From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community.

by Ted Hood Be a squeaky wheel and help the ACRC design the renovation of the Activity Center to be the best amenity that it can be.

We have all heard the phrase “the squeaky wheel gets the grease.” This is especially true when it comes to seeking resident input on Board of Directors' policy and planning decisions. A relatively small group of residents can have a disproportionate say on the decision-making process.

The Activity Center renovation project will be the most complex and likely the most expensive project to date for SCOV. Complex because the Activity Center is a multi-purpose building serving a diverse group of residents, expensive because of its size at over 15,600 square feet. We are currently in the very early stages of this project and realistic cost estimates are not available. However, this will be a major expenditure, and we are committed to doing it right and making sure all funds are well-spent. It is almost a certainty that the total cost will be sufficiently large that, in accordance with our bylaws, a community vote of approval will be necessary.

The Charter for the ACRC emphasizes the requirement for maximizing resident input as well as professional planning. Over the next six to nine months the ACRC will be seeking resident input in various forms including attendance of residents at the ACRC meetings, public forums, use of the Tipster and SCOV website. In addition, ACRC will be relying on input from existing Board committees such as Property, Finance-Budget, Long Range Planning and Marketing.

The quality (and quantity) of resident input will, to a large extent, contribute to the success of this project.

General Manager - Mark Wade mwade@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8080 How the Budget is Prepared We are now starting to work on the budget. A lot of work goes into preparing the budget. It’s a complex activity that has to start early so the budget can be finalized and approved prior to the beginning of the new fiscal year. Here’s how we do it: • The Board appoints a Finance-Budget Committee to help with some or all of the following tasks.

• The General Manager (GM) and Controller work together to gather all financial information we’ll need to project expenses for the coming year. This could be a reserve analysis, bids for contracts, projections for utility or service increases, comparisons of past years’ budget trends and many other details.

• The GM and Controller also examine all sources of income: annual dues, interest on investments, proceeds from restaurant and golf club operations and other types of miscellaneous income.

• The GM and Controller meet with all Department Managers to review their needs and their proposed expenses for the coming year.

• The GM and Controller create a working draft by adjusting the expenses and income until they balance. This may be accomplished by foregoing certain expenses to avoid raising the annual dues. Or it may be necessary to raise annual dues to cover increased expenses such as utilities or legislated minimum wage increases that Management cannot control.

• When the GM and Controller have developed the best possible draft budget, they present it to the FinanceBudget Committee for review and comment. One of the reasons we start the process early is to allow them time to study the budget, ask questions and offer comments and recommendations.

• Based on Finance-Budget Committee members' comments, the GM and Controller revise the draft budget as needed.

• After a series of meetings, the Finance-Budget Committee, with the endorsement of the GM and Controller, recommend approval of the budget to the Board of Directors. The Board can either approve the budget as presented, or they can modify it before they approve it.

Distinguished Service Award Recipients: Tempe Johnson and Janice Strassburg

mong the many outstanding feaA tures of SCOV, surely one of the most obvious is the excellent appear-

ance and maintenance of homes and landscaping. This is enjoyed by residents, frequently noted by visitors and a critical factor in maintaining the ambience of our community as well as, in more practical terms, property values in SCOV. There are two committees which play Tempe Johnson the primary role in ensuring that properties within SCOV are maintained in accordance with standards established in our governing documents. One is the Neighborhood Pride Committee (NPC). One of our 2018 Distinguished Service Award recipients, Tempe Johnson, is virtually synonymous with the NPC, having served as chair of this committee since its establishment in 2005. She and her committee members spend many hours viewing the 2,488 homes in SCOV each month and work with individual owners to ensure compliance with SCOV governing documents. Tempe and her husband, Dave, have been full-time residents since 1995, and both have been actively involved in many community activities. In addition to her service on the NPC, Tempe has been a member of the Posse Committee since 1996, co-chaired the Aluminum Can Recycling Committee for several years and has cochaired the Tipster collation effort for the past nine years.

She has also found time (somehow) to help teach classes for the Computer Club, play some bridge (co-chair of the Marathon Bridge Club for the last four years) and partici-

The project’s Board-approved budget was $385,000. This budget included pre-project architectural concepts, construction drawings, designer drawings and the general contractor as well as items SCOV would be purchasing. At the end of February the project came in under budget at $376,536. The renovation and expansion included complete new flooring, a new monitor station and a new kitchen. The restrooms were gutted and completely remodeled. The furnishings throughout the building were replaced, including poker tables and stacking chairs, and the interior décor was updated. The most significant portions of the project are the two rinse-off showers and two enclosed showers added to the exterior as well as a new exterior restroom. The pool chairs and lounges were replaced. A new entry into the pool gate was created with secured access. The Certificate of Occupancy was issued on Tuesday, March 6, indicating a completion of the project from the Town’s perspective. The only remaining item is to add a water fountain to the pool area since there are funds available. There will be tweaks here and there as the building is used, but the building is in full utilization and the project is complete. As with any project there have been lessons learned which will help in the projects to come. Thank you for your patience and support of this remodel and expansion of the Desert Oasis.

The other committee playing a major role in maintaining the appearance of our community is the Architectural Review Committee (ARC). ARC is charged with reviewing all proposed additions to, or modifications of, existing structures to ensure compliance with our governing documents. You might be surprised, Janice Strassburg as I was, to learn that ARC reviewed 449 proposals during this past year. That’s a lot of work.

Chairing ARC for the past few years is our second 2018 Distinguished Service Award recipient, Janice Strassburg.

Janice and her late husband, Lauren, moved to SCOV in 2001. Both Janice and Lauren have contributed in many ways to our community. In addition to her service on ARC, Janice also serves on the NPC, has served on the Nominating, Election, Posse and Consumer Referral Desk Committees and is actively involved with the Seniors for Kids charity. She is also an avid quilter. Both Tempe and Janice are walking encyclopedias of the SCOV governing documents related to maintenance standards in our community, and all of us owe them a great big "thank you" for their help in keeping SCOV the beautiful community that it is. And they have something else in common. When asked if there was “one thing that you particularly love about SCOV,” they both gave the same answer: the people who live here.

June will take us “out to the ballgame,” with details in the May Tipster. As some of our winter residents start to leave, I wish them safe travels.

You can do them as often as you like, as long as you have something sturdy nearby to hold onto if you become unsteady.

• Walk heel-to-toe. Position your heel just in front of the toes of the opposite foot each time you take a step. Your heel and toes should touch or almost touch.

• Practice standing up and sitting down without using your hands.

• Stand on one foot. You can do this while waiting in line at the grocery store or at the bus stop. Remember to alternate feet.

At our March meeting, the committee approved a recommendation to Administration for reconfiguring a layout of the exercise area. This recommendation’s purpose is to provide two designated stretching areas and to provide more space for individuals to stretch or do floor exercises.

On our treadmill and bicycle machines for the month of February, we recorded 7,000 individual workouts that totaled 14,700 miles. The treadmill and bicycle machines continue to be high-use exercise equipment in the exercise facility.

The Aquatic Fitness Center Committee will have our last meeting in April. We will take a hiatus for the summer and resume our meetings this fall. Our committee wishes everyone a wonderful summer.

As of the mid-March meeting, Architectural Review Committee has processed over 100 submittals in the current calendar year. Of late, the most requested items are fences.

The javelina are playing havoc with so many plants in resident yards, I expect many homeowners wish that Del Webb had installed fences as part of the initial buildout.

I have to commend our residents and how they work with Katy Mosier to fill out their applications. The more information we have, the easier it is to understand what the homeowner wishes to accomplish. It was delightful to be a docent on the home tour to see the interior of some of the projects we approved. Keep up the good work, all you beautiful people of SCOV. It is a pleasure to work with you.

What can be done to get checks and pay the bill faster?

Try this: have your credit card or cash ready for your server when they bring the bill, so they don’t have to make an extra trip to pick up your payment. If you pay with cash, offer to let them “keep the change.” For example, if your bill is $16.50 and you provide $20 cash with no change needed, that is a $3.50 tip or 21 percent.

Spring is Here Spring did get here, and it’s time to make sure those empty pots in front yards are filled with living plants, cactus, or flowers. With the rain we had earlier this year, weeds are popping up everywhere. Watch for them while they are small and easy to remove. Wildflowers are allowed in our community until after they finish blooming, at which time they need to be removed. Please trim any trees or shrubs which overhang the sidewalk or street, as they, too, grew during our winter rains. Remember, no artifacts of any kind are allowed on the ground in front yards, no matter how cute they may be.

Winter residents should have someone maintain their yards during the summer months, so the home looks cared for while you are away. Be sure to notify Administration of your summer address and phone number in case they need to reach you. Please continue to take pride in your property even when you are not on site, so that it will look just as nice upon your return as when you left.

Director of Golf - Rick Price rprice@theviewsgolfclub.com 520-917-8086 Pace of Play Every day we are challenged with providing an outstanding golf experience. How long it takes to play golf is a critical component of that experience and is always a hot topic of conversation. There is no magic formula for solving this potential dilemma of slow play.

What is considered slow play? And secondly, how can we consistently improve the pace? The first thing you may think of is the overall time it takes to play, or maybe it’s how long you're waiting between shots. It’s possible that waiting on every shot is more of a problem enjoying your round than the overall time to play. As an example, you have two groups that play in three hours and 50 minutes, but the group behind them wait on almost every shot. Although both play in the same amount of time and under the recommended four-hour pace, the second group is frustrated and complains about the pace of play saying what a horrible experience they had.

Then you have groups that can play slowly. However, they are spread out on the course, thus not causing any shot delays.

At other times the groups may be playing quickly but are so close together any change of pace results in shot delays.

It all starts with the behavior of the golfers and educating them to have a better pace-of-play attitude. The real challenge is that all golfers have different reasons for playing and different capabilities and expectations for playing a round of golf. So, let's always keep in mind that we are all here for the enjoyment of the game. If all golfers do their part in playing in an acceptable amount of time, the game will be more enjoyable for all.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063 April is the time of year the golf course begins the transition from the overseeded winter Ryegrass to the underlying Bermuda grass.

The goal is to minimize the impact of the Ryegrass on the Bermuda grass and improve golf course conditions in May and early summer.

The process of transitioning from the winter Ryegrass to summer Bermuda grass involves many steps that start with overseeding in September and last until the Bermuda grass is healed in July. Seed rates have been greatly reduced over the years to provide less competition between grasses.

Some fairways are not overseeded to allow extra time to recover. Seed bed prep is reduced to prevent injury to Bermuda grass before seeding.

Irrigation is monitored very closely to prevent damage to the Bermuda grass in late spring as the temperatures rise.

If the Ryegrass is watered too heavily, the underlying Bermuda grass gets weaker and suffers. If the Ryegrass is not watered enough the salts build up and weaken the Bermuda grass.

A mix of chemicals is used starting in March to weaken the Ryegrass. This reduces competition and allows the Bermuda grass to come out of dormancy easier. A different chemical is used in May to completely remove the Ryegrass and

The Club Championship contested during the first two weeks of March brought out a field of 56 contestants. This is a major tournament and received its due; starting times, players names announced prior to teeing off and the professional staff handing out score cards in shirt and tie.

There were 14 players in the Championship flight who had hopes of taking the first place spot, although there may have been some eyeing a net position while the lower handicappers battled it out for the trophy. In the end, capturing the title of Club Champion was Preston Sheriff. Congratulations.

This month we look forward to a Two-Man Stableford on April 4 followed by the Member/Guest running April 5, 6 and 7. At a recent meeting, club member Warren Hachmeister was the featured speaker. He described his 33 years working with the Chicago Northwestern, Union Pacific Railroad and Metra, the Chicago commuter system. Warren comes from a family of railroaders. Starting as a brakeman working 12-hour shifts and with 24/7 availability, he worked his way up to be first a freight, and then, a passenger conductor. He described how he went through brakeman's school, conductor school,

"charm school," and then passenger conductor training. We learned about the jobs a conductor performs, the various types of paperwork involved, and what life was like working in a caboose.

All SCOV residents are welcome at our monthly meetings and to the use of the Modelers Room. On any day, if the lights are on and someone is in the Modelers Room, stop in. At our meetings, you will see what we are about and you may enjoy a cup of coffee and a sweet roll. From time to time we schedule field trips of interest to modelers.

Laura Hackenbrock has been an active member of our club for 13 years.

She has held almost every position including president, vice president, treasurer, competition chair, lab director, equipment chair and webmaster. She is currently a board member at large, keeper of club data, and is the Art League liaison.

Last month she held a session on Photoshop Elements for club members. Her favorite type of photo shooting is macro, but she tries to stay as Laura Hackenbrock and partner Bill Hickey, with diverse as possible. This Laura’s winning print “Tetakawi.” is evidenced by the numerous exquisite photos that Laura enters into our contests.

She acknowledges that she couldn’t do it all without partner Bill's help. Laura is a dedicated member of the club and one of the reasons it runs so smoothly.

If you have ever donated fabric to Casa Amigas do you wonder what happens to that fabric? Very little of it goes to waste.

First, it's sorted according to fabric type and size. Any fabric that is 100% cotton and large enough for a quilt backing will be given to the quilters. Flannel, fleece, cotton, and synthetic fabrics are sorted and a decision made if useable for children's or babies' clothing.

Once we cut the fabric out for the clothing, leftover fabric large enough for squares is given to the quilters. Smaller pieces of fabric are given to Pet Beds.

If Casa Amigas, Pet Beds or Quilters can't use the fabric, it's donated to the Golden Goose or Tri Community Food and Clothing Bank.

Your fabric donations are greatly appreciated and used in many ways.

Let’s look at a typical piece and find out. The bracelet above was priced at $80. What are the facts behind that price? The sterling silver cost the maker $27.51. The turquoise cabochon was $26.32. The state tax (8.6%) and the SCOV fee (10%) were $10.02, adding up to $63.85 in total production cost, leaving $16.15 as profit. Dividing the profit by the number of hours (27) it took to make the bracelet shows that the person made the equivalent of $0.60 per hour. Obviously, most of our silversmiths aren’t looking to make a real profit; they do cause it is interesting and fun.

Spring Fling with Wye Mace front and center.

The winds of change never stopped blowing in the month of March. Classes and workshops galore. We now have a whopping 108 members thanks to all the new folks in the neighborhood. Spring Fling on March 5 was a great success with members accepting the amendments to bylaws and meeting new board members.

Thank you to Dennis Porter, Tony Masterjohn, Resa Lankes and Shirley Sherriff for the help with beginners stained glass class. We thank Ed Caine and Juliet Williams as monitors and Nancy Eckhoff for help with Morton Board workshop. We as a club are only as good as our volunteers who make it a success.

Our club was founded in 1996 by Wye Mace. She has been a great volunteer in this community and has decided to move on to independent living and will be missed by all the club members that she mentored. Our best wishes go with her.

Next meeting Wed., May 16, 1:30 PM, Desert Oasis Al Zigalla was a mechanical engineer by profession. When he retired, machining in metal wasn't accessible, so he shifted his focus to wood.

Over the past 25 years, Al has enjoyed making large items such as Navajo weaving looms and all of the related tools, as well as mediumsized items such as intricately segmented bowls and custom bread boards. Most recently, he crafted smaller items including wood pens, soft-drink can openers, toothpick Al enjoys crafting intricate de- pots and now wooden key chains. signs in his work.

For ten years, he also taught a woodworking class for ladies in his community.

The Woodshop had another successful series of beginning equipment classes taught by Don Jovag. These classes are held during the month of February and are free to attend. Our appreciation is extended to Don and those who assisted him for their time and experience.

The design, development and delivery of the James Webb Space Telescope, scheduled for launch in 2019. It is a replacement for the Hubbell Space Telescope and will have 18 hexagonal mirrors. It will be 7.5 times bigger than Hubbell and will allow astronomers to see further into space. It will be placed far out in space at the L2 Lagrangian point between the gravity pulls of Mars and Earth.

Our April book selection is We Were the Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter. In this, her debut novel, Ms. Hunter explores the harrowing struggles and ultimate triumph of the Kurc family starting in Poland in 1939 and continuing throughout World War II. The story is based upon the experiences of Hunter's own family.

At our May meeting we will discuss the multiple award winning-book Becoming Nicole by Amy Ellis Nutt. Ms. Nutt, a Pulitzer Prize-winning science reporter for the Washington Post, writes the true story of a transgender girl, her identical twin brother, and an ordinary American family's extraordinary journey to understand, nurture, and celebrate the uniqueness in us all.

The Prepare & Share Dinner Club finished the year with a very busy month. March's theme of "A Taste of Spring" was enjoyed at individual homes with menus such as St. Patrick's and Easter favorite foods.

The Farewell Dinner with a theme of "Food From the Pacific Rim" featured Samoan pulled pork, luau long rice, fresh carved pineapples and finished off with Maui Amaretto custard tart.

Officers for the coming year were nominated and voted on at this meeting. We are looking forward to a "delicious" year.

It’s hard to believe this season is winding down. The Kactus Kickers (KK) dance classes are done until fall with everyone amazed at how far they’ve come in so little time. Joan and Frank were thanked with a gift card at the final class for their above-and-beyond instruction and help.

“Dancing Under the Desert Sky” on Friday, April 13, Auditorium, is the member appreciation dance. The menu is guaranteed to make all want to dance a few extra dances to work off those delicious calories. All who attend will be in the appreciation gift raffles.

Aquatone is a toning water workout that incorporates a variety of rhythmic body movements performed in the water.

This aquatic exercise class enhances cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance.

We meet Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 9 AM in the winter, 8 AM in the summer at the AFC pool. There is no fee to join the club or for the class. The teachers are club member volunteers. Being able to do a basic swim stroke is very helpful. Items used in the class are buoys, board, noodle, ball and fitness band. Most are available at the pool. A band can be purchased from Marcia for $5. We assign an experienced member to a newcomer to help with learning the various movements. You will get a good work out in a fun class.

Joseph Pilates wrote that "physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness." To enjoy and get the full benefits of Pilates, a person needs to understand and apply the basic principles, which takes a little time and patience. Although different from other forms of exercise, Pilates is always enjoyable, interesting, challenging and can even be addictive!

Our classes teach balance, breathing, focusing on your core (abdomen and back muscles) while controlling your movements. There is constant motion from one exercise to the next. As a result, strength and stamina are developed. Your spine is lengthened, and flexibility and mobility of the joints and posture will improve. We have two experienced instructors who teach the Joseph Pilates system to seniors. The cost is only $8/class and the annual club dues are $20 pp.

A monthly schedule of our 20-60 mile rides is available on our website. Our well-tested loop routes support a wide variety of abilities and usually include a mid-ride coffee stop.

We also offer a mountain bike option on Wednesdays, which most often heads out into the Tortolita rangelands.

POP Tennis is tennis played on shorter, narrower tennis courts with shorter solid racquets, lower compression tennis balls and the same scoring and rules as tennis except for one underhand serve. Spring is the perfect time of year to travel the southwest and enjoy its history and beauty. In March a contingent of Sundowners visited Lake Powell and Antelope Canyon, while closer to home we celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with an old fashioned Irish spread at the Activity Center.

At the March club meeting election of officers was held.

These active members contribute to the ongoing success of the club that we all appreciate. The program was a presentation by local SCOV resident Larry Castriotta, who briefed us about the worthwhile benefits of membership in the FMCA (Family Motor Coach Association). Membership is now open to trailer units as well as single chassis coaches.

In April there are two trips planned. Usery State Park, near Mesa, is the destination for one group of explorers, while birdwatchers will head to Portal, AZ, and the nearby beautiful Chiricahua Mountains.
