From The Board of Directors Our MISSION as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community.

All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Transparency and Trust

by Bob Hefner By the time you read this article, we will have elected two new Board members to replace Dick Brammel and me who are completing our three-year terms. Our first year was somewhat disappointing in that we saw the many hours of volunteer effort developing a plan to renovate and enlarge our Fitness Center defeated in a community vote. More disappointing was the polarization that damaged the normally harmonious community we all enjoy so much. Fortunately, a second attempt by a new Fitness Center Committee not only resulted in the overwhelming approval by our residents but succeeded in reuniting our wonderful community. As a result, we now have one of the finest cardio/strength fitness centers anywhere, plus we have two new first-class exercise studios and spa. Moving nearly all of our exercise groups to this new facility has freed up rooms in our other common area buildings for other activities. We owe the Sun City Foundation a big thank you for providing the funding for the public art and furnishings for the lounge area of this new facility.

I am honored to have served our community these past three years as we have seen many improvements to our community in addition to the new Fitness Center. These have included significant physical improvements to our facilities as well as improvements in many of our operations as we completed implementing the initiatives resulting from the 2008 Long Range Plan. Our Strategic Projects Committee, is currently developing a new five- year plan for the community and the Board has approved two major capital projects that will be completed in the near future. None of this would have been possible were it not for the thousands of hours of volunteer effort provided by hundreds of our residents.

Planning for Summer Projects

How often do we say or hear, “Can you believe that it’s already April? Where has the year gone?” Well, it is April and summer is just around the corner. We usually have a few projects planned for summer; however, this year the list of necessary and/or proposed projects is extensive.

There are projects that the Board has approved and others that are projected to be completed in the Asset Reserve Fund and Operating Fund. A few Board-approved projects are the completion of the audio-visual system in the Native American rooms which entails installation of floor boxes and subsequent replacement of the carpet; storm damage mitigation by Hole 5, 10 and 11 in Chalk Creek; and construction of new pickleball and bocce ball courts.

In addition to those capital projects, there is a long list of projects that are proposed or projected for completion in the Asset Reserve Fund and/or 2014-15 Operating Fund.

Those projects are updating all rest rooms except The Café and Welcome Center, which is at least 14 rest rooms; reconstruction of the Mountain Vista parking lot; Activity Center tile replacement; Desert Oasis updating such as paint, tile, kitchen, wall decor and monitor station; replacement of Catalina Vista moveable wall; pond project to reduce solids in the irrigation system; storm retention area dredging; Desert Oasis basketball court resurface, and exterior building light replacement.

As you can see from that list, it’s critical to plan well ahead as we have been doing. Part of that planning process is to coordinate responsibilities, prioritize the projects and be realistic about the workload necessary to complete all this work, which ultimately means to postpone the projects that are the least necessary. The goal of this process is to properly complete as many projects as feasible, as frugally as possible and with least disturbance to the membership as possible. With your help and understanding, this will all be accomplished.

HEROES AMONG US AWARD Annually the Board requests residents to submit nominations as candidates for the “Heroes Among Us” award. This award is designed to honor residents who make remarkable contributions to our community. This year the Board received nominations for twenty candidates, all of whom were well qualified for this award.

The Board has selected Sharon and Fred Krohn to receive this year’s award.

The Krohns were selected as representing the very essence of what makes our community so great …. being good neighbors. To paraphrase the candidate submission: Sharon and Fred Krohn are the neighborhood watch dogs, and referral system, watching empty houses and planning social events to help foster a sense of community. In the event of serious illness or death, Sharon and Fred are there, willing and able to do whatever is needed to pull the family through the crisis.

Often candidates selected have been especially visible or active volunteers on committees and club officers. But “unsung” heroes are especially considered.

No one is more deserving than someone who clearly displays the quiet but fundamental measure of what makes SCOV a community rather than just a place to live. Fortunately, we have other residents who share many of these same qualities and, for that, we say thanks for all you do every day.

Fred and Sharon, you are our Heroes for 2013-2014.

“You are what you eat” is an old saying that we now know has much truth to it. We must also maintain our muscle mass as we age and for that we need to lift weights. If you haven’t already received some training on the new gym equipment, you may arrange an appointment with Lonnie Davis for that purpose. Specialized training on the new TRX straps and Free Motion Cable machines will be available soon. Check out our website for some ideas about exercises you might enjoy. Now is the ideal time to begin a regular walking program. In addition to eating healthy and lifting weights, we need regular sustained cardiovascular exercise to ensure both physical and mental good health. Walk with friends, make it fun. What matters is that you do it.

And speaking of doing it, if you are interested in living in a healthy active community, why not volunteer for the Active Health Committee?

Architectural Review

Each spring the ARC (architectural Review Committee) recommends to Board of Directors proposed changes to the Development Standards. Throughout the year, the committee notes language, procedural and out-dated standards that may need revising. After much consideration and deliberation, the changes are consolidated into one presentation to the Board. Proposed changes this year deal with a wide variety of items including: bird feeders, awnings, vehicle parking, window and door replacement, window frame colors, air conditioning units and landscaping. All proposals by the ARC must be approved by the Board and residents are encouraged to obtain a new copy of the Development Standards each year to remain current and informed. Copies are available at the Community Services office and are also on the SCOV website.

Our Committee is recruiting you and your ideas for keeping our community informed of upcoming, ongoing and current items of interest to residents. Any and all thoughts are fodder for conversation and action. We take a summer hiatus along with the Board so if you join now you can get a taste for things we hope to accomplish and then take a break in June, July and August.

We are currently researching the addition of WiFi in the craft complex and a collaboration between three committees to develop future surveys. We hope to develop a means to make residents aware of major projects before and as they are being brought to the Board. Wouldn’t you like to be a part of this process? We welcome your attendance at our monthly meeting or join the committee.

Community Assistance

Aluminum Can Donations: Put those aluminum cans to work for SCOV. Deposit empty, rinsed aluminum cans in the box outside the Activity Center kitchen. For safety reasons, do not deposit unrinsed cans, which can attract bees and may become a hazard. Profits fund the equipment for the Loan Room.

On March 11, we delivered 560 pounds of aluminum cans for which we received $330.40. This brings our year-todate total to $1,687.40.

The Loan Room continues to be very busy through this spring with visitors due to spring breaks and the many other Tucson activities. Please reserve the items you need prior to coming to the Loan Room to be sure we have available what you need. Our medical equipment has also been very much in demand for the last several weeks, so if you still have something you no longer need, please return it so it is available for others to use. Also, some unknown person has left us several walkers and crutches that seem to be for children. We did not order these and have nothing to show where they came from. They appeared on February 17. If you know anything about this, please contact Gay Russell or the Administration Office. Thanks to you for saving your aluminum cans to benefit the Loan Room.

Watch for a new and exciting look in the near future. Featured artists this month are Jerry Hrdy and Elaine Woods.

Elaine sculptures gourds, then uses long pine needles to sew or weave them onto the gourd. She also makes silver pendants from the prickly inside of the cleaned gourd. They look very detailed, lacy and delicate. She also creates pendants from Mata Ortiz pottery shards. Rarely are there two alike.

When Jerry moved to Sun City, one of the first things he did was join the Silver Club. After perfecting his skills, he established a silver shop in his garage and is always working on new designs to make his work fresh. Look for his silver crosses and bolo ties especially.

New consignors are welcome as well as volunteers who wish to meet the public in such a beautiful setting.

New signs are providing a clear and more consistent identity for our community. The signage project is almost complete. Signs are going up to identify rooms and name the common buildings, Activity Center, Artisan Center, AFC, Welcome Center and The CafĂŠ. Other directional and informational signs will be installed throughout the community using our standardized colors of silver, copper and bronze and a consistent typeset.

New name tags are now available. If you would like a name tag with the new logo, you may order it using the name tag order form included in the Tipster this month. Just follow the directions on the form. The form is also available on the Member’s Only section of the website.

rains, weeds are popping up everywhere. When weeds are small, they are easy to remove. Wildflowers are allowed in our community until after they bloom, at which time they need to be removed. Please trim any trees or shrubs which overhang the sidewalk or street. Remember, no artifacts of any kind are allowed in front yards, no matter how cute they may be.

Winter residents need their yards maintained during the summer months, so the home looks cared for while it’s empty. Be sure to notify Administration of your summer address in case they need to reach you while you are gone.

Please continue to take pride in your property even when you are not on site, so that it will look just as nice upon your return as when you left.

Major capital improvement projects will continue to enhance SCOV’s already high quality of life. Such projects are funded from capital contribution fees (equal to current annual Association dues) paid when a home is purchased. To help guide the decision as to which projects will provide maximum benefit to the Association, the Properties Committee has prioritized them and presented the list to the Board.

These projects typically involve significant expenditures and have high potential impact. As such, we feel the need for development of a robust selection process. This process must have considerable input from the community to insure that we select the best overall projects. This must be done with the openness and visibility from which we all benefitted during the Fitness Center project. Our committee stands ready to help develop this urgently needed process as we move beyond the recent decision to add pickleball courts.

Each year we ask the committees to submit a list of accomplishments, that is compiled into a booklet and distributed to the committees at an appreciation breakfast. The booklet is an impressive representation of the comprehensive and extensive work of our committees. If you’re interested in the accomplishments, the booklet is available on our website on the Association/Committee webpage.

We continue to recruit residents to serve on SCOV committees. Populating 20 committees is a large task, but our community responds. Here is a list of our committees: Ambassadors, Active Health, Architectural Review, Communications, Community Assistance, Community Directory, Consumer Referral, Election, Finance and Budget, Food and Beverage, Gift Shop, Golf Advisory, Government Affairs, Marketing, Neighborhood Pride, Nominating, Posse, Properties, Strategic Projects and Tipster Editorial. If you have an interest or talent in one of these areas, please consider submitting an application for the committee by going to the Association/Committee webpage and clicking on Online Committee Application.

Once the chairs have been selected for the committees, the names of everyone who submitted an application will be given to the chair. They will be contacting you.

We interact with managers of many communities, and it is rare to find any community that has as broad a committee structure as we have here at SCOV. Our people are our greatest strength, and our ability to work together toward a goal is a close second.

Programs in the Summer

Many residents of SCOV leave during the summer months. This greatly affects performance attendance. Most of the entertainment is costly, and to divide that amount with less attendance would make ticket prices between $25 to $45 pp. Recent surveys show that residents do not want to pay higher ticket prices.

Consequently, we have the great Fourth of July show from our very own Sun City Singers at no charge. There is also a bus trip to a Diamondbacks game in June. I try to bring in free lectures during the summer that are at no charge. I hope this gives you a better understanding of how entertainment is booked for our community in the summer months.

What to wear: Any sort of athletic shoe (excluding soccer cleats, golf shoes, etc.) will do – whatever you find comfortable. If playing racquetball, you can get special court shoes, but otherwise a good all-around running or crosstrainer shoe will suffice for most activities in the gym.

What not to wear: sandals, flip-flops or street shoes.

When using cardio equipment or in an area with lots of heavy objects being tossed about, you want your feet covered and at least somewhat protected. Please remind your guests about our footwear policies.

I have been noticing a lot of cigarette butts out on the course and in the parking lot areas. Please be courteous and deposit your cigarettes into your own ashtrays or the receptacles that are provided for you. We would like to keep SCOV as clean and beautiful as possible.

If you haven’t done so already, please stop by our fully stocked golf shop and check out our wide variety of merchandise. We have golf clubs (new and used), golf balls, men’s and women’s clothing, animal head covers, sunglasses, wide brimmed hats to keep the sun off of your ears, golf shoes, etc.

Annual pass holders receive 30% off and residents receive 15% off (excludes sale items, equipment and golf balls).

Since the weather is getting nicer and the days are longer, please remember that if you are a walker or a person driving your cart on the course enjoying the views, there will be golfers still out on the golf course. Please yield to the golfers and then proceed after they have hit their shot. This is not only for your safety but for the golfers to enjoy their paid round of golf. Thank you for your cooperation.

There will be no Hit & Giggle in April due to all the club events during that month. We will resume our Hit & Giggle on Sunday, May 4, however. Superintendent - Michael Kropf Last month the Tipster article on golf course maintenance talked about the early weed problems associated with the warm temperatures this year. This month’s article is also going to talk about weeds, but in a much different location. Over the past several years the greens have been allowed to transition naturally from the overseeded winter grasses back to the Bermuda grass.

This was accomplished by lower mowing heights, frequent aerification, topdressing and verticutting. This process allowed the greens to transition slowly and with much less disturbance to appearance or playability.

The problem with allowing the greens to transition naturally is that Poa Annua grass is not completely removed from the green. Poa Annua is the light green grass that grows in spots throughout the greens. Chemicals are used every fall to prevent Poa Annua encroachment, but they don’t remove the existing plants. Since the greens have not been chemically transitioned like the fairways, the Poa Annua plants are still present. After several years of this process, the greens are now covered in the weed and have become a problem with appearance and playability.

In May, the greens are going to be treated chemically to eliminate all the cool-season grasses, including the Poa Annua. The chemical is similar to the one used to transition fairways, but the rates are going to be lower and spread out over a longer period of time. The greens will be off-color and thin for about a month, but will be in great condition by July.

March was a busy month as the Men’s and Women’s Clubs annual events were underway. Due to these high levels of play, the plugging of the greens has been moved from March to May. The placement of pins on the greens is a topic of interest to many golfers. Mike is conducting a re-training session with his staff and has acquired a metal plate to help with the cutting of cups.

Quotes are being solicited for improving the fence in the chipping area.

At the last meeting Kim handed out a list of actions that can be taken by each golfer to improve the pace of play. Ask your club leaders to obtain a copy. We can all make the pace of play at The Views better. Four hours or less for 18 holes of play should be our goal.

Don Andersen and his committee have worked hard to put together what we anticipate to be the most successful Member/Guest Tournament yet. We expect a field of over 100 golfers to participate in this event which will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, April 16 and 17, with a practice round slated for Tuesday, April 15. The first of this month was the deadline to sign up you and your guest.

The Views 9-Hole Women’s Golf Club hosted the Golf and Tennis for the Cure Tournament. Thanks to all the participants who helped raise $3,742 for the UofA Cancer Center. The annual Guys and Dolls Event hosted by the 9-Hole Men’s Club was played March 13 and was a great day of fun and food. Our Invitational, Cowgirls Trail Drive, was March 21. We hosted Cowgirls from 9-Hole Clubs in the Tucson area. Thanks to Cindy Zwick and her helpers for making this a big success.

April is our club championship month. We will start off the first week of the championship with the Salad and Dessert Lunch after golf.

Remember, golf starts at 8 AM. Be sure to check in a halfhour before play.

You Should See This Film

by Paul Mercer After a thirty-five-year military career, Hal Linton and his wife Ingrid moved to SCOV twenty years ago. Earlier this year the Lintons’ were contacted by the Smithsonian Channel and Broadview TV of Cologne, Germany. The two channels were putting together the story of black veterans of our military as they recounted their experiences in Germany after World War II and then through the 1960’s.

They contacted the Lintons to film their part of the story. The finished documentary is called A Breath of Freedom and is the dramatic story of how WWII changed the structure of our military and ultimately our entire country. This happened as black members of the military experienced life in Germany without the institutional restrictions to freedom that were common in the States. That taste of freedom provided the inspiration and strength for the civil rights movement in this country.

German film crews came to interview the Lintons at home here in SCOV. After the filming, the Lintons took the crew to Mi Tierra Mexican restaurant in nearby Catalina and introduced them to their famous margaritas. They were a big hit.

For the premier of the film, the Lintons were treated to a trip to Washington DC, a stay at a five-star hotel and a chauffeured car. Their plane landed that day just before a snow storm. The premier was followed by a panel discussion at the Smithsonian; Ingrid and Hal were panel members.

Next-door neighbors Don and Abby Marier hosted a neighborhood party for the couple to mark the occasion. A young reporter from the Arizona Daily Star, Veronica Cruz, wrote their story for the newspaper. The assigned photographer was rerouted to the rodeo and caught up with Hal and Ingrid a few days later. The story ran March 1.

The Lintons’ twenty years here in SCOV have been happy ones and to be part of this documentary is a deep honor they are proud to share. You can view the film on www.smithsonianchannel.com.

Local author H. Alan Day will join us to discuss his newest memoir, The Horse Lover: A Cowboy’s Quest to Save the Wild Mustangs. Alan and his sister, Sandra Day O’Connor, co-authored the NY Times bestseller, Lazy B. You will recognize some of the same cowboys and horses in The Horse Lover, but you’ll also meet the herd of 1500 wild horses that Alan cared for and trained on his South Dakota ranch, which became our country’s first government-sponsored wild horse sanctuary. Booklist is calling it “an instant classic” and Kirkus Reviews says it is “fresh” and “a lively report.”

Diamondbacks – Bus Trip

This classroom course for mature drivers brings a new video and updated learning materials for your classroom enjoyment. Many insurance companies provide a multi-year discount for completing this course, so check with your insurance provider.

AARP Tax Assistance

There are no appointments available at the Welcome Center. Trained and experienced AARP tax counselors will provide free assistance for Federal and Arizona State tax returns at the AARP Information Center, 6700 N. Oracle Road (between Ina and Orange Grove). Stop in Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, 9 AM-3 PM. Documents required are the 2012 tax return; 2013 W-2s; interest, dividend, broker and pension 1099s; Social Security 1099s; receipts and cancelled checks if itemizing deductions.

Once again the SCOV Day Trippers have generously donated needed items and cash, which resulted in 10 boxes being mailed to Marines in Afghanistan as of February 2014. Back in 2003 when the Iraq war began we sent our first boxes and have continued this practice since then. It is gratifiying when a sincere “thank you” is received from these young men and women assuring us the boxes have been received.

Our discussion for that meeting, led by Ann Fall, will center on The Daughters of the Late Colonel by Katherine Mansfield, considered a pioneer in modern fiction writing. Her short stories use changing points of view and lively dialogue to provide insights into her characters’ emotional lives.

April 16 we are scheduled to discuss Karel Capek’s play R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots), which is known for introducing the word robot and deals with the consequences of technological innovation claimed to be both liberating and demoralizing. Optionally, the group may choose to have Esther Berlot lead a discussion of Mary McCarthy’s My Confession, an essay recounting her deliberations regarding whether or not to join the Communist Party.

At our April meeting we will discuss The Longest Travel Road: Overland in Search of America from Key West to the Artic Ocean by Phil Caputo. It is a travel/adventure book that describe the author’s four-month overland epic road trip covering 17,000 miles in four months. Caputo interviewed 80 people along the way seeking an answer to how so diverse a population could endure in a single America.

In May we will discuss Alone in Berlin by Hans Fallada, an astonishing WW11 thriller and a rediscovered masterpiece.

Fallada has written an exploration of humanity and humanism, how people think and act in extraordinary circumstances. It was also published under another earlier title, Every Man Dies Alone.

We recently completed an outstanding winter/spring session of ILR classes; many deserve our unadulterated appreciation. First are the moderators who perform the most demanding and usually the longest tasks. Members of the Curriculum Committee have a formidable job, semester after semester, filling twelve to fourteen slots with presenters and subject-matter they hope are meaningful to participants.

The Sampler Committee searches for those with expertise who are willing to make the two-hour Thursday presentations possible.

Perhaps those most worthy of thanks are those we rarely or never see, such as the person who makes sure there’s an adequate cup supply, or who helps cajole a stubborn piece of AV equipment. The ILR Board of Directors works continuously to maintain and improve the structure which supports this whole effort. Join us if you haven’t yet.

This has been a busy month for Pickleball. We had our annual meeting, bought and installed a bulletin board, bought a gate for between the courts, celebrated the approval of three new courts to be built, started a Ladders League, continued inter-club play with The Highlands of Dove Mountain and SaddleBrooke Ranch and trained most of the 47 people who signed up for lessons at the club fair. For those beginners, we adjusted our schedule to include time for them to play together. If you still want to learn to play, contact Judy Cornelius.

We now meet in the new AFC/Studio 2 and are loving it.

There’s much more room to spread out our mats for the Pilates group mat classes, conducted by our professional instructors. At each session they have us start out with warmup exercises, sometimes using the dance bar for balance and deep breathing. Any strenuous exercises are modified for those of us with limitations. We all agree that the benefits for seniors can’t be beat and include: increased core strength (abdomen and back muscles), balance, flexibility, muscle tone, stamina and well-being. He describes how the audience knew what would happen next, as if the movie were dreaming itself and they were part of it. “…Popcorn in hand, / Smoke in the air, gum on the floor-- / Those Saturday nights, we ourselves / Were the story and the stuff and the stars. / We ourselves were alive in the dance of the dream.” And just like those movie-goers got right inside the film, the poem welcomes its readers to take a similar journey. There will be a short business meeting at our regular time to discuss details and schedules for the upcoming months.

The main focus after the meeting will be on preparation for the day’s social outing.

The major event this month is the Catalina State Park campout. There will be a potluck dinner followed by cowboy music around the campfire. You may bring your RV and spend the night. There will be breakfast the next morning followed by a trip to Gilbert Ray Pima County Park for two days.

Tai Chi

A new session of Tai Chi and QiGong classes begins April 3.

Sessions consist of 11 classes. The first class is free. Because Tai Chi is a skill which builds, we are asked to commit to at least half of the session.

Tai Chi improves balance, endurance, flexibility and reaction time. It also helps manage stress and prevent falls. Our instructors, Jose Hernandez-Rivera and Donna Drazenovich, stress the use of Tai Chi in daily life.

Clinical research by Tufts University School of Medicine has proven that those who practice Tai Chi twice weekly over 12 weeks experience decreased pain, improved sleep and mood, increased exercise capacity and better quality of life. Tai Chi was called “medication in motion” by a Harvard Medical School Health Publication.

If you’d like it to be punched and receive a free lanyard, please come to the Administration Office. Do not punch your cards yourselves as there are only two safe zones on the card in which it may be punched. Punching in another area may result in the card being damaged.

Key Fobs If you would like a key fob for use with the secure access system, they are available at the Welcome Center Office for $10. It’s not a substitute for your card.

The fob will provide you access to the Catalina Vista, Desert Oasis and Aquatic & Fitness Center. It will not work at the Library.

2014 club dues are long overdue. If you haven’t paid them, please stop by the shop and drop your check in the box. The club needs this positive cash flow to pay for the supplies and tools you enjoy and have learned to expect on a consistent basis.

Paying your dues also protects your membership.

If you have taken the safety courses and are approved to work in the shop but haven’t done much woodworking, you may benefit from some practice on the machines to gain experience and confidence. Bring some different kinds of wood to the shop and practice different cuts and operations on various machines. You don’t have to make anything but sawdust and wood chips, just practice. The monitors and other experienced members will be happy to help you. Also, be sure to read the manuals.

Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection

Did you know that there is a wildlife monitoring project right in your backyard? The local non-profit, Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection, along with a core group of volunteers, monitors eleven motion activated cameras along Oracle Road to document wildlife activity between the Tortolita and Catalina Mountains. This study provides valuable data in the wake of upcoming construction of a wildlife overpass across State Route 77. The cameras have captured photos of deer, badgers, desert tortoise, and even a mountain lion. This project studies wildlife frequency, diversity, and human impacts on animals.
