From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community.

All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Your Responsibility to the SCOV Community

by Tim Kelley The first of February will begin the campaign and election process in SCOV. The ballots will be available on February 18, and voting will end at Noon on March 23. Results will be announced the morning of March 24.

As a member in good standing of the SCOV community, you are entitled to cast one vote per household in the election. As a member you have a right and responsibility to vote on the candidates and issues. Your responsibility means that you should become informed on the candidates and issues.

The Election Committee will be providing you with opportunities to learn about the candidates running for the Board of Directors (Board). This year you will be electing two new Board members who will serve a three-year term. (The terms of John Wilson and Tim Kelley are ending on April 30.)

You can learn about the candidates in several ways: 1) Tipster articles; 2) Candidate inserts in the Tipster; 3) Interview videos posted to the website; and 4) Candidate forums held in the Auditorium. All of these are hosted and organized by the Election Committee. The fifth opportunity will be neighborhood “candidate coffees” hosted by individual residents. Please take advantage and become informed.

Board members approve the SCOV budgets, make many decisions amending and establishing policies that affect SCOV and, given the number and magnitude of potential renovation and capital projects on the list of the Long-Range Planning Committee, Board members will be making significant decisions about the future of SCOV. Forums for this year’s ballot issues are scheduled for Tuesday, February 11, 9 AM and 6 PM, Thursday, February 13, 6 PM and Friday, February 14, 1 PM, all of which are in the Auditorium. These forums are your opportunity to be informed such that you can cast a reasoned ballot.

Members have a responsibility to vote for the candidates and issues that are the best for our SCOV community.

Moving Forward I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season. It is said, if you’re not moving forward, you’re going backward. Here at SCOV we are definitely moving forward. Here are some of the things that are being worked on.

• At a special Board meeting in October, a report was given by the Long Range Planning Committee that included a proposed land use plan for the community and the Board looked at the possible purchase of the Mountain View Plaza.

• Requests for Proposal were sent to five contractors for the Golf Course Greens project.

• The Golf Course purchased 20 new golf carts to keep up with the amount of golfers; also, a device designed to reduce the water bill at the golf course could save as much as $25,000 per year.

• I worked with a company to negotiate a profitable preferred provider agreement with Comcast. This would require a vote of the community to approve letting the Association contract for 10 years allowing Comcast to be called our Preferred Provider. This would not change residents’ ability to contract with whatever company they want for their internet, cable and TV services and would come at no charge to SCOV. ▪ Comcast would not be able to raise rates specifically to SCOV residents based on SCOV entering into this agreement.

▪ SCOV would not be able to promote other providers or enter into a bulk agreement with another provider (a bulk agreement would require all SCOV owners to use a particular service).

▪ 25% of the new revenue would go to the company that helped negotiate the agreement.

▪ Compensation to the community would come in two forms: Up front over $400,000 and revenue share based on market saturation, currently valued at over $100,000 per year for the length of the 10 year contract.

▪ More information will follow as well as community forums I’ve shared a few ideas that have progressed to action or possible action. We are definitely not standing still, nor are we moving backward. We are pressing forward and doing our best to make this community better, if that is even possible. When you drive your car, most of your time is looking forward and a very little is spent looking in the rear view mirror. As we drive the Sun City Oro Valley limousine, we call an Association, we are looking forward as well. We are always trying to anticipate what will be around the next corner and we are filled with anticipation and excitement.

As we approach this new year, I wish us all the success we so strive for in Sun City Oro Valley and in our personal lives.

Signs are posted at the entrance of each cart crossing location. When walking, all consideration must be provided to the paying golfers for this offering to remain beneficial to all. Bicycles, rollerblades and skateboards are not permitted on the golf course at any time. See below for information on after hours dog walking on the golf course path.

You may take your dog too. Dogs may be in a golf cart or walked on the golf course during the hours posted for walkers before and after golf. Keep your dogs on a leash that is no more than six feet long and under the control of a responsible adult. No retractable leashes, please. Walk your dogs on or as near to the golf cart path as practical and in the rough (higher cut grass). Keep dogs off the golf course greens, fairways, tee boxes, bunkers or construction areas.

Individuals walking dogs, please pick up after the dogs and properly dispose of any dog waste. Please take your pup home if they are causing a disturbance such as frequently barking or being aggressive toward other animals and/or people. Remember that you are walking at your own risk, so please be careful.

Take in the views and our special relationship with the wildlife. Enjoy this beautiful amenity.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 New Year, New Exercise It’s a new year, and maybe you’ve resolved to start an exercise program. If so, good for you. Getting regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do. And it’s one of the most common New Year’s resolutions among Americans each year. Just make sure you start off on the right foot with these helpful tips: Take it slow, set small goals – after all, you’re in this for a lifetime. Talk to your doctor before getting started, especially if it’s been 8-12 months or longer since you’ve last exercised, you’ve had a large weight gain or you’ve had a noticeable change in health.

Evaluate your personality. Do you like to exercise alone, in a large group or with a partner? The answer to this question will help you decide what type of exercise will keep you motivated to stick with your new routine.

Be safe. If you’re exercising outside, make safety a priority. Dress for the weather, wear reflectors and light colors if you’ll be out when it’s dark, and carry a cell phone with you.

The Architectural Compliance Team (ACT) inspects residential properties to ensure adherence to the Development Standards. All exterior areas of the property are checked.

Some examples are walls, gates, fences, paint and stucco, landscaping, windows and screens, flat work, lighting, shutters and shades. Mandatory inspections are done at time of listing the property for sale. Areas not in compliance are listed in the resale demand and compliance report from the title company. Courtesy Inspections are done at the request of property owners thinking about selling or those who are just curious about their compliance. No records are kept by SCOV on deficiencies or actions taken on Courtesy Inspections.

The team is staffed by eight resident volunteers and a staff liaison. Meetings are open to all residents with minutes published on the SCOV website.

We keep in touch with the Town of Oro Valley on changes to local zoning codes. We always welcome input from our residents. The ARC meetings are open to all residents. Monday, January 27, is the committee’s next scheduled meeting. Committee agendas, minutes and financial reports are posted on the SCOV members-only website.

The 2020-2021 SCOV Association’s annual operating and capital acquisition budgeting process begins in January. The process starts with department managers developing forecasts for operations and capital expenditures. Staff budget proposals are then reviewed by the General Manager and Controller to develop the draft budget. The first draft of the budget will be presented at the Finance-Budget Committee meeting, Monday, February 24, 2 PM. Any additions or changes recommended during this meeting are used to develop a second draft, which will be presented and discussed at the committee’s special budget meeting, Monday, March 2, 2 PM. If a third draft is needed, it will be reviewed by the committee on Monday, March 23, 2 PM. The committee will then forward its budget recommendations to the Board. The proposed annual budget will be presented to the Board of Directors at its Thursday, April 9, study session. The budget, with any Board changes, will be placed on the Board’s agenda for approval during its April 28 meeting.

Joe Bourne, Oro Valley icon crooner, is a regular the fourth Monday of each month in the dining room. Saturday date nights in February will feature returning entertainer, Rene Taylor, jazz singer, along with Scott Tecca, an award-winning vocalist from Nashville. A new digital sound system has been approved and is currently being configured. The terrace has permanent heaters and, with the screens, provides a nice atmosphere for listening in colder weather. The patio has more portable heaters and with a temporary adjunct speaker system, entertainment provides a nice background for conversation. You can help control noise: ask your friends to use their inside voices to help everyone enjoy their restaurant experience.

Charlotte paints what intrigues her in the movement and arrangement found in nature. Her paintings come to life as she invites the viewer to take a closer look. Charlotte has been painting in her studio since 2007. She is a juried member of Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild and a member of Southern Arizona Arts Guild.

Don is known for his food-safe wooden bowls and platters that feature intricate designs created with different colors and varieties of wood. When you feel one of these bowls, you get an appreciation for the quality of his work and his meticulous attention to detail. This fall, I was pleased to attend the most recent Oro Valley Police Department Citizen Academy. It was once a week for three hours and packed with information. I was struck by many things. Many of the officers have been on the job for years. They come from a variety of other law enforcement agencies/ backgrounds and a few started with OVPD. There is a wealth of cross training within the department. It’s obvious that officers and staff take pride in their jobs and are part of what makes Oro Valley the safest city in Arizona. Chief Danny Sharp and his department are committed to their “Partnership in Prevention.”

Chief Sharp dedicated himself to the SCOV Posse. He will retire February 21 (See Coming Events, January 23, page 14.) He should take immense pride in his accomplishments.

The officers and staff he leaves behind have his same dedication to community policing. Thank you, Chief Sharp, for your 20 years of support to the Posse.

PREVAIL Task Force is in the final stages of refining a workable process for evaluating the extent to which a homeowner’s proposal to construct a permanent improvement would impact the neighbors’ views. We are hopeful that we will be able to field test the process over the coming months.

The next step for the Task Force is to consider vegetation and its impact on views in SCOV. The goal is to identify a consistent, workable process for handling differences of opinion in this area. The meetings are open to all.

The Properties Committee had an active 2019. Activities included regular Chalk Creek Wash and facilities inspections in addition to monitoring the solar systems serving SCOV owned facilities. Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063 Happy New Year. January is the time of year when the normal activities in the golf course maintenance department really slow down. The cooler temperatures decrease the growth rate of the grass so the amount of turf maintenance is greatly reduced. Less fertilizer and water are required for maintaining good turf health. This allows our department to catch up on other areas of the golf course that we don’t get to spend a lot of time on during the rest of the year.

Some of the projects that are going to be addressed during this time will be: Thinning the desert around the driving range floor so the Pro Shop can recover lost range balls, thinning vegetation in front of tees to open views and hitting areas and root pruning around tee boxes that continually have turf issues due to tree root competition.

More drainage projects will be completed this year to improve playing conditions, and to provide tie-ins for the upcoming greens reconstruction project. Chronic wet areas around the greens will have drains run into washes and desert areas. One example is the left side of hole #1 green between the apron and the three trees in the rough. It is always a problem spot, so a drain will be run from the wet spot into the wash. When the contractor runs the new drains for hole #1 green, they will connect to our drain which will save time and money on the overall project.

We hope you had a wonderful holiday season. It’s going to be another exciting season at The Views Golf Club.

This month, we host the Oro Valley Senior Championship, January 11-12. The event will draw some of the finest players around the southwest, as well as higher handicap golfers who enjoy competitive play.

There are three divisions to the tournament, championship, playing gross only, the other two paying gross and net.

Saturday, January 18, 11 AM-3 PM, is our annual Helicopter Ball Drop, along with Demo Day. We provide a great barbecue at the driving range with music and fun. The following golf club companies will attend: Cobra, Srixon, Cleveland, XXIO, Ping, TaylorMade and Henry Griffiths.

The Helicopter Ball Drop is a 50/50 fundraiser for the men’s and women’s golf clubs. To participate, purchase at least one golf ball for $10, three for $50 or 15 balls for $100.

They will be dropped at approximately 1 PM onto the driving range.

You can purchase golf balls anytime up until Friday, January 17, 5 PM in the Pro Shop or through the men’s and women’s golf clubs. The three balls closest to the pin are winners.

After distribution of the 50/50 split, first place receives 50 percent of the prize fund; second place, 30 percent; third place 20 percent. The total number of balls sold will determine the prize fund distribution.

Wishing you a Happy New Year. As your new year’s resolutions may have included getting out more to practice at the driving range, our golf superintendent will be replacing the tee boxes with grass mats from time to time. This is needed to help preserve the grass and give it a chance to grow back.

This may not be ideal, but please be patient.

Make your golf cart invisible. Your goal when driving a cart should be to leave no trace you were there. It’s easy to damage the turf and not realize it. Avoid wet areas and spots that are getting beaten up from traffic. Take different routes so cart traffic is spread out.

We encourage all golfers to attend our meetings for questions and concerns regarding play and course management.

However, there will be no meeting this January. Meetings will resume the first Wednesday in February, 2 PM, WC3.

With the new year upon us, things are rolling right along with gross sales over $30K weekly.

We have newly installed gas heaters on the terrace, which, with the second wind screen makes that area usable and more comfortable during the colder months. The portable heaters are now on the patio.

Two new outdoor server stations are also on the terrace and patio, allowing wait staff to provide you with more timely service.

You asked us for new offerings on the happy hour menu.

Due to space constraints, some popular items needed to be retired to make room for newer ones. This does not mean they are gone forever. It was a tough decision to remove popular items, but we hope you will try the new ones and give us feedback.

This month’s staff introduction is Jeremy Lee. Many of you know him as the cheery bartender who works Sunday through Wednesday. There is a lot more to him than that.

Jeremy has worked in hospitality for 23 years. He has done everything from serving and bartending to being the banquet director for the Hassayampa Inn in Prescott, AZ. Although Jeremy has lived all over the country, he grew up in Prescott.

His passion in life is his Harley Davidson and riding it when weather permits. His unseen talent is that he can do calculus in his head. His dream in life is to never have to work again.

Our featured artist this month is our new president, Charlotte Landis, who came here in 2016 from Arlington, Virginia.

Her background is medical technology with an emphasis in chemistry. Her interest in chemical elements and their reactions led her to watercolors, and her interest from childhood in gardening inspired her to become a master gardener.

Painting since 2006, Charlotte always sees the blank watercolor paper as a source of excitement and hopes the work uplifts the viewer’s spirit and gives a sense of peace. She strives to invite the viewer to take a closer look by choosing to paint small things.

Charlotte is a member of the Potomac Valley Watercolorists in Virginia, the Southern Arizona Art Guild and the Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild. She is an award winning artist who has shown in many exhibitions.

Watch for her work in the exhibits in SCOV, and come visit with Charlotte and the other artists.

At our annual Thimblenas meeting in December, our club reported that in this past year, we provided 2,700 items to various community organizations for One of the quilts donated to Teen Outreach Pregnancy children at risk. Services Kudos to all our members who work hard sewing every week with several members taking items home to work on. It’s truly a labor of love. There are eight different organizations that we donate to and I can’t tell you how appreciative they are. It’s clubs like ours that keep these organizations going. Dr. Ertel is known worldwide and has lectured at conferences around the globe. His topic will be “The Night Sky of Planet Vulcan: Exozodiacal Light Observations of the Large Binocular Telescope.” One of his major research interests is the formation and evolution of planets and planetary systems. He specializes in using a wide range of instruments at the Large Binocular Telescope located on Mt. Graham in Safford, AZ. This is the largest binocular telescope in the world and a place where our club has taken field trips.

Aqua Tone is a toning water workout that incorporates a variety of rhythmic body movements performed in the water.

This aquatic exercise class enhances cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance.

We meet Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 9 AM in the winter, 8 AM in the summer at the AFC pool. There is no fee to join the club or the class. The teachers are club member volunteers. Being able to do a basic swim stroke is very helpful. Items used in the class are buoys, boards, noodles, balls and a fitness band. Most are available at the pool. A band can be purchased from Marcia for $5. We assign an experienced member to a newcomer to help with learning the various movements. You will get a good workout in a fun class.

We ride year-round to preplanned destinations in Tucson and surrounding areas, using both city streets and dedicated bike paths. Occasional away rides start from a distant location. Weekly mountain bike options take a few of us to the beautiful Tortolita rangelands, containing some of the highest-rated single track bike trails in the nation. Our group ride options are from 25-50 miles, and we always make time for a coffee stop midway. Those who ride with the Women on Wheels group have their own agenda providing routes of 12-30 miles.

We sponsor social events, participate in Wheels for Kids charity and are involved with fundraising for the Interfaith Community Food Bank, raising over $43,000 last year.

Wheels for Kids is a 501(c)(3) charity dedicated to providing rehabbed bicycles for kids in need in the Tucson area.

To date, we’ve provided over 2,200 bikes to various other 501(c)(3) charities who then distribute the bikes to their clients. Some of our partner organizations are Youth On Their Own, El Grupo, Refugee Focus and Tucson Boys and Girls Club. Wheels for Kids is a total volunteer effort. We need mechanics.
