From The Board of Directors Our MISSION as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community.

All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

What’s Stopping You

by Richard Babin Day to day operations in Sun City Oro Valley are run by a talented and dedicated staff, but staff work alone is not enough to sustain the community and maintain the high quality of life we have come to expect. Volunteers are essential for the operation of the community. At present about 185 people serve on the Board, a committee, or a special purpose task force. A comparable number volunteer on an as needed basis, e.g., Ambassadors, community directory delivery, Posse, Consumer Referral, and audio/visual operators to name just a few.

Even with these numbers there is agreement that we could do a better job of recruiting volunteers. It turns out that many homeowner associations experience a large degree of apathy when it comes to volunteering. While this is understandable at some level, there are certainly many interested and talented members here in SCOV who could and would participate if circumstances were right. The challenge is to create conditions which make it easy to volunteer.

It is incumbent on the Board to take the lead in cultivating volunteers. It is clear to me that more could be done in this regard. Board and current committee members must encourage anyone who expresses an interest in serving. We must demystify what is required to serve. While having special training, talent, or experience can be a bonus, it isn’t always required. We should encourage those who simply want to serve because they have the time and interest.

We need to recognize that recruiting volunteers is an ongoing activity, not limited to a small portion of the year. In particular, a special effort should be made to invite new residents to participate soon after they arrive. Personal contact with new residents is essential. The mechanism for making this type of contact could certainly be enhanced.

New approaches to volunteer recruitment are needed.

Governing Document Amendments A huge effort to review, organize and amend the Association’s governing documents so that they comply with State law, do not conflict with each other and are more easily understood is underway by the Governing Documents Review committee. This process began approximately a year ago and will likely continue for another year.

The first step the committee took in this process was to determine which document should be reviewed first. Logically, the committee decided that the best course of action would be to begin with the document that is at the top of the hierarchy which is the Articles of Incorporation. This document has been fully vetted with the assistance of the Association’s attorney.

The end result is that the committee is recommending two amendments. If approved by the membership in March 2015, one of these amendments will change the corporate name to Sun City Oro Valley so that the corporate name and the DBA (doing business as) name that the Board established a couple of years ago will be the same. The purpose of the other amendment is to establish a minimum number of Board members (5) that will serve on the Board of Directors.

Both of these proposed amendments will be explained, and additional information will be provided at a membership forum that will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 1 PM. in the Auditorium. This is a very important meeting that you are urged to attend.

At this time, the committee is working on the CC&Rs and Bylaws which will take several months. The committee plans to present the proposed changes to these documents to the membership early in 2016 for a vote in March 2016.

Heroes Among Us Nominations Sought The Board of Directors is requesting residents to submit candidates for the “Heroes Among Us” award. This award is designed to honor residents who make remarkable contributions to our community. Nominations should be submitted by January 16 by filling out a hard copy of the form available in the Administration Office, or by completing the form sent out via email in early January. The Board will review the nominees and select the recipient(s). The award will be presented at the Sun City Oro Valley Annual Meeting in March.

by Barbara Ross Have you ever wondered why Sun City Oro Valley is one of the safest places to live in Arizona? Our Posse is a major reason, and you could be, too, by volunteering just ten hours a year.

The Posse is a volunteer Neighborhood Patrol dedicated to the safety and security of SCOV residents and their property. It is composed of five teams or squads, each squad responsible for one week of nightly patrols every five weeks. The goal is to have two Posse members patrol SCOV every night from 9 PM until midnight throughout the year in each of the Posse’s sedan and truck. Posse chair Bob Hefner reports that there are currently about 430 Posse members, but there have been 700 members in the past. The Posse is looking for additional volunteers, both full-time and seasonal residents, to cover all the shifts.

Committee Members Needed for the Governing Documents Review Committee. We are seeking individuals who have good attention to detail and would be willing to work on rewriting the Bylaws. If interested, please fill out the Committee Volunteer application on the website committee page or obtain one from the Administration Office.

As per the ARC Charter we review our house paint colors every five years and make recommendations for change to keep our community current. This past fall, a Paint Sub-Committee was organized to do just that. The sub-committee will be presenting its recommendations for Board approval in February.

The question being asked is once the color selections have been approved, do houses have to be painted these colors? These will be the colors that homeowners will choose from when their house needs to be painted or when they choose to repaint their house. Homeowners are NOT required to paint their house because new colors have been selected. The only paint color requirements that have an implementation date is wrought iron fencing being painted Weathered Brown by January 1, 2016. If you haven’t voted on your favorites, please do so, time is running out.

We always cover the financial statements and some discussion of the budget process, golf fees and the status of the Chalk Creek Commission. The budget process for fiscal year 2015-2016 will begin in February.

Happy New Year, it is a great time for togetherness with family and friends. The committee hopes some of those plans include dining at The Café.

New things are happening in The Café: we’ve introduced our new lunch menu and a new to-go menu. We’ve also begun sporting event nights, come and watch games on the big screen and enjoy food and drink specials as well.

All are invited to use our comment cards. These are very important for The Café and the committee to get your in-put for suggestions for improvements and get feedback on what you like. You will have a chance to win a free breakfast or lunch in the monthly drawing from all the cards submitted.

Rose works with copper, brass and German silver as her starting point. She makes earrings, bracelets and necklaces incorporating metal, glass, found treasures, rustic beads, gems, stones and disassembled vintage pieces. Metal finishes may be etched or weathered before being riveted, hammered and soldered into statement jewelry that is fun and funky.

Juliet has been creating stained glass for over 13 years.

A small piece can take up to eight hours to complete. First, the glass pieces have to fit a pattern exactly. The pieces are foiled and lead solder is melted along the seams to hold the glass together. More recently, Juliet has been learning the art of fusing glass. She feels that she can be more creative with this medium.

Pima County Administrator Chuck Huckleberry will be the featured speaker at our forum on Friday, January 30, 2 PM, Auditorium. We have asked Mr. Huckleberry to explain how our property taxes are used, the Bicycle Loop, county roads, Interstate 11 and any other issues in the news at that time.

There should be time to take questions from the audience.

Loan Room - Community Assistance

The Loan Room is operated by the Community Assistance Committee and is a free service to SCOV residents. It is funded by recycling of aluminum cans throughout our community and the annual pancake breakfast held in January.

The Loan Room provides rollaways beds, cots for children, tables and chairs, car seats and some children’s toys. We also loan medical equipment such as walkers, wheelchairs, toilet risers, shower seats, etc. We are open 8-9 AM, Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the year. Reservations can be made at the Loan Room, November-April, or by telephone on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8-9 AM only.

Note: You must be able to transport your borrowed items from the Loan Room to your vehicle. If you need additional help, you should make arrangements for that help. The Loan Room personnel/volunteers cannot assist you. You are responsible for transporting the borrowed items.

Aluminum can donations: deposit empty, rinsed aluminum cans in the box outside the Activity Center kitchen. For safety reasons, do not deposit unrinsed cans which can attract bees. We need to make sure all new residents are aware of our recycling program, which provides cash for purchasing new equipment. Please, if you have new neighbors, let them know about this program.

On December 2, a 600-pound load of aluminum cans was delivered to the recycle center. We received $354, making our fiscal YTD total for three trips, 1,800 pounds, and $1,062 has been raised so far.

The Marketing Committee is working with staff and Anchor Wave Website Solutions to refresh the SCOV website for easier navigation and more robust content. Members are working with The Café manager to promote the Heat & Eat program and the catering menus. We have created an ad hoc subcommittee to assist the Board and committees with communications projects as needed.

Members and Marketing staff also met with local realtors to solicit their ideas for increasing home values. The committee will host a Forum on Remodeling Saturday, February 28.

More details will follow in early February.

Because Christmas fell on the fourth Thursday of December, we will hold our next meeting on Thursday, January 8 and then return to our normal schedule on Thursday, January 22.

Our committee members have certainly enjoyed seeing the beautiful holiday decorations throughout the community over the past few weeks. As a friendly reminder though, seasonal decorations should be removed by January 15. We appreciate all residents who continually take pride in the appearance of their property, and we are most pleased with how beautiful our community is looking to usher in the new year. As we begin 2015, we wish each and every one of you a happy, healthy and prosperous year.

At the end of January our long-time secretary, receptionist and go-to-girl, Norma Meyers, will be retiring. Working for Sun City Oro Valley for over 28 years she has served our community through many changes. As she embarks on this next change, into retirement, we celebrate the opportunity for her to enjoy the many amenities in SCOV. In the Administration department, located in the Welcome Center, we offer you many services, one of which is new.

You may now pay for many of the items sold from the front office with your credit card. We hope this new method of payment provides an additional convenience to you.

Want to watch the latest DVD or read a new release?

Come visit the library. It’s one of SCOV’s most used amenities. While you’re at it, please consider following the library’s blog. You’ll find out about the new releases and other insider news. Did you know the library hosted famed Tucson artist Diana Madaras? People reading the blog knew and you can too.

Please consider taking a tour if you are fairly new to SCOV. There is so much that you will learn about this community.

It’s a resident-lead tour; you’re not sold anything other than how great it is to live in SCOV. This is a valuable service for renters as well. If you are a renter or rent your home, please consider taking a tour. The Administration Office is where your renters may pick up their activity cards. Also, there is a renter’s packet available. If you haven’t stopped by the office to pick one up, please do so.

If you want to do some work on the outside of your home, please check the Development Standards and file the appropriate applications with the Community Services Coordinator (CSC). The CSC works closely with the Architectural Review Committee to assist you with your projects. They can answer questions about the governing documents that will help your project move smoothly through the submittal process.

The Tipster continues to be an excellent source of information and communication in SCOV. Not only does it provide information for our residents, but it’s also a fabulous marketing tool for our potential residents. They ooh and ahh over the beautiful covers and all those activities!

The SCOV website is being refreshed. A team of residents and staff are working with a company to create a new website. It will offer more information on the Members Only section of the website and will be easier to navigate. A launch is anticipated in the first quarter of 2015.

Our goal is to provide great service to you. We want to be actively engaged in serving and listening to you, making your day as we assist you, have fun and make your interaction with our staff a positive experience. SCOV is a fantastic community in which to live and work.

Why We Do What We Do

After the first show using the new chairs in the Auditorium I received many compliments about how comfortable the chairs are. You have to remember our Auditorium is not a theater it is a multi-purpose facility. Monitors are always putting chairs up and down for events, dances, exercise classes and presentations.

The old chairs were stained and hard to keep clean and they were scheduled for replacement on asset reserve. I did research

from many communities in Arizona and out of state. The chairs we purchased were highly used in other communities with great satisfaction.

The new patio furniture for the Kiva and Tennis Patios was selected for high use, residents lifting them, moving them and withstanding direct sunlight and heat. The Kiva Patio feels like an oven in the summer due to two brick walls radiating more heat than in other areas. The furniture selected is the same furniture at the AFC pool. The chairs do not have slats but are woven for comfort. Having the same type of furniture allows us to move the furniture to other areas in the community if needed and all the furniture will match.

When making any purchases for the community, sometimes committees help make decisions, such as the AFC committee picking the color of the furniture at the pool. All purchase decisions are not made without proper research and study and must be able to be replaced only when the item comes up on asset reserve and is needed.

Tips for Staying Active for Life

The more you exercise, the more you will reap the benefits, so it’s important to stay motivated when life’s challenges get in the way.

•Keep a log. Writing down your activities in an exercise jour nal not only holds you accountable, but also is a remind er of your accomplishments.

•Stay inspired. Reading health magazines or watching sports shows can help remind you how great it feels to take care of your body.

•Get support. It’s easier to keep going with support.

Consider taking a class or exercising with your spouse or a buddy.

•Exercise safely. Nothing derails an exercise plan like an injury. Use common sense and don’t exercise if you are ill. Wear brightly colored clothing to be visible on the roads. When the weather brings slippery conditions, walk at a mall indoors to prevent falling.

For those of you who haven’t stopped by the Pro Shop, we have a wide variety of merchandise, and if we do not have your size or color, we will be more than happy to special order the merchandise for you. We have a variety of items to choose from: towels, golf shoes and sandals, golf bags, clothing and clubs and much more. Just a reminder that annual golf pass holders will receive 30% off in the Pro Shop and residents will receive 15% off. This excludes balls, clubs and sale items.

Time change: on Wednesday the morning shotguns will start at 8:30 AM unless there is a frost delay. The afternoon shotguns are now scheduled to go out at 1 PM. This is being done so that we can possibly get the afternoon shotgun in before dark.

Should frost be present, you may damage or kill the underlying grass if you walk on it. Thank you.

As everyone knows, we are now open to the public which makes us a semi-private golf course. Please be aware that as new people play our course they may be a little slow as it may be their first time here. Our rangers are aware of this and will help move them along. We advise everyone of our rules, and hand out playing tips to them in the Pro Shop. So, please be patient and courteous to these guests. We try and fill in empty times with these guests as a way to increase our revenue.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf January is usually the month when the cold temperatures have caused the Bermuda grass roughs to reach dormancy and finally turn brown. This brown color really frames the overseeded fairways and greens and emphasizes the dark green color. Also, when the roughs turn brown, they stop hiding many blemishes, like divots that have been filled with mix containing seed, and also stops hiding weeds that grow during the winter months. A whole program has been developed over the years to combat these blemishes and provide a uniform brown to the roughs.

The weed control program begins before overseeding in the middle of September. A pre-emergent chemical is applied to all areas that aren’t going to be overseeded.

This chemical barrier provides the crisp edges to the fairways and greens and prevents the rogue clumps of grass that would grow in the roughs if untreated. This barrier also helps prevent winter annual broadleaves that germinate during the fall and grow during the winter.

This year a new product is going to be tried to prevent weeds from growing in the roughs. It is supposed to have a longer period of control that lasts up to a year instead of the three months of the old product. This new formula also has some control on weeds that are already growing that were unaffected with the old formula. The biggest benefit of the new formula is that it is supposed to attach tightly to the soil to prevent runoff into the rye grass which is in several areas of the golf course.

These areas are either wet or the grass has been damaged from too much golf-cart traffic.

On league day, if you see new golf members attempting to locate their playing partners, ask them if you can assist in anyway. Remember we’ve been in their shoes at one time ourselves.

She starts a half hour early every day so to be ready for residents and suppliers when the doors officially open at 7:30 AM. Norma Meyers, Secretary, Sun City Oro Valley, at your service.

Norma has worked at Sun City since 1986 with Del Webb.

Our Sun City was much smaller then, with only three people working in the office. Tammy Howell was a co-worker at the office and decided a publication was needed to keep everyone informed of what was going on here. The name “Tipster” was chosen, because it would be full of tips for the residents. It was originally a single 11” x 17” sheet of paper, printed in the office and folded in half. Norma and others did the pasteup for printing. The day came when the General Manager told Norma “It is yours,” meaning ad sales for the new publication. It is a job she still performs. Even in those early days, inserts were placed in the Tipster, and those early issues were delivered by neighborhood repersentatives.

Did you know there is a legend amongst the staff that the floor in the Welcome Center tilts to the right when you enter and visitors just gravitate to Norma’s desk? Like the fellow who came in and asked “Where do I want to go?” Or another who came in and said “I lost my swimming suit.”

Norma replied, “Well, how did you get home?”

About a year ago, Norma fell and injured her leg. She was off work for a few months, and she found what a wellknown and beloved part of the community she was when she counted the number of get-well cards she received: 189!

Now in her eighties, she is looking forward to retiring. She envisions her days filled with exercise classes, playing cards and joining “Emerge!”, a center for domestic abuse victims.

Norma will be honored for her years of service on January 20, 2-4 PM, Auditorium. Won’t you plan on attending and celebrating with her? Because, as she often says, “When the mountains turn pink, it’s time for a drink.” Hopefully, the mountains will be pink that afternoon.

Yes, it is true. After 28 years serving our community Norma Meyers is planning on retiring the end of January.

She started with Del Webb in 1986 even before Rancho Vistoso Blvd. existed. Norma has helped literally thousands of residents by answering questions, issuing our community cards and selling tickets to events. She always has a friendly greeting, dry wit and tries to convince people there is the outline of an Indian in a canoe on top of the Catalina Mountains.

Won’t you join us as we honor Norma for her years of service and celebrate her pending retirement?

AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) Classes Classes are held the fourth Wednesday of each month at 1:30 PM, WC1 and are taught by Lonnie Davis. To attend you must register ahead of time by calling him at 917-8073. You could save a life by taking this class. We have new, very easy to operate machines. This month’s class will be January 28.

Basic Photography

The Vistoso Photo Club offers its annual course for novices and those who need a refresher. Learn about cameras, how to take better pictures and more.

Country Western Dancing Classes

Dance Fundamentals Class Designed to teach the basics of four popular dance steps: two-step, swing, waltz and cha-cha. Class meets 6:30-7:30 PM. Continuing Development Class Designed for people who feel comfortable with the basic dance steps but want to refine and extend their dancing skills. Class will focus on the two-step, swing, waltz and chacha with the specific content in each session. Some pattern dances will also be taught. Class meets 7:30-8:30 PM.

Gin Rummy

This year-round workshop is at George and Beverly Riley’s home. All skill levels are welcome. We practice playing and discuss the standardized game rules of SCOV, as well as scoring, etiquette and skill tactics. Couples and singles are invited.

Healing Movement Class Joe Pinella’s Healing Movement Class is held every Wednesday, 1:30-2:30 PM, AFC/Studio 2. If you have chronic pain and stiffness, arthritis pain and recurrent injuries, you need to correct bad movement patterns. First class is free.

IRS Scams

Recently our community has seen a tremendous increase in IRS Scams. Fraudsters are calling people claiming to be the IRS, demanding immediate payment for tax debt and threatening jail time if payment is not received immediately. This is not how the IRS operates. They will first send official mail prior to any phone calls being made.

These calls sound very sophisticated. Do not send money.

The more they threaten, the more likely it’s a scam. If you have questions about your tax debt, contact the IRS directly.

Krabbendam, the speaker for our January 15 meeting, is Project Manager for the LSST (Large Synoptic Survey Telescope), a $650 million joint project between the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy to design, build and commission a new 8.4 meter Speaker Victor Krabbendam with revoludiameter ground-based tionary new telescope. telescope, a 3.2 gigapixel camera and a new world class data management system to process and serve the 15+ terabytes of data generated each and every night for the duration of the 10 year survey. He will present an update and overview of the program. Mr. Krabbendam will answer questions such as why do we need the LSST and why build the telescope in Chile?

While we meet year-round starting in the Mountain View Plaza parking lot (Rancho Vistoso Blvd. at Sun City Blvd.), the coming months are prime time. Cyclists come here from all over the world to experience an unparalleled combination of near perfect weather, amazing desert vistas and excellent infrastructure of bike lanes and dedicated paths.

While all we Vistoso Cyclists have to do is roll down our driveway. New riders are always welcome to join us in our cycling camaraderie.

A monthly schedule of 20-60 mile rides is available on our website. Our well-tested loop routes support a wide variety of abilities and usually include a mid-ride coffee stop. We also offer a mountain bike option on Wednesdays, which most often heads out into the Tortolita rangelands.

Tuesday morning our WOW (Women on Wheels) group take somewhat shorter rides nearer to SCOV. In addition, we hold a number of social events each season. Call Tom or Bonnie Bethea for more information.

All residents are invited to join us as we continue our discussion of Immigrant Voices: 21st Century Stories, an anthology of 18 contemporary short stories written by recent immigrants to the United States (ISBN 978-1-939014-65-9). We are now reading the Being Here section of the book.

On January 7, Ann Fall will lead a discussion of the story Wal-Mart Has Plantains by Sefi Atta. The author was born in 1964 and raised in Lagos, Nigeria and moved to the UK when she was 14 years old. Sixteen years later she moved to the United States, received an MFA degree from Antioch University in Los Angeles, and now lives in Mississippi. She is a successful novelist and playwright and has received international prizes for her published work.

At our January meeting we will discuss Wild, by Cheryl Strayed. At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything including her mother and her husband. With no experience or training, driven only by blind will, she would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State, and she would do it alone. Told with suspense and style, Wild powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened and ultimately healed her.

At our February meeting we will discuss Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline. Penobscot Indian Molly Ayer, is close to aging out of the foster care system. A community service position helping an elderly woman clean out her home is the only thing keeping Molly out of juvie and worse. As she helps Vivian sort through her possessions and memories, Molly learns that she and Vivian aren’t as different as they seem to be. A young Irish immigrant orphaned in New York City, Vivian was put on a train to the Midwest with hundreds of other children whose destinies would be determined by luck and chance.

Pilates It’s a new year and time to commit to a new exercise routine. Why not try out Pilates? Michigan Club Annual Get Together Happy New Year to all you folks from the Wolverine State.

It’s not too early to be thinking about our annual party and putting it on your calender, Sunday, March 8, Noon, Auditorium.

This year we’ll have an All American theme and our entertainment will be really special. Vocalist Wendy Sweet will share a wide variety of song styles, standard classics, country, pop and old rock and roll. Wendy’s first solo was at age three, and she’s been performing professionally for over 30 years. She has spent the majority of her career primarily as a morning show radio personality in Sedona and here in Tucson on MIX-FM, KHIT and KCMT. You’re going to love her.

Culinary Design will be back again this year. And of course, we’ll have some liquid refreshment too. Great food and entertainment, but the best part is just being together with some good Michigan friends. We’ll give you the ticket sale dates in next month’s Tipster.

Most of us think of Tai Chi as a way to prevent falls, improve breathing, and reduce stress, but it is so much more.

Harvard Medical School Health publication stated that Tai Chi is medication in motion and research by Tufts University School of Medicine credits Tai Chi with decreased pain, improved sleep and mood, and better quality of life.
