Happy 2014

by Dick Brammell We begin the new year with much to be enthused about at Sun City Oro Valley.

Our long-awaited Aquatic & Fitness Center is complete and a state-of-the-art facility, which can benefit all of us as we work to improve our fitness.

We have had a record number of home sales in 2013, and have a corresponding record number of newcomers to welcome and enjoy.

The community is in excellent financial condition, thanks to a dedicated management team and the many residents who have made the necessary commitment to achieve this.

The Board is committed to continuing our very good financial condition while maintaining and enhancing our facilities as needs arise. In March, we will elect two of four candidates to the Board. Please listen to the candidate positions and vote.

The Café has been refreshed with décor and menu changes and a new happy hour that has been well received.

The Views Golf Course, with non-member play adding to the bottom line, is in excellent condition.

Clubs and committees are flourishing with activities and ideas.

It’s a great time to live in Sun City Oro Valley, and all of the Board joins me in wishing you a vibrant and happy 2014.

A Largely Positive Year for SCOV

When planning this article, I looked back at my January 2012 article which was about the healing that the community experienced, led by the Fitness Center Committee process and about the expansion of communications, such as the weekly SCOV (Sun City Oro Valley) report. Now that another year has passed, it has become more evident how valuable and positive this process and communications are to SCOV. As with nearly any community, SCOV has a very diverse membership. As such, there will always be healthy differences of opinions and desires for the future of the community. However, as a result of diverse residents’ willingness to work together toward a common goal, the contentiousness and divisiveness that existed a year or more ago has greatly subsided. Along with more cohesive residents, the membership has also approved a fitness center expansion and remodel project that most of you agree will prove to be of great benefit to the community now and in the future.

In regard to communication, there was considerable criticism of either poor, excessive or a lack of communication in the past. Although improvement can always be achieved, there appears to be a much greater satisfaction and appreciation for the information that is provided by the Association and the manner in which it is provided. This satisfaction level was recently verified through the membership survey in which 97% of the respondents indicated that they are moderately-to-extremely satisfied with the information disseminated by the Association.

As with every year, the Association will experience ups and downs, yet it appears evident that the ups were much more evident in 2013 than the downs. I think the experience will be the same in 2014 if resident activities continue on the uprise; facility maintenance and services are held at a high level; financial health of the Association is maintained; communication is comprehensive and transparent and it is emphasized that SCOV is not just a place to live, but it’s a community with a staff that cares and residents who care for each other.

Heroes Among Us Nominations Sought The Board of Directors is requesting residents to submit candidates for the “Heroes Among Us” award. This award is designed to honor residents who make remarkable contributions to our community. Nominations should be submitted by January 17 by filling out a hard copy of the form available in the Administration Office or by completing the form sent out via email in early January. The Board will review the nominees and select the recipient(s). The award will be presented at the Sun City Oro Valley Annual Meeting in March.

HELP NEEDED

Volunteer Today!

This Help Needed section is for the purpose of listing volunteer help wanted ads for various Association Committees .

Needed: Sound Board Operator for our Activity Center performances and speakers. Training is available to achieve full knowledge of the system’s set up and operation by our current expert, who is leaving Sun City Oro Valley. This is a fun job once you learn the Board. No technical knowledge is required. For more info, contact Al Burdi 818-3516.

Community Assistance Committee needs someone to collect and sort aluminum cans on Sundays. It is not too time-consuming or difficult to do since the cans are collected every day. Either Jack Saatkamp (825-4376) or Dave Johnson (825-6994) can explain the job and help train anyone who is interested.

Community Assistance Committee needs some help on the Telephone Reservation Squad. They usually work one or two days per month (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays) from 8-9 AM. They answer the telephone for CAC and reserve items from the Loan Room. Sue Pearsey 818-9777 heads this group and will train anyone who is interested.

It’s a new year, and a new opportunity to take charge of your health. Start with a small change. We know from many research studies that too much sitting is bad for us. Make it your New Year’s resolution to take a 30-minute walk every day. We have just the weather for it here. Nutrients aren’t always absorbed from pills. Make it your resolution to add more fruits and vegetables to your diet. Why not try “Meatless Monday,” an increasing trend around the country. We know resistance exercise with weights helps maintain our bone mass. Our beautiful new Fitness Center will be opening soon. Find out how to use the equipment and spend just 20 minutes two or three days per week, keeping your bones in good shape. Obesity rates have doubled in adults and children since the 1970’s. Make it your resolution not to gain weight this year. Focus on these simple changes for 2014 as you make a plan for optimizing the years ahead.

They also establish a process for judicious review of proposed new developments and changes within the community. Aluminum Can Donations: Put those aluminum cans to work for Sun City Oro Valley. Deposit empty, rinsed aluminum cans in the box outside the Activity Center kitchen. For safety reasons, do not deposit unrinsed cans, which can attract bees and may become a hazard. Profits fund the equipment for the Loan Room.

In November we delivered 400 pounds of aluminum cans to the recycle center. We received $236. So far, we have received a total of $790.60 year-to-date.

The beginning of the new year brings several activities outside of our community that bring many visitors to SCOV. If you have a need for extra beds, tables and chairs or children’s items, please call our reservation service on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays to sign up for your needed equipment. The Loan Room also has medical equipment for most problems that may occur. For Community Assistance Committee, the last Saturday in January brings our annual Pancake Breakfast. Tickets will remain $5 pp and will be sold the week before the breakfast. Please see Upcoming Events for specific information. The Pancake Breakfast supports the Loan Room, which is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM (at the end of the Cart Barn).

How about making a resolution to take pride and care of ourselves, our homes, and our property where we live? Most of us already do that, but just think how wonderful our community would look if we all did.

Our committee members have certainly enjoyed seeing the beautiful holiday decorations throughout the community over the past few weeks. As a friendly reminder though, seasonal decorations should be removed by January 15. We appreciate all residents who continually take pride in the appearance of their property, and we are most pleased with how beautiful our community is looking to usher in the New Year. We wish each and every one of you a happy, healthy and prosperous 2014.

Posse

This month’s featured artists are husband and wife team, Darrell and Carmelita Martin, who continue to tell stories with their respective forms of art. Darrell has developed his silverwork techniques to include overlay and inlay work, sawing intricate designs and symbols into gemstones and settings, as well as crafting his own silver chains. Carmelita uses traditional techniques of burning and carving patterns and designs into gourds, often adding inlay accents or beadwork to enhance her work. Look for their work in the shop’s center window.

If you enjoy meeting new people amidst the beauty of local art, please consider volunteering to work in the Gift Shop. We value our volunteers and always welcome new consignors.

Properties

The Properties Committee completed its semi-annual review of Association properties. The purpose of this review is to provide another set of eyes to critically assess the cleanliness, appearance and condition of Sun City Oro Valley facilities. A report is then provided to staff who are responsible for mitigating identified problems.

One issue observed was the condition of storage areas used for club activities. The Association policy covering storage states that it is to be used only for items needed on a regular basis. This would not include decorations used for an annual party, for instance. It further requires the areas are to be kept “neat, clean and orderly.” We feel stronger enforcement of this policy is warranted and we made such a recommendation to staff.

Aquatic & Fitness Center Technology

Once the Fitness Center Committee decided how the building would be designed, and the Association passed the vote, and the architect drew up the plans, there was still much to think about what activities would be held in this building and how to make that happen with regards to technology. We began talking to the Fitness Coordinator, Fitness Equipment Committee, gym users, Active Health Committee and room schedulers.

We looked at what was going on in the old fitness center that should be brought to the Aquatic & Fitness Center, what should be upgraded and what could be added. All of this evaluation took place with the overarching concept of using technology to make us healthier and fit.

One of the prominent improvements is the 20 new pieces of LifeFitness equipment which integrates individual hard work with many technological options, including personal fitness programs, (which Lonnie and others will be providing training on) with Internet and cable TV. You can plug your iPod or iPad into this device to peruse Flip Board, read your Kindle, listen to music or watch the Suns basketball game all while keeping your heart rate up and working on your quads.

The addition of classrooms into the fitness center caused us to think not only about exercise classes that involve movement,

but the ability to offer educational opportunities. The classrooms will have an AV system that can wirelessly stream from Apple products and show computer presentations as well as educational YouTube videos. We’ll find ourselves evolving into new educational possibilities as we begin to use the facilities.

The instructor’s sound system was upgraded in both the classrooms and poolside to provide better sound at those locations.

There will also be televisions in the lobby and cardio rooms that will be able to broadcast sports, but will also serve as a digital bulletin board to let you know about classes offered in the AFC and health tips.

The entire AFC, including the pool, as well as the courtyard will have WiFi capabilities, so you can sit by the pool and live stream Pandora or be in the Courtyard and FaceTime with your friends in snow-bound Minnesota (great PR by the way)!

The secure access system will be used to gain entry and track usage as well as an observation system for use by the monitor to provide an oversight on the many areas of our fitness center.

This is an exciting time in Sun City Oro Valley. We’ve worked hard to get to this point, not without struggle, but often those struggles make the end product more appreciated. I look forward to experiencing the excitement (and maybe a bit more frustration) as we work together to learn our new equipment and enjoy our newly remodeled Aquatic & Fitness Center. I really can’t wait to hear our Ambassadors comments from potential residents as they tour them through the building.

Happy New Year Why do we always seem to try and make changes in our lives each January of the new year when we can make changes at any time?

I like to tell people that our lives have endless possibilities and each day can be a new start in your life. The year 2014 brings us a new state-of-the-art AFC (Aquatic & Fitness Center). The hard work of many committees, Board of Directors, and staff makes this facility a showpiece for the Sun City Oro Valley community. I urge you to take a class or learn how to properly use all the new equipment. Visiting the AFC will help you make 2014 a healthy new year.

Secure Access Update Your membership cards are now needed to gain access into Catalina Vista and Desert Oasis. When the AFC opens, the card access system will be in place from the beginning. Please carry your card with you. If you’d like it to be punched and receive a free lanyard, please come to the Administration Office. Do not punch your cards yourselves as there are only two safe zones on the card in which it may be punched. Punching in another area may result in the card being damaged.

Key Fobs If you would like a key fob for use with the secure access system, they are available at the Welcome Center Office for $10. It’s not a substitute for your card.

The fob will provide you access to the Catalina Vista, Desert Oasis and Aquatic & Fitness Center. It will not work at the library.

Compliance will require on-going maintenance, prompt repairs and periodic repainting to correct and/or prevent any of the following conditions: fading, peeling, chipping, rusting, staining or any condition which allows stucco to be visible. Houses may have one body color and no more than two trim colors.

Unless otherwise specifically noted, all wood, metal and stucco accessories that are attached to, proximate to, or extending from, the exterior walls of any dwelling shall be painted to match the main body color or trim colors of the selected, approved paint scheme. This includes garage doors, patio and porch walls, wood or Masonite gates, screen doors, patio and front entry enclosures, arches, wood and stucco patio covers, metal shutters, gutters and downspouts.

Repainting a dwelling may be done after obtaining approval from the Community Services Coordinator, provided that the colors conform to the new SCOV (Sun City Oro Valley) approved colors.

Front doors shall be painted to match the main body of the house, the trim colors, or a wood-tone finish. Glass inserts allowed. Muted earth and plant-tone colors that minimize contrast and glare must be approved by the Archtectural Review Committee. Approval must be granted in advance of installation.

All side and rear yard perimeter fences and gates within SCOV shall be painted “Weathered Brown” prior to January 1, 2016. All other wrought iron (or similar material) lot interior or front-facing bridge fencing and gates between the house and perimeter fencing and security doors may be painted Weathered Brown or the main body or trim colors.

Friends of the Library January is the annual renewal month for membership in the Friends of the Library. These memberships provide the monies to purchase current and popular DVD’s, bestseller books, the fine selection of large-print books, as well as the necessary supplies for everyday use in the library.

The Friends of the Library will be selling memberships outside the library door from Tuesday, January 21 through Friday, January 24 during library hours. This is a bargain at $10 for individuals and $15 for a family. There will be a flyer in this month’s Tipster for more information.

The Books and Authors’ Luncheon will be held on Tuesday, March 11. The February Tipster will include all the details, including information on the authors and the dates for purchasing tickets.

Getting Rid of Excess Weight

Getting rid of excessive weight might be a New Year’s resolution for many of us; but it will be a very important one. Who doesn’t want to appear slim? For this you have to burn off the extra fats stored on your body. Many of us have previously tried to lose weight but actually failed. However, with will power, confidence and the appropriate techniques, it will be possible. The best way is to go slowly but steadily so that you can continue this throughout the year.

Association-Sponsored Fitness Classes

Purchase a fitness punch card from the Administration Office in the Welcome Center, $15/10 classes. You may use this card for all Sun City Oro Valley-sponsored fitness classes. It can also be used for your guests. There is a $2 drop-in charge if you do not have a punch card.

Time change: on Wednesdays, morning shotguns will start at 8:30 AM (unless there is a frost delay). The afternoon shotguns are now scheduled to go out at 1 PM not 1:30 PM as in previous years. This is being done so that we can possibly get the afternoon shotgun in before dark.

As everyone knows, we are now open to the public, which makes us a semi-private golf course. Please be aware that as new people play our course, they may be a little slow as it may be their first time here. Our rangers are aware of this and will help move them along. We advise everyone of our rules and we hand out playing tips to them in the golf shop. So, please be patient and courteous to these guests. We try and fill in empty times with these guests as a way to increase our revenue.

en’s clubs have events scheduled weekly, involving golfers of all levels. Talk to a club member and find out how you can participate and have some fun.

Mark January 19 on your calendar. A new two-person event is planned (all golfers invited). Watch for coming notices, invite a friend, and enjoy the afternoon.

Special thanks to the Men’s 18 Holers for club-washing buckets on the driving range and volunteering to acquire marker posts for delineating wet areas on the course. Be vigilant to keep golf carts off wet areas to avoid turf damage.

Plans are being developed on Hole #5 drainage. Markings of potential changes will be located on the course so golfers can view them. Talk to your club reps with comments or questions.

Golf Advisory Committee minutes can be accessed on the Sun City Oro Valley website. Go to “Association”, select “Committees”, under “Standing Committees” choose “Golf Advisory Committee” and “Agenda and Minutes.”

Thanks to Susanna Moran and her assistants, Leslie and Brainard Platt, for the festive Christmas Party. The food was catered by the Café and was delicious.

January 5 will be the last day to sign up for the President’s Cup. Pairings will be posted, and players will arrange dates and times for each of their matches. All matches must be completed by Monday, April 7.

The last day to sign up for our Solheim Cup is Monday, January 20. Captains and teams will be posted. The first Solheim Team match will be Tuesday, January 28.

Our annual Chile Party is February 4. More details will be provided at our January general meeting. Remember to sign up for all of our activities in our binder in the Pro Shop.

Cool months have arrived and the 18-Hole Men’s Golf Club is in full swing. Remember to check for frost delays on your play days. The President’s Cup tournament was played in November with good participation by our members.

Looking ahead, the Governor’s Cup is scheduled for January 23rd, 26th and 30th. This is a two-Man Team event, and it is not too soon to be lining up your partner. You can sign up in the Pro Shop now.

Plans are already underway for our ever popular MemberGuest Tournament, a two-Day event to take place on April 17th and 18th. We anticipate another great field for this exciting tournament.

Remember to keep amassing those qualifying points for the Views Cup. Names and points earned are posted on the bulletin board.

The Men’s Nine-Hole Golf Club plays every Thursday morning with an 8:30 AM shotgun start during the winter season.

We play different games each week created by our game chairman, Gordon Reimels. Once a month we have a Buddy Day, and you can form your own foursome. This month, Buddy Day is scheduled for January 9 followed by a monthly meeting at the Activity Center. We currently have 81 members and welcome new players. Our annual dues are $50.

We had a wonderful holiday season, starting off with a delicious Christmas Brunch Christmas Brunch featured a hilarious 12 Days of Christmas skit. on December 5. The party was topped off with Christmas poems written by Irene Camp and Sharon Heaps and a laugh-out-loud 12 Days of Christmas skit by Janet Kimble, Ruth Bonfiglio, Sharon Heaps, Carol Wyatt, and Bonnie Svarstad. Lots of toys and food were generously donated by club members to be distributed to local charities.

A reminder that this year’s Golf and Tennis For The Cure Tournament will be hosted by The Views 9-Hole Women’s Golf Club. The Ladies’ Tennis event will be Monday morning, Feb. 17th. The 18-Hole and 9-Hole golf event will have an 11:30 AM shotgun on Feb. 18th. The joint tennis/golf Awards Cocktail Party will be 4-6 PM, following the golf tournament, Activity Center/Navajo. Sign up in the binder in the Pro Shop by February 11. Price to be announced. Several additional fundraising events are planned and all proceeds benefit the UofA Foundation/Arizona Cancer Center.

Joe Pinella’s Healing Movement QiGong class will be held weekly on Fridays, 1:30-2:30 PM, Catalina Vista/Mt. Lemmon. AARP Smart Driver/SCOV

Newly designed for 2014, the Driver Safety class is renamed as “Smart Driver Course.” This classroom course for mature drivers brings new video and updated learning materials for your classroom enjoyment. Learn defensive driving techniques, new laws, how to adjust your driving habits to age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time.

Many insurance companies provide a multi-year discount for completing this course (check with your insurance provider).

AARP Smart Driver/OVPD

The AARP Driver Safety class has been updated and renamed Smart Driver. Two classes will be presented in January; one will be January 17 at the Oro Valley Police Dept.

8:30 AM to 12:30 PM. The other class will be January 23 at the SaddleBrooke Club House No.1 from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM. The AARP Smart Driver program is the nation’s first and largest refresher course for drivers age 50 and older that has helped millions of drivers remain safe on today’s roads. AARP has offered the course in the classroom for 25 years. Many insurance companies offer a discount to drivers who have completed the course. The fee is $20 or $15 for AARP members.

Trained and experienced AARP tax counselors will provide free assistance for electronically filed federal and Arizona state tax returns, by appointment only, Saturdays, February 1 through April 12, 9 AM-Noon, Welcome Center. Bring 2012 return, 2013 W-2’s, interest, dividend, broker and pension 1099s; social security 1099s; receipts and cancelled checks if itemizing deductions and any other pertinent tax information needed to prepare an accurate return. SCOV Sock Drive a Huge Success

The amazement of the staff at the Tucson Veterans Homeless Program was great to see when we delivered socks to the VA Hospital on December 20. The generosity of Sun City Oro Valley residents, Town of Oro Valley residents (inspired by a Northwest Explorer article), and the Heritage Highlands Clogging Group made our 2013 sock drive the most successful yet. The homeless men and women who were at the VA Center when we delivered the socks were very touched that we all cared about them. Thanks to all of you for participating in our project. Celebrations & Life Events National Philanthropy Day

Sun City Oro Valley resident Lillian Shaw was recently honored at the 25th annual National Philanthropy Day luncheon held at the Westin La Paloma Resort. The event, attended by more than 500, honored 45 persons in the Tucson area for their philanthropic and volunteer service.

Lillian was honored by the Arizona chapter of The Nature Conservancy for her 20 years of volunteer service in the Gift Planning Office in Tucson.

Last year our club donated about 80 bowls. Surely this year with more members we can meet or exceed that number. It doesn’t have to be fancy. It doesn’t have to be big. It just has to be a bowl that will hold at least one scoop of soup. That is something we can all make.

Most of the dances we teach are low impact and performed in a circle formation holding hands (helpful for supporting one another). Among the countries represented are: USA, Greece, Serbia, Israel, Turkey, Macedonia, Albania, Mexico, Bulgaria, Romania, England, Russia, France, Lebanon, and Denmark.

Steve’s topic will be another major component of his work, for FamilySearch.org. He will be speaking on the family tree link and hopefully erasing those trepidations you may have about joining a world tree. Steve also volunteers three days Steve Packer a week at the Mesa FHC (Family History Center).

Other courtesies which make the ILR experience rich for all: arrive promptly, when you must leave early, sit in the back and do so quietly; omit chatting with your friends; honor others’ rights to their opinions regardless of how far-out they may seem to you and don’t leave messes behind.

The trip this month is to Lake Havasu City for four nights during the Balloon Festival. Marge Allen is the wagon master and the departure date is Thursday, January 16. In February there are tentative plans for a trip to Teacapan, Mexico with Lue and Ode Satterfield. This trip is a commitment for 3 to 4 weeks. Check with Satterfields for details.

There will be a Valentine Lunch in February. Watch for details at the January meeting. Plan on another great social outing in March, and we will have our annual potluck and campout at Catalina State Park on April 14.

The next block of Tai Chi and QiGong classes begins January 9 in the Dance Studio. Classes will move to the Aquatic & Fitness Center as soon as it opens. Sessions consist of 11 classes and the first class is free.

Tai Chi improves balance, endurance, flexibility and reaction time. It also helps manage stress and prevent falls.

Clinical research by Tufts University School of Medicine has proven that those who practice Tai Chi twice weekly over 12 weeks experience decreased pain, improved sleep and mood, increased exercise capacity and better quality of life.

A Harvard Medical School Health Publication stated that Tai Chi is “medication in motion.”

Our instructors, Jose Hernandez-Rivera and Donna Drazenovich, stress the use of Tai Chi in daily life.

If you or a loved one has Parkinson’s disease you may be surprised to learn that one of your best caregivers could be your dog. Handi-Dogs, a local non-profit, has been helping people train their own dogs to be their service or in-home assistance dog for 40 years. Dogs can be trained to open/close doors and drawers, turn on light switches, retrieve objects, provide stability while walking, brace to help a person who has fallen stand up and more.

Our January 15 meeting will have Handi-Dogs educate those in attendance about their training programs and will have a service dog demonstrate some of the tasks he has been trained to do.
