Association News From the Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community.

All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online.

Among the many responsibilities of the Board of Directors one is a distinct pleasure: Selecting the recipients of the Distinguished Service Award. First established in 2001 as the Heroes Among Us Award, the current name was adopted in 2017. The purpose has not changed since the beginning, which is to honor residents who make remarkable contributions to our community. The process begins with an announcement to the community seeking nominations for this prestigious award. With so many nominations from the community, selecting the recipient was not an easy task.

This year the Board selected two individuals who exemplify the spirit of volunteerism and service to the entire community: Jim Huppert and Jim Senechal. They were instrumental in developing the new SCOV website, which went online in April of last year.

In late 2024, SCOV was faced with having their old website turned off by our hosting company due to support Jim Senechal issues. The new platform selected, Northstar, was not a simple product that you install like an application on a smartphone. It was like that gift we bought that had a sticker stating “Some assembly required,” that gave us cold chills. If the Northstar box had a sticker it would state “Incredible amount of assembly required and we didn’t include all of the parts.”

Knowing the difficulty in creating a new website on this platform was a huge undertaking, the management team knew we needed many skilled volunteers Jim Huppert to accomplish this within the time constraints.

“The Jims” as they have become identified, did the heavy lifting necessary to create the content for the new website. They spent many hours analyzing the old website and helped lay out the organization for the new one. They spent

countless hours creating content and forms and engaging with the supplier to resolve issues and get changes necessary to improve the usability. They continued their work in helping develop and provide training for residents when the website was placed in service. They continue to help resolve issues and provide enhancements for our website. Due to their skills and dedication, SCOV has a new, easier to use, secure website with more features than our previous one, including a mobile app.

I would like to start by welcoming the newly seated SCOV Board of Directors. I look forward to working alongside each of you and supporting your goals for the coming year. Strong collaboration between the Board, staff and residents is what keeps this community running effectively and I am confident we will continue to build on that momentum.

To our residents, this is also a great time to get involved.

Our committees play a critical role in shaping the direction and quality of life within the community. We are always looking for volunteers who want to contribute their time, ideas and expertise. If you have a passion for a particular area, whether it is finance, activities, facilities or communications, there may be a place for you. Serving on a committee is one of the most direct ways to make an impact and stay connected.

If you are interested, you can visit the community website to review available committees and apply online.

As we move into warmer months, many of you will be heading out of town for the summer. Safe travels for all of you and we look forward to welcoming you back in the fall.

Before you leave, take a few practical steps to prepare your home for the Sonoran Desert climate: • Adjust your thermostat to an appropriate setting (typically 85) to protect interior finishes and prevent exces sive heat buildup.

• Turn off the water supply or have a leak detection system in place to avoid costly damage.

• Arrange for periodic home checks by a neighbor, friend or service provider.

• Clear out perishables and take steps to prevent pests.

• Secure outdoor items and ensure landscaping is maintained to HOA standards.

• Hold or forward mailand deliveries to avoid buildup.

Taking a little time now can prevent bigger issues later.

A Year of Association Events

It’s hard to believe a full year has already flown by since I was hired here at SCOV. What an incredible journey it’s been planning shows and events for this amazing community. There’s always something to do here in SCOV as there are events happening everyday. As I reflect on my first year, I’m so grateful for the many memorable experiences we’ve shared together.

Here are just some of them: Free Monthly Movies, Lectures, Monthly Wellness Talk Series, Seminars, Arizona Diamondbacks and Cardinals trips, Dancers, Past Presidents Luncheon, New Resident Meet & Greets, bands gal ore, localand national, Vaccine Clinic, Annual Car Show, Club Presidents’ Annual Meeting, 4th of July and Holiday Parades, Holiday Door Decorating Contest, Annual Health & Wellness Fair, Club Fair, Annual Courtyard Sale, Trivia Night.

The talent within our clubs never cease to amaze. I’ve truly enjoyed getting to know and working alongside dozens of our dedicated club leaders and members.

Having attended many shows in Tucson over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing some exceptional local

performers and it’s incredibly rewarding to bring that level of talent for our community to enjoy.

Serving as the staff liaison for the 40 & Fabulous Steering Committee has been a true honor. The committees and subcommittees are filled with creative, passionate individuals and it’s a joy to play a part in Sun City Oro Valley’s 40th Anniversary Celebration next year. We have so much planned to celebrate this momentous occasion and we hope you are as excited as we are.

One st andout highlight was attending a band showcase in Mesa sponsored by TAD Management, where I had the chance to discover several truly fantastic bands, some of which we hope to bring to you in the future.

Most of all, I want to sincerely thank each of you for your support and enthusiasm. It has been such a joy getting to know you and being part of these special moments to help enrich your living here in SCOV. Stay tuned, there’s so much more to come.

Are we, Sun City, willing to wait until 2032 for the Copper Center renovation to be complete?

When I ran for the Board, the biggest question was always what will we do with the Copper Center building? The answer hasn’t changed. It will become a center for our artisans and clubs. Realizing that vision takes funding, we won’t begin until the resources are in place.

The decision to purchase has been made by our community twice. Now the question is how quickly we can bring it to life.

At our current pace, the Copper Center won’t be ready until 2031 or 2032. Meanwhile, Artisan Center clubs are already feeling the strain of very limited space with growing memberships. Remember, our artisans have been asking for additional space for almost a decade, since 2018. If you missed the Artisan Center Open House, then you missed a chance to see just how in need they are. We can and must do better for them.

Fundraising gives us that opportunity. At this time in our lives, we don’t know our future except we do know that most of our lives are behind us. How do we want to spend our time? How do we invest in the quality of our lives? Many of us are financially comfortable. We can support our neighbors and ourselves by investing in our own community with donations to move the Copper Center forward. Every contribution, no matter the size, moves the project forward. Donations are simple to make at the Welcome Center and we’ve already begun with over $7,000 raised.

With plans and cost estimates coming soon, we’ll have a clear path ahead. The Copper Center isn’t just a building, it’s a vision and an investment in our community, creativity and future.

Let’s accelerate the timeline. Let’s come together. Let’s make it happen.

On March 24, 2026 the Sun City Oro Valley Voting Membership adopted new provisions for the Master Declaration and made changes to the Bylaws. The 7th Amended Master Declaration and 23rd Amended & Restated Bylaws were born.

You are encouraged to review these updates in the documents. Please go to our website and sign in. The revised documents are listed under Governing Documents/Bylaws and Master Declaration. If you prefer a paper copy of these documents, they are available at the Welcome Center. Several of you still maintain a book of all things Sun City and may want to replace the old documents with updated ones.

Please remember if you wish to make any changes to the exterior of your lot or home, you probably need some sort of HOA approval. If you have questions, contact Katy Mosier. If the submission process seems daunting, she will guide you to an easy completion. Rather than skipping the process, calland make an appointment so your residence file is always up to date.

May is “Get Caught Reading Month”. This nationwide campaign, founded in 1999 by the Association of American Publishers, was designed to promote the joy of reading, often celebrated by people sharing photos of themselves reading or visiting libraries. All month long, we’re celebrating the joy of reading, so, grab a book, any book, any genre. Whether you’re into fiction, biographies, historical fiction, romance, there’s something for everyone here at the Sun City Library.

Next, take a picture of yourself, reading a Sun City Library book and submit it to sherrysmall@comcast.net by May 30.

Photos will be posted in the library and the most fun and creative photo will win a prize. It’s always the right time to get lost in a good book.

We wouldn’t have great books to read without great authors. It’s such a pleasure when authors come to visit and I wanted to thank everyone who attended our author talks so far this year. I know the authors, Kaira Rouda, Erika Hamden, Roger Naylor, Beck Masterman and Christopher Valen had a great time here and loved our community. These author talks are very popular and the wonderful support our community gave through buying their books helped make it an even more valuable experience for them as well.

More authors will be heading our way in the fall. Until then, happy reading.

No matter what your goal is: losing weight, maintaining your current weight or just trying to eat healthier, your best bet is keeping track of the calories you intake. It’s easy to say “eat less, move more,” but without tracking your intake of calories it can be more of a hit and miss than effective dieting. While the endeav or of tracking your calories may seem like a hassle, the benefits truly do outweigh the inconvenience. It may seem like keeping track of the calories you intake is a nuisance, confusing and even difficult but with the right tools it can be made easier. To properly keep

track of your calories it’s important to consult the nutritional label of whatever you’re eating and to accurately measure your intake.

The Active Health Committee is taking a break from monthly presentations for the summer, but we want to encourage you to keep active and healthy. There are many opportunities to keep walking when it is hot outside. Walk with friends Tuesdays/Thursdays, 7-8 am, Auditorium. If that is too early, then walk indoors Mondays/Fridays, 1-2 pm, Activity Center.

Or, if you just like to walk outside, form a walking group. Make a date and bring a friend so you will always have someone to walk with who will motivate you and make it fun. Ask others to join you and have the movement snowball.

Last month, I reported on the many tours our ambassadors have conducted since the start of the year. Over the past month, 30 homes were sold, marking another period of transition within our community. It is always a bit bittersweet to see residents of SCOV turn the page and move on to the next chapter of their lives, leaving behind friendships and memories.

At the same time, these changes create opportunities for new residents to discover and enjoy the many amenities SCOV has to offer. New residents can choose to quickly become engaged, filling their calendars with social events, activities and volunteer opportunities that help keep our community vibrant and thriving.

The continued success of these tours plays an important role in helping prospective residents envision themselves as part of SCOV. The positive feedback we receive reflects not only the quality of our amenities, but also the welcoming spirit and active lifestyle that clearly defines SCOV. If you have suggestions on how we can improve our Aquatic and Fitness Centers, please go to the SCOV website and fill out the AFC Agenda Submission Form located on the committee page. You might consider using a pool mosquito repellent tablet such as Mosquito Dunks or other products to prevent the growth of mosquito larvae in your pool. Secure covers that seal over the pool are also helpful. Everyone has trash cans. Many are kept in the garage and many residents have made investments inorder to keep their cans on the side of their homes. Section 2.5 of the Development Standards is pretty clear: All Trash Containers must be covered and stored on a lot not visible from Neighboring Property or the street.

There are suggested materials that can be used to achieve this effort, however the final result should still be achieved.

If we can see your trash cans then you have not invested enough to hide them. It is not sufficient just to have them behind a gate, short piece of wall, a single bush or behind your primary AC unit. We all know the term: out of sight, out of mind. If you can see blue it’s time to consider an upgrade.

Each month we feature two of our many talented consignors. This month is no exception.

Lori Nalewicki enjoys working with clay and watercolors.

Using clay, Lori is making planters. Or, if you choose, the planters can be used as decorative bowls. The planters come in various shapes and beautiful glaze combinations. In addition, you will find small solar luminaries, multi-colored glazed plates and small bowls. Her original watercolors are printed on greeting cards or on 5-inch by 7-inchand 8-inch by 10-inch matted prints. The designs are colorful, whimsicaland include our beloved southwest critters.

Janet Breen is new to the Gift Shop and is sharing her “touchable art”. Janet is needle-felting. Using a variety of needles, she forms colored wool into framed paintings, desert plants and 3D sculptures. With Janet’s love of art she has also been known to create paintings and drawings using mixed media and silk screen.

Your Long Range Planning Committee (LRPC) serves as an advisory group dedicated to shaping the future of SCOV. Our primary mission is to develop a rolling 10-year plan that maintains and enhances resident quality of life while keeping the community competitive for active adults. The committee evaluates new project proposals, both capitaland non-capitaland provides fact-based recommendations to the Board of Directors.

It gathers resident input, analyzes demographic and market trends and studies comparable communities to guide planning decisions. The LRPC prioritizes initiatives, collaborates with the Board and Finance Committee on funding and timelines and ensures plans reflect both current needs and future opportunities. Composed of 5-7 resident members, the committee operates transparently, meets regularly and reviews its charter annually to remain responsive and effective.

Summer usually means more open garage doors, as residents try to cool down their vehicles after coming home from shopping. Driving around during evening patrol is usually pleasant during summer and you may even find some folks on their front patio, with a friendly wave as we drive by.

An ideal candidate has an engineering, technical or construction background. Ongoing activities include inspections of SCOV buildings and facilities, inspections of chalk creek and advising staff on topics as requested. Intermittent activities include projects requested by the Board, the staffor as deemed appropriate by the committee. In addition to the monthly review which normally takes a few hours, we have a monthly meeting with staff to help answer questions and provide guidance. Beginning May 14, our greens aeration and top-dressing program will start with the practice putting green. On Monday, May 18, the back nine will be closed for aerification while the front nine remains open for play. The following day, Tuesday, May 19, the front nine will be aerated and the back nine will reopen. When booking tee times during this period, please indicate whether you plan to play nine holes or play the same nine twice.

Starting Tuesday, May 26, fairway and rough aeration, along with top-dressing, will begin on the front nine, which will be closed through May 28. The following week, from Monday, June 1 through June 3, the back nine will be closed for the same process. We appreciate your patience as these

essential practices help us maintain excellent course conditions.

Our Chip & Putt Thursday events have concluded for the season and will return in the fall. The Grille @ The Turn will also reopen in the fall on Fridays and Saturdays. During the month of May, we will begin hosting outside tournament events throughout the summer.

For those looking to improve their game, we offer a variety of instructional opportunities throughout the summer with our professional staff. Group clinics are held every Tuesday at 8:00 AM, with Ladies-only clinics on Wednesdays. We will also host a Titleist custom club fitting on Saturday, May 2, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. May is the time of the year when the golf course maintenance department really starts to get busy. The transition from winter ryegrass to the summer bermudagrass is in full effect. The ryegrass has been chemically treated and is being slowly removed from the fairways, tees and green aprons as the bermudagrass is starting to come out of dormancy. This year the extremely hot temperatures that started in February and continued through March has sped up the process.

Starting May 26, the fairways are going to be aerified with large solid tines followed with a heavy topdressing. The s and aeration and sand provide many benefits to the turf.

Compaction is relieved from all the golf cart traffic, oxygen can get to the roots organic material is reduced and the bermudagrass prefers growing in sand than the native decomposed granite soils. The sand also provides a smoother, firmer playing surface for the golfers. The topdressing piles of sand will again appear in the main parking lot in early May. May 18 and 19, the greens are going to be aerified and topdressed similar to the fairways. However, the greens will be aerified with smaller tines so the playing surface can heal quicker. Something different this summer is the greens will only be aerified twice to avoid disrupting the playing surface as much. However, the organic matter that is maintained with aerification still needs to be addressed. Instead of aerification, the greens will be verti-cut more frequently and followed by light topdressing.

Golf is way more fun when everyone helps keep the course looking good. So here’s a quick, easy reminder. When your ball hits the green and leaves a mark, give it a fast fix. It takes almost no time and keeps the putts rolling smooth for everyone behind you. Out in the fairway, Arizona turf dries out fast, so instead of replacing divots, just fill them with sand. It’s the best way to help the grass recover in this climate.

Pace of play matters too. You don’t need to rush, just stay ready. Grab a couple clubs if you’re unsure, walk with a little purpose and be aware of the group ahead and behind.

Keeping things moving makes the whole round feel better.

A few simple habits go a long way and they make the game more enjoyable for everyone on the course.

The regular season is wrapping up and it’s been a great one. We completed the annual tournament with Byron Hays and Pete Coy the winners. We held the final league meeting on April 2 and at that event we distributed The Winners the first edition of the official 9 Hole League ball markers. All in all, it was a great season and we are confident that each succeeding season will be better and better.

If you are just arriving in Sun City and want to get on the course, you can join anytime. The official season runs from October 1 to September 30 each year but don’t let those dates stop you. Come join us and start playing every Thursday. During the summer we play a skins game which has been a fun game. Half the time, twice the fun.

As our regular league season began to wind down in April, there were a lot of great events, winners, a tremendous amount of fun and camaraderie to celebrate. The Solheim Cup was a great three-day event. Captains chose players for the two teams of Hookers and Slicers. All three days were tight competition. Final results: Hookers won by one point on the final day, 22 to 21. A meal was shared together; the Solheim cup passed to the Hookers.

March 24 was a fabulous day for our Member/Guest Tournament and luncheon that followed. The groups were flighted with twosome winners in each flight. We collected over $500 and gave it back in cash to the raffle winners.

Clay Club new member orientation classes are very popular and are required for someone to become a Clay Club member and work in the two studios. Experienced club volunteers conduct the orientation classes.

The first class is the clay orienNew Member orientation Class tation. In this class, new members create a new object from a piece of clay to one ready to bisque. They also learn important information about the Pottery Studio to ensure they correctly use the studio materials when preparing for work, working and cleaning up. The second class overviews the glazing process. Each new member takes their bisqued creation and learns how to correctly glaze it. They are introduced to different glazes and glaze combinations in addition to learning how to work knowledgeably in the ceramics studio. The attached picture shows some new members in anorientation class.

You can donate bags from Fry’s, Safeway, Walmart, etc., but keep in mind that we cannot use newspaper bags or the thin plastic produce bags for this project. Stained Glass art is the term given to art created by cutting out pieces from stained glass sheets and soldering them together using either lead came or copper foil. Stained glass art can be many sizes and designs, from the smallest suncatchers to large windows. Fused Glass art refers to pieces of glass that are melted or “fused” together in a glass kiln. Glass fusing can create Xymas ornaments, jewelry, dishes and bowls, vases and glass “paintings”. There is no universal best shutter speed or best aperture in photography, because every picture is a trade-off. A fast shutter can freeze action, but it can also strip away motion and energy. A slow shutter can blur motion beautifully or ruin a shot Chihuly Sunset if the blur is unwanted. The same is true of aperture. A wide aperture can isolate a subject with soft background blur, while a narrow aperture can hold an entire scene in focus. Neither is inherently better.

The right choice depends on the subject, the light and, most of all, the photographer’s intent. Good photography is not about memorizing settings. It is about choosing deliberately and creatively.

Our final competition will be May 13. Club members will choose the best of the best pictures of this season. The club will then go on hiatus until September.

In May, we will highlight a project from one of our masters at wood turning.

The photo shows a wooden bowl, in process and lathe turned from a solid piece of ironwood. It was designed and fabricated by Ran Nathe. It takes time to remove the bark, cut the basic shape, square the block for mounting and then start the turning process.

The individual patterns are natural to Ironwood Bowl in Process the wood and, when finished, will look elegant. Ran has fabricated many of these bowls over the years and no two are alike. This represents just one of the many skills one can develop and demonstrates another of the capabilities offered by our machines. This bowl is over 12 inches in both height and diameter.

Unique Wheels Car Club stole the show at Desert Diamonds Car Show, March 7 Oro Valley Marketplace. Eleven member cars were part of the 165 car show field. Congratulations to Roger and Betty Benasutti for taking first place in the Best Classic category with their 1931 Ford Model A. On the same day, member Tim Aalbu’s 1936 Auburn won the People’s Choice award at the Mountain View Baptist Church Car Show. The Club has been busy cruising as a group and taking in the sights. March 18, we visited the new Tucson Car Museum, followed by lunch at the Arizona Pizza Company. Aquatone is a water workout that incorporates a variety of rhythmic body movements. This aquatic exercise class enhances cardiovascular fitness and muscle endurance.

It includes warm-up, cool down, various swim strokes and strength exercises. We use buoys, boards, noodles, balls and a fitness band. Most of these items are available at the pool. Participants need to be able to do a basic swim stroke.

The Arthritis Foundation recommends meeting when the air temperature is 77 degrees or warmer.

Our club performs gentle exercises which target all muscles. They are used by several health organizations to increase strengthand balance, mobility and flexibility.

Exercise is helpful in managing arthritis, fibromyalgia, replaced joints, etc. Some new members have expressed surprise at how quickly the first sessions had already increased their abilities to move. Others comment on improved stamina.

New members are always welcome. Our members are fun, accepting and welcoming. We frequently hear, “I came for the exercises and love all the friends I have made.”

All of us in EE are especially proud of one of our members, Deb Mayworm, who has been a faithful participant in class for 16 years and is an exceptional bike rider. Deb serves as a wonderful example of someone dedicated to maintaining her healthand fitness, not only for everyday life, but also by going the extra mile with the WOW’s on challenging bike rides across TucDeb Mayw orm on her 54 son’s hilly terrain. Her commitment mile Birthday bike ride inspires us all.

While not everyone can bike long distances or lift a weighted bar for 50 minutes in class, each member is encouraged to strive toward their own potential.

Our class is filled with men and women who move to the music, laugh at Sally’s jokes and enjoy the brain food provided in each session. New techniques for building strong muscles are regularly introduced, keeping our members engaged and motivated.

We will miss our friends who are leaving for the summer.

To get the full benefits of Pilates a person needs to be patient and, at first, take a little extra time when performing the exercises as they may be different from those you are used to doing. They are fun, interesting and challenging. Pilates can even become addictive. It teaches proper balance, breathing, how to focus on your core (abdomen and back muscles) and movement control. This constant movement from one exercise to another results in developing more strengthand stamina. Posture is improved. The spine lengthens and joint flexibility and mobility increase. The club has two experienced instructors who teach the mat classes and, if necessary, modify some of the moves for us.
