Association News

From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Transparency by Ronna Heinig Most of us are familiar with the question, “If a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it, does it still make a sound?” Sound consists of waves that are transmitted and received. Our ears work as our primary receiver. However, the sound waves exist even if there is no receiver, but to actually “hear” the sound of the tree falling, one would have to take a walk in the woods. You can apply this concept to the often-discussed topic of transparency. If information is made available to our community and no one listens to it, or reads it, are we truly being transparent? Webster’s dictionary defines transparency as “operating in such a way that it is easy for others to see what actions are performed.” Transparency implies openness, communication, accountability and also trust. In SCOV, over 200 of our fellow neighbors volunteer to work on 18+ various committees and task forces to make our Association work for us all. These meetings are open to all residents, and currently, many of them are seeking individuals to participate as committee chairs and members. These are your friends and neighbors who, like you, have a vested interest in having SCOV be open and transparent with regards to its operations. Since we have not been able to meet face to face, Zoom has made our SCOV Board meetings more accessible, with up to 200 in attendance. The SCOV Board meets twice each month, and the minutes of each meeting are posted on the SCOV website. Personally, I would recommend sitting in on the SCOV Board Study Sessions where most of our discussions take place. This year our SCOV Board President, Joy Huxtable, started writing a more detailed informal account of our meetings. These summaries have been appreciated by those who were unable to Zoom in or otherwise attend the meeting. The caveat is, to be truly transparent, we need our residents to receive the information that we are providing our community. To hear the sound the tree makes when it falls, we need you to walk in the woods, attend the meetings of the

There's Light at the End of the Tunnel This past year our Association has experienced times of worry and concern about what the future holds. Our residents have had to endure months without the use of some of the Association’s facilities. Many of our residents suffered months of isolation or lack of socialization. Day after day, week after week and month after month the residents of Sun City Oro Valley have had to adapt to limitations and restrictions imposed by the Board to promote a safe environment for all residents. Some were unhappy with these changes and lashed out at staff, Board members and neighbors. As we gradually emerge from the restrictions, our residents, in general, have come through a little ragged and worn, but they have always kept their dignity and concern for their fellow residents, and it's nice to see enthusiasm for a return to normal. While it may be true that our experiences help to define us, I believe it is more true that our experiences refine us. They help to make us better, more prepared, more understanding and compassionate to those around us. We find out how resilient we are, and although many have had lives full of complicated situations and trials, once again we were able to stand tall in the face of adversity. We'll soon embark on the renovation of the Activity Center and the temporary challenges to the activities that take place there. I know that we can count on you to be tolerant of the temporary inconveniences while we look forward to the fabulous transformation of the facility. You are the residents of Sun City Oro Valley, and my staff and I are proud to be part of your support team.

COVID Restriction Roll-Back Plan The COVID roll-back plan has been put into place. Restrictions will be lifted based on the vaccination levels in Pima County per Arizona Department of Health Services records. This information will be provided to SCOV in “This Week in SCOV” with the updated levels. The updates and an expanded version of the protocol roll back will also be posted on the bulletin boards and available on the website under HOT TOPICS/COVID-19. Note: Building hours stay the same until further notice. 33% is the current Pima County Vaccination Level as of April 8, 2021. As of April 1: Outdoor activities–all restrictions were lifted, except we’re still resident-only Shared food restriction lifted for community activities and events Minimum Pima County vaccination levels must be reached for the lifting of the following: 60% Capacity restrictions lifted (indoors) 60% Social distancing requirement lifted (indoors) 65% Mask requirement and hand sanitization lifted (indoors) 65% Residents-only restriction lifted (indoors and outdoors)

Program/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 Hello Spring As temperatures are starting to rise, some of our COVID protocols have changed, allowing more use of pools, meetings and some events. Saturday, May 22, will be our first outdoor movie in a year. It’s a pleasure to have this well-received event make a comeback. There will be some seating restrictions, but the night should bring enjoyment. The title and information for attendees will be announced via email and “This Week in SCOV.” Due to the large interest in the March indoor movie News of the World, we will have another viewing of this movie Tuesday, May 25, 1 PM, in the Auditorium. Online reservations will be taken for this show.

Community Services - Katy Mosier scoroval@ciramail.com 520-917-8058 Importance of Accurate Contact Information This article is an important reminder about how crucial it is to have the correct information in your resident file in the Administration office. If you have submitted an Architectural Review Committee or In-House application recently, and the information you listed on the application form is correct, that is great. Unfortunately, that information does not automatically transfer over into our software’s resident file. Therefore, you can be missing important communication or alerts if your resident profile contains old or wrong contact information. As many of you prepare to leave for the summer, it is a good time to double check with the office that your mailing address, phone number and email addresses are correct. Please take the time to call the Administration office at 520825-3711 to verify the accuracy of all your contact information. Even if you are not leaving, please double check. Thanks for your cooperation.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Hydrate For Summer It’s no secret that dehydration is a big issue. When you’re dehydrated, not only does the heat feel even more extreme, but you also run an increased risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Learn about how much water you should be drinking and then stay hydrated with cold water and other cool liquids like smoothies. Keep in mind, though, that there is a risk of over hydrating (especially for athletes in the heat) and drinking too much water can be deadly. Refuel. Just as it’s important to stay hydrated, it’s crucial to add electrolytes, which are primarily responsible for maintaining a balance of fluid in your body. Those spending a lot of time outside (like hikers) are at risk for drinking too much water, which then throws off sodium levels, so be sure to maintain a good balance with electrolytes. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2. Tuesday, May 11, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, May 12, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.

So many of us enjoy going to The Views Restauant. Sometimes it is magical watching the setting sun cast its pink glow on the Catalina Mountains or we enjoy listening to a musical performance of the evening. Mostly, we enjoy the delicious entrees–dinner, breakfast or a snack during happy hour. All of the restaurant employees are committed to providing the best in service and food quality, but sometimes unfortunate situations occur. The management wants to know if this happens. One method of informing them about issues is to fill out a comment card. You say you haven’t seen any on the table or didn’t know they were available? Simply ask your server for one. Fill it out and I guarantee that management will consider your comments and take appropriate action. Of course, we always appreciate compliments, but we can’t resolve issues we don’t know about. So, the next time you want to express your feelings, ask for a comment card and help make a difference.

Spring is here, and the temperature is climbing. On hot days one tends to stay inside. With that in mind, a good book to read can make for an enjoyable day. SCOV Library is a resourceful answer to spring tedium with books, videos, audios, puzzles and more to pass the day. Friends of the Library (FOL) members will be able to see the next presentation of “Great Views” by Garry Buck. Many residents are still coming to check out the titles from his first presentation. Garry has chosen all new films to review. This presentation will take place in the Auditorium on Friday, July 16, 1-3 PM, for FOL members only. Your continued support of the Library is very much appreciated.

The Loan Room has been busier during the past few weeks as more activities are scheduled and residents are expecting visitors. We usually have enough medical items to fill requests, but sometimes we will not have a specific toy as many of these are one of a kind. It is helpful to make a reservation to be sure you get the items you want. When using the website for the Loan Room, please remember that you are only making a request for items. It does not become a reservation until we can process that request and confirm it by checking our inventory. An email will be sent to you to confirm that your requested items are available and can be reserved. Our system is not monitored 24/7, so a minimum of one week prior to your requested date is necessary to complete the process. Also, be sure to click on the Finalize Request button on the Reservation Summary screen at the end of the process. Otherwise your request will not be complete. Thank you for your support of our can collection program and the Loan Room throughout the past year.

Long Range Planning Chair Sharon Kennedy kennesk@comcast.net Second and Fourth Wed., 10 AM, on Zoom

The purpose of our committee is to develop and recommend to the Board a rolling 5-10 year plan to maintain and further enhance the quality of life for current residents, while ensuring SCOV remains competitive in attracting additional active, involved people to our community. Committee documents, past agendas, minutes and our Request Project Consideration form are available on the SCOV website. Our meetings are open to all residents.

Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 Summer Is Coming Before we know it, summer will be here and we bid farewell to those who leave our community during the hot months ahead. Remember to have someone look after your home and yard while you are away, even if you are only gone for part of the time. A messy yard is an indication that you are gone and puts your home and belongings in what could be an unsafe situation. During our monsoon season, assuming that we get one this year, weeds grow in abundance and need to be removed as quickly as possible. With possible storms, there are times when it’s necessary to reach homeowners about roof tile damage and/or trees down. Don’t forget to leave your summer address and phone number with Administration so they can reach you. Have a great summer knowing that your community and home here will look just as nice when you return as when you left.

Posse Chair Linda Simōn 520-789-7169 posse@5LP.com First Tue., 3 PM, Desert Oasis (no meetings until further notice) www.scovaz.com/committees/posse/ (must be logged in first)

It’s that time of year when our winter residents leave. We will miss them and hope they enjoy their summer wherever they may be. I’ve been in contact with the Posse squad leaders and have confirmed there will not be enough Posse members to cover patrols this summer. Many will be out of the area, and others are still concerned about their safety. There are a few willing to begin immediately, but the number of patrol assignments far exceeds the available volunteers. As a result, we have decided to resume patrols in October. For those who will remain in our community, I appreciate your continuing to lookout for your neighbors. Stay safe and healthy.

Properties Chair Rich Oaks richoaks114@gmail.com Third Thu., 9 AM, via Zoom

The solar systems installed at various SCOV buildings continue to produce electricity, thereby reducing utility costs and helping reduce our community’s carbon footprint. The eight systems with a total capacity of 426 kilowatts are located throughout the common area parking lots and roofs. Solar provides about 60% of the electrical needs at SCOV-owned facilities. The systems were installed without cost to SCOV and provide a net savings when compared with purchasing power from Tucson Electric Power. SCOV has an opportunity to purchase the systems later this year from the current owner, which the Properties Committee supports. We are

Director of Golf - Rick Price rprice@theviewsgolfclub.com 520-917-8086

After a successful and busy season, here are some important dates moving forward on the maintenance of the golf course. The use of driving range tee-off grass is now available, and the short game area will be open for practice on May 15. On May 20, the practice green will be aerified starting at 9 AM and closed for the remainder of the day. The green aerification begins May 24 with the back nine being closed for the day, allowing for nine holes only on the front nine. On the following day, we will aerify the front and open the back nine holes. June 1 will start the closure of the back nine through June 4 for fairway aerification. June 7 through 11, the front nine will be closed for aerification. Our new rates and membership information for the 20212022 season will be available later in the month and posted on the website.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063

May is the time of the year when the golf course maintenance department really starts getting busy. The transition from winter ryegrass to summer Bermuda grass is in full effect. The ryegrass has been chemically treated and is being slowly removed from the fairways and tees as the Bermuda grass is starting to come out of dormancy. For the first time in many years, there isn’t a summer construction project planned for the golf course. In previous summers, the golf course maintenance department performed construction projects that were outside the normal activities. Last summer, the greens and surrounds were renovated, a huge project that took the entire crew away from normal maintenance activities. Many cultural, mechanical and chemical processes that are normally performed were skipped because of the high demands of the greens renovation. During summers prior to last year, we built new tee boxes, reshaped fairway and green grass traps, rebuilt

9

bunkers and moved irrigation pipes. This summer, the maintenance department can finally focus on maintaining the golf course properly. Starting in May, the fairways are going to be aerified and topdressed multiple times to improve Bermuda grass health. The new greens are going to be aerified, verticut and topdressed throughout the summer to establish an organic layer to make the greens more receptive and playable. The roughs are going to be aerified a couple times to reduce accumulation of thatch and improve health. Maintenance will be the priority this year.

During the last Golf Advisory meeting, we asked Mike Kropf about putting a container with sand by the restroom on #14. Seems those of us who are better at divot filling than divot making were running out. That wasn’t possible, but you may have noticed all the available mix on the par 3’s by each set of tees. Please help care for the course by making sure you have divot mix on your cart (and are using it) and while waiting on the tee, fill in some divots there. Mike’s team has jobs other than fixing divots, so this really helps them out. Do you have any questions or suggestions for the golf course? Feel free to contact us and we’ll make sure the right people get your message.

I want to take this time to recognize and thank my staff for working so hard under very stressful circumstances. The restaurant is recording close to pre-COVID revenues with 40% table capacity and less than half the staff we had prior to COVID beginning. As we move closer to opening at full capacity, we are focused on hiring more people to support our staff. This has proven difficult as there is a national deficit in restaurant personnel. Many food and beverage workers have moved to different professions due to COVID. Thank you all for your support and understanding.

Thank You Corner My wife and I are renting a house in Sun City for the month of March, and on Thursday, March 18, I decided to go for a walk, not taking any water, nor my phone and mask, as I did not expect to be gone long. After a while I realized that I was hopelessly lost. Swallowing my pride, I asked a couple working on their yard for some help, and they graciously offered me a map and a ride–to no avail because I could not remember the number of my address. After now more desperate wandering, I stopped a cyclist, asking for aid. Noting my dire circumstances, he concluded that giving me directions would be useless. He told me to stay put while he cycled back to his home and got his car. He navigated skillfully for a few blocks and within minutes had me successfully home! I am so grateful to this good Samaritan, but neglected to get his full name (his first name was Bob). I want to thank him publicly. Good people still exist, and many of them can be found in Sun City. A special thank you goes to the Tennis Club for their generous donation to our cause. The funds will go a long way to purchase materials needed to keep our bears marching. We are still meeting to put all our love in the little bears we create and children love. Sign in and come join us to complete our task. Machine Embroidery

The Machine Embroidery Club is not meeting this month, but that doesn’t mean our members have stopped any of their embroidery projects. These summer months are a great time to start new projects for the holidays and create items for family and friends. The Sewing Room is less busy in the summer, so why not come over to get lessons and use the Brother 6-needle machine. Contact Karin Frohlich (above) for lessons or if you need a brush-up. Pet Beds

Jan Bohe 520-825-9725 Tue., 1-3 PM, Artisan Center/Sewing

It’s spring. Time for a change. Come to Pet Beds and help us cut up fabrics to make comfy beds for the dogs and cats at the Humane Society. We use washable recycled fabric scraps and polyester fiberfill to make all sizes of pet beds. We hope to make those animals comfortable while waiting for adoption. Why not join us? Restrictions have eased and we would welcome some more helpers. For more information, please call Jan.

Seniors for Kids (SFK) will continue to meet in the Sewing Room weekly and create the many needed items that will be distributed at Christmas. The woodworkers will be working on their creations also. We are hoping for puzzles and new items along with the trucks, trains, cars, boxes and cradles. If by any chance you are clearing out cloth or yarn from your stashes, SFK could use some for the work we do. Thank you again to the entire community for all you do. Looking forward to seeing your smiles again. Tapestry Hooking and Fiber Arts

If you are interested in being part of our group, stop by the Sewing Room Tuesday morning or contact either Coni Arseneau or Carrie Wiley. Earlier this year, the group changed its name to include people interested in various other fiber arts. The picture illustrates a couple of examples of alternative fiber arts. On the top left is an illustration of Swedish or Hucks Embroidery/ Weaving by Lillian Shaw. Traditionally, pearl cotton and a tapestry needle are used. Below is an illustration of tatting by Coni Arseneau. She used a tatting shuttle and cotton crochet thread. The project on the top right is embroidery completed by Coni’s mother. Embroidery needles and floss are used in the stitching. The same materials are used in the cross-stitch project directly below which was completed by Jane Honeywell.

This month’s featured jewelry piece is created by Michael Knott. The materials he used are sterling silver, 24k gold and a turquoise nugget. The finish is hammered and textured. Michael joined our club six years ago. He started doing lapidary work in 1974, primarily working in turquoise. Michael traded stones for jewelry equipment and started making jewelry, then selling his wares in various art fairs. He became a full-time, self-employed jeweler in 1984 and is still at it. His work is in a gallery in Minnesota, and he continues to create pieces like this. Michael is our lapidary specialist and teaches classes for members. Introductory silversmith and refresher classes will start in the fall. The shop is currently open for members most mornings with summer hours starting in June. parties can look forward to those resuming also. Astronomy is one of the fastest evolving of the sciences. The discovery of new exo-planets is nearly a weekly occurrance. Exo-planets orbiting distant stars often have the potential to be earth-like, and that is causing great excitement among astronomers. Also of extraordinary interest is the success of the latest rover on Mars, Perseverance. Its onboard helicopter, Ingenuity, will have made its first attempts at flight by the time you read this, marking the first time in history a vehicle will fly on another planet. Have a safe summer. We aren’t crazy about Zoom, although it was nice that we could include a Canadian member and others who weren’t in SCOV. We are now paused for summer. Poets around the globe have been asked to submit their feelings about getting the vaccine. Here’s Sharyn Rafieyan’s response: “Dear vaccine, I’m feeling grateful—no mean feat is now complete, at least for me, but I’m no herd, must go out and spread the word. Did feel soreness from the first, just that night-could’ve been worse, no reaction from the booster, I’m no chicken—call me Rooster. Two weeks later marked the date—time to really celebrate, thrilled at last to not be cooking, glad to call and make the booking. Sweet vaccine, it’s your protection that has fostered reconnection. Seeing faces, hearing voices without touch was not enough: bridge much better face to face, special friends in one small space, chins no longer hidden as we smile with more than eyes. Waiting to engage in hugs, our heartstrings feel the tugs—caution still in order for, we hope, not too

Cultural & Social Democratic Club Richard Kopp 520-342-6633 richardkopp@mac.com Second Sat., 1 PM, Zoom

After the decennial census, so much depends for us in Legislative District 11–and the rest of the state–on how the legislative and congressional redistricting is done. Arizonans can be proud that our state has an Independent Redistricting Arizona Legislative District 11 Commission. Thanks to the citizens who voted to amend the AZ Constitution in 2000, we’re one of only 16 states to use commissions, rather than let state legislators draw the boundaries to suit their own interests. Gerrymandering is out. Redistricting will not be easy. The issues are complex and the politics contentious. To help us appreciate the criteria and procedures of the commission, our guest speaker is Dee Maitland. She is a knowledgeable member of both the League of Women Voters and the Democrats of Oro Valley. The club will take a pause for the summer months and not hold general meetings during June, July and August.

For information on how to gain entry to the dog parks and join the club, contact one of the membership chairs. This month’s featured dog is Nellie, Joanne Larman’s threeyear-old, twenty-four-pound labradoodle. She loves to watch TV. The two of them settle in at night, and Nellie nestles in with Bebe, her stuffed animal, wrapping her legs around it with the head in her mouth while waiting for a dog to appear on the screen. When a dog appears (no cats!) she flies off the sofa, planting two paws on the TV and barks for their attention. Nellie Otherwise, Nellie never leaves Joanne’s side, always watching what she’s up to, ready for action, with her mountain of squeaky toys. Nellie has kept Joanne entertained and feeling loved–the perfect pandemic partner. Make sure to stop by the new and improved dog park. The small dog expansion began construction March 30 and should be completed soon. Watch for our open house party. There are so many things to celebrate.

A band can be purchased from Marcia for $5. We assign an experienced member to a newcomer to help with learning the various movements. You will get a good workout in a fun class.

Pilates Mary Ayers 520-638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com Mon., 3 PM, Thu., 1:30 PM, AFC/Studio

To get the full benefits of Pilates a person should understand the basic principles. This may take a little time and patience as the exercises may be different from others you are familiar with, but they are fun, interesting and challenging. Pilates can even become addictive. It teaches proper balance, breathing and how to focus on your core (your abdomen and back muscles) when exercising. Constant movement from one exercise to another results in developing more strength and stamina. Even posture is improved. The spine lengthens and joint flexibility and mobility increase. SCOV has two experienced instructors who teach mat Pilates classes and, if necessary, can modify many of the moves for us. The cost is $8/class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Please stop by and watch a class. Questions, call Mary.

There are an estimated 33 million leisure Scrabble players in the U.S. and Canada alone. Our club has managed to survive this past year and with some luck, on April 16 will have started back in full force. With several of our regular players returning, the club will celebrate the small successes which have allowed the club to survive this past year. Pickleball Pres. Tony Masterjohn tmasterjohn15@gmail.com VP Training Doug Brown wizisland@comcast.net Sun.-Sat., 8 AM-9 PM www.scovpb.org

On March 29, three members of the SCOV Pickleball Club, Dave Burnham, Bob Lopez and Bob Regoli, played in the Oro Valley Rocks Pickleball Tournament. This tournament was held at the Oro Valley Community Center. The format was round robin in which all eight teams played each other. At the end of this session, wins, losses and points for and against were compiled. The top four teams competed for the medals. The team of Burnham/ Lopez ended up playing Bob Regoli/Chip Tanner for the gold medal. After a hard fought match, the Burnham/Lopez team took the gold medal and Regoli/Tanner took the silver medal. The amazing statistic coming from this tournament was that three of the four competitors in the gold medal match were from the SCOV Pickleball Club. This is a testament of the quality of play at SCOV. Congratulations again to our three great players for their accomplishment.

Hiking Pres. Georgene Porter gvporter@live.com Scheduled hikes are posted on the website www.scovhiking.org

Our hiking club led 158 hikes during our busiest months of January, February and March. We celebrated during our Annual Meeting/Wine & Cheese Party in the Activity Center parking lot on March 27 by picking up our pre-ordered hiking club logo shirts, donating to the Gospel Rescue Mission, viewing the animals and listening to Jerry Schudda of the Catalina Nature Program, while eating, drinking and generally being merry. We also elected our new officers: Pres., Georgene Porter; VP, Jake O’Neill; Chief Guide, Laurie Payne; Treas., Adine Knawa and Sec., Mary Laucks. We continue to hike during the summer months, but due to the hot temperatures we leave earlier, carry more water and electrolyte snacks, and wear more sunscreen. We encourage you to do the same and join us on the trails.

Brian can reach anything!

What to our wondering eyes should appear–the OK to play full partition this year! What great news for our WVB members who have stayed the course although limited in numbers for these many months. Hopefully, we'll have no more ever-changing schedules. All are welcome to join in, be it casual or advanced play. Casual is exactly that, but we do like to win. Advanced is much more competitive in nature, not for the faint of heart. All good times nonetheless. Head towards the boisterous sounds and laughter at the Desert Oasis pool any
