A Good Time to Take Stock by Terry McFadden In the blink of an eye it seems another year is nearly gone. With the issues involving Covid, social distancing and masking, time has flown and we are all one year older. December is always a good time to take stock of where we are in life and all that we have to be thankful for. With all of the problems and unrest going on in so much of the world and also on a national scale, we are so lucky to be living here in our nice peaceful community where we have no problems of any substance. There is virtually no crime in our community, we have no vandalism to worry about, and we don’t even have any serious traffic problems to work around. Our Southern Arizona climate has to be just about the best that can be expected this time of the year and hey, we even have the lowest HOA dues of any community with our amenities in this part of Arizona. What more could we ask for? Perhaps we should use this time to give thanks for all of our blessings and especially for our good luck to find such a great place as SCOV to live. Many of us will be going away during the holiday season and that gives reason to pause and to be careful to keep ourselves safe during our travels. Holiday traffic is notoriously problematic and needs extra caution to ensure that we arrive back safe and sound. So drive carefully, celebrate responsibly and come home safe. As we celebrate the holiday season, whether it be a religious holiday or a secular one, the Board of Directors wishes you and yours a very merry Christmas, a happy Hanukah, a joyous Kwanza and a happy and prosperous New Year.

Continue Safe Practices Throughout the holiday season we are blessed with visitors from all around the world. Many of those guests include resident’s children and grandchildren. It is always nice to welcome our guests who really enjoy our temperate weather, our facilities and visiting with friends and family. May I take just a moment to encourage all to keep safe during this continued pandemic? We recognize as people come from around the world, or from next door, we are not familiar with their preferences, customs or thoughts as it relates to the pandemic and safety. I recommend following the CDC guidelines of wearing a mask when indoors, where you can’t maintain a six-foot social distance as you attend functions and, of course, when supporting The Views Restaurant as you enter and exit. Like many of you, I would like to think we are all safe in Sun City Oro Valley. However, we now see times when even those who have been vaccinated are sometimes getting this terrible virus. I plead with you to take every precaution you can to keep yourselves, your family, your friends and neighbors and even our staff safe. Our sacrifices for safety’s sake today will yield a bright and healthy future. I thank you for all you do to make this community so wonderful. It is a delight to work for you. Your staff and I express our gratitude.

s much as we all love Tucson’s mild weather, it can be challenging to get in the holiday spirit when it’s 80 degrees out and snow is but a midwest memory. Take heart, as there are many ways to enjoy the weather and still find joy in the season. Start by peeking inside some SCOV homes that are decorated for the holidays. Take in the Holiday Lights Committee’s home tour on Saturday, December 4. Tickets may still be available by contacting nashuachristThe Holiday Lights Committee has created exhibits mas@comcast.net. throughout SCOV. Photo is from last year. See page 9 for information. In the evening hours, be sure and enjoy the light displays that the committee has installed at SCOV facilities. Enjoy White Christmas, December 3-19, Park Place Mall, 5870 E. Broadway, a live musical performance based on the classic film. www.arts-express.org Near to home is the Oro Valley Festival of the Arts & Holiday Tree Lighting on December 4 and 5 at the Oro Valley Marketplace. TWISCOV (This Week in SCOV) The exact pronunciation of this acronym is debatable, “twizkav, This Week in SCOV, etc.,” but it is clear that TWISCOV is a valuable source of communication. The Big List is the list that receives the weekly TWISCOV emails. There are other lists of interest to select as well. Once the form is submitted, you are signed up and ready to receive the weekly newsletter, TWISCOV. We’ll leave it up to you to decide how to pronounce it.

Program/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 Happy Holidays The holidays bring more family and friends visiting the community. We are happy that the usual guest rules are back in place. Looking for things to do with guests? There are two sets of “corn hole” at Desert Oasis–you can set them up on the half basketball court. In addition to mini-golf, consider introducing your visitors to pickleball or POP tennis. Most visitors enjoy our pools and work on their tans to go home and show off our mild winters. I truly want to wish everyone a wonderful holiday season with hope that 2022 will be a safe and healthy year for all.

Community Services - Katy Mosier Architectural Coordinator, Katy Mosier scoroval@ciramail.com 520-917-8058 Remodeling Your Property? The process of renovation, whether inside or outside, often brings temporary distress to neighbors who experience such things as the daily traffic of delivery trucks, parking on the sidewalks by contractors, improperly stored building materials and discarded debris that blows into adjacent yards. The nuisance factor is amplified by lengthy timelines that stretch into months. What is expected of residents and their contractors? 1) Residents shall be responsible for the actions of their contractors. 2) A clean work site is important. See Development Standards Section 2.1.e 3) Contractors are encouraged to be respectful of the neighbors. Monitor parking of trucks, etc., to have the least effect on neighboring properties. 4) Noise: Refer to Town of Oro Valley Town Code 10-1-4, 6 for construction start/stop times. 5) Master Declaration 4.5 Nuisances; Construction Activities, Hazardous Activities, Lighting, provides the authority for enforcement of these policies. Before you hire a contractor, please refer to www.azroc. gov for information on hiring Arizona licensed and nonlicensed contractors. You may also refer to the Consumer Referral Vendor List on our SCOV website under Members/Member Services.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Footwear in the Gym What to wear: Any sort of athletic shoe (excluding soccer cleats, golf shoes, etc.) will do–whatever you find comfortable. If playing racquetball, you can get special court shoes, but otherwise a good all-around running or crosstrainer shoe will suffice for most activities in the gym. What not to wear: Sandals, flip-flops or street shoes. When using cardio equipment or in an area with lots of heavy objects being tossed about, you want your feet covered and at least somewhat protected. Please inform your guests about our footwear policies. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or concerns with the AFC. Hours of operation for the AFC and Desert Oasis are on page 2. Tuesday, December 14, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, December 15, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Republic Services scov@republicservices.com www.suncityorovalley.com/members/services/trash

Important reminder: Republic Services picks up between 6 AM and 6 PM on your designated trash day. You must have your trash and recycle bins out at 6 AM or you risk a missed pickup. SCOV has a dedicated customer service representative with Republic Services. Many of you are aware of the labor challenges the country is currently experiencing, and Republic Services highly encourages residents to email any service issues, rather than telephone, in order to receive the best service. Our representative can be reached at scov@ republicservices.com. This email is listed on the Republic magnet you received in your annual dues mailing. Visit our web page where you can find the following information: 1) Recycling: View a video and web page on what Republic takes in their recycling bins. Glass is accepted for recycling. 2) Holiday schedule: Check if you need to shift setting your bins out due to a holiday. 3) Report a problem: Missed pickup? Bin damaged? Click the REPORT A PROBLEM tab, fill out our form and Republic will receive a copy.

Architectural Review Kris Ahlstrand 510-693-5502 ARC@suncityorovalley.com Zoom meetings Second and Fourth Tue., 2 PM

A lot has happened over the past year. The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) has been busy reviewing home improvement submittals weekly, and based on homeowner submittal feedback, we have been updating SCOV’s Development Standards to make them current with the times and easier to understand. Possible changes, pending Board of Directors approval, pertain to adding colors to roll-down shade screens that complement your home and adding a couple of window colors that are now available from window manufacturers to accommodate your design needs. Approved privacy screening is planned to be expanded, with continued respect to your neighbors’ view loss. Resin storage bins in your back patio areas may be allowed for storing patio pillows and cushions. These containers must still be hidden from street view and your neighbor. No extra-large bins to store overflow goods from your home or garage are allowed. An Approved Tree List has been added, which gives a great variety of trees that will not grow over 25 feet. And we are exploring one of the most-asked questions, “Can I paint my front door a color not included with our current paint schemes?” These are just some of the changes we worked on in 2021 that the Board will review in the next month or two. The ARC is listening and wants to make changes pertinent to our changing times while maintaining architectural consistency as a priority.

Artisan Center Renovation Task Force Chair Tim Kelley tkelleyscov@gmail.com See SCOV calendar for meeting dates, time and location

The Artisan Center Renovation Task Force (ACRTF) may meet the first and third Tuesdays of the month, as needed. The SCOV website will have current meeting notices. The current practice is for vaccinated members to attend in person. Non-vaccinated members and all others may attend via Zoom. The SCOV website, (go to Members > Committees > ACRTF) provides the charter for the task force. The website also provides “A Discussion of the Existing and Future Facility Requirements for the Artisan Clubs of SCOV.” An informal working group comprised of representatives from each of the artisan clubs met over the winter of 2021 to research and write this discussion paper. The ACRTF is now building on the previous work and will identify and work with an architect to develop a comprehensive recommendation for the renovation of this 34-year-old Artisan Center facility.

Community Directory Chair Lisa Collins 812-344-4773 scov.community.directory@gmail.com www.scovaz.com/members/services/directory

February plans are to have at least two forums where questions will be asked of the candidates so you can get a feel for their understanding of and passion for SCOV. Recordings of these forums will also be available on our website. Finance-Budget Chair Tim Kelley tkelleyscov@gmail.com Quarterly Zoom meetings on Mondays. Check SCOV calendar for dates and times.

The Finance-Budget Committee (FBC) meetings are typically held quarterly. The current FBC practice is for vaccinated FBC members to attend in person. Non-vaccinated committee members and all others may attend via Zoom. At times, when necessary, the FBC will meet more frequently, e.g., budget preparation, audit results and when information is requested by the Board of Directors. Find meeting dates, times, location and information on the SCOV website. Current financial information is also available on the website.

The paper phone book is still with the printer, and the publisher does not know when they will be shipped. Watch “This Week in SCOV” for updates. Even though the paper phone book is updated just once per year, you can update your listing in our online directory at any time. The online version is updated monthly, thus always has the most current information. Do you need someone’s email address or unit number? Those are included only in the online directory, not in the book. To update your listing in the directory, the preferred method is to complete the online form “Change your directory listing.” Otherwise, you can fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center.

Gift Shop Co-Chairs Melanie Stinson 971-506-8655, Maxine Yunker 970-691-7990 Gift Shop 520-917-8051 Shop hours: Mon.-Fri., 10 AM-4 PM, Sat., 10 AM-1 PM www.suncityorovalley.com/gift-shop

Welcome to the holidays. Our tree is full of ornaments in addition to a second display at the entrance to the shop. Artists of the month are Jo Jo Wickberg, left, and Joan Kelley Wickberg and Joan Kelley. Jo loves art. After taking classes in various media, she decided to get back into making cards for sale. Jo says, “I’m now concentrating on pop-up cards. They’re fun to make. On opening the card, flowers may pop up, or maybe a big birthday cake or a large ‘Thanks.’” Another choice is making smaller cards with coordinating subject matter and putting three together to make one packet for sale. Photographer and potter, Joan Kelley, makes decorative and functional clay items as well as photographic greeting and note cards. Although photography has been second nature nearly her whole life, a love of pottery has taken over for the past 20 years, balancing mud play with clean digital imaging.

The Holiday Lights Committee has been busy all year gearing up for this season’s expanded light exhibit. Thanks to the Sun City Vistoso Community Foundation, the Association and private donors for helping make this year’s display an even more robust show. However, the project is not inexpensive. We rely on donations and volunteer hours to coordinate and make the decorations. This year there is a new fundraising effort to tour seven SCOV homes decorated beautifully for the holiday season. Homes will be open Saturday, December 4, with two touring opportunities: 9 AM-Noon or 1-4 PM. Tickets are $25 pp. Masks are required for the tour. For ticket availability, call Linda Bretz 603-459-4219 and check our new website for further details at www.SCOVLites.com. Come be inspired and enjoy getting into the holiday spirit.

Loan Room - Community Assistance Chair Gay Russell Third Thu., 3 PM, WC1 (currently not meeting) Loan Room hours: Tue., Thu., 8-9 AM www.suncityorovalley.com/members/services/loan-room/

The Loan Room, located at the end of the Cart Barn, is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM. The Loan Room is a free service to all SCOV residents. Walk-ins are always welcome to borrow equipment or make reservations for a future date on the website. We have many medical items, usually for a two-month loan, including wheelchairs, walkers, shower seats, commodes, toilet risers and miscellaneous items. We also have tables, chairs, rollaway beds, mattresses, etc., for two-week loans. Our children’s items include car seats, strollers, Pack ‘n Plays, cots and some toys. Please come and look around or visit our website to view what we have available. Please make reservations for any non-emergency item needed around holidays as these can be limited in number. Thank you to all who answered our call for volunteers. You are greatly appreciated.

Special Note from the Community Assistance Committee (CAC) Some good things never change. The CAC Loan Room has been assisting residents with their medical equipment needs and equipment for visits from grandchildren, family and friends for over 30 years. Other changes may cause some disruption and yet those changes end up enhancing our lives. The renovation of the Activity Center comes to mind. While the Loan Room will continue to serve residents, this renovation will result in the cancellation of the 2022 Annual CAC Pancake Breakfast and also, temporarily, the closing of the aluminum can collection program. There is just no other facility in the area that can handle the needs of the pancake breakfast and the can collections. The Loan Room financially depends on the annual pancake breakfast proceeds, the revenue from the can collection program and individual donations. Cancelling these events, even temporarily, is not desirable; however, it is necessary. We look forward to resuming both activities. We will, however, continue to make the Loan Room and its equipment available. Anyone wishing to make a cash or check donation is welcome to drop it off at the Loan Room during normal hours on Tuesday or Thursday between 8 and 9 AM. Gay Russell CAC Chair

Long Range Planning Chair Sharon Kennedy kennesk@comcast.net Second and Fourth Wed., 10 AM, on Zoom

The purpose of our committee is to develop and recommend to the Board a rolling 5 to 10-year plan to maintain and further enhance the quality of life for current residents, while ensuring SCOV remains competitive in attracting active, involved people to our community. Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 ‘Tis the Season As the end of 2021 approaches, the Neighborhood Pride Committee wishes you a most happy holiday season. Seventeen years have passed since our committee was formed, and our community looks absolutely beautiful, so take time to look around. As a community, we should feel proud of the way we look, not only to neighbors and ourselves, but also to those who visit with the thought of purchasing and moving here. We sincerely thank you for your cooperation in helping to make SCOV such a wonderful place to live. Enjoy the holidays, your families, your friends and neighbors, and especially our beautiful community. ‘Tis the season, and the Neighborhood Pride Committee hopes you have a joyous one and a happy New Year.

December is the month we spread good cheer. We celebrate Hanukkah and Christmas with our families. I know many of us are looking forward to being with family this year, especially after missing our time together last year. The joy of the holidays can be infectious, but don’t forget to share it with your friends and neighbors as well. So many volunteers serve our community. Think of them this holiday season and spread good cheer by giving an extra smile, a hug when possible, or just do something extra special for them. I’m thinking of the many Posse volunteers who have served, continue to serve, and will join us in the future. Thank you to all. Happy Hanukkah and Merry Christmas. Stay safe and be well.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063

December is typically the time of year the temperature falls low enough to get frost on the grass. When the atmospheric temperatures get that low, the soil temperatures begin to drop, which is the trigger for Bermuda grass to go into dormancy and turn brown. Mid-December is historically the time when the golf course roughs and perimeters finally lose their green color. People often confuse the brown grass as being dead, but it is actually in a dormant state. That means the turf is basically sleeping and still requires adequate moisture throughout the winter months. This year, with the fairways not overseeded, they will go dormant with the roughs. To prevent the entire golf course from being brown, the fairways and greens are already being painted green with a turf specific pigment. This pigment needs to be applied while the turf is still green, so the color can be built up over time and look more natural as the other areas of the golf course turn brown. This pigment also includes soil additives and fertilizers to supply the turf with necessary nutrients while being dormant. This year, frost will not be as big of a problem. The driving range tee and tees that were overseeded are the only areas that will be impacted by frost. Golf carts and foot traffic will not harm dormant turf like they do overseeded turf. The tees are usually the first areas where frost melts, so the delays should be shorter this winter.

Golf Advisory Chair Eileen Buskirk 206-450-6146 SCOVgolfadvisory@gmail.com Sep.-May, first Wed., 2 PM, WC3 Bermuda grass is now dormant. Painting is underway on both fairways and greens. Please use the email above to inform the advisory committee of your thoughts about course conditions. Remember, golfers need to follow the signage in place to control cart traffic and minimize wear Please keep all four tires on the cart path when by and tear. Mike the tees and greens and his crew are working to cut back vegetation that has been blocking views of the fairway from the tees. Hopefully, this is cutting down on errant golf shots and improving experiences. There’s also been more time dedicated to the bunkers. While sand is in short supply (they’re not making as much now) the crew is grooming them more often and working to make the sand more playable. Since the temperatures have dropped, the greens are being treated with the surfactants and hand watering. This will decrease the wet areas on the green surrounds.

Now is a good time to appreciate the beauty of our golf course. Please remember to drive golf carts in designated areas. Divots in the fairways should be filled with sand and divots in the tee boxes should be filled with seed mixture. A good habit is to repair your divot and another close by if needed. The Views Golf Course etiquette stipulates that players use only designated restrooms located on the course. Thank you all who donated stuffed animals and soft toys to the “Kuddles for Kids” collection that was sponsored by Seniors for Kids last month. We know that the donations will comfort and support children who are in difficult situations. Just being able to hug is a comfort when feeling alone. Seniors for Kids would like to invite all of SCOV to come to WC3 Thursday, December 2, 9 AM, to view the toys, quilts, pillowcases, hats, scarves and so many things that have been created and collected to distribute to the children we serve. At 10 AM, all the items will be boxed, and the sleighs will start on their journeys to Banner Children’s Hospital, AVIVA, TriCommunity Food Bank, Three Points Clinic and Family First. If helping children in need would get your creative juices flowing, stop by the Artisan Rooms and see where your skills might help Seniors for Kids provide cheer to children.

Can you imagine not being able to provide your children with pajamas or unable to afford crib sheets for your baby’s crib? How about sending your child out on cold mornings without something to cover their heads? We work hard in Casa Amigas to help provide these needed items to several community organizations in the Tucson area. We can always use more help with sewing and serging but also with donations of fabric and yarn. We sew pajama bottoms, make crib sheets out of donated used sheets, and knit/crochet hats and headbands. In addition, our quilters donate beautiful quilts for all ages. If you want to know more about what we do and if you can help, come by the Sewing Room in the Artisian Center on Monday and Thursday mornings.

Cheer Bears

Pat Norton 480-993-8762 panpan9803@yahoo.com Wed., 1-3 PM, Artisan Center/Sewing

We are still embroidering faces, sewing bodies, stuffing them with love and filling the shelves for the next set to march out to new families. Nothing has really stopped us this year. Life is good and spirits are up. We are looking forward to joy with excitement. We are sending our bears to their new homes this month with toy distributions in full swing. Many children need extra comfort in these trying times, so we will continue adding new bears to be sent out in the year to come. Please come and join our cheery group. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all. If, in your sorting and cleaning out, you find you have some polyester fiberfill, we are in need of it to plump up the tummies of the bears. Donations are always accepted. Machine Embroidery

Welcome back to those who have been gone during the summer months. I have a feel-good project for you. Why not join us Tuesday afternoons for cutting up fabric to make those cute beds for animals at the Humane Society? The time goes by faster when there are more of you working together. Some fabrics are wild, but I say the dogs won’t know the difference. If you have some larger pieces of fabric to make the actual pillow cases, please contact me. Quilters

Carol Guibert 520-404-1462 Second and Fourth Tue., 1 PM, Desert Oasis/Ocotillo

Our final meeting of the year will be Tuesday, December 14, 1 PM, Desert Oasis. There will be a quilters’ white elephant exchange (something we had to buy but still haven’t used), followed by cookie and tea refreshments. Our greatest achievement this past month has been the purchase of a new quilt machine, Simply Sixteen Coronet model, for the Sewing Room. Training will be held to familiarize everyone with the machine, and sign-ups for this will be posted.

As you can see, she used a picture as an inspiration for her hooking project, that she is giving as a gift. Our group started as Tapestry/Rug Hooking; we can provide education/training and materials for those interested in learning to hook. At the beginning of the year, our group expanded to include all fiber arts. We welcome anyone with other fiber art interests and expertise. Recently, Fiber Arts Tucson held their annual show featuring numerous illustrations and demonstrations on the various forms of art using fiber. One piece of art that piqued my interest was crocheted using fiber and paper as the yarn.

Although Alfred Lord Tennyson published this seasonal poem in 1850, much of it is relevant still today. His poetry inspires even as it chides with lessons we can surely take to heart. Selected excerpts from “Ring Out, Wild Bells”: “Ring out the old, ring in the new, / Ring, happy bells, across the snow: /
The year is going, let him go; / Ring out the false, ring in the true… Ring out the grief that saps the mind / For those that here we see no more; /
Ring out the feud of rich and poor, / Ring in redress to all mankind. Ring out a slowly dying cause, / And ancient forms of party strife;
Ring in the nobler modes of life, / With sweeter manners, purer laws… Ring out false pride in place and blood, / The civic slander and the spite;
Ring in the love of truth and right, / Ring in the common love of good…” Join us.

Happy holidays. Holidays can be a joyful and stressful time for not only us, but for your pets. If you travel to visit friends and family, be sure to make proper accomodations for your pet, whether it be having a pet sitter while you are gone or making proper arrangments when traveling with your dog. If you are hosting family and friends, the additional company and change of routines could create anxiety for pets. Try to stay as close to your regular schedule as possible. Provide your pet with extra playtime or walks to help burn off some energy before guests arrive.

December will be fun-packed for the Garden Club. Wear your holiday attire and be prepared to be entertained by the SCOV Kactus Krooners. Our meeting this month is the first Saturday, so mark your calendars for Saturday, December 4, 2-4 PM, Catalina Vista. Bring a wrapped gift to exchange, garden related items such as cuttings, tools, handmade objects, not to exceed $10. Be creative. The Pima County Extension Office has the following recommendations for all you who have poinsettias. Keep poinsettias healthy by locating them away from drafts and direct sunlight. They prefer bright, indirect light during the day and a cool location at night. Keep the soil evenly moist, as overor under-watering will cause the leaves to yellow and drop off. Fertilize monthly with a water-soluble houseplant fertilizer. After all danger of frost is over, poinsettias can be planted outside in a shady location.

Havurah Pres. Barbara Hamm 928-210-4735 www.havurahscov.org

Havurah continues to wish the SCOV community a Happy Hanukah, which ends the evening of December 6. Hope you had an opportunity to see our holiday exhibit in the Catalina Vista lobby. At our general meeting on December 20, 7 PM, Catalina Vista, UArizona graduate student Kayla Telicki will talk about her heritage trip to Poland several years ago. Our Mizvah Magic campaign, coordinated through the Jewish Federation, was a huge success. Happy holidays. The SCOV Pilates Club offers group mat classes at the AFC Mondays, 3-4 PM, and Thursdays, 1:30-2:30 PM. Each class participant is striving to increase their core strength. Core muscles are the deep abdominal and back muscles that help you stabilize your pelvis and spine. The Pilates exercises are simple, and each class begins with warm-up exercises, stretching and deep breathing. The instructors oversee us at all times. They modify the most strenuous exercises for anyone with limitations. These classes result in benefits that can’t be beat: better balance (fewer falls), more flexibility (joints move again), increased muscle tone (you’re stronger) and more energy and wellbeing. The cost is $8 cash per class, and 2022 annual club dues in January will be $20 pp. Call Mary with any questions.

The brain is an amazing thing and well protected in the skull. There are three parts: the paired cerebral hemisphere, the cerebellum, and the brain stem. The cerebral hemisphere is responsible for controlling higher functions such as memory and intelligence. Some people can do the New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle and others not so much. Researchers have discovered that puzzles and word games can keep minds sharp and aid in recovery after a brain injury or stroke, or delay the onset of dementia. The power of words is amazing. Some words are happy words, some convey ideas and some words can be informative. Words can convey happiness, sadness, melancholy or love. Scrabble is a game of words. Anyone can play; in Scrabble you do not need a large vocabulary or to be super smart. The Scrabble Club has the latest editions of the Official Scrabble Dictionary (and they are used a lot). The Scrabble Club welcomes everyone who wants to socialize with new people and/or just enjoy exercising your mind to stay sharp. Aside from the rides, our members enjoy our very useful website, including a searchable member directory, club classifieds, online ride schedule, cycling resources and more. We offer several hundred scheduled rides year-round, among four different ride subgroups, from 20-60+ miles, to cafe destinations within Tucson and nearby towns, utilizing both pathways and roadways. Occasional away rides are offered as well. Our cafe stops offer coffee and conversation, greatly enjoyed by our members. The club has e-bike, mountain biking, and Women on Wheels subgroups. There’s also our monthly club newsletter emai. All schedules can be found within the excellent member area of our website. The Cooper’s hawk is probably the most common of the three hawks most often seen in SCOV. It is in a family of mediumsized hawks with long tails. Its size and long tail make it very maneuSteve Holmes photo verable and adept at grabbing smaller birds and mammals. Fairly common in most of the states, it is quite often seen stalking bird feeders looking for a snack. We are a 90+ member, activity-oriented group and all SCOV residents are invited to join us on our field trips to learn more about the birds here in Arizona. Below is a list of upcoming bird outings. Vistoso Helpful Hands Dispatcher 520-447-0077 Barb McNeill bjmac68@gmail.com

Vistoso Helpful Hands (VHH) is an all-volunteer organization, providing year-round short-term assistance to SCOV residents. We began 25 years ago, following a Sun City resident emergency home visit by Golder Ranch Fire Department (GRFD). Sun City Vistoso leaders and the HOA activity director started hearing of other resident’s needs. Vistoso Helpful Hands was born. GRFD provided a pager to receive calls. In 2001, VHH sought advisory committee status with the Sun City Vistoso Board and were turned down, citing potential liability issues. We have successfully operated as a partnered organization with SCOV ever since. The SCVC Foundation provides a small grant to pay for our newer technology cell phone. Call 520-447-0077 to reach a dispatcher for volunteer assistance or for paid-services referrals.
