From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community.

All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

by Susan Jakosa Every new year, our community has continued to move forward due to our residents, committees and staff. Houses are enhanced and improved by residents and all committees follow their Charters working diligently to benefit, update, improve and promote our community. Over 700 submittals have been processed in the last 12 months by the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) and the Community Services Coordinator. This could be why 224 homes have been sold from November 2015 through October 2016.

Also, ARC is now available monthly at 9:15 AM on each second and fourth Wednesday in the Activity Center/Kachina Lounge to provide residents advice and/or information pertaining to updating/maintaining their homes according to the Development Standards.

Another standing committee, Properties, will significantly reduce our energy costs by undertaking the Solar project.

Additionally, a number of ad hoc committees established by the Board of Directors have made numerous accomplishments including: • Renovation of our restaurant and addition of the lounge and terrace by The Views Restaurant and Lounge Implementation Task Team, an incredible/time consuming job.

• Creation of the new Master Declaration and Bylaws by the Governing Documents Review committee, doing multiple years of work prior to resident approval.

• The Desert Oasis Renovation committee continues to work on establishing Desert Oasis future improvements.

• After much work, the General Manager Search committee provided the Board with a list of possible managers for SCOV that the Board voted upon.

• Lastly, but probably not least, another ad hoc committee will be created this year to plan the Activity Center renovations.

In 2017, consider getting involved in SCOV. Learn something new. Attend some committee meetings or even volunteer for one. Our website calendar lists the date, time and location for all committee meetings.

General Manager - Mark Wade mwade@suncityorovalley.com 917-8080 After more than a month of anticipation and waiting to formally join SCOV, I am thrilled to be here and have experienced an overwhelmingly wonderful welcome from the Board of Directors, staff and many residents as well as the Mayor and several of the Town Council. There has been one introduction after another to so many warm and kind people that it’s difficult to imagine. While all the communities I have worked for have had significant membership participation, SCOV’s level of volunteerism and willingness to assist is unusually amazing. At this point, the only thing I ask is please do not test me on all the names.

Now that I’ve completed my first week on the job, my thoughts have been confirmed that Sun City has an excellent President and Board of Directors, management team and staff. The workload is significant, and I expect it will take some time to wrap my arms around the workings and issues of our community. Mr. Mariani has done a wonderful job for SCOV, and I hope to be able to keep the operations running smoothly with the help of great staff and expert advice from those of you in the community who are willing to share your wisdom and knowledge. There is no doubt that I have my work cut out for me, but by assuming a workload that is in good order and well organized, I expect to be successful. It is this type of excellence in management, the extensive volunteerism such as that displayed by members of the many organizations, the financial strength of the Association, the quality of the community and the beautiful area that drew me to this position and great community.

During my first week of assuming the General Manager’s duties, I’ve had the pleasure of attending several meetings, such as the Posse, Golf Advisory and AFC Committees and my first Board Session, all of which have been a learning experience.

I will be taking some time and evaluating facilities and operations over the next several months. I will be talking to the residents and gathering input so I may fully understand how best to serve you. As I become better acquainted with you, the staff and I will be better situated to serve you. As always, I will keep you updated to the best of my ability.

Again, I am very pleased to have the fortune to be your General Manager and to live in such a beautiful area. I truly look forward to meeting and working with you for many years to come.

The Magic of Glass: A Unique SCOV Opportunity

M

any active adult communities have facilities such as swimming pools, exercise equipment, auditoriums, club meeting rooms, libraries, etc. We, however, in addition, have something rather unique: a Studio where residents can make mesmerizingly beautiful objects from stained and/or fused glass. You don’t know how? No problem. Club members regularly give beginner classes for a fraction of the cost one would pay elsewhere, plus all the glass and supplies are included. Jeff Puskas, our previous treasurer, believes that, “First timers will be amazed at the wonderful results they can get on their first try. The club has excellent teachers and they won’t let you fail. It’s one of the friendliest clubs in Sun City.” Members delight and impress their family and friends with handmade glass gifts.

Unlike many clubs, it is unusual if a resident has had much or any prior experience. Before moving here I had never cut a piece of glass.

Now, I’ve made and installed 9 windows in our home. All one has to do is drive around, especially at night, to see the beautiful windows that have been made by club members.

All these stained glass windows have made SCOV an even more attractive place to live. As that famous line goes on television selling pitches, “But wait, there’s more!” Stained glass is actually more versatile than one might think. Our members make many other objects like lamps, picture frames, book ends, clocks, night lights, jewelry, jewelry boxes, candle holders, sun catchers, holiday ornaments, display pieces, and in a workshop given by member, John Beamish, we even made three-dimensional geese with moveable hinged wings.

The fastest growing interest area in the club, however, has been fused glass. One of the club’s founding members, Wye Mace, and her friend Doris Larsen (now Doris Ray), started taking lessons at a store. Then they got Sun City to purchase a kiln that is necessary for firing the pieces and then taught club members how to do it. Now the club has three kilns, and a number of members have even bought their own. While fused glass can be combined with stained glass to make striking pieces, it is more often used by itself

to produce objects for adornment like earrings and necklaces or highly functional, but eye catching, functional objects like plates and bowls. Sometimes the glass pieces are combined with beads, wood, and metal with spectacular results. The possibilities are only limited by one’s imagination. That is also where the club members come in as idea generators, workshop presenters, encouragers, supporters and maybe most importantly as friends. It is like being in a large family where each sibling turns around to help take care of and nurture the younger ones. Nancy Eckhoff, our volunteer Studio Manager, has commented, “Not only is fusing glass and making stained glass fun, but I’ve made some awesome friends.”

People can’t believe that the club’s annual membership dues, of only ten dollars, not only allows use of all the studio equipment but includes virtually unlimited firing. One of the fused glass volunteer monitors and instructors, Juliet Williams, told me that she began fused glass in 2010 and “still can’t wait to see how my creation looks when it comes out of the kiln.” The kiln-loading and firing, like all club activities, is done by club members generously volunteering their time and expertise.

Not only does the Studio contain a small library, all the needed equipment and tools, some basic supplies for sale, photo albums of completed projects, but there are also monitors with set times to lend assistance. One just needs to bring their purchased glass to launch into a new project. Another wonderful feature is that there is a keypad on the door that allows members to come and go on their own time schedule thus early birds and night owls are equally accommodated. One can swim, attend an Institute of Learning in Retirement class, play golf or tennis in the morning or afternoon and still come to the Studio after lunch or dinner.

Of course it’s not all creative work and no play. There are annual social events for members and significant others like our Spring Fling and the December Ornament Exchange. Drop by and see what all the excitement is about.

One of the sections is called This & That, which is our version of Miscellaneous. If you need to change your address (leaving for the summer, returning for the winter) there’s an easy form to fill out. Need a new nametag? There’s a form to print and bring in with your $8 or mail to our vendor. This is the place to nominate Board candidates (we’re done with that for this year). If you want to pay your dues online this is where that can be done. And, if you ever have questions about the Town of Oro Valley, this is where the constituent coordinator’s email address is located. What will this year bring to you? I am wishing for a happy and healthy year for all SCOV residents. Always know that there are plenty of groups/clubs to join and stay active. If you can devote a bit more time, being a committee member might be just the thing for you. To stay active you must be active. Why not try some of our classes at the Aquatic and Fitness Center?

There are classes to suit all. You might make a daily trip to the gym and workout by yourself. With all that SCOV has to offer, it will help make 2017 a better year for you.

Heroes Among Us Nominations Sought The Board of Directors is requesting residents to submit candidates for the Heroes Among Us award. This award is designed to honor residents who make remarkable contributions to our community. Nominations should be submitted by Sunday, January 15 by filling out a hard copy of the form available in the Administration Office or by completing the form sent out via email in early January. The Board will review the nominees and select the recipient(s). The award will be presented at the SCOV Annual Meeting in March.

Community Services - Katy Mosier Office Hours 9-11 AM, Monday-Friday, Welcome Center kmosier@suncityorovalley.com 917-8058 Maintaining Trees and Bushes In November 2016, the Board of Directors approved the newest SCOV Development Standards. One of the additions to this governing document has to do with landscaping and can be found in Article 2, Section 2.17, c, viii: All vegetation on any lot shall be maintained so as not to extend beyond the neighboring property lines.

Our trees and shrubs are getting bigger as our community ages and they tend to drop more and more debris. As these plantings grow outside your property line, this debris ends up in someone else’s yard adding extra work or cost for them for upkeep. Take some time this month and walk your property to see if your plants are imposing upon your neighbor’s property. Look over those fences to see if your plants are growing through the wrought iron over into someone else’s yard. If your plants need pruning back to your property line, please talk to your neighbor(s) for permission to enter their property for access, if necessary.

Of special importance in being a good neighbor is removing the ground debris that your trees and shrubs are dropping onto your neighbor’s yard. Please take additional steps to prune your trees so they do not overhang the sidewalks and roadway. Thank you for all your cooperation in making this community top notch.

Start off on the right foot with these helpful tips: Take it slow and set small goals, after all, you’re in this for a lifetime.

Talk to your doctor before getting started, especially if it’s been 8-12 months or longer since you’ve last exercised, you’ve had a large weight gain or you’ve had a noticeable change in health.

The speaker is R. Wayne Gustin, Pharmacist and First Line Therapy Lifestyle Educator. He will share information from a recent symposium on Alzheimer’s that featured presentations by 30 neurological experts.

The good news is Alzheimer’s Disease is not a death sentence; it is now highly reversible when treated in time. If you, or anyone you know, is affected by Alzheimer’s, or you want to know about prevention strategies, this program is for you.

The AHC continues the Balance Class that uses simple Tai Chi principles and movements. It will be held on Mondays 10:30-11:30 AM and Wednesdays 1-2 PM, AFC Studios 1 & 2 from January 9-March 1. The minimum number of participants is 30 per class and the maximum is 60 per class.

Pat Jacobs is Pima County’s representative on the CAP Board of Directors. He will share with SCOV residents just what CAP is and does, a very brief history, current and projected status of our water supply, water delivery priorities and obligations, and who controls all this. He will explain recommendations from a Colorado River Basin supply and demand study and their status of implementation, what controls are in place to make sure land development water needs are accurately projected and fit with water supply projections, etc. Bring your questions to this informative session.

For those of you who haven’t stopped by the Pro Shop, please do so. We have a wide variety of merchandise and if we do not have your size or color, we will be more than happy to special order merchandise for you. We have a variety of items to choose from (towels, golf shoes, clothing and much more). Also, just a reminder that annual golf pass holders will receive 30% off in the golf shop and residents will receive 15% off. This excludes balls, clubs and sale items.

Please note this time change: On Wednesday, the morning shotguns will start at 8:30 AM (unless there is a frost delay). The afternoon shotguns are now scheduled to go out at 1 PM (not 1:30) as in previous years. This is being done, so that we can possibly get the afternoon shotgun in before dark.

Remember that the frost delay hotline is 825-0322.

Walkers and riders, please remember to remain on the paths at all times. Should frost be present, you may damage or kill the underlying grass if you walk on it. Thank you.

As everyone knows, we are now open to the public, which makes us a semi-private golf course. Be aware that as new people play our course they may be a little slow as it may be their first time here. Our rangers are aware of this and will help move them along. We advise everyone of our rules, and hand out playing tips to them in the Pro Shop, so be patient and courteous to these guests. We try and fill in empty times with these guests as a way to increase our revenue.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 917-8063 There are many reasons that our golf course stands out from other golf courses. One of the obvious reasons is the incredible views, but some other things are the unique holes, the design that allows all skill levels to enjoy playing, and the turf conditions. Most golf courses have nice grass, good fairways, tees and greens, but what makes one golf course better than another is in the small details.

Most golfers don’t notice things like edged cart paths, sprinkler heads, yardage markers or freshly painted ball washers with clean towels, trimmed trees or clean cups in the greens until they go to another golf course. One detail that we are the most proud of is the edges of our turf areas.

The tees are treated with a pre-emergent prior to overseeding to achieve a nice crisp edge. The traps are edged many times a year to provide a nice, clean appearance. Also, a pre-emergent is applied around the fairways to achieve a nice edge between the overseed and the dormant Bermuda grass rough.

The last couple of years, there has been a lot of rain during the overseeding process which has led to the pre-emergent chemical running into the overseeded area leaving poor edges. This year the chemical was applied after overseeding to avoid these runs, but this has led to ryegrass growing in the roughs. This will be fixed with a post-emergent chemical to clean up the roughs so we can achieve our crisp edges again.

Check in with the Pro Shop by 9:30 AM, have your practice done and be in your cart by 10 AM, ready to go to your designated hole.

Your promptness will be greatly appreciated. We must keep pace (that is, keeping up with the group in front of you). Otherwise you may incur a warning and you will be asked to advance to the next hole. We have limited time to get through hole #1 before tee times start. Give your utmost cooperation to the marshal staff.

This year’s Cure for Cancer Tournament will be hosted by the Women’s 18-Hole Club Tuesday, February 21. Both an 18-hole and 9-hole event will be offered with a shotgun start at 8:30 AM. This year we are inviting all golfers to participate. A light lunch and awards ceremony will follow the event. Check the Pro Shop for details.

... And a partridge in a pear tree On December 1, we kicked off the holidays with a catered luncheon and 12 Days of Christmas skit. Jo Parker presented Wendy Bertacchini with the Hole-In-One plaque and $430 award. She made her hole-in-one on February 11, 2016 (her birthday) on Hole #17. In addition, Irene Camp read an original holiday poem with some golf euphemisms thrown in.

Club President, Janet Kimble, presented Tim Lochner, our pro, with a Christmas gift certificate. We also collected 200 pounds of food for the Catalina Food Bank and numerous toys for Toys for Tots.

The first of these changes was conceived in December with our first-ever dinner menu. This menu was created to have something for everyone from our Vegan Sopes to Beef Bourguignon. Whether it was being selected to cook for presidents, governors, or celebrities, it`s never changed his attitude and drive for excellence in the kitchen. Wayne Gustin, pharmacist and First Line Therapy Lifestyle Educator, who will share information from a recent symposium on Alzheimer’s featuring 30 neurological experts. Sunday, January 22, 3 PM Mariachi Aztlan Concert Mariachi Aztlan from Pueblo High School has gained a reputation for excellence in its chosen musical field. The topic will be the Retablo of Ciudad Rodrigo. Fernando Gallego: Chaos. This altarpiece, created in medieval Spain, consists of 26 panels and dates from the 15th century. Its historic and cultural significance ranks it among the University of Arizona Museum of Art’s greatest treasures.

Yes, indeed, our group has been together for over two decades and we’re aging well.

We’re still perfecting our techniques and our product has never been better.

Just today, we critiqued some The Fine Arts Studio at Work. beautiful pieces.

We may not be able to get around as well as we did two decades ago, but our artwork keeps improving, thanks to our teacher-members and truly fine artists. We hang a few selected works on the wall just outside our studio and change these monthly.

The Art League, of which we are a member, has planned the monthly shows and themes for 2017 which promise to be both challenging and exciting. The Photo Club will be hanging pieces in the Activity Center this month, and our Fine Arts Studio will adorn the walls in February.

David took the picture on the left of the actual cannon and limber during his visit to Gettysburg last summer. The cannon was developed in France for Emperor Napoleon in 1850. The bronze smoothbore 12-pounder became the most popular gun in the American Civil War. During the war nearly 40% of all field artillery pieces of each army were these cannons. The model is 1:16 scale.

All SCOV residents are welcome at our monthly meetings and to the use of the Modelers Room. On any day, if the lights are on and someone is in the room, stop in. At our meetings you will see what we are about, and you may enjoy a cup of coffee and a sweet roll. From time to time, we schedule field trips of interest to modelers.

Our studio is in full swing now and some grand pieces are under construction. We’re happy to have our president back with us. Laurie is pictured here working on her magnificent raptor. After the sculpting is complete, we harden the clay by baking it in our oven for a threehour period. It is then finished in one of several techniques using patina or paint applications. Aleda’s human head class has added a few Our president Laurie members, and we encourage old Lichaa and her sculpture. class members to return and new residents to join us. Seniors for Kids (SFK) is a 501(c)3 non-profit supporting children at Three Points Clinic, Aviva Children’s Services, Northwest Birthing Center, Family First Services and TriCommunity Food Bank. December 1 was our biggest ever toy distribution event. So many wonderful toys, blankets, layettes, and other items had been made during the year by our SFK elves. Special helpers chose and then delivered the toys to the various charities before Christmas. Additionally, we supported 17 families in the Mammoth area with food gift cards and purchased gifts for their children.

Everyone can contribute to our club by signing up with Fry’s and Amazon Smile, where monetary donations from these companies will be made to SFK when you designate Seniors For Kids as your charity. Our next big fundraiser will be the spring SCOV Courtyard Sale, so start saving your surplus items for the sale.Sewing

These gifts were donated to Tri-Community Food Bank Children’s Christmas party. We surely brought smiles to many kids.

Thimblelenas annual dues are $5, January 1 to December 31. Our group always welcomes new members. When you join Thimblelenas, you can be active in as many of the seven groups as you wish: Seniors for Kids, Casa Amigas, Sun City Vistoso Quilters, Machine Embroidery, Tapestry Rug Hooking, Cheer Bears and Pet Beds.

All Thimblelena members interested in machine embroidery are welcome at our monthly meetings. It’s always fun sharing ideas and seeing what our members are doing. Karin Frohlich showed us the ski vest she made using all the machines in the Sewing Room. She used not only the embroidery machine, but also the Sweet Sixteen Handi Quilter, the BabyLock serger, and the Pfaff sewing machine.

At our January 19 meeting, Kathy Kellner will show us exciting ways to incorporate Mylar into our embroidery projects.

We’ll have Mylar available for you to purchase at the meeting.

The next step for our mystery quilt will be given out at the January 10 meeting. Carol will give a demo on a meltand-blend technique using crayons, producing beautiful fusible applique pieces. On January 14, Barbara Tellman, Vice Chair Pima County Election Integrity Commission and Co-Chair of the Pima County Democrat Party Election Integrity Committee, will explain the entire process. From counting the votes aloud in the saloon (no secret ballots) to today’s high tech methods, we have been getting better and better at making sure our vote counting systems are fair, accurate and that everyone who is eligible gets to vote. Today almost any citizen over the age of 17 is entitled to vote, but it took a long time to get there. Meetings are open to all residents, regardless of political affiliation.

During the short meeting we voted on the 4 themes for this year. In December, we enjoyed “Little Bites” with our hosts.

January features an Alaskan theme. In February, we will be enjoying a Basque dinner and in March, Hawaiian food.

Each dinner has different participants determined by our scheduling secretary. Two to four weeks before your dinner, your group will gather with the host(s) to determine a menu within the theme. The host will provide the main course. The total cost of the evening is divided among the members.

Recipes are shared so you may enjoy them again.

Other events for the club will be a luncheon in February and the Farewell Dinner will be a catered dinner in April.

Local journalist and author Margaret Regan will be speaking at our January meeting. Margaret began writing about the border in 2000 and has had two books published. Her most recent book is Detained and Deported: Stories of Immigrant Families Under Fire, a collection of true stories and events centered here in Tucson. Margaret will speak about this book at our meeting. Detained and Deported has valuable information about migrant detainee facilities in Eloy and Florence, stories of people who are caught up in our complex immigration laws, the Border Patrol, Operation Streamline and accounts of local and national groups involved in advocating for migrants.
