When I moved here almost 10 years ago, I came for the views. That was number one on my list of priorities. Little could I guess back then that our restaurant, lounge, and terrace as well as our golf club would carry this most significant name. And while we’re still not quite ready to experience the new digs, the process and positive changes already made have been fruitful for our community.

If you have not experienced a Friday night Happy Hour, you’ve missed something wonderful. It’s a gathering place where you may run into friends and neighbors that you haven’t seen in years, listen to some really good music and chat about the latest happenings. Our Wine and Holiday Dinners have been amazing. Each and every one sold out, or at least the reservation lists say so. I have had the pleasure of hostessing most of these dinners, and I can tell you first hand that residents attending are extremely satisfied and highly recommend them. We have an amazing staff with Chris Sapp and Leif Wolcott at the helm. Executive Chef, Benjamin Hoffman, and his crew are truly blessing us with delicious and exceptional meals. The one discouraging thing is the number of no-shows. The Views has had to turn people away even though there were places still available. Please take the time to cancel your reservation if you are unable to attend, so that your neighbors on the waiting list will be able to enjoy the evening and The Views won’t be wasting food. We’re all having such a good time and enjoying outstanding offerings; let’s not spoil it by being inconsiderate.

If you haven’t taken the opportunity to visit The Views, stop by and say, “ Hi” to Chris and Leif, and let them know what kind of dinners you’d like to see in the future. And if you have any catering needs, big or small, let The Views help make it a memorable occasion. It’s St. Patrick’s month, and we know how much fun it is to share that green drink with friends. Next year at this time we’ll all be able to visit the newly-remodeled restaurant, lounge, and terrace. It seems like a lengthy process, but it’s going to be terrific, and each of us will greatly enjoy The Views.

Every year about this time a very important process begins. That process is seeking new members for the many Association committees. As I did last year, I am once again asking the very talented pool of SCOV residents to please consider serving on one or more of your very valuable and productive committees.

If you haven’t served on a committee or even if you have, it might be difficult for you to realize how much the committee structure means to SCOV. The Board and staff work hard and perform many tasks to help keep the community operating as well as possible. However, the investigations, evaluations and projects that the committees undertake equate to a significant portion of the Association’s work.

Simply put, without the committees there would be a need for a much larger staff (more expense to the homeowners) or the community would not be able to accomplish the volume of work that is presently undertaken.

Please consider being part of the solution and volunteer for one or more of our vital committees. In addition to ad hoc committees that the Board may appoint from time to time, the committees you are urged to consider joining are: Aquatic & Fitness Center, Ambassadors, Active Health, Architectural Review, Community Assistance, Community Directory, Consumer Referral, Election, Finance/Budget, Food and Beverage, Gift Shop, Golf Advisory, Government Affairs, Marketing, Neighborhood Pride, Nominating, Posse, Properties, and Tipster Editorial.

Now is your opportunity to get involved in shaping the future of your community. We urge members to complete and return the committee application form that will be found in the March Tipster or go to the Association website at www.scovaz.com to complete the form.

Depending on the number of responses, we may not be able to place each interested resident on a committee. Our goal, however, is to build a database of interested volunteers who can step into a committee assignment not only now but also in the future

Building Connections

By Kate Cusumano The Sun City Oro Valley Library is a favorite place to spend time, whether it’s finding the perfect book or movie, finding like-minded friends, or volunteering behind the desk. What started out in 1988 with 35 paperbacks and a set of cookbooks in a closet-sized room, has evolved into the current 1500 square foot state-of-the-art facility in the Welcome Center. A major renovation completed in August 2015 brought the library into the 21st century with a computerized circulation system that allows residents to connect with the library catalog and put items on reserve from a computer or smart phone anywhere.

sisting them finding books and videos and keeping the shelves in order. Several work in the library office at a myriad of jobs, including adding newly acquired items to the database, handling the large volume of donated books and videos, covering and processing new items for the shelf, and calling patrons about overdues. Donated materials that are not added to our collection are sold, traded at Bookmans, or passed on to other worthy organizations, such as the VA hospital, a woman’s prison, and the public library. All told, about 300 hours are worked each month by library volunteers to keep things running efficiently in one of SCOV’s most popular amenities.

The Library Lobby, decorated in a Western motif, has a leather couch and side chairs for reading comfort. On display are hundreds of current magazines and jigsaw puzzles donated by residents and available on the honor system.

Our 15,000 item collection of hardbacks, paperbacks, large print, audiobooks and videos holds mainly new titles that suit our active retirement community. You won’t find anything on how to get your baby to sleep through the night, but you will find plenty of books on hiking, birding or gardening in Arizona, the history of the West, and nearly every title on the New York Times bestseller list. Librarian Kate Cusumano stays busy purchasing bestselling books, hit movies, and the latest season of popular television series that residents get hooked on. All of these items are purchased with money raised through direct donations, fundraising by an active Friends of the Library organization and the sale of donated items.

In a community that operates largely on volunteer power, the SCOV Library takes volunteering to new heights. A dedicated volunteer staff of around 50 residents works at the circulation desk, or behind the scenes in the back room, to keep the Library open five and a half days a week. Most work at the front desk, greeting fellow residents, checking items in and out, as-

Although small, our library successfully competes with an excellent local public library by offering a more personalized experience. Recently, SCOV resident Esther Zeis asked Kate if she would consider purchasing a book that wasn’t already in our collection. “I’m number 17 on the waiting list with the public library, and I need it for my book club next month,” she said.

The book was a fairly recent publication with good reviews, and Kate agreed to buy it. Within three days, the book was in Esther’s hands. It is this kind of neighbor to neighbor connection that makes our library stand out.

SCOV library patrons love to meet favorite authors, and the library makes this possible by bringing in five or six authors a year to speak and sign copies of their latest books. The Friends of the Library hosts another two authors at an annual Books and Authors Luncheon fundraiser. Past authors include locally beloved and bestselling author JA Jance, and Philip Caputo, a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist and author.

Studies show that reading reduces stress, enhances memory, sharpens analytical thinking skills and forges new connections in the brain. We can all use that, right? Stop by the library soon to check the bestseller list, find a good movie, peruse our book sale, chat with a friendly volunteer, sharpen your thinking skills, and form new connections. We’ll be ready for you.

rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 917-8070 What You, as a Homeowner, Can Do About Landscape Maintenance in the Common Areas One of the beautiful aspects of our community is the natural landscaping. As a resident of Sun City Oro Valley you enjoy the 1000 acres of Common Area land owned and cared for by the Association. The manager of our Common Area Maintenance crew is Mary Kaye Cunningham. Mary has worked for the Association since the very beginning. Her crew have many responsibilities with all this land to manage, one of which is to maintain of most of the common area that abuts homeowner lots.

There is a maintenance schedule where a 5’ buffer is maintained behind homeowner lots on our common area.

It takes approximately 6 months for her staff to cover this area.

If you want landscaping done before the crew comes behind your lot you can participate in the Pre-Qualified Landscaper program. This is a program which qualifies landscapers who have gone through a process that informs them of what work is allowed in our common areas. It is the responsibility of the homeowner to interface with the Association and apply for the work to be done and to make sure the permit is properly displayed. If your favorite landscaper is not on the list, there is an application process for them to become qualified.

The scope of work that can be done, including trimming and removal of trees, may be found on our website under the Members Services>? Section of our website. The applications need to be submitted to our Community Services Coordinator who is available during the work week from 9-11 AM. Another type of common area maintenance the Association manages is for lots that qualify as a Golf Course View Lot. The services the Association provides behind these lots can be discussed with Mary Kaye by calling her at 9178059 or emailing her at scvcam@suncityorovalley.com.

We all enjoy and appreciate the beautiful landscaping of our natural desert surroundings and our relationship between our homeowners and the Association. This is another excellent service provided and administered by the Association to enhance your property values.

We have on file how clubs want rooms set up for regular meetings. Never assume everything will be ready for your event if you have not told Coco Sullivan (917-8072) what you need. We find guest speakers are arriving who need a projector, sound system etc. It won’t be there if a room set-up was not submitted to Coco. We want your presentations/events/parties to be a success, but if we are not told ahead of time what you need, it won’t be ready. It is not the fault of the monitor if they don’t receive a set-up sheet from Coco. SCOV is the only community that has monitors. In other communities club members set up and prepare everything. The club president/leader is the main contact for your club with Coco. Directions are taken only from this person. Let’s communicate so that every event goes smoothly.

Different types of exercise benefits your health in different ways: Aerobic activities like running, biking and swimming strengthen your heart and increase your endurance.

Strength training like weight lifting or resistance training builds muscle and bone mass, improves balance and prevents falls. It’s one of the best counters to frailty in old age.

Flexibility exercises like stretching and yoga help prevent injury, enhance range of motion, reduce stiffness, and limit aches and pains.

At first, just focus on getting any kind of exercise, whatever it may be. As exercising becomes your habit, try adding variety. If you keep at it, the benefits of exercise will begin to pay off.

SCOV is fast approaching it’s 30th anniversary and as you drive through the community, you see many homes with roof repairs or complete roof replacements going on. Many of you have had this work done, sometimes at considerable expense. The newest homes in SCOV are about 18 years old, the oldest in the 28/29 year old range. As these homes have sat in the blistering summer heat for all those years, the underlayment and plywood may have become degraded and may cause roof leaking to some degree.

As roof tiles are removed many, from 10 to 20 percent, may break due to age or the effects of the constant heat.

It is becoming more difficult to find compatible roof tiles to match. Very few of the roof tiles originally used on our homes are being manufactured today. Small repairs can be done by putting closely matching tiles in an inconspicuous location on the roof. However, on a complete roof removal and replace (lift and relay) there may not be adequate replacement tiles available. This may force the homeowner to replace the complete roof with new tiles.

Election Committee

SCOV Voter Validation and Ballot Counting

March is the month when the Election Committee meets weekly to validate ballots. In February’s Election Committee’s Tipster article it was explained how the validation process is conducted. This month the process for counting the ballots is explained.

On Tuesday, March 22 at 8 AM, the Election Committee will gather in the Welcome Center to count the ballots submitted by eligible homeowners. The validated ballots have been placed in bundles of 25. The Election Committee is divided into counting teams of two. There are also two statisticians.

The Election Committee knows how many votes they must account for in the election for the directors and each question.

They also know the margins that are required for an initiative to pass. The counting teams begin by opening the bundles of 25 white red lettered ballot envelopes and making tallies on a tally sheet. They account for all 25 envelopes (votes).

Election Committee continued from page 7 Their tallies are then submitted to the statisticians who enter their votes into a master spreadsheet. Randomly, a vote batch is recounted to test for accuracy. There are new and veteran members on the committee. When there are questions, the veteran members usually are able to answer the questions.

Once all the ballots have been tallied and accounted for, the statisticians prepare the report to the management who reports to the Board and community on the vote. If this report is prepared before the Board meeting is over, the results will be announced during the Board meeting. If not, they will be posted on the doors, bulletin board and sent out on In the Know, and Bob Mariani’s This Week in SCOV newsletter.

Residents are welcome to observe the validation process and count of the vote.

Friends of the Library The Friends of the Library annual Books and Authors Luncheon has been sold out.

We had a very successful membership drive in January. If you missed the drive you can still become a member of the FOL by asking the volunteers at the desk in the library. Annual membership is $15 pp and $20 for a household. That money is used for library acquisitions and expenses. Donations of current books and DVDs are always welcome.

There are shelves in the library lobby for a magazine swap and jigsaw puzzles.

Jo has always loved art. “After taking classes in watercolor, pastels, and Oriental brush painting, I decided to get back into making cards for sale instead of just for friends.” She concentrates on making cards for all occasions using various techniques for creating pop-up cards, flip cards and coordinating packs of three smaller cards.

Rose says, ”I work with copper, brass and German Silver as my starting point. I make earrings, bracelets and necklaces incorporating metal, glass, found treasures, rustic beads, gems, stones and disassembled vintage pieces, making statement jewelry that is tribal, western, dressy, fun and funky.”

Governing Documents Review Committee The GDRC (Governing Documents Review Committee) is pleased to present revised Bylaws and CC&R documents for your approval in a July vote. The Board’s charter for the GDRC asked that the governing documents be reviewed to assure compliance with Arizona law, alignment with current practices and readability for our community. The GDRC has revised the CC&R document to simplify text and focus on the practices related to property at SCOV. It has revised the Bylaws document to simplify text and focus on the procedures related to how the Association operates in the community at SCOV. Over 90% of the changes made in the documents were made to increase clarity or reduce duplications within and across documents. Legal compliance and up-dating practices were the next category of revision. The proposed documents are available for review on the SCOV website. Spring is right around the corner, and here are spring cleaning reminders concerning personal yards: • Trees must be trimmed up at least seven feet over sidewalks.

• Plants should not extend out over sidewalks, and frost damaged parts of shrubs and trees should be cut off and removed.

• Wildflowers are allowed until after they have bloomed, at which time they need to be removed.

• Cracks in driveways, sidewalks, and where the cement meets the asphalt in the street are the responsibility of homeowners to keep weed-free.

• Hedges, anywhere in the yard, are not to be over six feet tall. Note: A hedge is a fence or barrier formed by a line of closely spaced plants, performing a similar function to a screen wall or fence.

• Make sure your house number is visible from the street and that all lights in the fixture are lit, so it may be seen at night.

A few years ago eight cars parked outside and eight garages were robbed after Posse patrols were over. Police investigation revealed only one car was broken into, it had a laptop computer in view. The other cars were unlocked. All eight cars had garage door openers in them.

Here are safety tips when you park your car outside. Lock your car. Don’t leave any attractive asset, such as a phone, computer etc. visible in the car. Don’t leave your garage door opener in the car. If you park on your driveway turn on your outside garage lights.

March is the beginning of the golf course maintenance busy season. The weather starts to warm up into the 80s, and the chances of rain go down. These changes in weather lead to many new problems including heavy growth of grasses, increased wet and dry areas from compaction and Poa Annua seed production.

The warmer weather causes the soil temperatures to rise which releases more nutrients to the grass. The problem is the grass begins to grow faster than it can be mowed. This leads to higher fuel and labor costs for the increased mowing and cleaning grass clippings on the fairways and approaches.

The warmer weather also starts the Poa Annua bloom on the fairways and approaches. One of the ways to slow the grass growth and Poa Annua is by spraying a growth regulator. This chemical offsets the price of continued mowing and allows the maintenance crew to concentrate on other areas of the course.

The biggest issue is the increase of dry and wet areas.

These problem areas occur due to large amounts of play during the winter causing compaction as well as irrigating with higher quantities of water. Fairways have already been deep-tine aerified once in January, and will be done again in February and March. This process penetrates the soil about seven to nine inches, allowing water and air to the roots.

The wet areas are alleviated by allowing the water to enter the soil, and the dry spots are less severe with the water reaching the roots.

The GAC provides a forum for customers of The Views to express concerns about the operation and suggestions for improving the golf experience. Our meetings are open to both resident and public golfers. We encourage you to attend our monthly meetings.

March in SCOV brings the warm spring weather and great golfing conditions at The Views Golf Course. The schedule of play for the Men’s Nine-Hole Golf Club starts with Irish Four Ball on March 3. The Play with Buddies Scramble is on March 10 and is followed by the monthly cClub meeting in the Activity Center directly after play ends. There is no club play on March 17 in order to facilitate the Ladies 9-Hole Invitational golf event. Round one of the Men’s Nine-Hole Club Tournament starts March 24 on the front nine of The Views. The second round of the tournament is March 31.

Members interested in playing in the Men’s Nine-Hole Club Tournament are to sign up in the Club Book located in The Views Pro Shop. The fee for the tournament will be in the book. The club Tournament takes place over four consecutive Thursdays, and participants must play in a minimum of three of the four play dates with the best three out of four rounds, counted toward the final score.

A monthly schedule of our 20-60 mile rides is available on our website. Our well-tested loop routes support a wide-variety of abilities and usually include a mid-ride coffee stop. We also offer a mountain bike option on Wednesdays, which most often heads out into the Tortolita rangelands.

Tuesday morning, our WOW (Women on Wheels) group take somewhat shorter rides nearer to SCOV. In addition, we hold a number of social events each season.

Thanks to all hands on deck, the move has been completed to the new space in the Ceramics Studio. All glazing operations are now separated from the raw clay operations as we continue to share space with former ceramic operations and fused glass kilns. Our membership continues to grow and the spaces for personal storage have been rearranged to accommodate this delightful dilemma and make the bucket room safe to navigate. With new faces there are continual introductions and social gatherings to get to know everyone.

The Joseph Pilates system of exercises has never been in such high demand. His exercises have been around now for 40 years. Fortunately, Sun City offers the Joseph Pilates classes here twice per week. People ask “Can the benefits of this Pilates method, which come from the strengthening and stretching exercises we do, really develop the body’s core (abdomen and back muscles), increase spine mobility and build flexibility?” The answer is a definite “Yes”. Sixteen teams participated in the 135 Mixed Doubles Tournament in January. Teams were divided into four flights.

Final winner results: Flight A, Ruby and Ron Fuhrmann; Flight B, Sandy Fritz and Marty Kass; Flight C, Karen Lee and Bill Pitts and Flight D, Sandy and John Wilson. Tournament fees and donation in the amount of $1,195 was given to Casa Amigas. Thanks to all the club members for their generous donations.

At the Mariachi Concert on January 24 more than 300 folks filled the Auditorium to be entertained by the Pueblo Aztlan High School Mariachi Band. It is the biggest fundraiser for the year, and the band receives a sizable donation for their future travels and competitions. The conductor, John Contreras, surveyed the audience for years couples have been married. Hands went up from 25 to 70 years.

The last hands raised were Dr. Dan and Clara Price with 76 years. The band dedicated a song to them, sung by two of the band members.

Dr. Dan and Clara danced. After receiveing a standing ovation, the band presented them with a big bouquet of flowers.

The Ladies Doubles Tournament is March 2-19. The St. Patrick’s Day Mixed Doubles and Social will be March 13.

Our SawStop table saws do a great job cutting wood while also preventing finger amputation. One of our members recently demonstrated both of those features. That was the third finger save we have had since acquiring these machines. A video is available on our website that shows how SawStop saws prevent serious injury.
