benefit. All residents need to be concerned and involved on how SCOV spends your limited resources (money). Consider becoming involved in future committees to be established for any new project.

An area of concern is use of our facilities. Should we limit use of our amenities by nonresidents and/or guests? Many thoughts have been expressed on this issue. They range from it’s not a problem to not allowing outside use. We need to establish a policy to satisfy the middle ground. It’s a fact that nonresident and guest use of our facilities is increasing.

2016 saw in excess of 4,800 guests signing in at the AFC. The first three months of 2017 saw 1,931 guests use the AFC. This is a problem that needs thought and solution. We have a guest policy but it is not enforced.

The character of our community could be changing by the increase of rental property. Recent actions have been taken to control the number of rental properties and the duration of time for each stay. Current rentals may only be the entire home and for a period of at least 28 days.

My expectation is the foregoing narrative will give some food for thought for the future of Sun City Oro Valley. May the future years be active and beneficial for our community.

In talking with many people who come to SCOV for a visit, I hear them rave about how beautiful it is here.

They drive around the community and marvel that everyone takes such good care and the yards look so immaculate.

Your hard work makes a lasting impression.

When I was interviewing for the position of General Manager here, I was driven around the community as well. I paid attention to the landscaping too. I know that if the residents take care of their landscaping, they care about the community. The Residents will take pride in not only the way the community looks but the way it functions and the service they provide to each other.

I know that many of you have left or will be leaving soon for the summer months. While you are away we continue to have visitors throughout the summer. They will continue to drive around our community. The image of our community will continue to make a lasting impression. I give my thanks in advance for your efforts in keeping your yards looking nice during your absence. I know it takes added expense to hire someone to keep the weeds out or trim the bushes and trees while you are away. Your efforts are appreciated by not only the staff but by the residents who remain here year around. I don’t suppose there will be any that fail to maintain their yards but if you are one of those people who fail, please reconsider. Make the choice to take pride in your property all year long.

This will be my first summer in Sun City Oro Valley. I expect it will be wonderfully warm, and I will be surrounded by homes that are well cared for and beautiful.

The Elephants in the Courtyard

plex, wandering visitors are greeted by something new and exciting. After months of planning, teaching and creating, the totem pole project is assembled and ready for the enjoyment of all who enter into the area.

With the sun glinting off the shiny glass and glazes of each piece, the installation, dedicated on March 29, Elephant detail from Noah’s ark. is a delight to behold. Too much to take in at once, nearby benches provide a spot to sit and examine the combination of whimsy and imagination. The temptation is to get close, nose to nose with an owl, mice climbing to the top of its hat or to count how many birds are coming out of the King’s pie.

Grandmas, who have more than once told little ones to “look, don’t touch”, send pointy fingers toward a glass dangle, unable to resist setting it swinging. From our windows in the clubs we smile and laugh at the response and often go out to meet and greet admirers of our work, to tell them how it all began. We get to know each other and make new friends in the process.

This project is a joint effort by the Clay and Glass Clubs begun in the fall of last year. Several people in the Clay Club have created personal totem poles for their yards over the years, but Barbara Peterson began to make one after another in her distinctive style for herself, neighbors, friends back home and her daughter in California. “I just can’t stop! I keep thinking of more things to make,” she reports. As in many artistic settings, she began to share her construction methods and other potters began their own individual projects.

The Clay Club has a reputation for socialization and one day, over a glass of wine after the monthly studio cleaning, a conversation began between Barbara and then Clay Club President, Joan Kelley. Dare we ask if we could create a set of totem poles for the courtyard? Residents usually bring their families through on casual tours. Ambassadors bring prospective buyers by to peek into windows and club members often invite those visiting guests in for short

introductions to the facilities. Why not give them something to investigate and talk about? Why not show off the talents of the experienced or late blooming artists living among us? Barbara headed up the planning committee and Joan wrote the proposal to present to Association management.

Grounds maintenance personnel cemented the poles in buckets and buried them in the ground for us. Classes began, ideas flew about and the kilns fired away.

Not wanting to restrict participation to our own club, we asked the Glass Club to join us. Both mediums are suitable to outdoor installation and are relatively sturdy and certainly complement each other. Many of our contributors are members of both clubs. Resa Lankes created her first glass project to make windows for a clay fairy house, complete with Rapunzel’s hanging braid. Karen Kane segued into clay after years of glass work to create her princely frog.

Even our woodworker-potters Gary Brown and Bill Snead collaborated to build Bill’s complex jig to make a pentagonal structure yet to be completed for the project. We had no idea it would be so popular with members or such a collaboration of ideas and cooperation. Some individual pieces are made entirely of clay or glass, but often they are a combination of both.

Water made of glass is in waves made of clay. Dangles or beads of fused glass are attached to holes made in clay to accommodate them, thanks to the firing abilities of crossover member Nancy Eckhoff, who tells us, “Whatever you need me to fire for you just let me know.”

Who knows what will happen next? Imagine a home tour of backyard totem poles in the future, Patti Pepelnjak adjusting her wandering in, noses close lizard’s prey. to special pieces and pointy fingers reaching out to set a glass shard in motion. We have much work and play in our future and many smiles to go before we are on to the next discovery.

What a delight it is.

There are times when the residents may spot something that needs to be brought to management’s attention immediately and the Administration Office is closed. What is the process?

On page 2 of every Tipster, bottom right corner the procedure is listed. It states: “If you encounter something in the common areas or golf course needing immediate attention (e.g., a broken irrigation head) and the Administration Office is closed, please report the issue to a building monitor.

However, if a situation like this occurs after all the buildings are closed and no monitor is available, please contact the After-Hours Emergency Line.” Tell a monitor first. If they are not available, call 825-1161. There is a manager on duty that has access to vendors to address emergencies. Please remember this is for emergencies, if your concern is not an emergency then please leave a message on the appropriate manager’s office number which is listed in the Tipster, page 2, on the left column.

I have always been very proud of our monitor team. This team is made of people with a variety of backgrounds. They range from a school principal, CEO, nurse and the list goes on. Keep in mind that they are not housekeeping but they are hired to do chores and watch over all our facilities. At every

monitor meeting, I always read emails and notes that I receive from residents thanking a monitor. If you ever want to thank one for going out of their way, please contact me. The monitor position is a job that goes unnoticed by many. Keep in mind that SCOV is the only community that has monitors.

Other communities have clubs set up tables, chairs, make coffee, put out water, etc. for meetings. I want to thank the monitors publicly for all you do for the residents of SCOV.

Thanks to your support, we raised over $600 on sales in March, a record since I’ve been here. This money will be used to purchase new books and movies.

Our Library continues to be a well-used resource. There were 3,064 items checked out in March, which was 450 more than average. With more patrons learning how to put items on reserve with the click of a mouse from home, the number of reserves completed was 374, up 106 from the previous month.

The last of the Academy Award nominated films have arrived. Two copies each of the movies Hidden Figures, Lion, and La La Land are now in our collection, but you’ll have to

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 917-8073 Improving Physical Fitness When we think about training the body, we want to mimic how the body moves. Movements like the classic push-up or pull-up do just that by asking the body to perform pushing and pulling actions with its own weight. As fitness training has evolved we’ve gained more knowledge about the human body, more of an emphasis is placed on functional training, which includes putting the body in dynamic positions that recreate activities of daily living. This focuses more on engaging core and stabilizer muscles, such as the abdominal muscles and those found in the lower back. Classic exercises build underlying strength and improve functional movement. There are definite benefits to incorporating them into your workout.

How we do that has varied thoughts. As I toured the community I saw that the response to driveway shrubs being trimmed was well received and instituted. Thanks to the residents for this safety issue.

The current approved plant list does address which trees, if planted, will grow to a height that will protect views. That doesn’t manage current trees that have grown much taller than many would like them to be. As for house additions obstructing a neighbor’s view, ARC can only follow the guidelines that are currently in place. As long as a resident builds within lot setbacks there are no restrictions on size. SCOV does not allow two-story units.

The largest number of submittals to ARC are in regards to walls and fences to restrict javelinas from destroying plants.

Oak trees are a big draw for those ravenous creatures. Before you plant anything, please check the approved plant list.

Trees that have been removed are mesquites, palo verdes and oak trees. African sumacs are restricted by Oro Valley.

Check your Development Standards before making changes on the exterior of your residence or grounds.

All these good things are happening because we have such a generous, supportive community, a dedicated, involved volunteer staff and a knowledgeable cheerleader in our librarian, Kate Cusumano.

Our most ambitious fundraiser this year was the Home Tour. We want to thank again the homeowners who opened their homes to us. In appreciation, we are honoring them by dedicating a new book to each couple with a bookplate in the front. This will be a lasting memento and thank you for their generosity. Sometimes it can be difficult finding enough staff to keep the doors open. If someone calls in ill then another staff member needs to cover for that person or someone may be requested to come in on their day off. The wait staff will work the extra tables but there could even be tables open that won’t be available for seating. If you arrive and the hostess can’t seat you right away it might be due to a staffing issue, and the hostess does not want to seat you until someone can take your order.

When a large group of golfers, bikers or a club comes in at once, it can be a challenge to take all their orders in a timely manner. Any advance notice for a large group would

Jane makes necklaces of novelty yarns and beads. “While knitting long scarves for the cold winters of New York, I ended up with leftover pieces of yarn too short to make more scarves. I made a short necklace, added a few beads, and the Fiber Fling was born.” She also offers colorful pottery wind chimes and clay scroll dinner accessories for use as name tags or food labels.

We developed and implemented a month long celebration of “We Heart SCOV.” We hosted a high tea celebrating Sun City’s 30th Anniversary where special recognition was given to 27 of the original “Trailblazers.” We developed and produced four new ads to be used on our website and television.

As the days grow longer the amount of power produced by the solar arrays continues to increase. For the first five months of the Solar Services Agreement (SSA), November–March we have generated over 260,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) for SCOV. Our cost savings through March under the SSA was $2,060. Each and every kWh the solar system produces saves SCOV 8/10th of a penny. That may not seem like a big number, but the first-year net savings to SCOV from the project is expected to be greater than $5,500. This does not include additional cost savings due to the TEP rate increase expected this summer.

As our season winds down, a busy time begins for our maintenance department. Mike Kropf and his crew will be busy with various projects over the summer. Fairways will be aerified and/or spregged if needed. The work on the pond on the left side of number 10 will be resumed. There are plans to work on the traps on number 18 and the grass traps on number 4. Please support Mike and his crew as they work to keep our course in fantastic shape.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 917-8063 May is the time of the year when the golf course maintenance department really starts to get busy. The transition from winter ryegrass to the summer Bermuda grass is in full effect. The ryegrass has been chemically treated and is being slowly removed from the fairways and tees as the Bermuda grass is starting to green back up. However, there is a lot more that is going to be happening on the golf course this summer.

The pond project of dredging out debris is going to start in early June. The pond on the right of #10 cart path was dredged a couple years ago to remove the large amounts of silt running through the pumps and the irrigation system. However, this debris was moved to the pond on the left of the cart path so that pond still needs to have this material removed.

Another project will be regrassing the restaurant lawn. Following the terrace construction there is very little Bermuda grass remaining. During the winter a large amount of rye seed was used to cover the dirt and look pretty. The lawn will now need to be repaired correctly so it will look good year round.

Number 4 grass traps will be finished this summer. The two remaining grass traps will be converted to one large trap and the bottoms will be lifted to make for an easier approach shot to the green. Combined with the removal of the left trap last summer, this will hopefully make the hole more player friendly.

Greetings from The Views Restaurant. Although many of our residents have left us for cooler weather, we look forward to continuing the positive momentum in the restaurant with fun and exciting new additions.

First, I would like to congratulate Errick Owens, former lead server and bartender, on his promotion to Restaurant Manager. He has truly impacted this restaurant in many ways over the last year, and we look forward to seeing him succeed in a management role.

In May, we’ve added some fun items to our beverage selection. We have several new wines on the menu, including one seasonal wine which will change every season. This wine is selected to exemplify the perfect wine for the season, while allowing our residents to explore a varietal that they may not have ever had in the past. Our first seasonal wine is a Vino Verde Rose from the southern part of Portugal. It is light, effervescent, vegetal and mineral forward, with a nice balance of acid. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

In addition, we are introducing The Views’ very first craft cocktail menu. Over the last few months we have slowly acquired some boutique liquors; most are distilled here in Arizona. We have created a cocktail menu to showcase these additions using creative blends and house-made ingredients.

On May 14 the restaurant will celebrate all the mothers in the community with a Mother’s Day brunch with omelet and carving stations and a full spread of breakfast and lunch items. We hope you will join us from 11 AM-4 PM. We will be closed for dinner.

If so, you have probably walked around the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

This airplane is unique in that it is built with a composite shell instead of using aluminum. When members of the Modelers Club recently visited the museum they had this picture taken in front of the massive jet engine which produces more than 78,000 pounds of thrust.

All SCOV residents are welcome at our monthly meetings and the use of the Modelers Room. On any day, if the lights are on and someone is in the room, stop in. At our meetings, you will see what we are about, and you may enjoy a cup of coffee and a sweet roll. From time to time we schedule field trips of interest to modelers.

Several beautiful pieces are in process in our lab this month with some being baked as this article is written. Our annual barbecue, held at our president’s home, was a friendly social event enjoyed by all attendees. Thank you Al and Laurie Lichaa for opening up your home to our club. The head/torso students are completing their sculptures before leaving for the summer and the first-time pieces show great promise.

Our studio is a cool, comfortable place to work on summer projects. It’s quieter and lends itself to more concentration.

Besides, it’s too hot in the summer afternoons, so what a great place to work on a sculpture.

This is the time of the year that the place to escape the heat is in the studio.

The Water Media group is watching a video by the artist Tony Van Hasselt. He is demonstrating technique of capturing sunlight and shadow on a cliff in Georgia O’Keefe’s country in New Mexico. Join the group at 1 PM to perfect techniques of painting in water media as well as the fellowship of painters.

The club holds beginner classes in early fall and late winter. For two days, the students create sterling silver pendants. The pendant project is designed to teach the basics: shop safety, jewelry design; making the silver components and soldering them together; buffing and polishing the silver; and setting the stone cabochon. On the third morning, the students receive a 3-hour orientation on lapidary work and the different steps needed to make a cabochon. Cabochons can be formed in many sizes and shapes, suitable for earrings, bracelets and bola ties, as well as pendants. The class sign-up sheet is in the silver shop; just let the monitor know that you would like to participate. Congratulations to our March 2017 student class on successfully completing the introductory course of instruction, and for making some beautiful pendants: Barb Armes, JoAnne Bowman, Kristi Coy, David Lundstedt, Peg Rocklin, and Bob Watson.

Our speaker for Thursday, May 18, is Molly Simon, a graduate Ph.D. candidate from the U of A Lunar and Planetary Lab. She will speak on planetary formation and methods of determining habitation. Molly received the Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award from the Astronomy Department at the U of A. This will be the last of this year’s Astronomy Club’s speaker series, and we will break for the summer. A new series will commence on October 19. Don’t forget the star party (see above) on May 2.

Our classes teach proper balance, breathing, focusing on your core (abdomen and back muscles) and controlling your movements.

There is constant movement from one exercise to the next.

As a result, strength and stamina are developed. Your posture gets better, your spine is lengthened and flexibility and mobility of the joints improves. We have two experienced instructors who teach the Joseph Pilates system to seniors.

In February, the Billiard Club hosted a tournament with SaddleBrooke, which they won 29 to 19.

In March, the club board met to approve the implementation of a handicapping system for internal club tournaments to put players of all levels on a more equal footing. A tournament was held in April using this system. We will award prizes based on the level of participation to the three finalists. Club members interested in establishing their handicap level should contact Jim Baker.

Our annual meeting was a splendid affair. Three board positions were filled with new, incoming officers/directors, and a fine dinner was enjoyed by all. The ladies tournament had large galleries, and spectators were treated to some solid tennis. The winners are: Flight A: Ruby Fuhrmann/Dianna Rigamonte Flight B: Judy Hood/Sandy Wilson Congratulations to all the finalists, and thanks to all the participants in this important intraclub function. Net proceeds from entry fees and private donations were presented to Cheer Bears and Impact of Arizona. Many of our seasonal members will be making their way back to cooler climes this month, and we wish them a safe trip and a fun, healthy summer season. The May board meeting will be the last for the 2017 season, and the next meeting is scheduled for October. Organized tennis is ongoing with start times shifted to the earlier hours beginning May 1.

Summer players will have the edge on the seasonal ones when we return in the fall. Keep playing. Tennis rules.

Some of our partner organizations are Youth on Their Own, El Grupo, Refugee Focus and Tucson Boys and Girls Club.
