Have you made a New Year’s Resolution?

Statistically, 45% of Americans usually do make a resolution, 17% infrequently do and 38% have never bothered to make even one.

Three of the top 10 resolutions include staying fit and healthy, maintaining strong social ties and learning something new or just doing new things to enjoy life even more. Some resolutions may be difficult to maintain, but in SCOV we can continue working on them all year long.

The really good news is that there is no better place to be than SCOV to effectively accomplish these resolutions.

To support our fitness, the AFC with state of the art equipment, is open and welcoming 16 hours a day. Sign up for gym equipment orientation, held every Thursday at 1 PM. Additionally, there are tennis, pickleball, racquetball courts, two pools, exercise classes and a golf course to play on with paths you can walk on in the early morning and the evening. Consider becoming involved in the Active Health Committee too.

Its objective is also to keep us fit, healthy and active.

An easy accomplishment here in SCOV is to spend more time with your current friends and to meet many new folks.

Joining any club, attending unique events in the community or attending special evenings at The Views Restaurant will never fail to reward you with new experiences and, most likely, brand new friendships. Our new website will enable you to find information about all of the clubs and all special events.

Getting involved on committees in SCOV is certainly an option for everyone to do something new or even to learn something new. The website calendar lists the dates, times and location, for committee meetings. All meetings, plus Board meetings are open to residents and of course, our residents are always needed on every committee including the Board.

Make a resolution. Stay involved. Be grateful for our wonderful community, and let’s all stay in the top 45% of Americans making resolutions. You still have time. Happy New Year.

First, I want to wish everyone a happy, healthy and prosperous 2016. With that stated, it’s hard to believe that we just passed the midway point of this year’s fiscal cycle, and here we are beginning our first serious thoughts about the 2015-2016 Budget.

There’s a long way to go before a budget is formulated and considerable evaluation and analysis still to complete, but here’s some initial considerations before us that may have budget impacts.

Over the past several months a maintenance plan has been developed for Chalk Creek Wash. This plan will call for preventative maintenance work in the wash. If costs associated with this preventative maintenance are prepared in time for the upcoming budget, some factor for this work may be included in the budget, which should reduce future repair work costs.

Walls that are the maintenance responsibility of the Association are another factor that may be considered in the next fiscal year. The Properties Committee along with management are evaluating ways to determine which walls are the responsibility of SCOV and what the projected costs may be for these walls. If this information is available, funding allocation for future costs may be added to the Asset Reserve Fund.

As usual, considerable thought will be given to the revenue/expense challenges that The Views Golf Club and Restaurant have on the budget. As we get closer to the budget process conclusion, we’ll know better how these operations will impact the 2015-2016 Budget.

A proposal that the membership will vote on in March may have a dues reducing impact. This proposal from the Board is to increase the Capital Contribution fee. Part of the fee will continue to be dedicated to new capital improvement projects and part to the Asset Reserve Fund. Money that is allocated to the Asset Reserve Fund is planned to offset some money that would come from dues, thereby putting downward pressure on dues.

There are dozens and dozens of other factors that will be considered during the four-month budget process, yet I thought I’d pass a few high level issues by you during this very early stage of the budget process.

Heroes Among Us Nominations Sought The Board of Directors is requesting residents to submit candidates for the Heroes Among Us award. This award is designed to honor residents who make remarkable contributions to our community. Nominations should be submitted by January 15 by filling out a hard copy of the form available in the Administration Office, or by completing the form sent out via email in early January. The Board will review the nominees and select the recipient(s). The award will be presented at the SCOV Annual Meeting in March.

profit that supports homeless youth in the community. Over the past two years, efforts have raised over $55,000 for the group, which is now a partnered organization. This year’s fundraising event is scheduled for January 31.

Most dances include live bands, which are usually local, but have also come down from Phoenix. Nate Norris, club co-secretary, boasts, “Every band is delighted to be here. They want to be our house band. They usually don’t have the stage and sound system we do. Our facilities are fabulous.”

Most dances also have skits that involve a spoof of a song based on the theme of the dance. For example, last July’s Beach Ball skit was based on Connie Francis’ “Where the Boys Are” and switched images on the big screen from 1960s Ft. Lauderdale beach to our own AFC pool. The Hollies’ “Long, Cool Woman in a Black Dress” provided the spoof for September’s Rock, Rhythm and Blues dance. Dave Martin videotapes the skits, which you can view on YouTube.

Kate Cusumano, who’s produced the skits in collaboration with other members for the past eight months, credits Walt Nalewicki, who organized skits since their inception.

The website highlight this month is the Tipster.

The Tipster is found under the News & Info section. From this section you can find the current issue of the Tipster and a year’s worth of previous issues.

Articles for future issues may be submitted from this location as well as photographs. The Article Standards is a document created by the Tipster Editorial Committee. It is to be used by article submitters to write articles so as to create cohesive reading throughout the document.

By clicking on the current issue of the Tipster you open a full screen version of the Tipster which you can virtually flip through. In this version the email addresses and website links are live. If you’re on a tablet or smart phone you may want to download the Issuu app from the App Store. Issuu (correct spelling) is the server where the Tipster resides and it is best viewed on mobile devices from this app.

From your PC there are several options when viewing the Tipster. On the bottom left there is a bar with a plus and minus. By clicking plus, the text size increases and clicking minus makes the text smaller.

In the bottom right corner are five small icons. The first icon is a folder with an arrow . This is a share button.

You can share items from the Tipster to social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Google+ and LinkedIn. You can email a link of the Tipster to someone.

There is a download feature resulting in a .pdf of the Tipster and within the .pdf there are many features to explore. The Get Link option copies the link to your clip board allowing you to paste it in an email or document.

The next icon is a magnifying glass which provides a search feature.

The third icon looks like a box with hash marks on either side . This is a gallery feature that when pressed brings up all the pages in the Tipster like a photo gallery allowing you to scroll through the pages.

The fourth icon toggles your view between a single page at a time or two pages at once.

The final icon is two arrows that by selecting either point out or in. When selecting the arrows pointing out, the Tipster will take up the whole screen, and when selecting the arrows pointing inward, it creates a smaller view.

Just a few statistics (I can’t help myself). The November issue had 2,897 impressions; that’s how many times it showed up on a webpage. It was read 898 times. The average time the document was up on a web browser was six minutes and 36 seconds. The total time all readers spent on the November issue was a little over four days. Six people shared something from the Tipster (one would be us placing it on our Facebook page).

There were 29 clicks on links within the document. I found this next stat interesting. November 20 was the day with the highest readership of 30. We’ve been using this digital version of the Tipster since October of 2010, posting 63 beautiful issues of the Tipster which can all be viewed here: http://issuu.com/ home/publications. And the best part is that you may enjoy this informational newsletter whether you’re here in Oro Valley or somewhere else in the world.

Here it is another year in paradise for us in SCOV. Great weather allows us many outdoor activities and wonderful indoor entertainment.

There is always something to do in SCOV, The Town of Oro Valley or Tucson. Be sure to take advantage of all the fun that is offered in SCOV and southern Arizona.

I would like to encourage you all to take our AED class that is offered once a month, by Lonnie Davis. Our AED machines have saved several lives in SCOV. If a loved one or friend of yours was having a heart attack. I know that you would want to help. The AED machines are very, easy to use and the machine tells you every step to take. The machines are located near bathrooms in all facilities. Have a great, happy, healthy New Year.

The New Year is a time for reflection and starting over.

Over the time you have lived here, many of you have made upgrades to your homes. In most cases these changes have been approved by the Architectural Review Committee in advance of construction. However, for one reason or another there have been times when some have failed to go through the process either because they didn’t know it was necessary or didn’t feel it was necessary. Regardless of the reasons, our governing documents, to which we all agreed when signing at escrow, clearly define what exterior projects need the approval of the ARC in advance of work.

Those upgrades such as roof lift and relays, replacement windows, room additions, patio screens and covers, rolling sun screens, walls, fences, gates, house paint and awnings all need prior approval.

If you have remembered after the fact that you installed a new roof, etc. without the approval, it is important to update your resident file by going through the process. Your resident file will be up-to-date when it is time to sell your home and you will avoid the hassle of trying to bring your property into compliance at that time.

Welcome the New Year with new books. We are showcasing new releases by some of the over 100 authors who will be presenting at the Tucson Festival of Books on Saturday and Sunday, March 12-13. They include: Lynn Cullen, T. Jefferson Parker, Paula McLain, Craig Johnson, Jonathan Kozol, Scott Simon, C.J. Box, JA Jance, Faye Kellerman, Linda Hirshman and so many more.

Friends of the Library The FOL was formed in 2001 with the goal of sponsoring fundraising events to help pay for books, videos, audio books and supplies for the library. Since no Association funds are used for these purposes, our fundraising efforts, and donations from residents, help keep the library one of the top rated amenities in Sun City.

Please consider becoming a Friend of the Library. Forms are available in the library. As of January 1 the yearly dues will be $20 per household and $15 per individual. If you are unsure of your membership status, stop in the library and ask. A membership drive will be held in the Library Lobby Tuesday-Thursday, January 19-21, 9 AM-Noon and 1-4 PM. It’s a new year, and maybe you have resolved to start an exercise program. If so, good for you. Getting regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do, and it’s one of the most common New Year’s resolutions among Americans each year. Just make sure you start off on the right foot with these helpful tips:

• Take it slow, set small goals – after all, you’re in this for a lifetime.

•Talk to your doctor before getting started especially if it’s been 8-12 months or longer since you’ve last exer cised, you’ve had a large weight gain, or you’ve had a noticeable change in health.

•Evaluate your personality. Do you like to exercise alone, in a large group, or with a partner? The answer to this question will help you decide what type of ex ercise will keep you motivated to stick with your new routine.

•Be safe. If exercising outside, make safety a priority. Dress

for the weather, wear reflectors and light colors if out when it’s dark and carry a cell phone with you.

Your Active Health Committee has three topics to share.

First, if one of your New Year’s resolutions is to exercise more, you will want to come to our presentation, Keep Moving. It will be presented by SCOV resident and Personal Trainer, Ray Jerkins, ACE, CPT on January 15, 1 PM, Auditorium. Ray will focus on a well rounded exercise program that includes aerobics, balance, strength training, and flexibility. He will provide tips for staying enthusiastic and committed to an individualized program. There is no cost for attending, but you must obtain a ticket at the Welcome Center beginning January 4.

Second, we are considering offering an exercise class focused on balance and fall prevention. The class would include a group of simple Tai Chi moves that have been proven to decrease fall risks among older adults (like us).

Third, an introduction to walking our golf course will be held on Tuesday, January 5. This is for people who have not walked the course before. The intent of the SCOV Development Standards is to preserve the desert environment, to preserve the Sonoran Desert southwest architectural character of our community and maintain and to enhance community property values.

The Development Standards provide an overall framework and a comprehensive set of guidelines which allow the community to develop and progress in an orderly and cohesive manner. They establish criteria for architectural style and design, landscape concepts, site improvements, colors and materials. They also establish a process for judicious review of proposed new developments and changes within the community. These standards also set forth the means by which the standards and guidelines may be changed and amended to better serve the needs of an evolving community.

Loan Room - Community Assistance

The Loan Room is located at the end of the Cart Barn and is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM. Beginning in January we will no longer have a reservation phone line so all reservations will need to be made at the Loan Room in person. A current SCOV ID card is required at the time of reservation or at pick up of items. Reservations may be made up to two months in advance. Medical items are loaned for two months and most other items are for two weeks. This is a free service to SCOV residents and is funded with your recycled aluminum cans. Recent purchases for the Loan Room are several car seats and pac-n-plays. Car seats are date-compliant.

Donate aluminum cans by depositing empty, rinsed aluminum ones in the box. For safety reasons, do not deposit unrinsed cans which can attract bees.

On December 15 we delivered 540 pounds of cans to the recycling center; we received $216, which brings our yearto-date total to $600 for the Loan Room-CAC. Marketing and Publicity

LED lighting was installed on the pickle ball courts in early December. Initial reports indicate that the lights are brighter with better color rendering than the previous lights. The LED lights are 150 Watts per fixture. The older lights were a mix of 400 and 1,000 Watts per fixture.

The Solar Project was approved by the Board on November 18. The Properties Committee is currently working with Management in the final reviews of the Solar Services Agreement. It is anticipated that the agreements will be signed by the first of the year. The solar company will be completing design, obtaining permits and procuring materials in the first four months of 2016. Installation of the system is tentatively expected to begin by early May and to be completed in October 2016.

The committee is also working on Chalk Creek erosions control and SCOV common-wall programs.

For those of you who haven’t stopped by the new Pro Shop, please do so. We have a wide variety of merchandise and if we do not have your size or color, we will be more than happy to special order merchandise for you. We have a variety of items to choose from (towels, golf shoes, clothing, hats and much more). Also, just a reminder that annual golf pass holders will receive 30% off in the Pro Shop, and residents will receive 15% off. This excludes balls, clubs and sale items.

On Wednesday the morning shotguns will start at 8:30 AM unless there is a frost delay. The afternoon shotguns are now scheduled to go out at 1 PM not 1:30 PM as in previous years.

This is being done, so that we can possibly get the afternoon shotgun in before dark.

Remember golfers that the frost delay hotline 825-0322.

Walkers and riders please remember to remain on the paths at all times. Should frost be present, you may damage or kill the underlying grass if you walk on it. Thank you.

As everyone knows, we are now open to the public which makes us a semi-private golf course. Please be aware that when new people play our course, they may be a little slow as it may be their first time here. Our rangers are aware of this and will help move them along. We advise every one of our rules, and hand out playing tips to them in the Pro Shop. So please be patient and courteous to these guests. We try to fill in empty times with these guests as a way to increase our revenue.

Happy New Year from Golf Course Maintenance. January is the time of year when the activity in the golf course maintenance department really slows down. The cooler temperatures decrease the growth rate of the grass so the amount of mowing required is greatly reduced.

Less fertilizer for maintaining turf health is needed, and less water is required. This allows our department to catch up on other areas of the golf course: drainage projects, tree trimming and irrigation maintenance.

This winter’s drainage projects are going to be spread around the golf course. The first one will be to the right of the driving range tee, behind the new ball kiosk. This area is always wet from the water running off the cart paths. Then the lower fairway on #9 near the 100 yard marker and the approach on #4 are going to get some drainage to improve areas that are chronically wet.

Trees are being trimmed around tee boxes. Trees have encroached in line of play and limited playability from the tee. #1 blue tees, #8 red tees and #16 blue tees have already had trees trimmed to open views. Several more tees will have restored views during the winter.

Over the years of topdressing greens with sand have caused the sprinklers around the greens to sink. Last winter the front nine heads were raised, and this winter the back nine heads will be raised. Sprinklers are also being moved closer to the cart paths to improve efficiency of the irrigation system.

The Golf Advisory Committee met on December 2.

The classification of the hazard (wash) between the first and second segments of the fairways on hole #5 will be changed from a “red stake lateral” to a “waste area.” This has been discussed for several months by the Golf Advisory Committee and the women’s and men’s golf clubs. The change is being made in hopes of improving the enjoyment of the hole and pace of play. While we do not anticipate that this change will impact the AGA course ratings, AGA representatives will be asked to review this change. Please refer to your rule book so that you are aware of how this change impacts play from a waste area. Call Kim Griggs or Rick Sample with questions.

Collage and Mixed Media for the Creative Artist

Beginning Saturday, January 9, Catalina Vista/Art Studio,and continuing for six consecutive Saturday mornings, 10:30 AM-1 PM. This is open to all artists with some previous experience. Several different techniques will be explored. All materials will be provided except for the media that artists will use in finishing or developing their works, such as drawing materials, paint or pastels. Stained & Fused Glass Classes

Our studio has been very active with several beautiful pieces in progress. The depth and the breadth of the subject matter is truly surprising. At right is a photo of Gene Eckebrecht, a long-time member of our club, working on a great blue heron. We first build a skeleton (called an armature) by braising wire together. Then we fill the voids with tightly packed aluminum foil,then mold the clay onto it. We have experienced instructors to teach beginners. You’ll be amazed at the results one can obtain, even with your first piece. Come join us.

The Giant Magellan Telescope in Chile whose mirrors are being made at the U of A Mirror Laboratory in Tucson.

We are pleased to welcome Professor Thomas Fleming again as our speaker at the January 21 meeting. His topic will be Relativity Made Simple. Emphasis is given to the observational evidence for the validity of Einstein’s theories, and how they inform what we know about black holes. Dr. Fleming, Astronomer and Senior Lecturer at the UofA, serves as organizer and host of the Steward Observatory Public Evening Lecture Series.

On Tuesday, December 1, six club members enjoyed our first field trip this season visiting the UofA Mirror Lab. The highlight was seeing the live casting process of the fourth mirror for the GMT (Giant Magellan Telescope) and the polishing of the base of the third GMT mirror. The GMT is being built in Chile to be commissioned in 2021.

We are a casual book club that meets monthly and averages 12 attendees during the summer months, and has increased to over 35 attendees during the fall/winter season.

While it is wonderful to be so popular, we will be addressing how to manage the winter-season attendance to enable enjoyable and effective discussions.

In January we will be discussing The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown, a story of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

In February we will discuss The Sleepwalker’s Guide to Dancing by Mira Jacob. With depth, heart, and agility, debut novelist, Mira Jacob, takes us on a deftly-plotted journey that ranges from 1970s India to suburban 1980s New Mexico to Seattle during the dot-com boom.

The term ceramics is usually associated with the process of pouring liquid clay into molds and then concentrating on using the product as a canvas for surface treatment. But ceramics is also a term used to bring all forms of clay under one umbrella. In the Clay Club, pliable, solid clay is formed by hand or on a wheel as the main focus, and the decoration and glazing are sometimes a painful afterthought. The combined club will retain the Clay Club name in tribute to the medium, but we will work together to integrate our shared interests as equal members in a common joy of playing with dirt. We have much to learn from each other, and we look forward to welcoming our new clay friends. It’s truly just all clay.

The room provides space to build models and to assist in building and operating the new HO train layout. Based on the individual backgrounds and personal experiences of our members, there may be differences of opinion concerning elements of style, word choice and other poetic devices which produce lively discussions. However, each poet receives positive feedback along with suggestions for improvement and gets to determine how or if a poem should be revised.

The Prepare and Share Club welcomed several new participants at the fall kick-off event where we enjoyed a Mediterranean dinner.

We now meet in smaller groups to prepare and share our own meals. Four themes were selected at the kick-off dinner and will be used monthly (December through March) for planning and feasting. European Delight was the theme for December when food enthusiasts gathered in homes to enjoy eating. The other themes chosen were Brunch, Gone Fishing, and Mediterranean Cuisine.

Remember to stop at the Prepare and Share table on Friday, February 5 during the Club Fair.

The fruits of our labors were distributed to four agencies which have established relationships with children in their areas who might have bleak Christmases without our toys. Toys were distributed to Tri-Community Food Bank and Thrift Store which serves Mammoth, San Manuel and Oracle; Aviva, which serves many smaller non-profit agencies in Mid-town; Family First in Oracle, which provides parent education classes, diapers, and other needed items; and Three Points Clinic, which gives toys to their patients. The work continues as members make toys at home, in the Sewing Room, or the Wood Shop.
