Association News From the Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community.

All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online.

No single person, no particular group, runs or drives Sun City. We are a community of experienced, capable, intelligent and able, working together with our committees, our staff and our General Manager and Board.

If you have questions or concerns about the way in which SCOV develops and arises at the sum of the dues for the next year, come to the Finance and Budget committee and see and follow that process. This committee is made up of a group of very experienced financial analysts and budget professionals. They know what they are doing, have the background to prove it and balance all the needs and wants of SCOV to address the financial challenges of our community.

They know what they are doing.

If you have questions about the infrastructure and well-being of the community, go to the Properties Committee. This committee collaborates with the SCOV operations facility group to assess the condition of buildings and grounds, establishing both short- and long-term objectives to ensure that SCOV is properly maintained both now and in the future. They know what they are doing.

If you can think back to when you first moved here or if you are a recent arrival, one of the things that struck you was the consistent orderly and frankly beautiful appearance of the community. SCOV is maintained that way through the never-ending hard work of the Architectural Review Committee.

SCOV has standards and, while sometimes those standards get in the way of some seemingly wonderful idea or concept, they keep us on track and keep the community looking wonderful. The members of this committee are trained and knowledgeable. They know what they are doing.

Although many of us are older, we bring decades of expertise, sharp intellect and a strong determination to demonstrate our abilities. We do that through our committees. They are the staff that do the demanding work before recommendations, improvements and potential efforts are brought before the Board of Directors for a decision.

There are several more important and impactful committees and Task Forces working every day to make SCOV great. Committees, made up of bright and capable individuals are how we get things done.

Welcome to another year in moving SCOV forward. We begin this term welcoming our two new members, Lesley Chace and Dave Olson. We look forward to the fresh perspectives and experiences they bring to the table.

As we begin working for our community, we readily accept the challenge inherent to every Board, building upon the accomplishments of those that served before us. Under the leadership of the previous president, this standard was set high. Last year was a period of discovery and improvements. Much-needed repairs have been made, our financial health continued to get stronger and open communications continue to build trust throughout the community.

Our agenda for this term is to build on these past successes, but the Board cannot do this alone. Every past achievement shares a common thread, talented members of the community stepping forward to volunteer.

Currently, one of our biggest challenges is to replenish the talent pool of our committees and task forces. While our clubs and amenities provide wonderful social outlets, our committees offer those same social connections while allowing us to make lasting improvements to the community. Our commitment to open meetings afford you the opportunity to “shop” for the right fit. I encourage you to attend any meeting to see where your unique talents might best contribute before making a personal commitment. I suggest Architectural Review, Architectural Inspection and Neighborhood Pride due to their critical role in keeping our community attractive.

Finally, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to our two departing Board members, President Jane Fairchild and Director Eileen Buskirk for their dedication, service and invaluable contributions. Their leadership, insight and commitment played a significant role in the past accomplishments and setting the stage for continued improvements. We wish them many years of enjoying the benefits of the community they worked so hard to improve.

Wildlife in SCOV

By Mariana Corella & Laura Hackenbrock As dwellers of the Sonoran Desert, we are all familiar with the unique and beautiful wildlife we get to share our homes with. We live amongst javelinas, coyotes, hummingbirds, deer, rabbits, hawks, and dozens of other special animals. It is important to remember to be kind and respecful of these creatures. Some animal lovers in the community are working to make sure we all maintain a healthy relationship with them.

As some of you may know, great horned owls have made a nest close to the Gift Shop, and we have an update brought to you by SCOV resident and AZ Raptor Center’s Laura Hackenbrock, “By now, you’ve probably heard the heartwarming news, this spring, our SCOV Great Horned Owl nest welcomed an unexpected addition. An orphaned chick, rescued and in need of a family, was placed into the nest through the Arizona Raptor Center’s Re‑Nest program.

Volunteers search for active nests each year, and this season, ours became the chosen refuge.

The little owl arrived just after sunrise on April 10. Though it was clearly younger, one to two weeks behind the resident owlets, the family accepted it almost immediately. Within a day, the newcomer had blended into the nest’s daily rhythm as if it had always belonged there.

Mom kept a steady watch from a nearby branch, and on windy days, she climbed into the nest to shield the chicks with her body. Dad hunted through the night, returning with meals that Mom carefully prepared, tearing prey into small pieces for eager beaks. As the owlets grew, they quickly learned to feed themselves from delivered food.

At about five weeks old, the youngsters began ‘branching,’ venturing out of the nest to test their balance on nearby limbs.

One day, an older owlet’s first attempt at flight knocked the nest loose, sending all the chicks onto surrounding branches sooner than expected. Still, they adapted quickly, gripping their new perches and watching the world from their elevated vantage points.

By seven weeks, they were taking short, tentative flights, small but thrilling steps toward independence. Yet their time with their parents is far from over. Great Horned Owl families often remain together for up to nine months, with the young continuing to receive food and guidance as they slowly learn to hunt on their own.

Mark your calendar for Tuesday, November 10 when the AZ Raptor Center will be making a special presentation in SCOV. The program will be an exciting experience with raptors and discussion about the Re-Nest program.”

If you have recently noticed a herd of goats working along a portion of the wash, you are not imagining things. The goats have officially arrived at SCOV as part of a pilot project to evaluate an alternative method for brush and vegetation removal in our common areas.

As expected, the project has generated a variety of opinions and some controversy. Some residents have expressed concerns about the possible impact on local wildlife and the natural habitat within the wash. Others believe utilizing goats is a more environmentally friendly and natural approach compared to traditional mechanical clearing methods.

What we do know, is that the goats are proving to be an efficient tool in reducing dense brush and overgrowth. This method may ultimately save staff time and manpower while potentially providing a more effective way to maintain difficult terrain along the wash and golf course areas.

SCOV is not alone in trying this approach. Several HOA communities throughout Southern Arizona have successfully used goats for common area cleanup and fuel reduction projects, with many reporting positive results.

At this point, this remains an experiment and evaluation process for SCOV. Staff and management will monitor the effectiveness, cost, environmental impact, and overall results before determining whether this is something we would continue in the future.

At the very least, we hope residents have enjoyed watching the goats hard at work as they have quickly become one of the more talked-about visitors to the community. We also appreciate everyone continuing to maintain a safe distance from the animals and the fencing while the project is underway.

Things may seem quiet on the surface, but meaningful progress is underway on the Copper Center. The Work Team is meeting weekly with the architect, Kristine DiBone and her associate, Tom Leitner. Recently, they’ve been “zooming in” on specific design elements, reviewing and refining changes together in a collaborative and productive process.

Sharon Kennedy, Chair of the Work Team, is finalizing design needs with clubs in advance of these meetings and sharing them with Kristine. This ensures discussions stay focused as the project moves toward final design. Conversations are lively and practical, addressing feasibility, identifying cost savings, simplifying where possible and making sure the space is used effectively. Most importantly, the team is asking. “Does the design meet club needs?”

All clubs will be asked to review, approve and sign off on the final floor layout before the architect proceeds to construction drawings. At the same time, Associate General Manager Robin Coulter and Technology Coordinator Chris Pacheco are meeting with clubs to better understand their technology needs. While the infrastructure is already in place, some clubs such as Technology and Genealogy will rely on it more heavily than others, such as Table Tennis.

Robin is working to ensure the system supports everyone effectively.

Lastly, I’ve been out of state dealing with family medical issues. You may have noticed that Todd Milton wrote my last column and Larry Webster reported to the Board in my ab-

sence. I’m grateful for their support. It’s a great reminder of the strength of this community and one of the best things about living in SCOV.

From approximately May to June 21, along the washes, golf course edges, and common areas, an unusual but highly effective landscape maintenance crew has been hard at work. More than 180 goats and sheep from local herders at Natures Surprise Ranch LLC Goat Grazing. Known as “Nature’s original weed wackers,” these hardworking animals provide an environmentally friendly approach to vegetation management while bringing plenty of personality to the landscape.

The herd is made up of several different breeds, each contributing unique grazing abilities. Boers and Kikos are hardy, muscular goats that tackle dense brush and rough terrain with ease. Nubians and Alpines are excellent allaround grazers that help clear medium-height vegetation, while La Manchas and Oberhasli goats efficiently consume leafy weeds and lower shrubs. Spanish goats are particularly agile on rocky slopes and washes, and smaller Nigerian Dwarfs clean up low-growing vegetation and hard-to-reach areas. Savannas, known for their durability and strong appetites, assist with broad vegetation control across all grazing zones.

Adding to the team are Dorper and Black Belly sheep, breeds known for their ability to graze grasses efficiently.

Their inclusion helps create a balanced landscaping approach by addressing vegetation types that goats may bypass. Together, the herd naturally clears overgrowth at multiple levels — low, medium and high — creating a thorough and sustainable maintenance process.

This goatscaping session has even welcomed new arrivals, with several baby goats born while on site, delighting observers and adding to the charm of the project. Protecting and guiding the herd are two dedicated dogs. One is a Kangal and Great Pyrenees mix that remains with the animals overnight as their guardian against nocturnal predators. The second dog, Orian, works alongside the herders during the day, helping move the herd safely and efficiently from one grazing location to the next before returning with the team each evening. While the herders supervise the herd during the day, temporary electric fencing keeps the animals safely contained and is moved every one to three days depending on the desired level of vegetation clearing.

Through this innovative process, Natures Surprise demonstrates how natural grazing can provide effective, cost-conscious and eco-friendly landscape maintenance. In many areas, the herd can clear vegetation in approximately six weeks, work that could otherwise take maintenance crews up to three months to complete using traditional methods.

As a pilot program, the project also provides an opportunity to evaluate long-term benefits such as improved vegetation management, reduced fuel usage and a more sustainable approach to maintaining washes, golf course perimeters and common areas.

In Arizona, it is against the law to hire an unlicensed contractor for any project where the total cost of labor and materials is $1,000 or more or if the job requires a building permit. Arizona law (A.R.S. § 32-1121) mandates that anyone performing construction work above this threshold must be licensed by the Arizona Registrar of Contractors (AZ ROC).

For more detailed information, please see https://roc.az.gov/ rules.

Key points regarding unlicensed contracting in Arizona: • $1,000 Threshold: This includes all labor and materials and you cannot split a project into smaller contracts to avoid this rule.

• Permit Requirement: Even if the project is under $1,000, if a building permit is required, a licensed contractor must be used.

• Handyman Exemption: Unlicensed individuals can only work on projects where the total value is under $1,000 and no permit is needed.

• Risks: Unlicensed contracting is a Class 1 Misdemeanor in Arizona. Furthermore, hiring unlicensed individuals leaves you without access to the ROC’s complaint process if the work is defective and unlicensed contractors have no legal right to sue for unpaid work.

Always verify a contractor’s license before hiring them by checking the AZ ROC website or calling 877-692-9762.

The Master Declaration, Tract Declarations and Development Standards 2.18.C.4 provide a clear direction for managing greenery within one’s yard. Besides weed control we have a “Duty” to be neighborly and promote safety. By example, within the front yard setback, three feet six inches is the maximum height of any bush or hedge. This keeps visibility between drivers and walkers within a measure of safety. For side and backyards, the maximum height is six feet. This height keeps plants under control and mitigating scenery visibility impairments for one’s neighbors. For some, managing neighbor visibility is even more critical. By example in Unit 15 (Cirrus Hill Dr, Tumble Brook, Meteorite Trail and half of Trade Winds Way) has a maximum three feet height for shrubbery that is within 15 feet of the back yard property line.

This month our artist in the spotlight is Sharon Henderson. Sharon has been contributing the results of her talents for quite some time. Knitting was something shehas enjoyed since she was very young. You will find lovely baby blankets and dishcloths all in various Sharon Henderson colors and materials available to meet the need. Always interested in exploring new things, vases have been decorated using a “paint pour” technique. This is a process Sharon enjoyed learning from her daughter. It will always guarantee something different and unique as you will seldom know how they will turn out, which Sharon says is half the fun.

As summer approaches, whether you’re at home or away, it’s important to keep in mind your responsibilities as a homeowner. Weeds growing in driveways, sidewalks and where cement meets asphalt should be removed promptly.

Ensure that any cacti or bushes in your yard do not overhang the sidewalk, posing a risk to pedestrians. Trees must be trimmed sufficiently high to avoid obstructing walkers or blocking the visibility of stop signs. Additionally, any exposed soil on your property should be covered with rock. If you have a corner lot, take a moment to inspect the street-facing side for weeds or other violations of community guidelines.

Remember that front yards should be free of artifacts, including empty pots; these should be filled with live plants, as artificial ones are prohibited. Lastly, for safety, make sure that any vegetation does not obscure your house numbers, which should be well-lit and visible from the street at all times. June is a very slow time for many of the activities around the community. However, the summer months start the busy season for golf course maintenance. During the winter months there aren’t many opportunities to aerify greens, aerify and verticut fairways or do any major projects without interrupting tournaments or impacting play during the peak golfing season.

Even though the heat of summer is miserable for golfers, the bermudagrass thrives with these higher temperatures.

The higher soil temperatures provide the best time to aerify greens, tees and fairways because they are able to recover quickly without disturbing as much golf. Aerification is necessary to provide oxygen, water and nutrients to the roots, remove thatch and relieve compaction developed over a season of heavy golf and cart traffic. This process provides a healthier and more playable turf in the long run.

Ever since it was announced the greens will be overseeded this fall there has been some confusion on what type of grass the greens will be overseeded with. The goal is to provide a good putting surface while also being less harmful to the underlying bermudagrass so a combination of Poa Trivialis and creeping bent grass will be used. Poa Trivialis or rough bluegrass, is not the same as Poa Annua or Annual Bluegrass. Poa Annua is the small, patchy weed with lots of seed heads that can be found on the greens and fairways.

Poa Trivialis provides a smooth putting surface, doesn’t have seed heads and has a darker green color.

The final Men’s 18 hole Member/Guest tournament and bash was held in mid April. President Bob Gannon called the meeting to order with the financial report. Congratulations to Mark Schmitbauer for his USA Weightlifting Championship and Rich Geasey’s hole in one. The account balance is around $8,000 before expenses for the tourney and bash.

The Men’s group donated $1,500 toward the new tee markers.

The tournament featured two different nine hole games format with three separate flights. We had a great turnout with over 60 players. The winners of the flights were: First Flight- Dean Silverlock and Tom Grawe Second Flight- Jim Ambrosio and Eric Vidinha Third Flight- Darrell Martin and Gary Rowley Congratulations to all winners and participants in this year’s games. As a board, we have been attempting to make all games as fair and fun as possible.

The official league calendar is complete for the 2025-2026 season, but we continue to play until the course closes in September. A few years back the league instituted a summer game of Skins which has become a favorite. Over the summer the league plays one official league game the first Thursday of the month with the remaining Thursdays devoted to a Skins Game. The nice part of Skins is that even if a player is having a bad day there is still a chance to win a Skin. So, if you are new to SCOV now is a great time to join, meet new folks and have some fun. League plays Thursday mornings with an 8:30 am shotgun tee time. “Half the time, Twice the fun.”

The Views Women’s 18-Hole League celebrated the end of the season on April 21 with a catered luncheon in the Activity Center. Golfers were recognized for their achievements in the various competitions held during the season. Prize money was awarded to Tana Wyrick for winning our three day Club Championship competition along with those who won or placed in their 2026 Club Champion Tana flights. Winners of the flights were: 1st Wyrick -right, Low Net flight Yvette Schulz, 2nd flight Barbara winner Eileen Buskirk - left Hall, 3rd flight Peg Bushong and 4th flight Mary Ellen Tovatt. The overall net winner of the Club Championship was Eileen Buskirk.

The 2026 Presidents Cup Champion was Yvette Schulz with Barbara Hall second, Judy Oliver third, and Cathy Morrow fourth.

State Medallion winners were Tana Wyrick, gross, and Eileen Buskirk and Peg Bushong tied for net. The most improved golfer was Becky Harkey.

I would also like to recognize a couple of our outstanding staff members. In the back of the house, Ryan Manley has become what you would call a “jack of all trades.” Ryan started as a dishwasher and has steadily worked his way up.

In the front of the house, Alyssa Boogard continues to shine as an excellent server, teammate and leader. She has recently enrolled at NAU to pursue Hospitality, and we are very proud of her accomplishments and future goals.

The Sculpture Club article in April was about Steve Restemayer’s use of the Chat GPT app to help refine choices on the featured sculpture project. Christine Takerian has been using AI for some time in formulating sculpture ideas. Her recent project was inspired by her cat, Charlie, pictured here.

She asked AI to create an image of Charlie as a Steampunk Fighter Pilot. The picture in the middle was what AI created.

Christine used the image to inform her Bas Relief Sculpture, pictured on the right. This was the first project that Christine used watercolor pencils to add color to the project.

Pictured is an A4M Skyhawk in progress. Each step in the process is usually well detailed in the instructions. The process can sometimes take weeks to complete with prepping parts off the sprews, painting and letting paint and glue to set properly.

This piece of equipment will be a huge asset to all the groups that use it and help reduce the physical effort involved in the process of creating quilts. A reminder that the printer in the Sewing Room is not intended for personal use. We have had several instances of personal items being copied or printed on the printer. As we try to keep costs down for our membership, such behavior is selfish. Paper and especially printer ink costs are absorbed by the membership.

The height of his loops is consistent and the back of his work is just as beautiful as the front. John uses the smallest cut (number 3) of wool strips to hook. This project took a couple of years to complete because John only worked on the project during our group’s meeting times.

Stained glass art can be many sizes and designs, from the smallest suncatchers to large windows. Fused Glass art refers to pieces of glass that are melted or “fused” together in a glass kiln. June is upon us and many of our seasonal residents have packed up and returned to their summer homes. We would like to remind everyone that in the slower months monitors are needed to keep the shop open.

We ask that all monitors check the sign-up list and volunteer for Bandsaw Box the open slots.

For June, we will highlight a bandsaw box that was created by gluing five one-inch thick boards together and cut out using only a bandsaw. The photo shows the finished product with draws open and felt liner showing. This is a popular project for beginners since it is easy in concept and a great way to learn the intricacies of the bandsaw and makes a nice product while learning and honing woodworking skills.

Another important day for astronomy is June 30, Asteroid Day. It is the United Nations sanctioned day of public awareness for the need of planetary defense from the risks that asteroids pose to Earth, due to being the anniversary of the Tunguska Event. In 1908 an approximately 30-meter diameter asteroid exploded above ground in Tunguska, Russia, knocking down approximately 80 million trees over an 830 square mile area. It’s been estimated at 1,000 times more powerful than the Hiroshima atomic bomb. Luckily, it happened in a remote area of Siberia and nobody is thought to have been killed.

What matters most to me?

This inner work is supported by mindful movement such as qigong, guided meditation and book study that draws from psychology, sociology, metaphysics, philosophy and meditation. Conscious aging is about accepting who we are now. Our meetings consist of a short period of easy mindful movement, followed by guided meditation and discussion.

Fido’s Friends Dog Club is a fun and social place for dogs and their owners. As seasonal residents head home for the season, the K9 Korral Dog Park along Del Webb Blvd returns to a quieter, more relaxed pace, a great time to let your pup enjoy some off-leash play. The park is open 24 hours a day and many members meet there daily to unwind while their dogs romp and socialize. Some small dog owners have proposed meeting in the upper park around 7 am.

Members meet without their dogs three times a year, on the third Thursdays of November, January and March.

We recently celebrated a highly successful year with our first annual club picnic held April 24.

Members enjoyed a BBQ and potluck dinner on the Catalina Vista Patio. This season, club members enjoyed several drive and dine events to local Cars and Coffee gatherings and the Club Picnic at Catalina Vista Tucson Auto Museum. In addition, members attended several local car shows, bringing home a variety of trophies. Monthly meetings featured guest speakers on topics of interest in the automotive industry and our monthly informal gatherings for breakfast at The Views Restaurant, furthered discussion surrounding the car hobby.

We look forward to next season beginning in October with a car show here in Sun City. We are planning several driving experiences and will be attending a host of local car shows.

Aquatone is a water workout that incorporates a variety of rhythmic body movements. This aquatic exercise class enhances cardiovascular fitness and muscle endurance.

It includes warm-up, cool down, various swim strokes and strength exercises. We use buoys, boards, noodles, balls and a fitness band. Most of these items are available at the pool. Participants need to be able to do a basic swim stroke.

Come beat the heat while getting healthy exercise. Our meeting time is 10 am. Join us Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The Arthritis Foundation recommends meeting when the air temperature is 77 degrees or warmer.

Our club performs gentle exercises which target all muscles. They are used by several health organizations to increase strength and balance, mobility and flexibility.

Exercise is helpful in managing arthritis, fibromyalgia, replaced joints, etc.. Some new members have expressed surprise at how quickly the first sessions had already increased their abilities to move. Others comment on improved stamina.

New members are always welcome. Our members are fun, accepting and welcoming. We frequently hear, “I came for the exercises and love all the friends I have made.”

Summer is here and both the Monday and Thursday Pilates classes are smaller and more personal. It’s a great time to try out Pilates. First, we do stretching exercises to warm up our muscles and then perform the Pilates mat routine, modifying some of the moves for those with limitations.

People ask “can the benefits of Pilates, which come from strengthening and stretching exercises, really develop the body’s core (your abdomen and back muscles), make you stronger overall, increase spine mobility and build flexibility?” The answer is a firm yes. We’re playing SCOV Hand & Foot cards every week at Catalina Vista. What is Hand & Foot, you might ask. It’s a terrific card game with elements of canasta, using multiple decks of cards, building sets with and without wild cards.

Games are typically four rounds with high scores reaching 10,000 points or more. We most often play in teams of two, but also can play individually when an odd number of players are present. As you can see in the picture, racquetball can be tough on the equipment. Although not common, racquets break periodically when the racquet hits the wall instead of the ball.

In this case, Jerry will need a new racquet which can cost anywhere between $25 to over $200. So we try not to hit the wall.

Well, summer has arrived and seasonal residents have taken flight. But there are still full time residents around to play in the air conditioned comfort of the Fitness Center. So if you’re looking for a great way to get or stay in shape while playing an indoor racquet sport, come on out. The schedule may not be quite as regular during the summer months but play will still continue on most Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, 7:30-9 am. Have a great and safe summer.
