Association News From the Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community.

All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online.

It has been both a privilege and a pleasure to serve on our Board of Directors for the past three years and for the last two years as Board President. I sincerely appreciate the confidence you placed in me to help guide our community through current challenges while continuing to plan for the future. Together, we have taken on projects intended to benefit our residents today while helping ensure our community remains attractive and welcoming for generations to come. During this time, the Board has also worked to strengthen long-term planning, improve communication with residents and move forward on several important community initiatives.

The responsibilities of the Board of Directors are to: 1. maintain, preserve and enhance the assets and facilities of the association, 2. listen to residents, set aside personal agendas and represent the interests of the entire community and 3. fulfill our fiduciary responsibility to protect the interests of the corporation. These are significant responsibilities and they are taken very seriously.

A key component supporting these responsibilities is clear and consistent communication. Over the past few years, the Board has worked to expand and strengthen communication with residents through Board Tipster articles, weekly email updates, Board meetings and reports, BOD/GM Chats, the Board webpage and periodic direct Board messages.

Because Board membership changes by two or three members each term, maintaining continuity in key Board processes is important. We have newly established Board Standard Operating Procedures that can evolve as the community’s needs change, Board Meeting Guidelines that set expectations for attendees and monthly Board Committee updates highlighting each committee’s activities and accomplishments. I remain confident in the strength of our community and the many residents who care deeply about its future. Our willingness to stay engaged, communicate openly and work together will continue to ensure that this remains a place we are all proud to call home.

As we move forward, if you ever have questions or hear concerning rumors, please don’t hesitate to contact the appropriate staff member or Board Director for clarification.

By the time you read this, our community will have welcomed two new members to the Sun City Oro Valley Board of Directors. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all four candidates who stepped forward and offered to serve.

Running for the Board is no small commitment; it requires time, energy and genuine dedication to the community and every candidate deserves recognition for their willingness to contribute. I am excited to begin working with the newly elected Board members as we tackle the priorities and responsibilities that come with guiding Sun City Oro Valley.

Their fresh perspectives, combined with the knowledge of our experienced members, will ensure we continue making thoughtful decisions that benefit our entire community. At the same time, I want to offer a sincere thank you to Jane Fairchild and Eileen Buskirk as they conclude their service on the Board. Both have been invaluable contributors, dedicating countless hours and thoughtful input to support the community. Their commitment, insight and active participation in board discussions have left a lasting impact and they will be a tough act to follow. The newly elected Board members will officially take their seats on May 1. In April, they will have a special meeting to elect its officer positions and begin establishing goals and priorities for the coming year.

In addition, the Board will participate in a full-day training session with several of our professional experts, providing essential information to guide their decisions and strengthen our governance.

I also want to celebrate another cornerstone of our community: our committee volunteers. Last month, we honored all our volunteers at a wonderful luncheon, highlighting the meaningful work they’ve been doing across the community.

From planning events to maintaining our facilities, their dedication ensures that Sun City Oro Valley remains a vibrant and welcoming place. Simply put, we couldn’t do it without all of you. Thank you for your time, energy and enthusiasm.

As we pass the torch to our new Board members and continue building on the strong foundation set by those who came before, I am confident that we are heading into another fantastic year at SCOV. Together, with engaged Board members, committed volunteers and an active community, we will continue to make Sun City Oro Valley a place you are all proud to call home.

The Sun City Singers - Why We Sing

“Music builds a bridge, it can tear down a wall” is a great truth. Those are lyrics from “Why We Sing” which the Sun City Singers have performed several times over the past few years, and if you come to the Spring concert on April 7 or April 10 you will hear it again!

Sun City Singers was one of the earliest clubs to organize in Sun City, and has regularly presented three concerts each year. Over the years gifted SCOV residents have invested their talents as singers, pianists, and directors. I recently found a program and score to Handel’s “Messiah” which the Singers performed – with an orchestra! – in the late 1990’s including gowns for the ladies and tuxedos for the gents.

While we will not have an orchestra providing accompaniment (and no gowns or tuxes!), our Spring concert includes some great music.

This year the April concert selections are drawn from the history of America; it is our nation’s 250th birthday after all.

From songs of the early days of our fight for independence, to ballads from the westward expansion, and somber piec-

es about the price paid for our freedoms, the April program aims to celebrate our country’s love of freedom and to honor the ideals of our nation and those who have served.

Our 4th of July concerts are always chock full of patriotic music, with call outs to the branches of service and recognition of veterans along the way. Some of the singers, and more than a couple in the audience, have been known to wear their uniform for this event. And with free ice cream following the singing, it makes for a wonderful afternoon.

The early December concerts reflect on the holiday season and always include a nice mix of sacred and secular songs. Many in SCOV and the surrounding communities consider that concert to be their kickoff to the holidays.

Tickets for the April 7 and April 10 concerts are still available for purchase in the Activity Center from Wednesday, April 1st through Friday, April 3rd between 9.00am and noon.

As the song goes, “Music is a language that can speak to one and all.” We would love to see you at our concerts!

The Copper Center is now fully open. Facility access cards and fobs are active, internet and Wi-Fi are installed, observation systems are in place and construction drawings are underway. Table Tennis members are already using their temporary space, while card and game players are gathering in the Community Room. The Music Club has begun practicing every Tuesday from 4–7 pm. If you enjoy hearing some rock-and-roll practice, stop by, otherwise you may want to plan around that time. Many members toured the Artisan Center and Copper Center during the March open houses and saw firsthand the crowded conditions some clubs faced. The new space will improve safety, accessibility and efficiency while also reducing the need to schedule shared spaces. It will also allow kilns to be relocated within the appropriate clubs and provide room for new technology along with improved electrical, ventilation and HVAC systems. These changes will free up valuable space in the Artisan Center for the Gift Shop, Clay Club and Woodshop. Table Tennis will gain a permanent home, eliminating frequent setup and takedown. The Loan Room and Costume Closet will have better space, better access to heat and air conditioning and become more functional.

The April and May Community Meetings will be postponed until fall. Construction drawings must be completed before we have cost estimates and renovation details to share. In addition, I will be away from SCOV this spring due to a family health need and expect to return in the summer. Updates will continue to be posted in This Week in SCOV and in the Tipster.

Tucson, Arizona has some of the most thoughtful night sky lighting requirements in the country, designed to protect the region’s dark skies. These regulations limit the brightness and direction of outdoor lighting, requiring fixtures to be shielded so light is cast downward rather than into the sky.

The rules also favor lower-intensity bulbs and warmer color temperatures to reduce glare and skyglow.

These measures are a good thing for several reasons.

They preserve Tucson’s spectacular night skies, making the area a destination for astronomers, stargazers and tourists.

Dark skies support the thriving research institutions in the region, including world-renowned observatories. Environmentally, reduced light pollution benefits nocturnal wildlife and helps maintain natural behavior patterns. Additionally, lower, well-directed lighting saves energy and reduces costs for residents and businesses. Tucson’s night sky requirements strike a balance between safety, sustainability and preserving the wonder of the cosmos.

Residents are encouraged to review the HOA Development Standards before installing or modifying exterior lighting to ensure compliance. By working together to follow these guidelines, we help protect our community’s views of the stars. Then take a moment to step outside, look up and enjoy Tucson’s beautiful night sky.

After new exterior painting, the paint can generally last anywhere from 6 to 12 years. Original painting variables include quality of the preparation work, how many coats were applied, how it was applied and the quality of paint. Other variables include exposure to sun (i.e., how much sun each side of the house receives), severity of temperatures from year to year, whether the paint has been patched over the years causing variations in wear and color and if darker colors arre used because they will fade much faster than lighter colors. SCOV guidelines specify Dunn Edwards colors, but not Dunn Edwards paint. Painters can and will use any paint they want, which is why some general contractors will recommend residents doing their due diligence in questioning what kind of paint, etc. Dunn Edwards (and other paint manufacturers) offer several different grades of exterior paint and the better the grade, the longer the paint will last. Using a contractor who is licensed and insured is also recommended.

Check with the State of AZ Registrar of Contractors at roc. az.gov. Signs that you need to paint: streaking, mottled look, different colors indicating patch painting, grey or pink cast coming through (which is the original stucco color showing through the paint).

The Library is hosting two author talks this month. The first is Becky Masterman, the award-winning author of the internationally bestselling Brigid Quinn thrillers. Becky is coming back to SCOV, Wednesday, April 8, 10 am-Noon, Auditorium, to share with us her new book If a Face Could Kill. In this book, the hunt for a neighbor’s killer reveals chilling secrets close to home. This is a must-read page turner and is the fifth book in her Brigid Quinn series. Tickets are available Wednesday, March 25, Library.

Our next author visiting this month is Christopher Valen.

He will be joining us Wednesday, April 22, 1-3 pm, Auditorium to present his latest book, Every Broken Thing where homicide detective John Santa returns to Colombia, but his vacation turns into a nightmare. Chris is an award-winning author of eleven police procedurals featuring Colombian-born St. Paul Homicide Detective John Santana. His books will largely appeal to fans of crime fiction with plots that are intricately crafted with intriguing characters offering unexpected twists and turns that will keep you entertained and guessing throughout his books. Ray Jerkins is retiring March 31. We would like to say thank you to him and for all he had done for the community, everyone he has helped with classes and those he has taught. Have a wonderful retirement.

Walking is a key component of physical activity for all ages and abilities, and a daily walk can be the perfect opportunity to get up from your chair and take in some fresh air. Walking by yourself is certainly relaxing, but sharing a stroll with a companion or friend can make it that much better. A study looking at group fitness showed that physical, mental and emotional quality of life improves when participants exercise together, potentially leading to a significant improvement in mood and well-being. You likely have plenty of options when it comes to securing a walking partner. Start with your immediate family or the people you see on a daily basis. If family members aren’t available, look to a colleague who shares a similar schedule as you, just make sure you take the proper precautions to ensure everyone’s safety. Pets are also great walking buddies; if you don’t have a dog, see if a neighbor or friend will let you borrow theirs.

As of the first week in March, our Ambassadors conducted approximately 115 scheduled tours, welcoming 204 prospective residents and guests. Each participant experienced a comprehensive introduction to the many outstanding amenities that Sun City Oro Valley has to offer, along with an overview of the vibrant lifestyle that makes our community so special.

Beyond simply showcasing facilities, our Ambassadors are focused on sharing the full SCOV experience: highlighting not only the physical amenities, but also the strong sense of community, active social calendar and wide variety of clubs, classes and interest groups available to residents.

Guests toured key areas such as recreational facilities, Fitness Center, The Views Restaurant, arts and crafts studios and gathering areas where neighbors connect and friendships flourish.

Overall, these tours continue to play an important role in helping prospective residents envision themselves as part of the SCOV community. The positive responses reflect not only the quality of our amenities, but also the welcoming spirit and vibrant lifestyle that defines Sun City Oro Valley.

There is a group of individuals here in SCOV who quietly do their work without much notice or fanfare. Their work goes on year-round, in the heat of our summers and the cooler days of the winter months. They are meticulous in detail and know every aspect of our current Development Standards and Master Declaration. They stay current with every change in those documents and other legal requirements pertaining to homes in an HOA. Without them, homes cannot legally close escrow and transfer ownership.

The group is the Architectural Inspection Group, better known as the AIG. Each year this group of seven or eight individuals conducts approximately 200 listing and escrow inspections as part of the closing on every home sold here in SCOV. After each inspection, they file a report with the Association for processing. They do courtesy inspections when requested by homeowners as well as over 100 re-inspections each year to confirm that violations found initially are being addressed by our new homeowners in our community.

These individuals volunteer their time and talent to ensure that SCOV remains a truly wonderful place to live. They deserve our thanks for the hours and commitment to that goal.

How can you get notifications of emergency situations including wildfires and flash floods? First, when the National Weather Service issues certain weather warnings, cell towers will broadcast the alert to all connected cell users.

Other applications for your phone are available. Weatherbug provides additional weather alerts including flash flood and lightning warnings. Watchduty provides alerts for nearby wildfires. You can also set other locations if you want to keep track of the area near a second home or vacation home.

CodeRedMobile is used by the Town of Oro Valley to send notices to town residents. If the affected area is smaller than the town, they can geofence the alerts so they send a notice to only the affected area.

Oro Valley’s Mayoral Candidates, Melanie Barrett and Mark Napier, have both agreed to an invitation from Government Affairs to debate their qualifications pending scheduling. Mark Napier served one term as Pima County Sheriff after winning the 2016 election.

Once the debate date is set, Government affairs will be soliciting SCOV members for debate questions. Your Long Range Planning Committee is discussing the scope and direction of the next resident survey planned for 2028. Creating questions that guide community decision-making is exciting and challenging.

Our most recent survey, published in April 2023, included 72 questions covering topics like demographics, amenity use, ownership status, how residents learned about SCOV and ideas for future amenities. The survey was completed by 1,859 residents (52%).

These responses represented 1,509 unique household addresses, or 60.7% of SCOV properties. Most respondents completed the survey in about 20 minutes.

Looking ahead to 2028, Artificial Intelligence will likely help us analyze data and craft even more effective questions while input from residents and the SCOV Board will shape the topics we explore.

After all, the future of SCOV belongs to all of us. Come join the conversation and help keep SCOV vibrant, welcoming and fun for years to come.

Format for location of events, spelled out: day, (Thursday) date, (March 5) time, (1 pm) place (DO/Ocotillo). Adhering to these guidelines saves a lot of editorial correction time.

Last month we had our annual Cure for Cancer event, and it was a huge success with 220 golfers. Thank you to all who participated and donated to the cause. We raised over $50,000 for the University of Arizona Kids for Steele Children’s Research Center.

All men’s and women’s leagues are wrapping up their main tournament schedule in April. The Chip & Putt events remaining are on Thursdays April 2, 16, and 30 concluding at the end of the month. You can play up to six people per group. The entry fee is $20 per person for golf, prizes and dinner on the terrace. If you want to improve your game, we have many teaching opportunities with our professional staff in group and private settings. We offer golf clinics every Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. throughout April, we also offer a couple more club-fitting days with Cleveland & Srixon, XIIO, through the end of the month.

The Grille @ The Turn will be open until April 24-25. As a reminder, the driving range closes every Thursday at 3:30 pm for a clean pick of all the range balls in the wash and desert areas.

April is the time of year when the peak golfing season is slowly ending, the temperatures are steadily rising and big changes begin to happen on the golf course. The golf clubs still have major events in the first couple weeks of April, so it is important to maintain turf conditions at a high level, but with the warmer temperatures and the chances of rain decreasing that becomes a difficult challenge.

The roughs are starting to green up as they come out of winter dormancy. As they begin to grow, the irrigation needs to be turned back on as well. Throughout most of the winter, the non-overseeded areas do not require irrigation but instead rely on the winter rains. This keeps the course drier and also saves on the water budget. Turning the irrigation back on leads to more maintenance to ensure the grass is getting the correct amount of water while trying to keep playing conditions from getting too wet.

April also sees the start of transitioning away from the overseeded winter ryegrass back to the underlying bermudagrass on the tees and fairways. This is a challenge to slowly remove the ryegrass while getting the bermudagrass to grow and maintain good playing conditions for the club events. This process is done slowly by lowering mowing heights, verti-cutting the turf canopy to allow sunlight down to the bermudagrass, aerification to alleviate compaction and allow oxygen to the roots and small applications of herbicides to slowly remove the ryegrass.

The following procedures ensure an enjoyable golf experience for all players: A good pace of play on a course that’s ready to play, divots filled, bunkers raked, greens repaired, regardless of having an early or late tee time.

Details are in the Golf Handbook. www. theviewsgolfclub. com Pace of Play: The standard is two hours for 9 holes and four hours for 18 holes. All players should keep up with the group in front and not delay players behind them. Your group will be alerted by the Player Assistant if you are out of position once, possibly, twice before being asked to skip a hole.

Golf carts: • No more than two golf carts per group on the course at any time. If there are more than two carts, they must remain on the cart path.

• No carts are permitted behind or within 30 yards of any green. Keep carts on the path around the tee area.

• No handicap-flagged carts permitted within 30 feet of the green around all par 4/par 5’s.

• On par 3’s, all carts, including handicap-flagged carts, must remain on the path.

• Use 90-degree cart path rule going directly to/from the cart path to your ball or use the blue gates. When using blue gates to enter/exit the fairway, drive directly to the cart path.

During play, park the cart in the fairway or cart path, never in the rough.

• Noncompliance will result in a warning, continued non compliance will result in a letter; more noncompliance will result in suspension of golf privileges (days/weeks/perma nent,) at the discretion of the Director of Golf.

Etiquette: • Play ready golf and be prepared when it’s your turn. If a player in your group is not ready to play, go ahead and play your shot, if you’re not in their way and it’s safe to do so.

• Replace fairway divots with the seasonal sand mixture.

• Rake bunkers. When finished, leave the head of the rake inside and handle outside the bunker, away from line of play.

There have been some very impressive matches with full results published next month.

Solheim Slicers and Hook- The first of three Solheim matches was played on March 3rd with the ers on March 3rd, 2026 following to be completed on March 6 and March 10. The teams chose the names Hookers and Slicers. Eleven teams competed against each other in two-person, best ball, low net score.

Slicers won the round 7 to 4. The next round which will be played as Alternate Shot with the final day played as Individual Match Play. It is a great tournament for all players to participate in with a party to celebrate.

We explored a display from the Tucson Garden Railway Society in March.

Each year the Society opens its displays to the public at no charge. Some of our members visited eight locations around the Tucson area. All displays, except the Gadsden Pacific, are outdoors and wonderful and detailed layouts of G scale train tracks. This display was in South Tucson and had Garden Train Layout several water features. It was a fun weekend. Join us at our twice monthly meetings. The first meeting is on the second Friday at Catalina Vista and the second meeting, called How Goes It, on the fourth Friday in the modeler’s room. Steve Restemayer used the ChatGPT app to help refine choices on the sculpture project shown in this picture on the right. He began by finding an inspirational image online as a starting place. Steve then gave GPT criteria/input to what he desired such as, “provide an eagle, with long tail extensions, bronze color with gold highlights on the wings, etc.”.

A rendering from GPT came back within 30 seconds which included a chat dialogue exchange with other considerations and questions. That information helped Steve develop the wire armature and informed him of his finished detailed work as seen in the picture.

Our group provides materials and instruction to those interested in learning the art of rug hooking. Articles for beginning hookers imply that hooking Carrie Wiley demonstrating rug hooking. is easy to learn. Learning to hook can be challenging for some. To begin, a learner holds the hook like a pencil and pushes it through a hole in the foundation materials. Holding the cut wool strips under the material with the other hand, the hooker must catch the strip and pull it up through the foundation material to form a loop. The wool stays in place through the tension of tight packed loops. The proper tension is needed to hold the loop in place which can be tricky for some.

In April, we will highlight the artistic side of woodworking. The photo shows a wooden vase designed and constructed by Mike Middleton. It is made entirely from the wood of various trees and turned on a lathe. The individual patterns are all hand crafted and glued together in sections which, when combined with other sections, form the individual layers that make 14 Inch Wooden Vase up the vase. Mike’s engineering background, combined with his skills in woodworking and precision design, are key to the art and beauty seen in the finished product. The vase is over 14 inches high and is turned in several stages which are glued together before final cleanup and finish. All colors and shades are natural and created by selecting the proper wood species.

Creative blocks can feel frustrating and stressful. Ironically, that stress often makes the block worse.

One strategy is to step away. Alfred Hitchcock would shift conversations to unrelated topics when scripts stalled, easing tension and allowing ideas to surface subconsciously.

Sun City Sunset Another approach is imposing creative constraints. Dr. Seuss wrote Green Eggs and Ham using only 50 words, producing a classic. Limiting your choices by shooting a different lens or subject can force you to notice new things. Creative blocks happen to everyone; the key is to not fight it, just take a break and change your focus.

Our next program is “Infrared; The Light We Cannot See” on April 8. The presenter will be Joe Webster. Our next competition theme is “Flowers” on April 22. Both events are at 6 pm in Catalina Vista; the public are invited to attend.

Bat biologist Debbie Buecher’s talk will explain the true natural history of bats contrasted against what people think about bats through Halloween and Hollywood. Halloween is when people think about bats, but often link them with witches, devils and other scary creatures. Hollywood uses bats to initiate fear in the storyline by associating them with danger. Despite bats being feared and misunderstood, they are intelligent, beneficial and gentle mammals. Most bats are major predators of nocturnal pest insects while others pollinate hundreds of fruit plant species that we love to eat.

Debbie’s talk will dispel myths and promote understanding of these nocturnal creatures. She will also bring her bat friend, Rosie, to meet us in person.

Aquatone is a water workout that incorporates a variety of rhythmic body movements. This aquatic exercise class enhances cardiovascular fitness and muscle endurance.

It includes warm-up, cool down, various swim strokes and strength exercises. We use buoys, boards, noodles, balls and a fitness band. Most of these items are available at the pool. Participants need to be able to do a basic swim stroke.

With the pool closed for the first part of April, we will continue holding chair exercise class in the Activity Center until the pool reopens. Once the pool reopens, Arthritis Club will meet three times a week at the AFC pool when the air temperature is 77 degrees or warmer.

Our club performs gentle exercises which target all muscles. They are used by several health organizations to increase strength and balance, mobility and flexibility.

Exercise is helpful in managing arthritis, fibromyalgia and replaced joints. Some new members have expressed surprise at how quickly the first sessions increased their ability to move. Others comment on improved stamina.

New members are always welcome. Our members are fun, accepting and welcoming. We frequently hear, “I came for the exercises and love all the friends I have made.”

Your first class is free. Yearly dues are $5. There is no fee per class. Hope to see you there.

To get the full benefits of Pilates, a person needs to be patient and, at first, take a little extra time when performing the exercises as they may be different from those you are used to doing. They are fun, interesting and challenging.

Pilates can even become addictive. It teaches proper balance, breathing, how to focus on your core (abdomen and back muscles) and movement control. This constant movement from one exercise to another results in developing more strength and stamina. Posture is improved. The spine lengthens and joint flexibility and mobility increase. The club has two experienced instructors who teach the mat classes and, if necessary, modify some of the moves for us. Spring is here and that is the best time to go birding almost anywhere.

Birds are singing and are in their breeding plumage. Trees are sometimes not completely leafed out, making the viewing easier and the sunny skies and nice temperatures ensure enjoyable times in the great outdoors.

Winter was good for us though; a rePhoto by Steve Holmes cent January trip to the Santa Cruz Flats, behind Picacho Peak, netted 45 species. But many of the ducks and other water birds that visit us in the winter have now departed for cooler climes, being replaced by a multitude of passerines (songbirds) that are approaching us from south of the border to breed here.

If you like playing racquet sports, you’ll love playing racquetball. Unlike tennis, pickleball and pop tennis, racquetball is played in a climate-controlled indoor court at the Fitness Center. Because it’s indoors, there are no cancellations due to wind, rain, cold or heat. We use small, stringed rackets to hit a rubber ball using all four walls and the ceiling. Games are Racquetballers in action 11 points and last about 15 minutes. No experience necessary. We will provide rackets, balls, safety goggles and lots of laughs and camaraderie. We successfully completed our move to the Copper Center and are enjoying more playing times for both Club members as well as for non-members. However, rumors have it that the monitors miss us and the shouts and laughter that used to permeate Catalina Vista, especially on Saturday mornings. While this initial move to the Copper Center is temporary, we look forward to having all five tables set up after our next move, we currently have three tables. While our Club playing schedule is likely to change frequently as we gain more members, the information in the header is our current one.
