From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

The Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer —Not by Chris Ludwig Well, at least the song got two out of three right. As summer continues its march across our calendars and many residents have left for cooler weather, one might think everything here in SCOV has come to a halt. Au contraire! The following are just a few of the committees that are hard at work to make Sun City a great place to live. • Activity Center Renovation (ACR) – Committee members and staff are moving right along preparing for renovation. Updates are provided frequently in “This Week In SCOV” and on the website under Member Services and Hot Topics. You can check out the progress there. • Ambassadors – These volunteers continue to give tours for visitors, renters and potential residents. For the months of May, June and July, they have led 53 tours. • Architecture Inspection Group (AIG), formerly ACT – The AIG inspects every home before it is sold, either at time of listing or during the escrow period. Twenty-one inspections were conducted in the month of June alone. • Architectural Review Committee (ARC) – During the summer months, the ARC and staff conduct the annual Development Standards review/update. They meet the second and fourth Tuesday of every month and have reviewed 85 submittals for June and July. • Artisan Center Renovation Task Force (ACRTF) – The committee began meeting this summer, and information is posted on the website under Committees. Their “Discussion of the Existing and Future Facility Requirements for the Artisan Clubs of SCOV” is well worth your time to read. • Finance-Budget – This committee meets quarterly with our staff through the summer months. The annual audit by an independent CPA firm has begun and will be completed by October. • Loan Room – The Loan Room is open all summer long on Tuesday and Thursday mornings for two hours. In case you are not aware, this committee may be operating the only similar loan program in Southern Arizona and perhaps the entire state.

• Properties – The committee meets every month during the summer. They just completed a card-entry access study for SCOV facilities. Normal solar system monitoring and facilities inspections are ongoing. • Tipster – Last but certainly not least, tireless volunteers and staff bring the monthly Tipster to us in paper form and online. The Tipster Committee is dedicated to presenting pertinent, timely and valuable information for all SCOV residents and keeping the publication’s quality high. If any of these committees sparked an interest or desire to learn more, check out the Tipster for contact information and get involved. If you know someone on a committee or staff person, be sure to thank them for being crazy this summer.

Protecting SCOV Assets n June 24 of this year, there was a partial O collapse of the Champlain Towers South building at Surfside, Florida. This has me thinking that it would be a good idea to share with you the precautions we have in place to protect the assets of our community. Every three years, we have an Asset Reserve Study performed by an independent professional company. The study shows all of our assets valued at over $1,000, the asset’s anticipated useful life and how much life is expected before the asset needs replacement or repair. This study shows the anticipated amount of repair for each year for a thirty-year span of time. Our Facilities Department is led by Ken Sandrock. Regular preventative maintenance is performed on all facilities including, but not limited to checking/cleaning roof drains, air conditioner maintenance and repairing plumbing/water leaks and pools. Safety hazards are immediately addressed, as are items identified by the SCOV Properties Committee. The Properties Committee does an excellent job of inspecting our facilities and the Chalk Creek Wash. They identify areas of concern and pass those along to Administration to be resolved by the Facilities Department. This committee performs inspections twice a year. Their next inspection will be in September. Our insurance provider comes annually to view possible risks. Any of their recommendations are promptly addressed. In addition to SCOV buildings and common areas, they also review our risks in regard to vehicles, employees and our businesses. I guess the long story shorter is that we are doing our best to keep the Association protected. From physical facilities to business to liability from accidents, SCOV is a quality place in so many ways.

Have You Signed Up for CodeRED? There are instances when the 911 system goes down. The service to keep you informed in these types of situations is provided by the Town of Oro Valley. It’s called CodeRED. I’ve borrowed, with permission, an article from the Town that explains the system and how to sign up for it. CodeRED is a free emergency notification service provided to all residents within Oro Valley that will notify you of emergency information through phone calls, text messages, emails and social media. The system will be used to keep you informed of local events that may immediately impact your safety. As a local resident, you are encouraged to take action and register your cell phone for this service and verify your home location during the enrollment process, so you will receive notifications that directly impact your home or business. To learn more or register, visit the Town’s web page www.orovalleyaz.gov and type CodeRED in the search bar. Select the Register for CodeRED page for complete details and step-by-step instructions.

Controller - Randy Trenary rtrenary@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8060 The fiscal year for the Association ended June 30, 2021. As in the past, the financial statement for June is not included in the August Tipster due to time constraints for completion of year-end procedures. Financial statements can be found on our website www.scovaz.com and in our SCOV Library. An audit will be conducted in September, and the complete audited financials will be available on the website and in the SCOV Library before October 31, as mandated by the Bylaws. A copy will also be available in the Administration offices. Money Matters will return with the September issue of the Tipster. Questions? Email rtrenary@suncityorovalley.com or call 520-917-8060.

Program/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 Summer and Renovation Weather always needs to be considered for outdoor events and August can be very hot. While the Activity Center undergoes renovations, we will be looking for entertainment alternatives for you to enjoy. News and updates will be announced in “This Week In SCOV,” distributed on Thursdays.

Community Services - Katy Mosier scoroval@ciramail.com 520-917-8058 Misconceptions about Painting Many of us are examining our exterior paint conditions and questions come to mind: Q. When new paint colors are introduced, such as in March 2015, must you paint your house right away? A. You must paint your house only when the house needs painting, not when new colors are approved. But at that time, you must use the colors from the current approved color palette. Q. Can you repaint your house in the same colors that exist on your house currently?

Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, August 2021

A. You must use colors from the most current SCOV approved schemes unless you are doing a minimal amount of touch-up such as after a repair. Maintenance painting of houses, using the previously approved colors is allowed, provided that it represents a minor portion of the total surface area of the house, not to exceed one side of the house. Q. Can you mix colors from one palette with colors of another palette? After all, they are all approved. A. Currently the colors have been approved within 23 separate schemes. Each scheme has its own body, trim and optional door colors. Mixing one scheme with another is not allowed. Q. Must I only use Dunn Edwards paint? A. You can use another paint company to mix the Dunn Edwards colors as long as they match the Dunn Edwards colors perfectly. Q. Is it permissable to choose a color scheme that my next door neighbor used? A. Currently, there is nothing in our documents that prohibits using the same colors next to one another. Q. Do I need HOA approval to paint my house as long as I use the right colors? A. You do need to fill out and turn in a SCOV Paint Submittal Form found on our website at Members > Member Services > For Your House > Start a Paint Submittal. Beside the form, you will see other information on paint colors. This way, your chosen paint colors are on file for future reference, and they will be verified as correct so no costly mistake is made.

SCOV Library - Kate Cusumano www.suncityorovalley.com/amenities-facilities/library Online catalog: https://evolveopac.infovisionsoftware.com/suncityorovalley kcusumano@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8083

After nearly eight wonderful years as SCOV Librarian, it is time for me to enjoy the retired life. It has been an ideal job for me, working in a room full of books, thrilled to be the one selecting new books and movies to add to our collection. It

5

was exciting to lead the Library into the 21st century, as we moved from manual checkouts using pencil, 3x5 inch cards and a date stamp, to a computerized system with an online database. I launched an author series with live author events featuring both local and bestselling authors of books from historical fiction and mystery, to Arizona food, wine and history. Twelve authors appeared in Sun City in the 12 months before the pandemic shut us down, making SCOV one of the most active literary venues in the Tucson area, which attracted attention from agents scheduling authors for book tours. In the last year, I adapted to hosting author events on Zoom, another innovation for the Library. During my tenure, the Friends of the Library began offering book and movie reviews twice a year. Three of these Great Reads and Great Views events were held on Zoom or by online video link, so residents could attend remotely. Absolutely terrific volunteers and a talented Friends of the Library board assisted me in all of this and made it fun to come to work each day. But one of the greatest joys of my job was interacting with you, our fantastic Library patrons, and I will miss that immeasurably. Thank you so much for your amazing support over the years, and I’ll see you around the campus.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 What Is the Point of Taking a Shower First? There are several reasons why you should take a shower before entering a pool. One is that it removes contaminates from your body. Unless you just stepped out of the shower, there is a good chance that your body will have substances on it that will contaminate a pool. These include sweat, soap, perfume, shampoo and deodorant. A simple shower with water only can wash these substances from your body, so they don’t get into the pool water when you go for a swim. This will help the pool remain cleaner for a much longer time. The more contaminated the water becomes because of what you introduce, the harder the pool has to work to be sure it is clean. More chlorine has to be added to be sure the water is clean and safe and the pool’s pumps and filters will have to work hard to remove these contaminates in the water. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis hours of operation are on page 2. Tuesday, August 10, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, August 11, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Republic Services scov@republicservices.com www.suncityorovalley.com/members/services/trash

SCOV has a dedicated customer service representative with Republic Services. Many of you are aware of the labor challenges the country is currently experiencing, and Republic Services highly encourages residents to email any service issues rather than telephone, in order to receive the best service. Our representative can be reached at scov@ republicservices.com. This email is listed on the Republic magnet you received in your annual dues mailing.

Association Committees Active Health Chair Rita Menet 920-659-1428 rita.menet@gmail.com Next meeting Mon., Nov. 8, 3 PM, WC1

Active Health Committee presentations will resume in the fall when we expect to be able to meet in person. Look forward to dynamic speakers who will discuss what can be done to maintain and improve our health and longevity. Suggestions are welcomed on speakers who will discuss active lifestyle and healthy lifespan.

Aquatic Fitness Center Advisory Cliff Miller Architectural Review Kris Ahlstrand 510-693-5502 ARC@suncityorovalley.com Zoom meetings Second and Fourth Tue., 2 PM

The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) continues to remain extremely busy during these hot summer months with a minimum of 15 submittals to review at each of our Zoom meetings. It is incumbent upon residents to submit complete applications in order to receive a speedy review and approval of their project. One way to ensure a complete application and a project that meets the Development Standards for a Permanent Improvement is to have a pre-submittal meeting with ARC representatives. While this takes committee members’ time, it will save time in the long run, and we have found that it saves residents’ money. Before you begin preparing your application on the SCOV website, take the time to read all the directions, especially the specific items that must be included with your submittal. Use the drop-down menus: Members > Members Services > For Your Home > Read More > Start Submittal. The ARC members devote many hours year-round reviewing projects and discussing them in Zoom meetings held every second and fourth Tuesday at 2 PM. We encourage anyone who is planning a project, or just interested, to join us online. The link to our meetings can be found at Members > Committees > Architectural Review > Read More > Join ARC’s Zoom Meeting.

The Artisan Center Renovation Task Force (ACRTF) may meet the first and third Tuesdays of the month as needed. The SCOV website will have current meeting notices. The SCOV website (Members > Committees > ACRTF) provides the Charter for the task force. The website also provides “A Discussion of the Existing and Future Facility

The ACRTF is now building on the previous work and will identify and work with an architect to develop a comprehensive recommendation for the renovation of this 34-year-old Artisan Center facility.

Community Directory Chair Lisa Collins 812-344-4773 scov.community.directory@gmail.com www.scovaz.com/members/services/directory

While the paper phone book is updated just once a year, the online directory is updated monthly. Email addresses are included online only, not in the book. You can even access the directory on your smart phone, which means you have a community directory in your pocket. The directory is located in the nonpublic area of our website, so you need to log in to access it. Scroll down to the actual listings. There you will find the directory’s incremental search box, which will display results as you type. To see additional columns, such as hometowns and emails, use the horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of the listings or swipe left and right on your touchscreen.

To update your listing in the directory, the preferred method is to complete the online form “To change your directory listing….” Otherwise, you can fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center.

Consumer Referral - Vendor List Susanna Moran scovconsumerservices@gmail.com

The Vendor List is on the SCOV website. After logging in, go to www.suncityorovalley.com/members/services/vendor_ consumer-referral. The Vendor List may also be viewed at the monitor’s desk in the Activity Center during business hours. Please check the Vendor List often, as changes are made frequently. Vendors should email Susanna Moran to inquire about applying to be on the Vendor List.

Finance-Budget Chair Tim Kelley 734-645-8199 tkelleyscov@gmail.com Quarterly Zoom meetings on Mondays. Check SCOV calendar for dates and times.

The Finance-Budget Committee (FBC) will meet Monday, August 2, to review the unaudited financial results for the 2020-2021 fiscal year. These results will be audited by an outside independent firm with the results of the audit reported in October. Controller Randy Trenary will be presenting the annual FBC member orientation at this meeting. This is an excellent opportunity for residents to listen in and learn about the

budgeting process and financial reporting for our community. This summer the periodic Asset Reserve Schedule and Fund study will be completed by an outside firm. The results of this study will be available in the fall. SCOV financial information is always available on the Members area of the SCOV website. FBC meetings and “Quarterly Financial Conversations with Residents” are held quarterly. Find meeting information, times, location and dates on the website.

Food and Beverage Chair Wendy Hughes First Mon., 2-3 PM via Zoom

Monsoon weather is here. The Views Restaurant is planning entertainment for both Friday and Saturday nights. During the monsoon season, the entertainment will be held indoors. We’re still experiencing a wait staff shortage, so be patient when ordering food and drinks. The folks are doing their best to provide you with prompt service. If you know anyone looking for a job in the restaurant business, have them visit our restaurant and pick up an application.

people seem to leap off the cave wall, and are portrayed with incredible detail.” She offers prints and giclée of her original acrylic paintings. Joining the Clay Club, Lorraine began throwing on the wheel. She says, “I researched how to fire my clay to include horsehair. The hair is added to a very hot pot and creates black squiggles as it burns. Saggar fired pots are created by coating the pots with salts, oxides and organic materials. The pot is wrapped in aluminum foil and fired in the kiln to a high temperature.”

Holiday Lights Chair Linda Bretz 603 459-4219 lindaebretz1@gmail.com

The Holiday Lights Committee is nearly done making lots of new flowers for this year’s display. We just ordered icicle lights for the Welcome Center for this year, thanks to a grant from the SCOV Foundation. We are still looking for homes for this year’s brand new fundraiser–the Holiday House Tour. We would love to add homes beautifully decorated inside for Hanukkah as well as Christmas. This will be on the 1st Saturday of December. If you or someone you know fits this category, please contact Linda Bretz at nashuachristmas@ comcast.net or 603-459-4219 and more details will be provided. Can’t wait for the cooler weather.

Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 It’s Been a Hot Summer It’s been really hot, but the rains came along with wind, and we thank those in our community who kept a watchful eye out for their neighbors and informed them of any storm damage. If you are unable to reach your neighbor, call Administration to see if they have contact information on file. With so many of our neighbors away at this time of the year, we need to be especially aware of our surroundings. With our monsoon season, pesky weeds seem to appear overnight. Remove them as soon as possible, and try to make every effort to stay ahead of the weeds in your yard for the next few weeks. Is there standing water in your yard? It’s important to drain ponds and/or fountains in yards to eliminate standing water where mosquitoes can breed. Other items such as buckets, empty flowerpots and other containers can also collect rain, so be sure they are not holding standing water. Thank you for continuing to take pride in your property and our community even in our extremely hot summer months.

Posse Chair Linda Simōn 520-789-7169 posse@5LP.com First Tue., 3 PM, Desert Oasis (no meetings until further notice) www.scovaz.com/committees/posse/ (must be logged in first)

We are planning to begin the Posse in October. If you are not a member of the Posse, please consider joining. We need your help. In order to join, sign on to the SCOV website: Members > Committees > Posse > Safe DrivingPosse Members Only. Watch the presentation. Once done, take the test (it’s easy). Print out your test and take it to the Administration office along with a copy of your auto insurance and your driver’s license. When you have completed everything, call Linda Simōn, 520-789-7169, and she will get you assigned to a squad. We only ask for a commitment of six hours a year (two three-hour patrols), and you’ll be doing your community a service. In the meantime, be healthy, stay safe and continue watching out for your neighbors.

Properties Chair Rich Oaks richoaks114@gmail.com Third Thu., 9 AM, via Zoom

The mission of the Properties Committee is to make recommendations to the Board of Directors and the staff regarding the condition of and improvements to SCOV facilities. Ongoing activities include inspections of SCOV buildings and facilities, inspection of Chalk Creek and monitoring of the Sun City solar systems. Intermittent activities include utility usage studies and projects requested by the Board, the staff or as deemed appropriate by the committee. Our meetings in June and July have been in person and via Zoom. We will not meet in August, but will resume our meetings in September. Please see the calendar on the SCOV website for scheduled meeting dates, times and meeting format.

Golfing experience that provides professional and friendly service, mountain views and excellent conditions.

Director of Golf - Rick Price rprice@theviewsgolfclub.com 520-917-8086

The course conditions are coming along quite well. The short game area has been opened and we aerified the greens the last week of July. This means overseeding is right around the corner, with the golf course scheduled to close September 20-October 10. It will be cart path only for a couple of weeks after opening. The Pro Shop will be open with limited hours during overseeding, and the driving range will be open. This month we host the American Legion annual tournament on Saturday, August 21. It will be a 7:30 AM shotgun using the entire course for the morning. If you are interested in supporting or playing in the event, you can go to their Facebook page www.facebook.com/OVAmericanLegionPost132. During the inclement weather of the monsoon season, we want to remind you to be safe and use your best judgment while playing golf. Use the following suggestions to keep safe when heading out on the course during this time. Check the forecast, verify it often, and download a reliable radar app. If you hear thunder or see lightning, we recommend leaving the course or seek shelter immediately if you are not able to get off the golf course in a timely manner. If you have been thinking about improving your game, we invite you to attend one of our weekly clinics on Tuesdays or Wednesdays or take a private lesson for further help with your full swing and short game. Call the Pro Shop at 520825-3110.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063

During the months of June and July, a lot of effort was put into the golf course to promote growth of Bermuda grass in fairways, tees and greens. The maintenance staff aerified, topdressed and verticut all these areas. The benefits are realized during the months of July, August and September. The monsoons bring a higher level of humidity and occasional rain that really encourages the Bermuda grass to begin growing rapidy. The irrigation water is also reduced, which will allow the playing conditions to improve. All of the frustrations in June from the course being thin with some wet areas will be reduced, and the golf course will be in much better condition for the rest of the summer. One disadvantage of the increased humidity and rain during the monsoon is that the Bermuda grass in the roughs, fairways and now the new greens will begin to grow faster than it can be mowed. This results in an increase of grass

Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, August 2021

clippings and scalping that causes the grass to turn a yellow or orange color because it is getting mowed too low on the plant. To slow this surge of growth, a plant growth regulator will be sprayed during the months of high growth, and increased verticutting and topdressing will thin the grass canopy. This keeps the growth to a minimum, which reduces the messes in the roughs and prevents scalping on the fairways and greens, while also keeping the grass a nice green color.

Hopefully, we are all enjoying a strong monsoon season. The rains are needed and the drop in temperatures is always welcome; however, these storms can also bring dangerous lightning. According to AECINFO.org, “5% of lightning strikes around the country actually happen on golf courses. Thinking that you have enough time to play a few more holes before the lightning gets too close to be dangerous is a chance you should not take.” In Tucson if you see a lightning strike, you should stop play and not resume play until a 30-minute time span of no lightning sightings has passed. The Views Golf Course does not have an alert system to tell golfers to leave the course and find shelter. It is up to the players to be smart and know that seeing lightning in the distance is time to get off the course. We like our members and encourage all of you to be safe. If you are in town and want to play some golf, now is the time to join the Men’s Nine-Hole League. We are playing through the summer, and because we are few in number, there is a great chance that you can win. It is also a good time to learn how to score on the Golf Genius app before the crowd returns in the fall. Rumor has it that there will be a new Views app that combines scoring, a GPS for distance checking and a number of other features. We plan to have three meetings and burger bashes in the coming months; the only problem is finding a place to hold those events. The Activity Center renovation and construction has caused a loss of the Auditorium while that work is going on. So come join us and don’t forget to get the Holein-One insurance. You never know.

Clubs Arts, Crafts & Hobbies Art League Pres. Caryl Thornton 520-638-7024, VP Carol Nagel 520-825-3097

The Art League consists of five art groups organized under a single charter: Open Studio Artists, Colored Pencil, Vistoso Photo, Sculpture and Clay Club. These groups work with the Association through the Art League.

Bark Carving Bob Ash 520-282-3688 SCOVCarvers@gmail.com Tue., 1-4 PM, Thu., 9 AM-Noon Artisan Center/Lapidary

Bark carving continues on Tuesday afternoons only. However, participation has been very limited, so sessions may be cancelled without notice. Thursday morning sessions are discontinued for the summer.

Clay Pres. Barb Peterson 612-710-9421 www.scovclayclub.com As the summer progresses, group work and classes will be popping up. Pictured is an informal class on garden gnomes. If you look closely you can see different personalities and expressions–on both the gnomes and the participants. Many skills were learned during this class and much fun was had by all. If any member is interested in teaching a class, please contact Tricia Olson. She will coordinate dates, times and participants. In past years, hand-building classes included: pitchers, boxes with lids, flowers on stems, mug handles, piggy banks, just to name a few. For lessons on the wheel, contact an experienced potter to schedule a lesson. Not a Clay Club member? And you have always wanted to play in the clay? You can sign up for orientation in the Clay Studio. When a class can be arranged, you will be contacted.

Colored Pencil Plus Sue Parkes 520-825-7307, Bette McGrath 815-347-4282 Fri., 9 AM-1 PM, Catalina Vista/Art Studio

Japanese Flower Arranging Donald Marier 520-825-4878 dolmar21@gmail.com Nov.-May, Second and Fourth Mon., 2-4 PM, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge

Japanese flower arranging, Ikebana, is the art of arranging flowers, branch materials, grasses and leaves. At its core is the beauty resulting from a combination of color, shapes and graceful lines. More than simple floral decoration, it is a form of sculpture with plant materials. Learn from certified instructors at your own pace, and make creative arrangements for your home.

Knit and Crochet Jane Fairchild 520-909-5069 janemail11@yahoo.com Tue., 2:30-4:30 PM, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge

If you have a knit or crochet project or would like to learn to crochet plastic bags into sleeping mats, come join us. An ongoing group project is making crocheted sleeping mats out of plastic shopping bags. We deliver these mats to the Gospel Rescue Mission for Tucson people who are experiencing homelessness. You can participate in this project by cutting the bags into strips, stringing them into plastic yarn (plarn), and/or crocheting them into mats.

Photo by Robert Watson Looking to escape the confines of the pandemic, a creative modeler might be inspired to replicate a scene reminiscent of more enjoyable times past. John Collin created this diorama called “Cabin Fever” for just that reason. The structures incorporate elements of family-owned log homes and cottages in Maine. John used only basic tools: a tweezer, finger nail files, razor blades, glue and a supply of wooden match sticks, each of which represents a finished log, 6 in. by 6 in. by 10 ft. The buildings sit on simulated cement pilings. Removable roofs permit the viewing of detailed interiors, including the wine cellar below the house. Stop in for the club’s informal summer meetings held on the second Tuesday of each month at 9 AM in our workroom in the Artisan Center, or enjoy the window displays of members’ work any time you’re passing by.

“Summertime Blues” by Wayne Widener Sculpture Pres. Laurie Lichaa 520-991-9953 Mon., 9 AM-5 PM, Catalina Vista/Art Studio The Sculpture Club meets on Mondays in the Art Studio in Catalina Vista. If you are interested in becoming a member of our club or learning more about what we do, please stop in on Monday mornings or contact Laurie Lichaa, president. If you would like to see some of our work, we have sculptures in the display case outside of the Art Studio in Catalina Vista and in the Sun City Library. Tracy Getz created the sculpture in the picture which he calls “Flamenco,” and his “Guardian” sculptures were featured in last month’s article. Tracy’s message is that the “wonderful thing about our craft is that pieces can be added to or carved after baking.” Tracy often creates a sculpture in separate pieces. An example is the hat in the flamenco sculpture, which was created separately and then attached. Baked polymer clay can also be sanded, buffed and drilled.

We are still embroidering faces, sewing bodies, stuffing them with love and filling the shelves for the next set to march out to new families. Nothing has really stopped us this year. Life is good and spirits are up. We are looking forward to joy with excitement. We are still meeting Wednesdays, August 11 and August 18, and then back to our normal schedule September 1 with a short two-week break on September 22 and 29. We put all our love in the little bears we create and children love. Sign in and come join us to complete our task. Smiles to everyone. Machine Embroidery

Representatives from Mending Souls visited the Sewing Room June 11 to meet some of the SCOV people involved in sewing masks during the height of Covid. Debra and Steve Dirks headed up the mask-making endeavor for Mending Souls in SCOV. We contributed over 20,000 masks and over 21,000 ties. Yes, you read that right. Our group serged mask ties that were given to Mending Souls to pass on to other sewists. Debra and Steve were presented an engraved tray to commemorate their efforts. Pet Beds

Jan Bohe 520-825-9725 Tue., 1-3 PM, Artisan Center/Sewing

If you have a dog or cat, you probably already have a comfy bed for them. We want to provide comfy beds for the Humane Society’s animals. We use washable recycled fabric scraps and polyester fiberfill to make all sizes of pet beds. We hope to make those cats and dogs comfortable while waiting for adoption. We need more scraps and larger fabric pieces for the pillows. Can you help? The Humane Society is always very glad to get the pet beds, but we need more fabric donations. Please bring donations Tuesdays, 1-3 PM, to the Sewing Room, or call Jan Bohe. Quilters

The Tapestry Hooking and Fiber Arts group meets Tuesday mornings in the Sewing Room throughout the year. If you are interested in being part of our group, stop into the Sewing Room on Tuesday mornings or contact Coni Arseneau or Carrie Wiley. The picture is a recent project completed by Coni Arseneau. The design was purchased from the Oriental Rug Designs as a “Try Me Kit.” The kit contained all the necessary elements to complete the project, except for the scissors. The technique to complete the project is referred to as “frameless punch needle.” The rug is punched from the back, therefore, the design is drawn/printed on the back. In traditional rug hooking the design and hooking is done from the front of the work. In both techniques, loops are made on the foundation material. In the punch needle project, the loops are clipped (illustrated in the picture) and sculptured to get the look you see in Coni’s piece.

Silversmith and Lapidary Pres. Steve Adams 520-268-8216 adams.se938@gmail.com Summer shop hours: Mon.-Fri., 9 AM-Noon when monitor available Membership meetings resume in October Classes and workshops will resume in the fall

Bob Peoples is featured as the August Artisan of the Month for our club. Bob has been an active member for many years. He not only served on several board positions over the years, but also as a monitor, trainer at orientation classes, and teacher to others during shop hours. His featured pendant creation is made with two layers sterling silver. On the top layer are hand sawed, polished shapes he soldered onto a larger bottom piece. He then used a Dremel bit to texture the lower sections of silver. The turquoise stone he cut and formed in the lapidary shop. He made a bezel around the stone and soldered that to the pendant. The back has a sliver loop that holds the chain. You can find more of Bob’s work in the display case in the Artisan Center.

Wood Carving Bob Ash 520-282-3688 SCOVCarvers@gmail.com Sat., 9-Noon, Artisan Center/Lapidary

If you are tired of the heat, how about taking a trip to Mt Lemmon SkyCenter for an evening of stargazing? The temperature is usually 30 degrees cooler than SCOV. The SkyCenter has now reopened. Check it out at https://skycenter. arizona.edu.

Wood carving continues on Saturday mornings with Lew Dahmen or Bob Ash as the monitor. However, participation has been very limited, so sessions may be cancelled without notice.

Woodworking Pres. Gary Casner 303-880-4120 gcasner1@comcast.net VP Bill Norton 480-980-5493 Treas. Charlie Tomlinson 503-333-8887 charlie.tomlinson@gmail.com www.scovwoodworkingclub.com

Woodworkers fully vaccinated for Covid-19 may now work in the shop without a mask. All woodworkers must provide their own eye protection. Gary Casner is the current SCOV Woodworking Club president and this month’s featured woodworker. Formerly from Colorado, he’s a three-year SCOV resident. Gary is in his second year of club presidency and keeps the club running smoothly. Our Wood Shop was his primary attraction to SCOV. A talented wood turner, Gary says he loves to hang out in the Wood Shop and have fun with the other club members. A new member orientation is held at the Wood Shop the first Wednesday of each month at 4 PM. Call Bill Norton for further instructions. Club dues are $20 annually. Current hours are Monday-Friday, 9 AM-4 PM. If you have questions or need more information, please visit the website or call an officer.

Hope everyone had an enjoyable July 4th and are enjoying your summer. Our club membership has increased 11% in just the last four months, which is fantastic considering the pandemic is just now subsiding and it is our Follow the leader slow season. Utilization of the small dog and large dog park is consistently increasing even with hot weather. People are adjusting their schedules to come earlier or later in the day to avoid the hottest times. Remember, please clean up after your pet whether inside the dog park, walking in the neighborhood or anywhere your dog goes. Harlow Gardens has the following recommendations for August instant color: Continue to plant summer annuals, especially for instant color and for containers. Popular varieties include angelonia, sweet potato vine, pentas, periwinkle and dusty miller. Palms: This is a great month for planting palms, which thrive in our hot climate. The most popular palm is the Mediterranean Fan Palm. Watering: Generally, monsoon rains are not a substitute for your regular summer watering schedule. Continue to water established trees and shrubs about once a week. Water slowly and deeply, allowing water to penetrate to the entire root system of your plant. We are planning some desert-focused information speakers for our monthly meetings and some great tours, too. Check out the club website for upcoming events in the fall. Dance schedule and rehearsals resume in the fall. Look at the wonderful YouTube instructions for all sorts of dance workouts and routines, including belly dancing, beginning tap, jazz and Zumba. With all good thoughts for things to head in the direction of normal activity, I'm putting together a list of gals who wish to be on a syncopated dance team for performance purposes in SCOV. "Sun City Sugar" will launch when it's safe to do so, for the purpose of augmenting the fun and frolic of the Variety Theatre Club. More information coming soon. Meantime, stay in shape and check the Dance page under Hula, Jazz and Razzmatazz. To join the dance team, email dancingextra@gmail.com and become a Sugar dancer.

Please ensure you have medical clearance to participate in vigorous physical activity prior to joining. We welcome new members.

Pilates Mary Ayers 520-638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com Mon., 3 PM, Thu., 1:30 PM, AFC/Studio

Are you a golfer? Twisting on drives, squatting and leaning over picking up balls? Golf movements are required and repeated. The results can be overused weak muscles and imbalances affecting legs, hips, arms, shoulders and back. Over 60? Your game is probably affected with shorter, less accurate drives. Stamina decreases and muscle strains, pulls and tears happen. For years, elite golfers such as Tiger Woods have turned to Pilates, an essential training tool to stay balanced and improve performance. Like golf shots, Pilates is based on movement from the body’s center or core (trunk, shoulders, abdomen, pelvis). As you strengthen your core, hip rotation improves your range of motion and back stability. Other results? Powerful, more accurate golf shots and a symmetrically muscled, flexible, strong body. Pilates is a full body exercise with very little joint strain. To attend, call Mary, or just come by and watch a class.

Tennis court after completion of restoration project

The Tennis Club is delighted with the restoration project recently completed on the Mountain Vista tennis courts. The project included repainting the walls, removing and replacing all fences, resurfacing and restriping the courts, and replacing the tennis nets. Just before this project began, the Tennis Club received a request from the POP Tennis Club to add two light blue stripes to a tennis court to allow POP tennis to be played under the lights. Following approval by our club and SCOV Administration, those two stripes were painted. Tennis and pickleball players have been able to play under the lights for years, and now POP tennis players can also. If you have questions or would like to join our club, send an email to Ron Martin.

Water volleyball is a year-round sport. Summer is a great time to come out and get your feet wet, so to speak. Singles or couples always welcome. The water is refreshing and what better way to stay active while cooling off for two hours, twice a week. Sunday and Thursday are casual play days. These are days where folks don’t take things too seriously, but still enjoy the activity. We strive to make it fun for everyone. If a more competitive type game is for you, it’s Oops! Someone missed the pool with their serve! best to come and watch a few Monday games first. Either way, it’s fun for all. You’ll hear us long before you see us as we are quite boisterous. We’re a friendly group that encourages all participants. Good serves, sets and hits are always acknowledged by both sides. That’s what makes it fun.
