Read that Ballot Carefully

You no doubt recently received your ballot and noted that the Board was asking for an amendment to the CC&Rs and Bylaws.

What’s that all about? In the past year there have been several instances when a resident’s behavior has posed a risk to the health, safety and welfare of other residents, guests and staff members. In each case, the Board acted as swiftly and appropriately as allowed. However, the Governing Documents do not allow for a hearing to be held for 15 days and to suspend privileges only a maximum of 60 days. Some acts are so serious that the Board should not wait 15 days to take action and sometimes a 60-day suspension is not sufficient. In the past year, violations requiring Board action have ranged from health safety concerns to threats of violence. A “yes” vote would allow the Board to take immediate action and to suspend member privileges for up to one year if the severity of the violation so warrants. To ensure consistency between the CC&Rs and Bylaws, a single vote is required.

With the recent resignation of a Board member, some confusion and questions have arisen. With three seats open, voters may vote for up to three candidates. The candidates placing first and second will be elected to the three-year terms, and the candidate coming in third will serve the one-year term.

A forum will be held on March 1 at 1 PM in the Social Hall to answer questions regarding the amendments and the election process.

Bob Mariani, General Manager Serving On A Committee How to be Part of the Solution

Volunteerism is the lifeblood of many successful communities. Sun City Vistoso is no exception, and we have built a strong committee structure to assist the Board of Directors and management in the operation of various aspects of our community.

The Board of Directors is responsible for the entire community, establishing policies that affect the community. Management is responsible for carrying out Board policies and the day-to-day operation of the community.

Often, this leaves precious little time to devote to details of individual areas of concern to the community.

Various committees have been established to address this situation. Operated under a Mission Statement adopted by the Board, these groups of community volunteers address a specific area of our community, research and explore different ideas, talk to other community members and make recommendations for improvements.

Every year, the Board appoints a community member as chair of each committee and then, working with the chair, appoints members to the committee. Each committee works together but is separate from the Board of Directors. One Board member serves as a non-voting liaison to each of the committees to keep ongoing the flow of information between the committees and the Board.

Terms of office follow our fiscal year (July 1–June 30) which means we are beginning to look for interested members to fill openings for our new fiscal year. In addition to ad hoc committees that the Board may appoint from time to time, you are urged to consider joining one of the following: Architectural Control Community Assistance Consumer Referral Election Finance/Budget Food & Beverage Services Golf Advisory Government Affairs Green Energy Landscape Marketing Neighborhood Pride Nominating Posse Properties Tipster Editorial Now is your opportunity to get involved in shaping the future of your community. We urge members to complete and return the committee application form found in this issue or go to the Association website at www. suncity-vistoso.com to complete the form. All members are eligible for committee assignments, even if you are not a full time resident.

Depending on the number of responses, we may not be able to place each interested resident on a committee. Our goal, however, is to build a database of interested volunteers who can step into a committee assignment not only now but also in the future.

The ballots will be tallied Tuesday, March 22, with results to be posted sometime in the afternoon.

The Finance and Budget Committee began working with staff in February to develop the Association budget for 2011-2012. This is a three-draft process, with finalization anticipated at the committee’s March 28 meeting.

Aluminum Can Donations: Put those aluminum cans to work for Sun City Vistoso! Deposit only empty, clean aluminum cans in the box outside the Social Hall kitchen. For safety reasons do not deposit unrinsed cans which attract bees and may become a hazard.

Fiscal year aluminum can receipts reported in February were $2,120; aluminum recycled to date 3,553 lbs.

The Loan Room which is sponsored by the Community Assistance Committee is located at the end of the Cart Barn and has items available for loan to residents of Sun City Vistoso. We carry items for your medical needs in addition to tables and chairs for get-togethers, cots and rollaways, and many children’s items. Reservations can be made by telephone on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays or at the Loan Room when we are open on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This month’s featured artist is Sandy Gates, whose jewelry features stones discovered here in Sun City Vistoso. Sandy says, “In the rough, these stones were hiding among the thousands of rounded river rocks used for landscaping our yards.

“It started with a traditional ‘lucky-stone’ that a neighbor found in her yard—a dark red rock with a white band around it. Now she’s wearing a polished piece of it. Other neighbors started bringing me stones they found in their yards—and that’s how it all started— jewelry made from stones found right here in Sun City Vistoso. Some pieces include Arizona turquoise.”

Participant registration for this year’s Arts and Crafts Festival will be held this month. Check the For Your Information section for date, time, and place. The festival, sponsored by the Gift Shop, will take place on Saturday, October 1, the third year for this great event.

The Green Energy Committee invites anyone interested to participate in helping Sun City Vistoso homeowners learn about energy, water and other conservation subjects. Our topic this month is: Water Harvesting

There are three sources available for being water smart: the University of Arizona, Pima County Extension and Oro Valley Public Library programs.

The State of Arizona offers homeowners tax credits for installing a rainwater or gray water conservation system.

Before installing any of these systems, check with the Architectural Review Committee regarding SCV’s standards for such systems.

The types of plants and building materials used in landscaping can improve the retention of run-off water, which aids our natural aquifer system, and can eliminate the need for an irrigation system or greatly reduce the dependence on one.

The image committee met with the signage vendors on January 26. The vendors brought renderings of their ideas and we were quite pleased with their work. We made some suggestions to each and they are modifying their renderings to be more consistent with our vision. Each vendor has also submitted preliminary quotes for upgrading our two gateways and eight monuments.

Landscape Tut Tustison 825-9431 Third Wednesday, 9 AM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui Mountain Vista Landscape Project Update

Our community has begun a program to update the approximately seventeen acres of common area landscape in Sun City Vistoso. The plan will be carried out over the next eleven years and will be funded from the Asset Reserve. The biggest piece of this program is refreshing the approximately three acres of landscape at Mountain Vista, from Silverton down around Vistoso Center.

Our Board-approved objective is: “Move toward a lower maintenance landscape that is more aesthetically compatible with the natural desert around us and enhances property values.”

As an early part of this project, the Landscape Common Area Subcommittee of the Landscape Committee has narrowed the list of potential landscape architects to do the design at Mountain Vista to three and has Sun City Vistoso Tipster, March 2011

visited several sites of each to see their work. We are also looking at the feasibility of using reclaimed water.

The following design recommendations for Mountain Vista were approved by the Board at their last meeting: - Changes will not be made to the lion’s head fountain.

- The African sumac trees will be removed over time.

These trees are prohibited by Pima County as well as Oro Valley as “an invasive tree with the potential to spread throughout the Town”.

- The fan-tex ash trees southwest of the sports complex will be kept.

- Most of the palm trees will be kept.

An informational presentation to the community about the design is planned once the design is complete.

During the month of February the committee received an excellent response online and via paper flyer. Over 600 responses have been received. The Name Change Committee will be reviewing this data and will be making a report to the community at the March 3 meeting. A second meeting of the committee on March 31 will consider input we have received from focus groups. We will also gather infromation from local political leaders and realtors. We welcome your attendance at these meetings.

Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 825-6994 Third Tuesday, 2 PM, Vistoso Center/Apache Spring Cleaning - Outside

Due to the hard frosts we had last month, much of our foliage was severely damaged. For many of us, spring cleaning of our properties may take more time and effort. For some homeowners, much work will be needed to get yards cleaned up for spring The following are reminders concerning personal yards: • Trees must be trimmed up at least six feet over sidewalks and back to no more than two feet out over street.

• Frost-damaged parts of shrubs need to be cut off and removed.

• Bushes and shrubs are not to extend out over sidewalks, and hedges are not to be over six feet tall.

• Cracks in driveways, sidewalks, and where the cement meets the asphalt in the street are the responsibility of homeowners to keep weed free.

We thank everyone in advance for their hard work in heeding the above items and for continuing to take pride in their property.

The Realty Committee continues meeting weekly. We are dedicated to working toward recommending the most attractive viable option, if any, that generates sustainable income for our community. For that reason, as we reported in the insert to the February Tipster, we are no longer considering a full-service in-house real estate company.

That insert also talked about the information and concerns we heard during our SCV community focus group meetings.

We are in the process of planning and scheduling focus group meetings with members of our local Realtor community. Those meetings are designed to share our thoughts, and to hear and understand their issues, concerns, and ideas.

The Sports Complex Committee continues to meet and evaluate and price alternatives. The pros and cons of each alternative have been discussed. In the next few weeks we will have eliminated all but two alternatives and will report same to The Board of SCV. Strategic Planning Committee (SPC)

All of the Strategic Initiatives (Long Range Plans), previously approved by the Board of Directors, are now in the study/recommendation phase or have been completed. Specials for the month include the popular Pasta Night, Wednesday, March 9 and Soup and Salad Night, Wednesday, March 30. Two special dinners feature a Fish Feast, Friday, March 11, and a Leg of Lamb dinner Friday, March 25. There will also be two special Sunday night dinners on March 6 and 20. Come join us.

This past year the golf course was renamed and opened to the public. This created a need for marketing. A new website was designed and ads created. However, to get the most for our advertising dollars the Internet and email needed to be developed as advertising opportunities.

To this end an email Listserv was created. Through the efforts of the Pro Shop and advertisements on GolfNow, Southern Arizona Tee Times and other areas, the list was created. There are currently around 700 individuals on this list.

Now that we had an email list, a plan to market to them needed to be developed. A weekly email promotional list was created with special offers, tips and information to entice golfers to come in and give us a try. The first email promotional called “Hearts and Clubs,” promoted a 20% sale in the pro shop (30% for annual pass holders). This email was sent to the 700 individuals. We are able to track blast statistics. Of the 700 emails sent on February 9, 47% (315) were opened as of February 10. There were several links on that email for people to delve further into The Views offerings. Those links included the dress code (6 click throughs), reservations (74 click throughs) and our Facebook page (2 click throughs).

This was the first promotional email blast. As future blasts are sent and statistics and responses reviewed, adjustments will be made. However, we feel this will be an effective and economic marketing tool for The Views Golf Club.

The monitor team is hard-working and much appreciated by me. When you walk into your meeting or class and find your room set up, you see the results of a team effort that starts with a setup sheet issued by Coco Sullivan to that facility, read by the monitor and then carried out. We have more and more events and meetings; therefore you may need to wait a few minutes until a room is set up. Don’t come earlier than your scheduled time to allow monitors to do their job. Residents should not be moving tables or chairs. Please thank members of the monitor team for all they do.

Community Services Coordinator

We welcome Jim Cundiff to the position of Community Services Coordinator. Jim has worked in the HOA business, property management and airline customer industry. He will be a friendly face in the office and brings a spirit of cooperation and assistance to the position.

The position has been changed to part-time and the hours open for resident questions and submittals is Monday-Friday, from 10 AM-Noon.

It has been several years since we have had an increase in the price of sale books in the library. We recently surveyed numerous other organizations that have regular sales as we do and have learned that our prices have been far below any of these groups for some time. As a result, we have changed the price of some of our sale books. Used and older books will continue to be $1. Fiction paperback books will remain at 50¢. However, like-new books will be priced as follows: Books in excellent condition with a publication date of 2010/2011 and still available in hardcover at book stores at full price are $4 in SCV Library. Books published in 2009 are $3. All earlier like-new hardcover books remain for sale for $2. Please be aware that our sale price of a $4 per book can cost $4 up to $10 at other book sales. These same books are 40% off their original price at Bookman’s.

We must find ways to earn money in addition to grants from Friends of the Library and our yearly fund raiser programs. The cost of books, audios, films and supplies have increased considerably in the last couple of years. In order to allow us to continue to provide you with the newest available materials, please continue to support the library by taking advantage of our great prices.

March is the month for our buy two and get one free sale (of equal or less value). See you there.

Different types of exercise benefits your health in different ways: Aerobic activities like running, biking and swimming strengthen your heart and increase your endurance.

Strength training like weight lifting or resistance training builds muscle and bone mass, improves balance and prevents falls. It’s one of the best counters to frailty in old age.

Flexibility exercises like stretching and yoga help prevent injury, enhance range of motion, reduce stiffness, and limit aches and pains.

At first, just focus on getting any kind of exercise, whatever it may be. As exercising becomes your habit, try adding variety. If you keep at it, the benefits of exercise will begin to pay off.

March is a busy month as we will have the Guys & Dolls Tournament for the 9-Hole Clubs, Men’s 18-Hole Club Championship, Ladies 18-Hole Club Championship, Ladies 9-Hole invitational.

March is also preparation month for the upcoming Member/Guest events. It is also the time when warmer weather begins to arrive, bringing out even more walkers and riders. Please remember that we will move the tee times back one half-hour.

If you are a renter or a new home owner in Sun City Vistoso, please play our magnificent Greg Nash-designed 18-Hole championship golf course. Check out our fully stocked Pro Shop and talk with our staff about potential annual pass opportunities for golf. Try out our driving range to get you started. A small basket of balls costs $4 and a large basket is $6. Remember, we do not allow denim, t-shirts, athletic shorts or halter tops on our driving range or course.

During the summer months, Rick Sample and I will be offering clinics for beginners or for those of you who have given up the game and want to start playing again.

It is a great opportunity to play this wonderful game.

Rick and I are both PGA members, and we offer halfhour lessons for $40 and 45-minute lessons for $55.

The concern comes in late March or early April if there are enough carbohydrates left in the Bermuda grass to become green again. With all our efforts to improve summer transition, this extreme winter is not making anything easy. Hopefully, March will become and stay warm.

It is nice to see ideas grow into positive change. At the Golf Advisory committee meeting in January, someone mentioned how difficult it was to get into the phone line to find out if there was going to be a frost delay. One of the golf clubs mentioned that they had one person who called in and then sent emails to their entire club. We discussed several other ways of doing this to get the information out in a timely manner. About a week later, there was information from Sun City Vistoso that if we wanted to be included on an email list, they would send us any frost delay information each morning. It is so nice to be able to open an email and find out before 7 AM if there is a frost delay that morning. Michael Kropf had an open mind about change, and he immediately implemented this idea. For those of you who don’t yet use this service, you can go to the Sun City Vistoso website under “News and Information,” click on “In The Know” and follow the instructions to sign up for Golf Information.

The weather this winter has been very unique. Last winter we received over six inches of rain, and the temperatures were fairly moderate. So far this winter, the rain totals are a little over an inch and the temperatures have ranged from almost ninety degrees in the middle of December to the teens in January and February.

The severe temperature changes this winter have had a detrimental impact on the golf course turf. The Bermuda grass is very sensitive to soil temperature changes. When the soil warms, the Bermuda grass becomes more active and tries to come out of dormancy.

This process requires energy which the plant gains from stored carbohydrates in the roots. The carbohydrates lead to green leaf development usually seen in the spring. In contrast, when the soil temperatures are cold the Bermuda grass decreases its activities and tries to pull these carbohydrates from the leaves to store in the roots usually occurring in the fall.

February’s weather created challenges for completing the Governors Cup. The final round was played Wednesday, February 9. Congratulations to the three flight, two-man team winners. Next up is the Member/ Guest Tournament, the crown jewel event of the year.

Details for this exciting tournament have been mailed to the membership. Completed registration form and fee are due Tuesday, March 1.

Our 9-Hole club plays every Thursday morning with an 8 AM start time. Please arrive and check in at least one half hour prior. The Pro Shop staff needs this time to confirm all sign-ups are present and/or to adjust the pairings.

Our club now has a membership of 74 players and is still growing. We are guys who keep score of both our golf strokes and our club friends. We have burger bashes, tournaments and other social events that add to our camaraderie.

The annual Guys and Dolls event will be held March 10. The Dolls are the hosts this year headed up by Chairwoman Ruth Bonfiglio. Sign up in the front of our Pro Shop book and place your $13 check (lunch onlyno golf $10) in the check folder by Thursday, March 3.

Make your checks out to SCVWNHGC. The fee covers lunch (hot dog bar), beer, wine, soda and prizes.

Coupons Are Valued by Overseas Troops

Have you wished you could do something for our troops overseas? Have you wished your unused and expired grocery store coupons could be put to a good use? There is a group of volunteers which operates a program called OCP (Overseas Coupon Program) which will fill both of these wishes.

Military commissaries accept coupons up to six months after they expire. The OCP’S website, www. ocpnet.org, provides the names and addresses of overseas bases which would be happy to receive your coupons, current and expired. The expense is the same as mailing domestically. If you choose to send the entire newspaper insert, the post office has an envelope or box which can be mailed for $4.95, any weight.

Since the program is run entirely by volunteers, however, they appreciate it if you cut out the coupons and separate them into grocery and personal/nongrocery items because they can distribute them to the families more quickly. Also, because they volunteer their time, you may not get a receipt or thank you.

Three local authors will discuss their work. They are: Victor Lodato whose Mathilda Savitch won the Barnes & Noble Outstanding Novel award in 2009; Lydia Millet, who has written several novels and short story collections, will discuss her most recent publication, Love and Infant Monkeys, which satirizes celebrities and their animals; Lydia Otero, whose recently published La Calle documents the Tucson Mexican-American community’s tragic experience with urban renewal during the 1960s. AARP Safe Drive Class

Another AARP Driver Safety Class will be presented on Friday, March 18, 8:30AM to 12:30PM (4 hour class) at the Oro Valley Police Dept. Training Room. The AARP Driver Safety Program is the nation’s first and largest refresher course for drivers age 50 and older that has helped millions of drivers remain safe on today’s roads.

AARP has offered the course in the classroom for 25 years. Many insurance companies offer a discount to drivers who have completed the course. The fee is $14 ($12 for AARP members). Space is limited, so please call Hal Dieterle at 825-1110 to register.

Bus Service to Tucson Symphony Next Season?

There will be a meeting Wednesday, March 16, 10:30 AM, Social Hall/Navajo for all persons interested in having bus transportation to the Tucson Symphony Orchestra for either the Pops or Classic performances or both for next season. Since there will no longer be bus service provided by the Tucson Symphony for our Sun City Vistoso music lovers, we as a group must arrange for bus service to the performances ourselves.

Depending on the size of the group, it is looking quite favorable that we will be able to arrange bus service for a quite reasonable price. Please come to this meeting if you are interested in the TSO performances next season and want to have bus transportation to and from each performance.

Arts & Crafts Festival 2011 Registration

The Gift Shop-sponsored Arts and Crafts Festival 2011 will take place on Saturday, October 1. Registration for this event will be Tuesday, March 15, 8-10 AM and March 22, 2-3 PM, Social Hall/Navajo. A $20 advertising fee will be charged for each table or space.

This fee will aid the Festival’s advertising campaign.

Our talented residents and good advertising equals a successful show. Only Sun City Vistoso residents may have tables. Registration forms will be available in the Gift Shop starting March 1.

SCV Fire Station Closed Until May

The Sun City Golder Ranch Firehouse moved into a villa in Splendido, the continuing care retirement community on Rancho Vistoso, while their permanent residence is under construction. Ironically, the Sun City fire house is being brought up to fire code with the installation of sprinkler systems.

Captain Shaun Greener said, “We really like being in a location where we can be as unobtrusive as possible and still be able to perform our duties. Being at Splendido is an ideal solution for us.”

Golder Ranch Chief Sue Clark expects repairs to the Sun City house to be finished by May 1.

For general visitation, blood pressure checks, etc., residents may go to the next closest station at 12125 N. Woodburne in Rancho Vistoso, near 1st and Tangerine.

Name Change Focus Groups Sought

The Name Change Ad Hoc Committee was assigned to study the benefits and disadvantages of the name “Sun City” and ascertain whether use of “A Del Webb Community” is possible. They want to hear residents’ perceptions, concerns, comments, questions or ideas.

However, the focus groups will not be a time for debate or questions. Please register to participate in a focus group by going to www.suncity-vistoso.com, clicking on News & Information and then Events. Select the day you wish to participate in the focus group and fill out the registration form.

Celebrations And Life Events Phyllis Cutcher had two of her pastel paintings accepted into the Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance show. One of the paintings, “Afternoon Shadows”, won an honorable mention. The show will be on view at Ventana Medical, through March 21.

Marble of the National Solar Observatory, UofA, on “Cosmic Mirages: The Most Widely Separated Gravitationally Lensed QSOs.” Thursday, March 10, the afternoon astronomy club video presentations begins a new series, “Black Holes Explained”. The lecturer is Professor Alex Filippenko, who has a PhD from Cal Tech and is currently teaching at UC Berkeley. The Berkeley students have voted him Best Professor six times. These video lectures take place at 4 PM in the Social Hall/Kachina Lounge every Thursday, except club meeting days.

Our Valentines Day luncheon was held at the Olive Garden Restaurant with entertainment by Aloha Country Sounds and Friends. Dave Heaps, a member of the Vistoso Cyclists, surprised the group by dancing his rendition of the Hawaiian War Chant. Our retiring social director, Pam Brunk, was surprised with a departing gift and an original limerick written by member Don Piele.

Starting time for March is 8:30 AM. Meet in front of the Barnet Eye Center, Mountain View Plaza. We ride 25+ miles at a comfortable pace, and all rides include a stop for snacks and beverages. Everyone must wear a helmet and bring sufficient water. The monthly breakfast ride is Wednesday, March 30, to Cattleman’s Cafe, Avra Valley, at Wentz and KirbyHughes roads. We leave MVP at 8:30 AM. Optional: Transport your bike to Dove Mountain.

Our February meeting found the members very engaged by Stieg Larsson’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. After enthusiastic discussion, lead by Eileen Rotman, the club pronounced this novel a great success. Members also liked the rest of Larsson’s Millenium Trilogy.

At the March meeting, Sharyn Rafieyan leads our exploration of Kathryn Stockett’s best seller The Help. It’s about life in Mississippi in the 1960s. The film version of The Help is scheduled for release in August. In the meantime, if you can handle some controversy, read this one and come to the March meeting.

The April meeting will examine Olive Kitteridge, a novel by Elizabeth Strout. Jayne Kunnemeier will lead the discussion.

At our February 9 meeting, we had a very exciting program with the U.S. Border Patrol.

Agents Steve Saldana and Corina Robinson spoke about the Border Patrol’s history and current activities, especially on the southern Arizona border. They described the guns they use and the guns carried by the drug dealers and “coyotes” that the Agents face in their duties.

The Gun Club is for people who have an interest in learning about guns, shooting, personal protection and firearm safety. In fact, you do not even need to own a gun or have any experience with firearms to come to Gun Club meetings. We especially invite women who are interested in learning about firearms safety and self-protection, with or without a gun. People are frequently interested in learning the laws and regulations about carrying a gun and what is required to obtain an Arizona Concealed Weapons Permit. Club members are encouraged to bring any new or interesting guns/accessories to the meeting for people to see or any guns they want to sell/trade. For safety, any gun brought to the meeting needs to be unloaded and have a trigger lock. You are invited to come to a meeting and see if our club activities would interest you. Club members often shoot Thursday afternoons (October-May) and Thursday mornings (June-September) at Pima Pistol Range.

Fran Pendrys and her sister-in-law won a gold medal in their age group. The next day Fran and Ed Pendrys won the silver in their age group. The Pickleball Club is very proud of their efforts.

A fine time was had by all at the February open play and potluck. Besides being quite good pickleball players, we are good cooks as well.

It is very interesting to see how good many of our players have become in this second year of pickleball.

I would like to thank all who participated in our annual social in January. Twenty members feasted on the abundance of gourmet foods on tables decorated with poinsettias and candlelight. A special thanks to those behind the scenes (spouses, etc.) who prepared most of the food.

On January 21 we held the second annual Bob Johns Memorial Omaha Tournament. Tournament Director David Habbershaw reports: But the number of players was down from last year, with players’ buy-ins and re-buys and contributions from Ruth and other members of Bob’s family, $435 was raised for the Kidney Foundation. Special thanks to Ode Satterfield and Joe Larmand who both donated their winnings to the Foundation. Ode took first place, Bob was second and Joe was third. Honorable mention to Phillip Rose who placed fourth.

The trip to the Tubac Art Show was enjoyed by 11 rigs, 22 people and uncounted pets. Shopping, offroadng, golfing, dining and great hospitality were enjoyed by all.

The February meeting featured Ken MacRae of Ken’s RV Repair. He spoke on a potpourri of RV maintenance topics which enlightened both the seasoned traveler and the neophyte.

At our March meeting, Camping World has been invited to discuss the latest RV gadgets as well as hopefully display some of their newer RV models and trailers. Members wishing to sell their rigs will be invited to display them as well. This is a great opportunity to buy a quality product at a great price.

The end of February over 20 members visited Casa de Los Niños. This loving temporary home for children was an eye opener for all. Those children are the reason we sew children’s tops, shorts, skirts, pants, pajamas, dresses, smocks, bags, bibs, quilts and other small items all year long. Our assembly line works efficiently. Sheets are needed, so if you find extras in your linen closet please bring them to the Sewing Room.

Quilt top packaged kits are now available to sew at home, which are easy projects, with straight sewing.

In 2010 we sewed 209 pet beds for the Humane Society. By cutting up scraps of fabrics that otherwise would be thrown away, we sew sturdy pillow cases and stuff them with scraps and polyester fiberfil. However, we do need more fabric scraps and polyester fiberfil.

So if you are sewing, save the leftovers and bring them to the Sewing Room marked Pet Beds or call Jan Bohe for other arrangements. The fiberfil can be purchased at any fabric store or WalMart. We invite you to join us Tuesday afternoons for a good time.

Great news from our team’s participation in Tucson Senior Olympic Swim Championships in January. We won first place in the small team division!

The team consisted of Bob Sartoris, Dick Agricola, 2 gold medals; Joe Bolze, 4 gold medals; Gordon Gillin, 4 gold medals; Corinna Goodman, 4 gold medals; Jo Greene, 2 gold medals; Dave Goodman, 1 silver medal and 1 bronze medal. Great going, team!

The team had a victory celebration at Metro Grill after the meet. Our last meet of the season will be at Green Valley on Saturday, March 19. Results will be posted in the May Tipster. Joe and Sandie Bolze will host a luncheon after the meet at the Desert Diamond Casino.

A final swim training clinic at our Sports Complex Pool will be Friday, March 11, 2-4 PM. We will be training for the 2012 season in December 2011. New swimmers need to sign up with Gordon Gillin. Watch for further announcements.

Not all poems are ponderous, but they do make the author reflect. As we read and discuss our poetry, we consider what the writer meant to convey and if the words selected have been successful. Our intent is always to be helpful as we offer our suggestions, and we value the opinions of everyone in the group. Newcomers are welcome to participate.
