Activity Center Renovation by Chris Ludwig Following approval by the community to renovate the Activity Center, these are the major steps to accomplish the renovation: • Three teams have been established and responsibilities defined. Lead Team will be responsible for directing the overall project. Inspection Team will conduct weekly inspections of progress. Finishing Team will make recommendations for interior designs. • Three architectural firms submitted proposals, Highton Company, LLC, was selected and the contract has been signed. They were involved in the conceptual design phase of the project after soliciting input from SCOV staff, clubs and users of the Activity Center. Highton has met with the Town of Oro Valley to understand their requirements and processes. • Four general contractors received a Request for Proposal (RFP) from the Lead Team with bids being submitted by May 17. By the time the June Tipster is available, the Lead Team will have completed a detailed review. A contractor will be selected in June. • Tentative timetables for SCOV teams, residents and staff are as follows: July 1 – Activity Center closes. July 1-30 – Clubs will remove their equipment, supplies and empty storage areas. End of July – Lead Team, architect and selected contractor will prepare permit applications. August 1 – Staff will remove all SCOV equipment and supplies. September – Contractor will begin non-permitted work. October – Town of Oro Valley will issue permits and renovation begins. Staff has contacted clubs who use the Activity Center to find alternative places to meet during construction. It appears

Greens Project a Success Now that we are well past completion of the golf course greens project, you may have wondered, “Was the greens project a success?” Let me help answer that question for you. One of the goals was to increase the root zone for the turf. Prior to the project, the root zone was a shallow two inches or less. Although the turf has been dormant through the winter, the root zone is now deeper than eight inches. This is a huge improvement. Another goal was to improve the permeability of the soil and be able to flush the excess salts through the soil profile. Another success, this is working so well we do not have a buildup of salts in the soil. Do we have concerns? Yes we do. The greens are nine months old and they are showing a lot of traffic wear due to the number of rounds being played, according to our golf course superintendent, Michael Kropf. These new greens are just now transitioning out of dormancy and they require a completely different regimen than the previous greens. So far over 125 tons of top dress sand has been added since sprigging (planting). Fertilizer has been added weekly and will continue for several weeks in an attempt to combat the wear in thin areas. Coyotes tore up several areas on several greens in the fall. Many of those areas are still recovering. So in answer to the question? The goals for the project have been met successfully. Now comes the development of a new greens maintenance program. To develop such a program could take a few years. Over the next few years you will see the greens mature and work toward perfection. SCOV Library - Kate Cusumano www.suncityorovalley.com/amenities-facilities/library Online catalog: https://evolveopac.infovisionsoftware.com/suncityorovalley kcusumano@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8083

Happily, things are almost back to normal in the Library. We are operating at our pre-pandemic weekday hours and open the first Saturday morning of each month. Quarantine requirements have been lifted, which means items can be returned inside, including puzzles. Perhaps the best indicator of near normality in the Library is that the Tootsie Rolls are back! One positive outcome of restrictions of the past year is that residents are much more proficient at using the online library database from home. Usage is up dramatically. While some residents already knew how to access our collection from home, many of you learned how to use the system by watching the two “How-to” videos, created by resident Garry Buck, on our website. From the videos you can learn how to sign into your account, see what’s new, place items on hold and much more. I recommend clicking on “BROWSE NEW ITEMS,” as you will see all the books, videos and audios added in the last two weeks. Or search for items new in the last 30 or 90 days. So far this year, we have added over 100 new items each month. This includes not only newly purchased items, but recently released titles that have been donated by residents. Did you know that waiting times for popular titles are always shorter here, than at the Oro Valley Public Library, as extra copies of hot titles are purchased when the waiting list gets to about nine people? Thank you for supporting the SCOV Library with donations, Friends of the Library memberships and your patronage.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 The Dangers of Outside Summertime Workouts Many prefer exercising outdoors, soaking in the sunshine and nature, but that may not be the healthiest choice during the summer months. Exercising outdoors in the heat and sun puts you at higher risk for sunburn, dehydration and heat stroke. As it starts to warm up, you need to give yourself time to acclimate to rising temperatures. While it takes a good 14 days for your body to adjust to the heat, hydration quickly becomes the biggest concern. Heat exhaustion cramps are a common side effect from dehydration when your body is unable to handle the heat and intense loss of fluids. How hot is too hot to work out outside? While there is no simple formula to answer this, it is typically wise to shorten the duration of your workout if it is hot outside. If you are unsure about your body’s tolerance to exercising in the heat, cut the workout earlier than you think you need to. It is also important to remember to drink more water than you normally would before you start to feel dehydrated. As temperatures rise, so do the risks that accompany exercising outdoors. This summer, as you lay out your workout program, remember it might be safer to skip out on the sunshine and keep your workout indoors. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2. Tuesday, June 8, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, June 9, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed

It’s that time of year again when our trees, bushes and hedges are growing quickly and probably in need of trimming. Maximum height of hedges is three feet, six inches (3’6”) in your front yard and six feet (6’) in your side or rear yard. Take a look around to see if you are obstructing your neighbors' line of sight. Is your shrubbery or hedge at the end of your driveway taller than 42 inches? It could become a sightline hazard when exiting. How about your trees that border the sidewalk? Are they trimmed up at least seven feet? Can you see the stop sign or has it been overtaken with new growth? If your home is on a corner lot that is controlled by a stop sign, the next time you go for a drive, see if any vegetation is impeding the sightline for someone turning onto a busy street. Checking out your yard and landscaping is what makes SCOV a beautiful place to live and keeps peace with neighbors. Checking out our SCOV Development Standards Landscaping Section 2.18 makes for enjoyable reading, and you may find a fact or two that you didn’t know or had forgotten. Read online www.suncityorovalley.com, choose Members > Documents > Development Standards.

Community Directory Chair Lisa Collins 812-344-4773 scov.community.directory@gmail.com www.scovaz.com/members/services/directory

Do you have a gorgeous photo of a SCOV setting that would be perfect for the cover of our Community Directory? Submit your best SCOV photo by Sunday, June 20. Log in at www.scovaz.com/members/services/miscellaneous/ and click on SCOV Photo Contest Form. Is your directory listing correct? Maybe you replaced your landline with a cell phone. Check both the online directory and the paper directory. Is your deceased partner still listed? A lot of people like to keep their loved one’s name in the directory, for safety or for sentiment, so deceased spouses are removed only when the surviving spouse requests it. If you’ve decided it’s time to update your listing, just let me know. To update your listing in the directory, the preferred method is to complete the online form “To change your directory

Remember those days when we used to sit in our lawn chairs on the grassy knoll at The Views Restaurant and listen to live music? Well, happy days are here again! The Views is once again welcoming all those music lovers who have been holed up in their homes due to Covid, back to the grassy knoll with no cover charge (exceptions may apply). There are some limitations, of course. The grassy knoll is located within the confines of The Views' liquor license and therefore, BYOB is not available to us music lovers. So, if you go, you CANNOT bring your own alcoholic beverage nor can you bring your own food. For the time being, there will be no staff service available to the grassy knoll area. However, we recommend you order food and drinks from the takeout menu, and the staff will call you when it's ready to be picked up. A donation jar will also be available to help defer the cost of the entertainment. It's so nice to finally see at least some things coming back to normal.

As we get ready for heat and monsoon season, the Gift Shop is a welcome respite, so stop by and see what’s new. Featured artists are Jan Bohe and Joan Caine. Jan makes Jan Bohe and Joan Caine canvas bags that store plastic bags from the grocery store, etc. They are totally handmade, as Jan buys the canvas by the yard, measures, cuts, appliques, paints and sews them. Sometimes, she makes them to specific design orders. She also makes aprons for adults and children as well as other sewing items. Joan moved from Seattle to SCOV four years ago and discovered her passion for glass. She started in stained glass, then migrated to fused glass projects. Some of her pieces may have the same basic theme, such as her Ugly Christmas Sweaters, but most of her work is one-of-a-kind. All of her fused glass is food-safe, but the majority of her work is for decorative display.

Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 Summertime – Time to Remember • Trees must be trimmed up at least seven feet above the sidewalk and back to no more than three feet out over the street. • Cactus and/or bushes should not extend over the sidewalk where they may be a danger to walkers. • Exposed soil on your property needs to be covered by rock. • Weeds in cracks of driveways, sidewalks and where the cement meets the asphalt of the street are the responsibility of the homeowner to remove. • Artifacts, including empty pots, are not allowed in front yards. Pots should be planted with live plants, as artificial ones are not allowed. • For safety reasons, trim any vegetation that blocks address numbers on your home and stop signs at corners. • Shrubs near the entrance to your driveway need to be cut down to a height of less than 42 inches so as not to block visibility of a vehicle exiting the driveway. Thank you for remembering the above reminders from Neighborhood Pride. Have a wonderful summer.

Posse Chair Linda Simōn 520-789-7169 posse@5LP.com First Tue., 3 PM, Desert Oasis (no meetings until further notice) www.scovaz.com/committees/posse/ (must be logged in first)

I recently met with Police Chief Kara Riley. We discussed the SCOV Posse, community policing and the Town of Oro Valley's new Unsung Heroes series on YouTube. Chief Riley indicated that our Posse acts as additional eyes and ears for the police. Criminals are aware of areas that work closely with police and tend to go elsewhere. Police can then concentrate their efforts on areas with a higher criminal activity. Business owners and organizations like our Posse are part of the community policing efforts of Oro Valley Police Department (OVPD). Officer Alex Carillo was the first officer showcased in the Unsung Heroes series. He's been an OVPD officer for two years and has already saved two lives. One was a one-yearold girl he revived after she fell in a pool, and the second was a 42-year-old father of three who had a cardiac arrest. Our community is lucky to have our own Unsung Heroes as well. Thank you to all.

Summer is here and residents find it advantageous to park in the shade provided by the solar panels in the parking lots at the Mountain Vista complex. When parking under the panels, you might notice the electrical boxes on some of the vertical poles that support the panels. Those boxes contain the inverters that convert the DC power generated by the solar panels into AC power that is used in Association buildings, thereby saving the HOA money and reducing the community’s carbon footprint. The “humming” noise at the boxes indicates the equipment is operating normally. The Properties Committee works on a variety of tasks like this during the year; we are currently meeting via Zoom. Please see the calendar on the SCOV website for scheduled meeting dates and times.

ON THE COVER "Money Shot on Hole 7"

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063

The summer months are a very slow time for many of the activities around the community. Most of the seasonal residents have left for cooler climates, and the golf clubs scale back their events. However, summer starts the busy season for golf course maintenance. During the winter months there aren’t many opportunities to aerify greens, dethatch fairways or do major projects without interrupting tournaments or impacting play during the peak golfing season. The heat of the summer isn’t fun for golfing, but the Bermuda grass loves the high heat. The heat provides the best time to aerify greens, tees and fairways because they are able to recover quickly without disturbing as many rounds of golf. Aerification is necessary to provide oxygen, water, and nutrients to the roots, remove thatch and relieve compaction developed over a season of heavy golf. This process provides a healthier and more playable turf in the long run. This summer there isn’t a major renovation planned on the golf course. The priority will be to further establish the new greens, repair thin areas of turf, install drainage in chronically wet spots and clear trees around tee boxes. On top of these projects this summer, the aerification and topdressing are going to be repeated on greens, tees and fairways. The goal is to catch up on maintenance that has been neglected in previous years due to all the renovation and construction projects. Doing this maintenance will greatly improve the overall health of the golf course going into next overseed.

Coming Events Convenient community restaurant, lounge and terrace offering an enjoyable experience in food, drinks and entertainment.

Food & Beverage Director - Aalt Brouwer abrouwer@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8074

We are happy to slowly get back to normal at The Views Restaurant. I would like to take this opportunity clarify a few recent questions. Why can we not bring our own drinks onto the grassy area outside the terrace? According to Arizona Liquor Law A.R.S. 4-244(40), it is unlawful “For a retailer to knowingly allow a customer to bring spirituous liquor onto the licensed premises.” Our liquor license covers the restaurant, including the grassy area, golf course and part of the Activity Center. Violations for not abiding by this would result in black marks on our liquor license and possible revocation of the license, making it impossible for us to sell alcohol in the community. Can we sit on the grassy area and listen to the live entertainment? Yes, you just cannot bring outside food or beverages. Please phone in an order from your lawn chair and the hostess will call you when it is ready. Do not congregate at the entrance to the lounge, as the serving staff needs to be able to pick up the drinks for their tables there. Masks are now optional for vaccinated persons.

The Foundation recently made a grant to the SCOV Library to purchase new large print books. With the pandemic causing cancellation of the Home Tour and decreased membership in the Friends of the Library, the decline limited the regular purchase of books. Readership of large print Kate Cusumano, Librarian books increased significantly during the pandemic, so the grant was most timely. This was the fourth grant made to the Library in the Foundation's history. Thank you.

Please look into signing up for the August 19 ILR Sampler that will feature Seniors for Kids (SFK). It is new this summer to help us educate the community about SCOV happenings. SFK will continue to meet in the Sewing Room weekly and create the many needed items that will be distributed at Christmas. The woodworkers will be working on their creations also. We are hoping for puzzles and new items along with the trucks, trains, cars, boxes and cradles. Seniors for Kids could use yarn and cloth donations (if you are clearing out your stashes) for the work we do. Also, we need hands and minds to help us create. Looking forward to seeing your smiles again.

The Sewing Room has been busy and in full operation for most of this year. We have new members joining the various sewing clubs and new projects being done. Not all of the sewing clubs actually do sewing. If you’d like to hang out with other wonderful people, look at the various club articles under the Thimblelenas umbrella. You can join any of our clubs and not sew. The Tapestry Club changed its name this year to show they are more inclusive of other fiber arts, not just tapestry. We have display windows outside the Sewing Room that are changed monthly. Take a look to see what the clubs have been up to. To join or learn more about our clubs, stop in the Sewing Room during any listed club time when a monitor is available. See you there. Casa Amigas

Things are beginning to slow down in the Sewing Room with many members traveling to their other homes or just going on vacations. However, there are a few of us who will still be here to carry on. We will continue to sew items for children at risk and plan for winter clothing projects. Safe travels everyone and stay healthy. Cheer Bears

Thanks to all of you who have been supporting our group working at home and in the Sewing Room. We are still embroidering faces, sewing bodies, stuffing them with love and filling the shelves for the next set to march out to new families. Nothing has really stopped us this year. Life is good and spirits are up. We are looking forward to joy with caution and

As illustrated in the picture on the left, the rug hook is inserted into the front of the material where the design is drawn with the wool strips being hooked underneath and the loop brought to the top of the material. The tool on the right is a punch needle. The punch needle is used by starting on the back of the material where the design is drawn. The agenda will include our club staffing for 2022 board positions, monitors and setting fall and winter operating hours. The featured artist this month is Mary Page Jones. She created these versatile mix and match earrings using lapis stone studs which hold one or all pieces together. The metals were repurposed from other jewelry. To get the texture on each layer, Mary Page slightly reticulated (fired) the silver piece, the brass layer was hit with a ball hammer, and the copper with a Mix and Match Earrings by Mary Page Jones ping hammer. Our window display also holds a wide variety of jewelry created by our members.

The club board is spending the summer researching options to make your SCOV Technology Club more relevant for new and long time residents. We recognize new folks bring a different skill set and needs. Some options include continued monthly general meetings on Zoom with short topic presentations and socially distanced on-site meetings for more member interaction. We know that some members still need hands-on assistance and want our lab available to meet that need. More club volunteers are needed to manage classes and find instruction sources. We are also asking SCOV club presidents for interest in utilizing the computer lab for Specialized Interest Group use and research projects. Any and all ideas are on the table. President Paul Sherwood wants to know your thoughts. For help this summer: call 520-329-7661 or scovtech@ gmail.com. Facebook access is also available, allowing members to consult with each other. Meantime, stay in shape and check the Dance page under Hula, Jazz and Razzmatazz. To join the dance team, email dancingextra@gmail.com and become a Sugar dancer.

Join us Wednesday, June 2, 2 PM, via Zoom for our monthly board meeting. Watch your email for the Zoom invitation. During June, Thursday and Saturday practices will continue in the Auditorium as previously scheduled, but there will be no Wednesday Transition to Intermediate practices. All practices continue to be led by our volunteers, who have rearranged their schedules to accommodate vacancies due to vacations. Sign up for all levels of practices through the club's website. Also, Friday, June 4, 6:30-8:30 PM, we host our Fun Friday gathering. Sign up on the club website. Important note: Beginning July 1, all practices will be held in AFC 1 & 2, as the Auditorium will be closed for renovation. Gym shoes, or dance shoes with suede bottoms, are required. Gym shoes need to be inspected for rocks that might get caught in the treads. No hard-soled shoes are allowed. SCOV ID card or fob is needed to get into the AFC. Welcome back to all members who are returning to the dance floor. Enjoy.

Rock ‘N Roll Pres. Renee Steinmetz scovrandrclub@gmail.com Membership Chair Jon Russell scovrandrclub@gmail.com

There will not be a June dance as this is an off month. At this time we have decided that it will probably be too hot to hold our July dance outdoors. We are looking into the possibility of holding it indoors at an offsite location if one can be found. Watch for an email in early July. If we don't hold a July dance, we wish everyone a safe summer, and we will see you in September. Just a reminder, our website is up and running. If you have not yet done so, you need to log in (using the password emailed to you) so that we can make sure everything is working properly. Membership renewal will begin in June on the website.

Have Covid restrictions decreased your movement and mobility? Our club is back in the swing of things. We perform 55-minute gentle water exercises based on those designed by the Arthritis Foundation to help with balance and range of motion, which are great for those of us with arthritis, fibromyalgia, replaced joints, etc. Each exercise can be modified for personal limitations. You may wear your hat, sunglasses and shirt for protection from the sun. Water shoes may also be brought in. Come give it a try. Please note: The outside air temperature must be 77 degrees or higher for the class to be held.

Bring exercise equipment for the day and a bottle of water in a small bag please. Unfortunately, we can have no new members or guests at this time. Unused tickets may be used. New 12-punch cards will be for sale after each class for $30 paid by check or cash (exact amount). Note: The Activity Center renovation begins in July. Summer is here and both the Monday and Thursday classes are smaller and more personal, making it a great time to try out Pilates. First, we do stretching exercises to warm up and then the Pilates mat routine is performed with modified moves for those of us with limitations. People ask, “Can the benefits of Pilates, which come from strengthening and stretching exercises, really develop the body's core (your abdomen and back muscles), make you stronger overall, increase spine mobility and build flexibility?” The answer is a firm yes. Additional benefits include improved balance, muscle tone, stamina and a feeling of well-being. The cost is $8/class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Please join us or just stop by and watch. The western screech-owl is just one of several owls resident in SCOV. The largest and most common is the great horned owl with a wingspan of 44”, but the much smaller screech, with a wingspan of 20”, is more reclusive and is more likely to be heard than seen. Its song consists of accelerating staccato toots and its range includes the western states and hugs the Canadian Pacific coast all the way to the Alaskan border. Another owl seen here is the fairly large barn owl that, while nocturnal, has been seen here several times during the day and Western screech-owl. Jack Welch photo prowls the area at night looking for rodents. The Birding Group has now entered the summer hiatus with only informal ad hoc trips during the hot summer months, when even the birds take a break. Sun City Vistoso Tipster, Febraury 2011

After months of scheduling and having to limit the number of players it seems strange to have so many people just show up to play again. No lines, masks or distancing. All club members are more than happy to have that all behind us. Many have left for the summer, but a good number play year round. For new residents, experiencing our summers for the first time, it is a good time for you to come and give water volleyball a try. The water is refreshing and what better way to Don serving it up be active while cooling off for two hours, twice a week. Sunday and Thursday casual style play is fun for everyone. If you want to try a more competitive play you best come and watch a few Monday

Moreover, YOTO staff were able to help her not only graduate from high school, but apply for postsecondary financial aid. Today Rashel is a junior at UArizona; she hopes to someday become the CEO of YOTO!
