Association News

From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board of Directors jhuxtablescov@gmail.com

Votes to elect new Board members are now being cast. It is a good time to remember that those running for the Board are not just residents of our community. They are our friends and neighbors. They volunteered to serve on the Board because they love their community and want to give back and help maintain its high quality, as well as work to meet the needs of future generations. Hopefully, next year’s Board will have it easier as more people get vaccinated and life slowly returns to normal, or as Barbra would sing: “The Way We Were.”

General Manager - Mark Wade mwade@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8080

Memories of the Way We Were by Joy Huxtable As I look back on the past year, Barbra Streisand’s song, “The Way We Were,” keeps playing in my head. Some of the lyrics: “Smiles we gave to one another”…“Can it be that it was all so simple then?”....“Remember the way we were”….“Memories may be beautiful, yet what’s too painful to remember, we simply choose to forget.” These words resonate as I think about what our community has gone through. In March 2020 SCOV, like much of the world, closed its facilities due to the pandemic, and as a result many longplanned activities and events had to be canceled for the health and welfare of our residents and staff. These changes to our normal routines were difficult. Many residents supported the reasons for the closures, cancellations and implementation of new safety protocols, while others disagreed. As the weeks and months passed and the increased number of COVID cases and deaths dominated the news, some residents started to chafe at the restrictions while others became more concerned for their health. The memories of what life was like before COVID when life was “more simple and people smiled more” were starting to fade. Some residents became more critical of both the Board and Management. They were also less tolerant of their neighbors. Often the Board and Management would get caught in the middle of neighbors with different beliefs, each wanting the Board/Management to put a stop to the other peoples’ behavior. What happened to our community that most of us thought of as paradise? As Barbra would sing: “It was all so simple then.” As I count down the final months of my three-year Board term, I reflect on the honor it has been to serve on the SCOV Board and this past year as Board President. I also remember the stress of serving during a pandemic and the toll it has taken on our members, staff and families. Nobody can adequately prepare you for the tough decisions you will have to make as a Board member or the criticism you will receive from some in our community. To say the past year has been a challenge would be an understatement.

What Gives the Association the Right to Tell Me What to Do? In a nutshell: the association declaration and state law. Community associations have a governmental component. Like a city or county government, a community association has a charter–called the declaration. The declaration encompasses bylaws, master declaration and other documents that give community associations their legal foundation. These governing documents obligate the association to preserve and protect the assets of the community. To enable the board to meet this obligation, association governing documents also empower the board to make rules and define the process for adopting and enforcing them within limits. Governing documents also establish parameters for the nature and type of rules the board can make. State law gives associations the authority to make rules. These are called common interest community statutes, and they apply to condominiums, cooperatives and homeowners associations. Remember, however, that the Board can’t make or enforce any rule that is contrary to the governing documents, local ordinances, state law or federal regulations. Remember also that the Board makes rules on your behalf to protect your investment, your home. The SCOV Board works diligently to fulfill its fiduciary duty using the tools of the governing documents. They spend many hours on your behalf governing and setting the course for the future of this community. If you get a chance, they could sure use a pat on the back and your encouragement. COVID Vaccine There has been much dissemination of information about vaccines over the past month. Many have braved the appointment registration websites with success. Some have experienced frustration. This endeavor to provide the vaccine to Pima County is on a magnitude that hasn’t been seen in our culture for a while. Information about the vaccine can be found in many places. SCOV has provided a webpage since the beginning of COVID to keep you updated, not only on our work within SCOV to provide a safe environment, but with information from the Town, Pima County, the State and beyond. As the situation is ever changing, it may be helpful to visit the page again to review the updated information. The information regarding the vaccine is revised when new vaccination sites are made available to SCOV residents. As you may know, some of the vaccine comes from federal sources and some comes through Arizona State Department of Health Services via Pima County. Their rules are different. At the writing of this article, the federal vaccine can be given to those 65 and older while Pima County vaccine is targeting the most vulnerable starting with ages 75, then moving down to 70 and so forth. Keep checking our home page, www.suncityorovalley.com under Hot Topics and COVID-19 for the latest information and quick links to vaccine sites.

Program/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 Is It Really a Year? Hard to believe that COVID has changed our lives for a year. We hope that all the suggestions that have been put forth, along with Zoom presentations have brought some relief from boredom. Please contact me at psarpalius@suncityorovalley. com with any suggestions that you may have to enrich the lives of all residents. New ideas are always welcome and encouraged. Stay safe.

Community Services - Katy Mosier scoroval@ciramail.com 520-917-8058 Email Housekeeping If there is an emergency such as an irrigation water leak, SCOV staff will try to reach you by telephone. However, if we are unable to reach you, we will send an email to you. Sun City has recently installed new software, and your files were transferred from the existing software. However, we have experienced many instances recently where residents’ email addresses are no longer valid. If your email has changed in the last year or so and you have not updated it with us, you could be missing out on valuable information concerning your property. We have a new email address used for ARC and In-House Submittals which you should add to your contact list so our emails do not go into your junk mail. Please include this email for SCOV in your contact list and use it for any correspondence regarding submittals: scoroval@ciramail.com. We appreciate your help in this matter.

SCOV Library - Kate Cusumano www.suncityorovalley.com/amenities-facilities/library Online catalog: https://evolveopac.infovisionsoftware.com/suncityorovalley kcusumano@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8083

I am incredibly proud of the Library volunteers working since June to keep our Library open. Their performance in February was nothing short of heroic. The circulation desk has always operated with 100 percent volunteer power, but by mid-January there were fewer volunteers willing to come in, precipitating a return to curbside-only service and closing the building. The requirement to quarantine every incoming item for 72 hours is overwhelming, and the shelves holding them are overflowing. If you’ve benefited from curbside pickup, you know Tuesday-Friday mornings (10 AM-Noon) can be hectic. For safety, volunteers now answer the circulation desk phone by using the speakerphone instead of the handset. It gets chaotic when three phone lines light up at once, requiring calls to be placed on hold and juggling back and forth between callers. You would be amazed to see what’s required of volunteers to get that book or movie out to your car. Our three-person morning team works like this: one volunteer answers the phone and calls out the patron’s name, the next volunteer retrieves the item(s) and checks it out, and the third bags the item(s) and takes it curbside to the patron with a smile and a Tipster in hand. It requires a skilled and efficient team of volunteers to make this procedure work smoothly, while also answering calls for assistance with hold items and adding new residents to the system. On Mondays, the Library lobby is open to residents for getting puzzles and magazines while following mask, handsanitizing and social distancing protocols. You can help us by learning how to use the online catalog or assisting a neighbor who can’t. A “how-to” video to get you started or provide search tips to perfect your skills is on our website. Our Library is open because volunteers stepped up and met the challenge.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Designing Your Own Cardio-Focused HIIT Workout Putting together your own high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workout can seem a bit overwhelming, so if you’re unsure on where to start, follow these simple guidelines: • Always start with a two-to-three minute warm-up. • Select your total workout time based on how many minutes you can commit to the complete workout. The optimal time to perform these workouts is 25-30 minutes. • Choose the intensity of your work segments. These work segments should last long enough for you to reach and maintain 80-95% of your heart rate maximum. • Choose your favorite cardio exercises to perform during your work segments. These can be equipment-free, such as jump squats or mountain climbers, or include cardio equipment, such as a rowing machine or jump rope. Other examples include push-ups, sprinting in place, box jumps, burpees, jumping jacks or high knees. • Determine your rest period time. Begin with 30-45 second rest periods and work your way down to 10-12 second rest increments. Remember, HIIT workouts are more exhausting than regular endurance workouts, so proper recovery time is crucial to reap the full benefits. I suggest starting out with HIIT workouts one to two times per week coupled with your other workouts throughout the week, consisting of steady state cardio and strength training exercises. It is always important to consult your doctor before starting any new exercise routine. Remember to start out slowly as you build confidence and feel more comfortable with each movement in order to prevent injury and maximize your cardio-focused HIIT workouts. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2. Tuesday, March 9, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, March 10, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Architectural Review Kris Ahlstrand 510-693-5502 ARC@suncityorovalley.com Zoom meetings Second and Fourth Tue., 2 PM

An increasingly common complaint voiced to the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) is the diminishing mountain views as neighbors’ trees and shrubs grow taller and wider. Please give thought to where you are planting trees, and if any will grow to obscure your neighbor’s coveted and precious mountain views. Consider trimming mature trees that have grown into massive view blockers. The height limit for new trees in SCOV is 25 feet at maturity. The palo verde is native to Arizona but is prohibited in SCOV. They can grow well over 30 feet high and equally wide. If a palo verde, or any prohibited plant, volunteers/appears in your yard, it must be removed. Many plants that were originally allowed in SCOV are now prohibited due to a variety of reasons including height at maturity. Know our Prohibited Plant List. See SCOV Development Standards, Landscaping Section 2.18. You can find our governing documents and community rules on the SCOV website www.suncityorovalley.com. Choose Members > Documents > Development Standards to read online. Look for knowledgeable and helpful Master Gardeners in Pima County. They can be found at www.extension. arizona.edu/master-gardener. If you have questions about what trees to plant, how to cut them back, or which trees are drought tolerant, give them a call. They can also help you avoid selecting trees with root systems that can do considerable damage to your foundation. The ARC is looking for members to join our team. If you are interested in guiding our community to preserve our lifestyle, please contact the ARC at ARC@suncityorovalley.com.

Community Directory Chair Lisa Collins 812-344-4773 scov.community.directory@gmail.com www.scovaz.com/members/services/directory

Are you a new resident or have you moved within SCOV? I use the monthly SCOV Resale Report to update the directory database. Those who have sold their homes are removed from the database, and the new owners are added as unlisted by default. This includes those who move within SCOV. Why? Many people own more than one house here. Some of these multiples are temporary while the owner buys a new house and sells the old one. Others are permanent and used as rentals. And others are bought to rehab and flip. Thus, all new owners are unlisted by default. To add or update your information, the preferred method is to complete the online form “To change your directory listing….” Otherwise, you can fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center. You can choose to have certain information unlisted in the paper phone book and/or online.

Donations and dues are the only source of funding for our wonderful Library, and with both library book sales and video checkout revenue significantly reduced due to the pandemic, these donations are much appreciated. While some of our winter and spring activities have been cancelled, we are proud to have hosted our first “Great Views” program, an hour-and-fifteen-minute video produced and narrated by SCOV resident Garry Buck on video gems in our Library film collection. A video link to this membersonly treasure was shared with FOL members on Valentine’s Day. Membership runs from January 1-December 31 each year, so your membership now will ensure you are ready for our activities this coming fall.

Gift Shop Co-Chairs Don Jovag 520-818-1078, Elaine Deeter 209-985-6663 Gift Shop 520-917-8051 Shop Hours: Mon.-Fri., 10 AM-4 PM; Sat., 10 AM-1 PM www.suncityorovalley.com/gift-shop Featured artists for this month are potters Jen Garvin and Melanie Stinson. Jen’s pottery story started when she retired to SCOV in 2017. “Once I got my hands dirty with clay Melanie Stinson and Jen Garvin that was it! Pottery feels similar to gardening, using mud and dirt to create something out of nothing. Creating garden art, totems, and bird houses is where I have the most fun.” Melanie started painting around age five and discovered clay in art school. “From the moment I sat at one of the wheels I knew I was hooked.” After college, she started a studio in her home. “After a 20-year hiatus, I retired and wanted to pursue clay again. Luckily, we found Sun City in 2018. Pottery is my passion and therapy. Sometimes things happen without really setting a plan in my head. I think that is when creativity really happens.”

The purpose of our Committee is to develop and recommend to the Board a rolling 5-to-10-year plan to maintain and further enhance the quality of life for current residents, while ensuring SCOV remains competitive in attracting additional active, involved people to our community. Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 It Always Arrives Spring always arrives, and the following are spring cleaning reminders concerning personal yards: • Trees must be trimmed up at least seven feet over sidewalks. • Plants should not extend out over sidewalks, and frostdamaged parts of shrubs and trees should be cut off and removed. • Wildflowers are allowed until after they have bloomed, at which time they need to be removed. • Cracks in driveways, sidewalks, and where the cement meets the asphalt in the street are the responsibility of homeowners to keep weed-free. • Hedges, anywhere in the yard, are not to be over six feet tall. • Make sure your house number is visible from the street and that all lights in the fixture are lit, so it may be seen at night. • Outside light bulbs are not to exceed 250 lumens per Oro Valley regulations. Thank you in advance for heeding the above and for continuing to take pride in your property.

Posse Chair Linda Simōn 520-789-7169 posse@5LP.com First Tue., 3 PM, Desert Oasis (no meetings until further notice) www.scovaz.com/committees/posse/ (must be logged in first)

It is difficult to write an article not knowing when the Posse patrols will resume. Vaccinations have begun and some of our residents have gotten theirs. A few residents do not believe in vaccines. The only decision the Posse board has to make is how do we keep our volunteers safe? Do we begin patrols once all volunteers have been vaccinated? How will we know, as medical records are confidential. Do we wait until volunteers feel safe? Do we ask only volunteers who live together to begin patrols? Do we wait until the government tells us it is okay to resume all activities? This is not easy. Who knows what is best? For now, the Posse is still not able to begin patrols, as our goal of keeping volunteers safe is too uncertain. Please continue to look out for your family, friends and neighbors. Be safe and stay healthy.

Properties Chair Rich Oaks richoaks114@gmail.com Third Thu., 9 AM, via Zoom

It’s been a year since the committee last met in person. For the past five months, we’ve met via Zoom and those meetings have been informative and productive. Better yet, the committee has continued to carry out routine tasks including Chalk Creek Wash, facilities inspections, solar system monitoring and special studies as deemed appropriate by the Board, committee or staff. We will continue to meet via Zoom. Please see the calendar on the SCOV website for scheduled meeting dates and times.

Tipster Editorial Chair Karen Koopmans 520-818-6337 skkoops@gmail.com

How do we prepare the Tipster for publication? The contributors submit articles on the SCOV website by the eighth of the month. Marsha Dean, our SCOV Communications Coordinator and editor, reviews the articles as she enters them into the Tipster format, highlighting issues for the editorial committee to consider. She chooses the color theme and cover photo. Next, she divides the copy into five parts for teams of Tipster editors to review–to ensure the articles meet Tipster Article Standards, are clear in meaning and useful to the community. Submitters are consulted if significant changes are needed. After team members have consulted with their partner, Marsha uses their edited copy to make the indicated changes. Next, the second draft. The chair and a member of the committee review the entire issue for additional editing. Marsha again revises the copy, arranges the ads and photos, and it’s off to the printer. We work hard to present an attractive, easy-to-read Tipster to our SCOV community.

Golfing experience that provides professional and friendly service, mountain views and excellent conditions.

Director of Golf - Rick Price rprice@theviewsgolfclub.com 520-917-8086

It is no secret that golf can be played while maintaining social distancing, which has helped golf to thrive during the pandemic. When the virus forced lockdowns in March 2020, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey kept golf courses open by declaring them essential businesses. As part of his executive order, clubs had to close many indoor areas and facilities, but their courses remained open for business. For the most part, courses in the state did more than stay open. Many saw their businesses thrive and even expand in some cases. Virtually all courses have reported an increase in the number of rounds played since the onset of the virus earlier last year. Golf is big business in the state. According to a 2016 study from the University of Arizona, golf contributes $3.9 billion to the state’s economy every year. And that number has increased to date. At The Views Golf Club, we were already trending in increased rounds of golf year after year. We continue that growth trajectory. For whatever reason, whether it be curiosity, passion or mere boredom, more Arizonans are playing golf in 2020-

9

2021 than many years past. Even then, the older demographic typically associated with Sun City has not stopped playing golf despite the possible increased vulnerability to the coronavirus. With mostly outdoor interactions and small playing groups, golf can adapt to even the most stringent social-distancing requirements. COVID-19 protocols make the game safer during the pandemic and are not changing the way golf is played.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063

March is the beginning of the golf course maintenance busy season. The weather begins to warm up, and the chances of rain decreases. These changes in weather conditions lead to many new challenges on the golf course, including a growth surge of grasses, Poa Annua seed production, and new construction areas starting to green up. The warmer weather causes the soil temperatures to rise which releases more nutrients from the soil to the grass. The problem is the grass begins to grow faster than it can be mowed. This leads to higher fuel and labor costs for the increased rate of mowing, and more grass clippings that need to be cleaned off the fairways. The warmer weather also starts the Poa Annua bloom on the fairways. One of the ways to slow the grass growth and control Poa Annua flowering is by spraying a growth regulator. However, the warmer weather also starts greening up the Bermuda grass that wasn’t overseeded this past winter. The new greens will slowly start to grow and green up as the soil temperatures warm up. This growth will help regulate green speeds by adjusting mowing height and frequency, as well as start producing organic matter to help make them softer. Also, the non-overseeded aprons will begin to grow which will help smooth the turf around the greens. The driving range tee will begin to grow in March as well. Golfers will be allowed off the mats as soon as the grass can begin recovering from divots.

Casa Amigas

Sigrid Flatness 425-213-6689 Mon. and Thu., 9 AM-Noon, Artisan Center/Sewing Button, button, who has some buttons? Casa Amigas is in need of buttons, but only one inch or larger, please. A couple of our members sew colorful, fabric makeup-size bags to donate to girls on the Tohono O’odham Indian Reservation in Sells, AZ. They add fun embellishments such as ribbon and large buttons. Right now we are in need of larger buttons. So if you still have a button jar, like many of us do, search for the large ones and donate to Casa Amigas. Please bring to the Sewing Room. Thank you in advance. Cheer Bears

The picture is a recently completed project by Dave Dame. He describes the three sculptures as his idea on modern Kachina heads. Dave mounted the Kachina heads, and then framed the work. Dave is highly creative; he started this project by sketching out his ideas on paper. He built the armature/structure and then applied the sculpey and added the details to the polymer. This project is an excellent example how you can make a sculpture that can be hung on the wall.

Did you know there are great benefits associated with sewing? According to a newsletter article last year in MindFood, sewing encourages mindfulness, reduces stress and anxiety, and improves eyehand coordination. Additionally, sewing helps improve the brain’s ability to grow new brain cells and also increases dopamine in the brain, which makes us feel more positive. Oh, and did I mention that sewing also helps fight dementia? By joining any of our sewing clubs listed below, you’ll also be gaining new friendships and camaraderie. So, what’s not to like about sewing? We always welcome new members. You need not be the creative type or know how to run a sewing machine. If you are interested in becoming a Thimblelenas member or learning more about any of our clubs, stop in to the Sewing Room during any listed club time when a monitor is available. See you there.

The Astronomy Club is known for its outstanding speakers. One of our past speakers has just received an award which typifies the kind of international renown enjoyed by faculty of the UArizona Astronomy Department. Professor Chris Impey just received the AAS Educational Prize by the American Astronomical Society for his educational impact both nationally and internationally over many years. The prize noted his outstanding teaching of thousands of students at UArizona and worldwide via the web, along with his countless talks and articles. Many people know that the Dalai Lama has an interest in science and astronomy in particular. A few years ago he invited Chris Impey to teach a three-week course in astronomy for his monks. They became good friends. Chris later wrote a book about his time teaching the monks called Humble Before the Void. It is a great read.

Most Arizonans can be proud of the way we hold elections in Arizona. Diligent work by county recorders and poll workers keep the vote accurate and secure, yet achieving the goal of holding free, fair and full elections remains a struggle. Ballroom - SC Starlight Jim Kasierski 520-954-4041 scstarlight.pres2020@gmail.com www.scstarlightdanceclub.wixsite.com/scstarlightdance

As we continue along with a minimum schedule, watch for news in club emails and in the SCOV weekly newsletter about dance lessons to complement our regularly scheduled Wednesday open practice sessions. The open practice sessions are held in the Auditorium and begin at 4 PM. Observe SCOV COVID guidelines for masks and distancing. Club members facilitate the sessions. If you’re cooped up and looking for a little something other than the daily walk or trip to the pool or gym, give ballroom a try. It’s great exercise. It’s great socially. Come dance with us.

Western - Kactus Kickers Pres. Bob and Sue Newman bobnsigrid@icloud.com Membership Marci Gutierrez marci.gutierrez57@gmail.com Activities in Auditorium and outside

As of early February, the 65+ group in SCOV has not been able to sign up for COVID-19 vaccine. We have canceled dances through March. At our next board meeting we will discuss holding a dance outside in late March. Meanwhile, the two-step and swing classes are going well. We are holding classes in the Auditorium with masks and social distancing. Stay safe, practice your dancing and look for Kactus Kickers on YouTube.

Exercise Aqua Tone Marcia Polley 520-818-9073 Irmel Wheeler 520-334-0957 (cell) irmel5596@gmail.com Tue., Thu., Sat., 9 AM, AFC/Pool

Aqua Tone is a toning water workout that incorporates a variety of rhythmic body movements performed in the water. This aquatic exercise class enhances cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance. We meet Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 9 AM in the winter, 8 AM in the summer, at the AFC pool. There is no fee to join the club or the class. The teachers are club member volunteers. Being able to do a basic swim stroke is very helpful. Items used in the class are buoys, boards, noodles, balls and a fitness band: you’ll need to bring your own. A band can be purchased from Marcia for $5. We assign an experienced member to a newcomer to help with learning the various movements. You will get a good workout in a fun class.

Arthritis Water Pres. Sherry Olivier sherryolivier55@gmail.com Sec. Joy Sawyer joymaesawyer@comcast.net Mon., Wed., Fri., 1 PM, Oct.-Mar.; 10 AM, Apr.-Sep., AFC/Pool

Our club performs gentle water exercises designed by the Arthritis Foundation to help with range of motion, which are great for those of us with arthritis, fibromyalgia, replaced joints, etc. Currently, we have a rotating schedule, which allows 19 of our members who signed up to fill the 15 pool reservations that our club is allotted for our classes. Unfortunately, we will not be accepting new members until after the COVID restrictions are lifted. The current pool restrictions have been very difficult to deal with, but we’re happy that the pool is open. Please note: The outside air temperature must be 77 degrees or higher for the class to be held. We meet at 1 PM.

The Fitness Swim Club provides a vehicle for swimmers to participate in a group swim workout. We generally go 2,400 to 3,000 yards per workout, mostly freestyle. Some do more, a few do less. Pilates Mary Ayers 520-638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com Mon., 3 PM, Thu., 1:30 PM, AFC/Studio

Understanding the principles of Pilates takes a little time and patience as some of the exercises are different from other forms of exercise, but they are fun, interesting and challenging. Pilates can actually become addictive. It teaches proper balance, breathing, focus on your core (your abdomen and back muscles) and movement control. The constant movement from one exercise to another results in developing more strength and stamina. Even posture is improved. The spine lengthens and joint flexibility and mobility increase. Two experienced instructors teach the mat Pilates classes and they will modify for individual issues, if necessary. The cost is only $8/class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Please stop by and watch a class. Call Mary.

The Tai Chi class is currently full and due to COVID-19 space restrictions, this session is limited to established students only. With the waning of COVID-19, a new class could open up in April. For further information, contact co-chair Alice Hutchison or Cynthia Chaffee.

mostly here in southern Arizona. We are an activity-oriented group, and all SCOV residents are invited to join us and learn more about the birds here in Arizona. Below is a list of upcoming bird outings. If you are interested in going on any of these field trips, be sure to contact the trip coordinator at least three days in advance for further details.
